Ohio State-Bowling Green 2017 final score: Buckeyes outlast Falcons in 12 innings

Dominic Canzone’s RBI gapper in the 12th gave the Buckeyes a 7-6 victory.
In a long, fairly ugly game on Tuesday night at Bill Davis Stadium, the Ohio State baseball team saw it’s futility in midweek games come to an end with a 7-6 win in 12 innings against Bowling Green. The Buckeyes losing streak in midweek contests was halted at four.
The game was decided on a bases loaded shot to the left-center gap off the bat of Dominic Canzone in the home half of the 12th. The freshman had a 3-for-6 night at the plate, driving in three runs.
Ohio State committed five errors in the ballgame, got outhit 14-10, and left 13 men on base, but hung tough to secure the W.
Coming out on top improved the Buckeyes’ record to 19-29 on the season, 7-14 at home.
Brady Cherry had a pair of RBIs in the ballgame, and Zach Ratcliff carried over the momentum from his game-winning grand slam against Michigan on Sunday, driving in two runs of his own.
The win went to redshirt junior right-hander Kyle Michalik, who tossed a scoreless top of the 12th in relief.
The two sides traded runs early in the ballgame. Bowling Green took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-out RBI double by Randy Righter, but Ohio State came right back in the home half of the frame to tie things up when Cherry ripped a run-scoring double of his own with two away.
The Falcons reclaimed the lead in the second on a Nick Glanzman RBI triple to the gap in the left center, but starter Reece Calvert was able to limit the damage to just one run.
Ratcliff came through in the third to put the scarlet and gray back on top. Stepping to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs, the redshirt senior designated hitter delivered a single to right field that scored Tre’ Gantt and Canzone for the 3-2 lead.
But Calvert couldn’t make the lead stick, walking Glanzman in the fifth, then throwing away a pickoff attempt which allowed the runner to advance all the way to third. Derek Drewes singled back up the middle with two outs to bring him home and knot the game once again.
Righter followed that up with a double down the line in left to score Drewes, his second RBI of the night, and the second time he gave BGSU the lead.
Brad Croy relieved starter Chandler Stillings after Ratcliff’s RBI single in the third and kept the Buckeye bats in check. The right-hander retired 10 of the 11 hitters he faced, striking out four.
Another for the Falcons came off the bat of Righter in the seventh, a sacrifice fly off Woodby that scored Riley Minorik and pushed the advantage to 5-3.
Wes Rickenberg came on out of the bullpen for Bowling Green after the seventh inning stretch, and immediately gave Ohio State an opportunity, walking Andrew Fishel and Gantt to start things off. The two advanced 90 feet apiece on a wild pitch to put two runners in scoring position with nobody out.
Jalen Washington then walked to load the bases, and Rickenberg was done. Kody Brown relieved and was greeted by Canzone, who punched a single through the hole between first and second to score a pair, and Cherry, who sent a sacrifice fly to foul ground in left to plate the inning’s third run and put the Buckeyes ahead.
Woodby couldn’t hold the lead, though, allowing two runners to reach before being pulled in favor of Joe Stoll. A bunt single loaded the bases with one out, and a groundball off the bat of Jake Wilson couldn’t be turned into a double play, allowing the tying run to score.
Everything went quiet from there, with neither team able to scratch anything out on the scoreboard, despite numerous chances, until Canzone delivered in the bottom of the 12th.
The Buckeyes will see another MAC opponent on Wednesday night in Columbus, as Ball State visits for a 6:35 p.m. ET game, before hitting the road to take on Iowa this upcoming weekend.
