Plus, Damon Arnette lands on Top 10 DBs to watch list in 2018.

“The NBA’s 2018 Las Vegas Summer League is set to begin on July 6, just two weeks after the draft, and it’s time to see who will make a Kyle Kuzma-esque impression and steal the show.”

-Matt Ellentuck, SB Nation

Even though there’s over a month before Ohio State is back in session and before sports are back in action, there’s still something to occupy your July: the NBA Summer League. Four former Buckeyes will get their first taste of playing in the pros with a run in the Las Vegas league.

Here’s a look at how to catch some of your favorite Buckeyes over the next few weeks, with the first set of games getting underway tonight.

Byron Mullens (Orlando Magic) @ 5:00 p.m. ET: Nets vs. Magic, NBA TV

Mullens hasn’t worn an Ohio State jersey since the 2008-09 season, and has been trying to find a landing spot in the NBA ever since — that’s nearly a decade! He spent five years playing for teams like OKC and Charlotte, before taking his talents overseas.

He’s bounced around European league’s since 2014, and most recently signed — for the second time — with the Sioux Falls Skyforce of the NBA G League.

Trevor Thompson (Brooklyn Nets) @ 5:00 p.m. ET: Nets vs. Magic, NBA TV

Thompson went undrafted in 2017 and spent time on the 2017 NBA Summer League roster for the Boston Celtics before ultimately landing with the Santa Cruz Warriors of the G League.

He finished his first season with playing time in 38 games (earning two starts) and averaged 11.7 minutes per game. Overall he went 67 of 128 field goal attempts, and a pretty solid 51 of 68 free throws on the year. Thompson also claimed 113 defensive rebounds, 23 blocks, 20 assists and 18 steals — in addition to his 34 turnovers.

Shannon Scott (Charlotte Hornets) @ 5:30 p.m. ET: Thunder vs. Hornets, ESPNU (WatchESPN)

After going undrafted in 2015, Scott bounced around from Summer League to G League teams, and was once again invited to participate in the summer slate this year, this time by the Charlotte Hornets.

He’s been a starter for most of his two seasons in the G League, first with the Raptors 905 and then with the Long Island Nets. In March 2016, Scott was responsible for the first triple-double in Rapotors 905’s history, thanks to a performance that included 24 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists.

Keita Bates-Diop (Minnesota Timberwolves) @ 11:00 p.m. ET: Nuggets vs. Timberwolves, NBA TV

The first Buckeye basketball player to be drafted since 2015, KBD is ready to prove that he should have been a first-round pick. After falling to No. 48 in the NBA Draft last month, the Timberwolves have wasted no time in getting the big man some work, and are expecting him to develop during the Summer League series.

So, while we have a bit before we’re back to covering ourselves in Scarlet and Gray, we can still cheer for some Buckeyes in the meantime.

“If you are an NFL team looking for a help on the back end, chances are that you have spent substantial time watching Ohio State defensive tape over the last few years. The Buckeyes have reloaded in this area with yet another enticing pro prospect.”

-Lance Zierlein on Damon Arnette, NFL.com

Lance Zierlein of NFL.com ranked the Top 10 DBs to watch heading into the 2018 season, and to the surprise of no one, a Buckeye made the list. At this point, it’s no surprise that NFL teams would be keeping a close eye on defensive backs coming out of Ohio State — especially during the Urban Meyer era under now-former assistant coach Kerry Coombs.

While Coombs may now be coaching in the NFL, the pipeline he created from OSU to the pros has yet to simmer down. Arnette looks to be the next guy to keep the #DBU tradition alive (not to mention Kendall Sheffield has a chance at doing the same) and could be another first round draft pick out of OSU.

Zierlein’s scouting report continues, “Arnette is bigger and stronger than his 2017 teammate Denzel Ward, but he lacks Ward’s foot quickness and long speed (most cornerbacks do). Where Arnette shines: his physical play from press coverage and his ability to disrupt the early stages of a route.”

With one more season to go, Arnette will have all eyes on him as games get underway, and will be looking to boost his profile with more NFL scouts paying attention.

“Ohio State director of golf Therese Hession will represent the United States and the Buckeye golf programs when she helps lead the United States team at the 2018 Arnold Palmer Cup this weekend in Évian-les-Bains, France.”

-Ohio State Athletics

Alongside Ryan Hybl of Oklahoma, Hession will coach the American team during the Ryder Cup-style event. Teeing off at Evian Resort Golf Club, this is the first time the competition field will include men’s and women’s collegiate golfers.

The golfers are in good hands under Hession, who has led the Buckeyes for 27 seasons, claiming 10 Big Ten titles, 17 NCAA Championships appearances and 25 NCAA Regionals. She’s been named Big Ten Coach of the Year an incredible seven times and National Coach of the Year twice (1997 by the NGCA; 2014 by Golfweek).

“I am honored and privileged to help lead the U.S. Squad at the 2018 Palmer Cup in France,” Hession said. “The matches should be extremely competitive featuring the best men and women in collegiate golf.”

The Ohio State director was inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2015, and most recently, she led the Buckeyes to the NCAA quarterfinals in 2017.

Hession has a few more reasons to be excited heading into the weekend, with news that four members of the Ohio State women’s golf team were named 2017-18 All-American Scholars by the WGCA. Carrying a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50, Jaclyn Lee, Alanis Sakuma, Adeena Shears, and Rio Watanabe earned the honor, with Lee claiming her third and Watanabe her second WGCA recognition.

Buckeye Bits from the NFL

On Noah Brown and the WR competition in Dallas — Ryan Ratty, Blogging The Boys

“Brown may have a slight advantage given his experience from last year, but his limitations are more due to lack of breakaway speed and suspect route-running. At the age of just 21-years-old, Brown has so far been mainly a blocking WR, but that is a very important position for the Cowboys.”
On John Simon and the LB position for the Colts — Brett Mock, Stampede Blue

“It would also be particularly aided by the coaching staff allowing John Simon to move on from a very difficult transition to defensive end, one where he is outclassed by a number of players on the roster already, and back to a strong side role.”
On how Billy Price and Sam Hubbard improve the Bengals’ roster — John Sheeran, Cincy Jungle

Billy Price doesn’t have to be the second coming of Nick Mangold to be considered an upgrade over Russell Bodine. The praise the coaches had for Price mostly pertained to the intangibles he possesses and the personality that make Price who he is as a student of the game and leader in the locker room.”
On if the Cowboys should sign Johnathan Hankins — Connor Livesay, Blogging The Boys

“Hankins was a constant thorn in the Dallas offense’s side with his domination against the run. Hankins is known for being one of the best run-stuffing defensive tackles in the league using his massive frame and brutal strength to win at the point of attack, and take up space to allow other defensive players to flourish.”

O-H!@denzelward pic.twitter.com/kT6TqXQfvl

— Cleveland Browns (@Browns) July 6, 2018

Interesting dynamics with Browns 1st round picks. 4th pick Denzel Ward has no incentive to sign before 1st pick Baker Mayfield. If Mayfield gets guarantees without offsets, Ward will likely feel he should get the same. 2017 1st overall pick by Browns Myles Garrett has offsets.

Could the Buckeyes be on track to land yet another top prospect to their early 2020 class?

Even on a week that saw Independence Day, you would think Ohio State Buckeyes recruiting news would die down a little bit. However, with The Opening going on in Texas earlier this week, current OSU commits—and even targets—were in full force showing why they are either being considered by Ohio State or are already in the fold. When it comes to Buckeye football recruiting, Urban Meyer and Mark Pantoni, as well as the rest of the coaching staff, have clicked on all cylinders for some time now. One would think the momentum would start to simmer a bit, but the opposite has happened. The current 2019 class is already in the top 10 as far as classes are concerned. Better yet, the current class has less commits in it than any school ranked higher, further cementing that this class when all is said and done is likely a lock to be another top five finish. Looking ahead, 2020 may just be Meyer’s greatest Ohio State class he’s signed—and that is just plain scary.

Sure, let’s add him too

It’s pretty difficult to go through the classes Urban Meyer has signed to Ohio State and pick the best. 2013 probably goes down as the best to date considering the National Championship roster as well as those former players having NFL success, but to be honest, every class is loaded with stellar talent, and that won’t stop any time soon. 2019 is coming along rather nicely, but it’s the future 2020 class that is taking the Buckeye recruiting scene by storm. With only four commits, the rankings and grades for each individual as well as a whole are showing just how off the charts talented this class can and likely will be. With several top players on everyone’s list considering Ohio State, this class really could be one for the ages and give us something special to talk about for years to come.

On Wednesday night, the Buckeyes got some good news. Not out of the usual by any stretch, Ohio State once again found their name on the top schools list for a tremendous prospect in the 2020 class. Down to two schools, Luke Wypler took to his Twitter account to let the recruiting world know that he’s down to Stanford and Ohio State for the college of his choice. A New Jersey native, Luke has a very impressive resume already considering he still has two full seasons of prep football to be played before he signs on the dotted line. A 6-foot-4, 285-pound guard, Wypler is considered by 247sports to be a high four-star, the third best offensive guard in the 2020 class, the second best player in the state for his class, and not to mention the 75th best player in the entire country regardless of position. The accolades are pretty impressive to say the very least.

Final 2... #Gobucks#Fearthetree pic.twitter.com/67VOFPJwcO

— Wypler (@LukeWypler) July 5, 2018

Cutting his list to two schools is also impressive when you consider he has well over 20 offers from the likes of Notre Dame, Michigan, Florida, and many more. Where the recruitment gets a bit interesting though is when you take note that every 247sports crystal ball prediction has been in favor of Ohio State. It’s been said before, but to re-hash: the crystal ball is not a lock, but it also does give some great insight. Mix in the fact that there’s not another prediction for any other program and you have to feel pretty good about Ohio State’s chances in landing yet another monster commitment in their 2020 class. The good news just keeps on coming.

How Ohio State Athletic Director Gene Smith is preparing for the effect of gambling on college sports
Brett Ludwiczak

usa_today_10505893.0.jpg

The recent decision by the U.S. Supreme Court to allow gambling on sports outside of Nevada has college administrators trying to find safeguards.

“It concerns me. It concerns me from the point of view of the athlete — making sure we protect people. My biggest concern is educating, educating, educating, and then putting in firewalls to protect them.”

-Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith on gambling via Bill Rabinowitz, The Columbus Dispatch

In May the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a ban that made sports gambling outside of Nevada unconstitutional. Now college administrators are trying to prepare as best they can to educate and protect student-athletes from the influences of gambling which could arise.

Even before the gambling ban was struck down, there was still plenty of betting going on when it came to college games. The biggest difference now, is it will be more easily accessible to more people. Despite not supporting college sports betting, Smith thinks it is something than can be managed, and the biggest way to do that is to not overreact to the issue.

One idea being tossed around by athletic directors is an injury reporting system with the NCAA. Some coaches around the country like to divulge as little information as possible when it comes to injuries, which gives their opponents even more to prepare for. Smith and some of the other athletic directors around the country feel as if injuries are declared then it could eliminate an area that bettors could exploit when it comes to the point spread.

While gambling scandals are nothing new when it comes to college sports, now with gambling being legalized, it could bring some of those issues back. One area of concern for Smith is the number of prop bets that are available these days. One play that might seem not all that important to some, could swing a prop bet, which is why Smith feels that education of the student-athletes on this issue is so important.

Luckily for Smith, Ohio State’s athletic programs have some of the best staffs in the country working for them, which should help them get a leg up on these issues.

“I believe it is [more likely]. Coach Meyer and J.T. had a really great relationship. He’s a great leader and a great player. Coach Meyer had a lot of trust in J.T., which he should. Now he’s gaining trust in the running backs.”

-Ohio State running back Mike Weber on short-yardage situations via Tony Gerdeman, The-Ozone

Over the last couple years the decision has been easy for Ohio State when they faced third down and a yard or two. Let J.T. Barrett run the ball and move the chains. Now the decision won’t be so easy for head coach Urban Meyer and offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson, as Barrett won’t be lining up under center for the Buckeyes.

Last year against Power 5 competition, Ohio State ran the football on third or fourth down with less than three yards to go on 60 different occasions. Of those 60 times the Buckeyes ran the football, J.T. Barrett was the ball carrier on 28 of the runs. Barrett turned 20 of those 28 runs into first downs, and averaged 4.9 yards per carry on those plays.

Luckily for Ohio State, they have two pretty good running backs who can fill the void left by Barrett in those situations. The favorite to see more carries on third- and fourth-downs is Mike Weber, who picked up nine first downs in the 11 times he carried the ball with less than three yards to go on third or fourth down. Weber averaged 12.3 yards per carry in those situations.

J.K. Dobbins carried the football 15 times on third or fourth down with less than three yards to go, and picked up 11 first downs. While Dobbins didn’t have nearly the average per carry that Weber did in those situations, he still averaged 5.5 yards per carry.

Ohio State can’t go wrong with giving either running back more carries in short-yardage situations, but it feels like Weber will likely get most of those touches. Even though Dobbins does have more elusiveness than Weber, it’s hard to go wrong with the speed and power that the junior running back possesses. If Dobbins and Weber continue to pick up first downs in short-yardage situations like they did last year, it put even more pressure on opposing defense, who will already be tasked with trying to slow down a dynamic Ohio State offense.

“That’s one of those things I’ve picked up since leaving college, with diet being so important. Since I’ve been here, and especially in pre-draft, I’m just trying to pay attention to never eating fried foods and stuff like that. Being smart about when you are taking into your body, because that’s really the key from here on out. That’s really big to me.”

-Former Ohio State defensive end Sam Hubbard via Mike Dyer, WCPO-Cincinnati

Players like Sam Hubbard may have been able to get away with having more of a lax diet in college, but that is an area that can’t be ignored at the professional level. With the best players in the world playing in the NFL, not watching what you eat and taking care of your body could see you in the unemployment line sooner rather than later.

Hubbard has already gotten off to a good start with the Cincinnati Bengals, making yogurt or veggie shakes to help recovery after practice, eating meals with fish or lean white meats and brown rice and veggies, and granola bars before going to sleep at night. Hubbard tries to eat every two to four hours during the day because of how quickly he can burn calories.

Despite being with the Bengals for a short amount of time, Hubbard has already seen some changes. After just a month with the team, Hubbard has already seen his body fat percentage drop. Now Hubbard is trying to gain weight with more starches, carbohydrates, and proteins, but he is trying to do so in a healthier way.

It doesn’t hurt that Cincinnati strength and conditioning coach Chip Morton went to graduate school with Mickey Marotti, so he is familiar with the weight training program Hubbard was put through at Ohio State. With the training base that Hubbard has from Marotti while at Ohio State, along with the attention to detail that Hubbard is getting with the Bengals, it isn’t hard to imagine Hubbard finding plenty of success in the NFL.

A 2020 prospect has the Buckeyes in his top-6.

As we celebrated America’s 242nd anniversary of declaring independence, there was also some positive recruiting news happening for the Ohio State Buckeyes. While some people were out running/walking in 5K’s, grilling up hamburgers and hot dogs, or watching the firework festivities, some recruits put out updates.

Let’s take a look at what happened on the recruiting trail on Independence Day 2018.

Cracking the list for an elite WR

Looking in the not-too-distant future, the Bucks got some good news in their pursuit for a five-star Pennsylvania star. Julian Fleming (Catawissa, PA / Southern Columbia) released his top-6 schools via Twitter on Wednesday—and Ohio State found themselves with elite company.

Top 6‼️ (recruitment still open) pic.twitter.com/EZYpuciSRW

— 0J4 (@julian_040) July 4, 2018

In addition to in-state powerhouse program Penn State, Virginia Tech, USC, Clemson and Georgia join the Big Ten duo in the hunt for Fleming’s commitment.

According to the 247sports composite, the 6-foot-2 wide out is a must-have for any program. He’s graded as the 12th best overall prospect in the ‘20 class, the second highest WR prospect, and the best recruit out of the Keystone State. In 247sports’ own recruiting rankings, Fleming is even higher-ranked overall; the pass-catcher comes in as the No. 2 prospect in the class, and the top WR and Pennsylvania recruit.

Twenty schools have come knocking with offers to Fleming, but it appears that these six will be the ones he will be focusing on. Earlier on July 4, the Florida State Seminoles made an offer to Fleming, but right now, it appears that they are not on his radar. However, he noted in his tweet that his recruitment is still open.

Fleming unofficially visited OSU on June 18, according to 247sports, so the Buckeye coaching staff has at least had a face-to-face. The day after that visit, though, USC sent him an offer—and the Trojans made the cut.

It’s no secret that Ohio State will need receiving depth over the next couple recruiting classes. Five-star Garrett Wilson is already committed in the 2019 class, but if they can add Fleming to the 2020 class, then OSU will have experienced stacked going into the 2020 season and beyond. It will not be an easy task to the get the Pennsylvania native, as the Nittany Lions hold all nine predictions in the 247sports crystal ball.

We’ll definitely keep you posted if any news breaks on Fleming’s recruitment.

The Aggies Prevail

While Ohio State shows up on the radar for Fleming, they didn’t end up as the lone program for a four-star cornerback in the 2019 class.

Yesterday, in a now-deleted tweet, Erick Young announced a top-3 list of USC, Ohio State and Oklahoma. As mentioned in the recruiting roundup by Patrick Mayhorn, Young appeared to have some fun in his recruitment, as the long-time Texas A&M lean committed to the Aggie program.
