Plus, updates on the $40 million Schumaker Complex and NCAA results for Buckeye rowing and track and field.

“Elsewhere in the Big Ten, Ohio State’s a narrow favorite to beat Penn State in Happy Valley.”

-Alex Kirshner, SB Nation

So, even before training camp officially begins for college football programs throughout the country, the odds for games next season are starting to make their way to the internet. Admittedly, I think it’s way too early to be thinking about Ohio State opening as 9-point favorite over Michigan, when a lot can happen in the weeks leading up to the final regular season game of the year — even if I love being projected to beat TTUN by more than a touchdown.

Some other betting lines to come out include Ohio State at -12 over TCU, -6 over Michigan State, and a narrow -1.5 over Penn State. Vegas having faith in the Buckeyes is nothing new, but they also have Michigan (-3.5) over Penn State, and Michigan State (-1) over Michigan.

So, while it’s a little too early to know if any of these lines even make sense, it’s seems safe to say that the competition at the top of the Big Ten East could get very interesting as the season progresses. Ohio State will go into fall with a firmly entrenched starting QB, now that Joe Burrow made his decision to transfer, but still have a long way to go before the still fairly-green Dwayne Haskins is ready to carry the team on his shoulders.

The new Schumaker Student-Athlete Development Complex is expected to open on October 25, 2018 and will be connected to the Woody Hayes Athletic Center off of Olentangy River Road. Ohio State demolished the Biggs facility in order to build a bigger, centralized location for several Buckeye programs.

The facility will be the new home for seven sports: Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse, Softball, Rowing and Field Hockey.

The new SSADC (Is this what we’re going to call it? Or maybe just The Schumaker?) will feature training facilities, strength and conditioning rooms — which are all windowed, allowing the athletes to take in the fields around them while they hit the weights —, lockers rooms, and lounges.

Speaking of the Rowing team...

Heading into the NCAA Championship weekend, the Buckeyes were ranked No. 3 in the CRCA/US Rowing Coaches poll with 422 points, behind Washington and California with 499 and 456 points, respectively.

For the First Varsity Eight event on Friday, the Buckeyes were ranked No. 5 and were set to compete in Heat 4 against UCF, Wisconsin, Texas, Brown and Rhode Island. Ohio State ended up finishing No. 2, clocking a 6:27.62 finish behind Texas, and earning a automatic spot in the 1V8 A/B Semi-Finals on Saturday morning.

The first heat for the Buckeyes in the IIV8 didn’t quite go as well as the rest of the morning races, with Ohio State finishing third (6:37.54) against the likes of Michigan, UCF, Yale, Brown, and Navy, forcing them to wait until late-afternoon for their last chance to qualify for a spot in the Semi-Finals, Friday evening at 6:26 p.m. ET.

In the Fours race, the Buckeyes were the No. 1 seed in Heat 3, and were lined up against Navy, Indiana, Yale, Iowa, and Jacksonville. The Buckeyes started off holding the third place spot for the first 500m of the race — behind Iowa and Yale —, but Ohio State quickly pulled ahead and finished the heat in first place (7:15.87). Once the Buckeyes made their move, they didn’t slow down, and continued being a “freight train” (as described by the event’s announcer) through the finish.

With an automatic bid to the Varsity Four A/B Semi-Finals on Saturday, the Buckeyes have an opportunity to add some points to the overall team score as well.

“The Ohio State track & field team got down to business on the first day of the NCAA East Preliminaries on Thursday held at the USF Track & Field Stadium in Tampa, Fla.”

-Ohio State Athletics

Yesterday was the first day for the Buckeye men’s and women’s track and field athletes to attempt to earn spots in the NCAA Outdoor Championships. On Thursday, three Buckeyes earned tickets to Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon for the title run; Cole Gorski (pole vault), Zack Bazile (long jump), and Christine Frederick (10,000m).

After Thursday’s initial races and events, several more Buckeyes qualified to compete in the regional finals throughout the remainder of the weekend. Bazile will be going to the Championships regardless, but he did not qualify on Friday in the men’s 100 meter event.

Friday saw a host of first round runs and regional final events, with another Buckeye, senior Maggie Barrie (400m), punching her ticket to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, and four more Ohio State athletes qualifying for the regional final in their respective events on Saturday.

TICKET PUNCHED! Maggie Barrie places second in the first heat of the 400m dash at 51.74 to qualify for NCAA Outdoor Championships! #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/Puju2dLoee

— Ohio State T&F/XC (@OhioState_TFXC) May 25, 2018

Tomorrow, looking to advance to the NCAA Championships, will be Chantel Ray (110m hurdles) and Avania Battle (200m), along with two Buckeyes advancing in the men’s 200 meter event, Eric Harrison Jr. and Nick Gray. Harrison set a personal best in his qualifying run of 20.27, and Gray ran a season-best 20.51, on his way to the finals.

So far, Ohio State has four athletes for sure heading to Eugene, Oregon for the NCAA Outdoor Championships, but there are plenty more that have the opportunity to join them with solid finishes in their respective regional finals over the weekend.

Here’s a LINK to the live results.

If you haven’t heard yet — ad nauseam —, Ohio State has a reputation as DBU, and with first-round draft picks year-after-year, it should be no surprise that the secondary, along with the Buckeye defense, is often the best in the country. This has been particularly true under Urban Meyer, and the video above illustrates exactly why that is.

The Ohio State defense isn’t just focused on stopping other teams, but also in capitalizing on any scoring opportunities they might get as well. There’s a good group of guys looking to continue that tradition in the 2018 season, with Kendall Sheffield emerging as the new leader in the secondary, and ready to work with Damon Arnette and Jordan Fuller to continue the now-legendary reputation of their position group.

Zach Boren spoke to this year’s group of Buckeyes about that so, so special team that went undefeated season.

ALL. THE. FEELS.

Urban Meyer tweeted out a video on Friday showing former Ohio State football player Zach Boren speaking to the team about the commitment that he and his teammates had to the university, and to each other, heading into the 2012 season.

That year’s team featured an incredible number of Buckeye legends — many of which are featured in the video —, and in Meyer’s inaugural season as head coach of Ohio State, the team went undefeated for the sixth time in program history, beat TTUN, and did it all while unable to compete in the postseason due to NCAA sanctions. Yet, they played for their school and their brothers.

Thank you @ZBoren44 for sharing your story to the 2018 Buckeyes for our 1st R Factor leadership meeting. No better example of group of players coming together to “Get Your Mind Right” & commit to The Ohio State than the Undefeated 2012 Buckeyes! @TimothyKight E+R=O at its finest! pic.twitter.com/ZfSQFGagcS

— Urban Meyer (@OSUCoachMeyer) May 25, 2018

Reliving that 2012 season is absolutely incredible! From Kenny Guiton coming in to lead the team to an overtime win against Purdue, to Urban Meyer’s first win — of many — over Michigan, it was truly the beginning of a new era at Ohio State and in the Big Ten.

Hearing from alumni like Ryan Shazier, Jack Mewhort, and John Simon reaffirms how special that team was. It’s still a bit like a knife in heart that the Buckeyes couldn’t finish what they started by competing for a Big Ten and National Championship, but all the players who chose to stay at Ohio State for the 2012 season definitely went out on top.

Zach Harrison sets his official visit dates for OSU and a bitter rival.

Yesterday marked 100 days until the Ohio State Buckeyes are back on the gridiron kicking off against the other OSU, Oregon State. The staff is always working tirelessly to land the next top batch of recruits to suit up for the Buckeyes. While the 2019 class is expecting some “booms” in the weeks to come, the class has potential to be one of the nation’s best if things go according to plan. In the coming months, the staff will be doing what they can to land the No. 1 class in the country—while also getting ready for a playoff caliber season.

C’mon Harrison, give us the good news

Maybe you’re tired of hearing about the same type of description, but truly, there may not be another player in the tenure of Urban Meyer at Ohio State that is more of a “must get” prospect than in-state stud Zach Harrison. Everyone knows what the top ranking Harrison possesses; whether it’s his insanely fast track times, his pure size, or his highlight film, the Buckeyes (and everyone else in the country) want Zach Harrison in their 2019 class. A true game changer at 6-foot-6, 245 pounds, Harrison’s abilities give reason to believe the sky is the limit for his potential. Being just minutes away from campus his whole life though, that has this Ohio State staff knowing this class isn’t a true success unless they get their top guy and Ohio’s best.

A quiet prospect on the recruiting front, Harrison keeps it pretty close to hush. Not one for the limelight, it’s been said that Harrison truly doesn’t really like the recruiting process and when he has his mind made up on the school of his choice, he will then and there end the recruitment and focus on playing. Until then, the waiting game continues. A decision though, may not be all that far off.

Yesterday, Zach announced his official visit plans for the remaining schools that are thought to be in this battle to land his incredible services. After already seeing Penn State officially, Ohio State and Michigan are the remaining two that will see the visits. However, it’s rumored that Clemson could receive a visit, too. To get back on track, the important question is which of the two schools will receive the last official visit. As we’ve seen time and time again in the recruiting process with several top stars, the last visit is usually the visit for the school who not only leads in the recruitment, but also the visit that leaves the best impression considering it’s the one with the most momentum and recent memory.

For the Buckeyes, good news was announces as Zach is set to visit Michigan on June 21 and then head home to see his backyard Buckeyes on June 23. With not much time in between the visits, it’s looking clear that Harrison is ready to get this decision either made or pretty close to finalized before he announces publicly. If the Buckeyes trend continues, their red carpet affair for their top prospect will hopefully keep this five-star at home. In the end, the distance, relationship with his mother, proximity to campus, and the chance to compete at a top program ensures life after football will be a success.

With those keys in Zach’s hand, there’s reason for believing that, in the end, he will decide to stay home. On Aug. 14, Harrison’s birthday, or shortly after, we may know.

Quick Hits:

  • 2020 quarterback Jack Miller, the No. 5 ranked pro-style signal caller of Arizona will be back to visit Ohio State late June. The plan is to show Miller’s mother Ohio State since she has yet to see campus. Miller is thought to be a Buckeye lean and this visit could easily have both parties continuing to build a strong relationship and push for Jack to be the leader of the 2020 class.

After a disappointing 2017 season, Ohio State running back Mike Weber has high expectations for 2018

The running back is hoping a healthier junior campaign will lead to more carries and help him crack the 1,300-yard goal he has set for himself.

“It’s really exciting. It’s the moment I’ve been waiting for since I got here, to put the team on my back in a game and just be the workhorse. That’s one of my goals. I asked for it, and hopefully I get it this year and I’ll show people what I can do.”

Ohio State running back Mike Weber via Tony Gerdeman, The Ozone

After a freshman season in which cracked the 1,000-yard barrier, Mike Weber’s sophomore season left plenty to be desired. The season started with a hamstring injury, which led to freshman J.K. Dobbins become Ohio State’s primary running back. Even when Weber was healthy, he saw a limited workload, as he was splitting carries with Dobbins and quarterback J.T. Barrett.

Despite only getting 96 carries in 2017, Weber did make some noise with his big-play ability. Weber had three carries of at least 40 yards in November, and only two other running backs in the country had more carries of at least 40 yards during the month. The stat is even more impressive considering Weber only received 37 carries in November, while the other two running backs had at least 29 more carries than Weber.

There was plenty of speculation that Weber might be headed to the NFL after the 2017 season, but he decided to return for his junior season. Weber not only wants to help Ohio State win another Big Ten title, but he also wants to be a part of a national championship team. The running back also has some personal goals which brought him back to Columbus for another year, as he is hoping to rush for at least 1,300 yards and 15 touchdowns.

At first the goals might seem a little lofty for Weber, but they might be a little easier to be attained than some might think. At least this year Weber shouldn’t see his quarterback eat up so many carries, as there likely won’t be as much of an emphasis on the quarterback running the football now that J.T. Barrett has exhausted his eligibility. Also, if Weber is able to stay healthy throughout the season, he could rack up even more big runs which will help his totals.

Weber wouldn’t have returned to Ohio State if he thought he was going to be an afterthought in the Ohio State offense this year. With a new starting quarterback, the Buckeyes need the veteran leadership in the backfield from a guy like Mike Weber, and they’ll likely show their appreciation for the junior returning for another season by giving him the carries and workload that he craves.

“He’s really smart, tough, willing to do anything it takes to win and he slings the ball. He can throw the ball around the yard.”

Former Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett on Joe Burrow via Josh Katzenstein, The Times-Picayune

If there was ever anyone who could give LSU fans a bit of an insight into new quarterback Joe Burrow, it would be J.T. Barrett. Now with the New Orleans Saints, Barrett was asked about Burrow at the annual crawfish boil for Saints rookies, and Barrett had a glowing evaluation about the Ohio State transfer.

Barrett spent three years with Burrow at Ohio State, with Burrow redshirting in 2015, serving as Barrett’s backup in 2016, and sitting third on Ohio State’s quarterback depth chart in 2017 after suffering an injury. Even though Burrow didn’t see much time on the field for the Buckeyes, he was impressive in the few snaps he was able to get in mop-up duty.

If Burrow is able to take control of LSU’s starting quarterback position early, the Tigers could be a threat in the SEC this year. In recent years, LSU has had a strong running game but their offense was hampered by not having much of a passing game to lean on. Burrow could change that, as his intelligence and passing ability could give the Tigers a passing threat that could keep opposing defenses on their toes.

“Last year, I was burned out after a long season that I just wasn’t there mentally. This year I know for a fact the chance isn’t going to come again, so I’m going to do my absolute best.”

Ohio State men’s tennis player Mikael Torpegaard via Bill Rabinowitz, The Columbus Dispatch

Ohio State men’s tennis player Mikael Torpegaard is hoping he has saved his best for last. In his final act with the Buckeyes, Torpegaard is trying to take home an NCAA singles title. Two years ago, Torpegaard reach the finals, but wasn’t able to win the title. Last year Torpegaard entered the tournament as the top seed, but fell to the eventual champion in the third round.

After being a part of the Ohio State team that finished runner-up in the NCAA team tournament earlier this week, Torpegaard quickly had to turn his attention the singles tournament. Torpegaard is already one step closer to the final after beating Arizona State’s Michael Geerts in the first round on Wednesday.

Torpegaard’s final season with the Buckeyes didn’t have quite the shine that last year’s season did, but the Denmark product had to deal with knee tendinitis and plantar fasciitis. Also, Torpegaard has his eyes on the bigger picture, with a lot of the work he has put in being designed to help him succeed at the professional level. Even if he isn’t able to bring home an NCAA title, Torpegaard will still be remembered as one of the best tennis players to suit up for Ohio State in quite some time.
