News flash: The Buckeyes are really good at football.

“Good lord, Ohio State is stacked”

-Bill Connelly, SBNation

Ok, I have to admit that as much as I enjoyed the “Moneyball” book, and the shift to analytics-based evaluation that it helped inspire, understanding all of the advanced statistics that have become so en vogue in recent years is not my area of expertise.

Basically, I suck at match.

However, if Bill Connelly says that the advanced metrics indicate that Ohio State is stacked, even my tiny, little, numerically-challenged brain knows that is a big deal.

Connelly has the Buckeyes projected to be No. 1 in his S&P+ rankings, and even considered putting them in a tier by themselves when ranking and categorizing all of the teams in the Big Ten Conference. Connelly notes that while the 2017 OSU offense was strong— seventh in Offensive S&P+ and third in offensive success rate— with a new quarterback in Dwayne Haskins, Urban Meyer (and his two-headed offensive coordinator of Kevin Wilson and Ryan Day) might have to loosen the reigns a bit.

Since J.T. Barrett very rarely made negative plays, the need was never there for him to make the big, exciting ones to compensate. However, with a first-time starter (albeit one that has proven to be immensely talented), there might be a few more turnovers and missteps that require a bit more exciting play-calling.

It also helps that Haskins will have virtually the entire complement of skill players back from last year to help smooth over any rough edges that stick out for the sophomore starter.

On the other side of the ball, things are in a somewhat similar situation. Ohio State’s defense finished eighth and fifth, respectively, the past two seasons in Defensive S&P+, so the foundation is there for another great season in terms of the metrics. However, coordinators Greg Schiano and Alex Grinch will need to find a few more sturdy replacements than the offensive coaches do, thanks to the constant stream of starters from the Buckeye defense to the NFL.

That being typed, OSU has recruited very well in the linebackers and secondary levels, and there are more than enough studs ready to prove their worth once given the chance.

With all of those numbers, returning top-talent, and blue-chip replacements waiting on deck, Connelly has Ohio State projected as the favorite to win every game this season, and only two of their games (on the road against Penn State and Michigan State) are below 74 percent probability. These two are the only games in which the Buckeyes are projected to win by less than 11 points.

Thanks to the B1G East having four teams projected in the top 11 of the S&P+, this translates to 10.4 projected regular season wins for the Buckeyes, while claiming the top overall S&P+ projected ranking (No. 2 on offense and No. 10 on defense).

While we clearly know that college football isn’t played on spreadsheets, what all of Connelly’s numbers and algorithms say is that this should be a really exciting season for Ohio State football.

“Few coaches are as associated with the college spread-to-run offense as Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer. And since the advent of the “shotgun spread” offense over a decade ago, a favorite dichotomy has arisen between “college” and “pro-style” systems.”

-Ross Fulton, Rivals

Land-Grant Holy Land is fortunate to have a number of really great football minds breaking down film for us on a weekly basis during the season. However, until the games kick off, it couldn’t hurt to brush up on some film study from one of the best in the business.

In this first of two columns, Fulton does a deep dive into the fundamentals of Ohio State’s running game. He explains the basics of OSU’s offensive principles not only in how they are employed by the Buckeyes, but how they fit into the larger scope of football strategy.

Fulton also does a tremendous job explaining the techniques and theories behind the basic premises of the schemes. As he notes, the base for Urban Meyer’s offense is (and always has been) the zone read; however, he also explains the run-pass option, gap blocking, and more.

Reading through the fascinating breakdown, the question kept occurring to me was how would this offensive philosophy change with Haskins under center? While he is certainly athletic enough to run when needed, this is the first time since Meyer has been in Columbus that the entire offense will be built around a QB that wasn’t a dominant running threat. Even when Cardale Jones was the starter, the offense was still fundamentally the same as it had been for Braxton Miller and J.T. Barrett; and we saw how that ended up working for Jones.

So, now that the personnel for OSU is slowly moving to a more pro-style scheme under Day, I wonder how Meyer and the Buckeye coaches will be able to modify what is at the core of their philosophy to fit a quarterback that just does things differently.

Obviously figuring that out will be much easier given the return of two fantastic running backs (Mike Weber and J.K. Dobbins) and nearly everyone who caught a pass last season

“Ohio State Athletics paces the Big Ten Conference in number of student-athletes earning B1G Distinguished Scholar recognition for the third straight year as 129 Buckeyes did so for the 2017-18 academic year.”

-Ohio State Athletics

The Big Ten’s Distinguished Scholar Award was established a decade ago to recognize student-athletes who meet a handful of qualifications, including maintaining a 3.7 grade-point average; and for the third year in a row, Ohio State led the conference in honorees, this time with a record-setting 129.

Aided no doubt by the incredible number of varsity teams that OSU fields, 21 Buckeyes posted perfect 4.0 GPAs, including current WNBA player Stephanie Mavunga, who maintained the average while pursuing her master’s degree.

In other OSU academic news, it was also announced that the men’s basketball team earned a National Association of Basketball Coaches Team Academic Excellence Award. To qualify for the award, every player on an NCAA, NAIA and NJCAA team that competes during the season must contribute to a cumulative 3.0 GPA. The only other B1G school to earn the honor was Northwestern. Congratulations to all of Ohio State’s Distinguished Scholars and to the entirety of the men’s basketball team.

Strong finishes from football, and men’s and women’s basketball pushed the Buckeyes past Alabama for the honor.

The Ohio State Buckeyes have a dominant sports program. From football to basketball to hockey, the past year has was successful for the Scarlet and Gray.

CBS Sports looked over the 2017-18 season to determine which program was indeed the best. Lo and behold, OSU ended up as the top college sports program, surging past Alabama, Oklahoma and Michigan in the process.

While football and both basketball programs didn’t bring home national titles, they all had tremendous seasons. Urban Meyer coached the Buckeyes to a 12-2 season, ending with a landslide victory over USC in the Cotton Bowl. On the hardwood, Chris Holtmann took a men’s team that missed the NIT a season ago to the NCAA Tournament; on the women’s side, Kevin McGuff also took the Buckeyes to the NCAA Tournament behind a 28-7 season. Hockey did exceptionally well, with both the men’s and women’s teams making it to the Frozen Four.

On top of the success of the ‘big 3’ sports, wrestling was national runner-ups, men’s volleyball got all the way to the national semifinals, and both the baseball and softball teams made it to the NCAA Tournament.

This wasn’t the first time OSU was named Best in College Sports by CBS. Back in 2015, the Buckeyes took home the honors after a tremendous season that saw the football team win the inaugural College Football Playoff national championship.

Is this the calm before another storm?

For the first time in what feels like months (in reality it’s only been a few weeks), things are relatively quiet on the recruiting front at Ohio State. A flurry of commitments has kept Buckeye fans busy during the long offseason, but after adding Kane Patterson on Monday, things seem to finally be calming down.

While calm times do happen in college football, I wouldn’t take this at face value. Ohio State has a ton of targets set to commit soon, and it feels like we’re on the brink of another huge couple of days in Buckeye recruiting. After landing a whopping nine commitments since June 27, I don’t think we’ll see that much action again this year, but we could be headed towards a similar movement.

Unlike the last couple of weeks, I think a lot of this upcoming action will come from the 2019 class. With 14 commitments in, Ohio State’s 2019 class has been a bit forgotten recently—but that won’t last. Ohio State has nine or 10 more spots still to fill before Signing Day, and they’d like to have just around four spots left by the time the season rolls around. So, who should you be watching out for as a possible commitment soon?

4-star receiver Elijah Higgins: After naming Ohio State in his top seven on Monday, Higgins remains a big target for the Buckeyes. They want four receivers in 2019, and they want Higgins to be one of them. His skillset would be fantastic complimenting Garrett Wilson’s game, and getting him committed would be a huge coup for Meyer, especially with how much Tom Herman wants him.

Higgins was on campus for an official visit in June, and will likely take more officials to his other top schools soon. He doesn’t have a commitment timetable, but the general thought seems to be that once he’s done with his official visits, he’ll commit to his school of choice. That could be as soon as early August.

5-star end Zach Harrison: Bar none the top target left for Ohio State in 2019, the Buckeyes are waiting very anxiously for Harrison’s commitment. The Olentangy Orange star has been on Ohio State’s board for years now, and took the last of his three official visits to Columbus, after seeing Michigan and Penn State.

Unfortunately, that visit didn’t seem to seal the deal, because Zach is still uncommitted. the longer this one goes, the less confident I become in Ohio State being the choice. Michigan is surging here, and where Harrison lands will likely depend on when he makes the choice. He’s said early August in the past, but he may wait until after his senior season. It just depends on when he finds a school he’s fully comfortable with.

4-star receiver Marcus Washington: Washington is scheduled to announce his commitment on his birthday, Aug. 7. There have been some questions about if he’ll actually know his decision, as he may look to move his date back to November or December, but for now, August is the plan.

If that plan holds true, I think he’ll be a Buckeye. he had a great visit on June 22, and the Buckeyes lead right now. Missouri has a chance, but this one is Ohio State’s to lose right now.

4-star receiver Jameson Williams: The chances of this one happening soon may be fading. It seemed like Williams was set to commit on his visit in late June, but when that didn’t happen, it raised some questions. With his Ohio State visit out of the way, Williams has scheduled visits to UCLA and Alabama this fall.

If he commits to Ohio State before then, those visits probably won’t happen. However, if we get to those visits with no commitment, Williams would likely no longer be an option for Ohio State.

4-star 2020 receiver Rakim Jarrett: Of all the names on this list, this is the one that I’d say is the most likely to commit next. Jarrett picked up a Buckeye offer just a few weeks ago, put them in his top four on Sunday, and said he’d be committing soon. All of this happening right after he picked up that offer seems to indicate that the choice is made, and it’s just a matter of time until he announces it.

LGHL Ohio State QB Dwayne Haskins receives high praise from Braxton Miller

Ohio State QB Dwayne Haskins receives high praise from Braxton Miller

usa_today_10299457.0.jpg

Former Buckeye legend Braxton Miller thinks Dwayne Haskins has what it takes to become a Heisman Trophy winner.

“I told him that one day he’s going to win the Heisman. I’ve known Dwayne for two years now. Man, he’s dope, he’s nice. I haven’t thrown with him since last year. But every since he came in, whenever I needed somebody to throw with when J.T. [Barrett] wasn’t there or available, he was always available and always willing to work. He reminds me of myself in a way. He just wanted to go get it.”

- Braxton Miller via Austin Ward, Lettermen Row

Dwayne Haskins has quite a bit of pressure on him this season, entering the year as the unquestioned starting quarterback. But the expectations in Columbus are as high as always, and there’s reason to believe Haskins has all the tools to be the next great player for Ohio State. Former Buckeye quarterback Braxton Miller doesn’t just think Haskins has what it takes to be great, he takes it a step further and thinks Haskins can become the next Buckeye to hoist the Heisman Trophy.

Miller had plenty of nice things to say about the rising sophomore quarterback, including his incredible throwing ability. But Miller also mentioned that Haskins can get the job done from the ground if need be, and that Urban Meyer’s offensive strategies wouldn’t have to change all that much from when he and J.T. Barrett ran the show. Both were much stronger runners compared to Haskins, but Haskins’ arm really opens things up for the offense.

“I still have that chip on my shoulder. After all this stuff that I went through for the past few years, there’s nothing better than to just have that chip on my shoulder.”

- Thayer Munford via Tim Bielik, Cleveland.com

The story of Thayer Munford is one worth reading. In high school, Munford was out of shape, had bad grades, and didn’t hold an offer from his dream school - Ohio State. That all changed thanks to some motivation and help from his high school coach Nate Moore.

Through a lot of late nights studying, and changes to Munford’s diet, he eventually was able to receive that offer from the Buckeyes and is now poised to be Ohio State’s starting left tackle entering the 2018 season.

Munford had a long journey and came to Ohio State with plenty of question marks, but it all worked out in the end. Munford even had a key block in the Ohio State-Michigan game last season, when Isaiah Prince went down with an injury. His pancake block led to a J.T. Barrett touchdown run, putting the Buckeyes on the board and back into the game.

Now he’ll have a chance to start the entire season and continue his incredible story.

“Before I was looking to prove something, show somebody something. Right now, people might be excited. But I’m excited to play with Dave (Lighty) again. That’s what I’m excited about.”

- Greg Oden via Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

Remember that seven-foot center that used to play for Ohio State? Sort of led his team to a national championship game in 2006? Well get ready for Greg Oden to take the court with some of his Buckeye teammates once again. Oden has decided he’ll play in TBT - The Basketball Tournament - and suit up for the Scarlet and Gray Alumni team, which competes for $2 million in the annual tournament.

Last year, Oden was announced to the squad, but didn’t play in any games, but this year will be different. Should the former Buckeyes (which includes Aaron Craft, David Lighty, Jared Sullinger and more) win their first two games to advance to Atlanta, Oden said he will be suiting up and playing.

While Oden doesn’t have any notions of making a comeback to professional basketball, it will still be nice to see him out on the court doing what he loves to do.

There are plenty of highly rated familiar faces in the game this year.

It’s starting to feel a lot like football. Every year, the release of football games (rest in peace, NCAA Football series) signifies that the real game is approaching, and somehow, we’re just a month out from the annual release of EA Sports’ NFL title, Madden. Every year, EA likes to tease the game with different trailers, screenshots, and eventually, player ratings. We got those rankings today, and as per usual, they’re jam packed with Buckeyes.

Leading the way with a 94 rating is Eagles’ safety Malcolm Jenkins. Behind him, Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott has a 92, Jaguars guard Andrew Norwell and Saints receiver Michael Thomas both have a 91. Rounding out the top group, Chargers end Joey Bosa and Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore sit at 90 overall. You can view every Buckeye’s ratings below.
