For the Buckeyes and 2017, they've been fortunate enough to have two different quarterbacks play that. First, it was Danny Clark who — though he has since committed to Kentucky — served as a de facto ambassador for Ohio State at every possible turn.

Alabama has been dominant for the entire season, but the Buckeyes might hold the key for defeating Saban’s Tide.

“Which brings us to my answer. The team I’d give the best shot of defeating this year’s Alabama team is the same one that handed the Tide their last postseason defeat--Ohio State.”

-Stewart Mandel, FOX Sports

Alabama has looked invincible for much of this season. From the absolute trouncing of then-ranked USC to open the season, to similarly sizable manhandlings of top-ten opponents Tennessee and Texas A&M, it seems that there are few teams who would prove themselves victorious against the Tide. With a 10-0 shutout of LSU Saturday, Alabama moves to 9-0 on the season with Mississippi State, Chattanooga and No. 8 Auburn left on the schedule. While Auburn has the best chance of anyone of defeating Saban’s team in the regular season, it seems unlikely that the Tigers can pull off the upset.

From a playoff perspective, Michigan would seem the obvious answer, sitting at No. 2 nationally in total defense behind Alabama and ranking ahead of the Tide in total offense. Still, Harbaugh’s pro-style offense doesn’t matchup with Saban’s defense, whose only losses in the past five seasons have come against teams running the spread and who have a mobile quarterback.

Which brings us, of course, to the Buckeyes. Urban Meyer’s 2014 squad was one which got much better as the season progressed, finally peaking in the postseason. This year’s group seems to be similar, overcoming a stumbling offense and creating a smooth attack which defeated Nebraska by 59 points Saturday. While the 2016 group is certainly not on the level of 2014’s national championship squad, they can certainly get there as more pieces fall into place on both sides of the ball as they look to the Nov. 26 matchup with Michigan. With Meyer and Saban boasting the same strengths--coaching, recruiting and a dual-threat quarterback--which could make for an interesting matchup come time for the playoff.

“We have a couple core leaders in there in Pat Elflein and Billy Price. The other guys are first time starters but they are getting better. We’re just continuing to grow there and I think it’s heading in the right direction.”

-Ohio State co-offensive coordinator Ed Warinner, via Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

Like many of the position groups coming into the season, the Ohio State Buckeyes’ offensive line was a cause for concern heading into September. Though the group boasted two returning starters where other units had none, both those starters moved positions as Pat Elflein shifted from right guard to center, and Billy Price moved from left guard to right guard. While we knew going into the season that there would be an inevitable learning curve, the unit started off the season with seemingly no break in their success. As conference play wore on, though, the offense began to stumble, with those frustrations reaching a peak when the Buckeyes faced Penn State, allowing six sacks on J.T. Barrett and a dozen negative plays.

Still, even in the last two weeks, the group has shown that they are able to gel, allowing just one sack and six negative plays against both Northwestern and Nebraska combined. In many ways, their development has mirrored the play of the 2014 offensive line, which also started the season with three new starters but which wound up being one of the best offensive lines in the nation by the time they met Wisconsin, Alabama and Oregon in the postseason. While this year’s group has a long way to go to reach that sort of peak, they certainly look to be on the right track to get there by season’s end.

With the offense putting up 590 yards against Nebraska--including 238 on the ground--dominating time of possession and recording 34 first downs to Nebraska’s nine, it would seem that the offense has once again found its rhythm, and Barrett credits the offensive line for leading that charge: “When it was a pass I was able to distribute the ball. When I was running, they were driving those guys off the ball. When the offensive line plays like that, that’s when you have games like that.”

“No one wants to see an all-Big Ten playoff...But as of Nov. 7, the conference has four worthy candidates.”

-Teddy Greenstein, The Chicago Tribune

The Big Ten as a conference received more love than it might have anticipated with the release of the season’s first College Football Playoff poll last week. With strong performances by several of the conference’s top teams over the weekend (and some critical losses by others who were highly ranked), it is plausible to start to considering the possibility of more than one Big Ten team ultimately making the College Football Playoff.

At the No. 3 spot, Michigan was the highest-ranked Big Ten team in the inaugural poll last week. Outside the top-four, Ohio State came in at the sixth spot, Wisconsin at eight, Nebraska 10 and Penn State 12. The conference further improved their case with Ohio State obliterating Nebraska with a 62-3 win, and Penn State being equally impressive against Iowa with a 41-14 win in State College. With losses by Texas A&M (No. 4) and Florida (No. 11), Penn State could reasonably move into the top-10 this week, with Ohio State and Wisconsin both likely to move up in the poll.

While this is just a reflection of the second week of rankings, if one or more of the undefeateds including Alabama, Clemson and Washington loses, there is a reasonable case for an additional Big Ten team in the playoff. For example, if Ohio State wins out and wins the Big Ten Championship game, the playoff committee could still consider a one-loss Michigan squad. A 10-2 Penn State team which could finish the season with eight-straight wins would also be an appealing candidate.

The Big Ten, SEC and ACC all had five teams ranked in the initial poll last week (the Pac-12 and Big 12 each had four, with Western Michigan and Boise State representing outside the Power-5). But the Big Ten’s teams were collectively ranked higher than any of the other conferences. The SEC had three teams ranked in the top-10, including Alabama at the top spot, Texas A&M and Auburn (No. 9), while the ACC had two in Clemson (No. 2) and Louisville (No. 7). The Pac-12’s lone representative was Washington at No. 5. The Big 12 had no one.

“It’s a little relief to know that right now I saw some explosiveness that we’ve kind of been lacking in some positions. And I think relief is probably the correct word. We’ve all been waiting for that to happen. No better time than the month of November to get that thing going.”

-Urban Meyer, via Paul Myerberg, USA TODAY Sports

Ohio State’s offense is not dead. Led by J.T. Barrett, they proved as much Saturday against Nebraska, scoring two touchdowns on the ground and four through the air. And the defense, which had been criticized, though not as widely so, added two pick-sixes to the total. Urban Meyer even smiled at the result.

While Nebraska has made significant improvements under Mike Riley, they have a long way to go until they beat the likes of Ohio State in the Big Ten, especially when Ohio State is finally able to get back on track and capitalize on the frustration of recent weeks, culminating in the team’s only loss and being left out of the top-four of the inaugural College Football Playoff rankings. In many ways, the win was akin to the Buckeyes’ 59-0 beatdown of Wisconsin during the 2014 Big Ten Championship game, when Ohio State was again on the outside of the playoff bubble looking in, and when they needed a dominant performance on a national scale against a formidable conference opponent.

This leap had been a long time coming this season. With struggles and miscues plaguing the team essentially since their shutout against Rutgers, things just didn’t seem to click on either side of the ball. But finally, according to defensive end Sam Hubbard, the team finally felt that sense of urgency and intense focus which led to the improved performance Saturday.

From a playoff perspective, Ohio State has yet another signature win under their belt to refresh the committee, if victories over Oklahoma and Wisconsin have gone stale at this point. Though Washington will likely fill the No. 4 spot formerly filled by Texas A&M, the Buckeyes have shown that they deserve to be in contention. Within Ohio State, the win has improved their sense of play, opening up an offense which had gone stale and elevating a defense that had somewhat fallen off the map.

Silver Bullets > Black Shirts ... At least this time.

Ohio State’s defense got back on track in a big way during their 62-3 annihilation of Nebraska. The Silver Bullets hadn’t been playing poorly by any means, but they had allowed 20-plus points in each of the past three games.

The Cornhuskers couldn’t move the ball on the ground or through the air. If it wasn’t for a lucky tipped reception that turned into a 26-yard gain early in the first quarter, Nebraska may have not scored at all. Overall, Ohio State held the nation’s No. 10 team to just 204 total yards — nearly half their average of 404.6 yards per game.

There were great plays made all over the field last Saturday, let’s take a look at three of the best.

Welcome to #Zone6, Damon Webb

Webb got a decent amount of action last season as the defense’s nickel back, but he struggled to find a consistent spot on the field due to Ohio State's depth at cornerback. This changed during the offseason, as Webb was converted to a safety. He won’t be mistaken for Kam Chancellor, but Webb is a more-than-competent tackler who has maintained his great coverage skills at his new position.

Webb has played well through the first nine games of the season, as his 36 tackles are good for the fifth-most on the team. Still, he was largely an afterthought in the secondary due to the excellent play of Malik Hooker, Marshon Lattimore and Gareon Conley, who have racked up interceptions on a weekly basis. This all changed after one fateful pass attempt by Cornhuskers’ quarterback Tommy Armstrong:

Ohio State shows blitz before the snap, but bails and instead rushes just three men with Jerome Baker staying close to spy Armstrong. The defense is in man coverage with Raekwon McMillan responsible for the running back. As he runs to the flat to cover his man, Armstong attempts to force a pass into a tight window that McMillan is able to make even tighter thanks to his awareness on the play. Marshon Lattimore was in excellent coverage and manages to break up the pass. From there, it was all Webb. After securing the interception, Webb calmly sprinted down the sideline with his crew of defenders-turned-blockers and proceeded to pull off a back juke that would make Lamar Jackson proud.

Webb is a true junior who was good enough at a young age to contribute as a true freshman on the 2014 national championship squad. He’s been overshadowed a bit by Ohio State’s abundance of first-round talent in the secondary, but it was great to see him make a big play on a big stage that set the state for the rest of the game.

Sam Hubbard is not an easy man to block

Ohio State has routinely created pressure with just three or four rushers this season and Hubbard is a big reason why that's been possible. Hubbard may not reach the lofty preseason-sack totals that many had him pegged for, but he’s continued to show how much of a freak athlete he is on a game-by-game basis.

Nebraska uses motion to attempt to get the Buckeyes’ defense leaning the wrong way before pitching the ball to their running back moving left. The Cornhuskers tried to block Hubbard with a tight end before sending help from a full back. After Hubbard easily sheds the tight end’s block, he’s nearly taken to the ground by a nice cut block from the Nebraska full back.

This is where Hubbard shows just how valuable he is to a defensive line. Not only does he take up two blockers on the play, but he manages to spin and keep his balance on the cut block attempt. After regaining his feet, Hubbard continues to force the ball outside where Chris Worley makes the tackle. This play won’t show up in Hubbard’s statistics, but his ability to warrant and then defeat double teams has been second to none on the defense this season. It hasn’t resulted in a lot of sacks so far, but when you see Ohio State linebackers running free into the opposition’s backfield, remember none of that would be possible if it wasn’t for the excellent play from the Buckeyes’ defensive line.

Is Malik Hooker the most electric Buckeye with the ball in his hands?

No, Curtis Samuel is. But Hooker might be a close second. Urban Meyer was asked Monday about Hooker’s ability with the ball in his hands. His response:

“Every time I watch him I want to switch him over to offense and flip it to him a few times.”

Why not? I don’t think Buckeye nation would have any issues watching more of Hooker with the ball in his hands. After Denzel Ward made one of his team-high three pass deflections on the day, Hooker came up with the ball and 48 yards of green grass ahead of him:

What followed was a beautiful interception return that featured another nice back juke and some well-timed weaves. Hooker seems to have a punt returner’s ability to let his blocks develop during interception returns and he’s now taken three of his five interceptions to the house this season (though one was called back on a chop block).

Ohio State is one of just 10 teams to allow fewer than 300 yards per game this season. They’ve accomplished this with consistent pressure, tight coverage and the ability to make game-changing plays on a weekly basis. Before last Saturday, Nebraska had been held under 20 points just once in their last 15 games. What a way for Ohio State to make that total two.

The final: 62-3, Ohio State

Defensive player of the game: Sam Hubbard (five tackles and two TFLs)

Defensive play of the game: Damon Webb pick-six.

Next Victim: Maryland. See you all next week.

It’s never a bad thing to get a commitment from one of the most prestigious hockey prep schools.

The hockey prep school that gave the world Sidney Crosby, Zach Parise and Jonathan Toews is sending a player to the Ohio State hockey team. Today, forward Caleb Rule committed to the Ohio State mens hockey team for the 2018-19 season.

Rule was born the day after Valentine’s Day, 1999 and currently leads the Shattuck-St. Mary’s boys prep team in scoring with 26 points in 21 games this season. He'll join the Buckeyes in two years when he's just 19 years old.

He blossomed last season for the Shattuck-St. Mary’s U16 team, putting up 67 points in just 53 games overall, after just 35 in 55 games the year before. Last year, his third at Shattuck was his first at a point per game at any level the school had to offer. He did score 36 points in 29 games in 2012-13 when he was just 13 years old on the Belle Tire Bantam Minor AAA team.

Hailing from Lansing Michigan, you'd have to think that Rule would have to change his feelings on OSU. But he's tweeted about pretty much nothing but Bible passages and Ohio State for a solid two months. He even retweeted Cloyd Rivers (shudders) talking up Ohio State for a veteran's memorial. Caleb also seems to endorse Noah Brown touchdown catches versus Oklahoma. Me too, Mr. Rule.

Rule will have another year to prepare before becoming a Buckeye to hopefully boost his draft stock. He wasn’t one of NHL Central Scouting’s future prospects to watch coming into this year despite the PPG+ season last year, but hopefully another year and then a solid career at OSU can boost those prospects.

Either way, Ohio State certainly looks like it has a good one coming in from a great hockey academy.

There may be a change at punt returner, though.

Urban Meyer took to the podium just days after a big win against a No. 10 Nebraska and repeated “Beat Maryland” several times throughout his time with the media. In addition to the football updates, Meyer was asked about the election causing issue in the locker room, but the head coach noted he has a mature locker room and just hopes the guys get out and vote.

  • Playcalling seemed to be improved against Nebraska. Meyer noted that he is getting opinions from a bigger group than he has in the past, but he wants plays that his staff loves not just likes.
  • The receivers stepped up big this week, with Meyer saying the young players “blocked well on the screen passes” and “was their best game by far.” The development of the young guys “plateaued” after the first few games, but has seemingly been jump started after the Penn State loss.
  • K.J. Hill, specifically, has earned more playing time throughout the season, with Meyer touting the receiver as “a very reliable guy, good blocker, always in the right place, very good hands”.
  • On punt returners moving forward, Meyer said Curtis Samuel is in there now, and K.J. Hill and Parris Campbell might work in. They are still evaluating Dontre Wilson at the position.
  • Meyer was asked about Malik Hooker’s ability with the ball in his hands. He quipped, “every time I watch him I want to switch him over to offense and flip it to him a few times”. He continued that the intensity that results from interceptions is incredible
  • “This was the best it could have been,” Meyer boasted in terms of a big recruiting game for the Buckeyes. The head coach has discussed his hesitancy to have so many recruits at such a high-stakes game, but this time it worked out.
  • Meyer was asked when there is a big injury, like Tommy Armstrong, how he handles the dip in energy and how he responds. The head coach said the most important thing is that the young player is okay, and the second thing is to keep his players moving on the sideline.

Giving the ball to one of your best players worked out pretty well.

Stop me if you’ve heard this story before, but after weeks of struggling offensive production, especially in the passing game, Ohio State fans begged the team to find ways to give Curtis Samuel the ball.

Well, they listened. And things worked out pretty okay for the Buckeyes. And now, the Big Ten has noticed.

After absolutely thrashing a top ten Nebraska squad 62-3 on Saturday, the Big Ten named Ohio State’s Curtis Samuel the co-offensive player of the week, sharing the award with Michigan quarterback Wilton Speight.

Samuel torched Nebraska in a variety of different ways. He helped jump start Ohio State’s struggling deep passing attack with a 75 yard touchdown catch. He fought for tough yards through contact. And when the dust settled, he finished with 178 total yards (41 on the ground over five carries, and 137 through the air on eight catches), and two touchdowns.

As a team, Ohio State finished with 590 total yards.

When Samuel is stretching defenses like this, Ohio State’s offense is nearly impossible to shut down. This was Samuel’s first weekly Big Ten honor, but if he’s able to sustain even a fraction of this level of production, it won’t be his last.

The first sane line since ... the last one?

Fresh on the heels of Ohio State laying the wood to Nebraska, 62-3, and Michigan doing similar to Maryland, Urban Meyer’s Buckeyes prepare to head to the area surrounding our nation’s capital looking to keep the momentum going.

While first-year head coach D.J. Durkin’s Terps doesn’t present the same level of challenge as the Cornhuskers, in order to stay the course and set up a proper potential Big Ten East division championship game against the Wolverines Thanksgiving weekend, the Bucks will need to keep their foot on the pedal.

With sportsbooks taking action for nearly a day now, the Ohio State-Maryland betting lines have settled around 27.5 after opening at 28. A week ago we guffawed at the Bucks being three score favorites against NU after struggling on and off for the past month. Turned out that line was low.

This week’s spread feels far more in line with reality. The Bucks will be hard pressed to match Michigan’s 59-3 lambasting of the former Meyer/Jim Harbaugh assistant coach’s first team of his own, but a comfortable win for the second time in three years in the D.C. area feels more in line with reality -- or at least expectations.

What say you? Will OSU cruise to another decisive victory? Or can Maryland tap into the formula Northwestern nearly used to upend the Bucks in Ohio Stadium two weeks ago?

Two Buckeyes even scored twice on Sunday.

Now in the back stretch of the season, Week 9 in the NFL was good for former Buckeyes. The rookies, both offense and defense, have proven why Ohio State won the 2014 National Championship, and why they had so many players drafted in 2016. A few players finally returned from injuries, while others stayed sidelined.

Touchdowns for everyone!

Former Ohio State players showed off this week, with four guys scoring touchdowns — and some more than one. The 2016 class of NFL rookies has done a great job of making announcers talk about how good Buckeyes are on a consistent basis. By season’s end, there is a good chance that at least one, if not more, walk away with new rookie records and awards.

Ezekiel Elliott (Cowboys) continued his impressive rookie season in Week 9, with a 92 yard day against the Browns, and two touchdowns. This is his second week in a row just shy of over 100 rushing yards. Elliott has now rushed for 891 yards and seven touchdowns this season, making him the third back — joining Eric Dickerson and Adrian Peterson — in NFL history to rush for at least 875 yards and seven touchdowns in just eight career games.

Jalin Marshall (Jets) recorded his first NFL career touchdown in Week 9 against the Dolphins. He could see an increase in snaps and targets if he keeps showing this kind of ability, not only on special teams, but on offense too. He finished the day with three receptions for 59 yards and a touchdown.

Terrelle Pryor (Browns) was the only player from Cleveland to make it into the endzone Sunday, where the team continued their win-less streak this season. Pryor was at least able to snag five catches for 47 yards and score.

Corey Linsley off PUP

The Green Bay Packers activate the center just days ahead of their matchup with the Indianapolis Colts. After tearing his hamstring twice this offseason, Linsley was placed on the physically unable to perform list for the first have of the season. The timing of his return couldn’t better for the Packers, who just lost their backup, J.C. Tretter, to a knee injury.

Steelers defense reloaded

Both Cam Heyward and Ryan Shazier are back after missing several games due to injury, but thanks to last week’s bye, were able to make their return to face division rival Baltimore. The two former Silver Bullets are two of the few bright spots currently on a banged up Steelers team.

Plays of the week

Johnathan Hankins

Defenders need love too; especially when they can stuff an offense in the redzone like the Buckeye did for the Giants against division rival Philadelphia. Hankins has been a big factor for the Giants this year, and has stepped up in clutch moments through the season, recording several sacks and key stuffs like this:

Bosa Shrug

Joey Bosa may not have recorded a sack on Sunday, but when teammate Brandon Flowers completed a Pick-6, he gave a nod to the Buckeye and his signature celebration:
