The Buckeyes are still in the mix for one of the top 2019 athletes in Texas.

Did you miss out on your Ohio State recruiting fix over the weekend? Don’t worry, that’s why Land-Grant Holy Land is here!

Powell sets commitment date, names leaders

With plans to shut down his college football recruitment on Aug. 13, three-star athlete Peyton Powell took to his Twitter page to reassure that and his final 10 schools on Friday.

Trimming his list down from over 20 full rides, Ohio State, TCU, Baylor, Texas Tech, Ole Miss, Arkansas, Oklahoma State, Texas, Illinois, and the University of Virginia have made the latest cut for the 6-foot-2, 182-pound Odessa, Texas native.

Heard all of the talking, now it’s quiet , now it’s shush .. pic.twitter.com/A4IRoY1BML

— [P] (@PPowell_) July 20, 2018

Although Powell, the 38th athlete and 449th overall prospect in the class of 2019, according to the 247Sports Composite, is a standout on offense for Permian High, accounting for over 2,000 all-purpose yards and 25 total touchdowns as a junior, he will more than likely make the switch to defense if he ends up in Columbus.

Looked by many around the recruiting scene as a near lock to wear the Scarlet and Gray on the college level after the Buckeyes knocked his recent official visit out of the park, Powell could potentially add another solid athlete who would end up in Ohio State’s silver bullet secondary joining the likes of fellow 2019 recruits Ronnie Hickman, Bryson Shaw, and Jordan Battle.

Will Peyton Powell commit to the Buckeyes in the coming weeks? We don’t have much longer to find out. Stick with Land-Grant Holy Land for the latest.

5-star PG wants to visit OSU

The Buckeyes might’ve just landed class of 2019 five-star point guard DJ Carton, but that doesn’t mean underclassmen guards are done giving Ohio State a closer look. From the sound of things, one will be in Columbus in the coming months.

Per Sean Bock of 247Sports, 2020 point guard Jalen Suggs lists OSU among the programs he’s hoping to check out in person in the fall.

2020 five-star PG Jalen Suggs said he's looking to visit Iowa, Ohio State, Duke, North Carolina, and Kansas in the fall. pic.twitter.com/CaGsqG3UWn

— Sean Bock (@SBock247) July 19, 2018

Suggs, a four-star prospect from Minnehaha Academy-Upper School in Minneapolis, Minnesota, has his fair share of Big Ten programs actively recruiting him. Ohio State currently finds themselves up against foes such as Iowa, Nebraska, and his home-state Minnesota Gophers for the 6-foot-5, 185-pounder.

Quick Hits

  • Five-star class of 2020 cornerback Elias Ricks will reportedly visit Ohio State next weekend. Ricks, a Mater Dei (CA) product, has yet to lock in an offer from Urban Meyer, and crew, but does hold opportunities at over 25 programs including Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, Michigan, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, and Oregon.
  • Out on the road watching recruits in AAU action, four-star 2019 small forward Patrick WIlliams was among the prospects the Buckeyes took a look at over the weekend. Williams, a 6-foot-7 Charlotte, NC native, made the trek to the Ohio State University campus last month for an unofficial visit.

Jared Sullinger continues to impose his will on TBT competition with an epic double-double.

After falling in double-overtime in last year’s semifinals of The Basketball Tournament, this year’s incarnation of Team Scarlet & Gray seems intent on improving upon their 2017 finish, as they move into the Super 16 with a hard-fought, 82-73 win on Sunday over the predominantly Texas Tech alumni team, the No. 9 Matadors. In front of a pro-Ohio State crowd at Capital University, the S&G squad overcame a deficit for most of the first half to move one step closer to claiming the $2 million, winner-take-all prize.

David Lighty opened the scoring with a corner three after an Aaron Craft steal. Early on, the Matadors looked to get physical with S&G, a fact that would impact the game later on. After a couple of fouls, John Roberson got a steal from Craft, which led to a three-on-one layup for J.J. Avila. Following an Avila triple and a fast-break layup (off of another Craft turnover) for Karl Cochran, S&G head coach Scoonie Penn called timeout with the de facto home team trailing 10-3 after an early flurry by the Matadors.

Out of the timeout, Craft zipped through the lane and found Jared Sullinger in the corner, who showed his improved shooting touch and hit a three-pointer. On the subsequent possession, William Buford connected on the third S&G triple from the same spot, but Avila made another three to keep the Matadors up 15-9.

— TBT (@thetournament) July 22, 2018

The practically three-pointer-only offense of Scarlet & Gray continued as Northern Illinois alum Leon Rodgers hit his first attempt to get the former Buckeyes within two. However, at the end of the first quarter, the Matadors led Scarlet & Gray, 22-18.

Through the early minutes of the second corner, the Matadors continued to blister the nets hitting on 2⁄3 of their shots to take a 29-20 lead. After another timeout, Penn had his team focus on taking the ball inside, resulting in three consecutive possessions where Sullinger and Rodgers combined for six made free throws, to get the score to 31-26 in favor of the Matadors.

For most of the first half, the Bexley crowd was in shock as the Big Ten’s all-time leading three-point shooter Jon Diebler was ice cold. The scoring machine was 0 for his first four— including three attempts from downtown— and missed his first of two from the charity stripe.

However, after a block on the defensive end by Lighty, Diebler couldn’t maintain a handle on the Sullinger outlet, but he stuck with the play and found Lighty streaking for the hoop and the harm that got S&G within one, 31-30.

— TBT (@thetournament) July 22, 2018

After being fouled on what would have been an incredible spinning assist, Craft hit a pair of free throws to give the former Buckeyes a 34-33 lead, their first since the game’s opening basket.

Now down 37-34, Sullinger went to the floor unsuccessfully attempting to corral a loose ball. As he stood up, with Quincy Diggs standing over him, Sullinger gave the defender a shoulder. In response, Diggs retaliated with a pointed push to Sully’s neck. The altercation resulted in a technical foul on Sullinger, and Diggs was hit with a flagrant 2, resulting in his ejection.

Diebler and John Roberson exchanged pairs of free throws for the fouls, and Craft hit a jumper to close out the half, pulling Scarlet & Gray within a single point, 39-38.

In the first two quarters, the Matadors hit 14 of their 26 attempts (53.8%), while the Scarlet and Gray werte only 11-for-34 (32.4%). The Matadors were also aided by the fact that they went 5-7 (71.4%) from beyond the arc, while the former Buckeyes were just 4-13 (30.8%).

The Matadors had two players in double figures— Avila (13) and Roberson (10). Sullinger led the S&G with nine, while Craft and Lighty each had eight.

The Scarlet & Gray took the lead on a beautiful entry pass from Buford to Sullinger. Then on the next possession, Lighty found Buford for a three to give the “home” team a 45-41 lead.

The action was not as crisp for S&G on Sunday as it was in their opening round game against the West Virginia Wildcats, but their talent spelled the difference in the comeback. Sullinger hit three straight buckets for the Scarlet & Gray, to put them up 51-46. Lighty assisted on two of Sully’s baskets.

— TBT (@thetournament) July 22, 2018

With 3:14 left in the third quarter, Diebler finally connected from the floor, hitting a three from the left side of the arc. A few possessions later, Craft found Diebler from deep, giving S&G the 60-54 lead.

However, the Matadors came roaring back to close out the half. After a Craft turnover with 00:07 in the period, Karl Cochran hit a deep three-pointer to give the ninth-seed the 61-60 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

In the final period, Sullinger continued to flex his considerable muscle and talent, collecting eight points in the first three minutes of the quarter. Capped by a Craft layup, S&G raced out to a 9-1 run to retake the lead at 69-62.

Though Sullinger has been one of the best players on the court in the first two rounds of TBT 2018, it is safe to say that he will not have the same impact next weekend, as he will be skipping the games on Friday and Sunday (should they get there) in Atlanta to get married.

However, the former Buckeye big man will be replaced by an even bigger former Buckeye big man as current student assistant on Chris Holtmann’s coaching staff Greg Oden will suit up to fill in for Sully.

Sully is IN HIS BAG and the @ScarletGrayTBT crowd/bench is LOVING it!! #TBT2018 pic.twitter.com/wKGnKmxyPZ

— TBT (@thetournament) July 22, 2018

In an effort to increase the defensive intensity, Penn inserted former East Tennessee guard Courtney Pigram. His presence, coupled with Craft’s, led to a number of easy opportunities for S&G.

With 3:57 remaining, the Elam Ending target score was set at 82 with S&G up 75-70. The unusual end-of-game rules eliminate the obnoxious fouling in the closing minutes. If you are unfamiliar with how it works:

“Under the rule, at the first dead ball after the four minute mark in the fourth quarter, the game clock shuts off. A Target Score is set by adding seven to the leading team’s score. The first team to reach the Target Score wins.” More on TBT using the Elam Ending.

Following a Sullinger miss, Craft dished to Diebler who hit from way downtown to increase the advantage to 78-70.

On Friday, July 27 at 9:00 p.m. EDT, Team Scarlet & Gray will face the winner of No. 4 Big X and No. 12 Primetime Players in Atlanta, Ga. Big X is made up of former Big Ten players, including recent addition to the Ohio State coaching staff Andrew Dakich. Primetime Players and Big X will tip off on Sunday at 4:00 p.m.

The Ohio State alumni beat the West Virginia Wildcats in their quest for $2 million.

For a Buckeye basketball fan, Saturday’s first round game for Team Scarlet & Gray in the 2018 The Basketball Tournament was as close to going back in time as is currently scientifically possible. With a roster comprised of some of the best OSU hoop stars from the past decade or so, the top-seeded team in the Midwest region blitzed the No. 17 seed West Virginia Wildcats, 99-68, on their quest to secure the $2 million, winner-take-all prize.

The Wildcats defeated the Charlotte Chess Center 114-87 on Friday night to earn the honor to play against Columbus’ favorite sons. With current (Micah Potter, C.J. Jackson, Andre Wesson, and Joey Lane) and former (Michael Redd and Clark Kellogg) Buckeyes in the arena, the Nuthouse student section getting the crowd amped, former coach Thad Matta in attendance, and the Voice of the Buckeyes Paul Keels on play-by-play, it is difficult to imagine a better way for OSU faithful to spend a summer afternoon as they await the start of fall football camp.

It was like old times early on as Jared Sullinger hit a turn-around jumper from the block, Aaron Craft hit a three-pointer, and Dallas Lauderdale paced the Scarlet & Gray to an early 7-0 lead.

Ryan Taylor got the West Virginia Wildcats on the board with just over five minutes left in the first quarter, but on the next trip down the floor, David Lighty got the S&G scoring again to put the de facto home team up 7-2.

As Team Scarlet & Gray’s head coach Scoonie Penn made some substitutions, the Wildcats’ Ed Henry hit a bucket to cut the S&G lead to five, but n the next trip down the floor, “BJ” Byron Mullens found a cutting Talor Battle driving through the lane to put S&G up 16-9.

From there the Big Ten’s all-time leading three-point scorer Jon Diebler hit his first triple of the 2018 TBT to give the “home” squad a 19-11 lead.

At the end of the first quarter, Scarlet and Gray held a 21-14 advantage having shot 52.9 percent from the floor, while the Wildcats only completed a quarter of their attempts.

Early in the second quarter, the Wildcats made the mistake of leaving Sullinger open from downtown on consecutive possessions, and the former first-round pick hit a pair of three-pointers to put S&G up 29-17.

Sullinger is making the most of this weekend’s games, because should S&G advance, Sully will have to miss the next weekend’s games, as he will be getting married. However, he will be replaced on the roster by another all-time Buckeye great Greg Oden.

With 4:30 left in the second quarter, Craft spun towards the baseline and found Lauderdale who slammed it home. Then, on the next possession, Lighty found the big man who laid it in to give S&G a 38-21 lead.

As the former Buckeyes continued to pad their lead with halftime approaching, Mullens decided to pull up early in a possession from way downtown and banked it home. On the subsequent trip, former Nittany Lion Battle hit a three for Scarlet & Gray to put them up 54-28.

Is Byron Mullens even IN the arena on this three?! @ScarletGrayTBT #TBT2018 pic.twitter.com/xl29tyxssN

— TBT (@thetournament) July 21, 2018

At halftime, the home team held a commanding 55-30 advantage. Sullinger had 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field, while Battle was a perfect 4-for-4 en route to his 11 points.

With S&G’s lead hovering around 20 in the third quarter, the tenacious defense that got them the advantage started to get a little lax. However, one of the few non-Buckeyes on S&G’s roster Battle got things back on track with another three-pointer, pushing the lead back to 64-43.

Then with 2:16 left in the third quarter, an outlet-pass found Battle alone in the front court, and rather than taking the easy layup, he used the backboard to pass it to Mullens who enthusiastically slammed it home and give S&G a 70-45 lead.

This season, TBT is employing the Elam Ending score system, which is designed to prevent the tedious, foul-heavy endings to most basketball games. At the first stoppage after the four-minute mark in the fourth quarter, the goal score is determined by adding 7 points to the score of the team that’s in the lead. From there, the first team to get there, wins.

With just under seven minutes to play, former Buckeye Evan Ravenel slammed it home, Northern Illinois alum Leon Rodgers hit a triple, and William Buford got a put-back to keep the Wildcats at bay.

With 3:57 left, Penn called a timeout to activate the Elam Ending, with a 98-point target set.

Team Scarlet & Gray, with assistant coach Evan Turner, will take on the Texas Tech-based Matadors tomorrow at 2 p.m. ET, which will be broadcast on the ESPN family of networks.

Earlier in the day fourth-seeded Big X, a team comprised of former Big Ten players, beat No. 13 Chattanooga, 81-79. Big X includes former Buckeye Andrew Dakich who finished the game three points and seven assists. His former OSU teammate Jae’Sean Tate is on the team’s roster, but he did not play in their first round game.
