OSU’s tournament was a short one, so let’s just talk about how Lilli Piper set the school’s new single-season home run record.

The No. 5 Ohio State Buckeyes faced off against No. 12 Iowa in the first round of the 2018 Big Ten Tournament on Thursday night, and guess what? Lilli Piper hit another home run.

The Buckeyes didn’t win, and it got pretty ugly near the end. Despite a close 1-1 score for the first six innings, the Hawkeyes picked up four runs in the top of the seventh for a 5-1 victory. Iowa will face No. 4 seeded Northwestern — who had a first-round bye — on Friday at 8 p.m. ET (on the Big Ten Network) in the quarterfinals.

With Shelby McCombs on the mound for the Buckeyes, Iowa’s Mallory Killian grounded out to 2b to open the matchup, followed by Allie Wood striking out swinging and Angela Schmiederer grounding out to first for a quick top of the first.

Then, my favorite part of Ohio State softball: the at-bats.

Bailee Sturgeon struck out swinging, but then Lilli “The GOAT” Piper stepped up to the plate. With a 2-2 count, the team’s leading home run-hitter nailed her 20th of the season to set the Buckeyes up 1-0. McCombs and Niki Carver would both strike out swinging to close out the first inning of the night.

It was another quick at-bat for the Hawkeyes, with McKenzie Schneider being walked and three of her teammates striking and grounding out. But it was also a quick second inning for the Buckeyes who went three-and-out heading into the third.

Finally, things started to get interesting with Iowa back at the plate. Daniella Ibarra opened with a single to center field, but was thrown out at second base shortly thereafter off of a hit by Cheyenne Pratt. It wasn’t in vein, Pratt stole second and ended up scoring on a passed ball three at-bats later, tying the Buckeyes 1-1 in the bottom of the third. Schmiederer grounded out to shortstop following the score for Iowa’s third out of the inning.

With Ohio State back in the dugout, Amy Balich led off with a fly ball to centerfield, but Taylor White followed it up with a shot to right field, making it to first. With Bailee Sturgeon at the plate, White stole second as Sturgeon eventually took first on a walk. The Hawkeyes were smart to give Piper a free-pass as she made her way back to the plate, advancing the runners and loading the bases.

Unfortunately, similar to inning No. 1, McCombs and Carver both followed up Piper’s at-bat with strikeouts, stranding three Buckeyes on base -- and wasting a prime opportunity to take the lead. The third inning finished with the teams tied 1-1.

The Hawkeyes got on base early in the fourth inning, but Havyn Monteer — who was pinch-running for Libby — was quickly thrown out by Ohio State when she was caught trying to steal second.

The rest of the inning went pretty quickly with a single to short stop by Bogar, followed by two outs to finish out the top of the fourth. Ohio State wasn’t able to do much better, with one hit and two players left on base heading into the fifth, with the score still tied 1-1.

Ohio State pitcher Shelby McCombs would strike out three Hawkeyes in a row for a super quick top of the inning. Back at the plate, the Buckeyes opened with a Sturgeon line-drive to third base for an out. Piper stepped up and hit a single to left field, taking first base and eventually stealing second.

With another batter out before and after her second base snag, the Buckeyes would close out the fifth inning with Piper left hanging, and the score still at one all.

Iowa’s next at-bat would see six batters come to the plate, but no runs scored with two players left on the bases to close out the top of the sixth -- McCombs also claimed her eighth strikeout of the night. It was a quick three-and-out for Ohio State at the plate to close out the inning.

The Hawkeyes started off the top of the seventh strong with a single, a bunt, and an errant pitch that led to Lea Thompson advancing to third, setting Iowa up in scoring position. The Buckeyes called for a pitching change, moving McCombs to DH and Morgan Ray taking over the circle for Ohio State.

The change didn’t help much, with another wild pitch bringing Thompson home, letting Iowa take their first lead of the night, 2-1, with no outs and Ibarro on third. The Buckeyes would get their first out of the inning with a play at home, keeping Ibarro from advancing the Hawkeyes’ lead.

Iowa would load the bases again thanks to a couple of hits and a Schmiederer walk. Despite Ray getting her first strikeout of the game, she also had another errant pitch, advancing all the runners and putting the Buckeyes down 3-1 with two outs. The first three runs for the Hawkeyes came courtesy of passed balls and wild pitches.

However, the next at-bat saw Libby single to left field, bringing in another runner, to make it 4-1 — and increasingly more challenging for the Buckeyes to bounce back — with runners still on third and first.

It was a short stint on the mound for Ray who was swapped with McCombs, as the Buckeyes tried like hell to get their third out to finally stop the bleeding. (Narrator: the bleeding didn’t stop.) Schneider stepped up to the plate for the Hawkeyes and got an RBI single, making it 5-1, Iowa. Finally, Thompson grounded out to short stop to end the Buckeyes’ misery.

Finally with a chance to put some runs on the board, the Buckeyes opened the bottom of the seventh with Stevens connecting on her first pitch, with a single to right field. White was walked right after, filling two bases with zero outs. Sturgeon connected next, but White was thrown out at second — we can debate about whether or not she wasn’t really safe — leaving runners on third and first.

Just like her second at-bat, Piper was once again walked, loading the bases with McCombs heading to the plate. The Buckeye pitcher would go down swinging, as would Carver to close out the seventh inning, the game, and Ohio State’s run in this year’s Big Ten Tournament.

The highly-touted recruit from the Class of 2016 is hoping to rebound after missing most of last season.

“Last season was definitely frustrating from me. Just injury-wise, who doesn’t want to be on the field? And my injury was holding me back from being who I really was, so I definitely was frustrated.”

-Ohio State H-back Demario McCall via Sam Hellman, Bucknuts

As if the Ohio State backfield wasn’t scary enough with J.K. Dobbins and Mike Weber at running back, the Buckeyes will head into the 2018 season with a healthy Demario McCall. Even though it is unlikely McCall is going to wrestle many carries away from Dobbins and Weber, he could make a big impact for the Buckeyes at H-back, a position he moved to during the offseason.

After spending most of last season on the shelf with a hernia injury, McCall is already doing his best to make up for lost time. In the spring game, McCall made his presence known with 165 yards and two touchdowns. If McCall is able to carry that momentum over to the 2018 season, Ohio State’s offense could be even tougher for defenses to handle.

The benefit of having a healthy McCall isn’t just limited to the offense, as he could make plenty of noise in the return game. The speed and elusiveness that McCall possesses could set Ohio State up with great field position and put defenses on their heels. Every little bit of an advantage McCall can give Ohio State will help, especially with the pressure that will be placed on new starting quarterback Dwayne Haskins.

“Of the 26 scholarship players that Ohio State brought in as part of its recruiting class of 2015, only 13 of those players remain with the Buckeyes.”

-Dan Hope, Eleven Warriors

On Tuesday, quarterback Joe Burrow announced his intentions to transfer out of the program, leaving just half of the recruiting class of 2015 still on the Ohio State roster. While to some, the high number of players already having left the school might seem high, it is about in line with previous recruiting classes under head coach Urban Meyer.

Since 2012, which was Meyer’s first year recruiting as head coach with the school, Ohio State has seen 10-plus players from each recruiting class leave the program for either the NFL or to transfer before suiting up for their fourth year. The 2012 recruiting class saw 13 of the 25 recruits leave before the 2015 season, which tied this year as the high-mark under Meyer. The recruiting class that saw the least amount of players leave before their fourth-year was the 2014 recruiting class, where 10 of 23 recruits left before the 2017 season.

One of the reasons for the high number of departures from Ohio State before their fourth-season with the program is because of the amount of players the Buckeyes are able to put in the NFL. While this year only saw Denzel Ward and Jerome Baker leave the program early — not including Sam Hubbard, who despite having eligibility left, did graduate —, the 2014 class saw five of the 10 early departures move on to the professional level.

Another reason for the high number of players leaving for the NFL or transferring from the program is the amount of talent Ohio State brings in on a yearly basis. With the battle for playing time in Columbus being a constant challenge, sometimes players don’t see the amount of playing time they expected to see, and feel it is better to move on to other schools where they might get some more exposure and a better shot at realizing their dreams of playing at the professional level.

On the surface, the high turnover of Ohio State players might be a cause for concern, but any school is going to have at least some turnover. With the high expectations that have been set at Ohio State by Meyer and his coaching staff, there are going to be some players who decide it is in their best interest to leave Columbus. Have no fear though, there will be plenty of talented players waiting to hopefully make a name for themselves with the Buckeyes.

“It’s everything. We talk about it all the time, since the day I got here. Especially for Ty, it’s been a dream of his since he got into coaching. This year, maybe more than the other few years I’ve been on the team, we really have a chance.”

-Ohio State men’s tennis player Martin Joyce via Bill Rabinowitz, The Columbus Dispatch

After going 29-2 during the regular season, the third-ranked Ohio State’s men’s tennis team will open up the NCAA Tournament at home on Friday against East Tennessee State, with the winner moving on to play either Kentucky or Virginia Tech on Saturday. The Buckeyes will be looking to exercise some demons, as they have gone 24-0 at home in the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament over the last 12 years, but only have one indoor title to show for their work.

If Ohio State is able to move on to the Round of 16 in Winston-Salem, one of the concerns for the Buckeyes could be the weather, since the weather in Columbus so far this spring has been less than ideal. If the weather in North Carolina is warm, it could pose a problem for the Buckeyes, who haven’t had much experience playing outdoors in the heat this year. One of Ohio State’s two losses this year came at Georgia in March, with the Buckeyes getting shutout 4-0.

After making the NCAA singles final two years ago, Mikael Torpegaard is hoping he can not only lead Ohio State to their first team title, but also help head coach Ty Tucker win his first NCAA team title with the Buckeyes. Despite having so much success as head coach without an NCAA team title, Tucker is cherishing the time he has left with the seniors on the team, and he is hoping there are a few more weekends of play left for them.

After finishing fourth in the NCAA Regional in Wisconsin, the Ohio State’s women’s golf team will participate in the NCAA Championships in Oklahoma next week. The NCAA Championships will be held from May 18-23 in Stillwater. This marks the sixth time in the last eight years that the Buckeyes have earned a spot in the NCAA Championships, and the 22nd time in school history.

The Top 6 teams in the NCAA Regional earned spots in the NCAA Championship, with Ohio State tying Arizona State at 1-under for fourth place. The performance by the Buckeyes was even more impressive, considering the final round was affected by weather, which resulted in a shotgun start.

After earning medalist honors at the Big Ten Championships Jaclyn Lee was a standout for Ohio State in the NCAA Regional, with the junior finishing in second place at 8-under par. The next best Buckeye in the NCAA Regional was Niki Schroder, who tied for 17th place with her even-par performance after three rounds of golf.

With the former four-star recruit’s decision, the Buckeyes are now officially down to their scholarship limit.

Ohio State will have another roster spot open, with the announcement by cornerback Wayne Davis Jr. that he intends on finishing his academic and athletic careers elsewhere. Davis joins Joe Burrow and Matthew Burrell as Buckeyes on the move — with his transfer, the Buckeyes are now officially at the NCAA scholarship limit of 85.

Davis got to campus in 2016, before red-shirting during his freshman season. He was back on scholarship in 2017, but didn’t see any playing time thanks to a strong rotation of DB’s groomed under Kerry Coombs.

The 6’0, 195-pound native of Norfolk, Vir., will have three years of eligibility remaining wherever he ends up. He is a former OSU Scholar-Athlete, and was Virginia’s Gatorade Player of the Year as well as the state’s Player of the Year for the Associated Press.

We, here at Land-Grant Holy Land, wish the defensive back the best of luck as he looks for a new team to play for and another opportunity to earn some defensive snaps.

The Buckeyes are coming off a strong season finale win over Michigan as they look to make a long postseason run.

It’s been an up and down season for the Ohio State softball team, but after finishing their regular season finale with a run-rule victory over Michigan in Ann Arbor, the Buckeyes are ready to make a run in the postseason. The 2018 Big Ten Tournament gets underway on Thursday, and No. 5 Ohio State will face No. 12 Iowa at 8 pm ET (on the Big Ten Network).

The tournament is single elimination, with the winner of Thursday’s game advancing to face No. 4 Northwestern in the quarterfinals on Friday evening.

How did Ohio State’s 2018 season play out?

The Buckeyes fluctuated between being ranked and not ranked throughout the year. Ohio State climbed to No. 18 thanks to several 6-, 7- and 8-game win streaks. The team finished their 2018 campaign 34-13 and ranked No. 25 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll.

The solid season propelled the seven seniors on the squad to 133 wins (54 Big Ten wins) over the past four seasons, good for ninth all-time senior class in program history. This talented group isn’t done competing yet, and will look to end their career with some postseason hardware and accolades.

How did Ohio State fare against the rest of the Big Ten?

The Buckeyes finished the season 14-8 against conference opponents. They claimed series sweeps over Rutgers, Penn State, Michigan State, and Maryland, and went 2-1 against Wisconsin and 1-2 against Michigan. Unfortunately, they did not have any wins during their series against Indiana and Northwestern — not good news if the Buckeyes make it to the quarterfinals on Friday.

Their solo win against the Wolverines was a nice little momentum booster. OSU run-ruled Michigan in Ann Arbor — a first for TTUN since 2000 — in the team’s final game of the regular season. That’s all well and good, but that means Michigan won the first two games, and with those wins they claimed the overall No. 1 seed in the Big Ten Tournament as they clinched yet another outright B1G Championship.

As a team, the Buckeyes fared pretty well in the conference, however as individuals, they stood out. Not surprising, Ohio State leads the Big Ten with 62 home runs, and ranks No. 2 in the B1G in triples (11), doubles (74), and slugging percentage (.495).

What’s the series history between OSU and Iowa?

The Hawkeyes lead the overall series, 66-42, but the teams didn’t meet this season. During the 2017 series, Ohio State won two of the three games, 3-1 and 6-0, respectively.

That streak might continue in the Buckeyes’ favor, with Iowa claiming just a 20-31 record on the year, and just 6-16 against conference opponents. They finished their regular season with four straight losses, including a Purdue sweep, and will have to do something quick to regain some confidence.

Any Big Ten Tournament history?

This year’s tournament marks the 12th time the Buckeyes have made an appearance, and the sixth year straight — not surprisingly, the postseason streak has continued under super-winning head coach Kelly Kovach Schoenly.

Overall the Buckeyes are 16-14 in the Big Ten Tournament, and won their only title back in 2007. They made it through to the championship game in last year’s tournament, but ultimately fell 6-0 to the Minnesota Gophers.

This is their year.

Who to watch

You should watch every single Buckeye at-bat for the opportunity to see a fun home run, but if you’re looking for the “LeBron James Factor” of this squad, it’s Lilli Piper. Not just among the top of the Big Ten conference in a host of categories, but Piper sits at No. 5 nationally in home runs (19), No. 4 in home runs per game (.40), and No. 10 in slugging percentage (.899).

We’ve spent years watching the 2018 Ohio State draft class, and are passing along our fandom to the next level.

After weeks of preparing for the 2018 NFL Draft, the three-day event came and went and an impressive seven Ohio State Buckeyes heard their name called throughout the seven rounds, with a handful more signing with teams as undrafted free agents and accepting invites to rookie minicamps for a tryout.

As SB Nation’s go-to site for all things Ohio State, a few of the NFL team sites reached out to us at Land-Grant Holy Land to get some insights into the Buckeye rookies getting ready to join their rosters.

Here’s a running list of the Q&A links from our NFL team sites

An insider look at Jerome Baker - The Phinsider
“A two-year starter at weak-side linebacker in Ohio State’s 4-3 scheme, Jerome Baker will bring athleticism and playmaking potential to the Miami Dolphins defense. In Ohio State’s biggest games, Baker consistently stepped up his game.”

—Christopher Jason via Kevin Nogle

What Bengals fans should know about Sam Hubbard - Cincy Jungle
“Filling in for Joey Bosa was one of the toughest challenges that Hubbard could be asked to undertake. Fortunately, the rest of Ohio State’s defense was pretty deep, and allowed for rotating talent to help fill the void. Hubbard didn’t crack under pressure though and finished the 2016 season with 46 total tackles (8.5 for loss) and 3.5 sacks.”

—Alexis Chassen via Rebecca Toback

UDFA QB J.T. Barrett Brings a Winner’s Mindset to the Saints - Canal Street Chronicles
“During Barrett’s four years at Ohio State, the Buckeyes ran a fairly effective zone-read offense, and Barrett became pretty skilled at getting the read right the vast majority of the time.”

—Matt Tamanini via Chris Dunnells

Billy Price is much more than the Bengals’ new center - Cincy Jungle
“Aside from his stellar play at both left and right guard, Price was known as a leader for the Buckeyes. He was a big role model for young players, instilling in them the type of work ethic it takes to be successful at a place like OSU -- and in NFL.”

No. 5 Ohio State will start the postseason against No. 12 Iowa tonight.

The 2018 Big Ten Softball Tournament opens in just a few hours on Goodman Diamond in Madison, Wisc. After games featuring No. 7 Wisconsin and No. 10 Purdue, No. 6 Illinois and No. 11 Maryland, and No. 8 Michigan State and No. 9 Nebraska, the fifth-seeded Ohio State Buckeyes (34-13, 14-8) will start their postseason in the nightcap against the No. 12 Iowa Hawkeyes (20-31, 6-16) at approximately 8 p.m. ET (7 p.m. CT).

The single-elimination tournament’s top four seeds all received a bye into the second round, which will kick off on Friday.

10256201.jpeg
Big Ten Conference

After winning the regular season conference crown for the 20th time— and 10th in 11 years— the Michigan Wolverines own the No. 1-seed and are anchored by freshman pitcher Meghan Beaubien, who on Wednesday was named the conference’s Pitcher and Freshman of the Year. Beaubien is also one of the 10 finalists for this season’s USA Softball National Player of the Year. The pitcher leads the country with 32 wins and has posted 12 shutouts en route to a 0.90 ERA and 245 strikeouts as a freshman.

For the second year in a row, Minnesota catcher Kendyl Lindaman was named the B1G Player of the Year. Lindaman hit 19 home runs this season, while driving in 46 and slugging an impressive .850. The Buckeyes saw two players named to the All-Conference first-team: senior pitcher/utility player Shelby McCombs and junior shortstop Lilli Piper.

Despite being the No. 5 seed in the tournament, the Buckeyes are actually the highest-rated B1G team according to RPI at 27th, followed by Minnesota (28), Michigan (30), Northwestern (38), Nebraska (40), Wisconsin (46) and Illinois (58).

However, TTUN is the highest-ranked team in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll at 12th, with Minnesota and Ohio State coming in at 23rd and 25th respectively. For OSU to earn the conference’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament, they would likely have to get through Iowa, No. 4 Northwestern, Michigan, and either No. 2 Minnesota or No. 3 Indiana.

The Buckeyes did not play Iowa or Minnesota in the regular season, but were run-ruled by Northwestern twice (10-2 and 14-6) last month. As for Michigan, despite a historic win to end the season, the Wolverines won 2-of-3 over Ohio State on the season. Similarly, Indiana took all three games from the Bucks in late March.

As it sits now, based on their record, ranking, and RPI, OSU looks to be in good position to receive an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament, should they not win the B1G tourney. However, picking up a win or two over higher-seeded competition would certainly help their argument.

Throughout the weekend, Land-Grant Holy Land will be providing recaps, updates, and more from the Big Ten Softball tournament. Follow along here, and catch all of the action on the Big Ten Network and BTN2Go.

Early indicators have Max Johnson as a four-star signal-caller in the 2020 class.

The quarterback is one of the more important positions on the football field. Earlier in the week, the Ohio State Buckeyes went down a QB, as Joe Burrow announced that he was on the move to another program as a graduate transfer. Fortunately, OSU has talent on the QB depth chart with Dwayne Haskins, Tate Martell and Matthew Baldwin.

Over time, though, those QBs will move on to either the NFL Draft or graduation. You’ll always need to have a few signal-callers on the roster, and probably need to pick one up in each class. Last week, it was a Michigan State QB commit that picked up an offer from the Scarlet and Gray. This time around, an offer found its way to a promising class of 2020 prospect.

A 4-star offer on the gridiron...

Georgia is a state full of football talent. So, it’s not too surprising that OSU has gone into the Peach State to find top-tier talent. Max Johnson (Watkinsville, GA / Oconee County) is the latest prospect that jumped onto the Buckeyes’ radar, as he was handed an offer. Johnson made it known late Tuesday that he had the opportunity to suit up in the Scarlet and Gray.

Widespread recruiting grades aren’t in for Johnson, but 247sports already has an early evaluation. Currently, the recruiting site has the Georgia native as a four-star caliber talent. Additionally, 247sports has the 6-foot-3.5 passer as the No. 71 prospect in the entire ‘20 class. The best ranking for him comes at the pro-style QB position. Johnson comes in as the No. 3 QB—and his score of 93 is tied with four other signal-callers.

There’s a chance that a strong 2018 campaign could move him up as the No. 2 pro-style QB in the eyes of 247sports. But until other recruiting sites give out their grades for the 2020 class, it’s hard to judge where exactly he stands amongst his peers. But, it’s better to start off near the top.

Ohio State isn’t the first school to come knocking for the Oconee County star. Miami (FL), Florida State, Georgia and Auburn were already on the scene, and appear to be trending at the top for Johnson. Already, five crystal ball predictions have been casted for him. Three of the votes have him headed to Miami, while the remaining two have him penciled in for Florida State.

Last season, Max had a pretty good year statistically. He completed 124-of-235 passes for 1,918 yards, 10 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, according to his profile page on 247sports. If you wanted to see some of his sophomore year highlights, then you’re in luck! A highlight reel has been uploaded to Hudl—and can be seen below.

...and a 4-star offer on the hardwood

On Wednesday evening, it was the Ohio State basketball team that made a splash on the recruiting trail. Chris Holtmann’s program extended an offer to Drew Timme (Richardson, TX / Pierce) of the 2019 class.

As the title suggest, Timme is a four-star talent and is the 8th best prospect from Texas, according to the 247sports composite. He made the offer known via Twitter.

A power forward, Timme has a handful of offers already. Baylor, Alabama, Creighton and Xavier are just some of the schools that have made it known that they want him on their respective teams.

For the 2019 class, OSU does have one commitment already in Alonzo Gaffney. Gaffney, who committed to the Bucks on April 10, is graded as a five-star PF prospect.
