The Buckeyes are having some quarterback issues in 2019. What could that mean for the future?

Quarterback is a hot topic in recruiting every year. It’s the most important position on the football field, and every team in the country needs one. That means that recruiting quarterbacks is a high pressure, extremely important position for every school, especially those at the top of the college football world.

Ohio State has been one of the best schools in the nation at recruiting quarterbacks for more than a decade. With players like Terrelle Pryor, Braxton Miller, Cardale Jones, JT Barrett, and now Dwayne Haskins running the helm, the Buckeye have been in good hands for a very long time, and that comes from recruiting.

While there have been a few misses along the way, Ohio State has generally been extremely good at recruiting QBs. That past success is what makes the class of 2019’s quarterback class so frustrating. The Buckeyes are without a quarterback commit in this class to this point, and while that’s not a huge deal yet, it will become more glaring as the summer passes by.

It’s important to have a quarterback locked up to lead your class, and the closer a team gets to signing day without one, the less likely they are to land a quality one. As each day passes, that’s becoming more of an issue for the Buckeyes. For months, Ohio State’s quarterback plan has been pretty obvious. Texas signal caller Grant Gunnell is the top target, and would ultimately be the guy.

That may not be the case anymore. Now, that doesn’t mean Ohio State has lost interest in the St. Pius X product, but there have been some questions in the recruitment. Those questions come mostly from Gunnell’s side, and center around the transfer of Joe Burrow. Gunnell doesn’t want to suffer a similar fate, so he’s taken a step back to reassess his recruitment. This happens a lot in recruiting, and doesn’t really mean anything.

At least it doesn’t in most recruitments. This isn’t most recruitments though. Gunnell is a very specific, rare circumstance. The best way to explain it concisely is that Gunnell was committed to a coaching staff, that staff was fired, and now they’re at another power five school, near his hometown. That doesn’t happen a ton, and it makes for a pretty obvious advantage for that school, which is in this case, Arizona, and their new head coach, Kevin Sumlin.

Arizona has a ton of momentum right now. That doesn’t mean that Ohio State is out of the recruitment, but they’re not where they want to be. Gunnell will likely commit in June, and at this point, that announcement will not yield good news for the Buckeyes. There’s still time, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Ohio State doesn’t start looking at other options soon. What do those options look like?

Dwan Mathis

I’m going to preface this by saying that this option is way more likely than the other 2019 option. Mathis, unlike the other player I’m going to talk about, actually has an Ohio State offer, and has been talking to Ohio State consistently. Ryan Day really likes Dwan’s game, and recently offered him after visiting his high school.

Mathis, ranked 11th among pro style quarterback, has been committed to Michigan State since September, but if Ohio State pushes, the Belleville, Mich., quarterback would be very receptive. This is Plan B if Gunnell falls through, and I imagine Ohio State will be in contact with Mathis quite a bit over the next few weeks. If they can get him on campus, he may be the pick at quarterback for this class.

Connor Bazelak

Every year, there’s an Ohio product that Buckeye fans champion as being the best option for leading Ohio State to the promised land. It rarely works, and players like this rarely pick up offers. We saw it with Brennan Armstrong in 2018, Danny Clark in 2017, Messiah deWeaver in 2016, and even Joe Burrow in 2015, in a round-a-bout way. It’s a common trend with Ohio State, so it’s no surprise that we’re seeing it again in this class.

Dayton’s Connor Bazelak, a 6-foot-3 pocket passer is ranked 22nd among pro style quarterbacks, and holds offers from Georgia, and pretty much every second tier (think Missouri, West Virginia, NC State, Pitt, Kentucky, etc...) school in the country. He’s a talented player. I don’t think he’s Ohio State caliber, and there’s a reason they haven’t offered him yet. If they don’t have a quarterback come signing day, and they need one in 2019, it’ll probably be Bazelak. I don’t think it’ll get to that point.

Punt

Punting is the option we all know and love, and when it comes to quarterbacks in 2019 if the Buckeyes miss on Gunnell, it may the be the best choice. This is a historically weak quarterback class, and if Ohio State doesn’t love any prospects other than Gunnell, there’s no reason to take one that’ll never play in Columbus. That means that we could see the 2019 class finish with no quarterbacks in it, which would be disastrous for depth, especially if Dwayne Haskins leaves after this year, but good for quality at the position.

The reason that this might be the best choice is that the class of 2020 has significantly more talent at quarterback, and quite a few of the top gunslingers are interested in Ohio State. The Buckeyes lead for Arizona four-star Jack Miller, and are in the running for the best quarterback in the country, California’s DJ Uiagalelei. If Ohio State is worried about depth so much, but wants to wait for 2020, they could even consider taking two QBs in the class.

Pickerington’s own Demeatric Crenshaw, is a three-star, dual-threat prospect, and while he’s more of a project, he’s probably my favorite QB in the class. If Ohio State wants two, Crenshaw and Miller would make a lot of sense. However, we really have no clue what Ohio State wants right now. All we know is that if they miss on Grant Gunnell, they certainly have options.

The Buckeyes had the most captains they’ve ever had last season.

Parris Campbell, a fifth-year senior, is an obvious choice to retain his captaincy from last season. He’s one of the most productive Buckeyes on the offensive side of the ball and also a leader in the locker room.”

- Ryan Ginn, Land of 10

The captains at Ohio State have always been a pretty big deal. After all, it’s a great honor to be selected as a captain for a team with as much history as any other in the country. The Buckeyes last season had their most ever captains on a team, with nine total captains. J.T. Barrett, Parris Campbell, Terry McLaurin, Jalyn Holmes, Sam Hubbard, Tyquan Lewis, Billy Price, Tracy Sprinkle, and Chris Worley made the cut last season for the honors. Only Campbell and McLaurin return from those nine, and are certainly favorites to be included in the captains group again this season.

As for other candidates, Ryan Ginn of Land of 10 broke down the roster and who would make the most sense as captain. He has Dwayne Haskins a little lower than I would have expected considering the starting quarterback for the team is generally always a captain. It will be interesting to see if Meyer goes with as many captains as he did last season or if he cuts it down. Based off his early spring comments, not a lot of players have truly gone above and beyond in the leadership role, so it’s something to keep an eye on in the future as the decisions get made.

“With that being said, I think that as long as both running backs stay healthy, it’s more likely than not that each will run for 1,000 yards.”

- Ryan Ginn, Land of 10

There is no questioning that Ohio State might have the most talented running back duo in college football entering the 2018 season. J.K. Dobbins is returning after a sensational 1,000-yard season as a true freshman and Mike Weber is looking to pick up where he left off last season after returning from injury midway through the year. A talented tandem in the backfield like that can be dangerous for opponents as was evident last season, when the Georgia Bulldogs rode the legs of Nick Chubb and Sony Michel all the way to the national championship game where they barely lost to Alabama.

Whether or not Dobbins and Weber can live up to that sort of production remains to be seen, but they showed flashes last season of being able to play off each other, not being too worried about getting a rhythm within the offense. With the Buckeyes rolling with Dwayne Haskins at quarterback, that should open things up for the running backs since Haskins isn’t going to be needing the ball in his hands to run and take carries away from Dobbins and Weber.

“She [Carmen Grande] leaves Ball State with 697 assists and finished near the top of the country with 9.2 assists per game in 2017-18 for a Ball State team that went 25-7 and made the second round of the WNIT.”

- Andrew Erikson, The Columbus Dispatch

Chris Holtmann isn’t the only one convincing talented players at other programs to come to Columbus and play basketball. Ohio State women’s basketball head coach Kevin McGuff landed a commitment and transfer from former Ball State’s Carmen Grande (what a great name for a Buckeye). Grande was one of the top players in assists last season and helped guide Ball State to a solid record. Now she’ll try her luck with the Buckeyes.

Grande is also the third graduate transfer in recent weeks to commit to playing for Ohio State in the upcoming season. LaSalle’s Adreana Miller and Cleveland State’s Ashanti Abshaw also join the ranks under McGuff. The Buckeyes were bounced out of the NCAA tournament last season in the second round to Central Michigan, a surprise upset.

Ohio State receives two crystal ball predictions for two of the country’s top prospects.

Urban Meyer and the Ohio State football program rarely take a break from recruiting. But when they do, it is well deserved and for good reason. Yesterday, the Buckeyes’ coaching staff chose to honor those who gave their lives for this great country while spending time with their families. Something that is much more important than recruiting.

We cannot begin to express our gratitude for those brave men and women who gave their lives for this great country. You and your families are the true heroes in this world! Your loved ones will not be forgotten on this Memorial Day or any day. Thank you. pic.twitter.com/suIo7ttPTq

— Urban Meyer (@OSUCoachMeyer) May 28, 2018
Top recruits trending towards Ohio State

While Urban Meyer and the Ohio State football program were spending time with their families on Memorial Day, the school still found a way to make moves in the recruiting world.

Ohio State found itself trending towards two of the country’s top recruits in the 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions. While these predictions are far from being a certainty, they do provide a glimpse into which direction recruits are leaning towards. Therefore, it is always good news when a 247Sports Recruiting Expert has the confidence to select Ohio State as the prediction for a top recruit.

#PennState receiving numerous #CrystalBall predictions this weekend, including for a few 4-star prospects https://t.co/AD4fYwo42q pic.twitter.com/IfXHiamANq

— 247SportsCrystalBall (@247CrystalBall) May 28, 2018

While the above Tweet certainly portrays good news for Big Ten foe Penn State, it also shows Ohio State is trending in the right direction for five-star offensive tackle Devontae Dobbs (Belleville, MI / Belleville) and for three-star OT Jonathan Allen (Dayton, OH / Dunbar).

The more prominent of the two above recruits is Dobbs who ranks as the No. 3 OT in the 2019 recruiting class and is the No. 10 overall recruit despite position.

Dobbs has long been predicted to play for one of the two in-state schools in Michigan or Michigan State. Therefore, it was surprising when Dobbs excluded Michigan from his top schools list released this past weekend.

While this exclusion seemingly places Michigan State as the front runner to land Dobbs, it also opens the door for Ohio State.

Dobbs does have two official visits set for USC and for Auburn, getting Dobbs to take an official visit to Columbus would seem imperative if the Buckeyes are viewed to be true contenders. If they are unable to land a commitment from Dobbs, at the very least it is a good sign when top recruits respect the program enough to place it in their list of top schools.

However, the Buckeyes are looking to add at least on more offensive tackle to this class to go alongside four-stars Doug Nester and Ryan Jacoby. If they are unable to land Dobbs, the aforementioned Allen would be a solid pickup.

Meyer has indicated he wants to put more focus on signing in-state talents and Allen would be just that. And while his recruiting rankings may appear too low for Ohio State’s standards, Allen has gathered an impressive offer sheet including the likes of Michigan State, Penn State, Wisconsin, Iowa, Cincinnati, Kentucky, etc.

Currently, Ohio State is the runaway favorite to land a pledge from Allen, holding 100-percent of the 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions with another one coming in yesterday.
