Dienhart: Ohio State gets ‘pulsating and heart-stopping’ win vs. Michigan
Tom Dienhart, BTN.com Senior Writer via Big Ten Network

Ohio State’s pulsating and heart-stopping 30-27 double-overtime win vs. Michigan adds another delicious chapter to an already illustrious rivalry steeped in lore. The Buckeyes domination in a series known simply as “The Game” continues, as they are 13-2 since 2001.

But it might not be such a big deal.

There was some early rumors after Ohio State’s thrilling 30-27 2 OT win over Michigan that Wolverines star Jabrill Peppers had “sucked punched” OSU corners (and special teams) coach Kerry Coombs on his way out of a field stormed Ohio Stadium.

While that proved false, ESPN later surfaced video that showed Peppers appearing to get into an altercation with an Ohio State fan on the field.

It’s tough given the angle and the depth perception to tell the whole story, but this is our best guess:

-A (possibly inebriated) Buckeye fan bumps into Peppers while he’s leaving the game

-In an emotional state after losing his third (and possibly final) Ohio State-Michigan game, Peppers briefly grabs then shoves the fan and has some words with him

-Coombs intervenes and advises the young man to regain his cool.

Seems logical, but there seems to be a narrative going around the Peppers “punched” or “assaulted” the fan. It’s tough to tell, and much of the video going around is pretty suspect. You be the judge:

What’s your read of the video? What do you think went down?

This is perfect.

Saturday afternoon is one that nobody will ever forget. Ohio State and Michigan played a thriller in Columbus, with Curtis Samuel giving the Buckeyes a victory in double overtime, 30-27.

After the game, head coach Urban Meyer and his squad were jumping around, dancing, and celebrating a monumental victory. There’s nothing sweeter than celebrations over Michigan.

No dab this year, but this will do @OSUCoachMeyer.

Last season, Meyer dabbed after beating Michigan. This time around, Meyer and the Buckeyes were doing what they wanted.

It’s always a dang good feeling when the Buckeyes beat Michigan, but his one might be the sweetest of them all.

Go Bucks.

Milk, the drink of winners.

After a thrilling double overtime win against No. 3 Michigan, Urban Meyer entered his postgame press conference knowing he was now 5-0 against the Team Up North while being head coach for the No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes. In his postgame presser, Meyer’s phone rang; it was his wife, Shelley Meyer – and she had a request.

Urban Meyer just picked up a call from his wife during his press conference. "She said bring a gallon of milk home."

— Nicole Auerbach (@NicoleAuerbach) November 26, 2016

Milk, the delicious liquid that helps create strong bones, is one of the signature drinks of the Jim Harbaugh era at Michigan.

— Coach Harbaugh (@CoachJim4UM) September 20, 2016

As you can tell, Harbaugh drinks milk with steaks and while he’s fielding phone calls. It’s a light hearted jab at the Wolverine ball coach, but that comes with the territory when you’re involved in The Game, especially one that included Big Ten Championship hopes and College Football playoff aspirations.

Wonder what time of milk Urban is going to pick up? 2 percent? Skim? Whole?

Barrett appears to have gotten the first down, but man was it ever close.

Trailing 27-23 in double overtime, Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett kept a fourth down snap and raced to his left. Despite having what appeared to be a clear path to a first down, Michigan defender Delano Hill, hit the QB stopping him on the spot. Ohio State players and fans thought it was a first down, while Michigan’s players and coaches thought Barrett had been stopped short.

The officials on the field ruled that Barrett’s forward progress had reached the line-to-gain, and after a quick replay, the call on the field stood, much to the dismay of UM head coach Jim Harbaugh.

The next play saw Barrett hand to H-back Curtis Samuel who raced untouched into the endzone to give the Buckeyes an incredible 30-27 comeback victory, preserving their College Football Playoff hopes.

In his postgame press conference, Harbaugh expressed his displeasure with the game’s officiating, repeating the phrase, "I'm bitterly disappointed with the officiating.”

Welp.

Despite outplaying Ohio State for the nearly all of regulation, Michigan made repeated mistakes, from turnovers to dropped passes, to allow Ohio State to hang around, eventually completing the comeback in an emotionally charged, 30-27 victory in double overtime.

After the game, Jim Harbaugh wanted to make one thing clear. He was not happy about the officiating. Here’s a more complete clip:

Harbaugh furious pic.twitter.com/rEA6ycDXDq

— angelique (@chengelis) November 26, 2016

And here are a few of the highlights, which basically amount to Harbaugh being mad about...well...an awful lot of things.

Harbaugh absolutely blistering the officials. Keep saying "I'm bitterly disappointed with the officiating" over and over again.

— Kyle Rowland (@KyleRowland) November 26, 2016

and

Harbaugh cited Grant Perry being held, complained a long time about the official being more concerned with him on sideline than OSU coaches

— Mark Snyder (@Mark__Snyder) November 26, 2016

Harbaugh did get hit with a critical unsportsmanlike conduct penalty when he threw his playcalling sheet, and he wasn’t particularly happy about that either.

Harbaugh if you throw a hat, throw your script, that's a penalty? Was told it was in basketball because that ref also does basketball

— Mark Snyder (@Mark__Snyder) November 26, 2016

And finally, Harbaugh called J.T. Barrett’s 4th down conversion in double overtime, which he appeared to just *barely* get, “outrageous”.

Harbaugh: I thought there were some outrageous calls, including the one that (should have) ended the game

— Mark Snyder (@Mark__Snyder) November 26, 2016

Michigan was certainly penalized more than Ohio State was, as the Wolverines picked up seven penalties for 59 yards, while the Buckeyes were only penalized twice for six yards. But the officials also forced Ohio State to take a timeout over a ticky tack mouthguard violation for Corey Smith.

And even if one was to concede that Ohio State got the benefit of the doubt on a few key calls, the officials didn’t have Michigan fumble right before scoring a touchdown, or throw two backbreaking interceptions.

I certainly can’t imagine why officials might be inclined to pay a little bit of extra attention to potential Harbaugh histrionics though. That sword swings both ways, and if go out of your way to constantly draw attention to yourself...well...you’ll get that attention.

There are tough calls that happen in every close game. But any Michigan fan, or coach, who wanted to blame the result of this contest on the officiating, is, in our humble opinion, making a mistake.

We’ll see if the Big Ten league offices agrees.

The sheer magnitude, excitement, and dread of this game as it quickly approaches. The #2 Ohio State Buckeyes and the #3 Michigan Wolverines will have just their second Top-3 matchup in the series between the two teams. This will be another epic clash between the rivals. There is a lot riding on for both teams. Both Ohio State and Michigan need a win to stay in the College Football talks. Ohio State needs a win and a Penn State loss to represent the Big Ten East for the Conference Championship game. Michigan needs a win to be the East’s representative for that same game. This game, The Game is pretty much an elimination game. The winner of this contest will hopefully keep their playoff hopes alive. The loser, will be eliminated from the equation. This will be as intense as it can be and the entire fanbase and sports world will keep their eyes on this game.

images-3.jpg
This game started with both teams eagerly waiting to see what the other would do. Ohio State sent the defense out after they deferred and they forced a punt on their first time on the field. Ohio State, on their first possession, moved the ball quickly against the Wolverines defense. They moved well into field goal range, but the pressure was too much for Durbin as he pulled it wide left. On Michigan’s third possession, they put up the first points on the scoreboard. Three punts later, the Buckeyes pinned the Wolverines at the Michigan 6-yard line and Malik Hooker snatched his 6th interception of the season for a 16-yard pick six. The Wolverines were unfazed as they took the ball into the Buckeye red zone and punched in a touchdown at the 1-yard line, retaking the lead. As the half ended, the Buckeyes trail 10-7. The Jekyll and Hyde Offense is scaring me, hopefully, the Buckeyes can gather themselves for a battle because so far, the defense looks good, it’s just the questions of the offense that overshadow their achievements. I will keep calm and keep the faith, and the Buckeye Captains will ensure that they are ready in the second half.

imgres-6-300x162.jpg
What a bit of karma. Buckeye fans always taunt Jabrill Peppers about not having any interceptions. Guess what? He got his first, and against the Buckeyes. Granted it was on a tipped pass, but he got it. The Wolverines took it to the Buckeye 1-yard line and the Buckeyes Defense recovered a critical turnover that could’ve put this game out of reach. Davon Hamilton saved the Buckeyes, but unfortunately, Meyer gambled on the fake punt and it backfired. The block wasn’t there and Johnston was stopped short of the line to gain. On the ensuing drive, Hill scored his second touchdown of the game extending the lead to 17-7. Another couple of punts later, the Buckeyes get their third turnover of the game, gathering their third turnover to yet again, swing the momentum. A couple Michigan penalties later, the Buckeyes are deep into enemy territory, they plug it into the endzone. Mike Weber, a Detroit native, brought the Buckeyes climb back into the game on a 1-yard Running Back dive. Michigan still leads 17-14. After forcing another Wolverine punt, the Buckeyes got the ball back on their 16-yard line. J.T. Barrett will attempt to gain some momentum after the defensive stop. Let’s hope the playcalling can move the ball. The momentum was short-lived as the Slobs have allowed 5 total sacks so far with 12:03 left to play.

nick-bosa-sam-hubbard-cde7494434fa9a5f-300x233.jpg
The Rushmen Package along with this stout Ohio State Defense is keeping it close. Nick Bosa, the younger brother of Joey Bosa, made his first sack in this rivalry. Ohio State forces another timely punt and the ball is back in the hands of J.T. Barrett. After a dropped pass in the numbers to Parris Campbell, Barrett used his legs as he saw an opening in the middle and gained 41-yards to put the Buckeyes in scoring position to either take the lead or at least tie the game. The drive ended on another missed field goal by Tyler Durbin, who has missed his first two field goals, during this game. The defense needs to make another stand to preserve some time for J.T. Barrett to orchestrate another offensive drive. The theme of another forced punt has returned for more face time and Barrett comes out to get another drive going inside of their own 20-yard line. They’ve had many chances to take the lead, and if Durbin made those kicks, the Buckeyes would be enjoying a 3-point lead, but the pressure of the game has obviously gotten to him. Hopefully, he has the opportunity to redeem himself. With a couple of seconds left on the clock, Durbin got his chance, his last shot for redemption. With the Buckeyes trailing by a field goal, Durbin lines up for another attempt, and he kicks it through the uprights to tie the contest.

images-7-1.jpg
Overtime, overtime. As the overtime quarter begins, my heart is racing, my blood pressure is off the charts. I am sure the rest of Buckeye Nation is in the same boat. The Wolverines won the toss and chose to play defense to begin the extra period. To start the overtime, Samuel takes the option play inside the 1-yard line. Shortly after, J.T. Barrett scores on a QB draw. The quick strike mentality strikes again. Now, we will depend on the Silver Bullets and the Scarlet Curtain to seal the deal against our most bitter rivals. The crowd is roaring and the place is rocking. Let’s see what happens. The Wolverines respond accordingly as they tacked on a field goal. The Wolverines were on the verge of securing a win, but J.T. Barrett and Curtis Samuel came up huge for the Buckeyes. Barrett took a loss during the first two plays, then Samuel pulled off some crazy run that ended a yard short. J.T. Barrett was nearly stopped on a key 4th and 1, but his momentum brought him over the marker for a key first down. The next play, Samuel took it for 15-yards on a mini option play for the game-winning touchdown to secure a 30-27 win against their most bitter rivals. Raekwon McMillan needed to play today and he ended the game with 16 tackles. The Slobs played poorly as they allowed 8 sacks in the game. Improvements will be made and now it’s just a matter of seeing what happens at Happy Valley. Enjoy the win and hopefully, the staff gets more good news in the recruiting game. Go Bucks!!! And for what it’s worth, I was fairly close as I predicted a 24-21 score. I was a little off, but a win, especially against this team is worth the stress.

It’s ok to cry.

After No. 2 Ohio State’s thrilling 30-27 come-from-behind, double-overtime victory over No. 3 Michigan, thousands of fans from the Horseshoe’s record crown stormed the field to celebrate with the Buckeyes. Keeping with the team’s longstanding tradition, they congregated at the South Stands to sing OSU’s alma mater, “Carmen Ohio,” with The Best Damn Band in the Land; the only thing different about today, is that they were surrounded by legions of fans on the field.

We’ll understand if you need to go grab a tissue. We’ll wait.

Saturday’s attendance at the ‘Shoe was reported as 110,045, the largest in the stadium’s 96-year history. With renovations coming to lower the capacity over the next year, today’s crowd could end up being the largest in Ohio Stadium history, and given the outcome of the game, that feels appropriate.

Wow. What more can you say?

Ohio State and Michigan made history, playing the first ever edition of The Game in their storied rivalry to go to overtime -- and what an overtime it was.

After a beyond clutch fourth down catch by Amara Darboh to help force a second overtime, the Buckeye defense came up beyond huge, limiting the Wolverines to just a field goal.

With all the pressure in the world on the OSU offense, J.T. Barrett eked out a razor thin fourth down conversion to setup a play that will live in infamy on both sides of the rivalry.

HOLY CRAP OHIO STATE BEAT MICHIGAN LETS TALK ABOUT IT

Posted by Land-Grant Holy Land - For Ohio State fans on Saturday, November 26, 2016

After surviving a close road game at Michigan State, the one-loss Ohio State Buckeyes hosted the third-ranked team in the country and their arch rival Michigan. Ohio State ranked as second in the nation coming into the game and had a chance of a berth in the College Football Playoff riding on this final regular season game for the Buckeyes. Perhaps the biggest showdown between Ohio State and Michigan since 2006, when the teams were ranked first and second in the country, respectively, Saturday’s contest was just as tightly contested and lived up to the hype, stretching into the first ever overtime game between the Buckeyes and Wolverines.

Michigan would start the game off with the ball and start moving the chains pretty consistently with Wilton Speight at quarterback. Eventually, Ohio State would get the stop and the Buckeyes would take over deep in their own territory. It wouldn’t take long for Curtis Samuel to get involved rushing for a first down while J.T. Barrett would find Noah Brown for another one. After more successful plays the Buckeyes would try for a field goal but Tyler Durbin would miss on somewhat of a shank to the left, keeping the score locked at zero.

After trading possessions, the Wolverines would continue gashing through the Buckeyes defense after starting with good field possession. Speight and Jake Butt would connect for a big play on the left sideline pushing Michigan in the red zone. After a couple more plays, the Buckeyes defense would get a stop, holding the Wolverines to a field goal. Michigan would take a 3-0 lead early on in the second quarter.

Ohio State would have a quick three and out, giving the ball back to the Wolverines on their own 35-yard line. Michigan would respond with its own three and out but again pin the Buckeyes deep in their own territory. Once again the teams would trade possessions as the defenses continued to lock in on its opponent. After a Cameron Johnston punt would pin Michigan deep in their own territory, Malik Hooker would pick off Wilton Speight and house the interception for a touchdown. Ohio State then took the lead 7-3 late in the second quarter.

The Wolverines would take the pick six in stride though, as Speight and company drove down the field on the very next drive to get right on Ohio State’s goal line. With just seconds remaining in the first half, Michigan would call a timeout on third and goal before a fullback run would push through for a touchdown to give the Wolverines a 10-7 lead at halftime.

Ohio State would start with the ball in the second half and get a quick completion to Marcus Baugh for a first down. A few plays later, Barrett would throw an interception off a deflection to Jabrill Peppers and Michigan would take over. From there it was an easy drive for the Wolverines until they got to the goal line, where a mishandled handoff ended up in a fumble recovery for Ohio State. But another tough defensive stand by the Wolverines would force yet another punt for the Buckeyes. Instead, a fake punt ran by Cameron Johnston would be sniffed out and Michigan would take over with great field position.

A handful of plays later, Michigan would extend its lead over Ohio State with a short touchdown to put the Wolverines up 17-7 late in the third quarter. Perhaps a somewhat shell shocked Ohio State team would take over on its next drive. Though the Buckeyes would string together a few first downs, a punt would pin the Wolverines deep in their own territory.

Following a Jerome Baker interception, Ohio State would start with excellent field position and two plays later, Mike Weber would dive over a pile into the endzone for a touchdown. Michigan’s lead would be cut to 17-14. On Michigan’s next drive, the Buckeyes defense would hold strong and force a punt from the Wolverines. With momentum on its side, Ohio State would still have trouble moving the ball and would eventually have to send off another Cameron Johnston punt.

A Nick Bosa sack would halt Michigan’s drive and set Ohio State up with another good spot of field position. On a second down play, J.T. Barrett would keep the ball himself and run up the middle of the field for big gain to put the Buckeyes in the Wolverines’ territory. A fourth down in field goal range, Ohio State would elect to go for it. A handoff to Mike Weber would burst through the line and get a first and goal for the Buckeyes.

After three plays, Tyler Durbin would line up for a game-tying field goal that would, in dramatic fashion, go wide left from a short distance keeping the score at 17-14 in favor of Michigan. Another stop by the Ohio State defense would give the Buckeyes yet another shot at potentially winning or even tying the game. A key pass interference call would give the Buckeyes a big first down. Barrett would find a receiver to set up Mike Weber for a first down at midfield.

Barrett would find Noah Brown for a first down to set up Ohio State near the goal line and another opportunity to score. After a false start and two busted plays, Ohio State would set up for a game-tying field goal. With 22 seconds remaining, Tyler Durbin would line up for the field goal and connect on the short field goal to tie the game at 17-17 and force overtime.

Ohio State would start overtime with the ball. Curtis Samuel would take the first carry and push the Buckeyes inside the 10. J.T. Barrett would take the very next handoff right up the middle and into the endzone as the Buckeyes would take a 24-17 lead with Michigan up next on offense.

Wilton Speight and the Wolverines would show their own might with a couple of nice plays of their own. Facing the goal line on third and goal, Michigan would hand the ball off only to meet a wall of Buckeye defenders, coming down to one final play on fourth and goal. Speight would find his man deep in the endzone for a touchdown to once again tie the game at 24-24.

Michigan would start with the ball in double overtime but after three plays the Wolverines would kick a field goal to give them the lead 27-24 with Ohio State up next. The Buckeyes would take over with a J.T. Barrett run up the middle to start things off. Barrett would then take a sack on the next play setting up third down and long. A long Curtis Samuel run, fourth and short would be the result. Buckeyes would then go for it and Barrett would go for the keeper that came down to just inches over the first down marker.

With a new set of downs, Ohio State would hand to Curtis Samuel for the game winning touchdown in double overtime

Here are three things we learned from Ohio State's 30-27 overtime win.

3 things we learned:

1. Defense ruled The Game. It’s the way Woody Hayes and Bo Schembechler would have wanted it. In such an important game between arch rivals Ohio State and Michigan, it only made sense for this year’s edition of The Game to be a defensive showcase - and it didn’t disappoint on that front. Both the Buckeyes and Wolverines seemed to move the ball well early on, but eventually the two defenses would lock things down. A halftime score of 10-7 really told much of the story as well. A stark contrast from the 2006 version of the rivalry which ended in a 42-39 shootout, the 2016 version didn’t feature an Ohio State touchdown until later in the second quarter when safety Malik Hooker intercepted a Wilton Speight pass and took it all the way into the endzone.

And the Wolverines wouldn’t find the endzone until the waning seconds of the first half when Michigan pounded it with their fullback on the goal line. Other than that, a field goal only separated the two teams after one half of play.

In the second half, Michigan seemed to crush any sort of hope the Buckeyes offense had. And though Ohio State’s defense did all it could, it was only a matter of time before the Wolverines found the endzone yet again. Jerome Baker would provide a spark with another interception for the Buckeyes setting them up in excellent field position and eventually a touchdown. Ohio State found some offensive sparks later on in the fourth quarter but as a whole, it was tough sledding.

2. The offense still had trouble finding an identity. Though you can point to the poor starting field position for Ohio State, the Buckeyes simply had trouble finding any sort of rhythm against Michigan’s vaunted defense outside of the first drive of the game (which didn’t end up coming out with any points at all). Quarterback J.T. Barrett struggled to find consistency through the air, throwing for only 40 yards in the first half on 5-of-11 passing. The ground game didn’t really have much success either. Weber and Samuel had 14 and 12 yards respectively at the half on six and four carries.

It seemed that the wide receivers still had trouble separating themselves from the defensive secondary of Michigan and when Ohio State’s offensive line was being rushed at all, it put all the pressure on Barrett who misfired on plenty of open looks. Simply put, Michigan’s defensive front caused nightmares for the line all game long and it took its toll on Ohio State’s offense.

As mentioned earlier, the starting field position game for Ohio State surely played a huge role in the difficulty of sustaining drives. The first several drives for the Buckeyes started at eight, 11, 25, and 4-yard lines which against a defense like Michigan’s can be nearly impossible to move the football effectively.

Mike Weber would find the endzone in the second half after an interception from Jerome Baker but without great field position, the Buckeyes seemingly couldn’t move the ball very well at all. In overtime, with a shortened field, it didn’t matter as Curtis Samuel and Barrett came up big for a touchdown and a lead.

3. Ohio State is (likely) going to the College Football Playoff. Ohio State may have sealed its own fate on Saturday with a win against Michigan. After being ranked second in the country, it seemed like the Buckeyes were well positioned to make another trip to the College Football Playoff despite likely missing the Big Ten championship game. And with the win at home over the rival Wolverines, Urban Meyer’s team will likely make a trip to the playoff after all is said and done.

With other games yet to be played, its hard to say who Ohio State will meet should the Buckeyes make the playoff, but if things hold, Urban Meyer’s squad could face a third-ranked Clemson team which could be an extremely interesting matchup with Deshaun Watson.
