The Tennessee linebacker fits the new mold for linebackers in Columbus.

Ohio State may be on their way to developing a new pipeline state. After years of ignoring it, due to a lack of talent, Ohio State landed their fourth commitment from Tennessee under Urban Meyer, as linebacker Kane Patterson announced his pledge to the Buckeyes on Twitter.

Patterson joining Master Teague III (2018), Max Wray (2018) and Jake Wray (2020, though he has since moved to Georgia after his commitment) is a big deal for more than just on the field reasons. It solidifies a trend we’d been seeing for the past year or so; Ohio State is starting to pay attention to The Volunteer State. This is happening for a number of reasons.

Firstly, the state is starting to produce far more talent. For years, Tennessee produced one or two blue-chip prospects, and generally, they were essentially a lock to UT. That hasn’t been the case in the past couple years, and that leads me to the second reason. To put it frankly, Tennessee is not the program it used to be.

As the Volunteers struggle, Urban Meyer is flourishing, and may continue to do so, as Ohio State is still looking at Tennessee natives Cormontae Hamilton and Trey Knox in the 2019 class. They may look to add even more in 2020, as top talent like Reggie Grimes and Chris Morris express interest in the Buckeyes.

Focusing back on Patterson, what does the Nashville linebacker bring to Ohio State?

On the field

Patterson is a familiar kind of linebacker for Buckeye fans. Just like many linebackers that have headed to Columbus under Meyer (and Schiano), Patterson is an elite athlete, a hard hitter, and he looks like he could play any position on the field. For his high school, he pretty much does, lining up at running back and linebackers primarily, but doing a bunch of pass rushing, man coverage and run stuffing as well.

Essentially, Patterson is a hybrid linebacker, and that’s exactly what Ohio State wants. At 6-foot-1, 212 pounds, he’s a bit of a tweener between middle and outside linebacker, but his speed and pass rushing acumen lead me to believe he’ll end up on the outside at the next level.

That pass rushing ability may be the most impressive part of Patterson’s game. He plays with the kind of aggressiveness, speed, and reckless abandon that you love to see from a linebacker. His highlight film is filled with him blowing through the line and disrupting the play, either with a sack or by forcing the quarterback to throw before he was ready to.

That’s exactly what Ohio State wants from their linebackers when rushing the quarterback, and Patterson’s play style is not dissimilar from Darron Lee’s, or more recently, Jerome Baker’s. That speed and athleticism also makes Patterson an asset when stopping the run. He’s able to get to his gaps quickly, and is strong enough to stuff backs consistently.

The main things Patterson will need to focus on improving at the next level juxtapose each other a bit. Firstly, 212 pounds isn’t big enough to play linebacker at Ohio State. If the past is any indication, the Buckeyes will likely look to get him up to 230 before he sees the field. Secondly, he needs to work on his zone coverage skills.

He doesn’t seem very comfortable against the pass, and seems to get a bit lost when he’s not able to play downhill or aggressively. He likes to hit, and can make some big plays in the middle of the field against the pass, but he’ll have to improve his technique and ability to read the offense at the next level.

In the class

Patterson is the 14th member of Ohio State’s 2019 class. He’s the third and likely final linebacker, along with Craig Young and Cade Stover. All three players are pretty similar, and this commitment just furthers the idea of what Ohio State wants at linebacker. The future of this group is basically positionless, and filled with athletes, rather than traditional linebackers.

Patterson’s commitment moves Ohio State up to sixth in the country, just barely behind Michigan for the top spot in the Big Ten. I expect this class to finish with 23 or 24 commitments, so we’ll likely see about 10 more commitments before or on Signing Day next February.

Patterson picked Ohio State over 27 other offers, from some of the best programs in the country. This recruitment was down to Ohio State, Alabama, Tennessee, and to an extent, Texas A&M, but Ohio State has led for a while. The Buckeyes jumped to the top of his list when they offered in January, and despite visits to each of his other three finalists, Ohio State never really fell out of the top spot.

His visit to Ohio State on June 14, paired with a constant effort from Schiano, Tony Alford and Bill Davis were enough to seal the deal. You can watch Patterson’s highlights below, and read his commitment piece here.

Ohio State has found another linebacker to join Cade Stover and Craig Young

Much of the focus over the past couple weeks in Ohio State recruiting has been on the 2020 class. That attention has been well deserved obviously, as the class has landed five big commitments since June 27th. However, with that attention on the future, the 2019 class has faded a bit in the minds of Buckeye fans. That changed just moments ago, as Kane Patterson announced his commitment via Twitter.

— Kane Patterson™ ✞ (@kane_prime4) July 9, 2018

Patterson is the 14th member of Ohio State’s 2019 recruiting class. He plays both running back and linebacker for Christ Presbyterian Academy (Nashville, TN), but he’ll be staying on the defensive side of the ball in Columbus. He joins Cade Stover and Craig Young at linebacker, though Stover could move onto the defensive line at some point in the future.

This commitment moves Ohio State up to sixth in the team rankings, and puts them less than a point away from jumping Michigan for the top class in the Big Ten. For reference, Michigan holds five more commitments than Ohio State does.

Patterson’s commitment is a big one, because it’ll likely be the last from a linebacker in 2019. With the final nine(ish) slots in this class, Ohio State will be focusing on adding at least three more receivers, one or two defensive backs, and talent on both sides of the line. This group may not be as highly touted as 2017 or 2018 by the time it’s done, but there are plenty of quality recruits in this class, and Patterson is yet another one.

Patterson is a four-star recruit, and the eighth rated inside linebacker in the class. He is also the sixth best player coming out of the state of Tennessee, according to 247Sports’ composite rankings.

In addition to OSU, Patterson also had offers from Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, LSU, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Louisville, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Stanford, Georgia, Penn State, and others.

Land Grant Holy-Land will have more on this commitment soon. You can view Patterson’s highlights below.

Ohio State alums are back on the quest for $2 million.

In May, it was announced that most of last year’s Team Scarlet and Gray would reunite to make another run at the $2 million prize in The Basketball Tournament. Today, we learned that they will be getting some big help in the form of two former All-Americans, Jared Sullinger and Greg Oden.

Sullinger was a member of last year’s team that fell in double-overtime of their semifinal matchup. The former Boston Celtic and Toronto Raptor earned All-Tournament honors for his efforts, and former No. 1 overall pick Greg Oden was originally scheduled to play on the team, but had to bow out.

Since last year’s tournament, Sullinger has been playing for the Shenzhen Leopards in the Chinese Basketball Association, where he put up a pretty impressive 30.1 points and 16.6 rebounds per game.

Team Scarlet and Gray’s head coach Scoonie Penn said, “Jared is finally healthy and showing the world what he’s capable of on the court.”

There was some concern last month that Sullinger’s upcoming nuptials would keep the Buckeye from suiting up with his former teammates this summer, but it appears that he’s been able to make the schedule work, and will be back in Scarlet and Gray once more.

Oden last played professional basketball for the Jiangsu Dragons in China, where he averaged a double-double. He spent last season back on the sidelines at Ohio State where he served as a student manager under Chris Holtmann.

Sullinger and Oden will be joined on Team Scarlet and Gray by former Buckeyes Aaron Craft, David Lighty, Jon Diebler, Byron Mullens, and William Buford. As he did last year, former Buckeye and current Portland Trailblazer Evan Turner will serve as an assistant coach.

Also on the team will be Eastmoor Academy and Northern Illinois alum Leon Rodgers and former Penn Stater Talor Battle.

In addition to Team Scarlet and Gray, recent Buckeye grads Andrew Dakich, Jae’Sean Tate, and Kam Williams will suit up for team Big X, comprised of players from Big Ten teams OSU, Michigan, and Illinois.

Both Team Scarlet and Gray and Big X will kick off their tournament in Columbus at Capital University on Saturday, July 21. No. 4 Big X will face No. 13 Chattanooga Trenches at 10:00 a.m., the game will be broadcast on ESPN3, and top-seeded Team Scarlet and Gray will face the winner of the game between the No. 16 West Virginia Wildcats and No. 17 Charlotte Chess Center. You can watch that matchup on ESPN at 4:00 p.m.

Now it’s your turn to pick an Ohio State-inspired name for a pet.

After winning the Big Ten’s Thompson-Randle El Freshman of the Year Award in 2016, Ohio State running back Mike Weber dealt with injuries and a crowded backfield during his sophomore campaign.

So, as he enters his third season on the field for the Buckeyes, he has more than a little pressure on his shoulders to get back to the bulldozing, power running that made him a breakout star as a freshman.

Now, not to add even more stress to his load, a lamb has been named after the Detroit native. Talk about responsibility!

So my kid is such an Ohio State Fan he named his new show lamb Mike Weber @mikeweberjr pic.twitter.com/hQmOTiEMqP

— Janessa Dutton (@dutton_janessa) July 9, 2018

Now, not to nitpick the young man’s fandom, but in my opinion, the best pet names are of the ironic variety; like Bark Twain, Chewbarka, Mr. Meowgi, or Neil Patrick Hamster. So, I probably would have gone with something like “Parris Lambell,” but I’m allergic to everything with fur or feathers, so what do I know?

Anyway, since we are still a few weeks away from the Buckeyes opening up fall camp, what better way to waste some time on a Monday than to pick the “best”— and I use that term very loosely— Ohio State-inspired pet names?

Vote on your favorite below, and feel free to suggest other potential names in the comments below.

A class of 2020 recruit has the Buckeyes in the mix for his commitment.

For the Ohio State Buckeyes, things are looking very good on recruiting trail. One member of the 2020 class committed to OSU over the weekend, and a couple others have the Scarlet and Gray in their top schools list. While Urban Meyer is out trying to build the No. 1 class for ‘20, Chris Holtmann is also making moves in the recruiting world. Let’s take a look at what happened over the weekend.

Down to 4

Looking to stock up on wide receivers, the Bucks made the cut for four-star Rakim Jarrett (Washington, DC / St. John’s College HS) on Sunday evening. Jarrett, on Twitter, teased of a major announcement on Saturday afternoon, and delivered with his top schools list on Sunday evening.

pic.twitter.com/6SiQ0r8Fsq

— Rakim Jarrett (@RakimJarrett) July 8, 2018

Joining the Buckeyes are a trio of college football powerhouses—with one of them being a Big Ten foe. Alabama, Penn State and Florida State all have been trending well with the 6-foot wide out, but, according to the 247sports crystal ball, the Buckeyes seem to be trending the best. All five votes point to OSU being the school Jarrett will choose, and four of those votes have come in after July 4. The influence of an Ohio State offer on the recruiting trail cannot be overstated. Jarrett was notified of the opportunity to be a Buckeye on July 2. Within 10 days, the Buckeyes have surged into his top-4 and are seen as the frontrunners.

If Ohio State ends up getting Jarrett, they will be getting an elite prospect. On the 247sports composite, Jarrett ranks as the No. 45 prospect in the class, No. 9 WR, and the No. 2 recruit in DC.

With the releasing of a top schools list, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Jarrett were to make his decision in the near future. If he does end up being a Buckeye, we’ll have you covered.

A top PG to Columbus?

As the football program seems to be getting commitments left and right, the basketball program has also been on the hunt for top talent, too.

Chris Holtmann has already secured a 2019 commitment from four-star small forward Alonzo Gaffney, who was the No. 1 prospect in Ohio. Now, there’s looks to be a chance that the best player from Iowa could be making the move to Columbus.

Five-star ‘19 prospect DJ Carton (Bettendorf, IA / Bettendorf) released his top-3 list of schools on Sunday evening.

Final 3‼️ pic.twitter.com/VwrRhkKgl1

— DJ Carton (@DJCarton) July 8, 2018

All three schools in the running for the point guard are prominent Big Ten powers, so the Bucks will have their hands full fighting off Indiana and Michigan. The Wolverines, who were the runner-ups in this past season’s NCAA Tournament, are seen as the leaders right now. Twelve predictions have been casted on the 247sports crystal ball, and all but one of them are in favor of UM.

Granted, Carton visited Michigan at the end of June, so that may have swayed some predictions on the recruiting trail. However, if the Buckeyes can get a visit in, that may be enough to win him over. What Holtmann has done with the program in one year’s time is nothing short of spectacular. If he can convince Carton to be part of this program, then the sky’s the limit for what OSU can do in the coming seasons.

No matter where he lands, Carton will have an impact. He’s currently graded by the 247sports composite as the 24th best prospect in the 2019 class and is the ninth best PG. Nearly 20 schools have come knocking with offers, and over half the Big Ten programs showed interest.

Quick Hits

  • Five-star defensive end Zach Harrison is seen as the prospect in the 2020 class. Ohio State is seen as the favorite to land the hometown kid. However, a recent 247sports crystal ball prediction forecasts Michigan as the place Harrison will end up committing to. Is this a cause for concern?

KBD gets two fully-guaranteed seasons on his three-year contract.

Last night, in the first game of his professional career, former Ohio State forward Keita Bates-Diop scored nine points and collected seven rebounds in 31 minutes of action for the Minnesota TimberwolvesLas Vegas Summer League team. Today, it was announced that he had signed his three-year, rookie contract with the NBA team. While the Timberwolves confirmed the signing, they declined to comment on the terms.

Despite being unanimously projected to be a first-round pick, the reigning Big Ten Player of the Year fell to the second half of the second round in last month’s NBA Draft, meaning that the deal that he just signed is likely far less than many anticipated that it would be.

Other than the length, the deal’s specifics have not been announced, however, the first two seasons are fully guaranteed according to The Athletic’s Jon Krawczynski.

Keita Bates-Diop signed his contract with Wolves today. League sources tell @TheAthletic the 2nd RD pick gets a 3-year deal, with the first 2 fully guaranteed

— Jon Krawczynski (@JonKrawczynski) July 7, 2018

John Meyer from SBNation’s Canis Hoopus speculates that the T-wolves will use part of their Mid-Level Exception on the deal, and that the first year could come in at the rookie minimum of $838,464.

Meyer also explains, “By using a portion of the Mid-Level Exception, the Wolves will have full Bird Rights at the end of the contract when KBD hits restricted free agency.”
