After getting limited minutes in his freshman year with the Buckeyes, Musa Jallow is looking for a bigger role this season.

“Definitely this year I want to be more consistent. I want to be able to produce on a consistent basis and have something I can hang my hat on for every single game.”

-Ohio State guard Musa Jallow via Adam Jardy, The Columbus Dispatch

After getting his feet wet at Ohio State by starting 10 games in his freshman year, Musa Jallow is looking for more consistency in his sophomore season. Jallow saw at least 19 minutes in each of his first nine games with the Buckeyes, but saw his minutes dwindle as the Buckeyes moved into Big Ten play. The best performance from Jallow came in the upset win over Purdue, where he hit three three-pointers, and finished with 10 points.

A big reason for increased optimism for Jallow heading into his sophomore season is because he was picked to participate in the United States’ U18 team camp earlier this month. Jallow was the only college player in the camp, and while he didn’t make the squad, he did earn positive reviews while he was in camp.

The year of college experience did help Jallow during camp, and the coaches told Ohio State coach Chris Holtmann how prepared Jallow was and how quick he was able to adapt to their teachings. Kansas head coach Bill Self is the coach of the U18 team, and the pace of the practices that Self ran was something Jallow was accustomed to, where some of the players still in high school weren’t as familiar with.

Even though he didn’t make the U18 squad, Jallow hopes the time he spent in camp will help to prepare him even more for his sophomore season. With the losses of veterans like Jae’Sean Tate and Keita Bates-Diop, plenty of minutes are up for grabs on the Ohio State roster, and Jallow is hoping to earn more this season and make an impact for the Buckeyes.

“They’ll start [fall camp] at Mike. I love the competition. All the positions are in such a strong battle, it’s so healthy. They’re all drive, they’re all helping each other.”

-Ohio State linebackers coach Bill Davis on linebackers Baron Browning and Justin Hilliard via Tony Gerdeman, The-Ozone

One of the biggest questions for Ohio State heading into the 2018 season is what is going to happen at the linebacker position. While Dante Booker is returning, the Buckeyes still have to figure out who is going to replace Chris Worley and Jerome Baker.

Tuf Borland was a prime candidate to fill one of those spots, but an Achilles injury that caused him to miss spring camp is giving other linebackers and opportunity to state their case. Baron Browning saw some time at middle linebacker last year to help him learn the defense better and ease the transition for an eventual move to one of the outside linebacker positions. Justin Hilliard is another linebacker who shared time in the middle during spring practices.

While Borland could be back for the start of the season, giving Browning and Hilliard some time at MLB gives Ohio State some added versatility in their linebacking corps, which could help the Buckeyes if any more injuries pop up. The depth at middle linebacker grew even more when Ohio State was able to bring in freshman Teradja Mitchell, who was the No. 2 inside linebacker recruit in the country.

What linebackers coach Bill Davis likes most about his group, is the competition he is seeing at all the position. The fight for playing time is bringing out the best of the young linebackers, and helping them to improve. If the growth of these linebackers continue, the group will recover from the losses of Baker and Worley quicker than many were expecting.

“The ball never stops bouncing. You can play basketball all year. That’s something I would like to do is play basketball all year round, stay in shape. But there’s also a time where you have to work on your body, recover.”

-Former Ohio State forward Marc Loving via Steve Slivka, WTVG-TV

As Keita Bates-Diop and Jae’Sean Tate are hoping to hear their named called in tonight’s NBA Draft, former Ohio State Buckeye Marc Loving is just hoping for a shot. Loving wasn’t drafted in last year’s NBA Draft, and spent last season with the Delaware 87ers in the NBA G-League.

Despite having opportunities to play basketball overseas, Loving is hoping to latch on with an NBA Summer League team and draw the interest of an NBA team so he can continue to play basketball in the United States. Last year Loving appeared in 29 games for the 87ers, averaging 6.1 points per game. Despite only seeing 17.6 minutes per game, he was able to play with former NBA players Emeka Okafor and Shannon Brown, and take in some of the lessons from the veterans.

As Loving works on what is the next step in his career, he recently was able to work with kids at a basketball camp at his St. John’s Jesuit, his alma mater in Toledo. One of the things he did impart on the youngsters is to put in time and effort in what you want to be good at, whether that be basketball or anything else. Loving is putting in the effort to try and kickstart his career, and hopefully it pays off for the former Buckeye soon.

The forward out of Ohio State is expected to hear his name called in the first round of the 2018 NBA Draft

On Thursday night, Keita Bates-Diop is expected to hear his name called sometime during the first round of the NBA Draft. Bates-Diop, a member of Chris Holtmann’s inaugural team at Ohio State, was the catalyst to the Buckeyes getting back to the NCAA Tournament in 2018.

During his redshirt junior campaign of 2017-18, Bates-Diop shined. He was named Big Ten Player of the Week four times, National Player of the Week by the USBWA once, and was also one of 10 finalists for the Naismith Trophy.

Those accolades came with good reason. Throughout the course of the season, KBD had a double-double on 13 different occasions. On the road against Purdue and Indiana, he pulled down rebounds and put up points to cross the double-double plateau. And in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament, Bates-Diop dropped 24 points on 12 boards against South Dakota State en route to an OSU win.

Against No. 1 Michigan State back on Jan. 7, KBD pulled together a 32-point outing, and put the Big Ten on notice that, yes, the Buckeyes were back. Without the Normal, Ill., prospect on last year’s team, the Buckeyes would’ve floundered.

Expectations weren’t high for Ohio State last season. A new coach combined with an exodus of talent via transfers created a bleak outlook for the Buckeyes: the cellar of the Big Ten.

But, that didn’t happen—and it’s thanks to the work of KBD.

While he isn’t projected to be a No. 1 pick, Bates-Diop has the intangibles to become a star at the professional level.

Strengths

KBD is 6-foot-7, and can do a little bit of everything well. He can work inside for a rebound and a putback; he can also pull-up a shot from three-point range if he needed to. Last season against Maryland, he went 6-of-8 from beyond the arc. As a total in 2017-18, Bates-Diop buried 66-of-184 three-pointers (35.9 percent).

Since Golden State started the new trend of an aerial assault from downtown, the “big man” can’t just be a rebound machine. The new-age forward has to get rebounds, be able to guard the perimeter and be able to launch shots from the perimeter, too. Bates-Diop has a little experience doing all those things, and will only build off that experience.

DraftExpress did a scouting report on KBD, and they hit the nail on the head in regards to his ability to play defense:

When Bates-Diop is fully engaged, he shows the ability to be a real stopper defensively, and has the quickness, perimeter mobility, and length to defend multiple positions, something which you can’t have enough of in today’s NBA.

If Bates-Diop has to go up and guard against a Stephen Curry or Jayson Tatum, he probably could do it. If KBD has to go down in the post and contest shots, I’m willing to believe that he’ll find ways to make blocks and/or stops.

On top of taking OSU to the tourney, Bates-Diop was Big Ten Player of the Year and First-Team All-Big Ten. The conference was no joke this season, as Michigan ended up in the Final Four, and Purdue made a decent run in March. KBD put together a show in an elite conference, and I believe he’ll be able to do the same (with some decent coaching) in the NBA.

Weaknesses

In the final handful of games last season, Bates-Diop looked tired. That could’ve been for a number of different reasons—ranging from the condensed conference schedule, to having to be on the court for over 30 minutes for most of the games. However, there’s no denying that late-season KBD looked a lot different from the KBD that put on a clinic against Michigan State.

On top of the tiredness, there was also an inconsistency to Bates-Diop’s ability to score. At its worst, KBD was held to just six points against...Rutgers. In the tournament game against South Dakota State, Bates-Diop scored a respectable 24 points, however, it came off a 7-of-19 display from the field. On the defensive end, teams were able to crash the glass and get better looks around the floor against the Buckeyes.

It may be easier to suggest that as the season wore on, the Buckeyes as a whole just got tired. There’s probably some truth to that. But there’s also, I believe, some truth in that teams began focusing on Ohio State more as the season progressed. Remember, the Buckeyes weren’t a team on anybody’s radar. During the non-conference slate of games, Gonzaga, Clemson and North Carolina scored victories over the Buckeyes. However, once the Big Ten games heated up, OSU went on a run of nine-straight wins. Teams began adapting to KBD and the Buckeyes, and that’s when the cracks started to show on the armor.

His NBA.com draft combine analysis speaks a little about his inconsistencies on defense

Made an impact protecting the rim, rebounding out of his area, and guarding multiple positions when he was dialed in last season. Sense of urgency comes and goes, but tools shine in spurts.

Doing well in spurts may make KBD an excellent role player or sixth man. But with more conditioning and practice, Bates-Diop can get to a starting role.

Ohio State makes top list for a football, and basketball prospect

A four-star RB has the Buckeyes on his early top-10 list.

The Ohio State Buckeyes signature recruiting event of the summer, Friday Night Lights, is happening in just a couple days. But before the marquee event takes place, the OSU coaching staff is still putting work in on the recruiting trail.

Earlier this week, recruits made the trek to Columbus for visits, and a handful of others placed the Scarlet and Gray on their lists of top schools. The trend of making the cut for top prospects continued again, as a four-star running back has the Buckeyes in his early top-10 list.

Back to the well?

St. Thomas Aquinas (Fla.) has been a key Ohio State pipeline. Throughout the Urban Meyer years, the likes of Joey Bosa, Nick Bosa, Duron Carter and Trevon Grimes have made the move from the Sunshine State to the Buckeye State. Whether a member of the offense or defense, Meyer was able to recruit St. Thomas Aquinas stars to OSU.

Late Tuesday night, the Buckeyes found out—at least for right now—that they are in the right direction to gaining another member from that highly coveted pipeline. Daniel Carter, a member of the 2019 class, made his top-10 list known, and it includes a bevy of college football powerhouses.

Top 10 (No interviews) anyteam can get added or replaced pic.twitter.com/SpzJLM5Y45

— Daniel Carter (@KING__CARTER5) June 20, 2018

Oregon, Miami (FL), Kansas State, Georgia, Utah, LSU, Texas, Pittsburgh and Illinois join OSU in the hunt for the four-star RB. The 5-foot-10 rusher holds over 25 offers, so this latest unveiling shows that he’s trimmed quite a few other top schools from his focus.

According to the 247sports composite, Carter comes in as the No. 356 prospect in his class, the No. 19 RB, and No. 49 prospect from the state of Florida. One early vote (back in February) was casted in the 247sports crystal ball for Miami to be the eventual landing spot for Carter; however, he just made an official visit to Pittsburgh on June 15.

The interesting thing about Carter’s list is that it’s not permanent. He notes that schools can be added or replaced on his list. I figure if one of his top schools gets a RB commitment from someone else, then it’s entirely possible to think that Carter could swap that program out for another. Schools like Auburn, Ole Miss, Maryland, Virginia Tech and West Virginia, who made offers to Carter but didn’t see their name at this stage of the recruitment, may not be entirely out of luck.

With the list not being completely set combined with an abundance of time before a commitment on paper has to be reached, the battle for Daniel Carter may be one to watch.

A top-8 spot for a PG

Chris Holtmann and his basketball staff were also out and about on the recruiting trail, too. Good news was announced just after noon on Wednesday, as class of 2019 four-star point guard Kyle Sturdivant (Norcross, GA / Norcross) made it known on Twitter that he had his college selection down to eight schools.

. pic.twitter.com/RlhcRLe8Yq

— Kyle Sturdivant (@dr3amchasin) June 20, 2018

Ohio State made the cut, as did a handful of schools that are in close proximity to the 6-foot-3 PG. Home-state schools Georgia and Georgia Tech made the list, as did Clemson, Ole Miss and Florida. While OSU is the most northern school on the list, they aren’t the furthest west. Both California and USC made the list as well, showing that the recruiting battle for Sturdivant has gone national.

And there’s a good reason why teams are battling it out to get his commitment. According to the 247sports composite, he’s the 120th best prospect in his class, 14th best PG, and 10th best player in Georgia. Twenty schools have already come knocking on his door with an offer, with notables Florida State and Xavier being left off the final eight.

There’s only four votes on the 247sports crystal ball for Sturdivant. Two of them geared toward USC; one each have been casted for Ohio State and Georgia Tech.

OSU making the top-8 for Sturdivant and getting one early crystal ball prediction seems like a good omen. We’ll keep you covered if Holtmann and the Buckeyes get any closer to landing this PG as their second member of the ‘19 class.

May the odds be ever in your favor.

“So while Ohio State is the favorite in the Big Ten for a reason, and is certainly capable of going 12-0, the value on the Under at even odds is too much to pass up.”

-Tom Fornelli, CBS Sports

Urban Meyer has not lost a lot of games in Columbus. In fact, there have been just three seasons--2013, 2016 and 2017--in which he has lost more than one game, and his lowest win total, in 2016, was 11--a year in which the Buckeyes played just one postseason game. In the regular season, Meyer has had at least 10 wins in each of his six seasons, with the low point coming in 2017 with losses to Oklahoma and Iowa. He did not lose a regular season game in his first two seasons in Columbus.

Ohio State is once again a favorite to win the Big Ten East, the Big Ten overall and a College Football Playoff bid. Vegas is giving the Buckeyes the highest win total projection of any Big Ten team at 10.5. Taking the over doesn’t leave much room for error, especially when looking at road games against Penn State and Michigan State and the Nov. 24 showdown against Michigan in Columbus. A non-conference, neutral-site game against TCU won’t be a cake walk either, and a cross-division matchup against Nebraska could be a surprise coming off a bye week. However, if there is a coach who has consistently given reason to take the over, it is Meyer.

Wisconsin has the next highest total at 10. Playing in the Big Ten West, the Badgers have cross-division matchups on the road at Michigan and Penn State with Rutgers in Madison. Penn State is sitting at 9.5 wins, with Michigan and Michigan State just behind at nine as the balance of power continues to sit in the East. Given that Wisconsin plays two of the top teams in the East, and would likely play a third in the Big Ten Championship game, it would seem that the winner of the championship would be a shoe in for a playoff spot.

“We are excited about the challenge of this nonconference schedule. Our hope is that it prepares us for the grind of a 20-game Big Ten season.”

-Ohio State basketball coach Chris Holtmann, via Marcus Hartman, Dayton Daily News

There is no lack of intrigue for the Ohio State basketball team as it heads into the 2018-19 season. Chris Holtmann is entering his second year at the helm of a team which experienced a not-quite-meteoric but steady rise back from relative obscurity last season. The Buckeyes finished 25-9, including a 15-3 conference mark. It was a big momentum shift certainly, but there is still work to be done.

That work will, in terms of schedule, start with the Buckeyes’ non-conference slate, which was released earlier this week. While Ohio State was able to find success last season in Big Ten play, highlighted by the team’s January win over then-No. 1 Michigan State, the unit’s non-conference performance was not quite as splendid. It is true that the Buckeyes did not lose to any teams they unequivocally should have beaten (all five losses in non-conference play came to teams ranked in the RPI top-40), but they did lose 31 percent of non-conference matchups compared to less than 17 percent of conference games.

The non-conference schedule this year, though shorter with the addition of two more Big Ten games, features a similar balance of tough opponents, starting with Cincinnati, which finished last season ranked sixth nationally. Ohio State will also face Creighton, Syracuse and UCLA--all tournament teams from this past spring.

In one of the more nostalgic aspects of this season’s schedule, the basketball team will go back to its roots during non-conference play, returning to St. John Arena for a game against the Cleveland State Vikings. The matchup will mark the first time since 2010 that the Buckeyes played in the historic arena, which was home to Ohio State basketball from 1956-98. In addition to Cincinnati and Cleveland State, Ohio State is scheduled to face Youngstown State, rounding out its slate of in-state matchups.

“With a jump cut that at times looks like the football cousin of an Allen Iverson crossover, Dobbins produced plenty of ‘Did you just see that?’ moments as a freshman.”

-Dan Murphy, ESPN

It came as a bit of a surprise when J.K. Dobbins emerged as Ohio State’s leading rusher last season. For starters, he was supposed to be a substitute for Mike Weber, who was sidelined with a hamstring injury for the season opener but who had just come off an outstanding redshirt freshman season himself. Then there was the fact that he was a true freshman with just a few months spent with the program. And then there was the overriding belief that J.T. Barrett’s senior season, when he had the support of Kevin Wilson and Ryan Day, would be the one where he would finally break free, crushing the downfield passing game and taking pressure off the run.

In hindsight, none of those things mattered, and now expectations are sky high for the sophomore back in his second season with the program. In fact, with Barrett gone, it will be up to Dobbins to carry the load of offensive production on offense, especially early in the season while Dwayne Haskins gets comfortable in the starting quarterback role. It is unlikely that the running back arrangement of 2017 will change, especially with both Dobbins and Weber healthy. The rotation of running backs will be even more crucial as Haskins will rely on an established run game to take away pressure on the quarterback.

Dobbins finished last season with 1,403 yards on 194 carries, finding the end zone on seven occasions. He led the conference with 7.5 yards per carry on his way to being named second team All-Big Ten.

Beyond Dobbins and Weber, Ohio State returns a nearly intact receiving corps along with three offensive linemen. Even with all the talent around him, however, Dobbins already looks like the most exciting player on the field heading into the season.

What screams summertime more than a watermelon eating contest?

It’s scorching hot outside, and we’re still a couple months away from football season, but that isn’t stopping the the freshman on the Ohio State football team from competing with each other — in just about anything.

This is about the time in the offseason when coaches and team turn their focus on building a rapport among their players and establish some chemistry that can translate onto the field. Buckeyes usually spend their summers paintballing with their position groups, grilling out at Urban Meyer’s house, and/or doing a slew of other unrelated activities.

Now that the freshman have landed in Columbus and are starting to get their feet wet with a new group of teammates, they participated in a friendly watermelon eating contest to break the ice a bit.

TCU also gets bonus points for the unpredictability of an early non-conference game. The Horned Frogs have holes to fill on both sides of the ball, and are probably more of unknown commodity than Ohio State at this point. But the Buckeyes are turning ...

It’s a huge week for Buckeye recruiting.

Every year, it seems like there’s a few top prospects that, despite a lack of football experience, have risen up their class rankings because of massive potential and raw talent. That was the case with Penn State’s Jayson Oweh last year, and this year, there’s a new defensive tackle with very little experience playing football, but a ton of upside—and somehow, he hails from the same school.

Blair Academy (Blairstown, NJ) product David Ojabo has captivated recruiters and coaches all over the country with his incredible combination of size and speed. At 6-foot-5, 233 pounds, he runs a 4.75 40-yard dash time, and is one of the best track runners in the state. He’s a physical freak, and the opportunity to coach him up has defensive line coaches all over the country excited.

Larry Johnson is one of those coaches, and the Buckeyes have been very active in recruiting David, especially in the past few months. They offered a scholarship back in May, and have been in consistent contact with Ojabo. He named Ohio State as one of his top schools on Monday. Today, Ojabo visited the campus, as part of a Midwest tour he seems to be doing.

Ojabo was at Notre Dame over the weekend, Michigan on Monday, for both a camp and a visit, and Ohio State yesterday. I don’t think the Buckeyes lead here, and as of right now, Michigan and Penn State should be considered the favorites. However, I don’t think the Buckeyes are out of it by any means, and will push hard to stay in this recruitment.

‘Bazed’ and confused

Yet another possible Buckeye quarterback in the 2019 class is now off the board. After months of questions about if the Buckeyes would extend an offer to Archbishop Alter (Dayton, OH) quarterback Connor Bazelak, we got a pretty solid answer on Monday, as Bazelak announced his commitment to Missouri.

COMMITTED!! #MIZZOU pic.twitter.com/TAgil7XyoH

— Connor Bazelak (@BazelakConnor) June 17, 2018

Bazelak, the 700th ranked player and 25th ranked quarterback, according to 247Sports, seemed like a possibility to fill the quarterback spot, seeing as how he’s from Ohio, and seems to fit the mold of what Ohio State wants at quarterback. However, Ohio State was never particularly interested, and never extended an offer because of it.

This move, while not shocking, does bring the question up once again about who Ohio State’s 2019 quarterback will be. With Grant Gunnell, Graham Mertz, and Bazelak all committed, there’s not a ton of options left for Ohio State. Michigan State commit Dwan Mathis has an offer, but like with Bazelak and Gunnell, Ohio State doesn’t seem fully sold on him.

Right now, the best bet would probably be West Port (Ocala, FL) product Brian Maurer. Maurer, ranked 493rd nationally, doesn’t yet hold a Buckeye offer, but that could change very soon. Maurer will be on campus Friday for FNL, and he will throw, along with 2020 quarterbacks Jack Miller and CJ Dixon, as well as 2021 signal caller Noah Bodden.

If he impresses, and proves that he’s capable of playing at a high enough level, he’ll pick up an offer. I wouldn’t be shocked at all if he committed shortly after that.

Quick Hits

  • Permian (Odessa, TX) athlete Peyton Powell included Ohio State in his top ten. He projects out as a wide receiver at the next level, but I don’t think he’s a take for the Buckeyes right now.

I used to pray for times like this... Thank you to all of the coaches that trusted in my ability. That being said here is my TOP 1️⃣0️⃣ schools I will be focusing on (Recruitment Still Open) #SicEm #HottyToddy #Wreckem #GoPokes #Hoos #WPS #HookEm #LittyVille #Frogs #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/sAv6vmpH0p
