If you expected a tightly contested game at The Shoe, you should be ashamed of yourself for ever doubting the potency and potential of The Ohio State Buckeyes. In what seemed like a flash, the Buckeyes began the offensive onslaught and unleashed hell on the Bowling Green Falcons. Yes, it is easy to be skeptical after witnessing what the Buckeyes lost after the Fiesta Bowl victory against Nortre Dame, but like most teams Coached by Urban Meyer he simply rallied up the troops that were waiting in the wings and turned them loose to see what they do. It worked. The Buckeyes had replaced playmakers on every level of the offense and defense. They had no choice but to lean heavily on the players who stayed for leadership and for continuity purposes. Although I see it as a learning process that will occur throughout the season this is a good sign of things to come. With the date against Oklahoma on their own home turf, the Buckeyes need to rally around each other and play lights out, to build up their confidence, to buy in, so they can adequately prepare for a true road test against the Oklahoma Sooners. So until then we can see the younger players grow into their roles and we can do nothing but hope for the best.

Recap:

PICK-6.jpg
Well the rust and cobwebs showed during this play. J.T. Barrett rifled a pass to a well covered receiver and Brandon Harris took the interception and ran it in from 63 yards out for the pick 6. This really angered the sleeping giant in Ohio State and this was the beginning of the end for the Falcons. The interception will be the only touchdown that the Buckeyes will allow for the remainder of the contest. This is the only turnover of the game.

KJ-1.jpg

K.J. Hill found blew past the Bowling Green defense and hauled in a beautiful pass from J.T. Barrett for a 47 yard touchdown pass. Remember when I said they woke up a sleeping giant? Yeah, with the ground game working it was only a matter of time when the Buckeyes find their rhythm. Hill finishes his first game of the season with a respectable 58 yards on 2 receptions and a touchdown. Not bad at all.

DW2.png
Dontre Wilson, the forgotten H-Back had himself a game. He finished with 5 rushes for 36 yards and 3 receptions for 37 yards and 2 touchdowns. Wilson overcame injury to finally see some reps. He will grasp at this as long as he can stay healthy and it isn’t a bad way to start the 2016 season. Hauling in a 25 yard and an 11 yard pass from J.T. Barrett.

CS-4.png
Curtis Samuel is the Swiss Army Knife of this years Buckeye offense. He was singled out by Coach Meyer and he has proven that he is ready to be The Weapon that Urban Meyer covets. He had also been picked to become the BIG Breakout player and he proved that he is ready and he is worthy of that title. Samuel was all over the place. He caught a slant and took it 79 yards for a touchdown, a 21 yarder for six and had a 12 yard run for his third and last touchdown of the game. He finished with 13 carries and 84 yards on the ground and 9 catches for 177 yards through the air for 2 touchdowns. He looks the part and lets hope that this is just the beginning.

NB-2.png
After the injury from last season, Noah Brown wanted to start off on the right foot. He, like most of the young playmakers on the team showed out and in a huge way. He went to have a good game and looks to be back in form prior to the severe injury. He finished with 3 catches for 46 yards and a touchdown. I know that it is against Bowling Green, but confidence is huge and with the Buckeyes gaining more prior to week 3, the showdown at Norman will be manageable and they will not be rattled.

DM.png
Freshman Demario McCall showed out as well during garbage time. He racked up 54 yards on the ground with a touchdown and 1 catch for 36 yards and another touchdown. Meyer can really recruit to maximize the potential and yet again, it is showing. Hope the rest of McCall’s freshman campaign can be like this but we will have to wait until another blowout occurs.

JB.png
Well he came back for a reason and with the Buckeyes having a ton to prove, he showed the nation what he and the Buckeyes are capable of. With no more Quarterback controversy in the wings, he set out and after the initial turnover, he recovered quite nicely. He finished the game 21/31 for 349 yards through the air with 6 touchdowns and 30 yards on 6 rushes and another touchdown. Not a bad start for a Quarterback who was left out of the Heisman candidates list prior to the season even starting. Also, Mike Weber, the new Cadillac Back at Ohio State, yeah he is good. Weber finished without a touchdown, but he racked up the yardage, running with power and speed. He ran for 136 yards and I feel that he will only get better and be depended on when time needs to be ran off the clock.

MH2.png
We found another playmaker that will add to the tradition at Ohio State. Malik Hooker was another diamond in the rough and he proved he was worthy of a starting spot on defense. He had a circus catch interception in the first half and during the second half, he stole took the ball away from the receiver for his second of the game. He will be needed to breathe new life into this young defense and it is sure looking good for the time being. Rodjay Burns also had a pick, but he took it 75 yards for the touchdown to all but seal the deal. The young secondary is looking lethal and is gaining steam and it is truly exciting. Baby Bosa, Nick also got into the action and sacked the Bowling Green Quarterback for his first of the season. In other news, the cheap shot dealt to Defensive Tackle Tracy Sprinkle was a costly one. Sprinkle suffered a severe leg injury and his season is now done and he will be out the rest of the year. I hope that he recovers quickly.

It was fun while it lasted and now onto Tulsa week. The Buckeyes showed the lethal combination of ground and pound and attacking the air. The Buckeyes have risen and they can only improve from here and with Oklahoma in two weeks, they will use every game prior to get everything prepared for the big game. And seeing how Houston just upset Oklahoma, we can all but expect a hostile crowd and environment at Norman. Signing out, but before I do GO BUCKS!!!

The Buckeyes kicked off their season with a huge win over the Falcons.

A new team, a new season. Ohio State opened the 2016 season Saturday when they hosted the Bowling Green Falcons. The Buckeyes entered the game as one of the most inexperienced teams in the country, but with Urban Meyer at the helm, Ohio State was ranked sixth in the country in the initial AP Top 25 poll.

The opening game for the Buckeyes started off with a defensive stop on Bowling Green’s first drive that set the tone early defensively. But once Ohio State got the ball things took a turn for the worse. J.T. Barrett threw a pick six just a couple of plays into the first drive, and the Falcons took an early 7-0 lead over the Buckeyes. On the next drive, Mike Weber got things started with a first down run that showed off his speed and power. A few plays later, Barrett found receiver K.J. Hill speeding past a defensive back for a 47-yard touchdown to tie the game at 7.

A 12-play drive by Ohio State the next time they had the ball saw plenty of sustained running by both Mike Weber and Curtis Samuel as well as plenty of wide receivers getting a chance to have the ball in their hands. The drive would result in another touchdown pass from J.T. Barrett as he found Dontre Wilson for 25 yards and a 14-7 lead for the Buckeyes. The defense continued to do it’s job, forcing another punt. The fireworks started almost right away as Barrett found Samuel in the middle of the field as he burned the secondary for a 79-yard bomb to put Ohio State up 21-7.

After some back and forth, Bowling Green would eventually put together a drive into Ohio State’s red zone but another stop by the defense helped hold the Falcons to a field goal to make it 21-10. Weber continued his strong performance with another first down run that set up an excellent 25-yard touchdown catch from Noah Brown for J.T. Barrett’s fourth touchdown of the game. Malik Hooker then provided a game highlight with an interception on the following drive and the Buckeyes took the momentum in stride. Another long drive filled with plenty of sharing, the touchdown run up the middle was a keeper by J.T. Barrett to put Ohio State up 35-10 right before the end of the half.

The second half proved to be just as fortunate for the Buckeyes. Ohio State got to work quickly as J.T. Barrett found Curtis Samuel twice for long plays, the latter coming on a 21-yard touchdown pass. Another stop by the defense helped set up yet another Curtis Samuel touchdown, this time coming on an option pitch for 12 yards to put the Buckeyes up 49-10. Another Malik Hooker interception would set up Ohio State and a touchdown reception for Dontre Wilson, his second of the day. The backups were sent in after Ohio State took a 56-10 lead late in the third quarter.

Demario McCall would turn on the jets early in the fourth quarter as he took a pass 36 yards for a touchdown to up the lead to 63-10 for the Buckeyes. Nick Bosa would get his first career sack on the defensive end to put an exclamation point on a great defensive day for Ohio State. McCall would continue his excellent second half as he would weave his way into the endzone for another touchdown with just over six minutes remaining. To finish off the Falcons, the Buckeyes would add to their lead with a pick six from Rojay Burns, a true freshman for Ohio State.

Here are three things we learned from Ohio State's 77-10 win.

3 things we learned:

1. The wide receiving core is deep and talented. One of the more interesting positions entering the 2016 season was wide receiver, having to replace guys like Michael Thomas, Jalin Marshall, and Braxton Miller. Against Bowling Green, Ohio State proved that its depth at the position is quite loaded. In the first half alone, six different players caught a pass from J.T. Barrett. Noah Brown and K.J. Hill both caught touchdowns in the first half as well, while Curtis Samuel and Dontre Wilson added touchdown receptions of their own, Samuel’s coming on a short throw turned into a speeding Samuel outrunning the defense. Johnnie Dixon and Marcus Baugh also got involved in the action with a handful of receptions between the two.

James Clark provided what would have been a highlight, almost coming up with an excellent catch but it was later overturned by the replay crew. Still, a year after injuries ravaged a lot of the depth chart, the multiple receivers on the roster are proving they have the talent that coach Meyer and the coaching staff have raved about. Certainly wide receivers coach Zach Smith is excited about this group.

K.J. Hill kept things going in the second half as he provided another reception to the teams total. A.J. Alexander, the backup tight end, would get a short reception for three yards as well from Joe Burrow. Overall, the unit should put some nerves to ease, as they had a strong performance that they can only build upon moving forward.

2. The Mike Weber-Curtis Samuel show has started. If anyone was worried about the transition from Ezekiel Elliott to the next era in Ohio State running backs, they shouldn’t be anymore. Mike Weber was named the starter later in the offseason and ever since his breakout spring game, has been a talking point among the coaching staff as being a playmaker for this team. Weber showed up in a big way against Bowling Green, rushing for 94 yards on 11 carries in the first half. Weber showed off both his bounciness from getting off tacklers and also some nice bursts of speed.

Samuel, meanwhile, was hailed by Meyer as being the “guy” on this team when it came to needing to give him the ball as the main playmaker. Meyer lived up to his word as Samuel caught a pass and took it 79 yards for a touchdown in the first half and provided plenty of mini highlights when rushing the ball with 67 yards in the first half. Expect to see plenty of Samuel over the course of the season with the ball in his hands and making big plays.

It didn’t stop in the second half, as Samuel added more receptions and another touchdown catch from Barrett. His explosions all day long have to have the team excited about the rest of the season. Weber hit over the century mark early on in the second half and finished the day with 19 carries and 136 yards rushing. He didn’t get into the endzone for the game, but Samuel made up for that end. Samuel would finish with 13 carries for 84 yards and a rushing touchdown. He also added two touchdown receptions along with eight receptions for 168 yards.

3. J.T. Barrett scored and scored and didn’t stop. J.T. BACK. The junior quarterback was the unquestioned starter entering the season and Barrett has delivered in his first game of the year. In the first half alone, Barrett accounted for all five of Ohio State’s touchdowns with four of those coming through the air. His fifth came on the ground at the end of the first half. After shaking off an early interception for a touchdown, Barrett stood in the pocket and sliced up the Bowling Green defense accordingly. One of the more impressive things about Barrett in this game was his ability to spread the ball around.

Not many teams have the luxury of having talent across the board but Barrett made sure to showcase what the Buckeyes have on their roster, finding six different receivers and running backs in the first half alone and making plays with both his legs and his arm. Barrett would throw for two more touchdowns in the second half, finding Curtis Samuel and Dontre Wilson each.

Barrett would give way to Joe Burrow late in the third quarter, ending his day. Barrett would finish 21-of-31 passing for 349 yards and six touchdowns, adding another touchdown on the ground. He also carried the ball six times for 30 yards. All in all, it was an impressive start to the season for Barrett, as he hopes to lead Ohio State back to the College Football Playoff.

That’s a pretty good start to a season.

Ohio State has high hopes for their offense this season, despite the fact that it features an awful lot of new faces. If their production this season is anything close to how potent the unit was against Bowling Green, they’re going to be more than just fine.

Ohio State didn’t just have a productive afternoon against Bowling Green. Despite playing multiple true freshman, the Buckeyes broke their school record for total yards in a game.

The previous record? 718, recorded against Mt. Union back in 1930. The Buckeyes won that game 59-0, en route to a 5-2-1 season. This was back when Ohio State still played teams like Ohio Wesleyan and Kenton. It was a very long time ago, and things have changed since then.

The Buckeyes have J.T. Barrett to thank for the explosion, as he threw for 349 yards and six touchdowns, while running for another 30 yards and a score. Mike Weber also ran for 136 yards in his Buckeye debut.

*SUPER MARIO JUMPING NOISE*

Marcus Baugh’s had quite the journey to becoming Ohio State’s starting tight end.

Despite a pair of underage drinking relating charges (and nearly being dismissed from the team), Baugh managed to get his act together and had one of the best springs of anyone on the Ohio State offense this past offseason.

Baugh again reportedly found his way into Urban Meyer’s doghouse when he was said to show up to summer camp a bit out of shape.

But after weathering that latest setback, Baugh’s found his way to the top of the OSU depth chart, and with athleticism like this, it’s easy to see why:

Those are some ups for a player who’s nearly 260 pounds.

Wow!

J.T. Barrett’s going to have some options this fall.

Having found 10 (!) different Ohio State wide receivers during the first quarter alone, Barrett and Buckeye co-offensive coordinators Ed Warinner and Tim Beck continued to spread the love in the second.

After finding James Clark for a near highlight real big gain earlier and breaking in a couple other fresh faces (including K.J. Hill), Barrett went to another relative newcomer in Noah Brown, one of last season’s most hyped players who went down with a brutally unfair injury just before the season started.

The throw was great and the adjustment to make the catch was even better:

Upon yet another review — the OSU-Bowling Green games seemed to feature a half dozen and we’re not even to halftime yet — the call stood.

We could see a lot more of this connection throughout the 2016 football season.

WHAT?!? HOW!?!

It’s pretty early on college football Saturday, so sure, it’s technically possible somebody is going to pull off an interception more impressive and amazing than Ohio State’s midway through the second quarter, but we doubt it.

Malik Hooker picked up his first career interception on this play, and while we feel good about his chances of picking up several more during his Ohio State career, he probably won’t get one as impressive or athletic as thing one.

I mean ... what ... how ... whoa.

Couldn’t have come at a better time too, as Ohio State has a chance to extend a 28-10 lead before halftime and push this game even farther out of reach. Now we can all see why Ohio State likes this guy so much.

Why you hating, ref?

James Clark’s had one hell of a journey to seeing action in Ohio State’s season opener against Bowling Green.

Between injuries, rumors of a possible medical disqualification ending his college career, and about as much adversity as a redshirt junior could possibly undergo, it was no sure thing Clark would ever make an impact on the field for the Buckeyes.

He got his shot during Saturday during the second quarter:

While catch would ultimately be overturned upon further review, it’s still great to see Clark getting a chance after everything he’s been through.

Here’s hoping this is the first of many more highlight reel plays for No. 82. Hopefully the next couple aren’t overturned by replay too.

Hopefully it isn’t as serious as it looked.

In early season games, you hope for two things. You want young players to step up and get important experience, and you hope everybody stays healthy. Basically, you want to avoid a scene like the Buckeyes experience late in the first quarter against Bowling Green.

Defensive lineman Tracy Sprinkle appeared to injure his knee, and had to be helped off of the field, where he was immediately taken to the locker room. The Big Ten Network's Lisa Byington said she was told by Ohio State's training staff that Sprinkle suffered a knee injury and that it took "maybe a minute" to rule him out.

A junior, Sprinkle figured to play an important part in Ohio State’s deep defensive tackle rotation, providing leadership and experience in a unit that will boast several young players.

Linebacker Dante Booker has also been on the sideline with walk-on Joe Burger in his stead, though the severity of his injury at least anecdotally seemed less.

He’s fast!

If you put the ball in Ohio State’s Curtis Samuel’s hands in space, something explosive’s bound to happen.

While the junior hasn’t made a huge impact in his short Buckeyes football career, that looks set to change this season.

With seemingly every coach glowing about the kind of impact he’s going to have on the OSU offensive, the first quarter of the Bucks’ season opener against Bowling Green allowed him to showcase just that.

Watch Samuel catch the ball and then do what he does best en route to six points for the home team:

Sneaky underrated aspect of the sequence: J.T. Barrett stood in the pocket like a champ while he threw a perfect strike.

This could be a long season for opposing defenders hoping to slow the lightning quick New York native down. Good luck to them.

What a toss.

So, maybe the first game of the season didn’t start exactly how Ohio State wanted it. Despite some early advantageous field position, J.T. Barrett tossed a pick-six, giving Bowling Green an early lead, and taking some of the air out of the Horseshoe. It would be critical for a young team to come out swinging on their next drive, to reestablish exactly who Ohio State is, before the Falcons could get any ideas.

And did they ever.

KJ Hill, a former four-star recruit who has flown under the radar a little bit thanks to a crowded depth chart for Ohio State, hauled in this perfect strike to tie the game up for the Buckeyes, and become the first wideout with a touchdown catch on Ohio State’s roster.

BuckeyeSports.com subscriber Ben van Ooyen’s weekly column “View From The Fan” begins with a preview of Ohio State’s matchup with Bowling Green.

It’s that time of year again – when Ohio State football takes the field, and millions of fans across the world tune in to watch the Buckeyes battle it out on the gridiron. This offseason we saw 12 Buckeyes drafted and a top-five recruiting class signed, but the spring and summer are behind us. Fall is coming, and with it brings Saturdays filled with hopes for undefeated glory ending in another national championship.

As a fan of the Buckeyes, this will be a fun team to watch. There will be some growing pains, sure, and undoubtedly some struggles, but there will also be a lot of excitement and talent on the field every Saturday. Buckle in and get ready to ride the roller coaster of emotion with me and Buckeye fans across the nation as we see what Urban Meyer and Co. have put together.

Both sides of the ball are going to look vastly different than last year.

The Offense

J.T. Barrett – no quarterback drama this year, folks! – returns as a redshirt junior. The stalwart offensive line lost three starters after last season, so veterans Pat Elflein and Billy Price will have to shore up the foundation with a lot of new pieces. Now that Ezekiel Elliott is gone, the backfield will be a running back by committee made up of Mike Weber, Dontre Wilson, and Curtis Samuel. The wide receivers may be the most fresh-faced group of the bunch with only 15 catches last season among them. The Buckeyes will rely heavily on guys like Corey Smith and Noah Brown, and maybe even some freshmen like K.J. Hill and Austin Mack, to get the job done.

The Defense

On the defensive side of the ball, there are some returning starters in Raekwon McMillan, Gareon Conley and Tyquan Lewis. The rest of the defense is another inexperienced bunch. Expect Michael Hill, Tracy Sprinkle, Dante Booker, Malik Hooker and a host of other young athletes to get a lot of playing time this year to prove their worth.

The Opponent

Let’s move on to Bowling Green, shall we? The first game of the season is like waking up on Christmas morning and knowing you have a nice, big gift to unwrap. Every year, Santa brings Saturdays where I spend three to four hours nervously sitting on my couch – or in the ‘Shoe, if I’m lucky – watching my alma mater play football. I don’t care who the opponent is, or care about pretty much anything else that’s going on, just Ohio State football. After the somewhat disappointing 2015 season (i.e. the Michigan State game), I’m excited to see what the 2016 version of the Buckeyes brings.

For this game, I expect there to be a lot of offense on both sides. Bowling Green can certainly move the ball up and down the field. The Falcons come in with head coach Mike Jinks, a former assistant under Kliff Kingsbury at Texas Tech – who we all know threw the ball around 50 times a game.

The Game

I think the Buckeyes will try to get the ground game going early so Weber can settle in; Samuel and Wilson will probably tote the rock as well. Look for Barrett to distribute the ball to his new wide receiver targets to get them comfortable as well. I expect the defense to have the biggest struggle, but with McMillan and Conley leading the charge, I don’t see the Buckeyes breaking too often.

It’s the first game of the season. Mistakes will be made. Things will look messy. Regardless, the Buckeyes have too much talent to let first-game misfires get in the way. Bowling Green will score, and the game might even be close for a while, but I expect the Buckeyes to pull away once they get their feet under them. I predict the Buckeyes start the 2016 season off with a 52-17 victory and move their focus on to Tulsa next week.

The Season

Many others have said this too, but the youth and inexperience of this team reminds me of the 2014 squad, and we all know how that season ended. Do I think we’ll get to another National Championship again this season? It’s certainly possible, but I don’t think it’s very likely. A tough season with an early game at Oklahoma, back-to-back road games against Wisconsin and Penn State at night, culminating in games against Michigan State and Michigan will be too much – in my opinion – for the young Buckeyes to overcome. I see at 10-2 regular season and a New Year’s Six bowl game for the Buckeyes, and I’ll consider that a good season. Meyer is bringing in some serious talent, so the next few years should be a pretty special time to be a Buckeye fan.

A Fan’s Preseason Playoff Predictions

  • Clemson – With Heisman favorite Deshaun Watson and most of his offensive weapons back, there’s no reason to think the Tigers won’t win the ACC. They have a key game against Florida State, but the rest of their schedule should be winnable.
  • Alabama – I hesitate to put Alabama in here because their QB situation is still up in the air, but results don’t lie. Nick Saban has done a remarkable job no matter who’s throwing the ball, and I expect them to win the SEC again and make their third consecutive playoff appearance
  • Houston – Call me crazy, but I think the Cougars are going to surprise a lot of people this season. I say they take down Oklahoma early and then run the table the rest of the way to make it to the CFP. With Greg Ward returning at QB, I don’t see much drop-off from where they were last year.
  • Stanford – Three big games early against USC, UCLA, and Washington will tell the tale on the Cardinal. I like David Shaw as a head coach, and I think he’ll have them ready to compete and win the Pac-12 in their first season without Kevin Hogan running the offense. Heisman-hopeful Christian McCaffrey will be the workhorse on this team again this season.
A Fan’s Preseason Heisman Ballot

  • Watson – He had a claim to the award last year, but came in third behind Derrick Henry and Christian McCaffrey. Henry is off to the NFL, so Watson will resume his battle against McCaffrey for the trophy. I expect big numbers out of Watson again, but the defining game will be against FSU.
  • Christian McCaffrey – Mr. Does-It-All is back for his junior season, and Stanford will rely heavily on him for the majority of their offense. Under the direction of a new quarterback, McCaffrey should get quite a few carries, as well as receptions. If Stanford ends up in the playoff, expect last year’s runner-up to lay claim to the trophy.
  • Barrett – Two years ago he finished fifth after missing the second half of the last game of the season and the Big Ten Championship. This season, he leads an even younger team into battle with unproven weapons at running back and wide receiver. His calm demeanor and leadership prove he has what it takes to lead the Buckeyes, and I expect him to put up similar numbers to his 2014 campaign.
  • Leonard Fournette – I don’t see LSU making the playoff this year, but that doesn’t mean Fournette can’t make a big splash with his eye-popping numbers over the course of the season. Early tests against Wisconsin and Auburn and the late-season showdown with Alabama will be key in how voters see Fournette. He’ll run over mediocre teams like he did last year, but his performance in those big games will count the most.

The Buckeyes open their season at noon Saturday on BTN.

It’s back. It’s finally back. The Ohio State Buckeyes open the 2016 season ranked sixth nationally in the AP Poll, and will face off against the Bowling Green Falcons, who are coming off their second MAC Championship in three years.

For Ohio State, despite the loss of a dozen players to the NFL, expectations are high entering week one, owing to outstanding recruiting by Urban Meyer, who has led the conference in recruiting class rankings since he arrived in Columbus. Plus, it’s hard not to have high expectations with Meyer at the helm.

In four years as head coach, Meyer has amassed a 50-4 record, and has an 85 percent career win percentage which all started with two seasons at Bowling Green, where Meyer went 17-6 overall. Bowling Green is coming off a 10-4 season, but will be directed by a new head coach in Mike Jinks, who is replacing Dino Babers following the latter’s departure for Syracuse.

The big question for the Buckeyes heading into the season revolves around experience--or lack thereof. Of 85 scholarship players, 44 have never even been able to play in a Division I game, owing to the fact that they are either true or redshirt freshmen or transfers. While Bowling Green is no slouch, today’s noon kickoff should be a good opportunity for the young Buckeyes to gain valuable experience on the field.

When is the game and how can I watch?

Game Date/Time: Saturday, Sept. 3, 12 p.m.

Location: Ohio Stadium

TV: Big Ten Network

Online: BTN2Go

Radio: 97.1 FM/1460 AM

Where is GameDay this weekend?

As Lee Corso enters his 20th (!) season making headgear picks with College Gameday, the crew will open the season with a Big Ten-SEC matchup as they head to Lambeau Field to watch No. 5 LSU take on Wisconsin at 3:30. With two top-10 recruiting classes in the last two years, expectations are high for Les Miles and the Tigers, who are expected to contend with Alabama for the SEC West crown. Wisconsin, meanwhile, is coming off a 10-3 season in 2015, including a win over USC in the Holiday Bowl, but faces questions as they break in a new starting quarterback.

What’s the rest of the Big Ten slate look like?

With wins already by Indiana, Minnesota and Michigan State, the remaining 11 Big Ten teams are in action today, headlined by the LSU-Wisconsin matchup. No. 7 Michigan will face Hawaii at noon, and No. 17 Iowa has Miami (OH) following. Rutgers is taking on a ranked team, facing No. 14 Washington on the road at 2:00. Fresno State will also head to Lincoln to face Nebraska in the conference’s only week one night game at 8:00.

Here we are a day prior to the start of the 2016 season and with Bowling Green on deck we look ahead to seeing our Buckeyes in action. With the mass exodus that occurred after last season, Coach Meyer will be looking to replace the plethora of talent that he lost to the NFL Draft this season. Meyer has retained the services of 6 players that have returned for at least one more season at Ohio State and this will be by far his most challenging task while at the helm at Ohio State. Unfortunately for the rest of the country, Coach Meyer and his staff have to look no further than their depth chart at the talent that they have stockpiled throughout the years. They are secretly being developed while they wait patiently for their opportunity to take the reins from the upperclassmen that have left for the NLF or that have moved on after graduation. So in reality, the Buckeyes should be just fine, but with the influx of inexperienced and unproven players it will take some time for them to adjust.

Impact Players:

JT.png
J.T. Barrett:

Quarterback J.T. Barrett will return for his Redshirt Junior season and he will lead the charge for the Buckeyes. He will act as the key cog in the offense and he will usher in the new stable of starters across the offensive side of the ball. Barrett brings experience and leadership to the offense and Meyer and company will depend on him throughout the season. Barrett provides problems for opposing defenses with his innate ability to hit targets in stride, his ability to scramble, and his instincts when plays break down. He will not have the same weapons on offense from the previous two seasons, but Barrett will find ways to maximize and improve the talent around him. He will continue to make others around him better and provide leadership that is crucial to this season because during week 3 the Buckeyes will have a date at Norman and J.T. needs to use the first two weeks to fine tune his offense for the huge showdown with Oklahoma.

Mike Weber:

With all the drama during his recruitment, Mike Weber’s future with the Buckeyes remained in question for the remainder of his recruitment, but now two years after the fact he has secured the role as starter for Coach Meyer’s “Cadillac Position”. Weber will be the starter this year and after a great showing during this years spring game, I think he will become the next great Running Back that Ohio State will produce. Weber is a workhorse. He was the speed to blow past defenders and he has the power to run them over as well. He learned and developed under one of the greatest backs at Ohio State, Ezekiel Elliott. I look for Weber to come in with that lunch pail mentality and continue the legacy and tradition at Ohio State. For now, he will be an unproven commodity at Running Back and he will look to carve out his own path during his tenure at Ohio State.

CS.png
Curtis Samuel:

Samuel was singled out by Urban Meyer during the offseason and he stated that Curtis Samuel is his best playmaker on offense. That comes with high praise considering what the Buckeyes lost after last season. Samuel will split time at multiple positions. He will be tasked to play in the Slot, some Running Back and he will be the starter at the H-Back position. Needless to say, we will get a huge dosage of Curtis Samuel and we can only hope that he will become that go-t0 player for Urban Meyer’s new look offense.

PE.png
Pat Elflein:

One of two returning starters on the offensive line, Pat Elflein will shift from Guard to Center and he will look to guide and mentor the three new slobs that had earned starting spots alongside himself and Right Guard, Billy Price. Elflein will provide leadership and stability for Michael Jordan, Jamarco Jones and Isaiah Prince. He will ensure they are up to standard for the new look offensive line. It also helps that J.T. Barrett sees a familiar face along that young offensive line. With the move to Center, Elflein will be involved in every facet of the game. He will call out and adjust the protection as needed and he will be snapping the rock to Barrett. New challenges will arise and he will be all for it.

RM.png
Raekwon McMillan:

The proud tradition of Middle Linebackers continues as McMillan returns for what most assume will be his final season at Ohio State. Once again, McMillan will be the Quarterback of the defense and he will provide experience and stability to the unit. With Daron Lee and Joshua Perry moving onto the NFL, he looks to lead new starters, Chris Worley and Dante Booker. Remember the term reload? Yeah Worley and Booker have different traits that make them lethal and McMillan will help them along the way and similar to the offense, it will take some time. McMillan would never let the Silver Bullets mantra and tradition slip away, so we will all have to be patient with the lack of experience. He along with the coaching staff will prepare them for the grind of yet another season.

The Opposition:

Bowling Green seems to always have a potent, if not lethal offense. With Senior signal caller, James Knapke, they will look to utilize Senior Wide Receiver Ronnie Moore in every possible way they can. It’ll be a tough task to do, but with the lack of experience on Ohio States defense, who knows. I for one see them putting up at least two touchdowns during this contest, but Ohio State will be looking to unleash hell on the hapless Falcons. With a lot to prove, I can see both scenarios play out, but this is why I love College Football. Hell, we almost witnessed Tennessee get wrecked and upset at home this week, so why not right?

On defense, Bowling Green boasts a pair of playmaking linebackers that will lead this years unit. Austin Valdez, a Middle Linebacker who had earned 1st Team All-Mac honors and Trenton Greene, an Outside Linebacker who had earned 2nd Team All-MAC honors look to stop the Buckeyes dead in their tracks. It will take a ton of effort from both of these players, but it might be possible. The Buckeyes have three new starters on the offensive line and they are young and inexperienced. They have a new Cadillac Back and new playmakers starting at the Wide Receiver.

Prediction:

After considering everything, I see this game getting ugly before halftime. Ohio State will be playing at home and Buckeye Nation will come in full force. The noise levels will be insane throughout the game. The Buckeyes will start slow, but they will piece together, a blow out to start the season on the right foot. I am not taking away from the Falcons, but it’s hard to see Ohio State losing this early in the season. Couple that, Urban Meyer being the Head Coach and the 4-0 All-Time record against Bowling Green and you have this: 44-17 Ohio State over Bowling Green
