Between getting zero hits and giving up 11 walks, it wasn’t in the cards for the Buckeyes last night.

Though the dominating 1-2 punch of Florida Gator pitchers Kelly Barnhill and Aleshia Ocasio certainly stymied the OSU offense over the weekend, the most startling aspect of the Buckeyes’ two defeats at the hands of the No. 2 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament was the combined 26 walks, including 22 from senior pitcher Shelby McCombs.

In Sunday’s deciding game, which was postponed due to rain for more than seven hours, the Buckeye bats never got going, as Florida senior Ocasio— who plays centerfield when not in the circle— threw the program’s first seven-inning, postseason no-hitter en route to a 4-0 UF victory.

Ocasio recorded a season-high 12 strikeouts, while keeping the sticks of Ohio State’s Lilli Piper, Emily Clark, and Ashley Goodwin in-check. In fairness, McCombs also limited the hits for the Gators, allowing only two hits— a double for Amanda Lorenz and a Jaimie Hoover-triple on a misplayed flyball to right field.

However, as in the teams’ matchup on Saturday, she couldn’t overcome the free passes issued and extra baserunners afforded to the Gators. McCombs struck out four, but the 11 bases on balls proved to add too much pressure, as the Buckeyes weren’t able to keep the game close enough for a late-inning comeback. The run that would become the game winner came in the top of the first inning via a bases-loaded walk.

OSU did get a pair of runners on during the bottom of the seventh, but weren’t able to punch a run across.

With the loss, OSU’s season ends, as does that for the Big Ten conference. No B1G program advanced to this week’s Super Regionals. In fact, all of the 16 seeded teams (none from the B1G) won their regional rounds, as no underdogs were able to pull the upset. Florida will next host No. 15 Texas A&M beginning on Thursday.

Congratulations to the OSU softball team on their season.

Two of the top junior prospects in the country locked in scholarships from the Buckeyes over the weekend.

While you were spending time with family and friends over the weekend, did you miss out on your Ohio State recruiting fix?

If so, don’t worry. Land-Grant Holy Land is here. Sit back and get caught up with some of the latest news from the recruiting trail.

Buckeyes dish out new offers

Just like nearly every other day last week, the Buckeyes coaching staff reportedly handed out a couple scholarship offers on Friday.

Kicking the weekend off in style, Ohio State dished out offers to a pair of most sought after recruits from the class of 2020.

4-star ATH Reggie Grimes

5-star LB to commit today

Later today one of the top prospects in the entire class of 2019 will let the world know where he will play his college football.

While his commitment would sky rocket their 2019 recruiting class up the rankings, Ohio State will probably have to look elsewhere for another linebacker to join Lexington’s Cade Stover in this year’s haul of future Buckeyes.

More than likely ending up in the Big Ten Conference, five-star inside linebacker and Virginia native Brandon Smith looks to be down to Ohio State, and Penn State, who most believe he’ll end up choosing this evening.

A monster on the field, Smith, the second inside linebacker and 30th overall prospect in the class of 2019, according to the 247Sports Composite, has backed his accolades. Helping Louisa County High to an overall record of 14-1, the 6-foot-4, 223-pound senior accounted for 117 total tackles and six quarterback sacks as a junior for the Lions.

Will OSU steal one away from a Big Ten Conference foe? We won’t have to wait much longer to find out. Stick with Land-Grant Holy Land for the latest.

2019 SF names leaders, announcement date

Similar to the football program, Chris Holtmann’s basketball Buckeyes find themselves in the same predicament as Urban Meyer’s squad.

In the hunt for a commitment, Holtmann’s crew will likely miss out on one of their 2019 targets this week to another school in the Big Ten Conference.

Announcing a top five of OSU, Michigan State, Michigan, Oregon, and DePaul on Saturday, four-star power forward Romeo Weems will shut down his recruitment on Tuesday with all signs currently pointing towards Tom Izzo and the Spartans keeping him close to his New Haven, Mich., home.

Final 5 Decision coming Tuesday May 22 pic.twitter.com/j4RhE7A4T9

— Romeo Weems (@romeo_weems_0) May 19, 2018

Holding a commitment from Garfield Heights forward Alonzo Gaffney at the moment, if Weems, who averaged 23 points and 10 rebounds last season, does end up in East Lansing, the Buckeyes will shift their attention fully to forward recruits such as Wendell Moore, Drew Timme, and others.

Quick Hits

  • According to Gerry Hamilton of ESPN, class of 2020 outside linebacker Mekhail Sherman of St. John’s College High in Washington, DC will visit Ohio State on June 16. Ohio State, Auburn, Clemson, Florida and Michigan are just a few of the over 20 college programs to offer the soon-to-be-junior standout a scholarship.
  • Recent Ohio State offeree Dominic Bass, a 2021 defensive tackle from Phillips Academy in Chicago, is “excited” over his scholarship from the Buckeyes, per Bill Kurelic of Bucknuts.

The Buckeyes will face No. 2 Purdue on Wednesday.

Following the conclusion of the Big Ten regular season schedule on Saturday, the conference released the eight-team bracket for this week’s conference tournament. After losing two of three against the Michigan State Spartans over the weekend, Ohio State is slotted into the seventh-seed, and will face No. 2 Purdue on Wednesday at 1 p.m. CT from TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Neb.

Big Ten Conference

The way that the B1G tournament works is a little usual, as the eight teams are broken up into two brackets, with the champs of each four-team, double-elimination pod meeting in a winner-take-all title game on Sunday, May 27. The tournament champion will receive the conference’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.

Last weekend in Columbus, the Buckeyes took two of three from their first round opponent Boilermakers. However, in early April, OSU dropped two of three against the No. 6 Hawkeyes, whom they could end up facing. Ohio State did not play No. 3 Michigan during the regular season this year.

We will have much more coverage of the B1G baseball tournament throughout the week here at Land-Grant Holy Land.

The Buckeyes blew a lead against the Gators on Saturday, and must beat them twice on Sunday to advance.

It was an up-and-down Saturday for the Ohio State softball team which saw them give up a late-game lead against No. 2 Florida in perhaps the most painful way possible, only to fall behind immediately in an elimination rematch against USF. Fortunately for the Buckeyes, they were able to bounce back and get the win against the Bulls to move into the Gainesville regional finals on Sunday.

In their third-straight NCAA Tournament, the Buckeyes were bracketed with USF, No. 2 Florida, and Bethune-Cookman in the double-elimination region. After defeating the USF Bulls, 3-1, on Friday night, OSU faced the host Gators on Saturday, with the loser of that game taking on to face the winner of the USF vs. Bethune-Cookman contest.

Thanks to besting the Bulls in Saturday’s nightcap, the Buckeyes will have a chance to avenge their Saturday meltdown against the Gators on Sunday. However, since UF is 2-0 in this double-elimination round-robin, the Buckeyes must beat the Gators twice to advance to a best-of-three series in the super regionals.

What happened on Saturday?

OSU 2, UF 10 | Six innings

The tale of Saturday’s first game can be told in one statistic: bases-on-balls. Ohio State pitching gave up a combined 15 walks against Florida in the day’s opener. What makes it worse is that UF— the second-ranked team in the country— doesn’t exactly need any help in the offensive department.

However, despite giving up 11 of the free passes herself, Buckeye starting pitcher Shelby McCombs actually maintained a scoreless tie through four innings of work, and her offense staked her to a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth, Buckeye designated player Ashley Goodwin got OSU on the board with a solo home run; her 10th of the season. Then in the fifth, Lilli Piper drove in Becca Gavin to spot McCombs a two-run lead.

— NCAA Softball (@NCAAsoftball) May 19, 2018

However, in the bottom of the inning, a pair of walks and a Piper error loaded the bases with one out. Jaimie Hoover drove in the first run for UF, and after a fielder’s choice stopped a run at the plate, Amanda Lorenz drove the ball into right field, giving the Gators a lead that they would never relinquish.

— NCAA Softball (@NCAAsoftball) May 19, 2018

In fact, the home team ran off 10-straight runs to end the game in the sixth due to a run-rule. Certainly not what Buckeye coach Kelly Kovach Schoenly would have wanted from a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the fifth.

OSU 3, USF 2

After the demoralizing defeat in the first game of the day, the Buckeyes had to turn around and get back up for a rematch with USF, who had beaten Bethune-Cookman 3-0 to end the Wildcats’ season.

In the day’s nightcap, USF’s Brooke Hartman drove in Lindsey Devitt in the top of the first, and Amber Atkinson scored in the second on a passed ball, giving the Bulls a 2-0 lead (although replay called into question the accuracy of the umpire’s call on the bang-bang play).

However, from there, the scoring was all Buckeyes, as OSU exploded for three runs in the third. Taylor White led off with a single, and was followed up by a Bailee Sturgeon hit. Next, Piper reached on an error that also allowed White to score.

After a pop out, and then a stolen base for Piper, McCombs singled to bring in Sturgeon and move Piper to third, who then got home on a Goodwin sacrifice bunt.

That would be all of the scoring that the game would see, as Morgan Ray would go the distance in the circle for the Buckeyes, striking out five, walking one, and giving up a lone earned run.

What’s on tap for Sunday?

Having already lost a game, the Buckeyes will have the unenviable task of needing to knock off the second-ranked team in the country... twice... at home, in order to keep their season alive.

The first game will be at noon ET, and should Ohio State force the “if necessary” game, that will happen almost immediately thereafter, with the game time tentatively set for 2:30 p.m. ET.

The winner of the OSU-UF matchup will advance to the Super Regionals next weekend, where they will face the winner of the No. 15 Texas A&M vs. Baylor regional final. The Aggies have the advantage of being undefeated, as Baylor lost the regional’s opening game against McNeese State, 11-10.
