The Rushmen are going to feast in 2017.

In case you didn’t know, Ohio State’s 2017 recruiting class is excellent. Like, best class in the Urban Meyer era excellent. While it remains to be seen what they do on the field, the newest group of Buckeyes are already generating a significant amount of hype, and —with another group of underclassmen heading to the NFL after the 2016 season— should get the chance to make their mark right away. (You can find write-ups and highlights of all members of the ‘Select 17’ class here.)

On this week’s Hangout in the Holyland, Matt Brown and Colton Denning talk all things Ohio State recruiting, including a highly touted defensive tackle eluding the Buckeyes once again on signing day. Despite Marvin Wilson’s decision to attend Florida State, the guys each make their case for the defensive tackle position being a strength next season, and just how good the Buckeyes will be along the defensive line. (Spoiler: A ten-man rotation is plausible, and that’s not even including five-star quarterback mauler Chase Young yet.)

Also included in this podcast are discussions about:

  • Ohio State being over the 85 scholarship limit, which position groups might see attrition to get to it, and whether they think the Buckeyes oversigned
  • This class being so good that players like J.K. Dobbins are being overlooked.
  • Matt’s important PSA that Notre Dame did, in fact, go 4-8 this season.

You can find the podcast on our iTunes page, and we strongly encourage reviews, comments, criticisms, etc. to help us deliver the best possible audio product. The more we hear from you, the better we can make it. We’re also on Soundcloud, the SB Nation podcast page, and you can subscribe via RSS on your Android and Windows Phone devices here.

Tate Martell isn’t the only quarterback in the Buckeyes class of 2017.

U.S. Army All-American and Ohio State early enrollee Tate Martell isn’t the only quarterback in the Buckeyes class of 2017. While the Bishop Gorman (NV) standout might be on scholarship it looks like another signal caller will get a chance to wear the Scarlet and Grey as a preferred walk-on.

Announcing his plans on national signing day, Kory Curtis of Island Coast High School in Cape Coral, Florida, accepted his walk-on opportunity at Ohio State after recently visiting the Columbus campus.

— Kory Curtis (@KoryCurtis12) February 1, 2017

“I talked to Erin Hodges and the recruiting coordinator Katie (Plageman). They were excited to have me and they treated me very well and made me feel like I was at home on my visit this past weekend” said the 6’4 225-pound Curtis , who chose Ohio State over options at Southeastern, Ava Maria, Hutchinson Community College, Colorado, and Florida Atlantic University.

Curtis had the chance to play closer to his home in the sunshine state, but felt in the end the blend of athletics and academics at the Ohio State University was just entirely too much to pass up on.

“I think it's the best football and academic combination school in the nation. I love the football program and the education Ohio State has to offer. The connections you would make there is better than any other school in the nation.”

While its definitely a lot easier said than done, over the last few years a number of current and former Ohio State walk-on athletes have seen game action during their career with the Buckeyes. Hoping to follow in the footsteps of players such as Nate Ebner, Craig Fada and Joe Burger, Curtis would like to keep that tradition alive and well.

“What made it right with me is that the coaches will treat every one the same no matter if you are a scholarship kid or not. They will push you to be your best everyday.” He said.

“I am ready to be able to make my mark on the best football program in the nation and try to work for a scholarship because I feel that I'm more than capable of earning one.”

Although playing time at Ohio State isn’t guaranteed, Curtis, who plans to study neuroscience while at OSU, has shown he can make plays with the ball in his hands. During his four seasons on the high school level at Island Coast, he accounted for over 5,400 total passing yards and 59 touchdowns through the air for the Gators.

OTTAWA, CANADA – JANUARY 26: Curtis Lazar #27 of the Ottawa Senators shoots the puck to the net during warmup prior to a game against the Calgary Flames at Canadian Tire Centre on January 26, 2017 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. (Photo by Francois Laplante/Freestyle Photography/Getty Images)

Just last month, Curtis Lazar was featured prominently in Frank Seravelli’s list of the ‘Top 20 players potentially available’ before the March 1st NHL Trade Deadline on TSN.ca.

His point production and struggles this season have been well-documented, but it’s not like he’s his numbers coming into this season were a sight to behold either. Since entering the league, his production relative to his ice time has been amongst the league’s worst for the forward position. (As an aside, I wrote about those struggles here.)

Lazar has pedigree and intangibles that teams love. He was a first round pick (17th overall, 2013) before captaining the Edmonton Oil Kings to a Memorial Cup championship and being named a WHL first-team All-Star for the 2013-14 season. At the 2015 World Junior Championship, he won gold and earned praise for his play in a challenging lineup spot: flanking Connor McDavid.

Even though there is a tendency to overrate players based on pedigree and intangibles, it was still a shock to see Lazar be ranked 12th in Seravelli’s rankings simply because he has failed to prove that he can play effectively in the NHL.

Fortunately, it always seems like some scout(s), general manager or head coach believes they’re clever enough to believe that they’re the ones who can get the most out of a failed prospect.

During last night’s ‘Insider Trading’ segment on TSN, Darren Dreger elaborated on the market for Lazar.

“Teams are calling Ottawa Senators general manager Pierre Dorion and they’re asking about Curtis Lazar. He’s still on his entry-level contract. The Sens are interested in listening to the offers that will and are coming in, but they don’t want to give up on this young guy just yet. He’s having a tough year in Ottawa, so the asking price – if they’re willing to make that deal – is extremely high.”

Okay, so it really serves Ottawa’s purpose to leak this kind of information to the broadcast world’s talking heads in hopes that it can drum up interest and subsequently, improve the return, on an underwhelming asset.

Ideally the Senators would be able to land futures or package him as part of a larger trade that brings in a higher calibre player, but it’s hard to believe that teams would be willing to trade anything of consequence for Lazar, especially when you figure that it doesn’t make sense for these teams to give up something of value (unless it’s a rental) for a player any team would a hard time justifying protecting in the impending expansion draft. It simply doesn’t make sense to give up assets, especially futures, for a player that you could lose for nothing in a few months.

With that said however, you can’t blame the Senators for doing whatever they can to solicit interest and drive up the price — even if the interest isn’t what we’re led to believe it is.

The Buckeyes head back out to California for St. Brown.

We’re not even 48 hours removed from the last faxed in letter of intent signed by Ohio State recruits in the 2017 class, and we’re already moving on to 2018 class and beyond. The 2017 class will go down in history, but if Urban Meyer has anything to say about it, he may just try and outdo himself in 2018.

"Pound for pound the best recruiting class in @247Sports history." -@SWiltfong247

Let's get to work.

Cali stud receiver catches OSU offer

Well, it didn’t last long, but as soon as 2017 was completed, the Buckeye football staff dished out a new offer to a top California receiver prospect. Announcing via his Twitter account, Amon-Ra St. Brown (Anaheim, CA / Mater Dei) is the latest to grab a prestigious OSU offer.

WOW! Tremendously honored to say that I have received an offer from THE OHIO STATE University ⭕#BuckEyes #P4E pic.twitter.com/RfySbU1xm1

— Amon-Ra (@amonra_stbrown) February 3, 2017

Amon-Ra, a 6-foot-1, 187-pound receiver is currently the No. 3 receiver in the country and the third best prospect overall in California for the 2018 class. With 20 offers so far from the likes of Alabama, Ole Miss, Notre Dame and USC, it’s easy to see why the Buckeyes wanted to get into the mix for this Cali product.

The 247sports crystal ball has the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame running away with this one, but with Ohio State and Urban Meyer in the mix, anything is possible. Amon-Ra only has to look at the way they’re sending receivers to the NFL in the last two drafts to see just how well Ohio State develops his position. While Notre Dame may be the leader in the early going, the Buckeyes are now a player in this game.

Smith: the real deal

With 2017 now signed, sealed and delivered, 2018 kids are now at the highest priority. Yesterday, in Meyer’s signing day press conference, he alluded to the fact that 50 percent of his classes need to be in-state Ohio recruits. With 2017 being an easy exception due to the players involved, 2018 looks to get back to the roots of Ohio State football.

One prospect that will be a major priority for the Buckeyes in 2018 is no new name to recruiting followers, as L’Christian “Blue” Smith (Dayton, OH / Wayne) makes the headlines more often than not. The Huber Heights Wayne two-sport star recently chose football as his college sport of choice, but not longer after reconsidered and put basketball back in the picture for his future plans. What remains to be seen is which one he’ll choose. It may even be both. In fact, Ohio State has offered Blue in both basketball and football—as well as other notable Big Ten programs such as Iowa.

While football may be the more popular choice, Meyer and Ohio State certainly aren’t wasting any time with the four-star receiver due to his talent, size and being from one of the top prep programs within Ohio.

Yesterday, the accolades for the 6-foot-6, 205-pound wide-out continued as he announced via his Twitter account that he received an invite to Under Armour’s All-America regional football camp that hosts the top prospects in their respective region. Sure to put on a show, Blue has been a receiver the Buckeyes have already shown ample interest in, and now that the 2018 class is the next class up, Blue will only be seeing more of the Buckeyes.

Blessed to recieve an invite to the UA All American Camp..!!! #IWILL pic.twitter.com/f924E2vmiW

— BLUE SMITH⁶ (@bluesmith_) February 2, 2017
Another Smith, another invite

When Ohio State landed their Cleveland Heights four-star receiver Jaylen Harris, they knew of another Heights football player that was seriously interested in the Buckeyes. Harris’ teammate, Tyreke Smith, isn't a fairly new name to Buckeye fans either as he was a recent recipient of an Ohio State offer.

The four-star defensive end was told by the Buckeyes football staff to be patient and that eventually with camping at Ohio State and continued development, he would be a Buckeye. Fast forward after rival Michigan offered Smith, and the Buckeyes followed suit in hopes to keep the best Ohio talent in state at the next level.

Currently, Smith checks in as a 6-foot-3, 260-pound four-star DE and grades out as the sixth best at his position and the seventh best prospect overall in the 2018 Ohio recruiting class, according to 247sports. With over twenty scholarship offers from the likes of Penn State, Michigan, Notre Dame and Texas, Ohio State certainly wants to keep this recruitment closer than others.

Yesterday, Tyreke was another Ohio prospect in the 2018 class to receive the Under Armour All-America regional camp invite as one of Ohio’s best. Smith has said he has no set decision in mind and that he’d like to take all five of his official visits before making his college plans final. However, the crystal ball (and most) would like to believe that come signing day 2018, Smith will be the next Cleveland native to head down I-70 and suit up for the home state Buckeyes. Time will tell, but for an in-state prospect, it’s never too early to wonder.

Excited to receive an invite to The Under Armour All American Regional camp. @UAFootball #AllAmerica #IWILL pic.twitter.com/TrrLQTP1rt

Thankfully then running backs coach Stan Drayton was able to talk some sense into Urban Meyer.

“We were debating on just whether to take him. It came down to the 11th hour with Missouri. We were like, ‘Maybe we should just let him go’ because we had another running back in that class.”

Former Ohio State offensive coordinator Tom Herman via Brad Townsend, Dallas Morning News

Who knows just where Ohio State and Urban Meyer might be had the Buckeyes decided to give up their pursuit of Ezekiel Elliott in 2013. With the way Elliott performed in the first College Football Playoff, it’s easy to think the Buckeyes wouldn’t have won the national title without the running back from Missouri. Now Elliott will like be named NFL Rookie of the Year on Saturday night after being taken fourth overall in the 2016 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys.

Had it not been for former Ohio State running backs coach Stan Drayton, Elliott might have would up at Missouri, which was where both of Ezekiel’s parents went to college. Meyer was hesitant to give his approval to the recruitment of Elliott, particularly because Meyer didn’t think Ohio State should be recruiting against Missouri. Despite already having Dontre Wilson in the fold, Drayton was able to sway Meyer into adding Elliott to the 2013 class, and the rest is history. In the end, the decision to stick with Elliott worked out for all parties involved. Not only did Ohio State win a national title, but Elliott is one of the bright young stars in the NFL. While Meyer is working on getting the Buckeyes their next title, Herman and Drayton have reunited about 200 miles away from Elliott, as they try and bring Texas back to prominence.

“I have no issue competing with whoever. I mean, to make it in the NFL, you have to compete against the best anyway. This is not where I want to stop. I want to play in the NFL, so this isn’t going to be the last time I have to compete against the best guy out there.”

Ohio State quarterback Tate Martell via Austin Ward, ESPN

Even though Tate Martell has been at Ohio State for just a few weeks, he already has big plans for his time in Columbus. While nobody is expecting Martell to unseat J.T. Barrett for the starting quarterback job in the fall, there is a bit of a logjam behind Barrett. Martell, Joe Burrow, and Dwayne Haskins will all be trying to make a name for themselves this year on the quarterback depth chart, as the trio looks to position themselves as the front-runner for Barrett’s job heading into the 2018 season.

While Martell will likely redshirt this fall, but that doesn’t mean his presence can’t light a fire under Barrett, Burrow, and Haskins. With the time he spent on the field in blowouts, Burrow looked impressive and seems like the favorite to backup Barrett. Haskins made a name for himself with the way he ran the scout team in his first year in Columbus, particularly in Fiesta Bowl as he helped the Ohio State defense prepare for Clemson’s Deshaun Watson. Even though it’s likely Martell will have to wait a year to get a chance to see the field for the Buckeyes, he’ll be able to soak up everything he can this year as he prepares to make a name for himself in the future with Ohio State.

“I just try to build off of each year and each game and each experience out there on the field and take everything I did in the offseason, whether it’s rugby or fitness, and try to implement that into my game, and I’m lucky enough that I’ve been able to make the plays that have come to me, but a lot needs to be said about the guys around me that allow me to do that.”

Former Ohio State defensive back Nate Ebner via Sam Gardner, FOX Sports

No matter how the Super Bowl plays out on Sunday night, Nate Ebner has already had quite a whirlwind past 12 months. The former Ohio State defensive back has to be ready for a bit of a break after competing in the Summer Olympics in Rio for the U.S. rugby sevens team, and following that up by joining the Patriots immediately after. Even though Ebner has to be running on fumes by now, it is an experience he wouldn’t change at all. After the United States finished ninth in Rio, Ebner had already missed New England’s first preseason game. Many thought Ebner might have some catching up to do, but that wasn’t the case, as he was named second-team special teams All-Pro, finishing just behind teammate Matthew Slater.

Should New England beat Atlanta on Sunday night, it will be Ebner’s second Super Bowl title with New England. It is still unknown if Ebner will be able to play against the Falcons in Houston after he suffered his second concussion of the season in the AFC Championship Game. While Ebner wasn’t able to join wide receiver Bob Hayes and defensive tackle Michael Carter as players to both medal in the Olympics and win a Super Bowl in their careers, nobody can take away just how impressive his play has been not only on the rugby pitch, but also on the football field over the past year.
