Urban Meyer says Ohio State must be tough to beat OU.

After Wednesday afternoon’s practice, Ohio State head football coach Urban Meyer addressed the gaggle of assembled media to discuss his team’s preparations for its first major test of the 2016 season. On Saturday, the No. 3 Buckeyes travel to Norman, OK to take on the No. 14 Oklahoma Sooners, who are looking to revive their season after a 33-23 opening week loss to Houston.

Coming off of two lopsided victories, the Buckeyes will be stepping up in competition, taking on one of the most storied and successful programs in college football history.

Injury updates

Linebacker Dante Booker’s been downgraded to questionable for Saturday’s game (MCL sprain), and Jerome Baker has practiced well in the OLB position in his place.

The week of practice

When asked about how he thinks that the week of practice has gone, Meyer said, “I love it. Our effort’s been outstanding.” He added that they will need it on Saturday, because of how talented and well-coached Oklahoma is.

Meyer mentioned that he has yet to see enough from his wide receivers to determine who the top playmakers are, but he did stress that J.T. Barrett has a number of good targets at WR.

Thoughts on Oklahoma

Meyer reiterated that Houston didn’t run the ball well against OU, but he did say that it was helpful to see a similar offense play the Sooners to get an idea as to how they will line up in certain situations.

Meyer noted that OU gives QB Baker Mayfield a lot of responsibility, “He knows that offense very well, you can tell... He’s had some outstanding plays... when nothing’s there. It’s tough to bring him down.”

Meyer said that Barrett will audible this weekend completely with hand signals, which should make changing the play in a hostile environment much easier than it otherwise would be.

When asked what he liked about Sooners’ head coach Bob Stoops, Meyer said, “I like that he’s from Ohio, and Northeast Ohio specifically.” He also notes that they have similar family and childhood backgrounds. He went on to credit Stoops with being one of the first successful head coaches to show him that having a healthy work-life balance is possible.

Meyer said that to win this Saturday’s game the Buckeyes must have toughness. “This is going to be one of those prize fights.”

Mental health interview

When asked about his recent Bleacher Report interview about battling mental health issues, Meyer said that he was convinced to do it when the reporter said, “I think we can help some people.”

The former Buckeye linebacker took an L in Week 1, but he’s ready to be an impact player.

"The consensus from Ohio State’s Department of Athletics is that Barnes is the only football player — and perhaps one of a few Ohio State athletes in any sport — to play while enrolled in a PhD program.”

- Robin Chenoweth, OSU.edu

If you’re not the kind of Ohio State fan who has the entire roster memorized, first team to scout team, you might not know the name Jarrod Barnes. Barnes plans to change that—if not on the football field, then off it.

Barnes is Ohio State’s first ever football player to play for the team while simultaneously enrolled in a PhD program. A walk-on last season, Barnes has earned two degrees in the last four years between the University of Louisville and Ohio State. Now he’s in a doctoral program, and his focus is a commendable one: namely, working with talented young athletes on “reversing a cultural mindset” that places them in a box, one which values their brawn over their brains.

“It goes back to fear of failure. In class, you don’t want to seem dumb if you don’t know the answer so you don’t answer and don’t participate. You’re afraid to fulfill that stereotype,” he told OSU.edu. Barnes, who found himself the only black male or athlete in his rigorous anatomy class at Louisville, quickly realized just how expansive this problem—the stigmas and pressures that keep young athletes from challenging themselves athletically—really was.

You might not get a chance to see Barnes, a safety, blowing up pass plays over the middle or stuffing the run on creative blitzes on Saturdays. But if his trajectory to this point is any indication, you’re still going to be hearing from him on a big stage sooner or later.

“This is my first year in the NFL, so I'm just eating it all up and soaking it all in. ”

- Darron Lee, New York Jets linebacker, via NJ.com’s Connor Hughes

Through two games this season, Ohio State’s defense has looked so stifling—13 points total allowed, eight turnovers created—that it’s almost possible to forget just how much talent Luke Fickell’s unit lost to the NFL in April. One of the biggest losses was outside linebacker Darron Lee, a former high school quarterback who became one of the most explosive linebackers in the country. Lee was taken by the New York Jets, and this week, NJ.com caught up with him to see how he’s adjusting to life in the city and the NFL.

Lee said that he got his “rookie moment” out of the way in Week 1, when he took a bad angle in coverage and allowed Bengals tight end C.J. Uzomah past him for a big gain. Lee’s lateral speed and field vision made even the idea of anyone getting past him for a big gain in college seem ridiculous; this, more than anything, should highlight just how great the gap between NCAA and NFL really is.

The Jets face off against the Buffalo Bills this Thursday, who feature two of Lee’s former teammates, QB Cardale Jones and DE Adolphus Washington. All three former Buckeyes are rookies looking to cement their footing in the league. Lee said that the game he’s looking forward to most this season is against “any team that my former teammates are on,” so look for him to come out hungry on Thursday night.

“Every player has one of those games where something - I don't know if it's divine intervention - but everybody has one of those games where everything just goes right. That game for me was Ohio State.”

- Uwe Von Schamann, former Oklahoma kicker

2016 won’t mark the first time that Ohio State and Oklahoma have faced off in the season’s third week. The two iconic programs also faced off in September of 1977, each helmed by a coach even more iconic than the current head man. Buckeye fans, particularly those who were around for the ‘77 tilt, will be watching this weekend with gritted teeth, hoping for a better result than what Ohio State got when Barry Switzer’s Sooners took on Woody Hayes’ Scarlet and Gray.

ESPN’s oral history of that game in Columbus is a must-read. Woody is no longer around to offer his thoughts on the result, which would surely be laced with profanity, but a host of former Buckeyes and Sooners talked through how OU broke OSU’s heart. Ohio State erased a 20-0 deficit to take a 28-20 lead after starting OU quarterback Thomas Lott went down with a knee injury. When Oklahoma found the end zone with the game’s end near, Ohio State suffocated the two-point try, and the victory looked assured. But Uwe von Schamann, the Sooner kicker, had other plans.

Von Schamann’s onside kick was perfect, and Oklahoma recovered the ball after a brief scuffle. A few plays later the Sooners were in field goal range, and von Schamann, who a teammate described as having “ice-water veins,” nailed the forty-one yard try with ease. (According to several Buckeye special-teamers, the kick was almost blocked, but close only counts in horseshoe and hand grenades.)

Here’s hoping the Buckeyes aren’t destined for similar heartbreak this Saturday.

Shannon and Chip bring some great content again this week. Bleacher Report Mag had an amazing article about the Meyer family opening up in regards to Urban’s mental health. I’m not the Lone Wolf is an excellent read packed full of insight that Shannon and Chip took a lot of things from.

Shannon talked about his first day working at The Shoe, he sounds like he is still amazed and thrilled by being there.

The guys discuss the Tulsa game that happened. The slow start that ended with a storm of interceptions. The delayed halftime that allowed the Buckeyes to have more time to make adjustments. The second half was a tale of what fans watched in the Bowling Green game.

For this week Shannon and Chip are joined by Ryan Aber of The Oklahoman. Ryan brought a ton of insight into the Oklahoma program including that the Sooners are in a must win situation.

The #AskMotSaG segment and the Pick’Em segment have some great stuff along with the rest of the show.

OHIO2-150x150.jpg

Life is full of moments in time. In many instances, it is that one moment which you will be judged by. It’s the one interaction with a stranger at the grocery store, the simple greeting you give to a co-worker walking down the hall, or even the holding of a door for another parent at your child’s school. These little moments throughout the day define what impression you are giving off of who you want to be.

This weekend, two of the most prestigious universities in all of college football will come together and meet in Norman, Oklahoma. The AP ranks these two football teams as the top two programs of all-time. Needless to say, fans from both sides have been looking forward to this since it was announced.

While the two blue bloods meet on the gridiron, another meeting is happening in and outside of Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium…the fan bases. Here is where I am going to give you a simple task. It is one I use every time I go to a Ohio State game and is fairly simple…don’t be a douche bag.

Every fan base has them. Sometimes they wear a cowboy hat and cape which makes it very easy to spot. Other times, they blend in and look like any other fan wearing a jersey or team colors. It is these ones that sneak up on you and mold your opinion of an entire fan base. Let me tell you about two interactions which have completed cause me to hate fairly insignificant fan bases; California and Arkansas.

It was 2011, in New Orleans, when I found out Arkansas had a football team. They were led by former Wolverine Ryan Mallet and had somehow navigated their way through the SEC schedule to play in the Sugar Bowl against the Buckeyes. Being in the military, I usually have numerous friends for each fan base that I come across but with Arkansas I had never met a fan prior to this meeting.

On game day we made our way down to the stadium and was immediately bombarded with Razorback fans letting us know how much the SEC was better than Ohio State. This was not a huge deal for me…I lived in Florida at the time and worked with numerous SEC fans. At some point..it becomes annoying. No matter where we went whether it was the bathroom, a line for beer, a line to get in the stadium…there was an Arkansas fan there screaming about how great they were because on their conference affiliation. At no point during that entire game was there an actual conversation with any Arkansas fan. This was very unfortunate for me because one of my favorite things about going to bowl games and big-time games is interacting with other fan bases and trying to find out more about their team and their school. This entire day has forever made me not respect Arkansas.

Now we move on to 2013, when Ohio State traveled to Berkeley, California to face the Cal Bears. I was pretty excited for this game. I have family that lives in the Bay Area and they graduated from California so it was perfect for us to fly out there and go to the game with them. With that said, we sat in the alumni section of California. I never thought it would be a big deal because this was a pretty low threat game in which Ohio State was supposed to win easily. If you remember this was also the game where Ohio State took over that stadium so I was expecting very little drama.

My first negative interaction with California fans was as we were making our way from the subway to the stadium. I am walking with my then 10-year-old son, my wife, and our aunt and uncle who were decked out in Cal gear. Not exactly a murderer’s row of Buckeye fans. We weren’t drinking and we were minding our own business just walking to the stadium. That is when two college-age kids decided to walk up right behind us and begin talking about how they wanted to murder a Ohio State fan today. To quote them “I’m not even playing, I want to actual murder an Ohio State fan today.” They began to go into detail talking just loud enough that my 10-year-old could hear. He never brought it up but I felt him squeeze my hand just a little bit harder hearing what they were saying. We kept on walking…I pretended like I didn’t hear them but in the back of my mind I did…and I was judging an entire fan base.

As we got to our seats inside of the stadium, we realized that we were sitting behind the student section. This was not a big deal for us. We had a couple of families around us, mixed Ohio State and California, and we began having small talk with all of them. When the game started, the student section in front of us stood as the game began. We were OK with that…we stand during games too. So we stood up and began watching the game just as everything was normal. It was about six minutes into the game when an older drunk gentleman standing behind my wife stepped up onto her bench and began yelling into her ear. He was incredibly upset that she would not sit down…never mind the fact that everyone in front of her was standing. At this point, I removed my wife from the situation and placed myself into the situation and began discussing the matter with the older man. The older man was with his family and they quickly pulled him away and took him out of the stands as they were profusely apologizing to my family. That moment, along with the moments walking to the stadium, has forever made me hate California as a team and as a fan base for no good reason at all. I realize I only met a small sample but that does not stop me.

As a fan base, we are going to be judged by every single interaction that we have in Norman. These are two great teams and two great fan bases coming together to enjoy a great game. Nobody cares if you think the Big 12 is horrible…just as you shouldn’t care if the Big Ten is horrible. These are things that you do not need to bring up. These are things that if you bring up you may be a douche bag.

If you are sitting around Oklahoma fans during the game or if you’re out to a restaurant take some time and talk with a Sooner fan. Find out what some of their traditions are or where you should go before the game or where you should go after the game. This is a giant celebration of two great teams and should be treated as such.

We are one of the biggest fan bases around. We travel to every big game, we travel to every away game… simply put we make our presence known. Do your part to make our presence known in a memorable and positive way.

Will past recruiting misses come back to haunt the Buckeyes?

The season is young, but it’s hard not to be impressed with Ohio State’s defense so far. Sure, the competition hasn’t been stiff through two games. Tulsa and Bowling Green aren’t world beaters.

Still, both programs run up-tempo spread offenses and should rank toward the top of their respective conferences in total offense this season. Yet neither scored a touchdown in their visits to the Horseshoe while the Buckeyes’ defense scored three times.

That’s what happens when you’re able to replace first round draft picks with four and five-star recruits at a place like Ohio State.

The Buckeyes will likely never operate at a talent deficit this season, but there are a handful of teams capable of stressing Ohio State’s defense with athletes, and not just scheme. Oklahoma is one of those programs, and the Sooners will be an early indicator into just how good the Silver Bullets can be this season.

“This is big boy football now,” said defensive coordinator Greg Schiano during Monday’s media session.

On paper, not even the prestigious Sooners can match the talent that Urban Meyer has collected in Columbus. Oklahoma has averaged the nation’s 15th best recruiting class over the last four cycles, per the 247sports recruiting composite. Meyer has reeled in three top-five classes during that time.

That is not to discredit Bob Stoops and the boys from Norman. Oklahoma returned 14 starters from a squad that reached the College Football Playoff a year ago, and boasts one of the most dangerous backfields in the sport, led by quarterback Baker Mayfield.

Oftentimes the Sooners’ celebrated signal caller is flanked by a pair of devastating running backs in Samaje Perine and Joe Mixon. Perine once rushed for 427 yards in one game, an NCAA record. Mixon might be even more explosive.

And there lies the complication for Schiano as he prepares his unit for Saturday’s showdown; Oklahoma’s strongest personnel group is designed to attack Ohio State’s weakest link.

While it’s true that few coaches can rival Meyer’s recruiting prowess, Ohio State’s ability to sign elite defensive tackles has resembled that of a middling Midwest program in recent years. The Buckeyes have made a habit of chasing the big-name, big-bodied behemoths from southern states, only to be left at the alter come national signing day.

As a result, Meyer and his staff have often fallen back on their second, third, or even fourth option at defensive tackle. Take the 2015 recruiting cycle for an example, when the Buckeyes struck out swinging pursuing a pair of five-stars, and then settled on Robert Landers and Davon Hamilton in response. Landers was ranked as the 476th best recruit in his class. Landers was unranked. Both will see significant playing time as redshirt freshmen this Saturday.

Recruiting rankings aren’t everything. Some of Ohio State’s best players during Meyer’s tenure were once unheralded recruits. But it takes vision to see a Big Ten star where others see a MAC-level talent. And from there a tremendous level of coaching is required to make that vision a reality.

There might not be a better position coach in the country to carry out that mission than Larry Johnson. Before coming to Columbus in 2014, Johnson was Penn State’s defensive line coach for 14 years. During that time he developed five first-team All Americans.

Johnson’s ability to quickly develop a young defensive line will come to the forefront this Saturday evening. The Buckeyes struggled at times last weekend defending Tulsa’s run game, and the Golden Hurricane’s exposed Ohio State’s over-pursuing tackles on trap plays multiple times in the first quarter.

As the game settled down so did the OSU interior line while showing signs of growth. A notable play came in the second quarter, when Landers demolished a Tulsa misdirection run play, flashing the ability that Johnson likely envisioned when he recruited the young wrecking ball of a man.

“He’s so low to the ground it’s hard to block him,” said linebacker Raekwon McMillan of Landers. “He has great get off on the ball.”

It’s pivotal that Landers and his counterparts get off blocks early and often against Oklahoma so that McMillan and the linebackers can attack Perine and Mixon behind the chains. The Sooners utilize several of the same trap concepts that Tulsa deployed last weekend, and run much of their play-action off of that look.

Mayfield garners more fanfare than any other Sooner, and rightfully so. The former Heisman finalist plays with more creativity than any quarterback in the country, and has the unique ability to see a 40-yard touchdown where most see a five-yard loss.

That ability is amplified when defenses face run-pass conflicts on second or third-and-short. When Oklahoma’s running game is stifled on early downs, however, it forces Mayfield to become a more traditional pocket passer, mitigating his threat.

Some fans have questioned whether this game with Oklahoma is consequential to any of Ohio State’s goals. As a non-conference opponent, the Sooners have no impact on the Buckeyes’ bid for a Big Ten title. And with the conference looking as strong as ever, OSU could probably survive a loss here, win out and make the playoff.

But what if the Buckeyes fall because the interior line cannot contain a dynamic rushing attack? The days of playing Bowling Green and Tulsa are over. The likes of Wisconsin, Michigan State and Michigan are peering around the corner, with powerful run games of their own in tow. Ohio State’s ability to stifle Mixon and Perine could foreshadow what’s to come in conference play, for better or worse.

Like Schiano said, it’s time for big boy football. The Buckeyes will need their biggest boys to prove their worth on Saturday.
