It’s on.

As advertised Friday evening on the ESPN family of networks and confirmed by College GameDay host Rece Davis Saturday morning during a snowy show in East Lansing, Kirk, Coach, and the crew will be headed to Columbus for what could be the biggest game of the year.

Starting at 7 a.m. ET Saturday morning, the GameDay crew will broadcast from on campus breaking down and covering all the angles of Jim Harbaugh’s first matchup against Ohio State since losing at home in his The Game debut, 42-13. The specific location has yet to be confirmed.

Even with the two teams trending in seemingly different directions, next Saturday could present as hard-fought and contested of a matchup as we’ve seen in the rivalry since 2013’s near Michigan upset scare. Jim Harbaugh’s never coached in Ohio Stadium as his alma mater’s head coach. With OSU still showing some vulnerabilities in the offensive line, an excellent Michigan defense will look to keep new quarterback John O’Korn and the offense in a position to come out with a win.

That 2017 class just got one step closer to being even more stacked.

The Ohio State Buckeyes already had one of the highest rated recruiting classes for 2017. Now, the Bucks are a tad bit closer to raising their .9550 recruiting score as five-star outside linebacker Baron Browning (Kennedale, TX / Kennedale) listed OSU as one of his final six schools fighting for his recruitment.

Making it known on Twitter, Browning put a graphic of the schools that still had a shot at signing the No. 2 OLB in the 2017 class.

Final 6.... pic.twitter.com/4mSb2An1Ma

— Baron Browning (@baronbrwnng) November 18, 2016

Ohio State will be battling UCLA, Alabama, Florida State, UCLA, Michigan and home state program TCU for the No. 9 overall player in the country. We’ll find out where Browning will choose to go to school in just 10 days, as he is listed as being on ‘commitment watch’ by 247sports.

November is becoming a big month for the Texan, as Texas HS Football named Browning the defensive player of the month earlier in the week.

Rutger gets Ohio State offer

No, Rutgers university isn’t being bought out by Ohio State – nor is Rutgers on official visit this week to Michigan. Rutger Reitmaier (Nashville, TN /Lipscomb Academy), however, has earned an offer to play at Ohio State.

The defensive tackle in the 2017 class is graded as a three-star prospect, and is ranked as the No. 23 DT in the nation. Currently, Reitmaier holds 20 offers, and the 247sports crystal ball prediction is split on whether the Nashville, Tenn. native will be going across the country to play for the defensive mind of Brady Hoke at Oregon, or playing his college football a lot closer nearby at SEC staple Tennessee.

While Ohio State isn’t in the front of the pack for Reitmaier, it does create another option. College football recruiting is a weird practice – so anything can happen. It would be cool though to have someone named Rutger, who plays at Ohio State and would have to face Rutgers four times in his college career...

LGHL Ohio State hockey shuts out Rensselaer, 4-0

Ohio State hockey shuts out Rensselaer, 4-0

480088159.0.jpeg

Matt Tomkins recorded his first shutout of the year as the Buckeyes shut out the Engineers.

When you think of engineers and sports, you don’t get much farther than Paul Johnson and competitive League of Legends. But they apparently also play hockey and got boat raced by the Buckeyes last night at Rensselear, 4-0.

Matt Tomkins made his claim for the starting job in net for the Buckeyes, as he recorded his first shutout of the season and third of his career to help Ohio State improve to 7-1-4 on the year overall. Rensselear fell to 2-9-1 for 2016-17.

The Buckeyes put together a solid effort in the first period, outshooting the Engineers 13-8, but not really dominating as you’d think they should over an inferior opponent. OSU is ranked No. 14 and 13 in the USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls respectively, after all.

Dakota Joshua finally asserted his team’s dominance at 18:58 of the first, however, for his second of the year. He hasn’t broke out like many of us expected, at least on the goal side, but any progress is good progress, and a game winning goal certainly helps. Miguel Fidler and Drew Brevig recorded the assists.

That’d be all Ohio State would need as Tomkins would shut the door for the rest of the game. Rensselaer upped their shot total to ten each in both the second and third, but still couldn’t find a way in.

Nick Schilkey made the task even harder for the Engineers as he doubled the lead at 7:15 of the second with a powerplay goal from Matthew Weis and David Gust. It was his 11th on the year. A two goal lead apparently wasn’t good enough for the captain, though, as he’d score almost exactly twenty minutes later, at 7:57 of the third. His twelfth of the year was assisted by Mason Jobst and Tanner Laczynski.

Laczynski would add an empty net goal, his fourth of the year, unassisted, at 19:44 of the third.

Ohio State, somewhat worryingly, went into a shell after the first period lead and only generated 15 total shots in the rest of the game. Tomkins was clearly on his game so it wasn’t a huge worry for this one, but going into the future, when you play the Minnesotas and Penn States of the world you cannot do that.

Rensselaer doesn’t have the talent to make you pay when you sit back and fall into a shell, but if you’re using these games for training for the Big Ten schedule, as you probably should be as that’s the most important part of your year by far, this was a distressing sign.

If you do this against a team like Minnesota, you’ll be back tied before you know it barring Dominik Hasek finding his way in net. Tomkins has been better but, goaltender, you’re no Dom Hasek.

Either way, Ohio State did what they needed to do against Rensselaer and it’s very hard to complain about that. When you play an inferior team, you’re supposed to win by multiple goals and Ohio State did that. They should have done that against Robert Morris and likely UConn and weren’t able to for the entire weekend series, but were able to on the first leg of this one.

We’ll see if they’ll be able to get both wins over that inferior opponent as the two teams face off once again on Saturday night at 7pm in Troy, New York.

With a pair of 59-point wins in the past two weeks, the Buckeyes head to Michigan State to avenge their only loss of last season.

The Ohio State Buckeyes may be ranked No. 2 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings, but they are certainly not in the clear yet as they head to East Lansing to take on a much-depleted Michigan State team. After a tumultuous week which saw the second, third and fourth ranked teams in the country lose in quick succession, the Buckeyes earned the attention of the Playoff committee, having set themselves apart as one of the best teams in the country. And while Penn State controls the Big Ten East, Ohio State would seem to be peaking at just the right time in the eyes of the committee.

This week, then, is the perfect time to face Michigan State--the team that foiled the Buckeyes’ playoff hopes last season. The Spartans are sitting at 3-7 overall, with their only conference win over Rutgers last week. Though the odds are very much in support of Ohio State (the Buckeyes are favored by more than three touchdowns), there is no discounting the fact that Mark Dantonio’s team is the only one to beat Urban Meyer more than once during his tenure in Columbus.

On a cold, blustery and rainy day, Ohio State will need to establish an offense that struggled in similar environments earlier this season, and rely on their defense to contain Michigan State’s rushing attack. But now is the time for the Buckeyes to show up strong against a weakened but still formidable foe on the road.

When is the game and how can I watch?

Game Date/Time: Saturday, Nov. 19, 12 p.m.

Location: East Lansing, Mich.

TV: ESPN

Online: WatchESPN

Radio: 97.1 FM/1460 AM

Where is GameDay this weekend?

For the first time in the show’s history, the GameDay crew is heading to Kalamazoo, Mich. to watch No. 21 (and undefeated) Western Michigan take on Buffalo. Neither team has ever been featured on the show, and this is just the second MAC matchup in the show’s history, with the first being way back in 2003. Kalamazoo is the 77th different city to host College Gameday.

What’s the rest of the Big Ten up to today?

Most of the conference is playing at noon today, with four matchups, including the Buckeyes, kicking off early: Iowa faces Illinois on BTN, Maryland heads to No. 18 Nebraska on ESPNN and No. 7 Wisconsin takes on Purdue on ABC. The 3:30 p.m. lineup features Northwestern at Minnesota on BTN and Indiana at No. 3 Michigan on ESPN. Finally, in the conference’s only night game, No. 8 Penn State heads to Rutgers at 8 p.m. on BTN as the Scarlet Knights seek their first conference win of the season.

LGHL Ohio State’s Pat Elflein talks about brotherhood and overcoming adversity

Ohio State’s Pat Elflein talks about brotherhood and overcoming adversity

Elflein is a person we can all look up to.

"He's my rock, that's my man. If there's ever something I need, ups and downs, he calls me, I call him.”

– Pat Elflein via Austin Ward, ESPN.com

So far, Pat Elflein’s career at Ohio State has been a spectacular scene. He’s one of the offensive line juggernauts that protects J.T. Barrett and helps allow the running game to take off. Elflein has been nominated for numerous awards for his football contributions, but his biggest contributions are ones that focus on life off the gridiron: brother and spokesperson.

In a recent story by Austin Ward of ESPN.com, Ward goes in-depth with Elflein about the substance abuse battles his brother, Matt, went through – a battle that was occurring when Pat was beginning his time in Columbus, Ohio, with the Buckeyes. The brotherhood bond that was the catalyst for getting Pat to work toward his dream to become a member of the Ohio State football team was being eroded away by the constant drug abuse by Matt.

Eventually, Matt received the help he needed, however, one of Pat’s childhood friends, unfortunately, lost his battle to substance abuse. Through watching recovery and loss, Ward writes about how Pat spoke at a function that combats drug abuse and commemorating for a drug-free environment.

The article is definitely worth the read, and highlights the impact Pat Elflein has/is making in telling his story.

“The documentary, produced by BTN Originals, tells the behind-the-scenes story of the first-time Ohio State and Michigan played each other nationally ranked as No. 1 and No. 2.”

– Ryan Sullivan on the new documentary premiering on the Big Ten Network commemorating the 10th anniversary of the 2006 Ohio State-Michigan contest, BTN.com

Believe it or not, it has been 10 years since Ohio State and Michigan had their “Game of the Century”. In one of the most memorable meetings, the No. 1 ranked Buckeyes survived the gauntlet against the No. 2 Wolverines, 42-39. Behind a Heisman performance from quarterback Troy Smith, a picture perfect run from Antonio Pittman, and a late-hit by a Wolverines defenseman, the 2006 installment of The Game sparks a ton of memories.

Now, a documentary has been created by the Big Ten Network that will highlight the events surrounding the Buckeyes-Wolverines clash in The Shoe back in 2006. Premiering on Monday night at 9 p.m. ET on BTN, The Game: 2006…Remembered will feature interviews from notable members around the rivalry and TV broadcast booth.

The documentary will feature an in-depth look at the effect of Bo Schembechler’s death on The Game. Schembechler, who coached the Wolverines against Woody Hayes and his Buckeyes, died the day before the battle of the top teams took place.

Here is a short promo for the documentary:

“Of the 25 players from metro Detroit on the Michigan State roster, 13 are listed on this week’s depth chart for the Ohio State game.”

– Kevin Goheen, Landof10.com

But, before we get to the Ohio State-Michigan game, there is still one game to be played: Michigan State.

The Saturday meeting in East Lansing, Mich. features a huge contingent of players from the Detroit area – a college football recruiting hotbed.

Kevin Goheen goes into the explanation to how Detroit has been able to produce some of the best college football players in the nation. Goheen found that coaching at the high school level has a big impact on how the student athletes perform.

Cass Tech (in Detroit) has been one of the bigger influences in getting kids ready for the next level. It’s one of recruiting battlegrounds in the Big Ten, and three current Buckeyes are a product of Cass Tech – with Mike Weber being the most notable as he is already filling the shoes of former OSU superstar (and now NFL sensation) Ezekiel Elliott.

While a big impact is the way coaches coach talent in high school, the process to becoming a football star starts in middle school. Goheen was able to talk to one of the local high school coaches, Jermain Crowell, and he said that Detroit Police Athletic League is “one of the best youth organizations in the country.”

Don’t be surprised if someone who grew up in the Detroit area makes a big play on Saturday.

Ever since Coach Meyer began his coaching career at Ohio State, Coach Dantonio was always that thorn in his side. Year after year, the Spartans find a way to be uber competitive against the Buckeyes, and they have certainly played spoiler in contests against the Meyer and company. Head to head? Meyer and Dantonio are tied with two wins each. An even 2-2 record that has created a rivalry against the entire state that sits up north. This rivalry has decided the BIG 10 East representative the last couple of seasons and even if the Spartans are 3-7, don’t expect them to lie down and take a beating. For some reason, they almost always are motivated by their Head Coach, a former Ohio State Assistant Coach. He will look to once again, ruin the Buckeyes hopes and dreams as the Buckeyes travel to East Lansing to face a struggling Michigan State team on their own home turf.

imgres-5-7.jpg
This was Coach Meyer’s first taste of defeat at the hands of Michigan State in the BIG 10 Championship Game and it still hurts. This was the beginning of the rivalry as Michigan State went on to play in the Rose Bowl representing the conference at the end of the year. The Buckeyes didn’t miss out that much because they went on to face a potent Clemson offense to end the season, but caught a loss as Braxton Miller injured his shoulder during the game. Coach Meyer’s only two game losing streak. Think about that for a second. The losses to Michigan State and then Clemson was his first consecutive game loses in his now five-year tenure at Ohio State. Since then Meyer has not lost two consecutive games or two games in a season (KNOCK ON WOOD!). Coach Meyer is 59-5 over his coaching stint at Ohio State. He has a National Championship and has fielded highly competitive teams.

images-1-14.jpg
Here was another loss at the hands of Michigan State. As the Spartans knocked in a last-minute field goal to upset the Buckeyes who had championship aspirations. This time they fell to a kicker and a team filled with Ohioan outcasts that resented the fact that they were overlooked by the Scarlet and Gray when they were high school prospects. This game is fueled by pure emotion as the Buckeyes can’t sign every Ohio prospect. They are delighted to play spoiler every time these two teams play each other. This has lead to the Ohio State coaching staff fabricating a code word that aggravates the Buckeyes because they heard it constantly. “GO GREEN” constantly being said, day in and day out would become a nuisance and it would make me angry too. This game will be about getting the win. The Buckeyes are focused on Michigan State. This will be another classic, but with a variety of new players on both ends.

images-8-4.jpg
The Slobs will dictate how the game goes. They have to establish themselves against a stout, but young Spartan Defensive Line. Last year, the Slobs were getting manhandled by the Spartans and they pretty much shut down the Buckeyes Offense. That and the lack of Elliott touches was puzzling as it resulted in a close loss for the Buckeyes. The whole Offensive Line will be the focus and the key to winning the game. You have to win in the trenches and as long as I have been watching this series, whoever controls the trenches usually wins the game. This will be the best time to earn their keep as this line is much younger than the TTUN’s Defensive Line. So, if they want to continue building the confidence and momentum, they should find a way to dominate or there might be another meme coming for Coach Meyer. Buckeye target, Josh King anchors the Spartan Defensive Line along with a host of experienced Linebackers like Andrew Dowell, Riley Bullough and Chris Frey. This will be a tough task to contain them because they are good in both passing defense and they excel at rushing the passer.

imgres-7-2.jpg
Mike Weber and Curtis Samuel are a pair of playmakers that Coach Meyer needs for this game. They need to thrive and make plays to keep the potent offense afloat and dangerous as usual. Weber needs to win on the ground and on dump-off passes and Samuel needs to find a way to break a big one on the “No Fly Zone” remnants. Again, this defense is young, but their strength lies in their pass rush. They have returned more than enough of their Linebackers from last year and they will look to repeat the trend from last year. Not only do Weber and Samuel have to succeed, Zone 6 members need to find a way to separate from the Defensive Backs to make plays. They flat out need to get open. They showed some improvement against Nebraska and Maryland so I hope they show more signs of life to help the Buckeyes’ cause.

imgres-21.jpg
There will be a steady dose of J.T. Barrett during the game. He will receive a ton of reps to develop himself into a more prolific offensive weapon. He rarely has to run lately, but if he needs to, I don’t see him hesitating to extend drives and keep the offense humming. Barrett has been more dependent on his arm and with the season quickly coming to a close, he will look to improve his skills. Last week, he threw for nearly 253 yards, for 2 touchdowns and ran for 47 for another 2 scores. Balance, is the name of the game with this young Buckeye team and with youth at just about every position, I feel the need to take a huge step forward or another level, is needed to come close to their or to exceed their true potential. J.T. Barrett will have to manage the game and play a perfect game. His Offensive Line would also need to block for their Quarterback for him to succeed.

IMG_3645-300x200.jpg
Lastly, the Silver Bullets and the Scarlet Curtain need to show up for this contest. I am hoping the Defensive Line can hold up and dominate the Spartan Offensive Line. The Linebackers need to clog the run and pass lanes and just flat out wreck havoc and cause chaos. The Scarlet Curtain need to cover those short drag routes because I have a funny feeling that they will try to use some plays that Wisconsin used against the Buckeyes. They will need to play a perfect game and Michigan State’s prized recruit and former Buckeye target, Donnie Corley is becoming a rising star in the Spartan passing attack. Another Buckeye target, LJ Scott is also rising and he has become the workhorse of the running game. Tyler O’Connor is the starting Quarterback but Damion Terry is still there as well, so expect both Quarterbacks to get some playing time to confuse the defense. R.J. Shelton also returns as he looks to make plays against the opposing teams’ defense. We will see if they are up to the task as this will be another good one and another close game.

Prediction:
