I mean, at least he tried. But, dude, try harder.

“I’m sorry. I screwed up.” Those five words were pretty easy to type, and yet they seem so difficult for public figures to say when confronted with their misdeeds, large or small. Fortunately in the case of Buck-I-Guy, real name John Chubb, the offense in question is relatively small compared to what we’ve seen from others in the public eye in recent months. But, that didn’t stop the OSU “super fan” from bungling the apology anyway.

On Friday morning, Chubb posted for the first time on Facebook since the incident at the memorial for the late Hall of Fame coach Earle Bruce on Wednesday. His statement was short, “I what (sic) to Apologize To Coach Earl Bruce’s Family and Friends Former Coach’s (sic) Former Players for signing a Portrait not met (sic) for the public John Chubb”.

I what to Apologize To Coach Earl Bruce’s Family and Friends Former Coach’s Former Players for signing a Portrait not met for the public John Chubb

Posted by John Chubb on Friday, April 27, 2018

In fact, it was so short that it seemed to lack any self-reflection, admittance of fault, or even proofreading. Yes, Chubb said “I what (sic) to Apologize,” but then went on to apologize for the wrong thing. He made it sound like it was just a simple misunderstanding that the portrait— which was clearly marked for former players and coaches— wasn’t supposed to be signed by the guy wearing a cowboy hat and cape.

Following the fauxpology, Chubb has been trying to remind his friends and followers on Facebook of what a good guy he is by posting pictures of himself (in costume) at various charity events around Columbus. I mean, I guess that’s “Crisis Management 101,” just don’t be so blatantly obvious about it.

Look, I don’t wish any ill-will on Chubb, and give the guy credit for at least realizing that he needed to apologize, but perhaps some self-awareness would be good for him right now. I know that being “Buck-I-Guy” has gotten him into a lot of cool experiences for a long time, and good for him for making his own best life, but now might be a good time to chill and practice a little humility.

Maybe don’t put on the all-white costume, or paint your mustache red for a while. Football season is more than four months away, you can give it a rest until then. Although, I would humbly suggest that maybe you give it a rest then too.

It should be a busy night for Ohio State prospects, with several Buckeyes expecting to hear their names call on Night 2.

Now that Day 1 is behind us, we can get ready for a busy, Buckeye-filled night with Rounds 2 and 3 of the 2018 NFL Draft on Friday, April 27 at 7 p.m. ET. During the first round, Denzel Ward was picked No. 4 overall to the Cleveland Browns, and Billy Price was taken at No. 21 by the Cincinnati Bengals. But that leaves more than a dozen draft-eligible Ohio State players still waiting to hear their names called — including QB J.T. Barrett.

Granted, of the 18 Buckeyes that participated in the school’s pro day back in March, only 11 had also received invitations to the NFL Combine, but that still leaves at least a handful of Ohio State draft picks expected before the weekend is over. This year’s draft class could come close to the history-making 2016 class, except with a few less first-round picks.

Sam Hubbard was considered on the bubble as a late first-round draft pick throughout the draft process, but since he didn’t hear his name last night, there’s a good chance he’s the first Buckeye off the board in Round 2.

Other Buckeyes who have been mocked to the second and third rounds of the draft, include DE Jalyn Holmes, DL Tyquan Lewis, LB Jerome Baker, and OT Jamarco Jones. Baker had a great performance at the combine, but Jones finished pretty middle of the pack among his position group. Lewis wound up missing some of the event due to the flu, but ended up having a good showing at pro day to help boost his stock.

Even if some of these names don’t end up getting called on Friday night, there’s still a long day on Saturday with the final four rounds — leaving plenty of time to add more Ohio State alumni to the NFL ranks.

The Buckeyes host yet another top Lone Star State prospect.

In today’s day and age, marketing in recruiting has been steadily increasing with each and every cycle. With the graphic designers and social media dominating presence on the scene, the Ohio State Buckeyes and other top programs from around the country have their resources out creating new and effective ways to recruit the nation’s top caliber student-athletes.

When it comes down to it though, while the edits and videos are appealing, sometimes results just mean a little more. Whether you’re talking about winning championships, on and off field success, and more, Ohio State truly fits the bill in all major aspects. One area they continue to prove their worth to recruits is in the NFL Draft and last night was no different. If there’s any pitch a recruit wants to hear, it’s the ability to get them to the next and highest level. For the Buckeyes, they’re not only saying they can, but they’re proving they will. Nevertheless, the future stays bright in Columbus, Ohio.

Two is better than one

The Buckeyes are extremely ready to hear their fate considering 2019 four-star receiver prospect Garrett Wilson. The second best receiver in the 247sports composite rankings is set to decide sometime probably early next week. After taking official visits to Ohio State and Texas, his decision looms. Discussed already at length, Wilson is not a stranger to the Buckeyes as Columbus is truly his hometown—even though he played his high school ball in Austin, Texas. Whether or not he chooses to come home or stay home will make one fan base extremely excited, but regardless of their fate with Wilson, the Buckeyes aren’t done in the Lone Star state.

Much like Wilson, this weekend another four-star Texas native receiver unofficially visits Ohio State. Arriving today, Elijah Higgins of Bowie High School will make his first visit to campus. The 6-foot-3, 214-pound receiver is ranked as the No. 25 receiver in the country for the 2019 class and the 22nd best player in an always loaded Texas. While his name might be somewhat new to Buckeye recruiting followers, he does currently hold an Ohio State offer. Higgins also holds another impressive list of 34 offers after that Buckeye one. With more than enough schools to name, the two thought to be leaders for this physical pass catcher are Texas and Stanford. Clearly, being an Austin native helps the Longhorns, but with Stanford in the mix as well it proves that Higgins is stellar both on the field and in the classroom.

With this first visit, it should help to at least get a relationship up and running, but the interest is certainly there considering Elijah is visiting unofficially, meaning it’s on his own dime. If the visit does in fact go well over the weekend, it’s not out of the question to think a return trip could follow.

If Higgins names the Buckeyes to one of his five official visits, then Ohio State is a serious threat for his services. With some other solid receivers still in play, the Buckeyes can be a bit selective after they get hopefully the pledge from the aforementioned Garrett Wilson. Clearly though, two Texans are better than one.

Denzel Ward – 4th Overall

The Ohio kid is staying home! The first player coming off the draft board for the 2018 NFL Draft class for Ohio State is Denzel Ward. Ward was selected 4th overall by the Cleveland Browns, who also selected Baker Mayfield with the first overall pick. Ward is coming off being a one-year starter for the Buckeyes. A position he saw Marshon Lattimore do a year earlier when he was taken 11th overall by the New Orleans Saints. Ward now makes it three straight years where Ohio State has had a cornerback drafted in the first round. A feat that hasn’t been done since Ohio State did it in 1999-2001.

Ward is coming off a stellar year for the Buckeyes. He had 37 total tackles including 30 solo tackles. Also, he had two interceptions with 15 pass breakups. With Ward being the #1 CB in the class according to most analysts, being selected in the top 5 was still surprising. The Cleveland Browns have not selected an Ohio State player since 2009 when they took Brian Robiskie in the second round. They haven’t taken an Ohio State player in the first round since Craig Powell in the 1995 class, 30th overall. This may shock some since Ohio State has had 10 first round draft picks since the 2014 draft class.

Ward is on the smaller side at only 5’10”, but possesses has elite speed, running a 4.32 40 yard dash, and has a 39-inch vertical jump. Ward will look to use his skill set and pure athleticism to help the Browns return to the playoffs for the first time since 1994.

Billy Price – 21st Overall

The Ohio kid is staying home 2.0! Billy Price was selected 21st overall by the Cincinnati Bengals. That makes both Ohio teams selecting Ohio State players in the first round. Price was not able to participate in the NFL Combine after have a partial pectoral tear during the bench press. Price was the nation’s top center in the 2017 season and was a unanimous first-team All-American. This feat is impressive because Price was recruited out of high school when he played on the defensive line. The Buckeyes moved Price to guard in 2014, 2015, and 2016 where he started every single game before moving to play center in 2017.

Price was mister consistent for Ohio State. He took over the record for consecutive starts at 55 games passing Luke Fickell who previously held the record at 50. Price helped lead the Buckeyes to 4 straight seasons inside of the top 20 for rushing yards. Price is very quick and has great strength to help him control the defensive line.

Price’s versatility makes him a great selection for the Bengals. With experience at both guard and center, and playing both at a high level, will allow him to get a chance to start immediately for Cincinnati. Price will look to make an immediate impact and help the Bengals make the playoffs since 2015.

History in the Draft

For the first time there was 4 quarterbacks taken in the first 10 picks.

Baker Mayfield, out of Oklahoma, was taken 1st overall by the Cleveland Browns. The Browns think they finally have their franchise quarterback. Mayfield has the right attitude to take this team to the Super Bowl. He is on the smaller side, listed at 6 feet, but has the skill set to be a good quarterback. His 70% passing percentage is what will make him an NFL quarterback. Mayfield is a blue collar guy who has fought for everything he has earned in his football career, and will make the perfect fit for the Cleveland Browns.

Sam Darnold, out of USC, was taken 3rd overall by the New York Jets. The Jets have had many misses at quarterback throughout their draft history. Their most recent draft misses were Geno Smith, Tajh Boyd, Bryce Petty, and Christian Hackenberg. Darnold is looking to change their history of bad QB picks. Darnold has the best upside of any of the quarterbacks in the 2018 class, according to most analysts. His only downfall is his ability to protect the football with 22 interceptions and 21 fumbles in only 27 games. The Jets are hoping that Darnold can be the guy to lead them back to the Super Bowl.

Josh Allen, out of Wyoming, was taken 7th by the Buffalo Bills. The Bills traded up with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to grab Josh Allen at 7th Overall. Allen has elite arm strength, but has a hard time of being accurate consistently. Allen has been in the news for tweets he made in high school which were racist and homophobic. Allen owned up to them calling them a mistake because of his youth. The Bills just signed AJ McCarron to a two-year deal which may delay Allen’s start to the NFL early on this upcoming season. That could be great for him of not having the pressure to perform right away, and he can develop better accuracy.

Josh Rosen, out of UCLA, was taken 10th overall by the Arizona Cardinals. The Cardinals also traded up to get their quarterback of the future with the Oakland Raiders. Rosen is best “Pro-Style” Quarterback in the draft. He has a great arm, accuracy, and has great touch on the deep ball. He does lack mobility, which seems to be the new era of quarterback in the NFL. Rosen loves being the underdog, and being selected 10th he only had one thing to say to the rest of the league, “I’m motivated.” Rosen is hoping to prove every doubter wrong, and looks to be the last quarterback standing when his career is all said and done.

Also, for the first time ever in a draft two brothers were taken in the 1st Round. Tremaine Edmunds, out of Virginia Tech, was taken 16th overall by the Buffalo Bills. And Terrell Edmunds, also out of Virginia Tech, was taken 28th overall by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Sadly, the Bills and the Steelers do not play each other, but a little brother rivalry will probably be on its way in the near future.

WR Downfall

For the first time since 2009 a WR wasn’t drafted in the first 20 picks. Only two WR’s were drafted in the first round the first being D.J. Moore, out of Maryland, taken 24th overall to the Carolina Panthers. The second WR drafted was Calvin Ridley, out of Alabama, taken 26th overall by the Atlanta Falcons. For the Falcons that makes two elite WRs for them from Alabama in Julio Jones, and now Ridley. Jones, however, has caused stir throughout the NFL after unfollowing and deleting all his pictures of the Atlanta Falcons. It will be interesting to see where that situation goes.

Inspiring Moment in the Draft

Ryan Shazier was asked to announce the Pittsburgh Steelers draft pick. Shazier walked down the aisle holding his fiance’s hand. Shazier has shown incredible perseverance through this injury. He was smiling while walking and waving to fans throughout Jerry’s World. It was inspiring to watch a man who may never play a game he loves again have a smile on his face through everything that has happened.

SHazier.0.jpeg

It was an emotional moment when Shazier took the stage months after his devastating injury.

Following an injury last season in a Monday Night Football game against the Cincinnati Bengals that put his playing career, and even his life, in jeopardy, Ohio State legend Ryan Shazier has been an inspiration to his teammates, fans, and everyone in the football community.

The next chapter on his road to recovery happened on Thursday night as he walked out— let me repeat, Ryan Shazier walked out— to the podium to deliver the Pittsburgh Steelers’ first round selection in the 2018 NFL Draft.

With his fiancé by his side, Shazier slowly, but confidently, made his way out onto the stage after being welcomed by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, and announced that the Steelers had selected Virginia Tech safety Terrell Edmunds with the 28th pick of the first round.

Following the Bills’ selection of his brother Tremaine, the Edmundses are the first set of brothers to be taken in the first round in the history of the NFL Draft.

Congratulations to the Edmunds brothers, but these tears on my face aren’t for you. What a moment to see Shazier on stage, one step (literally) close to rehabilitation.

The Bengals got a future star in Billy Price.

Continuing one of the most unheralded aspects of Ohio State’s NFL Draft dominance under Urban Meyer, two-time All-American and 2017 Rimington Trophy winner Billy Price was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals with the 21st pick of the first round.

Price: When phone rang I was like holy shit, it's Cincinnati. This is exactly what I wanted, to stay in Ohio and bring the Ohio State brand to Cincinnati. #Bengals

— Jay Morrison (@JayMorrisonCMG) April 27, 2018

Over the last few years, there’s been a lot of talk about the glut of former Ohio State defensive backs taken in the first round, and deservedly so. However, apropos of the position, not nearly enough attention has been paid to the run of offensive lineman making the jump from Columbus to the NFL.

Price joins Reid Fragel, Corey Linsley, Jack Mewhort, Jeff Heuerman, Nick Vannett, Taylor Decker, and Pat Elflein as Urban Meyer-coached offensive linemen and tight ends (which, let’s be honest, is the same thing under Meyer) to have their names call in the NFL Draft.

One of the greatest lineman in Ohio State history, Price set the record for starts (and consecutive starts) in the Buckeye football program at 55, and won the Big Ten’s Rimington-Pace offensive lineman of the year in 2017.

Like Pat Elflein did before him, Price moved from guard to center for his senior year at OSU, and, even though he plans to play center in the NFL, his experience at guard makes him an even more valuable weapon at the next level.

However, with a first-round draft-grade all but assured, Price’s path to the league took an unexpected detour when he tore his pec during the bench press at the NFL Combine, an ironic disappointment for an athlete who never missed a game as a three-year started at Ohio State.

Despite the set-back, Price is preparing as if he will be ready for training camp in July. His surgeon, Dr. David W. Altchek, sent a letter to NFL teams on Wednesday, informing them that Price is expected to be fully recovered in time to begin workouts with his new teammates over the summer.

Teams were informed today by his doctor that #OSU OL Billy Price (partial pec tear) will be ready for training camp. Good news for the potential 1st rounder pic.twitter.com/hzMzAUiYOo

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) April 25, 2018

Now that Price knows where he is going, he can focus 100% on getting healthy, and continuing the tradition of Ohio State offensive linemen making an immediate impact in the NFL.

Congratulations to Billy on what will most certainly be an incredible career!

The 2017 Rimington Trophy winner is ready to move past his injury and make an instant impact.

With the No. 21 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, the Cincinnati Bengals picked center Billy Price out of Ohio State. The Buckeye will stay in his home state for the next chapter of his career, which isn’t entirely surprising given the Bengals interest in the center throughout the draft process.

So, why should you be excited the Bengals drafted Price? We’ve got you covered:

1.Price was the best center in college football last season

Following Pat Elflein’s historic Ohio State career, Price moved over from his three-year stint at guard to the very important center position, and the offense did not skip a beat. Urban Meyer is borderline obsessed with having an elite center and all Price did was win the Rimington Trophy during his one and only season at the position. Ohio State’s power run scheme is dictated by having a good center, and Price was the best in the nation all season.

2. He’s versatile

We just told you how great of a center Price is, but in reality, he was an excellent guard for his first three seasons. After switching from the defensive side of the ball during his freshman season, Price turned heads right away and won the starting guard spot as a redshirt freshman. He was a rock on Ohio State’s 2014 national title team that saw Ezekiel Elliott rack up 1,878 yards and 18 touchdowns on the ground during that season. Price was instrumental in the bruising ground game and dominated a talented Alabama defensive line to the tune of 281 rushing yards.

3. The consummate professional

A two-time captain, Price earned and was given the respect of his teammates and coaches. He was a two-time All-American and also tied Elflein’s school record for consecutive starts with 55. He’s a player who not only shows up everyday, but he does his job with such perfection that he will be a Day 1 starter and have a long, successful career. It’s hard to see it any other way with Price.

4. Gritty and Hardworking

Hailing from the gritty city of Youngstown, OH, it’s no coincidence that he’s one of the hardest working players in the history of the Ohio State program. He’s so meticulous about his work and puts the time into his craft, both in the film room and the weight room. He mauls his opponent with his lethal combination of his strength and pissed-off attitude.

Check out the video below in this really interesting film session, where one can tell he’s the most prepared offensive lineman around. It sounds like he could run an entire offensive film study as a stand-in head coach.

5. Winner

During the duration of Price’s school-record 55 straight starts, his team went 49-6, including a national title and a perfect 4-0 record against Michigan. Price anchored an offensive line that finished top 20 in rushing during all four seasons and produced multiple 1,000 yard rushers. Price is about as ‘can’t miss’ as possible in this class.

Any concerns about Price?

Price was about as clean of a prospect as possible, until he tore his pectoral muscle at the NFL Combine while performing the bench press. There was recent good news though, as Price’s doctor says he’ll be cleared by training camp. In fact, he sent a letter to NFL teams saying his surgically repaired left shoulder is recovering well “with no deformity” and that he should be good to go.

They don’t call him “Flash” for nothing.

With the No. 4 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns picked cornerbacker Denzel Ward out of Ohio State. One of only three Buckeyes to declare for the draft early, Ward also chose to sit out of the team’s Cotton Bowl game in an effort to avoid potential injuries and begin his draft-prep right away. Long considered the top CB in this year’s draft class, Ward stood out at the combine and in his pro day workouts.

So, why should you be excited the Browns drafted Ward? We’ve got you covered:

1. They call him “Flash” Ward

Not only did the CB run a 4.32, 40-yard dash at this year’s NFL Combine, but he finished in a three-way tie for the No. 1 run among all position groups -- over 200 players. Ward also left Indy as a top performer in the vertical and broad jumps, further boosting his athleticism claim to teams.

2. He’s great at getting a hand on the ball

During his three-year career at Ohio State, Ward collected 24 career pass breakups, with his 15 defended passes in 2017 good enough to finish No. 3 in the Big Ten, and No. 8 nationally. He may have only two collegiate interceptions to his name — both last season—, but the potential for more is definitely there with his penchant for finding his way to the ball and making a play.

3. Another Kerry Coombs-product

A lot of stuff you read about Ward is going to mention the incredible lineage of defensive backs out of Ohio State under former secondary coach Kerry Coombs. The ever-energized assistant decided to join the NFL coaching ranks this offseason — joining Buckeye Mike Vrabel with the Tennessee Titans — and Ward is his last Buckeye draft pick.

The feat is cool for Coombs, but his history of success should be exciting for fans welcoming Ward to their roster. Ward played alongside 2017 Defensive Rookie of the Year Marshon Lattimore, and behind players like Gareon Conley and Eli Apple before him. He should have no problem following in their footsteps and making a name for himself his rookie season.

4. He doesn’t hesitate to make a big hit

He’s proven time and time again that he isn’t afraid to lower his shoulder for the boom against a charging opponent, but he really went above and beyond with a crushing hit against Oklahoma’s Mark Andrews — a 6-foot-5, 254-pound tight end.

Any concerns about Ward?

Despite being atop the rankings in passes defended, there is one particularly important aspect of his game that could use some work: defending in the red zone. He doesn’t have the best track record defending jump balls in the endzone, but he showed off a 39-inch vertical jump at the combine, and hopefully will put those issues behind him.

Being a liability in a game-winning Hail Mary situation — especially in a league where Aaron Rodgers still plays QB —, will not bode well for a long NFL career. If Ward can tighten up his performance in the redzone, he should be a complete CB his rookie season.

Ward is the fifth OSU defensive back taken in the first round in the last three years.

On Thursday night, cornerback Denzel Ward became the latest in a long line of former Buckeyes to be selected in the first round of the NFL Draft when the Cleveland Browns took the All-American cornerback with the fourth overall pick.

Ward joins former OSU teammates Marshon Lattimore, Malik Hooker, Gareon Conley, and Eli Apple as Buckeye defensive backs taken in the first round over the past three drafts. When also counting Bradley Roby in 2014, six Ohio State DBs were taken in the first round after having been coached by former OSU secondary coach, Kerry Coombs.

After biding his time behind those other first-round talents, Ward had a breakout season, picking up 37 tackles, two interceptions, and 15 pass-breakups in 2017. The Macedonia, Ohio native also had 17 passes defended on the season, the fourth highest total in Ohio State history. Ward was one of three Buckeyes to forego their fourth year of eligibility to declare for the draft this year.

Ward’s 40-yard dash time of 4.32 seconds tied him for the fastest sprint of any defensive back at this spring’s NFL Combine, and his 39-inch vertical was the seventh best.

The Buckeye has been projected as the top corner in the draft from the moment that he declared by sitting out of the Cotton Bowl in December, and the Browns got a player ready to start right away.

Throughout the season, Ward proved that he was not only an excellent cover-corner, with the athletic ability to defend or intercept any ball thrown to his side of the field, but he also showed an ability— and willingness— to lay big hits on receivers who dared to catch the ball in his general vicinity.

Congrats to Ward on continuing to prove that Ohio State’s secondary is the #BIA.

So, how many Buckeyes will end up getting picked in the first round?

It’s finally here!

Months after the Cotton Bowl win closed out Ohio State’s 2017 season, the moment more than a dozen Buckeyes have been waiting for is finally upon us: the 2018 NFL Draft.

Tonight marks the first round of the event, and will get underway at 8 p.m. ET on NFL Network, ESPN/ESPN 2 and Fox. Each team will have 10 minutes to make their picks this round, and the Day 1 festivities should end just before midnight.

We know at least one Buckeye is expected to hear his name on Thursday, Denzel Ward, but there’s a chance that Billy Price and Sam Hubbard could end up sneaking into the first round too. All-in-all, there could be upwards of 8 to 9 Ohio State players picked throughout this draft weekend — and more should end up joining teams as undrafted free-agents.

We’ll update this post as each pick is made and debate teams’ choices in the comments.

When Greg Schiano arrived it Columbus, it didn’t take long for him to figure out Denzel Ward had a bright future in the NFL.

“He’s really a very, very good NFL prospect. He’ll be a very good corner in the NFL.”

-Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano on cornerback Denzel Ward via Patrick Murphy, Bucknuts

Denzel Ward shouldn’t have to wait too long to hear his name called tonight in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Ward will join Eli Apple, Marshon Lattimore, Malik Hooker, and Gareon Conley as recent Ohio State defensive backs taken in the draft’s first round.

When Greg Schiano came to Ohio State in 2015, he knew he the Buckeyes had a special NFL prospect in Ward. Despite dealing with a wrist injury, Ward was Ohio State’s third starter at cornerback, and tied for the team-lead with nine pass breakups. With Lattimore and Conley moving on to the NFL following the 2016 season, Ward was able to make an even bigger name for himself in 2017.

Ward lived up to the hype last season, registering 15 pass breakups, which ranked in the Top 10 in the country. After a strong junior season, Ward bolstered his draft stock by running a 4.32 40-yard dash, tying for the fastest time at the NFL Draft Combine. Being able to learn and grow under defensive coordinator Greg Schiano and cornerbacks coach Kerry Coombs, along with his on-field skills, have set expectations high for what Ward could do in the NFL.

The only real downside to Ward for some scouts, who stands at 5-foot-11, is his size, but he is still only an inch shorter than Lattimore and Conley. Even with being a little smaller than your prototypical corner, many teams are high on Ward. There is talk the cornerback could be taken as high as fifth in the draft, and even if he falls, Ward shouldn’t last longer than the late teens.

“Now that we know each other, we have got to go, and we have to roll our sleeves up and make sure we are on the same page. We have to work even harder than what we did this spring. We got after it this spring, in the meeting rooms, out at practice and things like that, now we have to multiply that by like 15.”

-Ohio State cornerbacks coach Taver Johnson via James Grega, Eleven Warriors

As if replacing cornerbacks coach Kerry Coombs wasn’t hard enough, new cornerbacks coach Taver Johnson also has to replace Denzel Ward, who will likely go in the first round of tonight’s NFL Draft. At least Johnson does have a bit of a leg up, as he’ll have veterans Kendall Sheffield and Damon Arnette coming back to lean on.

With the way Ohio State likes to rotate cornerbacks, Johnson is going to need a couple more of the younger Buckeyes to step up at cornerback to fill the void. Jeffrey Okudah already started to assert himself last season, and was leaned on heavily in the Rose Bowl against USC, as he was on the field for 62 snaps.

Okudah missed spring practice due to shoulder surgery, which allowed Shaun Wade and Marcus Williamson to state their case for playing time in 2018. Wade made some noise during the spring game, as his interception of Tate Martell was the only turnover of the game.

Freshmen Tyreke Johnson and Sevyn Banks also impressed coaches during spring practices with how quickly they were able to pick up in a short amount of time. If Johnson and Banks are able to continue the growth they showed during the spring game, Ohio State could see a couple more cornerbacks drafted high in the NFL down the line.

“I thought the final home match was the last time, but it’s good. I’m glad to be at St. John and have one last chance (to play here).”

-Ohio State men’s volleyball player Nicolas Szerszen via Bill Rabinowitz, The Columbus Dispatch

If Ohio State’s men’s volleyball team wants to win their third national title in a row, they’ll first have to take care of business against King University in a play-in game tonight at St. John Arena. The winner of tonight’s matchup will move on to face UC-Irvine in Los Angeles on Tuesday night.

With the West Coast Conference splitting into two this year, the men’s volleyball NCAA Tournament expanded from six teams to seven, meaning a play-in game is now necessary. Despite being the fifth seed out of the seven teams, the Buckeyes have been forced into the play-in game because it is cheaper for King University, which is located in Bristol, Tennessee, to drive to Columbus than to fly to Boston to take on Harvard, which is the sixth-seeded team.

Despite money being the reason Ohio State has to play in tonight’s play-in game, the Buckeyes are trying to find some positives about the contest. After winning the national championship the last two seasons, the Buckeyes have seen a lot of their roster from those national title teams graduate. Tonight’s game will give the Buckeyes a chance to gain some NCAA Tournament experience without having to leave home.

After being the favorite heading into last year’s NCAA Tournament, Ohio State is an underdog this year heading into the tournament. The role, along with feeling slighted by the NCAA for having to compete in tonight’s play-in game, could be just what the Buckeyes need to light a fire under the team and lead Ohio State to a three-peat.

— Ohio State Buckeyes (@OhioStAthletics) April 26, 2018

After the conclusion of the winter Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings, Ohio State sits in fourth place, behind Stanford, Penn State, and Michigan, and just in front of North Carolina State. After the final fall standings were released, Ohio State sat in a tie for 65th place, but a strong winter sports showing saw the Buckeyes rocket up the standings.

Ohio State’s rise during the winter was highlighted by a second-place finish by the wrestling team, along with third-place by the men’s and women’s ice hockey teams and the fencing team. The rifle team and men’s gymnastics teams finished in seventh-place, while the women’s gymnastics team finished in 13th place.

Ohio State totaled 730.75 Directors Cup points during the winter, to bring their total for the year to 830.75 points. While Stanford has jumped out to a huge lead with 1,104 Directors Cup points, the Buckeyes are still within striking distance of Big Ten foes Penn State and Michigan, who currently have 889.25 and 881.50 Directors Cup points, respectively. Ohio State should be able to make up even more ground as the Buckeyes are one of seven teams left alive for the national title in men’s volleyball.
