The Buckeyes finished the season’s opening weekend with a .500 record.

The Ohio State baseball team will return to Columbus from the Sunshine State Classic in Osceola, Florida with a .500 record after dropping Sunday’s game to Kansas State, 3-2. The Buckeyes lost their final two games of the weekend tournament.

Right-hander Jake Post, making his first appearance since 2015 after sitting out last season with Tommy John surgery, had a solid outing for Ohio State. In six innings of work, the redshirt senior gave up two runs on five hits, striking out three and not issuing a walk in taking a no-decision.

Seniors Jalen Washington and Zach Ratcliff each had a pair of hits in the losing effort, as the Buckeyes failed to come up with the clutch hitting they needed late in the game, stranding a total of eight runners in the ballgame.

Kansas State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning thanks to two hits and a hit batter with two outs. Josh Rolette’s single to right plated Steve Serratore for the early lead. Post settled in after that in his return to the mound, setting down 10 of the next 11 batters he faced.

There was trouble in the fifth, though, as the Wildcats scored another run. A leadoff bunt single by Will Brennan and a sacrifice bunt by Josh Ethier put a runner in scoring position, and an infield single by Cameron Thompson brought Brennan all the way around.

But the Buckeyes were able to answer in the bottom half of the frame. With one out, Shea Murray sent a long fly ball down the right field line. It stayed in the park, but he ended up on third base with a triple. After Jacob Barnwell worked a walk, Tre Gantt ripped a single into right-center to bring Murray home.

Washington followed that up with a double into the gap in left-center, which brought Barnwell around to tie the game and gave Ohio State two runners in scoring position with just one out. It also ended the day for starter Parker Rigler.

Side-armer Nick Jones relieved and got Noah McGowan to send a grounder to third. Gantt was hung up in a rundown and tagged out, and Tyler Cowles grounded out to shortstop to end the threat.

Freshman Jake Vance made his collegiate debut in relief of Post in the seventh, and the righty from Canton Central Catholic worked around a leadoff infield single to keep the game knotted up. He wouldn’t be able to escape in the eighth, though.

Jake Wodtke led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Serratore. Jake Scudder then singled to center, bringing Wodtke home and giving the Wildcats a 3-2 lead. Vance would take the loss in the game.

KState got two shutout innings of relief from sophomore right-hander Mitch Zubradt, picking up the win, and senior lefty Jordan Floyd worked through a jam in the eighth and a 1-2-3 ninth to earn the save.

Up next for the baseball Bucks is a trip to the desert for the Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge in Surprise, Arizona. Ohio State will play two games apiece against Utah and Oregon State in a stern early season test Thursday through Sunday.

The Buckeyes remain undefeated with a narrow win in Columbus.

The 20th-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes men’s lacrosse team built on its early season success with a narrow, 8-7 win over the Massachusetts Minutemen Saturday in Columbus. Ohio State now moves to 3-0 on the season. It was the Buckeyes’ first game at Ohio Stadium this season, having played its previous two matchups in the Woody Hayes Athletic Complex.

Senior specialist Jake Withers won the opening faceoff for Ohio State, and the Buckeyes quickly got two shots off before senior attackman Austin Shanks found the back of the net less than two minutes into the opening quarter. UMass answered quickly, when, after another two shots by Ohio State, the Minutemen successfully cleared and scored with 11:53 remaining in the first. Junior attackman Colin Chell put Ohio State back up two minutes later, but a penalty on the Buckeyes gave UMass a man-up opportunity which they capitalized on with a goal, tying things at two-all midway through the quarter. Senior midfielder Johnny Pearson responded with his first goal of the game, assisted by freshman midfielder Tre Leclaire, to give Ohio State the lead once again. However, the Minutemen tied the score at three-all, finding the back of the net with 10 seconds left in the first.

The two teams traded possessions for most of the second quarter, until UMass scored with 6:38 remaining in the half to gain their first lead of the game. Despite four shots on a single possession to end the half, the Buckeyes were shutout in an entire quarter of play for the first time this season.

Ohio State tied things back up early in the second half on a Leclaire goal, assisted by senior attackman Eric Fannell. But then the Minutemen scored two goals in less than a minute to take a 6-4 lead with 9:13 remaining in the third quarter. Undeterred, Pearson scored his second goal of the game to pull within one midway through the third, and Chell added a second goal of his own to bring the score to 6-6 with 2:35 remaining in the quarter.

With the game tied entering the final quarter, UMass scored to go up 7-6 with 11:46 remaining in the game. But senior midfielder J.T. Blubaugh, who was quiet last game against Detroit Mercy, scored his first goal of the game to give Ohio State the tie. Freshman defenseman Jeff Henrick, assisted by Withers, then capped off scoring for both teams 13 seconds later to give the Buckeyes an 8-7 edge that they would not relinquish with 10:39 left in the game.

Chell and Pearson led the Buckeyes in scoring with two goals each on the day. UMass outshot Ohio State 19-18, but Buckeye goalies recorded 12 saves to UMass’s 10. Senior goalie Tom Carey played just 15 minutes, with junior goalie Matthew Smidt coming in for the final three quarters and saving 11 shots on goal. Withers got back on track for faceoffs, winning 12-of-19 on the day while going solo (he had previously split time with freshman specialist Christian Feliziani). Ohio State had a 27-19 advantage in ground balls over UMass, with Withers recording a team-high 10.

UMass falls to 0-2 on the season and heads to Cambridge to play Harvard next week. Next up for the Buckeyes are the Dolphins of Jacksonville in Columbus--their final matchup in their four-game homestand before heading to Milwaukee to face Marquette.

The Buckeyes completed the weekend sweep with the 4-3 victory over the Spartans on Saturday night

Ohio State showing dominance against inferior teams is not something we’ve seen lately as much as we should. But, boy, did it show up in the second period on Saturday night.

No. 14 Ohio State hockey went up 1-0 after twenty minutes, but obliterated Michigan State in the second, outshooting MSU 14-4 in the frame and retaining their lead. MSU had some puck luck in the second, scoring twice on their four shots, but Ohio State’s dominance allowed them to retain their lead despite that disadvantage.

The first and third periods weren’t nearly as impressive, but Ohio State found a way to scrape by and maintain their lead throughout, never trailing or even spending a second tied after scoring their first goal.

The first period wasn’t so nice in the shot total department, with OSU trailing 6-9. But Matt Miller, who had two assists on Friday night, scored at 12:17. His second in three games, on the powerplay, was assisted by Matt Joyaux and Weis.

That’d be all that would appear on the scoreboard in the first, but the second would look like a 1980s Oilers game in comparison. Nick Schilkey scored his 23rd of the year just 1:18 into the second, taking a feed in the offensive zone and firing a sharp angle shot low in the zone to make it 2-0. David Gust got the primary assist for the feed and Gordi Myer had the secondary helper. His 23rd is the most for a Buckeye since 2005.

Brendon Kearney would make it 3-0 in favor of OSU just 27 seconds later, at 1:45 and this one sure looked like it was going to be a laugher. If I told you Michigan State would only register four shots in the second despite being down 3-0, you’d think they got their doors blown off. They did, but still found a way to score. Twice.

Logan Lambdin scored quickly after Kearney, at 2:36 and Mason Appleton made it a one goal game at 13:16, just over ten minutes later. Suddenly, Ohio State looked like they were in deep trouble, but they didn’t stop attacking and give MSU any more chances than they earned.

Michigan State wouldn’t score again in that period and OSU took that 3-2 lead into the intermission. Ohio State would go back to their defensive shell in the third, only registering four shots of their own, but they only allowed six in net and would find a way to hold on.

Weis would provide an ultimately-much needed insurance goal, as he took a feed from John Wiitala after Wiitala won an offensive zone faceoff and put it home. Ohio State was back up two goals, 4-2.

Michigan State wasn’t done, however. The Spartans looked like they got within one with 6:02 left in the third, but Ohio State challenged, thinking that MSU came into the zone offside. The goal, unfortunately for the Buckeyes, was upheld and the lead was down to just one.

But that was all that the Spartans would get. Michigan State would get three shots within the last four plus minutes, but weren’t able to find a way to put one into the OSU net. The Buckeyes held on by a score of 4-3 and improved to 16-8-6 in conference and 7-6-1-1 in conference. MSU falls to 6-19-3 overall and 2-10-2 in conference after the weekend.

The Buckeyes will face the team from Michigan they’ve had substantially more problems with, the Wolverines, next weekend in Columbus and they hope to avenge the split from two weekends ago.

The baseball Bucks ran out of gas in their second game of the day in the Sunshine State.

After a miraculous comeback victory in the team’s first game of the day, Ohio State baseball’s luck ran out in game two, as the Buckeyes fell to Pittsburgh, 7-2. The scarlet and gray now stands 2-1 on the young season, with one game remaining at the Sunshine State Classic on Sunday.

The Panthers’ senior righty Josh Falk put the clamps on the Buckeyes’ bats, allowing just a run on three hits in eight innings, striking out seven and walking three.

Sophomore right-hander Ryan Feltner was on the bump, and he had his struggles with command. In 5.2 innings of work, the Walsh Jesuit product yielded four run on five hits, walking three, hitting two batters, and uncorking three wild pitches.

Matters were further complicated by five errors committed by Ohio State, including three by sophomore third baseman Brady Cherry. In three games, the Buckeyes have an astounding nine miscues.

Ohio State wasted no time getting on the board, scoring a run in the top of the first. Tre Gantt led off with a ground rule double, was bunted over to third by Jalen Washington, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Noah MCGowan. It was the last time the squad would sniff the scoreboard until the final frame of the game.

Pitt answered in the second, taking a 2-1 lead on a two-run ground rule double by Nico Popa off Feltner. The Panthers added another in the third thanks to a Manny Pazos RBI single.

The advantage was pushed out to 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth. Popa reached on a fielder’s choice, stole second, and advanced to third when Washington’s throw was awry. Jacob Wright then hit a ball hard to first for an infield hit, plating Popa.

Pitt added onto the lead once more in the bottom of the seventh against lefty Joe Stoll. Caleb Parry doubled to lead off, and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Pazos off righty Kyle Michalik, who came on in relief.

In the eighth, the Panthers got even more. Relievers Austin Woodby and Andrew Magno walked the first four batters of the inning, forcing home a run. Magno rebounded to strike out the next two batters, but another walk forced in a second run, stretching the lead to the 7-1.

Ohio State managed to put a run on the board in the ninth when Shea Murray worked a walk with the bases loaded, but it was far too little, too late.

The Buckeyes wrap up their opening weekend with Kansas State on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. ET, with redshirt senior Jake Post on the bump for Ohio State against the Wildcats’ Parker Rigler.

Despite foul trouble, Nebraska completes major comeback.

On Saturday, Ohio State (15-13, 5-10) was handed its third-straight loss, this time by Nebraska (12-14, 6-8), 58-57 at the Value City Arena. The victory was the Cornhuskers first-ever win in Columbus.

As has been the pattern for much of this season for Ohio State, the Buckeyes raced out to double-digit leads in both halves, but were never able to create enough distance with Nebraska to feel comfortable.

Junior forward Jae’Sean Tate led the effort in the first half for the home team, and junior center Trevor Thompson took the lead in the second half, but the efforts weren’t enough to cement a victory.

Points were tough to come by for both teams in the game’s first few minutes, as the early frenetic pace had a keystone cops feel to it. At the first timeout, 15:17, the teams had combined to go 3-12 from the field, yet both had committed three turnovers.

While both teams seemingly got the turnovers under control, Ohio State took the early advantage, going on a 7-0 run over a 4:29 period. After a three from the top of the key by junior guard Kam Williams, the Buckeyes took a 20-11 lead with 8:30 remaining before halftime.

The OSU lead was due, in part, to the Cornhuskers’ poor showing from the field. at the under-8:00 timeout, Nebraska was just 5-20 from the floor (1-6 behind the arc), and 0-4 from the free-throw line. For comparison, the Buckeyes were 7-16 (43.8%), including 3-8 from three, and were 3-4 from the stripe.

After the timeout, a Tate layup gave OSU its first double-digit lead at 22-11. After a rough game on Tuesday against Michigan State, Tate finished the first half with 11 points, tied with Nebraska’s senior guard Tai Webster for the half’s high.

However, as has become common for the Buckeyes this season, the team went cold from the field down in the half’s final minutes. As the Huskers went to a match-up zone, Ohio State was held without a field goal for the final 5:39 of the half, to take 30-24 lead into the locker room.

The foul troubles that plagued the Buckeyes against MSU earlier in the week weren’t a factor in the first half against the Huskers. At the break, the team combined for four, no one had been called for more than one.

The second half had a familiar feel to it as the Buckeyes raced out to a 35-24 lead, but a pair of three-pointers helped Nebraska get the lead back within two possessions at the under-16 timeout. However, right before the media break, Nebraska guard Glynn Watson Jr. picked up his fourth foul. As he headed to the bench, he was the Huskers’ second-leading scorer with eight.

From there, the game continued to ebb and flow, with OSU extending the lead back to nine, before Nebraska going on a 9-0 to tie the game at 43 with 8:45 remaining in the second half.

In the first 11:30 of second half action, OSU’s leading scorer, Tate, was held to a single point. Thompson picked up the slack turning in nine in the second half on 4-5 shooting from the field.

With just less than five minutes remaining in the game, Nebraska’s 6’7 forward Ed Morrow picked up his fifth foul on a suspect reverse layup attempt from Loving.

With a minute and a half left, Nebraska’s Jack McVeigh hit a jumper to pull the score to 54-52 in Ohio State’s favor. However, a Loving three-pointer with :30 remaining looked to ice the Buckeye victory, but it wouldn’t be that easy. Just seconds later, McVeigh hit a three of his own, and then Nebraska tied up C.J. Jackson and got the benefit of the possession arrow.

On the subsequent possession, Watson completed an “and-1” to give Nebraska their first lead since early in the game at 58-57. With 8 seconds remaining, Ohio State had an in-bounds from just inside half court. The play was drawn up to go to Loving, but Tate was never able to get the ball to him, and settled for an out-of-control, off-balance three that drew only iron.

The basketball Buckeyes will return to action on Thursday when they host the No. 11 Wisconsin Badgers. The game tips at 9:00 p.m. EST from Value City Arena, and will be broadcast on ESPN.

3 things we learned:

1. Nothing is easy for this Buckeye team. With Saturday’s loss, the Buckeyes are now 15-13 on the season, including 5-10 in the Big Ten.

However, this season, Ohio State has six one-possession outcomes (four losses, two wins), and nine two-possession outcomes (two losses, seven wins), meaning that more than half of their games have effectively come down to the final minute, with even more close late.

So, while the losses have certainly been frustrating for Buckeye fans in 2016-2017, very few games, even the wins, have been enjoyable to watch. Saturday’s game against Nebraska is another example of OSU’s insistence on playing up or down to the level of competition.

2. Ohio State controls its own destiny for a first-round, Big Ten Tournament bye. Let’s make one thing clear, the chances of Ohio State making the NCAA Tournament are minuscule, however, if they have any hope, it will have to come in the form of a Big Ten Tournament championship. And, even if they fall short of accomplishing that goal, there are many positives to a deep run in the tourney’s first appearance in Washington D.C.

A few B1G Tournament victories would be a nice way to cap a disappointing conference season, and they could help solidify a still very much in question berth to the NIT.

The bottom four teams in the conference’s standings all play in a de facto play-in round; something every team would like to avoid. With their 6-9 conference record, the Buckeyes are currently 13th, second to last in the league.

However, in OSU’s final two games, they play Penn State (currently tied for 9th) and Indiana (currently tied for the third-to-last spot). While nothing has been easy for the Buckeyes this season, the results of these two games will likely determine when Ohio State tips it off in the nation’s capital.

With the conference’s unbalanced schedule, Ohio State has not yet played with the Nittany Lions or the Hoosiers.

3. Jae’Sean Tate is a scorer, but not yet a shooter. There is no doubt that Jae’Sean Tate has been the best player for Ohio State this season. As an undersized power forward, Tate has been a matchup problem for many Big Ten teams. His energy and intensity on both sides of the court have made him the most productive player on the team by leaps and bounds.

However, despite leading the team with 14 points per game, his jumper is still lacking at times. Against Nebraska, he had multiple seemingly good looks that went lacking, but assuming that he returns to Columbus for his senior year, an off-season of shot work with assistant coach Chris Jent could make him an even more well-rounded weapon in 2017-2018.

Ohio State mounted a big comeback powered by the longball to improve to 2-0 on the season.

The Ohio State baseball team mounted a monumental comeback in the late innings on Saturday afternoon at the Sunshine State Classic, erasing a five-run deficit to defeat Delaware, 15-10. With the wild win, the Buckeyes improved to 2-0 on the young season.

Ohio State had four home runs in the game, including two grand slams, scoring 11 runs in its last two at-bats to erase a five run lead and claim the victory. Redshirt senior Zach Ratcliff had a monster day at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a pair of home runs and six runs batted in. Junior Noah McGowan hit a grand slam, as did sophomore Brady Cherry, who had a three-hit game.

The game stood at 9-4 until the top of the seventh when the Buckeyes put on their rally caps. Jacob Barnwell was hit by a pitch from Kyle Hinton and Tre Gantt worked a nine-pitch at-bat for a walk, sending Delaware to the bullpen. Jalen Washington was also hit by a pitch by Colman Vila to load the bases before McGowan laid into one and cleared the bases with his first homer in scarlet and gray.

Vila then gave up a double to Cowles and hit Coolen with a pitch, ending his day without recording an out. Ratcliff stepped in against Ron Marinaccio and came through in the clutch once again, doubling to right-center to bring Cowles and Coolen plateward and give Ohio State a 10-9 lead. Cherry followed that with a single, and Dominic Canzone sent a sacrifice fly to right to score Ratcliff and extend the lead to two.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Buckeyes padded the lead with the game’s third grand slam. Washington singled to lead things off, Cowles walked, and Ratcliff picked up his fourth hit of the day with an infield single. Cherry then kept things completely wild, homering to left, and pushing the lead out to 15-9.

Yianni Pavlopoulos, last season’s closer for Ohio State, made the first start of his career, and it would turn out to be one he’d like to forget. Delaware tagged the junior right-hander for six runs on four hits and two walks in just 2.1 innings of work, but he escaped with a no-decision thanks to his teammates’ rally.

The win went to freshman Gavin Lyon, who recorded a single out before the Buckeyes’ comeback got started. Lyon was one of three players who made their debuts on the mound in the game, along with junior college transfers Reece Calvert and Dustin Jourdan.

The Blue Hens pounded out 17 hits in the losing effort.

After needing just six pitches to set the side down in order in the bottom of the first, starter Nick Spadafino ran into trouble in the second. Tyler Cowles led off with a double, but was erased when trying to advance to third on a Bo Coolen ground ball to the shortstop. While the play appeared to hamper Ohio State’s scoring threat, Ratcliff then stepped in and took matters into his own hands, sending the ball over the wall in left field for the club’s first home run of the season.

Pavlopoulos got into his own jam in the top of the third, yielding a leadoff double Jeremy Ake, a single to Kevin Mohollen, and a walk to Kyle Baker to load the bases with one out. After issuing another free pass, to Nick Tierno, which brought Ake in to score, Jordan Glover, a preseason All-American according to Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, took Pavlopoulos deep to left. The grand slam put the Blue Hens up 5-2.

Nick Patten followed Glover with a single back up the middle, and Pavlopoulos’ day was done. Junior righty Kyle Michalik relieved, but couldn’t stop the bleeding, giving up a double to Doug Trimble and an RBI groundout to Diaz Nardo to bump the Buckeyes’ deficit to 6-2.

Glover struck again in the fourth, this time against Calvert. After giving up a pair of singles, the big righty served up a double to left-center. Mohollen scored from second, but Tierno was thrown out by the relay at home. The inning was over, but Delaware’s lead had now grown to five runs.

Not to be outdone by Glover, Ratcliff came up in the bottom half of the frame with two outs and Coolen on first after drawing a walk. The Buckeyes’ elder statesman launched his second longball of the game out to left, drawing Ohio State back to within 7-4.

Calvert couldn’t keep the Blue Hens off the board, though, yielding a single and stolen base to Trimble and a two-out RBI triple to James Meeker. Ake then followed with his third hit of the game, an RBI single to right, and the lead was back out to five. In all, Calvert allowed three runs on seven hits in his 3.2 innings.

Lyon relieved Calvert with two down in the seventh and recorded the final out. Jourdan then escaped a jam in the eighth. After back-to-back singles put runners on the corners with nobody out, the right-hander got Glover to line out to second, and Tierno was doubled off first. Patten then fouled out to end the threat.

Jourdan closed things out with two innings, allowing one run.

Ohio State has little time to enjoy the crazy victory, though, as the second of two Saturday games comes up shortly against Pittsburgh in Osceola, Florida.
