Now it’s your turn to pick an Ohio State-inspired name for a pet.

After winning the Big Ten’s Thompson-Randle El Freshman of the Year Award in 2016, Ohio State running back Mike Weber dealt with injuries and a crowded backfield during his sophomore campaign.

So, as he enters his third season on the field for the Buckeyes, he has more than a little pressure on his shoulders to get back to the bulldozing, power running that made him a breakout star as a freshman.

Now, not to add even more stress to his load, a lamb has been named after the Detroit native. Talk about responsibility!

Now, not to nitpick the young man’s fandom, but in my opinion, the best pet names are of the ironic variety; like Bark Twain, Chewbarka, Mr. Meowgi, or Neil Patrick Hamster. So, I probably would have gone with something like “Parris Lambell,” but I’m allergic to everything with fur or feathers, so what do I know?

Anyway, since we are still a few weeks away from the Buckeyes opening up fall camp, what better way to waste some time on a Monday than to pick the “best”— and I use that term very loosely— Ohio State-inspired pet names?

Vote on your favorite below, and feel free to suggest other potential names in the comments below.

A class of 2020 recruit has the Buckeyes in the mix for his commitment.

For the Ohio State Buckeyes, things are looking very good on recruiting trail. One member of the 2020 class committed to OSU over the weekend, and a couple others have the Scarlet and Gray in their top schools list. While Urban Meyer is out trying to build the No. 1 class for ‘20, Chris Holtmann is also making moves in the recruiting world. Let’s take a look at what happened over the weekend.

Down to 4

Looking to stock up on wide receivers, the Bucks made the cut for four-star Rakim Jarrett (Washington, DC / St. John’s College HS) on Sunday evening. Jarrett, on Twitter, teased of a major announcement on Saturday afternoon, and delivered with his top schools list on Sunday evening.

pic.twitter.com/6SiQ0r8Fsq

— Rakim Jarrett (@RakimJarrett) July 8, 2018

Joining the Buckeyes are a trio of college football powerhouses—with one of them being a Big Ten foe. Alabama, Penn State and Florida State all have been trending well with the 6-foot wide out, but, according to the 247sports crystal ball, the Buckeyes seem to be trending the best. All five votes point to OSU being the school Jarrett will choose, and four of those votes have come in after July 4. The influence of an Ohio State offer on the recruiting trail cannot be overstated. Jarrett was notified of the opportunity to be a Buckeye on July 2. Within 10 days, the Buckeyes have surged into his top-4 and are seen as the frontrunners.

If Ohio State ends up getting Jarrett, they will be getting an elite prospect. On the 247sports composite, Jarrett ranks as the No. 45 prospect in the class, No. 9 WR, and the No. 2 recruit in DC.

With the releasing of a top schools list, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Jarrett were to make his decision in the near future. If he does end up being a Buckeye, we’ll have you covered.

A top PG to Columbus?

As the football program seems to be getting commitments left and right, the basketball program has also been on the hunt for top talent, too.

Chris Holtmann has already secured a 2019 commitment from four-star small forward Alonzo Gaffney, who was the No. 1 prospect in Ohio. Now, there’s looks to be a chance that the best player from Iowa could be making the move to Columbus.

Five-star ‘19 prospect DJ Carton (Bettendorf, IA / Bettendorf) released his top-3 list of schools on Sunday evening.

Final 3‼️ pic.twitter.com/VwrRhkKgl1

— DJ Carton (@DJCarton) July 8, 2018

All three schools in the running for the point guard are prominent Big Ten powers, so the Bucks will have their hands full fighting off Indiana and Michigan. The Wolverines, who were the runner-ups in this past season’s NCAA Tournament, are seen as the leaders right now. Twelve predictions have been casted on the 247sports crystal ball, and all but one of them are in favor of UM.

Granted, Carton visited Michigan at the end of June, so that may have swayed some predictions on the recruiting trail. However, if the Buckeyes can get a visit in, that may be enough to win him over. What Holtmann has done with the program in one year’s time is nothing short of spectacular. If he can convince Carton to be part of this program, then the sky’s the limit for what OSU can do in the coming seasons.

No matter where he lands, Carton will have an impact. He’s currently graded by the 247sports composite as the 24th best prospect in the 2019 class and is the ninth best PG. Nearly 20 schools have come knocking with offers, and over half the Big Ten programs showed interest.

Quick Hits

  • Five-star defensive end Zach Harrison is seen as the prospect in the 2020 class. Ohio State is seen as the favorite to land the hometown kid. However, a recent 247sports crystal ball prediction forecasts Michigan as the place Harrison will end up committing to. Is this a cause for concern?

KBD gets two fully-guaranteed seasons on his three-year contract.

Last night, in the first game of his professional career, former Ohio State forward Keita Bates-Diop scored nine points and collected seven rebounds in 31 minutes of action for the Minnesota TimberwolvesLas Vegas Summer League team. Today, it was announced that he had signed his three-year, rookie contract with the NBA team. While the Timberwolves confirmed the signing, they declined to comment on the terms.

Despite being unanimously projected to be a first-round pick, the reigning Big Ten Player of the Year fell to the second half of the second round in last month’s NBA Draft, meaning that the deal that he just signed is likely far less than many anticipated that it would be.

Other than the length, the deal’s specifics have not been announced, however, the first two seasons are fully guaranteed according to The Athletic’s Jon Krawczynski.

Keita Bates-Diop signed his contract with Wolves today. League sources tell @TheAthletic the 2nd RD pick gets a 3-year deal, with the first 2 fully guaranteed

— Jon Krawczynski (@JonKrawczynski) July 7, 2018

John Meyer from SBNation’s Canis Hoopus speculates that the T-wolves will use part of their Mid-Level Exception on the deal, and that the first year could come in at the rookie minimum of $838,464.

Meyer also explains, “By using a portion of the Mid-Level Exception, the Wolves will have full Bird Rights at the end of the contract when KBD hits restricted free agency.”

Whatever KBD signed for, congratulations to him. When you get back to Minnesota, might we suggest The Eater’s “38 Essential Twin Cities Restaurants, Spring 2018”?

Another top lineman is headed to Ohio State.

Several 2020 recruits have talked about a certain buzz around Ohio State over the past few weeks. There’s a feeling among commits and targets that something special might be unfolding in this class for the Buckeyes. It seems like every day that buzz is becoming more prominent, as the sense grows that a legendary class is being built. The Buckeyes took another big step in that direction today, as Luke Wypler joined the class.

Wypler is yet another massive commitment in a class full of big names, with even bigger personalities. The St. Joseph Regional (Montvale, NJ) High School product is one of the country’s best linemen, and he’s been a major Buckeye target for a while now. They offered back in March, hosted Luke in early June, and are extremely excited to have him in the class.

Now, Luke isn’t just a big-time, four-star recruit that Ohio State is bringing in because of his ranking. After watching him extensively, Ohio State identified Wypler as one of the best players in the country, not just one of the top guards. Let’s take a look at what the Buckeyes saw in him, and what you can expect to see when he gets to Columbus.

On the field

The first thing that stands out about Wypler is how big he is. Now, when it comes to linemen, being “big” can mean two things. There are physically imposing, massive maulers, that dominant by being “bigger” than everyone else and erase defenders by being “bigger” than them. The other kind of big is someone who, while obviously very large, isn’t out of shape in any way. They never look sluggish, and are more “big” in the weight room mold than they are massive bodies to block the way.

Wypler is the latter, and that’s exactly how Ohio State likes it. Ohio State doesn’t recruit maulers very often, because Urban Meyer wants his linemen to be able to move well, and it’s very difficult for 6-foot-8, 360 pound tackles to do that. Ohio State wants their linemen between 6-foot-2 and 6-foot-7, while hovering right under 300 pounds. Wypler fits the mold perfectly.

While he plays tackle in high school, he’ll be a guard at the next level. It shouldn’t be a tough move for him, because his greatest skill is his agility. He’s got great footwork, and has no trouble making blocks downfield, either off of a pull-block or just as an adjustment after the initial block.

His quickness is complimented well by a ton of strength. Wypler is a big hitter, and has a tendency to completely take defenders out of rushing plays. His strong arms paired with his constantly churning legs make him a fantastic run blocker, and that’ll be his primary focus in Columbus.

That isn’t to say that he’s not a capable pass blocker as well, because he definitely is. His team passes more than most high schools, and because of that, he has plenty of experience dropping back and absorbing contact, rather than initiating it like he would on a run block. His time spent at tackle will help him a ton in pass protection at the next level, though he may need to get a bit bigger to block big nose-tackles consistently. That’s where Ohio State’s strength program comes in. Wypler being only 16 years old means that he has plenty of growing left to do, and I have no concerns about him not being strong enough.

My only real concerns are with his balance and focus. He plays a bit too high at times, and while he’s able to get away with it in high school, that’ll get him knocked over at the next level. He has to work on his pad level, and that’ll be a big focus for OSU’s offensive line coach Greg Studrawa. The focus issue stems almost entirely from the fact that Wypler is a young athlete. He can get caught up in a big block at times, wanting to make the highlight rather than moving on to another assignment.

Basically, that means that in an effort to drive someone 20 yards out of the play, Wypler is also taking himself out of the play. It’s great to see that effort, but Ohio State would prefer him to take care of his assignment quickly so that he can start blocking downfield on running plays, or help another linemen on passing plays. Running a guy out of the play is good, but knocking your assignment over and being able to move on and block a linebacker to open up the second level is better. He’ll get there.

In the class

Wypler is the fifth member of Ohio State’s 2020 class. He’s the third lineman, along with Paris Johnson Jr. and Jake Wray. Those two will likely end up as the tackles in this class, while Wypler will be one of two or three interior linemen. I don’t think Ohio State wants a full five linemen in 2020 (they don’t need to take a full group in both 2019 and 2020), so Wypler may be the penultimate member of the line class. My guess is that Michigan guard Justin Rogers finishes the class up front.

Wypler committed to Ohio State over 22 other offers, from Florida, Michigan, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State, Stanford, Tennessee and Wisconsin, among others. The primary competition here was from Stanford, though Notre Dame was in the mix for a while as well. Wypler is a very smart kid, and the academics of Stanford really intrigued him.

Ultimately however, Ohio State’s combination of on-the-field success, academics, and location sealed the deal for Wypler. As it has been in so many recruitments, Ohio State’s “Real Life Wednesdays” program may have been the biggest factor here. People underestimate how much the program matters, but it really is a huge part of Ohio State’s recruiting success.

Wypler is yet another big step towards what could be Urban Meyer’s best recruiting class; not just at Ohio State, but of his entire career. The targets left in 2020, and the leadership already committed to Ohio State, could make for a historic class. It’s a good time to be a Buckeye.

You can watch Luke’s highlights below, and read his commitment piece here.

The Buckeyes are off to another BOOOOMing weekend.

The 2020 class is off to an extremely hot start at Ohio State. With more than a year to go before any of these recruits are able to officially sign, the Buckeyes had already landed a top quarterback in Jack Miller, two linemen in Jake Wray and Paris Johnson Jr, and a four-star safety in Lejond Cavazos.

Today, they added yet another commit, as four-star guard Luke Wypler announced his pledge to the Buckeyes.

COMMITTED TO THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY!! #Gobucks #THEOHIOST pic.twitter.com/yawNeZAKmY

— Wypler (@LukeWypler) July 7, 2018

Wypler joins what many think could be the best class in America by the time that Signing Day rolls around in February of 2020. He’s the first guard in the class, as Wray and Johnson both spend most of their time outside, and will likely remain as tackles at Ohio State. At 6-foot-4, 285 pounds, Wypler is the ideal size for a college guard, and has the experience and athleticism to make him one of the most highly touted interior linemen in the class of 2020.

Wypler, a Montvale, NJ native, comes to Ohio State via St. Joseph Regional High School. He currently sits at 75th in the national 247Sports composite rankings, and third among all other guards. His commitment doesn’t move Ohio State above Miami for the top spot in the 247Sports team rankings yet, but he does put them quite a bit closer. With three fewer commits than the Hurricanes, Ohio State is just 40 composite points off of the lead, which could be made up with just one or two big commitments.

Wypler also held offers from Penn State, Michigan, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Stanford, Notre Dame, Florida, Ole Miss, and many others.

Land Grant Holy-Land will have more on this commitment soon. You can view Wypler’s highlights below.
