The reins of the offense are now solely in Haskins’ hands as the season approaches

“Just had the opportunity to play in the biggest rivalry in all of sports, and just being able to go in there and not really worry, just play one play at a time. Being able to go out and win puts a lot of confidence in you just because your team saw you do it, the world saw you do it and it just gives you a lot of confidence going forward.”

- Dwayne Haskins via Ryan Ginn, Land of 10

Joe Burrow has decided to transfer from Ohio State and will continue his athletic career at another school that is yet to be determined, but one thing that is determined is that Dwayne Haskins is now going to be the starting quarterback this fall. Haskins was the favorite entering spring camp, but Burrow impressed the coaching staff enough that by the time the spring game came around, it was about even.

But, with Burrow now heading out of the program, it’s safe to assume that the coaching staff will go ahead with Haskins. Of course, Haskins also had an advantage entering the offseason after leading the Buckeyes in a comeback win over Michigan in Ann Arbor.

But now that the quarterback battle is finished, it’s Haskins’ team. Heading into the season opener there won’t be any questions about who should start or any doubt regarding the team’s mentality about if they chose the right guy. I

t’s Haskins’ show, and it’s up to him to live up to the hype and lead the team to wins. He’ll get his chance as a first-time starter against Oregon State in the season opener.

“That is the thing about The Ohio State University — you are right in our meeting room, we have [posters] up of all of those guys from [Gareon] Conley to [Marshon] Lattimore to Malcolm Jenkins to Vinnie Clark to Shawn Springs. It can go on and on, and those guys understand the expectation and they see those guys come back.”

- Ryan Ginn, Land of 10

Another NFL draft has gone past, and another Ohio State defensive back went in the first round. Denzel Ward was taken by the Cleveland Browns with the fourth overall pick in this year’s draft. Some were surprised that the Browns didn’t go with defensive end Bradley Chubb, but regardless, it had to please Urban Meyer and the Ohio State coaching staff.

Not only does the first-round pick reflect well on the Buckeyes, but it’s going to help recruiting in the long run as well. Marshon Lattimore being the Defensive Rookie of the Year last season, immediately followed up by Ward going fourth overall? That shows something is going right in Columbus.

It also helps current defensive backs get some key advice from NFL players like Lattimore and Malik Hooker who will visit the team from time to time and help give pointers on how to approach the game. With Kerry Coombs moving on to the NFL, the Buckeyes will take any help they can get from their former college stars.

“Jallow on Monday was named one of 32 players who will train at the national team camp, held May 31-June 2 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.”

- Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

Musa Jallow of the Ohio State basketball team received an invite to the under-18 USA men’s national team after playing as a 17-year-old true freshman under Chris Holtmann. Jallow averaged 2.5 points and 1.5 rebounds in 33 games at a pace of 14 minutes per game.

Jallow is expected to have a bigger role in the team next season, with Keita Bates-Diop headed to the NBA Combine and several other key members moving on from the team (except for Andrew Daksich who is sticking around Columbus as a GA). The Buckeyes are hoping Jallow soaks up a lot during his time with the national team, as he gets to play alongside some of the top players in the country — though many of them haven’t yet entered college.

Kansas head coach Bill Self will lead the way for the team and even some Ohio State targets will be playing including some 2019 prospects such as center Trayce Jackson-Davis. You can read more about the event in the link above.

As is usually the case, Burrow’s Buckeye teammates took to Twitter following the news.

It was a decision that many were expecting, but it doesn’t make the news for teammates and fans any easier. Quarterback Joe Burrow has officially announced his plan to transfer following last weekend’s graduation, and there’s a whole host of potential landing spots for the now former-Buckeye.

As the rumor-mill heats up about where the QB might land, let’s take a quick moment to see the impact that he’s had on his teammates, and how they’re handling the news that he’s leaving.

Lets start with the QBs he’s been competing with

Good luck to you brotha! Appreciate you for making me better, see you at the top https://t.co/aGUS8WpGE8

— Dwayne Haskins, Jr (@dh_simba7) May 8, 2018

My dawg, this hurts to know you won’t be here anymore because you made everyone on our team a better person when you were around. Thanks for being someone I could lean on during my struggles. The next school is going to be getting a special player! Love you brotha. https://t.co/laGH6xYLPp

— TATE MARTELL (@TheTateMartell) May 8, 2018

One could easily assume that the QB competition left some issues among the three signal-callers, but there appears to be no ill-will between the Buckeyes as they tried to improve themselves day in and day out. Similar to the bond that J.T. Barrett and Cardale Jones developed in the trenches, Burrow will certainly have brothers for life after his stint in Columbus.

Yes... we are all in competition with each other.

But at the end of the day, they are all my brothers and I want the best for them. I forever got their back. https://t.co/7sSYFmATxq

— TATE MARTELL (@TheTateMartell) May 8, 2018
Some of Burrow’s other teammates took to Twitter too

You a real one, I’m going to miss you brother.

— Demetrius Knox (@Meech_Dream14) May 8, 2018

Love you bro!

— Isaiah Prince (@ThePrince_59) May 8, 2018

Gonna miss ya bub. Love ya and excited to see you ball wherever you end up! .. Rent still due on the 1st tho... https://t.co/tZMoubOpLi

— Justin Hilliard (@JHilliard47) May 8, 2018

— Terry McLaurin (@TheTerry_25) May 8, 2018

Good luck to you brother. Someone’s getting a good one. https://t.co/OykbgqTK0T

— Brady Taylor (@beTaylor79) May 8, 2018
Some former Buckeyes are also voicing their reactions

No surprise here. I expect him to be an impact starter right away wherever the destination is. https://t.co/xyakFwukrA

If you’re looking for some more insight from Burrow and/or his family about his decision to transfer, you shouldn’t hold your breath. It appears that Burrow’s lone-statement will be all that the QB and his family will address publicly.

Just heard from Joe Burrow’s father Jim who tells me, “We’ve made a decision at this point to not make any further statements or do any interviews at this time.” @OSUCoachMeyer likewise. @TheFeverABC6

With vacant starting spots limited on the line, the former four-star recruit will continue his playing career elsewhere.

UPDATE: Just minutes after Ohio State quarterback Joe Burrow announced his intention to transfer, another former Buckeye updated his transfer plans. Former OSU offensive lineman Matthew Burrell will be continuing his playing career at Sam Houston State, beginning this fall.

The Bearkats are in the FCS’s Southland Conference and lost in the semifinals to eventual champion North Dakota State.

Not sitting out... Committed & Playing football next year @ Sam Houston State

— Matthew Burrell Jr (@Burrell_69) May 8, 2018

Via a social media post, redshirt sophomore offensive lineman Matthew Burrell announced that he would be transferring from Ohio State following the recently wrapped spring practice.

A former four-star recruit out of Woodbridge, Virginia, Burrell had been thought to be in contention to take over one of the vacant spots on the line this season, but as other options emerged, his standing in the rotation declined.

Screen_Shot_2018_04_18_at_5.56.30_PM.png

After playing in 13 games during his redshirt freshman campaign in 2016, Burrell saw action in 12 games last season, including the final 10. However, with Thayer Munford working his way into a likely starting position, and redshirt-junior Josh Alabi and true-freshman Nicholas Petit-Frere likely to see time this fall, there just weren’t a lot of options for the 6-foot-3, 306-pounder to crack the starting lineup.

Following the spring game, head coach Urban Meyer said of the battle for offensive line playing time:

Yeah, we’ve done both. Decision hasn’t been made yet. But Isaiah has been playing a lot of left, too. And I think we’re just trying to get that rotation—who’s going to be that third left tackle—obviously we got a good one coming in, too. Josh Alabi; Nicolas Petit (-Frere), a guy that’s been here, watching. A very talented young man. Alabi, has also earned the right to get a little bit. Just trying to figure out what’s best.

In his social media post, Burrell thanked everyone at Ohio State for his opportunities, and said that he was not sure where he would continue his collegiate career. Wherever the lineman ends up, he will have two years of eligibility remaining.

We wish Burrell the best at wherever his journey takes him.

Rumors suggest that Burrow could end up a Gator.

After months of speculation, today it was confirmed that redshirt-junior quarterback Joe Burrow will exercise his rights as an Ohio State graduate and transfer to another school to continue his playing career.

After weeks of struggling with this decision, I have decided to leave Ohio State and explore other options. My teammates and coaches all know the love I feel for them. I will decide where I will play next year in the coming weeks.

— Joey Burrow (@Joe_Burrow10) May 8, 2018

For more than a year, Burrow has been locked in a competition with Dwayne Haskins to be the heir-apparent to J.T. Barrett as the Buckeyes’ starting quarterback. Following the spring game in April 2017, Burrow appeared to have the lead over then-redshirt freshman Haskins. However, an injury less than a week before the start of the season stunted his progress, and Haskins thrived in the back-up role, especially against Michigan.

Since Burrow graduated at the end of the spring semester, he is immediately eligible to play for his new school, and will have a full two years to prove that he is ready to be a college football starting quarterback, and perhaps even that he deserves a look by NFL scouts. Neither of those things would have been guaranteed had he stayed in Columbus.

Now that Burrow’s decision is official, rumors have begun to circulate that he could be headed for Gainesville.

Ohio State insider @BillBankGreene says he's hearing QB Joe Burrow could be considering #Gators as grad transfer destination, goes in-depth on his current situation - https://t.co/aBu56xhR6c pic.twitter.com/5tjpNYUSjm

— Thomas Goldkamp (@ThomasGoldkamp) May 7, 2018

Wherever Burrow ends up, his departure puts the OSU quarterback room in flux. This essentially guarantees that Haskins will be the Buckeyes’ starting quarterback in the fall, with redshirt-freshman Tate Martell and true-freshman Matthew Baldwin competing to be the backup. Second-year walk-on Kory Curtis rounds out the room.

It’s been quite a while since an OSU starting quarterback has gotten through a season unscathed, so if that trend continues this season, no matter whom is Haskins’ backup, he will have zero college snaps under his belt. The only silver lining to this is that Martell has long been expected to have his own package installed into the offense this fall, no matter who the starter is. Whether that happens with him as QB2 remains to be seen, but hopefully whomever is the backup will be able to get some experience in the normal course of the season just in case anything unexpected happens to Haskins.

Whether it is with the Gators, or somewhere else, we wish Burrow the best as he continues his college career.

Could the Buckeyes land Michigan’s top 2020 in-state stud?

In recruiting, protecting the borders around your home state is key to building a successful program. When you look at the talent within the state lines of Ohio, it’s clear to see why Urban Meyer and his staff want to keep the best at home and suiting up for the Buckeyes. While Ohio State can’t keep every in-state prospect (mainly due to the amount of D1 Ohio prospect each year) it’s still important to make the top homegrown kids your top priority and recruit your own backyard first and foremost.

On the other hand, when you steal a prized recruit from another state, especially a conference foe, that too will please a coaching staff. So many times Ohio has been a hotbed for other states to recruit. With a football tradition rich program in nearly every city of the Buckeye state, coaches from all over the country have taken notice over the years. One program in particular: “the team up north”.

Ever since the start of Urban Meyer’s tenure for the Ohio State Buckeyes, invading Michigan and taking their guys has been a common trend. With talent such as Damon Webb and Mike Weber, Ohio State has struck gold in the Detroit area—and the signs of that continuing are pretty strong.

In the 2020 recruiting cycle, Michigan native Justin Rogers looks to be Ohio State’s top target in their rival state; and all things considering, the Buckeyes look pretty good right now in their pursuit for Rogers. He’s the prototypical offensive guard you want right now, as well as at the next level. With still two full prep seasons to be played for Oak Park, Justin already stands at 6-foot-4, 280 pounds. Thanks to his grueling work ethic, expect his size and strength to increase even more as his high school career carries on.

According to 247sports, Rogers is listed as Michigan’s top in-state kid for the 2020 class, the second best at his position, and the 54th best prospect in the entire class. It’s easy to see why this prep star has well over thirty scholarship offers.

After a dominating performance at this past Saturday’s Nike The Opening Midwest Regional Camp at Massillon Washington High School, we were able to talk with Justin directly. Check out what he had to say to Land-Grant Holy Land below.

LGHL: How much do you truly like Ohio State? Would you say that Ohio State is in your top list of schools, specifically top three?

Justin: Definitely. Ohio State is one of my top schools. I really like Ohio State and what they have to offer.

LGHL: Who is your personal recruiter for Ohio State? Who talks to you the most?

Justin: My recruiter is Coach Stud. I talk with Coach Studrawa the most since he’s the offensive line coach. I talk with him often and saw him yesterday (Sunday) on campus at Ohio State, since I was in Ohio for the Midwest Regional The Opening Nike camp in Massillon.

LGHL: How did The Opening Regional Camp go for you personally?

Justin: The camp went really well. I received an invite to the official The Opening camp in Oregon. I also recently received the Rivals 5-Star Challenge invite so I have both Nike and Rivals camp invitations now.

LGHL: In your opinion, what are the two things that stick out to you the most regarding Ohio State. In other words, what comes to mind when thinking about the Buckeyes?

Justin: When I think about Ohio State, it’s a school that really produces. They constantly send guys to the NFL each year. The other is if you want to go to Ohio State, you have to compete to get on the field and play. The competition there definitely comes to mind.

LGHL: Do you have another returning visit planned to Ohio State soon?

Justin: I think I am coming back to Ohio State this June, but it’s not to camp, I will just come down to visit and talk with the coaches again.

LGHL: Your Oak Park team has tons of talent, what are you most excited for this upcoming season and what are your goals for the year?

Justin: Yes, we have a really good team for this coming season. Honestly, the focus is getting to the state championship and winning the ring. I really want the ring and to win it all this season.

Justin’s Oak Park team has quite the talent, and you may recognize their signal caller, Dwan Mathis, as Ohio State was his most recent offer. While he is currently committed to Michigan State, Mathis, in addition to Rogers, was on campus this weekend as he too competed at the Nike The Opening camp in Massillon. As Ohio State looks to try and at least land one of the two, when looking at Justin, it’s important to note that while it’s certainly early, the Buckeyes do own 100 percent of the crystal ball predictions on 247sports. Yes, home-state schools as well as others may be in the picture, but as Justin himself pointed out, the Buckeyes are definitely in his top list. As he competed this weekend against another Buckeye hopeful to be, Zach Harrison, also at Massillon’s Nike The Opening camp location, Rogers held his own.

All of the Ohio State followers would love to see these two together competing at practice in the same uniform in the years to come. Fortunately for the Buckeyes that’s not too out of the question to consider, thanks to the possible hint below.

Good work bro one day we can play on the same team @Zacharrison88 pic.twitter.com/ojOusgSgw2

— Justin Rogers (@AllAmerican52JR) May 6, 2018

A special thank you to Justin for taking the time to speak with Land-Grant Holy Land. Best of luck this upcoming 2018 season.

The Buckeyes continue to strengthen its future by offering one of the best safeties in the 2020 recruiting class.

Ohio State’s 2019 recruiting class is starting to gain momentum. With a total of six commitments in the month of April, the Buckeyes doubled their total number of commits in the class, skyrocketing the class ranking to No. 8 in the country and No. 2 in the Big Ten.

The Ohio State coaching staff will continue to build on this year’s class but being that this coaching staff is one of the best at recruiting in the country, the Buckeyes will also be working to ensure the 2020 class follows suit.

The Buckeyes have already been successful in securing their first commit in 2020 when four-star OT Jake Wray pledged his services to the program. The coaches want to continue on this run and did so Monday by offering one of the top safeties in the class.

Makari Paige (West Bloomfield, MI / West Bloomfield) may only be a sophomore in high school but he has shown enough to gain the attention of some of the top programs in the country. Already holding a reported 10 offers from schools like Michigan, Iowa, Michigan State, Purdue, Indiana, Pitt, Kentucky and Boston College, Paige can now add Ohio State to that list.

AGTG ! Blessed to receive an offer from THE Ohio State University ❗❕ #GOBUCKS ⭕pic.twitter.com/goV5MVodyz

— MAKARI PAIGE ¹ᵏ (@makaripaige) May 7, 2018

Being so early in Paige’s recruitment, the two in-state schools Michigan and Michigan State are the favorites in this race, with Michigan holding all four of the 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions.

However, with a moniker like “DBU” it can be assumed that an offer from Ohio State will give him something to think about at the very least. He has so far taken an unofficial visit to Michigan State and if the Buckeyes want to have a shot in landing him, getting him on campus multiple times is a must.

While many national recruiting databases haven’t released their rankings for the 2020 recruiting class, Paige will likely be one of the bigger names to follow. 247Sports views him as the No. 189 overall player in the class and the No. 9 safety. If Paige has a successful next two seasons, his name will only shoot up those rankings.

Update on the 2019 QB class

Urban Meyer has gone on record stating that this year’s crop of quarterbacks is not very deep. That being said, there are multiple names that the Buckeyes are looking at. The past few days have been vital in regards to how the position will pan out for the team.

Over the weekend, the Buckeyes hosted Michigan State QB commit Dwan Mathis (Belleville, MI / Oak Park) only days after receiving an offer from the school. Mathis visited the program after participating in a nearby camp.

Mathis has been committed to the Spartans since September of last year and is the No. 11 pro-style QB in the 2019 recruiting class.

However, Mathis isn’t the only QB the Buckeyes are looking at flipping from a Big Ten school. First reported by Adam Friedman of Rivals.com, four-star QB and Wisconsin commit Graham Mertz (Mission, KS / Blue Valley North) took an unofficial visit to Ohio State Monday.

Mertz is a four-star QB and is one of the more talented pro-style QB’s in this year’s group. The 247Sports Composite Rankings have him listed as the No. 5 pro QB in the country and the No. 148 overall recruit.

“I’m going to stop by Ohio State on Monday and check it out,” Mertz said to Friedman. “We’re here for an extra day because that’s how our flights worked out so we figured we should go over there and check it out. The coaches are excited. They’ve been pushing for a visit for a few months. I’ve never been there before.”

Ohio State is not the only program ramping up their communication with Mertz though, despite the commitment to Wisconsin. More than 10 schools have offered the QB since his pledge to the Badgers and the thought is that his commitment is not as strong as it first was.

While the increased attention is likely giving him something to think about, he continues to say the things Wisconsin wants to hear. He told Friedman that the Badgers still sit atop his list.

Though the Buckeyes are increasing their contact with both Mathis and Mertz, their No. 1 at the position is four-star QB Grant Gunnell (Houston, TX / St. Pius X.) Ohio State is viewed as the favorite to land Gunnell who is listed as the No. 3 pro-style QB in the class and the No. 96 overall recruit.

Gunnell is expected to announce his decision in about a month and if everything goes as planned, the Buckeyes will have their desired QB. However, if Gunnell spurns the Buckeyes and decides to head elsewhere, expect Urban Meyer and assistant coach Ryan Day to go all in on Mertz.
