Offensive
tOSU Offensive MVP
We were the first to the interwebs about this thanks to @Mike Meals
MDotySr – They won’t show up in any stat sheet, but the Offensive Line as a unit is my MVP. The questions all spring and summer were about the new faces and true freshman starting and was repeated from social media to message boards. The SLOBS stood on their heads and created holes and provided protection, without that there would have not been 77 points ?
Scott – JT Barrett. Solid effort
Patrick – JT Barrett. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come for this season.
WVa – JT Barrett made sure that everyone in the Shoe on Saturday knew who was in charge! It’s not like he is going through QBgeddon again but you got the feeling he was exorcising some demons!
Brandon – I will go with Curtis Samuel. I’ve been shouting from the rooftops on how much I like Samuel but even I was not expecting the day he had. In his first start as the H-back, he racked up 266 yards and three touchdowns. What is even more impressive is he could have had a lot more. If the Buckeyes really just wanted to force feed him, there is no doubt in my mind he could have run for 200+ yards and caught for 200+ yards…of course that might have been the case with a few players yesterday.
Joe D. – Brandon and I share a wavelength on this one. All I can truly say is it’s a relief to see the coaching staff implement Curtis Samuel as the main threat early in the season. To see him take over the game and to hear Urban Meyer say he might be the only true hybrid in his offense’s history — that was satisfying enough to know that taking a back seat the last two years will pay off for the Bronx Hybrid.
Ben v. – Curtis Samuel. You can see what a weapon he is going to be for Urban Meyer. He can carry it out of the backfield and line up at wideout and be just as effective. Its nice to have a thunder and lightning tailback scenario with Weber and Samuel and I only expect it to get better.
JC – J.T. seems like the apparent choice. Solid – unquestionable. But I feel we expected nothing shy of such an effort from him. I vote for Curtis Samuel who was a dual threat with 84 yards on the ground & 177 yards receiving and 3 TD’s total. The kid from Brooklyn shined and is a star.
Shannon – I am going to go with the water-boys. Watching them Buckeyes running up and down the field, keeping them hydrated that is a thankless job. Bravo team bravo!
Mike Meals – JT had a great game, but I am going with Curtis Samuel. Just an impressive day for Curtis. I think this will help boost his confidence, and help get him rolling for the year.
If anyone would have said anything other than J.T. here they would be fired! (Editors Note: Five people said Samuel, two more than Barrett…maybe you should be fired!)
tOSU O-line MVP
MDotySr –.The entire group of SLOBS!! See above.
Scott – The whole unit
Patrick – like Scott, I give it to the entire line and specifically Michael Jordan for being the second freshman OL to ever start for Ohio State, second to only Orlando Pace.
WVa – I have to admit that I am pretty surprised by total effort of the slobs. They have two returning players that are as good as they come and the rest are knew including the
very talented tight end this season. Granted, it was Bowling Green but you have to believe they were prepared for a running game that has a new star runner and knew where they could attack along the front. Whats more impressive about the performance is the time they gave JT to throw the ball.
Joe D. – Pat Elflein stopped any interior rush attempt and really gave Barrett time to sit back and be comfortable in the pocket. Yes, pressure comes from the outside edge, but it starts in the interior. Elflein was a road grader and pass protector on Saturday.
Ben v. – Michael Jordan. First true freshman to start since Orlando, and he played an excellent game despite a few penalties. Can’t wait to see him and the entire o-line grow this season.
Brandon – Pat Elflein. I know the whole unit was dominating but without Elflein in the middle that may not have been the case. With three new starters, including one true freshman, Elflein was able to keep them calm and composed.
JC – Absolutely the whole front line. They all deserve a nod.
Shannon – Greg Studwa. That JT kid had some time to throw didn’t he. Great job coach.
Mike Meals – Everyone. Anytime you dominate any D1 program like that, everyone was doing their job.
The Slobs have it and they could be one of the best in the nation at seasons end . . , stay tuned!
tOSU Offensive Unsung
MDotySr –.Mike Weber started off with a bang while running for 136 yards on 19 carries. He just missed a couple of long runs with shoestring tackles, the best of Weber is yet to be seen.
Scott – Dontre Wilson
Patrick – Ed Wariner. Going up to the booth has been magical since doing it.
WVa – I am going to also go with Dontre Wilson here. I think his presence makes things difficult on secondary’s to pick and choose who to cover and that is definitely what led to the KJ Hill and Noah Brown scores for sure. His blocking has improved greatly too.
Joe D. – How about the effeciency of the receiving corps on Saturday? Everyone did their job and did it well. The Buckeyes had 27 overall receptions and hauled in 70 percent of the pass attempts thrown throughout the afternoon. Not to mention, everyone made big plays. The aforementioned Samuel averaged over 19 yards per catch. K.J. Hill had a monstrous touchdown grab. Noah Brown helped maintain possession with some catches in which he just out-physicaled the defensive back covering him. Overall, nine receivers touched the ball. Of those, five scored on touchdown passes. You can’t beat that type of passing and receiving efficiency.
Ben v. – Dontre Wilson. He showed how electric he can be with the ball in his hands, and can show some of the same flashes as Samuel. He is an excellent pass catcher, and running the wildcat seems right up his alley. Hopefully he can stay healthy this year and end his career at Ohio State on a really high note.
Brandon – Dontre Wilson. As I mentioned in the preseason awards, it is very easy to forget how special Wilson is. He has pretty much been injured for two years and was passed up by other great players. I mentioned how he had put on 15 lbs and it definitely showed yesterday. He will never be the top receiver…or rusher…or playmaker on this team BUT he will be a major part of any success they have. With his return abilities and his ability to step into the HB role and allow Samuel to move to RB, Wilson will continue to make plays all season. Yesterday’s stat line of 36 rushing yards, 37 receiving yards, 28 return yards should be the baseline of what we will see from Wilson every week. The two touchdowns were just icing on the cake. With so much focus on Barrett, Samuel, and Weber…Wilson could steal a bunch of stats.
JC – Dontre Wilson. His 36 on the ground and 37 receiving along with 2 TD’s went completely unnoticed because of the dynamite action of JT & Samuel. He put on a nice show.
Shannon – Tim Beck. JT looked like a really really good quarterback.
Mike Meals – Wilson is good, and by all means I am glad he’s back. But I think Mike Weber going 19 for 136 shows he will be great for the Buckeyes. He is a little work horse.

Malik Hooker is a star in the making.
Scott – Malik Hooker
Patrick – Malik Hooker. Dude has AA written all over him.
WVa – I was telling a new usher in my portal during the pre-game warm-ups who I thought would be a star. All i said to him was remember the name Hooker. The kid did not disappoint! I enjoyed watching him play on Saturday and I couldn’t help myself with a nice little slogan for him, By Hook or By Crook!
Joe D. – If Malik Hooker keeps trending like he has since spring, we are going to have to name this award after him forever and ever amen. What a display of athleticism, durability, coverage skills, and physical power on Saturday.
Ben v. – Ummm…. I guess Malik Hooker. He had an interception or two didn’t he?
Brandon – I will go with Malik Hooker. He is just the type of playmaker we haven’t seen at Ohio State in awhile. It is like Tyvis Powell and Vonn Bell had a playmaking baby showcasing the best of both of their abilities. Good thing for Malik, I read that taking horrible routes to the ball is not hereditary.
JC – Malik Hooker without question. His first interception where he tipped it and as he fell onto his back snagged it was only half of the show. His ability to follow the ball, changing direction, and his range, as he showed specifically on that play was utterly amazing. He came across the field to make that play. Malik Hooker is good. Look for him to get better. He is the real deal – period.
Shannon – Joe Burger. He played a lot more than what was planned with Donte Booker watching from the sideline
Mike Meals – Let’s just make this unanimous (
editors note: outside of Shannon trying hard to be different) – Hooker
Malik Hooker deserves this award this week. Shannons mention of Joe Burger reminds us next man up is terribly important!
tOSU D-line MVP
MDotySr – Nick Bosa had the best stats and I think that we will see more of him. Just scratching the surface.
Scott – everyone
Patrick – Nick Bosa. True Frosh tied for team lead in tackles w 4 and a sack.
WVa – I am honoring Tracy Sprinkle with this award this week because of the many times he won’t be mentioned here now. I think the next man up mentality will make sure the d-line is okay after losing him but you
cannot replace his leadership! I for one am going to miss Tracy this season.
Joe D. – I’ll go with the whole line, because they were able to hold the BGSU offense to just 69 rushing yards. Before you start screaming, I understand that BGSU passed the ball 44 times. The Buckeyes threw the pill 39 times and still rushed for 359 yards. Imposing your will means everything in this game. The Falcons averaged 2.5 yards per rush.
Ben v. – The entire first team and second team lines really held their own out there. It really hurt losing Tracy Sprinkle for the year as he was going to be a huge contributor to that side of the ball, but with the production from the rest of the line, it seems to be in good hands for the rest of the year.
Brandon – This one is tough because no one really stood out. BGSU gets rid of the ball so quick, they really didn’t have a chance to shine. With that said, I will go with the DT group. McMillan and Burger were in on every run play without much resistance. That would not have been possible without those DTs clogging up the middle.
JC – I will go with Hubbard – because that’s almost how I am suppose to respond. He’ll be the top-dog all year. But the BG game all deserve credit for outstanding play.
Shannon – Anyone not named Bosa. For reasons of not paying homage to his brother with the shrug. Long live the shrug!
Mike Meals – There were a lot of guys playing, but I am going with Tracy Sprinkle…only because I like the kid and if he really is going to be out for the season, I won’t be able to put him in here later

tOSU Defensive Unsung
MDotySr – I’ll go with Lattimore here who overcame injuries to come up and play a great game. He will be picked all year in lieu of going to Conley’s side of the field. Saturday was very important experience for one of the best athletes on the team. If he stays healthy, he’s the next great CB at TOSU.
Scott – Not picking one. They all shone
Patrick – The secondary. The most questionable unit coming into this season rose and shined in their first appearance as a unit.
WVa – This is where I will mention Joe Burger again. With Booker on the sidelines he stepped up and played a pretty good game. Burger is in a spot where he is going to be depended on heavily this season and he will do wonderfully!
Joe D. – Greg Schiano’s instant impact on the new defensive backs that are playing major roles early on in the season. This is a coach that has exclusively grown through the tampa 2 over the last several years but has adapted his tackling style to an already successful defensive scheme. Job well done sir. #ChoppinWood
Ben v. – Lattimore and Webb. Conley and Hooker were pretty solidified in their starting jobs, but Lattimore and Webb were battling all camp to get their spots in the secondary. I think they proved they belonged with a solid afternoon. They along with the whole defense gave up 3 points and hardly and big plays.
Brandon – Raekwon McMillan. He didn’t play too much but I feel like he had a little under 100 tackles. It seemed like he was in on every tackle in the first part of the game. Sometimes it is tough to not give up long runs against teams like BG because you are so focused on the pass but McMillan did a great job of helping shut down Coppett who is a pretty decent back.
JC – They all played well. But let’s go with Bosa, just because he is certainly on his way to being a bonafide star.
Shannon – Greg Schiano, the streak of holding opposing teams under hundred yards for the game started with one.
Mike Meals – Rodjay Burns – yeah, it was late, and I know he scored, but he wasn’t even listed on the 2 deep this week, and now his name will forever be in the OSU history books for having a Pick 6
When you have 10 plus new players show up on defense and they all get some highlight reel play it can be difficult to pick one.
Odds and Ends
tOSU Special Teams MVP
MDotySr –.Tyler Durbin
Scott – Tyler Durbin
Patrick – Tyler Durbin. 11/11 on pat’s.
WVa – Tyler Durbin, enough said. LOL at Joe below though!
Joe D. – One Durbin, one scotch and one beer. I haven’t seen a good kicker since the season before last. This senior walk-on never gave the pigskin a boot from the hash. Yet, I want one Durbin, one scotch and one beer — One Durbin! One Scotch! And one Beer!
Ben v. – Dubin. Since we only got to see Cam Johnston once, he wins by default.
Brandon – Tyler Durbin. Look his kickoffs weren’t the best but he kept them inbounds. The thing that impressed me the most was his aggressiveness on coverage. On every kickoff he was one of the guys in there to make the tackle. If you didn’t notice, go back and rewatch. It was a joy to watch.
JC – I am going with Liam McCullough, the long-snapper, just wanted to say that. But, for real – an extremely important job that never gets any recognition. Today Liam does!
Shannon – Cameron Johnston, I feel my comrades are underestimating the importance of keeping fresh and into the game when your number isn’t called until the third quarter.
Mike Meals – I am going with Durbin also.
Tyler Durbin is the new sheriff in town and has an ICBM for a leg.
tOSU Needs Improvement
MDotySr – Can always improve staring down on a receiver.
Scott – JT. He threw a pick. Come on.
Patrick – This answer will never change till he leaves……..Dontre Wilson.
WVa – I try to go with something new each week but taking care of the football has me a little concerned. The team has had the ability to get over them but some day they will come back to haunt them like MSU.
Joe D. – I’ll go with the obvious one, being more mentally prepared to start the game. Those moments don’t matter when you are playing a MAC team, but when it comes to week three or deep into the Big Ten schedule, mistakes early in the game could completely set the tempo.
Ben v. – Wide receivers outside of Curtis Samuel. I remember a Noah Brown catch and the KJ Hill touchdown, but other than that moments I remember from wide receivers are few and far between. Hopefully we can see them all step up and make themselves known this season.
Brandon – I will say the secondary. They looked good but you can still see some kinks being worked out, especially with Damon Webb and Marshon Lattimore. I’m talking about things like a few missed tackles or bad routes to the runner. I think they will be great but that is really the only thing I noticed yesterday.
JC – I will still go with play-calling. Though Warinner & Beck “seemingly” improved from last year – it was BG this week … the jury is still out.
Shannon – JT Barrett having an interception (uncalled for protect the ball). Whoever had penalties 9-66 yards. I see you running sprints (no more penalties)
Mike Meals – Player rotation. With a team this young, you need to have as many guys as you can see live action early.
Shannon and I win the toss and this statement to take care of the football. A pick six against the Sooners early will hurt bad.
tOSU Next Big Star
MDotySr –. Malik Hooker
Scott – Malik Hooker
Patrick – Curtis Samuel. Looks like he may be a focus of the O and primed for a breakout season.
WVa – I had to do a coin toss here. There are so many possibilities but I truly believe that Malik Hooker is the man. I only say this because I think Weber will get the yards we need to keep teams honest, but not the scores. I think that will come from Zone6 this season.
Joe D. – Where do I begin? There were tons of talented young players that showed they could be superstars down the road on defense, offense and even possibly on special teams. I’ll select Demario McCall because everyone else has gone with the big names. McCall and Joe Burrow both took their playing time seriously and shined on the field in mop-up duty. That could pay dividends if unfortunate injuries ail the Buckeyes later in the season.
Ben v. – Weber for me. He has more of a chance to become a star because he touches the ball so many times per game, whereas Hooker has a harder time because he only can make a few plays a game. I can see Weber going for 1200+ yards this season and making some honorable mention All-American teams.
Brandon – I think we saw two next big stars yesterday; Hooker and Weber. I was not surprised by Hooker, he was my pick in the preseason and he did not disappoint. I was not a Weber fan, I just though Samuel was better, but he won me over. He needs to work on his Dontre Wilson disease of shoestring tackles but he still rushed for 136 yards on 7.2 ypc.
JC – Malik Hooker – no doubt.
Shannon – Buckeyes official statisticians, seriously they look to be having a big year.
Mike Meals – Again, I go back to Mike Weber
Gonna go with a tie here between Weber and Hooker. I think there’s plenty of room on both’s bandwagon right now.
TB1G Coach of the Week
MDotySr –.Paul Chryst
Scott – Luke Fickell
Patrick – Paul Chryst. Huge win for Wisky.
WVa – I was worried that Paul Chryst would be the guy to take over for the moron that left for Arkansas and now that he
is the head man in Wisconsin, they will be more dangerous than they were before. They have also already assured he will be the B1G COTY now.
Joe D. – I don’t like crediting a coach because Les Miles has no idea how to run a college football offense in 2016. I’m going with Mike Riley, for his willingness without question to send his punt team out there with just 10 men on their first possession to honor the late Sam Foltz, who died in a car crash in July. Honorary coach of the week honors go to Ferris State head coach Tim DeRuyter for declining the delay of game penalty after Riley let the clock run out in honor of his punter. Riley deserves credit for being one of the classiest coaches in college football.
Ben v. – Chryst. Beating The Hat is a great feat for any coach, but to do it in Lambeau on the national stage is awesome.
Brandon – Paul Chryst. I’m not impressed with Wisconsin, everyone shuts down an LSU offense but knocking off a top five team where no one gave you a chance is impressive!
JC – Gotta go with Paul Chryst – don’t you think?
Shannon – Mark Dantonio. His team played an extremely hard fought game against a tough FCS opponent then has a week to heal up. Way to go coach you’re a very smart man the way you schedule.
Mike Meals – I hate UW, but knocking off the Fightin Corndogs of LSU means Chryst is my pick too.
Paul Chrsyt is the easy choice here and should cause concern for Ohio State fans for the match-up later in the season.
