Men's Basketball: Jason Preston and Ben Vander Plas lead Ohio back to the NCAA Tournament

The night before they were set to play the biggest game of their careers, roommates Jason Preston and Ben Vander Plas laid in a Renaissance Cleveland Hotel room restless over the opportunity at stake.

In just a few hours, they would play in the Mid American Conference Tournament final. But instead of talking about the future, they discussed the past. Specifically when they first became teammates and how much their friendship had grown over three seasons playing together.

Vander Plas and Preston spent many restless nights in different hotels and motels imagining the feeling of hoisting a MAC Championship trophy over their heads. On Saturday night, after defeating No.2 seed Buffalo 84-69 at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, their dream became a reality.

“We were talking about it last night. For J’s (Preston) visit to OU, I remember going to dinner with him,” Vander Plas said. “And to see where we are now, it’s just a crazy moment and I’m thankful to be where we are right now.”

Preston’s 22 points, seven assists and six rebounds and Vander Plas’ clutch shooting and stand out defense led Ohio to its first MAC title since 2012, and an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. Together Vander Plas and Preston answered questions to the media, but as a team, Ohio destroyed the defending MAC Champion Bulls.

Iowa State Cyclones

Iowa State, coach Steve Prohm agree to part ways after Cyclones earn just two wins in 2020-21 season

Prohm went 97-95 with Iowa State in six seasons, and the Cyclones won just two games in the 2020-21 season.

Iowa State on Monday night announced it has come to an agreement to part ways with basketball coach Steve Prohm after six seasons. Prohm went 97-95 during his tenure and 40-68 in Big 12 play but posted a 2-22 record last season with zero of those wins coming against teams outside the major seven conference structure.

Its two wins this season were the fewest for the Iowa State program since 1924-1925.

Prohm's position as Iowa State's head coach entering the season was not considered to be in jeopardy -- he took the Cyclones to three NCAA Tournament appearances and twice led them to Big 12 tournament titles -- but being historically bad likely sealed his fate. The Cyclones became the first team to go winless in league play since TCU in 2013-14, and their 18 consecutive losses set a program record. It also capped the worst two-year stretch for the program since 1989-1991.

Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard did not comment on the firing, but Iowa State announced he met with Prohm on Monday night to deliver the news. Pollard will offer additional comments on the firing on Tuesday.

Minnesota Golden Gophers

Minnesota expected to part ways with coach Richard Pitino after eight seasons with Gophers

Pitino will finish his tenure with a 141-123 overall record and two NCAA Tournament appearances

Adding a twist to the saga, Pitino's middling performance on the job has not precluded him from opportunities in the near future. Goodman additionally reported that Pitino is a finalist for the New Mexico job -- along with former Nebraska coach Tim Miles -- and that a decision from that program on who will fill the opening should be made in the coming days.

Iowa Hawkeyes

Iowa Hawkeyes extending men's basketball coach Fran McCaffery's contract through 2028

Hawkeyes coach Fran McCaffery signed a four-year contract extension through 2027-28 on Monday after leading the eighth-ranked Hawkeyes to the Big Ten tournament semifinals and their highest NCAA tournament seeding since 1987.

The Hawkeyes are 21-8 and finished third in the Big Ten regular season at 14-6. They've been ranked in the top 15 every week this season and peaked at No. 5 last week. The team is a No. 2 seed in the NCAA tournament and will play Grand Canyon on Friday in Indianapolis.

McCaffery's annual base salary of $2.3 million for the next two seasons will remain unchanged. He took a 15% pay cut for this year to help the athletic department offset shortfalls caused by the pandemic. He is on track to receive longevity bonuses at the end of the next two seasons.

His annual salary will increase each of the last five years of the deal. Those increases were not announced.

Just sayin': He got a good contract while Iowa was a top 10 team. It will be interesting to see how Iowa does next season without Luka Garza (Senior) and Jordan Bohannon (5th year Senior). Even though they get a free year this year; realistically, I don't expect either one to comeback next season.

Indiana Hoosiers Basketball (Dead Program)

The long, slow death march that is IU Basketball, post Bobby Knight, continues. Archie Miller gone after 4 years, zero conference titles, zero NCAA berths a 67-56 record overall and a 33-43 record vs. the B1G.

Being that they seem to think they're still relevant and totally not the basketball version of Corn Football, every pie in the sky name you can imagine is being thrown out as potential candidates to replace Archie.

Michigan State Spartans

Michigan State announces basketball team will now be called 'MSU Spartans Presented by Rocket Mortgage'

In an age where sponsor patches are on every NBA uniform and the Nike swoosh has even hit MLB jerseys, maybe it was only a matter of time before companies started pushing for the actual names of major American sports teams.

Michigan State entered new territory on Thursday by announcing a massive expansion in its endorsement deal with Rocket Mortgage, including a name change for its men's basketball team on campus.

Yes, rather than call them the Michigan State Spartans, the team will now receive the following treatment in East Lansing's Breslin Center:

Under the new five-year deal, Detroit-based Rocket Mortgage will be the presenting sponsor of the famed men's basketball team which will now be known throughout the Breslin Center as, "MSU Spartans Presented by Rocket Mortgage."

The MSU Spartans Presented by Rocket Mortgage, feel the hype.

Here's how Tom Izzo reacted to the news through the Spartans:

"Rocket Mortgage has been a valued partner for years with Michigan State and we are excited that they are continuing to support our program into the future," said Michigan State Men's Basketball Coach Tom Izzo. "As presenting sponsor of our season, their presence will be an asset as we compete for championships."

Rocket Mortgage's relationship with the program comes via the co-founder of its parent company. Quicken Loans chairman Dan Gilbert, who also owns the Cleveland Cavaliers, is a graduate of Michigan State and a significant donor to the school.

Obviously, broadcasters and other outlets will, in all likelihood, continue to call them the Spartans going forward, though some Big Ten teams may have a little fun with their rivals' new title. Still, it's wild to see a legitimate college basketball team, a power program no less, give up its very name to the advertising gods. Especially since we're talking about a team ostensibly composed of amateurs.

Rocket Mortgage sponsorship gives MSU men's basketball a new name

Michigan State University men's basketball team will soon be known as "MSU Spartans Presented by Rocket Mortgage" after a new five-year sponsorship deal with the Detroit-based mortgage lender was unveiled Thursday.

The financial terms of the sponsorship were not disclosed, but the name involving the Rocket Companies Inc. brand will start in the 2021-22 athletic season. It will make the "company synonymous with Spartan athletics," according to a news release from the university.

The partnership will also mean branding placement for the Detroit-based mortgage lender on TV, radio and in the university's athletic facilities for the men's and women's basketball teams as well as football and hockey teams.

"It is our hope," Rocket CEO Jay Farner said in a statement, "that our presence in MSU Athletics will make students and athletes more aware of the opportunities for them right here in Detroit with Rocket Mortgage and the many other growing companies in the city."
.
.
.
The sponsorship comes after Mat Ishbia, CEO of Rocket rival United Wholesale Mortgage Holdings Corp., last month donated $32 million to his alma mater's athletic program, the largest single cash commitment in MSU history from an individual.

The former walk-on basketball player who recently became a billionaire after taking his company public in January was a member of the 2000 national championship team at Michigan State under Izzo.

The largest portion of the Ishbia commitment — $20 million — will go toward the football program, providing resources to construct a performance zone in an expansion of the Skandalaris Football Center, including improvements to the football auditorium, expanding the weight room and creating new player lockers, informal meeting spaces as well a dining and nutrition area.

Ishbia last week also escalated his Pontiac-based company's years-long war with Rocket, the country's largest mortgage lender. He announced starting Monday, mortgage brokers who continue to do business with Rocket will be unable to work with United Wholesale, the country's fourth-largest lender.

But Ishbia on Thursday night downplayed the rivalry with Rocket chairman Dan Gilbert, another Spartan alumnus, when it comes to their alma mater's athletics program.

"I’m happy for Michigan State. Anything that is good for the Spartans is good for Mat Ishbia. I support it all," Ishbia told The Detroit News. "People think I’d be upset. I love when Michigan State gets a great sponsorship. There’s no competitive juices between me and Dan Gilbert over Michigan State. I’m a huge supporter of Michigan State in every way and if something is good for Michigan State and the Spartans, then I’m supportive of it."

Professional High School Basketball League

Overtime set to launch professional high school basketball league that pays players $100K

The league is hoping to become an alternative to college for young basketball stars

While a majority of NBA players make quite a good living through their contracts, college and high school basketball stars playing for free has been a hot button issue for years. Multimedia sports brand Overtime is trying to change that.

They will be starting a professional basketball league that will offer high school basketball players an alternative to college in preparation for the NBA. Overtime Elite will begin in September 2021 and will feature 30 of the nation's top prospects from ages 16-18. The athletes will be given a guaranteed minimum salary of $100,000 in addition to bonuses and equity in the league.

The league's athletes will also have access to healthcare and disability benefits. If an Overtime Elite athlete chooses not to pursue an NBA career, the league will pay them up to $100,000 to go towards college tuition.
