Injury-after-injury has kept the former second-round pick from finding his spot on the NFL roster.

Expectations were high for wideout Devin Smith in 2015 when he was drafted to the New York Jets out of Ohio State, but the Buckeyes’ go-to deep-threat couldn’t stay healthy enough to contribute at the next level. Just as teams are getting ready for training camp, the Jets decided to release their former second-round pick, according to Adam Schefter.

Jets are releasing former 2015 second-round pick Devin Smith, per source. Smith suffered two torn ACLs and has struggled to recover from them.

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) July 16, 2018

Smith was taken at No. 37 overall by the Jets after winning the inaugural College Football Playoff Championship with the Buckeyes. He earned playing time in 10 games during his rookie season, starting three, and nabbing nine receptions on 28 targets for 115 yards and one score.

The wide receiver’s NFL career started off rocky, with a rib injury just ahead of the regular season causing some concern. He didn’t let it slow him down for the first four weeks of the season, but in Week 8 Smith suffered an ankle injury, followed by a foot injury in Weeks 9 and 12. In Week 15 he was down for good with an torn ACL.

Smith would go on to spend the majority of the 2016 season on the Physically Unable to Perform List as he recovered from his various injuries. He was activated in November, but only saw three targets in the final four games of the season.

Things didn’t go any smoother for the Buckeye as he prepared for the offseason, with Smith suffering his second torn ACL in April 2017, knocking him out for his entire third NFL season.

This marks the first time in Smith’s young career that he’s been a free agent and will get a sense of whether or not teams are willing to take a chance on him given his injury history.

With teams heading into training camp this week through the end of the month, there isn’t a ton of time left to find a team willing to take the gamble and do enough during camp to solidify a spot on the final 53-man roster.

Here’s hoping the Buckeye hasn’t seen his last NFL snap at such a young age.

The Buckeyes basketball program got a whole lot stronger over the weekend.

While you were out enjoying the weekend, you might’ve missed out on your Ohio State recruiting fix.

Don’t worry! Land-Grant Holy Land is here to save the day. Sit back and relax and get caught up with some of the latest news involving the Buckeyes.

OSU lands 5-star point guard

As you may know, Ohio State isn’t just a football school.

Already holding a verbal commitment from four-star Cleveland Heights forward Alonzo Gaffney, Chris Holtmann and the basketball Buckeyes were off to a decent start to their 2019 recruiting class. Now thanks to the weekend commitment of five-star point guard DJ Carton, Ohio State is mentioned among some of the best in the country.

B U C K E Y E N A T I O N⚪pic.twitter.com/A8T26fA7W1

— DJ Carton (@DJCarton) July 14, 2018

With at least one scholarship on the table and Carton, a Bettendorf, Iowa native now in the fold, the Buckeyes are sitting as the fourth rated 2019 recruiting class at the moment.

A top 25 recruit, Carton should add a lot to the Buckeyes on offense and defense once he arrives in Columbus. A scoring threat, and a decent facilitator of the ball, he also isn’t afraid to guard other top notch players when he isn’t trying to lead his team to points.

Averaging 23 points, five rebounds, and three assists a contest, Ohio State isn’t the only program to take a look at Carton, who reportedly sports a near 40-inch vertical. locking in well over a dozen offers, the Buckeyes beat out the likes of Big Ten foes Indiana and Michigan for his services.

Want to know more about the newest Buckeye basketball pledge DJ Carton and what he’ll add to Holtmann’s squad? Land-Grant Holy Land’s Patrick Mayhorn has you covered.

Washington drops top 10

When a highly sought after high school prospect releases his top college list chances are Ohio State might make the cut.

In what is now becoming a near everyday event for the Buckeyes, four-star safety Bryson Washington took to his Twitter page on Saturday to let the world know that he’s taking a good hard look at 10 programs.

Although things could change in the coming months, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Texas, Alabama, Texas A&M, LSU, Georgia, Florida State, Oregon, and UCLA are currently on top for the 6-foot-2, 196-pound class of 2020 standout.

— Bryson Washington (@ChasingDream8) July 13, 2018

As a sophomore at C.E. King in Houston, Washington, the second safety, and 87th overall junior prospect in the country, per the 247Sports Composite, showed on the field why so many college coaches are trying to add him to their future rosters.

An All-State selection, he finished his season off with 56 total tackles, and five interceptions for the Panthers.

MotS&G What to Expect: Linebackers

What to Expect: Linebackers
Trevor Arnold
via our good friends at Men of the Scarlet and Gray
Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

The Ohio State linebackers had some up and down moments during last season. The highlight of last season was the Michigan State game. The low point, sadly, was the game before against the Iowa Hawkeyes who absolutely torched us, and cost us a spot in the College Football Playoffs. A topic I could go on and on about because a certain team played Mercer last year, but I digress.

The 2018 season will feature players that had quite the roll in last season as backups, but played more and more as the season went along. Tuf Borland will most likely be the starting middle linebacker, as he is the best player for the job. However, he is coming off an Achilles injury where he missed all of spring ball. Hopefully, he comes back the same player, or even better than last year because this kid has talent. In the MSU game, he had 11 total tackles with 8 of them being solo and 1 sack.

If Borland can’t go or just loses the starting job, look for Baron Browning to be the next guy up. Browning was the No. 1 linebacker in the 2017 class, and was on the field during special teams last season. I expect Borland and Browning to play a lot this season back and forth, and having two guys with same level of skills is never a bad thing. Browning can also play outside linebacker, so if Borland does come back healthy, expect Browning to be on the field at both middle and outside linebackers.

Justin Hilliard, who lost his starting position to Borland last year, is the older player, but he has dealt with lingering injuries. If Borland or Browning can’t go Hilliard is looking to improve from last season, and the Buckeyes will need him to be his former 5-star self.

Malik Harrison is expected to be the starting Strongside Linebacker. Harrison got in games last year in garbage time, and to give the other guys some rest for a play or two, but he did show what he can do, especially in the MSU game. Dante Booker will most likely be the backup even though he chose to comeback, and forego the NFL Draft. Booker didn’t have the best of season last year, and that wasn’t entirely his fault. He has been injured almost his whole career at Ohio State. He wants to come back and show everyone, including the scouts, what he really can do.

Weakside Linebacker is the big question mark for the Buckeyes. Replacing 3rd round draft pick Jerome Baker is no easy task. But expect Keandre Jones to be the starting linebacker with Pete Werner to back up. Both players have seen plenty of time on special teams, but not much action at the linebacker position. Jones is the the older player which is why I’m giving him the starting job, but Werner and Browning will be coming for the spot.

After the Iowa game, Urban and Greg Schiano made some linebacker changes for the Michigan State, and they payed off big time. Putting in the young guys really helped the Buckeyes defense come alive. I expect this season to be much better at the linebacker position, and they will help get the Buckeyes off the field on the 3rd down plays. The Buckeyes have a history of great linebackers, and this season should be no exception. With 4 and 5 star players all over the field the Buckeyes should have plenty of depth and talents to keep the NFL linebacker talent alive.

Landing the five-star point guard is kind of a big deal

Is everybody enjoying the Chris Holtmann era yet? A little over a year after being hired to take over for Thad Matta at Ohio State, Holtmann has exceeded expectations once again today. After an awe-inspiring first season that saw the Buckeyes return to the NCAA Tournament, finish second in the Big Ten, and produce a Big Ten Player of the Year, the future looked bright.

An excellent 2018 class, headlined by future stars like Luther Muhammad and Jaedon LeDee added more to the hype. Landing five-star Cleveland forward Alonzo Gaffney back in April felt like a sign of things to come in the 2019 class, and today, Holtmann blew the whole damn roof off, as five-star point guard D.J. Carton committed to Ohio State.

We’ll get into what makes Carton so good, and what this means for the future in Columbus, but I think it’s important to reflect on just how fast this has all happened. In July of 2016, Ohio State was coming off of a 21-14 season and a second round NIT loss to Florida. They returned a lot of players, but their recruiting class wasn’t anything special.

In May of 2017, Ohio State was in an even darker place. They’d gone 17-15, held just one commitment in the 2017 class, and had lost a commitment from 2018 five-star Darius Bazley just a month earlier. That was 14 months ago. It took Chris Holtmann 14 months to pull Ohio State up from their worst season in 14 years and back to one of the nation’s most exciting programs.

It may be Carton’s commitment that puts them over the top and returns them to college basketball’s elite class, like they were in 2006 and from 2009 to 2012. A new golden age may be upon us. What does the new face of that movement bring to Columbus?

On the court

Carton is exactly what you’d expect from a modern five-star point guard. He’s a fantastic athlete, with elite quickness, straight-line speed, and an ability to dunk, despite being just 6-foot-1. That athleticism makes him ideal for what Holtmann wants in a point guard. Because of how fast he is, he can blow by defenders and finish at the hoop with ease.

However, Carton isn’t just an offensive player. He’s got great lateral quickness as well, and can stay in front of anybody that he’s guarding. He doesn’t have elite hands, and he’ll never be an Aaron Craft-level defender, but he’ll never be a liability. He’s more than capable of guarding at a Big Ten level, and he has the potential to develop into an elite defender. That’s all OSU needs.

Offensively, it’s a much different story. Carton is one of the best scorers in the country, and will bring a ton of skill and ability to Ohio State. He’s got elite handles, and the explosiveness to make him nearly impossible to guard off of the dribble. Once he gets to the hoop, he’s a great finisher, making acrobatic layups over bigger defenders with ease and consistency.

If finishing isn’t his best ability, passing definitely is. Carton might be as good of a passer as D’Angelo Russell was when he was at Ohio State. He’s capable of throwing great lead passes, can drive and kick with accuracy, and loves running in transition, launching cross-court bounce passes like it’s nothing. He’s a great court general, which Ohio State hasn’t had since Russell.

The only real thing I can find wrong with his offense is his shooting, but even that isn’t a big issue. He’s got a nice stroke, and can knock down threes, he just has some consistency issues. That’ll come with age, and Ohio State doesn’t need him to be a knockdown shooter by any means. I think he’ll hover around 35% from three, and that’s all they need from a point guard.

At 6-foot-1, 189 pounds, Carton’s a bit on the small side, but this isn’t the NBA. I don’t think it’ll be an issue at Ohio State. With how strong he is, and how much intensity he plays with, I think he’ll be more than willing and capable to face off against bigger players, and will likely come out on top against them more often than not.

In the class

Ohio State’s 2019 class could be one of the best in school history. Carton and Gaffney are ranked 21st and 30th respectively at 247Sports, and just those two puts Ohio State at fourth nationally in the team rankings. With one or two more spots still open, this class will get even better, and will almost certainly finish in the top five.

Where do those last commitments come from? Well, the main target left for Ohio State is absolutely Illinois power forward E.J. Liddell. They’re in a battle with Missouri for his pledge, but landing another top player in Carton will go a long way in Liddell’s recruitment. These top recruits all know each other, and playing with other elite prospects is a big deal in college basketball recruiting.

Outside of him, it’s a bit of a blur. If Ohio State does want a fourth man in this class, it’ll probably be a big man, and that could come from a number of guys. Right now, the two most likely seem to be Minnesota forward Zeke Nnaji or Indiana center Trayce Jackson-Davis, though Ohio State doesn’t lead for either at this point.

If they can’t get back into it with either of those guys, they may reevaluate to try to find another big, or they may just roll with three in 2019, if they do end up landing Liddell. Whatever they do, this is going to be a massively important class at Ohio State, and when looking at everyone that’ll be back, it’s not hard to see Ohio State competing for a title in 2019 when Carton and Gaffney arrive.

This is, arguably, the biggest recruit secured in the Chris Holtmann.

The Ohio State Buckeyes basketball program got a big BOOOM on Saturday afternoon as 2019 five-star point guard DJ Carton (Bettendorf, IA / Bettendorf) committed to the program. Carton made the decision known on Twitter.

B U C K E Y E N A T I O N⚪pic.twitter.com/A8T26fA7W1

— DJ Carton (@DJCarton) July 14, 2018

Indiana and Michigan were the other schools in the running for the No. 2 PG in the ‘19 class. Leading up to today’s announcement, it appeared that the Wolverines were the program to beat, as a majority of the 247sports crystal ball predictions seemed to lean toward Carton going to Ann Arbor for his college days.

However, after taking an official visit to OSU early this week, things changed—and Carton felt that OSU was the place for him. With this commitment, the Buckeyes’ 2019 class now have two members: Carton and four-star small forward Alonzo Gaffney.

Carton also held offers from Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa, Xavier, USC, Marquette, Missouri, and more. Carton is a five-star prospect, and the second-rated point guard in the country according to 247Sports’ composite rankings. He is the best player from Iowa in the class, and the 21st-ranked player in the country.

To say this this is a big commitment would be an understatement. Ohio State has been searching for a true 2019 point guard for months now, and they managed to find one of the nation’s best. Pairing Carton with fellow 2019 five-star Alonzo Gaffney will make for one of the most dangerous one-two punches since Jared Sullinger and Aaron Craft were in Columbus.

Land Grant Holy-Land will have more on this commitment soon. You can watch Carton’s highlights below.
