The Buckeyes’ 2019 class continues to see its stock rise.

Even if it is only July, and it seems that football is way in the future, at Ohio State, there is always something going on. With Big Ten Media days coming soon we know that the season is approaching quickly. Fall camp is set to start soon after Big Ten Media days, and Buckeye Nation is gearing up for the highly anticipated 2018 season. Until then, the staff has the plate full with not only the team’s development, but also recruiting. That’s never going to change as long as Meyer and his staff are at the helm of the Buckeye program. He’s made it more than clear year after year that if you can’t recruit, you can’t coach at Ohio State. Fortunately for fans, this staff has no problem with recruiting as they continue to be one of the best recruiting programs in the country.

Go ahead and add that 5th star big fella

The offensive line and more specifically the center position at Ohio State has seen some serious success in the past few seasons. With NFL teams drafting guys such as Pat Elflein and Billy Price who both are not only back-to-back first round draft picks, but also back-to-back Rimington Trophy award winners, the Buckeyes have more examples than just these two to make a serious recruiting pitch and it’s paid off big time for Meyer and company. In the 2019 class, no recruit may be more impressive than Georgia native, Harry Miller. A monster sized prospect, at 6-foot-4, 310 pounds, Harry with his stature alone would turn some heads. Add that to the fact that he may be the best recruit you could get means Ohio State struck gold when they landed Harry. A class valedictorian, Miller is a prized recruit both on and off the field.

With an impressive camp at Nike’s “The Opening” in Texas recently, Miller saw his ranking continue to rise. When he committed to Ohio State on June 10, Harry was listed as a very highly graded 4-star. Yesterday however, saw that 4-star status increase to a 5-star for 247 sports and that bodes well for the prospective Ohio State’s 2019 center. With a new star status, Miller is still the second best center prospect in the country for 2019 as well as the 32nd best recruit nationally for his class. Miller plans to graduate on time in June of 2019 eliminating the chance to enroll early, but with his high skill-set and intelligence, it’s becoming more and more clear that getting to campus after the spring season won’t really put him too far behind. The next Rimington Award winner may be headed to Columbus once again.

Some light shed on 2019 TE’s?

In every recruiting cycle there’s just some positions that you have to add depth too. For instance the quarterback and on both offensive and defensive lines, depth is crucial to the success of your future seasons. One position Ohio State recruited perfectly in 2018 was at the tight-end when Jeremy Ruckert signed with the Buckeyes. With all of the negative press the Buckeyes sometimes get concerning the position and mostly because of how tight-ends are used in Columbus, that didn’t have Ruckert worried when he picked his school of choice.

When you take the Ohio State tight-ends as group there’s really not a real concern for adding major depth. Ruckert as we previously mentioned just arrived to campus and when you consider Luke Farrell, Jake Hausmann, and Rashod Berry too, these are all guys with multiple years of eligibility still left on the shelf. A solid room for position coach, Kevin Wilson who is a true developer of the position and one would have to come to the conclusion Ohio State is set with their stockpiling of tight-ends for at least the next recruiting class. However, the recruitment of guys such as Brenton Strange brings the thought that the Buckeyes may in fact be in the market for another tight-end in 2019 even if the depth on campus is already very solid.

Strange is certainly thought to be the guy if the above information is indeed correct. Camping at Ohio State and visiting multiple times already this summer, it looked as if the Strange relationship was definitely commit worthy. Add in the in-state Erick All situation where a Buckeye offer never took place ending in a Michigan commitment, and you’d almost bank on Brenton Strange to the Buckeyes. This still could be true, but recent news has come out in the past few days that another prospect may be joining the headlines. Tennessee native, Cormontae Hamilton recently had a 247sports crystal ball prediction in favor of Ohio State. The interesting note here is the prediction was put in by a Tennessee insider so his wisdom has to be somewhat close to the situation.

June was a big month for Cormontae as he attended both camps at Alabama and Ohio State. Earning offers from both, Hamilton’s stock is sure to increase considering two of the prolific programs in college football both felt he was worthy of an offer. Time will tell how this plays out, but it could almost be a situation where the first tight-end to commit is the one that’s taken by the staff. Strange has been in this race a bit longer, but with the Cormontae development, anything is possible.

MotS&G What to Expect: Defensive Line

What to Expect: Defensive Line
Trevor Arnold
via our good friends at Men of the Scarlet and Gray
Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

Ohio State is expected to remain one of the top defensive lines in the country. Even with three seniors leaving, Jayln Holmes, Tracey Sprinkle and Tyquan Lewis, and one early departure, Sam Hubbard, Ohio State has raw talent. The group is young and looking to make a name for themselves with hard footsteps to follow.

Headlined by Nick Bosa at defensive end. Bosa is looking to improve his 8.5 sacks and 19 solo sacks a year ago. He is already dropping jaws at his stellar performances and wants to continue his and his family legacy at Ohio State. In my opinion, Bosa will do just that. As he had to share snaps last year with second-round draft pick, Tyquan Lewis, Bosa will get plenty of playing time this season, and earn his top 5 draft pick.

On the other side from Bosa is another familiar name, Chase Young. Young saw playing time last year, but really only in garbage time. With so many older, more experienced players in front of him, it was hard to get him in. However, going into his sophomore year Young will get a chance to really show off his talents. Young has all the makings of being a top ten draft pick, and this year is the start of it. Splitting the snaps with Young and Bosa will be Johnathon Cooper, a redshirt freshman, and Jashon Cornell, a redshirt sophomore. Cooper is the third defensive end and will get the bulk of the playing time alongside Bosa and Young. Cornell can earn significant playing time if he shows up in camp and on the field.

The middle guys are the big question here. Dre’mont Jones and Robert Landers saw playing time last year and most likely will be the two starters at the defensive tackle positions. However, Antwuan Jackson is a transfer from Auburn. Jackson was going to commit to Ohio State or Auburn back in 2015 but chose Auburn at the time. Now in 2018, Jackson is where he belongs and will have a huge part on our defensive line. Haskell Garrett and Davon Hamilton are also “backups.” The coaching staff is loving the depth at the defensive line position and all these players could earn significant time this year. The coaching staff also loved Tommy Togiai the true freshman who had a great spring and is hoping to get in the rotation.

What I am expecting this year is the defensive line to continue dominating like in years past. The only real problem Ohio State has right now is creating enough game time to get all these players in. Ohio State has recruited well at the defensive end position ever since Urban got into Columbus, and with Larry Johnson at the helm the only thing stopping these players from making a name for themselves is themselves. Even with all the talent that has left in the last few years, the Buckeyes just keep on reloading.

With the college football season just about a month and a half away, the sports book has released their conference champion odds.

Big Ten championship odds via Bovada:

Ohio St 3/2
Wisconsin 14/5
Michigan 11/2
Penn State 6/1
MSU 10/1
Iowa 40/1
Nebraska 40/1
Northwestern 50/1
Purdue 80/1
Minnesota 90/1
Indiana 250/1
Maryland 250/1
Illinois 800/1
Rutgers 800/1

— Kevin McGuire (@KevinOnCFB) July 12, 2018

Not that this will be much of a surprise to anyone, but Ohio State is the favorite to win the Big Ten per odds realized today by Bovada. The Buckeyes open with 3/2 odds to win the Big Ten this year, while Wisconsin sits with 14/5 odds and Michigan has 11/2 odds.

The Buckeyes are also a heavy favorite to win the Big Ten East, with Bovada placing 21/20 odds on Ohio State. Michigan and Penn State both sit behind the Buckeyes with 7/2 odds to win the division. Michigan State was given 11/2 odds to win the division title before the odds are raised considerably, with Indiana and Maryland sitting at 100/1 and Rutgers at 300/1.

For as much of a favorite as Ohio State is in the Big Ten East, Wisconsin is an even heavier favorite in the Big Ten West, with the Badgers being given 4/9 odds to reach the Big Ten Championship Game. There should be healthy competition for second place in the Big Ten West though, with Iowa, Nebraska, Northwestern, Minnesota, and Purdue all being given between 10/1 odds to 14/1 odds.

If you are the ultimate gambler, you could roll the dice on Illinois or Rutgers to win the Big Ten at 800/1 odds. Or you could just light your money on fire, which would probably bring more you more enjoyment.

“I have a passion for this university like no one I know. While I want my legacy to be that guy on the bench that had a lot of fun and was charismatic and everyone in the stands knew him not because he was a good basketball player but because he was a good person, I want to win a Big Ten Championship this year.

Ohio State guard Joey Lane via James Grega, Eleven Warriors

The most popular Buckeye on the Ohio State basketball team might just be one who rarely sees the floor. Former walk-on Joey Lane has been on the court for just 50 minutes and scored 21 points since coming to Columbus in 2015, but the energy and passion for the team and school is what resonates with fans.

This year will mark the third and final year that Lane is on scholarship at Ohio State, and while he toyed with the idea of moving on to another school as a graduate transfer, much like his good friend Andrew Dakich did when he came to Ohio State from Michigan as a graduate transfer. The success of Ohio State in Chris Holtmann’s first season as head coach erased any of the doubts Lane had about staying in Columbus, as he has a bit of unfinished business with the Buckeyes.

Lane decided to return to Ohio State to try and help the team win their first Big Ten title since the 2011-12 season, when they shared the regular season title with Michigan and Michigan State. While Lane might not see much time on the floor for the Buckeyes this year, there are no doubts that the leadership he will take on in practice and on the bench will be a huge part to any of Ohio State basketball’s success this season.

Ohio State wrestling added the fourth recruit to their 2019 recruiting class when Tyler Stein gave his verbal commitment to the Buckeyes. Stein joins Jordan and Jacob Decatur of Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy and Genoa’s Dylan D’Emilio in the 2019 recruiting class.

The 220-pound Stein finished his junior season at 46-3 and was Ohio’s Division II state champion at 220 lbs. Stein was recently ranked 11th in the country among high school wrestlers at 220 lbs by FloWrestling.

Next year, Stein will join Chase Singletary, who will try and fill the void this year left by Kyle Snyder, Gary Traub, and Kevin Snyder at heavyweight on Ohio State’s roster. Stein committed to Ohio State over Iowa State, West Virginia, American University, and the U.S. Naval Academy.

“I am really excited for Matt to join our coaching staff. His passion for this university, knowledge for the game and ability to communicate and relate to the players will be a great asset. Matt’s skill compliment me and this coaching staff.”

Ohio State baseball coach Greg Beals on new assistant coach Matt Angle

On Wednesday, Ohio State baseball coach Greg Beals announced the addition of Matt Angle to the Ohio State baseball coaching staff as an assistant coach. Angle is no stranger to the Ohio State program, as he played for the Buckeyes from 2005-07, and was a volunteer video coordinator the last four seasons.

Angle was a two-time All-Big Ten selection and was Ohio State’s team captain in 2007. During his time at Ohio State, Angle’s .351 batting average was the 14th best in school history, and his 60 stolen bases were third-most. With Angle as part of their team, Ohio State made NCAA Regional appearances in both 2005 and 2007.

Following his time at Ohio State, Angle was drafted in the seventh round by the Baltimore Orioles, and played nine seasons of professional baseball with the Orioles, Los Angeles Dodgers, Miami Marlins, and Oakland Athletics. Angle recorded 11 stolen bases in 31 games in the big leagues, and registered a home run and seven RBIs in 79 at-bats.

LGHL Why J.K. Dobbins and Mike Weber need each other

Why J.K. Dobbins and Mike Weber need each other
Chad Peltier

Dobbins may be a dark horse Heisman contender, but Mike Weber is a perfect, and necessary, compliment

If you were like me, you didn’t really know what to expect from J.K. Dobbins before last season started. Dobbins was a highly rated recruit — actually Meyer’s highest-rated pure running back, ahead of both Ezekiel Elliott and Curtis Samuel — but he was also injured for his senior season. Classified as an all-purpose back, it also wasn’t clear to me whether he might eventually move to H-back like Samuel.

But it was difficult to suppress the hype after his first game in a Buckeye uniform. Against Indiana, with Mike Weber sitting out, Dobbins ran for 181 yards on a season-high 29 carries. Dobbins’ running style was different than that of anyone from 2016. His lateral quickness and jump cuts gave Ohio State some explosive potential at running back that they really didn’t have in 2016. Curtis Samuel was explosive, but he wasn’t a full time running back, and the 2016 run game ranked just 84th in rushing IsoPPP.

Mike Weber was also solid in his first year as a starter in 2016, averaging six yards a carry and crossing the 1,000 yard threshold, but he was more of an efficiency runner averaging 5.6 highlight yards per opportunity. Efficiency is the most critical goal for the offense, so that’s no slight at that team’s Weber/Barrett/Samuel tandem, but Dobbins showed some promise of big play ability without a big dropoff in efficiency.

The run game improved in 2017, finishing 2nd in the country in rushing S&P+ and jumping to 32nd in rushing IsoPPP. Dobbins finished with over 1,400 yards as a freshman, supplanting the Weber in the process.

Dobbins freshman season has led to some Heisman talk during the offseason, with some sports books giving him 20/1 odds, tied for 8th.

But for as good as Dobbins was last season, and will be in 2018, the Ohio State run game will benefit exponentially from having the Dobbins-Weber 1-2 punch. Kevin Wilson sums this up in the tweet below, which Dobbins retweeted:

#TouchDownTuesday - 1000 Yd Rusher #19 - @Jkdobbins22 - Set the @OhioStateFB Frosh Rushing Record with 1538 Yds Averaging 7.1 per Carry!! Legit Vision & Lateral Movement - 2018 OL & 1-2 Punch with JK & @mikeweberjr - #LetsGo - Teamwork & Chemistry - #ChaseGreatness #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/uECP6Zw2ZF

— Kevin Wilson (@OSUCoachKDub) July 10, 2018

Dobbins’ primary strengths were his vision and lateral movement last season, which are top of the line, but he can still work on his top-end speed and strength, where Weber may have a slight edge. While both backs blended efficiency and explosiveness last season, Dobbins tended towards explosiveness while Weber was the more efficient back, as the charts below show.

Opportunity rate and highlight yards

First, opportunity rate, which measures runs of 5+ yards (efficiency), and highlight yards per opportunity, which averages yardage on only carries of 5+ yards (explosiveness):

HLO_OR_OSU.JPG

This graph shows the division clearly — Weber had rock-solid efficiency last season, gaining 5+ yards on 46.5% of his runs, but averaged roughly two yards per carry less than Dobbins on those 5+ yard runs.

For some comparison, Weber’s 5-yard carry efficiency was better than Zeke’s in 2015 (which was an even 45%). Of course, these averages don’t account for game situation or opponent. Forty-one of Weber’s 101 carries were in a three-game stretch of Rutgers, Maryland, and Nebraska, and Weber’s two 100-yard games were against Illinois and Michigan State (another 20 carries), so those games certainly influence his efficiency numbers.

But the numbers still allow us to make comparisons with Dobbins, because he also played in those easier games too. Dobbins was significantly less efficient, but he was also far more explosive than Weber; 7.7 highlight yards per opportunity is outstanding, topping Zeke’s 2015 average of 6.0 highlight yards per opportunity.

You can make a decent comparison with Weber’s redshirt freshman season in 2016 too. Then, Weber averaged 5.6 highlight yards per opportunity, which is basically equivalent to his 2017 average, but Weber was also significantly less efficient than he was last year — 42.9%, which is basically equal to Dobbins’ 2017 average.

So last season’s run game improved because it had a more efficient Weber along with an explosive Dobbins.

Marginal efficiency and explosiveness

The second chart shows the same concepts — efficiency on the x-axis and explosiveness on the y-axis, but with new metrics: marginal efficiency and explosiveness.

ME_ME_OSU_V2.JPG

Marginal efficiency and explosiveness are neat because they allow for better individual player statistics based on expected performance for each play’s down, distance, and yard line. Marginal efficiency looks at actual vs. expected success rate, while marginal explosiveness looks at actual vs. expected IsoPPP.

Broadly, this chart tells a similar story about Weber and Dobbins — Weber was more efficient than Dobbins, but Dobbins was more explosive. But it also provides some additional information too.

2017 national marginal efficiency and explosiveness averages were 1.3% and -.06, respectively. So both Dobbins and Weber were more efficient than the average college running back would be expected to be in each down, distance, and yard line, but Weber was actually slightly less explosive than average, while Dobbins was significantly more so.

You can see the difference in explosiveness in their rate of explosive carries, too. Weber had a 10+ yard run on 11.9% of his carries, while Dobbins got a 10+ yard run on nearly a fifth of his runs — 19.6% (a difference of 7.7%).

That’s not to say that Weber doesn’t have an explosive ability. He was certainly slowed by injuries, especially during the first part of the season, and he showed some breakaway speed against Michigan State and Michigan especially. In fact, on really long runs of 20+ yards, the two backs’ averages are much more similar — Dobbins at 8.2% and Weber at 5.9%.

Looking to 2018

So now we can project forward into 2018.

The big thing is that, given similar offensive line play (which is far from a guarantee!), it’s fair to assume that Dobbins will be at least a little more efficient as a sophomore. He’ll have had a full year+ in a college weight training program and be another year removed from his high school injury. Also, Weber made a similar jump after starting as a freshman.

Second, it’s maybe a little too simplistic to say that one back is “thunder” and the other is “lightning”, because both backs are efficient, and Weber showed some “lightning” potential towards the end of last season. But yeah, that basic comparison makes sense.

Third, Bill’s Ohio State season preview also gives us new success rate numbers for both backs. Weber actually had a higher success rate than Dobbins, which isn’t surprising given his higher opportunity rate — 58.4% compared to Dobbins’ 52.1%. Just another indicator to not take Weber for granted.

Fourth, with fewer quarterback carries expected in 2018, it will be interesting to see how this affects how defenses defend against both backs. Will there be more non-read running plays (with different blocking as a result)? Or can Haskins effectively use RPOs to keep defenses from keying on the running backs during read plays? That question, along with Haskins overall passing accuracy, could go a long way in determining the Buckeyes’ ceiling this season.

Finally, the Ohio State run game as a whole benefits significantly by having both backs divvy up the carries. Yes, Dobbins may have higher upside, but unless he shows significantly higher efficiency levels, Weber’s consistent 5-yard runs are huge. It’s fair to assume that Dobbins’ likelihood of breaking an explosive run decreases as he gets more tired throughout a game; rotating with Weber (though not necessarily an even split of carries!) keeps both backs fresher.

There are plenty of highly rated familiar faces in the game this year.

It’s starting to feel a lot like football. Every year, the release of football games (rest in peace, NCAA Football series) signifies that the real game is approaching, and somehow, we’re just a month out from the annual release of EA Sports’ NFL title, Madden. Every year, EA likes to tease the game with different trailers, screenshots, and eventually, player ratings. We got those rankings today, and as per usual, they’re jam packed with Buckeyes.

Leading the way with a 94 rating is Eagles’ safety Malcolm Jenkins. Behind him, Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott has a 92, Jaguars guard Andrew Norwell and Saints receiver Michael Thomas both have a 91. Rounding out the top group, Chargers end Joey Bosa and Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore sit at 90 overall. You can view every Buckeye’s ratings below.

In the 2014 World Games, 2 Buckeyes left with medals. Here’s hoping for some more hardware.

It might technically be the offseason for college sports, but that just means that some of the Ohio State student-athletes have an opportunity to compete internationally in their various sports. The 2018 FIL World Lacrosse Championships gets underway on Thursday, July 12 and five Buckeyes (past and present) will compete on the World stage.

The World Games are taking place in Netanya, Israel, with the first matchup featuring a Buckeye kicking off at 9:30 a.m. with an Israel v. Jamaica showdown on ESPNU.

None of the competitors will suit up for Team USA, but four other countries will have some Scarlet and Gray representation, including Canada (Tre LeClaire, Jake Withers), Israel (Ryan Hunter), Philippines (Mario Ventiquattro), and Puerto Rico (Ricky Pages).

Good luck to these five #Buckeyes as they represent the Scarlet and Gray at the upcoming @2018WorldLax.

The rest of the Buckeyes will play their first matches on Friday, July 13 starting in the late-morning. All matches can be streamed via ESPN+.

  • Puerto Rico v. Wales @ 11:45 a.m. ET
  • Canada v. England @ 2 p.m. ET
  • Philippines v. Czech Republic @ 2:45 p.m. ET

If you are wondering why Ricky Pages is playing for Puerto Rico over the United States, it boils down to an injury and family. According to US Lacrosse Magazine:

“Another former Cannon, Ricky Pages, is also making a return to competition, playing for Puerto Rico. Like Seibald, Pages was not born in Puerto Rico, but he is of Puerto Rican descent, as his grandfather was born there. He was referred to the national team management by Major League Lacrosse, even though he had retired from the league in 2013 due to a torn ACL, MCL, and meniscus.

Getting to play with Puerto Rico lacrosse was a great honor for Pages who said it gives him an opportunity to return to competitive lacrosse and to honor his mother.”

The 2018 tournament marks the second straight World Games that Ohio State has had multiple representatives; in 2014, Buckeye Jesse King won a gold medal with Team Canada, and Buckeye Kevin Buchanan brought home silver as a member of Team USA.

However, 2019 Ohio State cornerback recruiting is on-going too. The Buckeyes have a commitment from Jordan Battle who is expected to play cornerback at Ohio State, and though Bryson Shaw is a talented safety, he could play cornerback for the Buckeyes.

If Carton commits to the Buckeyes, this may be the biggest signing yet in the Chris Holtmann era.

It’s been a pretty good week in the world of Ohio State Buckeyes athletics. On the football front, another commitment was sealed up on Tuesday when Kane Patterson made it known that he wanted to be a member of the Scarlet and Gray. Then, on Wednesday, CBS unveiled its ‘Best in College Sports’ award for the 2017-18 season—and OSU took home that honor.

But Wednesday also brought some good news on the recruiting trail.

A 5-star arrival

It was mentioned on Monday that five-star point guard DJ Carton (Bettendorf, IA / Bettendorf) listed a top three of Michigan, Indiana and Ohio State. The Wolverines are seen as the favorite—landing a consensus on the 247sports crystal ball. Even though all 12 of those predictions think John Beilein’s program will be the one that Carton commits to, you can’t count out the Buckeyes.

After taking official visits to Indiana and UM in June, Carton made the trek to Columbus for an official visit to see what Chris Holtmann and the Buckeye program are all about.

Columbus official visit‼️

— DJ Carton (@DJCarton) July 11, 2018

It can’t be repeated enough: A Carton commitment to OSU would be a game changer. He’s slated as the 21st best prospect in his class, the second best PG, and the best recruit out of Iowa. If Alonzo Gaffney and DJ Carton are the key components of the 2019 recruiting class, combined with experienced upperclassman and Holtmann and the helm, then it wouldn’t be too wild to think Ohio State has a real shot for a national title in 2020.

What the basketball Buckeyes have going for them is the fact that they are part of The Ohio State University, and that Holtmann proved that he can turn the program around in a short time—and get guys to the NBA Draft. The final year of the Thad Matta era saw the wheels basically fall off the wagon, as the team missed the NCAA Tournament and NIT, and saw a mass exodus of talent transfer out. Holtmann exceeded expectations last year by advancing to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament, with the cherry on top being Keita Bates-Diop getting drafted to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Michigan has a stronger case for on-court production, as Beilein just led the Wolverines to another Final Four and had one of his former players (Moritz Wagner) get drafted to the Los Angeles Lakers. Indiana missed expectations last season in Archie Miller’s first year in charge, but he’s turned things around on the recruiting trail—and the Hoosiers appear to be growing confidence in the eyes of Vegas for a title run this season.

Either way, once this visit to OSU ends, Carton’s decision may not take long. All three of the schools have had Carton on campus, so they’ve each laid out how he fits into their respective program. Does it help that Ohio State is the last of the three for a visit? That remains to be seen. But the Buckeyes have a chance at landing a five-star talent—so expect an all out effort from Holtmann and the staff to secure his commitment.

Looking into the crystal ball

While the football team is still keeping an eye out for more recruiting commitments, some recruiting experts took to the 247sports crystal ball to cast updates. Good news for OSU: a handful of analysts have a 2019 defensive tackle trending toward the Scarlet and Gray.

Three-star D’Von Ellies (Owings Mills, MD / McDonogh School) is that prospect. He’s graded by the 247sports composite as the 414th best in the class, 27th best DT, and the seventh best recruit out of Maryland. Don’t let the three-star status fool you; over 20 programs have made offers, including West Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wisconsin and Nebraska. Additionally, the 6-foot-2, 280-pounder will take part in the 2019 Polynesian Bowl.

There is still plenty of time left in his recruitment, but it’s always good to see OSU trending well in the pursuit for the stars of tomorrow.
