Despite a 77-10 win, Meyer isn’t willing to call his offense ‘great’.

Two days after opening the Ohio State football season with a 77-10 victory over Bowling Green, Urban Meyer took to the podium to talk about the young Buckeyes who stood out and how the team is getting ready for Tulsa. There were so many questions about how the young players would react to their first collegiate game in The ‘Shoe, and they answered back in stellar fashion.

The sideline Saturday was filled with alumni new and old, with some of Urban Meyer’s first senior class in attendance to see their former coach take on their Alma mater. Despite it being a Big Ten-MAC matchup, there was a lot to take in from the new and improved offense — an effort that landed J.T. Barrett conference honors as Offensive Player of the Week.

  • J.T. Barrett and Curtis Samuel were named co-players of the game. Champions of the week were Mike Weber, Terry McLaurin — who will play more — and K.J. Hill. Kicker Tyler Durbin was the Player of the Game, and despite all the jokes Meyer makes, he “loves that kid” and applauded his full effort on Saturday.
  • Meyer described the guys as “pretty good” but wouldn’t go much further than that. He acknowledged there were “some disappointments” and went on to explain, “I think Corey Smith should be better than he is.”
  • He went on to mention that there still needs to be improvement with the wide receivers. “We want to play fast, play a lot of people,” Meyer noted, especially at wide receiver on playing 10 wide receivers on Saturday.
  • Meyer gives credit for Barrett’s opener to the number of reps he’s had throughout the spring and camp ahead of the season. Not only is he a veteran, but he knows this is his team and is prepared to lead it.
  • Asked if there were any teachable moments -- especially when you win by 67 — but Meyer scoffed and said there were some great teaching moments. He noted that only one lineman graded out a winner, but no wide receivers earned that honor.
  • On the defensive backs, “I think they did ok”. He acknowledged though that more will be learned after Week 2, as they’ll face “more of a test [this] Saturday”.
  • Meyer said Ohio State expects to lead the conference in rushing this season.
Injury updates

Tracy Sprinkle went down hard during the 2016 home opener, and is expected to miss significant time. He had surgery yesterday, and isn’t even expected to be back for a bowl game.

Break news this morning out of the B1G media center. Ohio State QB J.T. Barrett was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week after his dominating 7 total touchdown performance against Bowling Green this last weekend in Columbus.

Ohio State’s offense set a school record for yards gained in a single game during the Buckeyes dominate outing.

Well deserved.

J.T. Barrett’s 2016 season couldn’t have gotten off to a much better start.

Despite throwing a pick-six on OSU’s first series of the game, Barrett was surgical and near perfect there after en route to a personal best three passing touchdowns in a single quarter. For his troubles, Barrett’s the Big Ten’s Week 1 Offensive Player of the Week.

Barrett finished Saturday’s 77-10 demolition of Bowling Green with a school record seven touchdowns as he improved his record as the Buckeyes’ starter to an impressive 16-2.

The Texas native finished his three quarters of action 21-of-31 for 349 yards and six touchdowns through the air with six rushes for 30 more yards and a QB scramble for six to his name as well.

Joining Barrett in the awards department is Michigan senior linebacker (and Trotwood-Madison product) LB Mike McCray, who led the Wolverines in tackles in their 63-3 win over Hawaii.

Wisconsin’s Rafael Gaglianone, who hit the game winning field goal for the Badgers against LSU just months after losing close friend Nebraska punter Sam Foltz in a car crash, was the special teams player of the week.

Iowa defensive end Anthony Nelson was the conference’s freshman of the week.

Welcome to your tri-weekly look at all things Ohio State recruiting. Let’s get started!

Big Offensive Tackle Offer for 2018:

Before the Buckeyes big win over the weekend they were out on the recruiting trail still, and made an offer to 4-star OT Rasheed Walker from Waldorf, Maryland. Walker is ranked as the 9th best athlete out of the state of Maryland and is the #20 offensive tackle in the class of 2018.

Walker currently holds 8 offers, and received two others this past week other than the Buckeyes. The Tar Heels of North Carolina and the Gators of Florida also came calling this week. He has one crystal ball projection in for Maryland right now, but with more national attention coming his way that seems like it might change.

Another 2018 Offensive Lineman Hears from Buckeyes:

Last Thursday the Buckeyes reached into the state of Florida and offered 2018 Offensive Guard prospect Cleveland Reed out of Fort Meade HS. Reed is a 4-star prospect currently reporting 10 offers. He has offers from his home state schools Florida, FIU, USF and Miami.

Cleveland Reed, 2018 OL (@FMMinerFootball), receives an offer from #OhioState@55clevelandreed#H2Athletes

— H2 Athletes (@H2Athletes) September 2, 2016

Reed is currently rated as the #12 offensive guard prospect in the nation, and the 39th overall prospect out of the talent rich state of Florida. He currently has one crystal ball in for Florida.

Top 2018 Target Out for the Season:

Five-star running back Jaelen Gill suffered what appears to be a season ending injury in Westerville’s 23-6 loss to Gahana on Friday. Gill broke his fibula in the first half of the game.

Gill is rated as the second best all-purpose back in the class of 2018, and is one of Ohio State’s main targets for this class.

He will still have a senior season to compete, but the loss for the Westerville program that has to play without their star has to be heartbreaking. Their head coach Kyle Stout spoke to the Westerville News and Public Opinion:

“We still have a season to play, but it’s a real tough kid to replace,” Stout said. “Your heart hurts for him. You know the time that he puts in year-round. He’s a junior captain for us. It always hurts when something happens to a player like that. It’s not a good situation.”

The latest on the Buckeyes Weekend Visitors:

The Buckeyes are no strangers to the state up north, and have invaded Cass Tech to pluck Mike Weber and Joshua Alabi from right under Michigan and Michigan States noses. They don’t seem to be done up there as they had two visitors at the Bowling Green game on Saturday. Running back Jaren Mangham and cornerback Xavier Goldsmith were both in attendance and spoke to 11W about their time there over the weekend.

“I had a great time at Ohio State,” Mangham told Eleven Warriors. “I like the environment. Everyone was so nice. They were all so positive [and] everyone was so supportive for their team. It was awesome.”

Both guys are prospects in the class of 2019 and Goldsmith reports 10 offers while Mangham lists 5.

The Buckeyes also hosted 4-star wide receiver from Wayne, Ohio, L’Christian Smith. Smith spoke with Landof10.com about his weekend trip to Columbus.

“This is actually the first visit since they offered me,” Smith said when asked how this visit felt different from previous trips to Columbus, Ohio. “Now it’s like I have the offer, I could go here and that could be me on the field.”

“Their focus with me is just letting me know all the time that I am their top target in my class,” he said. “My visit was phenomenal and I had a great time like I always do.”

Smith has 12 offers currently and is ranked as the #3 athlete in the country and the #3 overall prospect in the class of 2018 in the state of Ohio. Right now he has 4 crystal ball predictions in and they are split between Ohio State and Michigan State.

The football and basketball Buckeyes had their handful over the weekend.

With football back at it, it isn’t the only season fans will be keeping a close eye on. It’s also recruiting visit season. Like many other schools across the country Ohio State took full advantage of the beautiful weekend weather.

Urban Meyer and the Ohio State football team didn’t just play host to the Bowling Green Falcons on Saturday, they also had a number of recruits in the stands getting an up close look at what it would be like to suit up for a national power.

Headlining the list of prospects on hand for the Buckeyes dominating performance against Bowling Green was key class of 2018 target L’Christian “Blue” Smith (Dayton, OH / Wayne).

Making the trip down to Columbus once again, Smith, who could play basketball on the college level, had the chance to mingle with coach Meyer and crew, but also members of the OSU basketball staff.

A four-star recruit, the Buckeyes would love to bring the 6-foot-6, 205-pound standout into the fold, but face some pretty stiff competition for his pledge. Michigan State, and programs such as Alabama, Michigan, and Notre Dame have offered Smith a chance to attend their University.

Will Smith end up in Columbus or will head out of state? We’ll probably be waiting awhile for that answer, but stick with Land-Grant Holy Land for the latest.

5-star small forward visits OSU

Arguably Thad Matta and the basketball Buckeyes top remaining class of 2017 target, Troy Brown (Las Vegas,NV/Centennial) was in Columbus over the weekend taking his official visit with OSU.

After checking out what Columbus had to offer, Brown isn’t done making trips to college campuses. The third small forward, and 13th overall prospect in the senior class, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, will now visit Alabama (Sept 9-10), Oregon (Sept 23-25), Kansas (Sept 30 - Oct 2) and Georgetown (Oct 5-7).

Standing 6-foot-6 and over 200 pounds, Brown is a mismatch at numerous spots on the court. As a junior, the five-star talent averaged 15 points and 9 rebounds a contest for Centennial High School – who finished the season off with a final record of 24-4.

Quick Hits

  • Current Ohio State commit Shaun Wade (Jacksonville, FL / Trinity Catholic) visited Florida on Saturday for the Gators game against UMass. Wade, a longtime Buckeye pledge, has flirted with other programs throughout his recruitment. Alabama and Notre Dame are among the other programs the 2017 five-star cornerback is considering.
  • After locking up your vote last weekend, class of 2017 commit Brendon White (Powell,OH / Olentangy Liberty) ran away with the Land-Grant Holy Land MVP of the Week. White and his soon-to-be OSU teammates were back at it over the last few days. Which future Buckeye did enough to grab the award this go around?

A dozen former Ohio State players fell victim to the final 53-man roster cuts.

The 2016 NFL regular season is less than a week away and teams have made their final roster cuts. There were quite a few former Ohio State players who were waived ahead of the final 53-man rosters, but two of the 2016 undrafted free agents beat the odds and solidified their place in the league.

While there is still a chance for a waived player to be picked up by another squad, most of the 12 players cut have been on the receiving end of that news more than once in their short NFL careers. In addition to the 12 players cut, three were placed on IR/PUP lists and 37 made final active rosters.

With so many Buckeyes in the league, there will be few games played without at least one former Ohio State player in the starting lineup.

Waived/Released

Despite collegiate success, utilization doesn't always translate to the NFL, as evidenced by a few of the repeats on the waived list the past few years. Players like Chimdi Chekwa, Boom Herron and DeVier Posey have bounced around to a few different teams in the past 12 months, and still haven't found a landing spot. Herron tweeted after news of his release, hinting toward facing a future without football.

Might be that time...

— Boom Herron (@BOOMHERRON1) September 2, 2016

Two of the 2016 undrafted free agents -- Chase Farris and Joel Hale -- didn't make it past the first round of cuts despite additional snaps in the preseason due to injuries. Doran Grant and Jake Stoneburner spent the 2015 season on (and occasionally off) the practice squad, but were officially let go ahead of the 2016 season.

Two of the three players heading into the 2016 season injured are second year players Michael Bennett and Devin Smith. Smith might be in a precarious situation when he finally rejoins the Jets, as rookie -- and former Ohio State teammate -- Jalin Marshall, has stepped into the role meant for Smith. The second year player was never able to click on special teams and spent most of his rookie year injured -- with limited production and results, his spot could be in jeopardy upon his return.

Marshall showed off in the preseason for the Jets on both offense and special teams; his 80-plus yard kick return in Week 1 earned notice from the coaching staff. Powell likewise showed off in his NFL debut pulling in his first interception as the newest member of the Legion of Boom in Seattle.

If you went into this game expecting to see plenty of mistakes by the Buckeyes, I am sorry you were disappointed. With the most inexperienced team in the FBS, the Buckeyes were sure to have a few growing pains. Luckily they all happened in the first few possessions. After that they went on to have a game that most people won’t soon forget.

After a little turbulence in the opening possession, the offense really took off and showed no mercy toward the Bowling Green State Falcons. The Buckeyes finished a record-setting day by piling up 776 total yards — breaking the previously held record of 716 yards set in 1930 against Mount Union.

J.T. Barrett showed why he should be on everyone’s short list for the Heisman this year. The junior signal-caller went 21 for 31 with 349 yards passing. Barrett also set a record of his own by scoring 7 total touchdowns (6 passing and 1 rushing). What makes it even more impressive is the fact that he did all this in just two and a half quarters.

With Zeke off to the NFL, there was a lot of speculation about his replacement. The tandem backfield of Mike Weber Jr., and Curtis Samuel didn’t let Buckeye fans down. Weber made a serious statement with his first run by breaking a tackle and then running through another defender. He ended the day with 19 carries for 136 yards. Curtis Samuel was all over the field for the Buckeyes; he rushed for 84 yards, but he also had 177 yards receiving.

The only real negative that I saw while watching the game was ball security. Barrett’s pick six, Wilson muffing a punt and Weber losing the ball after being tackled. Those mistakes prove that there is still room to get better for the play makers on the offensive side of the ball. Had the muffed punt not gone out of bounds, and the loose ball been a fumble, this score could have been a little closer.

We didn’t get to see much of the defense since they were on the field for 21 minutes, but what we did see was very promising. The secondary was playing lights out, only allowing 175 yards through the air and collecting three interceptions. The most impressive coming from Malik Hooker with a one-handed tipped deflection that he turned into an interception. The Silver Bullets only allowed 69 yards on the ground against the pass-heavy Bowling Green offense.

COLUMBUS, OH – SEPTEMBER 3: Curtis Samuel #4 of the Ohio State Buckeyes slips past James Sanford #4 of the Bowling Green Falcons to score a touchdown during the third quarter on September 3, 2016 at Ohio Stadium in Columbus, Ohio. Buckeye Leaves

Offense: Curtis Samuel

After the game Coach Meyer called the junior from the Bronx his first true hybrid player. Samuel proved he is ready to be the x-factor on offense in 2016. He definitely showed that he is willing (and able) to take on the responsibility of the offensive work horse. His 261 total yards and three touchdowns proved that he is going to be a vital part of the 2016 season.

Defense: Malik Hooker

Did you see this man get up in the air higher than air jordan or any of the Michigan defenders that wore the jumpman on their Uniforms on Saturday? Malik Hooker is a gifted athlete that is quickly molding into a strong defensive back. He had four solo tackles and two interceptions on Saturday to go with several pass break ups.

But the line is already down to 26 at some books.

Ohio State absolutely clobbered their first opponent of the season, Bowling Green, surpassing even the most optimistic expectations. Their reward after hanging 77 points? Another big spread, as the folks in Las Vegas like the Buckeyes to beat their next opponent, big.

Per VegasInsider, Ohio State opens at a 28.5 point favorite against Tulsa. The site also lists a “Vegas Consensus” line, which is a teensy bit more conservative, at Ohio State -26.

Tulsa had a big opening game of their own, dominating San Jose State, 45-10, so they’ll be heading into the Ohio State game with some confidence. Even though Tulsa runs a similar offense and was projected to be of similar quality to Bowling Green, expecting a margin as vast as last week might be a little ambitious, especially given how young Ohio State remains.

The Buckeyes aren’t the only Big Ten team facing a big line in Week 2. VegasInsider lists Michigan as a 34.5 point favorite over UCF, Wisconsin a 24 point favorite over Akron, and Iowa a 18 point favorite over hated rival, Iowa State.

Almost an afterthought in the 2012 recruiting class, Pat Elflein has gone from relative unknown 3-star recruit to leader and captain of the Ohio State Buckeyes in his five years on campus. He returned to Ohio State for his senior year when the majority of the class he came in with decided to head for the NFL. One might argue that getting Elflein back on campus for his senior year was the biggest recruiting win for Urban Meyer last season even with the #4 overall recruiting class in America. Elflein joins junior Billy Price as the lone returning starters on a young offensive line that will look to protect J.T. Barrett and company all season long. Let’s take a look back at how Pat got to where he is today in this week’s Senior Spotlight.

In 2011 Pat was a 3-star recruit out of Pickerington, Ohio which is a city just outside of Columbus. He was listed as the 55th best offensive guard in the country and 62nd best prospect in the state of Ohio for the 2012 recruiting class. Pat was a three-sport athlete at Pickerington North, obtaining 12 varsity letters in football, wrestling and track. He was named in football to the all-Ohio Capital Conference, all-Central District and the Dispatch all-Metro teams.

Elflein was recruited mainly by Luke Fickell in the aftermath of the firing of Jim Tressel. Elflein camped at Ohio State and earned an offer, and pledged not long after in July. Fickell then gave way to Urban Meyer and had to convince Meyer that Elflein was worthy of becoming an Ohio State Buckeye. Meyer joined the Buckeyes in November and didn’t have much time to work with, and ended up keeping Pat in this class.

It was almost a certainty that Elflein would be redshirted coming into his freshman year, and a foot injury kept him sidelined for the 2012 season.

2013 would turn out very differently. Pat played sparingly throughout the season, including a season high 57 snaps against Florida A&M early in the season. He managed to get into every game that season, but his turning point came in the Buckeyes 42-41 victory in Ann Arbor. Marcus Hall was the starting right guard all season, however he was ejected from the game during a fight in the first half of the game, causing Elflein to come into a hostile environment and help anchor the offensive line. He would shine that day, and earn the start in the Big Ten Championship game when Marcus Hall was suspended, and never looked back.

His sophomore season would certainly turn out to be one to remember. Pat started in all 15 games for the Buckeyes that season leading a seasoned offensive line. Although he started the season at left guard he moved to right guard after three games and finished the season there. He paved the way along with the offensive line to a national top 10 ranking in rushing offense and helped lead the Buckeyes to the first ever College Football Playoff National Championship. He helped lead the offense to Ohio State records in touchdowns, points scored, passing yards and passing touchdowns. He ended the season by being named to the All-Big Ten First Team by the leagues coaches.

The Buckeyes came into 2015 with high expectations, and again Pat helped anchor the line that led the Buckeyes to a 12-1 overall record and a season ending win in the Fiesta Bowl against Notre Dame. Pat started all 13 games again for the Buckeyes and alongside Jacoby Boren, Taylor Decker, Billy Price and Chase Farris. That group finished the season as the number one team in the Big Ten in rushing yards per game and second in the conference in scoring per game. Elflein again earned accolades after the season garnering second-team All American awards from Sports Illustrated and the Associated Press. He was also named a first team all-Big Ten Conference player by the coaches and the media. It was thought that he would end up testing the waters and entering his name into the NFL draft along with 3/5ths of his offensive line, however he made the decision to come back to Ohio State for his senior year.

With ALL focus on ND. I have decided to return for my last year & help this team achieve our goals. Thanks for the support #BuckeyeNation

With his return in the books, Coach Urban Meyer made Pat a captain for the 2016 season. He was one of three returning starters on the offensive side of the ball including Billy Price and J.T. Barrett. He has moved from his normal right guard spot on the offensive line to center where he will take over for Jacoby Boren and anchor the Buckeye offense. Having him there to call out coverages and help teach a starting offensive line with three new starters will be a huge asset for the 2016 Buckeyes.

Elflein graduated from Ohio State with a degree in communications in May of 2016. He has been awarded the “Iron Buckeye” award as a person who has unquestioned physical training dedication, determination, discipline, toughness and leadership. He will leave Ohio State as a possible four time OSU Scholar-Athlete award winner and a four time varsity letter winner. He has the chance as well to leave with this senior class as the all-time winning est player in Ohio State history, beating out the class that just left’s 50 wins.

The Buckeyes have had many high level recruits come to campus over the years, but the rise of Pat Elflein from relative unknown to a key cog in the offense for Ohio State has been a great story to watch unfold. For a kid who barely cracked the top 1000 players in the 2011 recruiting class to a potential first round draft pick is something to behold. It is a credit to all the hard work and dedication that Pat has put into himself and the Buckeye program, as well as all the coaches and trainers that have put him in such a great position to succeed. #65 will certainly leave big shoes to fill after this season.
