Not a lot of specificity, but nice to know things are going well.

After nearly two weeks of a media blackout surrounding the Ohio State Buckeyes football program, thanks to the ongoing investigation into how head coach Urban Meyer handled accusations of domestic violence against former wide receivers coach Zach Smith, interim head coach Ryan Day provided an update halfway through fall camp on Friday afternoon.

pic.twitter.com/DkoupVMQRN

— Ryan Day (@ryandaytime) August 17, 2018

Overall, Day notes that fans should be proud of how the players and coaches have used the difficult first two weeks of camp forge “together as a team.” He also goes on to talk about how the coaches are focused on getting the most out of the players, and praised the eight new players who have already had the black stripes removed from their helmets; Taron Vincent, Teradja Mitchell, Dallas Gant, Tate Duarte, Brian Sneed, Kory Curtis, Chris Olave, and Amari McMahon.

From there, Day broke down each of the nine position groups. Starting first with the quarterbacks, the interim head coach noted how young the group is, and noted that they collectively have big shows to fill with J.T. Barrett now in the NFL.

He said that Dwayne Haskins and Tate Martell are taking the majority of the practice snaps as Matthew Baldwin is still a few weeks from being 100 percent healthy.

Day goes on to praise the work ethic of running backs J.K. Dobbins and Mike Weber, and says that young backs Master Teague and Brian Snead have “both shown flashes of brilliance.”

The coach doesn’t give nearly the level of specificity about the position battles that most fans would like, but he did make it sound like things were progressing well.

Day also notes that the “camp” part of the fall ends on Saturday, and the following two weeks will get the team into their regular schedule, with classes starting on Tuesday. Other than thanking the administration and media, Day finished the update writing, “We are honored to be Buckeyes and can’t wait to see and you in the ‘Shoe on September 1!”

The Buckeyes took a break from training camp to enjoy themselves a bit — a they did just that.

So, it all started early on Thursday with interim head coach Ryan Day making a deal with the Ohio State football players. If Sean Neuernberger made a field goal, they wouldn’t have team meetings later that night.

Neuernberger nailed it.

After the excitement of the newly free night had subsided, Day gathered the team and let them know that their night wasn’t exactly going to be free after all. Instead of meetings at the team hotel, they’d be heading to The ‘Shoe to see Beyonce and Jay-Z.

It wasn’t long after that, that the group found themselves hanging out with DJ Khaled — the opening act for the On The Run II tour.

Also, the team visited Beyoncé and Jay-Z at The ‘Shoe.

We’re back with another episode of the Why Is This News? Podcast, with co-hosts Matt Tamanini and Alexis Chassen catching up on all the biggest Buckeye stories of the week.

With the Urban Meyer investigation near a close, the pair discusses the latest since last week’s episode, and how it’s affecting training camp and how the media covers it. While it made sense for a media blackout early on in the situation, having no player or coach interviews, or in-practice views with just over two weeks before the season opener. leaves less to be excited about.

There’s also a bit of Buckeye news out of the NFL this week, with one player getting waived due to an injury and another free agent taking a visit in Cleveland.

Ohio State starts back to school next week, and that means several sports have released their tournament schedules for the year, including women’s golf and the swimming and diving program.

Plus, Beyoncé and Jay-Z!

Liddell has the Buckeyes as his first official visit.

The weekend is almost here! On top of that, we’re now one day closer to the start of Ohio State football and basketball.

For football, we edge ever so closer to the kickoff of the 2018 season versus Oregon State on Sept. 1. Additionally, we’re another day closer to finding out what the verdict is from the university’s investigation into Urban Meyer.

On the hardwood, Nov. 1 is the date we’ll see what this Buckeye team is about when they take on UNC Pembroke. But, before then, Chris Holtmann has some recruiting to do. One of the best players in the state of Illinois is set to visit the OSU program—and could be another addition to the 2019 class.

This visit means a lot

Ever since Holtmann came to the Ohio State basketball program, good things have come to the program. With the on-court success last season in his first year as head coach, Holtmann has this team (and program) in the right direction. Certainly when it comes to recruiting, too, this new coaching staff has shown its ability to land top guys, such as their latest commit in 2019 five-star point guard DJ Carton. With the ball rolling in Columbus, the basketball team is looking to continue their success—and that may come sooner rather than later.

Illinois Mr. Basketball winner EJ Liddell (@EasyE2432) has locked in his official visit schedule, he tells me.

OSU - 8/31
Mizzou - 9/8
KSU - 9/28
Wisconsin - 10/6#Illini - 10/12

He talks about what he's looking for & when he wants to make a decision... https://t.co/wqMozljHb1 pic.twitter.com/jGpZ2jKw6P

— Derek Piper (@DPiper247) August 16, 2018

Looking to build on the commitment of Carton, Holtmann and staff are doing their very best to secure another top tier guy for this 2019 haul. One guy they’d love to add to the fold is E.J. Liddell. A name not unfamiliar at all to Ohio State fans, Liddell is slated to have his official visit to Columbus for the weekend of Aug. 31, which will be the first of five official visits he will take.

Having to fight off four schools, the Buckeyes are doing well in this recruitment, but if you want to see just what E.J. is looking for, the article in the tweet will give the inside scoop. If Ohio State wants to secure this star and put the finishing touches to their 2019 haul, they’ll get the first crack at it. Odds are looking pretty good that they’ll do just that.

Why was there any doubt?

Stars and rankings in recruiting don’t mean everything, but to be real honest, they certainly mean something at least. Ohio State has landed top guy after top guy, and don’t think for a second that doesn’t transition to the game field. Coaches coach, of course, but talent definitely has a say for winning games. That right there is one of the main reasons the Buckeyes—year in and year out—continue to win. Simply, they recruit talent and they do it very well. The coaching staff doesn’t always get lost in the star rankings, but as we’ve heard this staff say many times before, if there’s a recruiting championship on paper, they want to win it.

In the 2019 class, the Buckeyes are holding on to the top class in the Big Ten as well as the eighth best class nationally. While it’s true that many of the non-committed Ohio State targets are awaiting the fate of Urban Meyer, the rest of the class has not seen any wavering to this point. One guy that continues to not only be a solid leader in the class, but also be one of the most respectable recruits in the country, is 2019 current commit Harry Miller. An offensive lineman with as much size and talent as you’d ever want to have, Miller is as talented off the field as he is on. Yesterday, in an updated recruiting rankings courtesy of 247sports, Miller was once again raised to five-star status.

Never really deserving of any decrease in his ranking, it’s nice to see him back as one of the few five-star kids in the 2019 class. OSU now has Miller and wide receiver Garrett Wilson as five-star verbal commits for the upcoming recruiting cycle. It’s been a great run for Ohio State at the center position with back-to-back Rimington award winners. If Miller continues to elevate his game, it probably wouldn’t surprise that many people if he was to become another Buckeye to win the coveted Rimington award.

No matter who is the head coach when the season kicks off against Oregon State, the Buckeyes are still loaded with talent.

“Coach Urban Meyer’s future at Ohio State might be in doubt, but the talent level on the field for the Buckeyes certainly isn’t a question.”

Mitch Stacy, Associated Press

With Ohio State still in the midst of the investigation of how Urban Meyer handled domestic abuse allegations against former wide receivers coach Zach Smith, it is easy to forget just how good of a football team Ohio State will field this season. The Buckeyes are loaded with talent on both sides of the football, and again should be a contender to make the College Football Playoff.

The biggest area in which fans are ready to get some answers to is how effective redshirt sophomore quarterback Dwayne Haskins will be in replacing J.T. Barrett. While Haskins won’t have quite the leadership impact that Barrett had, but there is no question that Haskins has the talent to find immediate success for Ohio State.

Haskins gave fans a glimpse to what could be in store in the future when he stepped in for an injured Barrett last year against Michigan and led the Buckeyes to victory. With a full offseason to get comfortable in the offense, as well as having a talented group of receivers at his disposal, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Haskins coming out of the gates hot with the Buckeyes putting more of an emphasis on the passing game.

The new starting quarterback will also have the luxury of running backs J.K. Dobbins and Mike Weber lining up with him in the backfield. Despite J.T. Barrett carrying the football 165 times in 2017, Dobbins and Weber still were able to combine for over 2,000 yards on the ground. With Barrett having moved on to the NFL, the workload for the running backs will increase even more. If the duo can run the football like they were able to over the last month of the 2017 season, defenses around the Big Ten will have their work cut out for them.

Despite seeing a number of starters move on to the NFL, Ohio State’s defense still has plenty of talent to work with. The biggest of those stars is Nick Bosa, who is likely suiting up for his final season with the Buckeyes. The junior defensive end is already predicted as one of the top picks in the 2019 NFL Draft, as he looks to follow in the footsteps of older brother Joey, who also left Columbus after his junior season. Expect even bigger numbers from Bosa this year as he’ll be on the field more this year.

“It’s arguable, though, that Ohio State’s current roster of tight ends is its most talented roster of tight ends in several years. And despite their inexperience, Ohio State’s coaches have expressed confidence that they could have as many as four tight ends who are capable of making a significant impact on the team this season.”

Dan Hope, Eleven Warriors

Ohio State has plenty of talented wide receivers on their roster heading into the 2018 season, but that doesn’t mean people should be sleeping on the tight ends. There are as many four tight ends who could make an impact this season, as the Buckeyes look to replace the production of Marcus Baugh, who caught 28 passes and five touchdowns last season.

The starter at tight end to open up the season for Ohio State will be Luke Farrell. The redshirt sophomore’s biggest asset is with his blocking, but he also has the ability to be a threat in the intermediate passing game. Farrell is going to wow people with his athletic ability like a couple of the other tight ends on the roster, but he’ll give the Buckeyes solid production at the position.

The tight end that many are most looking forward to seeing on the field is Jeremy Ruckert. The freshman comes to Columbus as the second-best tight end in the 2018 recruiting class, and has the looks of being Ohio State’s most dynamic tight end in years. Despite being just a freshman, many have Ruckert pegged to make an immediate impact.

The wildcard of the group is Rashod Berry, who came to Ohio State as a defensive end. Berry moved to tight end after the logjam of talent at defensive end, and has tremendous athletic ability. Last year Berry was on the field for 215 snaps, catching six passes, two of which were touchdowns. Berry is still raw and learning the position, which might see Farrell and Ruckert get some more playing time.

The inexperience at the position could see the trio of tight ends, along with Jake Hausmann all seeing playing time early in the year to try and figure out who is suited best to get the majority of the snaps. With the increased emphasis on the passing game this year, it wouldn’t be hard to imagine some higher catch totals for the tight ends this year than in recent years.

“This staff’s ability to build relationships is second to none. Those bonds the prospects have with the staff aren’t easy to break.”

Steve Wiltfong, Director of recruiting for 247Sports via Tim May, The Columbus Dispatch

Despite head coach Urban Meyer being placed on paid administrative level at the beginning of the month, Ohio State recruiting is still going strong. All 15 of the recruits from the 2019 class are still committed to Ohio State, as well as the six recruits from the 2020 class that have recruited.

2019 wide receiver commit Garrett Wilson is confident that Urban Meyer will be the coach at Ohio State, and until he hears otherwise he is a solid commit to the school. Even if Ohio State decides to move on from Meyer, Wilson had high praise for interim head coach Ryan Day, and would feel confident in playing for Day if he ended up as the permanent head coach.

Of course there could be a change in the feelings of many recruits if Meyer doesn’t return to the team, but Ohio State’s recruiting staff, led by Mark Pantoni, has built so many strong relationships with commits that there might not be the mass exodus of recruits that often comes when a high-profile coach is let go.

Ohio State is still Ohio State, and whether the head coach of the football team is Urban Meyer or someone else might sway some recruits to look elsewhere, but there is still plenty of talented recruits who would have Ohio State at the top of their list.
