Also, how big will Jae’Sean Tate’s departure be for the basketball Buckeyes?

“This rivalry has become one of the most one-sided affairs in college football this millennium, with the Buckeyes posting a 15-3 record since 2000. What will it take for the Wolverines to add to get a few more wins on the board?”

-Bill Bender, The Sporting News

We all know the facts at this point; Urban Meyer is 5-0 against Michigan during his tenure in Columbus. TTUN is 2-15 in the rivalry since 2001. The Wolverines haven’t won in The Horseshoe since John Cooper was the Buckeyes’ coach. While any true OSU fan knows these stats inside and out, it’s still fun to see them all laid out like they are in Bender’s article.

He doesn’t dive deeply into what it will take for Jim Harbaugh to finally right the Maize and Blue ship, but he does briefly touch on what I think will be the best shot that they have: Ole Miss transfer quarterback Shea Patterson. Both teams will be breaking in new QBs during the 2018 season, so when Patterson and Dwayne Haskins presumably take to the field in the final game of the regular season, their development throughout their first seasons as starters will likely be the biggest factor in determining the outcome.

Last season, Patterson completed 166 of 260 passes for the Rebels, accounting for 2,259 yards, along with 17 touchdowns and nine interceptions. After a back-and-forth NCAA review, Patterson was deemed eligible to play right away due to the fact that Ole Miss was caught being Ole Miss and effectively lied to the former five-star recruit about the status of their NCAA investigation.

Once the QB was deemed eligible, the expectations went through the roof from Michigan Men across the country. In fact, confidence in the team following the ruling moved the Wolverines up to the fifth best odds in the country to win the national championship, especially since 2018 was always looked at as “their year.” (OSU is currently third).

Now, considering the recruiting issues that UM has had recently, I would still much rather make a bet on Haskins, but Harbaugh’s team can’t finish third or fourth in the Big Ten East for a fourth straight year... can they?

No place he'd rather be.

One of @o_tate_'s highlights from his senior year was when it hit him how much @ChrisHoltmann cared about his @OhioStateHoops squad.

With all due respect to reigning Big Ten Player of the Year Keita Bates-Diop, in my opinion, Jae’Sean Tate is going to be the hardest departure for Chris Holtmann and the OSU men’s basketball team to replace. While KBD might have put up numbers that made him the center of attention for most of the 2017-18 season, it was Tate that always felt like the heart and soul of the team.

Tate was the type of player that as a Buckeye fan you loved, but totally could understand why opposing fans hated. At 6-foot-4, he certainly wasn’t undersized for the college game, but the fact that he often played on the block, he was constantly battling bigger and stronger players down low--and often out-working them. That of course doesn’t factor in the times that Holtmann turned to him as a primary ball-handler either.

For most of Tate’s time in Columbus, the Buckeyes were at a talent disadvantage against the top of the Big Ten. However, Tate’s willingness to bang with the biggest bodies in the conference often masked some of those deficiencies, giving OSU the opportunity to be the plucky, upset-minded team that they were in recent years. Tate knew how to fill up a stat sheet, but his biggest contribution was as a leader and as an example of what tough-nosed, B1G basketball should be.

With Tate, Bates-Diop, Kam Williams, and Andrew Dakich no longer on the floor for OSU, other returning players like, Kaleb Wesson, C.J. Jackson, Andre Wesson, Musa Jallow, Micah Potter, Kyle Young (more on him in a minute), and graduate transfer Keyshawn Woods will need to step up if the Buckeyes want to repeat their Big Dance berth.

However, I am a bit hard-pressed to pick someone out from this group that can step into the Aaron Craft/Tate/Dakich role of a guy that gives maximum effort and leads by the example of his intense, selfless play.

“That can still be a tough situation to deal with, especially for a player like Young who went from being the highest-rated recruit in Butler history to a rotation player after following Chris Holtmann to Ohio State.”

-Adam Jardy, The Columbus Dispatch

It’s hard out there for a former heavily-recruited collegiate athlete who has been forced to wait his turn on a surprisingly competitive team during his freshman year.

When Kyle Young announced that he would follow Holtmann and flip his commitment from Butler to Ohio State, it was a major feather in the new Buckeye coach’s cap. And while it will still likely have important implications in the future, Young didn’t make much of an impact during his first year in Columbus, outside of his 21.5 minutes per game in two contests against Michigan.

The Massillon, Ohio, native averaged just 1.8 points in 8.6 minutes per game last year, often coming in when the Buckeye front court got into foul trouble. Young was a healthy scratch in OSU’s final four games of last season, but likely will factor heavily into Ohio State’s plans for 2018-19.

The team’s only recruited scholarship senior C.J. Jackson understands Young’s importance to the team, and is taking the rising sophomore under his wing.

“I just don’t think he understands what he can bring to the table,” Jackson said. “I don’t think he understands how good he is sometimes, so guys like that, you want to be a bug in their ear and keep telling them, ‘Just keep coming, just keep coming,’ and those days where it’s hard or he doesn’t feel like it, those are the days that you really push him. If you do it consistently, he’ll trust you.”

Standing 6-foot-8, Young is a likely candidate to replace KBD as the team’s power forward. Those are no small shoes to fill, especially when you consider that Tate won’t be around to help down low.

It’s going to be an uphill climb for the basketball Buckeyes this year, but if Young can find a way to live up to those early expectations, they might have a better shot of getting back to the top of the proverbial mountain.

Another St. Thomas Aquinas star is headed to Ohio State.

For the fourth time since Sunday, and the third time in as many days, Ohio State has picked up a commitment. Dwan Mathis kicked off the party on Sunday, Lejond Cavazos kept it going on Wednesday, Paris Johnson Jr. joined the bunch last night, and now, Jordan Battle ended his recruitment and committed to the Buckeyes.

Battle, a long time Buckeye target, had been on commitment watch for months. There was a time, back around Ohio State’s spring game, where it felt like he was about to commit, but when he cancelled his trip to Columbus—instead heading to Miami’s spring game—it felt like the two sides had moved on.

However, Ohio State was too interested in Battle to let him slip away. They pushed for a visit in June, Battle made that visit this past weekend for FNL, and that was all he needed. After thinking it over and coming to the conclusion that Ohio State was the best place for him, Battle made his commitment on Twitter today.

Despite his recent trip to Columbus being his first, Battle and Ohio State have been very familiar for a while now. The Buckeyes offered him back in February, but because of their connection with St. Thomas Aquinas, they’ve been aware of him for several years. He’s been a huge target for Urban Meyer, Alex Grinch and Greg Schiano in the 2019 class, and they’re extremely excited to have him. It’s not hard to see why. Let’s take a look at what he brings to Columbus.

On the field

If you had to design a safety to play in the modern era of college football, he’d probably look and play a lot like Jordan Battle. At 6-foot-2, 185 pounds, Jordan runs a 4.58 40-time, and looks every bit as fast as that on film. That speed, size, and Jordan’s ability to jump make him an interception waiting to happen.

That was a big part of his game as a junior. He tormented quarterbacks consistently, and seemed nearly unbeatable on deep balls. He’s great at tracking those high lob passes, and almost looks like a center fielder doing it. He’s got great hands, and turns 50/50 balls into 70/30 balls with his anticipation and vertical ability.

His most impressive skill isn’t his speed, range, length or hands. It’s his body control. It shows up on interceptions, with his ability to put himself in between the quarterback and receivers to make plays, while still staying in bounds. He looks and plays a lot like a receiver and that makes him extremely dangerous in the defensive backfield.

With that body control comes tackling, and despite his lack of weight, Jordan Battle can absolutely crush receivers, running backs and quarterbacks when he gets the chance. Whether it’s in the backfield, across the middle, down the sidelines or in the flats, Battle is an extremely willing hitter, and a surprisingly sound tackler for a high school defensive back.

St. Thomas Aquinas has fantastic coaches, and it’s obvious that Battle has learned his tackling methods from a coach that knows what he’s doing. He wraps up, doesn’t lead with his head, and will fit right in with Ohio State’s approach to tackling. He’ll need to bulk up a bit to be able to handle D1 running backs, but it’s not anything I’m too worried about.

The other main concern in Battle’s game is that he doesn’t seem super comfortable in man coverage, but that’s nothing Greg Schiano and Alex Grinch can’t manage. I think Battle has what may be the highest floor of any defensive back in this class. I don’t see any way he’s not a future starter at the least in Columbus.

In the class

Jordan is the 13th member of Ohio State’s 2019 class, and the third safety, joining Bryson Shaw and Craig Young. This isn’t going to be a huge class for defensive backs because Ohio State took a ton each of the last two recruiting cycles, but these three safeties, along with Ronnie Hickman and at least one more cornerback (my guess is Peyton Powell) will make for a great class.

This commitment is a big one, because it moves Ohio State to fifth in the 247Sports team rankings, back above Michigan, who briefly led the Big Ten earlier this week. Battle, ranked No. 171 nationally and No. 12 among safeties, is only going to keep moving up the rankings. he already jumped from the 400s up to his current spot in the past few months, and after his senior season he could very easily see a move into the top 100s.

Battle picked Ohio State over 25 offers, from LSU, Michigan, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas, Miami, Clemson, Florida and Georgia, among others. While the two Florida schools seemed like the biggest threats here, Battle was always going to be a Buckeye as long as the Buckeyes wanted him. Miami had a shot for a while, but when Ohio State pushed for Battle’s commitment, it was all over.

You can view Battle’s highlights below, and read his commitment piece here.

The Buckeyes have put a cap on their safety class with a star from Florida.

If you had asked me a little over two months ago where Jordan Battle would be playing college football, I probably wouldn’t have said Ohio State. After the Buckeyes accepted commitments from Ronnie Hickman and Bryson Shaw, it seemed that they had moved on from Battle, and decided to go in a different direction.

Battle had been scheduled to visit for Ohio State’s spring game, but when he attended Miami’s spring game rather than travel to Columbus, the writing seemed to be on the wall. However, Ohio State flipped the script in the beginning of May, and pushed for a Battle visit in June.

That push obviously worked, and just minutes ago, Battle announced his commitment to Ohio State shortly after that visit to Columbus. Despite taking another commitment from a possible safety in Craig Young, and landing Bryson Shaw in April, the Buckeyes like Battle’s game too much to pass up, and Battle’s visit to Ohio State today for Friday Night Lights showed him all he needed to see.

— VII ™️ (@jordantofly100) June 29, 2018

Battle is the 13th member of Ohio State’s 2019 class, the third and likely final safety in the class, along with Hickman and Shaw. His commitment moves Ohio State to fifth in the 247Sports team rankings. They sit atop the Big Ten, as per usual.

Battle, a 6-foot-1, 187-pound true safety is ranked No. 170 nationally, and 12th among all safeties. He’s yet another Buckeye to come from St. Thomas Aquinas, one of the best high schools in Florida, as he joins Trevon Grimes, Nick Bosa, Damon Arnette, and Joey Bosa. The pipeline isn’t fully complete yet, but it’s certainly on the way. For any program, that’s one hell of a pipeline to have.

Battle committed to Ohio State over 21 other schools, ranging from Georgia, Miami, Michigan, Florida, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas, among others. Battle is one the fastest rising prospects in the country, and I’d be surprised if he’s anywhere outside of the top-50 players in the country by the end of the year.

You can watch Battle’s highlights below. Land-Grant Holy Land will have more on this commitment soon.

The massive 2020 star has incredible potential.

There have been some complaints about offensive line recruiting in recent years, albeit not many, but enough to be noticeable in certain Buckeye circles. Questions about the level of talent coming to Columbus. Questions about taking three-star projects and more questions about high profile misses on players like Jackson Carman.

Those questions can probably go away now. After landing two 247Sports top-100 nationally ranked lineman in 2017 (Josh Myers, Wyatt Davis), two in 2018 (Matthew Jones, Nichlas Petit-Frere) and holding commitments from two so far in 2019 (Harry Miller, Doug Nester), the Buckeyes are in a great spot for the future up front. In case that wasn’t enough, Urban Meyer and co. added a commitment from Paris Johnson Jr., who will probably go down as the best lineman in the 2020 class. That’s pretty good.

It’s hard to overstate just how crucial it is to get Paris committed this early on. He’s a phenomenal player, and his impact, both on the field and in the class will be immense. Ohio State is in contention for the top class in 2020, and it seems like they have a legitimate shot, with some of the top players in the class showing serious interest.

Before we get too far ahead of ourselves with prognosticating the class, let’s take a look at what the commit at hand brings to Columbus on and off the field.

On the field

Before we get too deep into the film, the first and main thing that needs to be said about Paris is that this kid is as good of an athlete as you’ll see on the offensive line in high school football. He has fantastic size at 6-foot-7, 285 pounds, but the most impressive part of his frame is that his weight comes almost entirely from muscle. He’s in phenomenal shape, and that’s a huge part of what makes him so good.

When someone is that big, has quick feet, and can move as fast as Johnson can, there’s almost no way to get past them. His long arms and lateral speed help him excel as a pass blocker, as he can negate speed rushers with relative ease. His quickness is just as valuable in the rushing game, because he’s able to get down the field and pick up second and third level blocks consistently.

With all that being said, there are some things that need work, as always, because no recruit is perfect. Paris, while having a great first step, is a bit slow out of the stance. He doesn’t seem super comfortable in pass protection off of a three-point stance, which is pretty common in young linemen. Luckily, he’ll almost always be standing up in a two-point stance at Ohio State, because the Buckeyes very rarely have their tackles down low.

On top of that, Johnson is a bit handsy, which will get him in trouble with holding at the next level. However, both of these issues are mostly just me nit-picking, and all of it needs to be taken with a grain of salt, because Paris is still just 16 years old. It’s extremely impressive that he was as good as he was as a sophomore, and he’s only going to get better as he gets older and continues growing into his body.

In the class

There’s a palpable energy and level of excitement around Ohio State’s 2020 class—and for good reason. As I mentioned earlier, there are a ton of top prospects that seem like heavy Buckeye leans, including the top player in the class, defensive end Bryan Bresee. There seems to be a sense of camaraderie among commits and targets, and some have taken to social media to express their excitement, including Lejond Cavazos, who committed to Ohio State on Wednesday.

What y’all failing to realize is we just getting started... we will have the #1 class in the nation! #GoBuckshttps://t.co/WFX47nJtyC

— Lejond Cavazos (@lejondaryy) June 29, 2018

Johnson Jr. is the third member of the class, though there are some serious rumblings that four and five could be on the way very soon. He joins Cavazos and fellow offensive tackle Jake Wray. This commitment moves Ohio State to fourth in the country for 2020, just behind Miami (who has eight commitments), Oklahoma and Texas A&M.

Johnson Jr. picked Ohio State over 43 other offers, from pretty much every power school worth mentioning in college football. Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Miami, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Stanford, Texas, Texas A&M, USC and pretty much all of the Big Ten.

After a recent country-wide road trip this month for Johnson, to Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia, USC, Stanford, UCLA and Cal (one of these is not like the other), he was ready to shut his recruitment down. Despite efforts from all those schools, along with Notre Dame, Michigan and Penn State, Ohio State was the overwhelming favorite here, and Paris didn’t see anything to change that.

The Buckeyes continue to impress for many of the nation’s best.

With the recruiting dead period in full effect and the completion of Ohio State’s summer camp season, the coaching staff and recruits alike are taking a much deserved break from communication with each other. Even though the dead period silences contact, there’s still good news for the Buckeyes this week (and even last night) in regards to gaining pledges in both their 2019 and 2020 classes. Ohio State is a recruiting machine as most know and this week was no different. With a staff as good as the Buckeyes, you know even a dead week means there’s going to be some momentum. As the staff and players gear up for the remainder of the summer months and fall camp, recruiting will surely pick back up. However, it may have never slowed down.

Oak Park beginning a pipeline to OSU?

Earlier this week, Buckeye Nation was taken by storm when the never ending 2019 QB recruiting saga was ended. Reported on the evening of Friday Night Lights, Oak Park, Michigan native Dwan Mathis was on campus to visit the Buckeyes. Fast forward a few days and cut out a few details and the one-time Michigan State commit is now the signal caller of the Buckeyes’ 2019 recruiting class. A four-star prospect and the ninth best pro-style QB in the country, per 247sports, the Ohio State staff and fans are thrilled to have this recruitment in the rearview mirror and headed onto other positions of need and interest.

One position of interest, even though in the 2020 class, is always going to be the offensive line. It’s been said by Meyer before several times, the key to a championship caliber team is a strong defensive and offensive line as the battle are always won in the trenches. Keep it in Oak Park and you have a prospect in Justin Rogers that the Buckeyes are extremely high on and would love to add to their 2020 class. A teammate of the aforementioned Mathis, Rogers is no stranger to Ohio State. A visitor to campus several times, the Buckeyes are easily in his top list of schools already and may even be the leader for his services.

Yesterday, in an video interview with Kevin Noon of Rivals.com, Justin took the time to speak about Michigan native players coming to Ohio State and the success they have and will continue to have. As the recruitment of Rogers goes even further, the Buckeyes will definitely continue to play a major role. Now, with Mathis, his current QB now in the fold, this could even help Ohio State’s great chances at landing another Oak Park Knight.

Ohio State continues to make the cut

It’s not unusual to see Ohio State make a top schools list for a top prospect. Literally, in each recruiting cycle that passes, the Buckeyes are seemingly always considered by the nation’s best players. This 2019 cycle and the future 2020 cycle are no different. As one of the top programs in the country in every aspect of their program, the Buckeyes are dominating on the recruiting trail and it’s not out of the question to wonder how long they can keep this momentum going. The easy answer, as long as Meyer is at the helm, you can place a nice chunk of change on success on and off the field.

Yesterday, multiple prospects released their top schools and to no surprise, Ohio State made the cut for both lists. Starting with Tre Williams, a 6-foot-3, 310-pound defensive tackle in the 2020 class of St. John’s College in Washington D.C., Williams trimmed his list to a final 10 schools. With an impressive resume, the four-star prospect ranks as the 10th best defensive tackle in the country and also the fifth best player from DC for his class. With nearly 30 scholarship offers, trimming a list to ten can’t be easy; but with two full seasons still to be played, it’s clear to see a bit of motivation for Tre to get this process figured out sooner than others.

Top 10✅ pic.twitter.com/m2GkPHB3nD

— TGroovy (@_TreWilliams) June 28, 2018

Making the cut for Tre included Clemson, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Virginia Tech, Michigan, Tennessee, Penn State and Texas A&M. While this list is pretty solid, the good news for Ohio State is that they currently hold every prediction in their favor on the 247sports crystal ball. It’s early, but Meyer and staff have set a great a first impression and have laid a solid foundation to land Williams. Time will tell, but their current status bodes pretty well.

Part 2

Another top 2020 prospect in Bryan Bresee also gave the Buckeyes some good news last night when his list was trimmed to a final 15 schools. Much like the story of the above Tre Williams, the Buckeyes find themselves in great position for Bresee as well—and they have to love that. Bryan is currently ranked as a five-star prospect, the top player at his defensive end position, the top player in the state of Maryland, and while we’re at it, let’s also mention that he’s considered to be the best prospect in the entire country for the 2020 class.

A 6-foot-5, 290-pounder, every program in the country would love to have this prospect. In addition to the Bucks, Maryland, Alabama, Michigan, Oklahoma, Penn State, Virginia Tech, LSU, Florida, Georgia, USC, Clemson, Wisconsin, Texas A&M and Notre Dame are the only schools that still have a shot. Once again, though, the 247sports crystal ball prediction heavily favors the Buckeyes—and if that does indeed come to pass, this 2020 Ohio State class is going to be one for the ages.

BOOOOOOM! Ohio’s top player in the 2020 class will stay home.

The Ohio State Buckeyes have picked up their second 2020 commitment in as many days, and it’s a massive one, both literally and figuratively. After picking up a pledge from Florida safety Lejond Cavazos yesterday, Cincinnati offensive lineman Paris Johnson Jr. joined in on the fun, too.

Johnson Jr. is, if not the top target for the Buckeyes in 2020, one of the top targets. The enormous, 6-foot-7, 285-pound tackle is a consensus five-star recruit, and will likely be one of the best player in his class by the time he signs in December 2020. Ranked No. 8 in the 247Sports composite rankings, Johnson Jr. is one of the highest ranked commits in the Urban Meyer era, along with Chase Young, Nick Bosa, Taron Vincent and Nicholas Petit-Frere.

In addition to the Buckeyes, Johnson Jr. had offers from just about every major program in the country, including Michigan, Florida State, Notre Dame, Michigan State, Stanford, Oklahoma, Penn State and USC.

Johnson Jr. is the third member of a 2020 class that could rival the best of all time for the Buckeyes. he joins fellow tackle Jake Wray, and the aforementioned Cavazos. The class should get another huge boost this weekend, as quarterback Jack Miller is set to commit on Sunday.

You can watch Johnson’s highlights below. Land Grant Holy-Land will have more on this huge commitment soon.
