The Buckeyes dished out new offers to multiple prospects yesterday.

It’s the middle of May, which in the college football world means recruiting, recruiting, and recruiting. The Buckeye staff has been on the trails working tirelessly to bring the next batch of studs to Ohio State for the 2019 class. To the surprise of no one, the staff has already built a top-10 2019 class—and it’ll easily be near the top when all is said and done thanks to their efforts. With many more of their top targets set to give their pledge in the coming weeks and months, Ohio State is sure to see some continued good news to bolster their current cycle. As time for 2019 is certainly the first priority, the Buckeyes have already started on the future classes such as 2020 and 2021, hoping a head start will lead to solid relationships and of course, more top prospects headed to Columbus.

Headed to Illinois with the future in mind

One of the great aspects about being Ohio State in recruiting is not only dominating in your state for top prospects, but having the ability to recruit any and everywhere the football staff wants to. There’s seemingly nowhere the Buckeyes haven’t been able to go and secure the pledge of a top target. Another great aspect for the Buckeyes is being able to recruit in rival territories. While Illinois may not be a true rival, the state still plays home to Big Ten foes Illinois and Northwestern. While Ohio State usually wins both on and off the field for highly touted prospects against these two schools, it’s still common to have to fight against other conference rivals for any top recruit to come from Illinois.

Yesterday, Ohio State invaded Illinois—and meant business—as they sent out multiple offers. One prospect that was on the receiving end of the prolific Buckeye offer was 2021 defensive tackle Dominic Bass. Bass is a product of Chicago and attends Phillips Academy where the 6-foot-4, 250-pound stud has proven his worth on the gridiron. Only a high school sophomore, Bass probably can’t even attend the prom due to his age, but that really is the least of worries considering this prep star already holds double-digit offers from some of the more namely programs in the country. Schools such as Auburn, Florida, Michigan, Michigan State, Ole Miss, and now Ohio State have come calling for Bass, but more will surely follow suit.

Extremely blessed to say that I have received my 12th offer from The Ohio State University! #GoBuckeyes⭕pic.twitter.com/CsPlEzP5c7

— Dominic Bass³⁴ (@dominic_bass) May 18, 2018

Due to Dominic’s age, he does not have a current ranking on 247sports, but the time will come soon enough and it’s without a doubt Bass will be right at the top of the board. With so much time left in his recruitment, any school can work their way in to the sweepstakes, but Michigan is thought to be the very early front-runner in his recruitment. However, fortunately for Ohio State, when Urban Meyer goes against Michigan, he tends to win. After all, he’s undefeated head to head on the field, but hey, who’s counting right? Time will tell where they stand with Bass, but a relationship between the two will certainly start now with offer in hand.

Top prospect, sure, let’s bring him to Ohio State

Sticking in the Land of Lincoln, we said Ohio State was busy in Illinois yesterday and that’s nothing but the truth. Offering multiple top guys in the upcoming classes, the Buckeye staff , who’ve been incredible lately at landing receivers, decided it was time to try their luck again and do so in the 2020 class.

Enter, A.J. Henning, a 5-foot-10, 175-pound speedster from Frankfort, Ill., and you have the latest wideout to earn a Buckeye offer. Henning, a player that can line up out wide and also in the slot can do it all. He has the hands, speed, and the skills to be a major playmaker at the next level. With two full seasons still to be played in his prep career, it’s possible that more size and height could come, but even at his current stature, the infamous H-back role at Ohio State has his name all over it if he so chooses.

EXTREMELY BLESSED TO RECEIVE AN OFFER FROM THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY!!⭕#GoBuckeyes pic.twitter.com/MrJnMrcBAJ

— AJ Henning3️⃣ (@AJHenning3) May 17, 2018

Henning is no new name to many though as he currently grades out as not only the top overall prospect in Illinois for his class, but is also considered to be the fourth best receiver in the entire country, making him the 23rd best player at any spot in the nation, according to 247sports. An impressive kid to say the very least, A.J. holds over 20 scholarship offers and is currently thought to be a Notre Dame lean. While the Irish and anyone else would love to have this talent, the Buckeyes will make their best pitch and when that happens, anything is possible. As always, the Buckeyes and Urban Meyer always have a shot even if it’s not a great one. If Henning gets to campus in the future you can bet Ohio State will be in this one until the pen hits the paper.

To the the Lone Star State we go

If there’s a top five ranking in the country for high school football states and recruiting it probably consists of Florida, Texas, Ohio, Georgia and California—with more states in arguments for one of those five spots. Point being though, Texas is a state that will always find itself at or near the top of the boards when you’re talking about prep football and talent within the borders. The Lone Star State has been nothing but good to the Buckeyes and that’s exactly why Meyer and his gang have made it a priority to continue recruiting Texas as if it’s in their own back yard. With so many elite dudes each and every year, the Buckeyes know if they can set up camp in Texas, they’ll be well taken care of.

Yesterday, Ohio State was back camping down south again as they sent out another offer to a Texas running back. Something to take note of considering the last running back from Texas to come north and suit up for the Buckeyes has done pretty well in just one year of play. Seth McGowan, a 6-foot, 210 bruiser of a back announced via his Twitter account last night that Ohio State was his latest offer.

Truly grateful to have received an offer from Ohio State University #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/rKESOe1M8a

— Seth McGowan ™ (@Sjmcg_28) May 17, 2018

The 2020 back is ranked currently as the 30th best player in Texas for his class and is also a top-25 running back for 2020. With offers from the likes of Alabama, Oklahoma, and many more, it’s not out of the picture to think Seth will see his ranking increase, but that may not matter because Ohio State’s offer alone proves this kid can flat out play. An early leader may or may not be in effect, but the Buckeyes being in the picture now and having a proven track record in Texas is worth noting that McGowan may be a name to pay close attention to.

Quick Hits:

  • Ohio State coaches Zach Smith and Ryan Day were in attendance at Lake Travis (Austin, Texas) practice yesterday not only to see current commit Garrett Wilson, but to also see offered QB Hudson Card. It’s looking possible to have Lake Travis as the next pipeline to Ohio State.
  • A crystal ball prediction in favor of the Buckeyes was put in yesterday for Jameson Williams, a four-star receiver prospect out of St. Louis, Missouri. STL has been a major hotbed for the Buckeyes.

LGHL Former Ohio State linebacker Jerome Baker is ready to take his big game prowess to the NFL

Former Ohio State linebacker Jerome Baker is ready to take his big game prowess to the NFL

usa_today_10551844.0.jpg

After being drafted in the third round of last month’s NFL Draft, Baker joins the Miami Dolphins’ linebacking corps.

“Just watch me every game. I just go out there and do what I do. That’s pretty much it for me. There is a lot of talking and all of that, but when it’s time to play, that’s what I do. Just play.”

-Former Ohio State linebacker Jerome Baker via Alain Poupart, Miami Dolphins

Last month, the Miami Dolphins drafted Jerome Baker in the third round of the NFL Draft, making Baker the 15th Ohio State linebacker to be drafted in the past 13 drafts. Baker will now join Raekwon McMillan, who was drafted last year by the Dolphins but missed the season due to injury, in Miami’s linebacking corps.

Baker has been fighting a bit of an uphill battle of late, which means he has even more to prove once he hits the field for the Dolphins. Not only are there questions about Baker’s role because he doesn’t quite possess the prototypical size for an NFL linebacker, but he also left the NFL Combine without showing just how fast he really is.

While to many a 4.53 40-yard dash might be plenty fast, Baker’s time at the NFL Combine wasn’t nearly as good as he had hoped. Despite a slow 40 time, there is no question that Baker has the ability to make big plays. Not only did Baker have a 68-yard interception return for a touchdown in 2016 against Oklahoma, but he hit double digits in tackles in a number of critical games for the Buckeyes the last two seasons.

Just because he is smaller than some of the star linebackers in the NFL, that doesn’t put the nail in Baker’s career. If anything, Baker will be fighting even harder to prove he belongs in the conversation with the elite linebackers in the NFL. If Baker is able to play to the potential that many know he possesses, then Miami got themselves quite a steal in the third round of the NFL Draft.

“We’re still seven months from the Early Signing Period, and potential departures will come into focus as the season progresses — as upperclassmen will excel or find themselves buried on the depth chart. But accepting commitments early on without the guarantee of an open roster spot ultimately depends on how much turnover Meyer and his staff want to deal with.”

-Andrew Lind, Eleven Warriors

Ohio State football was just recently able to get down to the 85 scholarship limit imposed by the NCAA, and next year, the Buckeyes might have even more work to do to reach that number if they keep accepting commitments. With just 10 seniors on the current roster, and nine commitments from the Class of 2019, the Buckeyes are already pressed for space on their roster next season.

The lack of available scholarships starting in 2019 is a problem that could very easily be cleared up, but a problem that wouldn’t be solved until after the Early Signing Day period. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see players like Nick Bosa, Mike Weber, and other juniors head to the NFL following this season, which would open up some scholarships.

Even though Urban Meyer is a master at recruiting, he’ll likely have a little more trouble this year, because he’ll have to tell recruits that while he wants them at Ohio State, he doesn’t exactly know if there will be a scholarship for them because of the roster crunch. In the end, Meyer and his staff will likely get who they want and still hit the 85 scholarship mark, it will just take a little more work this year than in the past.

“You know, men have been coaching men and women forever. So there is no secret. They’re student athletes. They’re people ... It’s just that women have not had the many opportunities that men have had to coach men and women.”

-Ohio State’s director of track and field Karen Dennis via Tim May, The Columbus Dispatch

Ohio State’s track and field program has been tough to slow down lately. Two months ago the Buckeyes won the Big Ten indoor team title, and last week Ohio State won their first outdoor title since 1993. The leader of the program is Karen Dennis, who was named Big Ten Indoor Coach of the Year and Outdoor Coach of the Year. By winning the award, Dennis became the first woman to be named Big Ten coach of the year for a men’s track and field team.

In 2006, athletic director Gene Smith decided to split the men’s and women’s track and field team after the retirement of longtime coach Russ Rogers. Smith already had a long relationship with Dennis and was very familiar with her coaching style. The decision by Smith to promote the assistant coach to head coach of the women’s team was an easy one.

In 2012, men’s coach Robert Gary was let go, and after two years with an interim coach, Smith decided to combine the teams once again, leaving Dennis as the director of the program. The decision has been one of the best Smith has made during his time in Columbus.

The list of accomplishments from Dennis as not only an athlete, but as a coach is incredible, and she is still adding to it — recently named one of six 2018 Ohio State Glass Breakers. What Dennis is doing with the Buckeyes will open the door for even more women in the future to coach men teams. Ohio State’s track and field program is finding success and the reason for it is because of what Dennis brings to the team.

Now, the Buckeyes head to the NCAA Tournament’s Gainesville Regional as an at-large bid

So, the run in the Big Ten Tournament didn’t go exactly according to plan, but the Ohio State softball team still earned an at-large bid for the 2018 NCAA Tournament. Their first matchup of the Gainesville Regional will be on Friday at 5 p.m. ET on ESPNU, when the No. 2-seeded Buckeyes take on No. 3 seed USF.

Before the ladies even take the field on Friday, their 2018 season was one for the record books, with the team finishing the year highly ranked in a host of categories, and several individual records being set that will prove challenging to best in the coming years.

I’d like to call Ohio State’s 2018 season the “Year of the Home Run” thanks to the impressive number of over-the-fence and in-the-park homers by players throughout the lineup — not to mention the GOAT Lilli Piper, who gets my “Golden Bat” award for her 20 home runs (so far) this season.

Let’s take a look at all the accolades and records the softball team earned this season.

“Year of the Home Run”

As a team, and individually, the Buckeyes absolutely crushed the ball this season, connecting on 63 total home runs, good enough for No. 1 in the Big Ten and fifth-best in Ohio State history.

The team has recorded at least one homer in 36 games, as well as claiming four games with three home runs, and two games with five — against Rutgers and Maryland, tying the school record for most home runs in a game.

A big portion of those 63 runs comes down to just three players, Lilli “the GOAT” Piper with 20, Shelby “seriously how does a pitcher hit so well” McCombs with 13, and Emily “don’t count us out just yet” Clark with 12 home runs.

Unstoppable at the plate

It isn’t all home runs for the Buckeyes when they stepped up to the plate, but they have also had success getting on-base and racking up plenty of hits. Five starters hit .270 or better this season, and overall, three Ohio State batters notched double-digit home runs, six players had 16 or more RBI, and four had a .370 or better on-base average.

Nationally, Ohio State ranked No. 6 in homers per game (1.31), No. 14 in doubles per game (1.54), No. 17 in slugging percentage (.492), and No. 36 in scoring (5.48). Not too shabby for a team that bounced in and out of the Top 25 rankings throughout the season.

Aside from Piper (who we’ll get into later on), some of the standout at-bats this season were thanks to RHP Shelby McCombs, Bailee Sturgeon, Niki Carver, and Emily Clark.

  • Aside from being a star in the circle, McCombs finished the season batting .338 with 34 RBI, 13 homers (No. 2 on the team), 11 doubles, 21 runs scored and a .706 slugging percentage. She, deservedly, earned first-team All-Big Ten honors following her impressive 2018 run.
  • Sturgeon is probably the most-improved from the season, having increased her batting average by over 100 points this season, finishing with a .295 mark. She finished the year with 41 hits, nine RBI, four doubles and 27 runs scored.
  • OSU first-year player Niki Carver is setting herself up for a heck of a career as a Buckeye. She finished her rookie season hitting .277, good enough for fourth-best on the team, and had 18 RBI, five home runs and 27 runs scored. Carver’s performance was enough to be named to the Big Ten’s All-Freshman Team.
  • The No. 3 home run hitter on this year’s squad, second baseman Emily Clark, not only notched 12 homers this season, but also recorded 43 RBI, 39 hits, nine doubles and 32 runs scored. Clark also earned second team All-Big Ten honors.

In Ohio State’s series opener against Maryland, the Buckeyes claimed a season-high 13 runs, 13 RBI and 14 hits, and the victory put the team at 30 wins for the year, good for their seventh-consecutive season hitting that feat.

An ode to Lilli Piper

The junior infielder can do it all. She’s a phenom at the plate and an even better person off of the field. As her impressive 2018 campaign draws near its close, she was able to snag her 20th home run of the season in the Buckeyes’ one game in the Big Ten Tournament, and add her name to another set of school and conference records.

Piper’s 20th dinger puts her in the No. 1 spot in Ohio State’s record books with the most home runs in a single-season. She led the league in batting, finishing the season hitting at a .417 clip, and currently leads the team in home runs, hits (63), RBI (57), runs scored (49), doubles (14), stolen bases (8), slugging percentage (.921), and on-base percentage (.497).

So, pretty much every single offensive category belongs to Piper this season. She’s also currently one of only two players in Ohio State history with at least 50 RBI and 40 runs in a season. And, impressively, she reached base in 18 consecutive games this season.

Not only is she the top player for the Buckeyes, and in the Big Ten, but Piper also ranks nationally in several categories including No. 3 in home runs per game (0.42), No. 5 in RBI per game (1.19), No. 6 in home runs (20), No. 9 in slugging percentage (.921), No. 11 in total bases (139), No. 18 in runs per game (1.02), and No. 22 in RBI (57).

Piper is also amazing off the field

Taking all of this into account, it might be a little surprising to learn that early on in the year, Piper went through two traumatic personal events during a series on the West Coast in mid-March. Her efforts on March 16 transcended her from hero on the field, to hero... period.

You really should read the entire story, because it’s absolutely incredible.

During an off-day in-between games, Piper ended up saving the life of her Mom’s boyfriend, Darryl Baldwin, by performing CPR after he collapsed while he and Piper were shooting baskets. In cardiac arrest, the CPR was enough to keep him going until he was eventually picked up and underwent surgery, which was successful.

The next morning, and just hours before game time, as Piper was going to visit Baldwin and celebrate his recovery, she received a call from her Mom relaying the news that her grandfather — and one of her biggest fans — had passed away. Instead of taking the next flight home, she prepared to dedicate this game, and the rest of the series to her devout Buckeye-loving grandpa.

Just hours after breaking down in the arms of her friend and assistant coach, Piper went 4-for-4 at the plate, claiming three RBI and two runs scored, and with her final at-bat in the bottom of the seventh crushing a home run in honor of her grandfather.

"My family is in the stands, but my family is also on the field with me." ❤️@PiperSwiper braved two traumatizing events, then played the series of a lifetime

The team as a whole was solid in 2018

Despite only winning one of their three-games against Michigan to close out the regular season, the Buckeyes not only run-ruled the Wolverines in Ann Arbor in the series finale, but it was the first time TTUN had lost at home by a run rule since 2000.

The 10-1 win, pushed the senior class to 133 total victories over the past four years, including 54 Big Ten conference wins, making them the ninth all-time winningest senior class in Ohio State history.

In addition to the team reaching seven seasons in a row with 30 wins, head coach Kelly Kovach Schoenly reached the milestone for her ninth-straight season (in her 12-year coaching career). In her six seasons leading the Buckeyes, she’s led the team to 197 total wins.

Another reiteration of the CBS Sports Classic will take place in Las Vegas for the 2019 season.

While the 2018 basketball schedule is still getting put together for the Ohio State Buckeyes, they have locked-in another contest—but this time for 2019.

Kentucky, UCLA, North Carolina and OSU are circling the wagons again for another iteration of the CBS Sports Classic. On Dec. 21, 2019, the sixth edition of the Classic will take in Las Vegas, with the Buckeyes getting the Wildcats and the Tar Heels getting the Bruins.

If Las Vegas seemed like a familiar destination for the CBS Sports Classic, you’re right! In 2016, T-Mobile Arena was the home for the December showcase of basketball prowess.

If these matchups are interesting you, and you’re looking for tickets, then you’ll have to wait. Tickets aren’t be sold right now, and will be available at a later date.

Since 2014, the four programs have been part of the first six editions of this early season, meeting of the blue bloods. The difference of the CBS Sports Classic compared to other showcase is that it isn’t in one location. The United Center in Chicago has hosted the event twice, the Barclays Center in Brooklyn has hosted it once, with the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans being the most recent home.

Not many recruiting grades are in for Omeire, but a handful of power programs have already made offers.

It was a pretty eventful Wednesday for the Ohio State Buckeyes. A television time was set for the early season showdown with TCU (8 p.m. ET) and future football schedules saw some additions—and postponement. The Bucks added Buffalo and Akron to the 2020 and 2021 schedules, respectively, while pushing back the home-and-home series with Texas to 2025-26.

While the Texas showdown seems like an eternity away, and the TCU kickoff feels like it’ll take forever to get here, too, there is some good news for Buckeye fans looking for some football news: the recruiting trail is hot for the Scarlet and Gray.

On top of all the scheduling news from Wednesday, an offer was announced to a 2020 prospect.

Speaking of the Lone Star State

Football matchups with Texas programs aren’t the only reason for why the Bucks are making their way into the Lone Star State. Recruits are there, too.

Wednesday brought the announcement that class of 2020 wide receiver Troy Omeire (Sugar Land, TX / Fort Bend Austin) received an offer from the Scarlet and Gray. Omeire made the offer known on Twitter.

Honored to have recieved an offer from Ohio State❗#GoBucks pic.twitter.com/PnyiTYWZ4P

— t.o (@TroyOmeire) May 16, 2018

A 6-foot-3.5 wideout, Omeire already has a bundle of offers. According to 247sports, he has 11 already from the likes of Georgia, Texas, Texas A&M and Ole Miss. Just this month, he’s received three offers; one of those came from the Buckeyes, while the other two came from the Rebels and Boston College.

While a full composite score isn’t out yet for Omeire, 247sports has graded him already. With still a couple years to improve, the Sugar Land product comes in as an early four-star recruit and is the 132nd overall prospect in his class. At the WR position he’s seen as the 26th best; inside the state of Texas, he comes in as the 16th best prospect.

From a stats standpoint, he had a somewhat productive 2017 campaign on the gridiron. He hauled in 39 receptions for 742 yards and eight touchdowns. Here are some of his highlights, courtesy of a video posted to Hudl.

As mentioned, power programs have already taken notice at what Omeire can do. But who’s the early favorite to land this Texas college-star-to-be? Unsurprisingly, it’s a Texas school. Even though there is only one crystal ball prediction in for the Fort Bend Austin attendee, it’s for the Aggies of Texas A&M. The prediction came in on April 21—about one week after Omeire made an unofficial visit to College Station.

There is still plenty of time for the Buckeyes to really jump into the game for Omeire. Over the next two seasons, there will be a mass exodus of talent leaving Ohio State at the receiving position, so they’ll need to find the next great pass catchers. Garrett Wilson was the big get in the 2019 class at the receiving position, but the Bucks will need more than one star wideout down the line.

A prediction in for Smith

Omeire still has plenty of time before he needs to make a decision. Five-star inside linebacker Brandon Smith (Mineral, VA / Louisa County) on the other hand, doesn’t have a lot of time left before he makes his verbal commitment known.

Smith’s commitment announcement was talked about yesterday in the recruiting round up, but on Wednesday, three crystal ball prediction were submitted—and all of them are not good news if you wanted to see Smith in the Scarlet and Gray.

All three votes casted in the 247sports crystal ball pointed to Penn State being the school that Smith will pick at 5 p.m. ET on May 21. The trio of crystal ball predictions on Wednesday go along with the trio of votes casted on Tuesday: they are all for James Franklin’s program securing the five-star product’s verbal pledge.

A member of the 2019 class, Smith is considered the 30th best prospect, second best ILB and top player in Virginia.
