What does QB commit Jack Miller bring to Ohio State?

Ohio State is getting one of the nation’s best young quarterbacks
Ohio State isn’t going to have to worry about quarterback for at least two recruiting cycles. After landing Dwan Mathis one week ago, locking up their 2019 QB spot, they found their man in 2020 just minutes ago, as Jack Miller announced his commitment on Twitter. The fact that Miller, a longtime Buckeye target, made his commitment official and public more than a year before he will have the opportunity to officially sign with Ohio State is a huge deal.
One of the most important things to do in college football recruiting is to find class leaders, or guys that can help recruit their peers to their schools. They can be any position, but generally, you’ll find them a lot of them at quarterback. Miller fits that role perfectly, and he will serve as the member of a movement in Ohio State’s 2020 class that already has a ton of hype.
Urban wants to land his first top-ranked class at Ohio State in 2020, and Miller will be a huge part of that. In addition to being an excellent leader off the field, Jack has quite a bit of talent on it. Let’s take a look at everything Ohio State is getting in the Arizona signal-caller.
On the field
Jack Miller is exactly the kind of quarterback that Ohio State has been looking for since bringing Ryan Day and Kevin Wilson in. He’s a pass first quarterback, with a lot of arm talent and natural touch. He is capable of running, but he’s never going to light the world on fire with his legs, he’s not Braxton Miller or J.T. Barrett by any means.
He has a pretty impressive distance ceiling hovering right around 50 yards, which is about as good as you’ll find in a 16-year-old quarterback. His arm strength will only get better with age, and seeing him understand how to get distance on his throws at a young age is super encouraging. Add on the fact that his deep balls rarely wobble or hang in the air, and it’s pretty easy to see why Day loves his game.
On top of a good ability on deep passes, Miller shows a ton of zip on his shorter and intermediate passes. I don’t think he has elite zip, like you’d see in the NFL, or even on the level of someone like Dwayne Haskins, but like with his strength, the zip on his shorter passes will come in time. For now, he’s able to complete passes in fairly tight spaces, and doesn’t give the defense much of a chance to make plays on underneath routes. That’s a great thing.
However, Miller’s arm talent or strength isn’t his greatest attribute. I don’t think he’ll ever be an elite thrower, and I don’t think he has extremely rare arm talent. That’s the kind of thing that someone is born with, and I just don’t think Miller has it. What he does have is excellent touch, accuracy, and football IQ.
His forte is intermediate passes, either across the middle or on the sidelines, because he’s fantastic at dropping passes into the only place a receiver can get it. He’s a quick processor, which means he’s able to read defenses and make decisions at a great rate, which compensates for more mistakes in his actual passes. He’s very smart with the ball, and can make just about any throw within 25 yards.
Like every young quarterback, Miller does have some strange quirks and a few issues. The most glaring one— and the only one I’m actually worried about— is his throwing motion. He gets great arm extension, but he does it in a way that you really don’t like to see in a college or pro quarterback. He, like every other quarterback, has a windup. Unfortunately, it’s much longer than most.
That’s an issue. A quick windup vs. a long windup can be the difference between a sack and a completion, or even between a completion and an interception. The extra milliseconds it takes for Miller to drop his shoulder and load up will absolutely hurt him against great defensive lines or cornerbacks.
The biggest issue with a long windup is that it’s not really a quirk, or a bad habit. It’s a mechanical issue, and no matter what quarterback gurus that live near a beach and own pool floaties say, mechanical issues are extremely difficult to fix. Often, trying to repair or shorten a long windup can completely break a quarterback. It’s a risky, time consuming process, and generally, college teams don’t bother with it. I don’t think it’ll be any different here.
Now, I don’t want to give out the wrong idea here. Long windups aren’t good by any means, but this isn’t the end of the world. Plenty of quarterbacks have long windups and turn out just fine in college football. The most famous example is Tim Tebow (Miller’s is nowhere near that bad), but I’d say that the majority of college quarterbacks struggle with it. Tebow was one of the best college quarterbacks of all time, and while I’m not ready to predict that for Miller, his extended windup will not make or break his college career. He should be just fine.
In the class
Miller is the fourth member of the 2020 class. He joins Jake Wray, Lejond Cavazos, and Paris Johnson Jr, with the latter two both committing in the past week. As I mentioned, there is a ton of excitement— both at Ohio State and amongst recruits— about what the Buckeyes are building in 2020. I mentioned it in Paris Johnson Jr’s impact piece as well, but Ohio State really does think that they could have an all-time class on their hands here.
And, the Buckeyes might be in for two more big commitments sooner rather than later. There have been plenty of rumblings about Cavazos’ teammate at St. Thomas Aquinas, linebacker Derek Wingo, joining the class, and that could reasonably happen at just about any time in the coming weeks. Miller’s commitment could bring on the second potential commitment, as I expect that his high school running back, Darvon Hubbard, will be a Buckeye before summer is over.
Miller’s pledge puts Ohio State behind just Miami in the 2020 class rankings. Admittedly, that means absolutely nothing right now, but to be that high up with just four commits is extremely impressive. With some of the targets left in this class that are considering Ohio State, it’s easy to see why excitement is high.

Ohio State has wrapped up their 2020 quarterback early
It’s a two quarterback commit kind of week. After Dwan Mathis committed last Sunday night, giving Ohio State their quarterback for the 2019 class, just seven days later, 2020 4-star Jack Miller has joined the club.

Miller, who visited Ohio State last weekend for Friday Night Lights, has long been considered a “when-rather-than-if” recruit, as the main question about him was not where he’d land, but when he’d officially commit to Ohio State. Despite the 2020 signing period not beginning for another year and a half, Miller has seen enough, and was ready to shut down his recruitment.
The 6-foot-4, 210 pound star quarterback is the fourth member of Ohio State’s 2020 class, along with linemen Paris Johnson Jr and Jake Wray, and safety Lejond Cavazos. His pledge moves Ohio State to second in the country, and cements their place at the top spot in the Big Ten.
While it’s unusual to see multiple quarterbacks in one class, I wouldn’t be shocked if Miller is joined at some point, either by Georgia’s C.J. Dixon or Ohio’s Demeatric Crenshaw. The 2019 class is weak for quarterbacks, and the Buckeyes will be lacking in depth by the time 2020 rolls around, so two QBs in the 2020 class makes a lot of sense.
Miller is as perfect of a fit for Ryan Day and Ohio State as possible. He’s been familiar with the Buckeye staff for years now, and has been on campus several times since he visited for a camp last June. He’s extremely comfortable with the school, the staff, and his future teammates, and recent visits have really just been about selling his parents on the school. Apparently, this visit was enough to get it done.
Miller picked the Buckeyes over offers from just about every top school in the country. Alabama, Auburn, Arizona, Arizona State, Florida State, LSU, Michigan, Michigan State, Texas A&M and USC were all among the suitors that Miller snubbed for Ohio State. He’s been the top quarterback on Ohio State’s board for years now, and to finally get him committed is a huge deal.

At Wide Receiver, Ohio State has quite the collection at the position that oozes with potential. The majority of the weapons at the position have returned with a new type of Quarterback at the helm, who could sling it all over the field.
From the playmakers from a season ago in Johnnie Dixon, Parris Campbell, K.J. Hill, Austin Mack, Terry McLaurin, and Binjimen Victor to the younger players in Elijah Gardener and Jaylen Harris, the talent accumulated at Ohio State is undeniable. Factor in the haul in the 2018 recruiting class in Kamryn Babb, L’Christian “Blue” Smith, Chris Olave, and Cameron Brown, this group is both deep and talented.
The expectation at Ohio State remains the same, win every battle and play your heart out. With the experienced members, that remains intact with Haskins at the helm. For the younger players and incoming freshmen, they have leaders atop the depth chart and a great coach to lean on and to learn from.
All players on the roster have built a bond that is strong and unbreakable, and with their playmakers from a season ago being so close to graduation, they will surely be auditioning for their shot at the NFL while teaching the younger players the ins and the outs at Ohio State. These younger players will need to learn quickly and absorb the tips of the trade prior to their departure.
I truly expect a change in the offense that will emphasize a balance between the passing and the running gameplans that will keep defenses off-balanced. These players have the talent to assist in the quest for another stellar season and it will be up to them and the coaches to figure things out as the season progresses.

Much similar to the transfer situation at the Quarterback position, the Running Backs suffered that same minor setback after the spring game. Longtime back Antonio Williams left the team after a great showing that put him in the conversation for additional snaps at his position. He looked good and ran with a lot of power, but the lure of playing time won out in the end and North Carolina got them a stud to feed.
In the beginning, both J.K. Dobbins and Mike Weber proved why they will be a problem for opposing defenses and they will look to pick up where they left off at toward the end of last season. Dobbins had an average game this spring, but his skillset is half of what the Buckeyes need this upcoming season. With Weber, he had that long run that dazzled and that essentially ended his night giving way for the aforementioned Williams and Teague to light it up.
Buckeye Nation got a treat seeing half of the future at the position with True Freshman Master Teague’s performance this spring. He ran with power, speed, and he had that crazy look in his eyes as he put his best foot forward to place him firmly into the gameplan for this season. He looked like a likely heir to the RB throne, and the future surely looks bright at the position. We still have to see what Brian Snead has in store for the staff when he arrives in a few weeks, but I am sure he will not disappoint.
There will be a lot of fireworks with this tandem, and with what Haskins can bring through the air, the potential for a more balanced offense is there, it is just a matter of execution. With Dobbins and Weber, defenses will have to choose their poison, and in what could be Weber’s final season at Ohio State, what better opportunity is there?
The Brotherhood is still strong and although Williams left, the bond is stronger than ever. With these two studs, Teague and Snead along with the walk-ons, the future is bright.

Including the 2018 class pushes the Buckeyes to a new level.
Last season, according to 247 Sports’ College Football Team Talent Composite, the Ohio State Buckeyes had the second-most talented team in the country, and their most talented team yet.
The Team Talent Composite looks at every team’s entire roster of players to come up with an average rating. Ohio State’s was 92.13 last season (they also have a points total, but that calculation is a little more opaque), second behind Alabama.
But this season’s Team Talent Composite isn’t out yet, and likely won’t be until right before the season starts, so I went ahead and totaled up the 2018 team’s average rating:
As you can see, Ohio State has gotten progressively more talented since 247 started tracking full roster talent in 2015. That team was arguably Ohio State’s best ever to not win a national championship, with nearly everyone back from the 2014 team. But the Buckeyes have significantly increased their total talent, from a narrow four-star average to a solid four-star average in 2018.
For reference, the player with the closest rating to this year’s average is freshman linebacker Dallas Gant. For 2017, it’s tight end Luke Farrell, and in 2016 and 2015 it’s between Terry McLaurin and Jerron Cage.

This box-and-whisker plot shows the distribution of team talent, with the whiskers defining the upper and lower ranges of talent rating (.997, Nick Bosa, down to .83, Sean Nuernberger), the upper and lower quartiles defining the middle 50 percent of talent, the box line showing the median talent level, the x defining the mean team talent, and the single dot at the bottom showing an outlier — long-snapper Liam McCullough (.783 rating).
Because .898, the lower quartile rating, is considered a four-star prospect, at least 75 percent of the team was ranked as a blue chip prospect. Which is good.
As far as I can tell, this is likely to be the second- or third-most talented team since 2015. Alabama’s 2017 team had an average rating of 93.33. Alabama’s 2018 team may still edge out the 2018 Buckeyes in team talent, despite the Tide finishing sixth in the recruiting rankings for the 2018 class (with a 91.82 average).
When the full country team talent ratings are updated in late summer we can compare talent with other teams, but it should be apparent that this is an insanely talented football team... but with a really difficult schedule, which we’ll get into later this summer.
