Also, what is Chris Holtmann hoping to get out of the basketball team’s trip to Spain?

“Heading into 2018, it is entirely possible that Urban Meyer and his team will not be on the outside, but could be very much in the thick of the College Football Playoff discussion. Athlon Sports has Ohio State ranked fourth as the college football season gets ever so closer to starting.”

-Chip Minnich, Athlon Sports & Life

In breaking down the Buckeyes, Minnich gives three reasons why OSU might make the College Football Playoff, and three reasons why they might not. The three reasons why they will are exactly the types of things that a team would want to build a season upon; talent, schedule, and coaching. Of course anytime a talented team with top-level coaches has a schedule that sets up for a strong run, that’s a good thing.

However, the three reasons that he gives for the Buckeyes not making the CFP might also be good things for OSU, because, frankly, they’re all pretty weak. Now, I’m not criticizing Minnich, it’s just difficult to look at this Ohio State team and pinpoint multiple areas of concrete concern.

Instead, Minnich has to search for weakness in the ever exciting “what if?” game. First, he opines that perhaps the Buckeyes could fall into a similar trap as they did in 2015. He compares new quarterback Dwayne Haskins to fellow strong-armed, not-J.T. Barrett QB, Cardale Jones, and says that there is a possibility that head coach Urban Meyer will buck the wishes of his co-offensive coordinators Kevin Wilson and Ryan Day (more specifically Day), and force Haskins to run the ball more than his specific skill-set would dictate.

Now look, we’ve seen some pretty suspect play-calling decisions over the years from Meyer— thinking of one rather big one from that 2015 season—, but if our No. 1 concern going into the season is this, I feel pretty good.

Minnich stretches and says that perhaps the team’s lesser experienced players won’t jell, or that key injuries could pop up and derail the season. Sure. That can literally happen in every season to every team. So, in relying on one, or both, of these as major issues that could legitimately derail the Buckeyes’ season must mean there’s just not much else of substance out there.

So, of course, this doesn’t mean that the Buckeyes are destined for their third trip to the College Football Playoffs, but it does not not mean that.

“However, that dream for Holtmann remained, and in his second season with the Buckeyes, his first full summer with the team, he will take the Ohio State men’s basketball team on a 10-day trip to Spain.”

-Colin Gay, The Lantern

A little more than a year ago, Chris Holtmann was preparing to take his Butler basketball team on a summer training trip to Spain. And while the Bulldogs did go to Spain last summer, Holtmann went to Columbus instead.

So, as he sets his sights on his second season as the head coach for Ohio State, Holtmann is finally going to get his trip to Spain, albeit a year later than originally planned. The Buckeyes will head to the Iberian Peninsula in early-August for a 10-day trip that will be focused on bonding together a young, inexperienced team that will be relying on a ton of new talent beginning this fall.

“When you have a group that is relatively new... it’s better because they really do spend concentrated time together and we get to learn more about them,” Holtmann said according to The Lantern. “We will be put into some difficult game situations there because the competition there has been typically pretty good. So that will be good. We will be able to see how our guys respond to those situations.”

The Buckeyes will be playing professional-level talent during their trip to Spain as they try to find the right mix to account for the losses of Keita Bates-Diop, Jae’Sean Tate, Kam Williams, and Andrew Dakich.

With four freshman and a graduate-transfer joining the team this season (not to mention Florida State transfer CJ Walker, who has to sit out this season before becoming eligible in 2019-20), there will be a lot of learning that has to be done if the basketball Buckeyes want to repeat the surprising success that they had last year.

“I think, perception wise, we will try to be real and try to hopefully reach the potential for this group,” Holtmann said. “We are so anxious to see what that is going to look like because we don’t know what it is going to look like.”

My Zach Smith story will be updated soon on https://t.co/jFONLC1Ub1. I spoke with Smith's lawyer, who said Smith was not arrested and that the issue was whether Smith was allowed to drop off his son at his ex-wife's home. There was no altercation involved. The case was continued.

— Bill Rabinowitz (@brdispatch) July 18, 2018

Ohio State wide-receiver coach Zack Smith was in Delaware County court today to answer a charge of criminal trespass. Little was known about the incident leading up to today, other than that it occurred on May 12, and that his ex-wife was listed as the victim on the police report.

According to Rabinowitz, it appears to have been a disagreement over visitation protocol. Since the case was continued, we will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.

MotS&G What to Expect: Secondary

What to Expect: Secondary
Trevor Arnold
via our good friends at Men of the Scarlet and Gray
Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

The Ohio State Buckeyes will have some real experience at the cornerback position. Kendall Sheffield will look to on a good season last year, but not the season most expected the former 5-star, Alabama transfer to have. Sheffield is looking to be the next first-round pick out of Ohio State at the cornerback position. I expect him to have the breakout season he wants to achieve. I am going to the guess the Junior will have at least 3 interceptions this year.

On the other side of the field will most likely be Damon Arnette. Arnette started last year, so this is a no surprise he will be the starter this year. Splitting carries is Jeffrey Okudauh. Okudah got the starting job for the Cotton Bowl last year after Denzel Ward chose not to play in the risk of injury before the 2018 NFL Draft. The coaching staff is high on Okudah and I’m expecting him to have a huge season. I wouldn’t be surprised if Okudah didn’t get the starting job at some point in the season, but I’m giving the job to Sheffield and Arnette do to their experience already. The next in line player is Shaun Wade. Another 5-star player. Wade will be a big key for the Buckeyes, especially if one of our other cornerbacks go down with an injury. Ohio State shouldn’t miss a beat though. Wade has been committed to being a Buckeye since 2015, and is ready to show Buckeye Nation what he can do.

Jordan Fuller should return as one of the starting safeties. Fuller had a good year last year, and I’m expecting him to have another good year this year. The big question mark for the Buckeye Secondary is the other safety. I’m expecting it to be Isiah Pryor who had playing time last year, but not in any real meaningful time. The safety position is the only real place where the Buckeyes don’t have real depth. Josh Proctor is coming in this year, but he will be a true freshman. They also have Brendon White who has only played in 1 game against Rutgers, where the Buckeyes won 56-0. Shaun Wade may move to the safety position if need be this year since the Buckeyes have 3 reliable corners, but hopefully Fuller and Proctor can stay healthy throughout the year.

The Buckeyes will also miss hype-man Kerry Combs, who left the program to become the secondary coach for the Tennessee Titans. the Buckeyes are bringing back Taver Johnson who coached the Buckeyes in 2007-2011 with Jim Tressel. Johnson has coached talent before including Malcolm Jenkins and Kurt Coleman. I expect the Buckeyes secondary to be the same secondary that has been sending cornerbacks and safeties to the NFL year after year.

Multiple lawsuits filed against Ohio State over sexual abuse accusations

A total of 5 former wrestlers filed a pair of suits this week.

In recent months, The Ohio State University and its athletic department have been hit with a number of shocking accusations of sexual abuse and molestation. These accusations have led to three separate lawsuits, including two filed by former OSU wrestlers in the last two days.

The wrestling suits center around alleged abuse at the hands of former university physician Richard Strauss, who passed away in 2005. In a suit filed on Monday, four former wrestlers are suing the school, not only because they claim that they were “sexually assaulted, battered, molested, and/or harassed” in the 1980s and 90s, but also because they claim that former athletic director Andy Geiger and former wrestling coach Russell Hellickson had “actual and/or constructive notice” of the allegations, but failed to act, violating the students’ Title IX protections.

According to CNN, Geiger met with two wrestlers during the 1994-95 season who complained about “voyeuristic and lewd conduct of men in the locker room and sauna.” The suit claims that while the former AD said that he would look into the situation, nothing was ever done. The suit seeks compensation for Title IX and civil rights due process violations.

A second, separate lawsuit was filed on Tuesday, which alleges that Strauss posed “substantial risk of sexual abuse, harassment and molestation to the young male student-patients who sought treatment through OSU.”

The plaintiff in this suit was a wrestler at Ohio State from 1982-1984 and claims that he was sexually harassed and abused during physical examinations by the doctor. Neither Geiger, nor Hellickson are named in this suit.

On Tuesday night, the university said in a statement to the media, that, as they have been since accusations resurfaced earlier this year, they are “actively committed to uncovering what may have happened and what university leaders at the time may have known... [Ohio State is] aware of reports that individuals at the university did not respond appropriately during that era. These allegations are troubling and are a critical focus of the current investigation.”

United States congressman Jim Jordan, a former Ohio State assistant wrestling coach, has been accused of not acting when concerns were raised about Strauss’ behavior, but neither suit names him as a defendant. Jordan has denied having any knowledge of abuse committed against his athletes.

Ohio State is also facing a third lawsuit over alleged sexual abuse at the hands of William Bohonyi, a former coach with the Ohio State University Diving Club, which provides diving lessons to aspiring collegiate and Olympic divers.

According to CNN, Bohonyi is accused of forcing a diver at Indiana University to perform sex acts on him in 2009 before he came to Columbus, and then similarly with a 16-year-old diver in 2014, who was a member of the Ohio State University Diving Club. The suit names Bohonyi, USA Diving, and the OSU Diving Club as defendants. The university is being accused of not properly responding to accusations.

In the meantime, we took a look at what some of our Big Ten brethren from the SB Nation network are talking about this week as we all get ready for the lead up to the season.

Sometimes no news is good news, but it never stays quiet for long...

Adam McLean was once Maryland’s top recruit. Now he has the chance to live up to that billing. — Ryan Connors

“As a sophomore, though, McLean cracked the rotation at nose tackle. He played in nine games and had his first start against Michigan in November. By the time Maryland’s spring practice ended, he was atop our projected depth chart at nose tackle. That’s not a guarantee of anything, but it’s a good sign.”
Michigan Wolverines (via Maize n Brew)

Breaking down Michigan’s path to a College Football Playoff berth — Rian Ratnavale

“In all likelihood, the path to winning the Big Ten East will go through Columbus and Ohio State. Sure, Michigan hung tough with the Buckeyes despite some horrendous quarterback play. And sure, Michigan likely won’t have to deal with that as much this season. Regardless, Ohio State is the favorite in the Big Ten for a reason, and its defensive line vs. the Wolverines’ offensive line is as big a mismatch as Michigan will see all season.”
Michigan State Spartans (via The Only Colors)

Ranking Mark Dantonio’s 100 wins — Matt Sheehan

“There’s some debate about this — how all of Dantonio’s 100 wins at MSU stack up against each other.

Well, we’re giving it our best shot this summer by going through all the victories for MSU that our head coach has delivered.”

How Should Penn State Use Micah Parsons In 2018? — Marty Leap

“There are freakish athletic beasts and then there is Micah Parsons. On the football field Parsons is big, fast, and violent. To put it in James Franklin speak, Parsons is a game wrecker on the defensive side of the ball, and he has already earned the renowned #11.”

Minnesota Football Recruiting: Three-star running back Cameron Wiley commits to the Gophers — GopherNation

“Wiley is the 20th commitment to this 2019 recruiting class and is almost certainly the final take at running back. Treyson Potts is also coming into the 2019 class as a RB, but Potts may also end up as more of a slot receiver type of a player. Could Maxwell Lorca-Lloyd be headed to Columbus?

After being relatively quiet for the past few months after landing Alonzo Gaffney, the Ohio State Buckeyes basketball program was back in the news this past week. They picked up a commitment from five-star point guard D.J. Carton, moving their 2019 class into the top five of the team rankings, and giving Chris Holtmann his second five-star commitment at Ohio State.

It appears that the Buckeyes weren’t ready to be out of the news quite yet, because on late Monday night, they made another big move, extending an offer to Massachusetts power forward Maxwell Lorca-Lloyd.

2019 Northfield Mount Hermon (MA) F Maxwell Lorca-Lloyd has received an offer from Ohio State.

— Verbal Commits (@VerbalCommits) July 17, 2018

The Lorca-Lloyd offer is big for a few reasons, the biggest being that Ohio State is still in need of a 2019 big—and he may be their solution. At 6-foot-9, 205 pounds, Lorca-Lloyd looks and plays a lot like the modern stretch four, which Ohio State has lacked in years past. I don’t think I’ll fully believe it until he visits Columbus, but Maxwell does seem to be a legitimate option for the Buckeyes.

The second biggest implication is how it impacts a bit more of a highly touted target, in Illinois power forward E.J. Liddell. Liddell is the biggest target remaining for the Buckeyes, and they’d love to pair him with Carton and Gaffney. I don’t think that this offer is meant to replace Liddell, and will serve likely as a backup plan if they don’t land him.

Incoming boom?

There had been some questions in recent weeks about when St. Louis wide receiver Marcus Washington would be announcing his commitment. He was scheduled to commit on his birthday, Aug. 7, for months now, but it seemed like he was considering moving it back, after visits several schools this summer (Ohio State was one of them). On Monday night however, he set the record straight.

Commitment video ideas & commitment edits? It’s bout that time August 7th I’m back on

— Marcus Washington (@_MarcusW11) July 17, 2018

Washington is the 143rd ranked player in the 247Sports composite rankings, and the 25th best receiver. He recently took a pretty sizeable tumble in some rankings, but it’s nothing Ohio State is too concerned about. He’s still a take for the Buckeyes, and all things indicate that Ohio State will be the choice.

Copycat?

In case the recent offer wasn’t enough, Chris Holtmann made some more news today, when he made an announcement that should sound pretty familiar to anyone that follows Buckeye football closely.

Chris Holtmann said he has adopted Urban Meyer’s Real Life Wednesday program, with his own spin on it. Holtmann said he calls it “Beyond Hoops.”

— James Grega Jr. (@JGrega11) July 17, 2018

The “Real Life Wednesday” program has been a massive success for Meyer and the football program, and there’s no doubt that Holtmann has talked with him about how to implement it successfully. The program has helped Ohio State football tremendously, both in recruiting and in the development of their players as people, and it’s not hard to see why Holtmann wants to replicate it.

Running a future preparation program has become pretty common in college football, but I haven’t seen it a ton in college basketball. If it’s implemented properly, this could be a big deal for Ohio State’s development and their recruiting. Having seen Holtmann work in the past, it’s not hard to imagine him having lots of success with this.

With all of the talent the Buckeyes have, finding time for every player can be a challenge.

“That’s critical, because the Buckeyes have to manage the future of the roster while simultaneously squeezing all it can out of the limited time it has left with Bosa along with the expectation that Young will be gone after the 2019 season.”

- Austin Ward, Lettermen Row

Ohio State defensive line and assistant head coach Larry Johnson has to be pleased with the NCAA. The decision to change the rules on redshirts will no doubt help Johnson’s ability to grow and develop a lot of the talent coming into Columbus with more time to do so. The rule, which was put into place this offseason, allows players to play in four games before the coaching staff has to make a decision on whether to redshirt the player or not.

So for players coming in that aren’t sure-fire starters from the jump, it allows time for experience and to see what they’re capable of—without giving up a year of eligibility.

For a defensive line as deep and talented as the Buckeyes have, the new rule is a godsend. Ward goes into a deeper dive in terms of which players this benefits the most, but to throw out a name, Tyreke Smith should be one to watch. Ohio State can be patient with him or decide that he’s simply too ready to not be on the field this season.

“[Top 50 Ohio State football players for 2018] No. 7: Michael Jordan

- Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

The folks over at Cleveland.com are breaking down their top 50 Ohio State football players for the upcoming season and the list continued on with offensive lineman Michael Jordan.

Jordan made the list at 7th overall, which is a big step up for him from last season, where he was ranked 19th overall. Jordan came to Columbus in 2016 and started right away, helping anchor the middle of that offensive line and hasn’t really looked back. He didn’t come into the program with any really insane hype, it sort of just blossomed into a solid work effort and he’s taken full advantage. He’s highly-touted among coaches however, and his solid play is huge in terms of being reliable at all times.

Jordan usually manages to stay healthy and is poised for a big season as he might arguably be the best offensive lineman the Buckeyes have entering 2018.

“[Top 16 college football programs since 2010] 2. Ohio State”

- Bill Bender, Sporting News

The folks over at Sporting News put together a list of the top 16 college football programs since 2010 as the decade reaches its last legs. The list was favorable to Ohio State, who finished second only to Alabama. The Buckeyes under Urban Meyer have compiled a 73-8 record over the past six seasons, and it had not been for the transition year when Jim Tressel resigned and Luke Fickell took over, Ohio State might even have a better case for the top spot.

The Buckeyes have won two Big Ten championships under Meyer, and won their division in 2012 (but were banned from participating in any postseason games). Meyer also brought a national championship to Columbus in 2014, and Ohio State has made the College Football Playoff two times in its four-year history.

Other teams on the list following Ohio State were Clemson, Florida State, Oklahoma, LSU, Stanford, Oregon, Auburn, and Wisconsin to round out the top 10.

Wait, Media Days are next week? That means the season’s almost here, right?

With SEC and Big XII Media Days already underway, on Monday, Ohio State announced the three players that would be accompanying head coach Urban Meyer to Chicago next week for the Big Ten edition on Monday and Tuesday, July 23 and 24.

The Buckeyes in attendance at the Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile will be H-back Parris Campbell, offensive tackle Isaiah Prince, and defensive tackle Dre’Mont Jones.

Campbell and Prince are both seniors, while Jones is a junior. In addition to these players representing the team in Chicago, it is also likely that they will be included in the 2018 slate of OSU captains.

Last season, Tyquan Lewis, Billy Price, and Chris Worley made the trip to media days, and all three were among the nine players that were able to wear the metaphorical “C” on their uniforms.

For the second year in a row, the Buckeyes will not be bringing a quarterback to media days, but that actually appears to be a trend throughout the conference. Of the 14 teams in the league, only five will be bringing QBs, although Purdue is apparently bringing two. The signal-callers in Chicago will be Michigan State’s Brian Lewerke, Penn State’s Trace McSorley, Iowa’s Nate Stanley, Northwestern’s Clayton Thorson, and Purdue’s David Blough and Elijah Sindelar.

The Buckeyes are hoping it can overtake the top spot in the race for safety Chris Thompson Jr.

The Ohio State Buckeyes have already compiled an impressive five commitments already in the 2020 recruiting class. The haul has the Buckeyes placed at No. 2 nationally in the 247Sports Class Rankings and in the lead in the Big Ten.

Among the short list of commits in the class is four-star safety commit Lejond Cavazos (Bradenton, FL / IMG Acadamy) and the Buckeyes appear to be keen on adding another safety to go along with Cavazos.

The addition may not become official for some time, as there is still a lot of time before high school seniors in the 2020 class have to sign on the dotted line, however, it looks like the Buckeyes have targeted four-star safety Chris Thompson Jr. (Duncanville, TX / Duncanville)

Ohio State offered Thompson a scholarship to play for the University on May 1, right around the time Thompson’s recruitment started to gain steam. The Buckeyes were one of many schools to offer him in the spring, but they haven’t got lost in the shuffle either.

Thompson spoke with Nick Krueger of Rivals.com regarding his recruitment and where teams were sitting. Ohio State was one of those teams he spoke about and it appears that they could one day lead in his recruitment.

“[Ohio State] also told me they’re looking me as a leader in the 2020 class and they like my physical play,” Thompson said to Krueger in regards of Ohio State. “I have a feeling when we get to September they’ll be one of the teams really trying to take the lead in my recruitment.”

Thompson is a four-star prospect and is ranked No. 131 nationally and is the No. 5 S in his class according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Currently, it is believed that Texas is the favorite to land him, but he said himself that it is too early in his recruitment to list a leader. However, Texas A&M has also been gaining momentum as of late.

We will learn more when he starts taking visits to schools outside of his home state, which has become a must for Ohio State if they want to remain in the running. Thompson’s recruitment will only get more crowded from here so the Buckeyes will need to get him to Columbus if they are serious about getting a commitment from him.

Quick Hit:

  • Ohio State’s top recruiter could in fact be someone not yet officially apart of the organization. Five-star commit in 2020 Paris Johnson Jr. has quickly been recruiting other members in his class to join him in Columbus, most recently with five-star CB Elias Ricks.
