The Buckeyes are on BOOOMMM watch.

With the main event of the weekend being the NFL Draft, many college football programs were able to showcase just how well they are developing their players for the ultimate goal: getting drafted in the NFL. If one thing remains true in the last few Drafts, it has been the success of the Buckeye football program and their players. Fortunately, for Urban Meyer and his staff, the 2017 Draft was no different as the Buckeyes once again saw tremendous success by sending their guys to the league. With recruiting being a never ending business, Ohio State was able to use this weekend as a pitch to their top targets that when you decide to be a Buckeye, the future can unfold right before your eyes. A selling point the Ohio State staff has perfected in recent years.

Wilson ready for final decision

The Buckeyes’ 2018 recruiting class has started off with tremendous talent—a feat Urban Meyer and his staff have excelled in is landing their top targets at many positions. With 2018 looking to continue that trend, the Ohio State staff has to be loving the way their current class is shaping up.

Today, one of those targets highly coveted by the Buckeyes will be announcing his final decision on the college he will be attending to further his academics and football career. Payton Wilson, a 6-foot-4, 225-pound outside linebacker from North Carolina, is on commitment watch after announcing his final 4 schools back on April 9. Including Ohio State, Wilson also selected North Carolina, Virginia Tech and Clemson as the schools he would be deciding against. After a successful visit to Columbus, Ohio on April 1, Meyer and his staff have to feel pretty good about their chances, but three other schools also stand in the way.

Currently, according to the 247sports crystal ball predictions, the home state North Carolina Tar Heels are the runaway favorites to land Wilson, but the recruiting presence of Meyer is never something that goes ignored. Wilson is graded out as the second best outside linebacker in the country as well as the third best prospect overall in North Carolina for 2018. Easily deserving of his high four-star title, the school he selects will love his addition to their current recruiting class.

OSU targets shine in The Opening Regional

It’s no secret the premier camp in the recruiting circuit is Nike’s The Opening. While that camp has yet to take place, its regional location camps are in full swing as they look to select the top talent in each region to come together for the final camp in Eugene, Ore. at Nike’s world headquarters. With Sunday usually being an “off-day” for most high school athletes, yesterday was different as New Jersey was next on the list for the regional location camp.

Two Ohio State targets in attendance for the New Jersey regional were recent Penn State decommit Micah Parsons and New York’s Jeremy Ruckert. Both extremely high on Ohio State’s wish list, the duo participated and competed so well that each they received the highly coveted The Opening invitation for their performance.

A dream came true today! I'm going to oregon!! #blessed #GETOPEN pic.twitter.com/imecWEOMKT

— #blessed⭐️MVP™ (@Micah_parsons23) April 30, 2017

With the constant talk of Parsons and his potential to end up a Buckeye, Urban Meyer and Larry Johnson are loving the way things are trending. On the flip side, Ruckert is the top tight end target Meyer has locked in on and since the start of his recruitment. With decision for the duo coming at some point, Ohio State has to like where they are at it these two sweepstakes. If they can continue their success in 2018, these two are surely going to be in the fold.

Dreams do come true!! I'm headed to football heaven in Oregon!! #GotOpen That was for you Papa #RIP pic.twitter.com/4MCafY016j

Mitchell collects the accolades

Another one of the premier camps involving the recruiting circuit is the Rivals 5-star Challenge. Of the many participants, few will be crowned as a five-star football player for their respective recruiting class. This weekend, Ohio State linebacker target Teradja Mitchell (Virginia Beach, VA /Bishop Sullivan Catholic) earned his 5-star Rivals ranking as he once again continued to dominate each and every opportunity he has been given. Joining current Ohio State commits Emory Jones and Jaiden Woodbey, if Mitchell ends up a Buckeye, that’s three Rivals five-stars alone in the class.

#5StarBound ⭐pic.twitter.com/VeMqC2mfYe

— Teradja Mitchell ™⁷ (@WhosThatNumber7) April 30, 2017

After collecting his next of many accolades, Mitchell decided to heat things up a bit on social media when he took to Twitter to create a voting poll that let his followers and users decide where they believe he will end up playing his college football. Included in the poll: Ohio State, Florida State and LSU.

Where y'all think I'm heading ???

— Teradja Mitchell ™⁷ (@WhosThatNumber7) April 30, 2017

With just over a day left to cast votes, currently Ohio State is the runaway favorite as Mitchell’s final destination. If so, that would be another five-star for Meyer to add to the 2018 class, as Mitchell is currently ranked as the second best at his position, second best in his home state of Virginia and the 27th best player in the entire country, according to 247sports. Hopefully, the poll previews the future and Ohio State is the selection for this five-star linebacker.

Quick Hits:

  • Ohio State target, Tyreke Smith (Cleveland, Ohio / Cleveland Heights) released his top 12 schools. Along with Ohio State, making the cut for Smith were Alabama, Penn State, USC, Cincinnati, Kentucky, Michigan, Notre Dame, Georgia, Texas, UCLA and Oregon.
  • Justyn Ross, a four-star receiver listed his top 11 schools. Making the cut were Clemson, Ole Miss, LSU, USC, Miami, Florida State, Alabama, Auburn, Mississippi State, Florida and Ohio State.
  • Yesterday, five-star receiver Brennan Eagles finalized his top 10 schools. On the list are Oklahoma, Florida State, Florida, USC, Clemson, LSU, TCU, Texas, Georgia and Ohio State.

The Buckeyes fell 12-11 to the Scarlet Knights in New Jersey.

In their regular season finale, the No. 4 Ohio State Buckeyes men’s lacrosse team fell 12-11 to the 13th-ranked Rutgers Scarlet Knights in Piscataway in their second-straight overtime game. With the loss, the Buckeyes fall to 12-3 on the season, including a 3-2 mark in conference play. Rutgers, meanwhile, improves to 10-4 on the year.

Despite winning the opening faceoff, the Buckeyes ceded the first goal of the day to Rutgers 2:34 into the opening quarter. However, less than a minute later, freshman attackman Lukas Buckley tied things up for the Buckeyes. Junior attackman Colin Chell followed up with a goal of his own to give Ohio State its first lead of the day. Midway through the quarter, after Rutgers tied things up once again 2-2, Chell scored his second goal of the game on an assist by senior attackman Eric Fannell. But, while a goal by freshman midfielder Tre Leclaire, once again assisted by Fannell, put the Buckeyes up two late in the first on a man-up opportunity, two quick scores by Rutgers tied the game at four-all heading into the second quarter.

Senior midfielder J.T. Blubaugh gave the Buckeyes a one-point edge on a goal less than a minute into the second quarter, assisted by Leclaire. Fannell then found the back of the net on a backhanded goal, assisted by senior midfielder Tyler Pfister. The Scarlet Knights scored the next two consecutive goals to wipe out the Buckeyes’ lead, but sophomore attackman Jack Jasinski scored on his own rebound for his first of the game midway through the quarter. Rutgers, however, would again tie things up at 7-7 heading into the break.

The Scarlet Knights came out strong in the third, scoring the first two goals of the half to take their largest lead of the day before Leclaire ended the run on a goal of his own. Leclaire then provided the critical assist for senior midfielder Johnny Pearson on a man-up goal, tying things up at nine-all late in the third.

Rutgers again jumped out to a two-goal lead early in the fourth. Then, with 5:51 remaining in regulation, Leclaire found the back of the net to cut the Scarlet Knights’ lead. He then tied things up with his fourth goal of the day with 3:00 remaining in the quarter. And though Ohio State had a shot coming out of a timeout for the win, Rutgers managed a save, sending the game to overtime.

After winning the opening faceoff, Rutgers scored in the first overtime period for the one-point win.

Leclaire’s four goals led the team, while Chell added two of his own. In all, seven players scored for the Buckeyes.

Overall shots were 41-37 in favor of Rutgers. Senior goalie Tom Carey had 11 saves on the day, moving up the list of all-time saves at Ohio State. He now has 436 career saves, good for 10th in program history. Rutgers had nine saves on the day.

Senior midfielder Jake Withers, last week’s Big Ten specialist of the week, won 12-of-19 faceoff attempts on the afternoon. Groundballs were 26-20 in favor of the Buckeyes, with Withers and sophomore defenseman Matt Borges leading Ohio State with four apiece.

Next up, Ohio State hosts the Big Ten men’s lacrosse tournament in Columbus Thursday, with winners moving to the finals Saturday. Ohio State is the No. 2 seed, behind Maryland, the regular season champions.

The Buckeyes scored eight late runs, but couldn’t overcome a huge deficit against the Huskers, losing 11-9.

Ohio State baseball had a golden opportunity staring it right in the eyes on Sunday. After splitting two games with Nebraska the day before and looking every bit the Huskers’ equals, the Buckeyes had a chance to notch an upset series victory against one of the Big Ten’s best teams.

As has been the case so often this season, though, Ohio State found itself behind big early and didn’t quite have the offense to fight back, ultimately falling 11-9 despite a feverish late comeback attempt.

Trailing 11-1 in the bottom of the eighth, the Buckeyes scored eight runs, trimming the deficit to two. Against lefty Nate Fisher, an RBI double by Jalen Washington scored Noah West, and Brady Cherry roped a single back up the middle to bring Washington home. Two batters later, a single by Bo Coolen scored Cherry and Dominic Canzone, and prompted the Huskers to bring in their closer, Chad Luensmann.

Shea Murray greeted him with a two-run double, scoring Coolen and Jacob Barnwell, and Washington followed that with another hit, this time a two-run single, making it an 11-9 ballgame.

But the huge deficit was just too much to overcome. Luis Alvarado worked around a leadoff single by Cherry to toss a scoreless ninth and secure the save.

Ohio State now stands 5-10 in conference play, and with just nine games left on the Big Ten schedule, has seen its conference tournament hopes diminish to nearly nothing.

Cherry had a big day at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a pair of runs batted in, while Washington had a pair of hits and three RBIs of his own. Canzone also extended his hitting streak to nine games as every Buckeye starter had at least one hit.

Had the Ohio State bats gotten going earlier, or the pitching staff been able to hold Nebraska’s offense down early, it could have been a much different outcome.

Reece Calvert, who had looked much more comfortable his last two starts after massive struggles early in the season, got pounded. Nebraska scored five runs against the big right-hander in 1.2 innings. Calvert allowed three hits, walked two, and hit a pair of batters as the Huskers buried the scarlet and gray under a barrage of runs early.

Nebraska scored three runs off Calvert in the first and two more in the second. Ben Miller accounted for three of those with a two-run single and a bases loaded hit by pitch.

Seth Kinker came out of the bullpen to relieve Calvert and settled things down. The junior side-armer put up zeroes in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.

Meanwhile, the Huskers sent lefty Jake Meyers to the bump, and he cruised through the Ohio State lineup. Pulling double duty as the leadoff man, Meyers tossed seven innings of one-run ball, scattering six hits, and went 1-for-3 at the plate with a pair of runs scored.

The Buckeyes finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a Cherry triple over the center fielder’s head, scoring Tre’ Gantt and making it a 5-1 ballgame. But things would unravel in the next inning.

Joe Stoll relieved Kinker in the seventh and walked the first two batters he faced, throwing only two strikes and forcing Ohio State to go to the bullpen yet again. Kyle Michalik entered and couldn’t keep Nebraska from scoring. An error at short by Washington loaded the bases, and a hit by pitch brought a run home for the second time in the game.

Jake Schleppenbach followed that with a single to right-center that brought two more runs home and pushed the Huskers’ advantage to 8-1. Thomas Waning would relieve Michalik and yield a two-run double to Scott Schreiber.

Schleppenbach added an RBI double in the eighth against Waning, and the rout was seemingly on. The Buckeyes didn’t give up, which is a moral victory of sorts, but moral victories mean nothing in the standings.

Things only get tougher from here on out for Ohio State. Consensus national top-ten Texas Tech will visit Columbus this week for a pair of midweek games on Tuesday and Wednesday before the Buckeyes hit the road to play nationally-ranked Michigan in Ann Arbor next weekend.

The receiver looks to stay healthy and make an impact at the next level.

Former Ohio State wide-receiver Corey Smith was claimed as an undrafted free agent by the Cincinnati Bengals after being passed up in the 2017 NFL Draft. After a medical redshirt was granted to Smith for the 2015 season, he was unable to find a spot in the WR rotation last season. Despite incredible skill and a 4-star reputation when he arrived, Smith was never able to make a lasting impact for the Buckeyes.

As a junior college transfer from East Mississippi Community College, the Akron-native arrived in Columbus as the No. 3 ranked junior college receiver after pulling in 51 receptions for 733 yards as a sophomore.

At 6’1, 190 lbs., Smith ran a 4.68 40-time at Ohio State’s pro day, and showed well enough late in the evaluation process to begin to pick up interest from scouts and analysts. Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller ranked Smith as the 41st best wide-receiver in the draft, and the 261st player overall.

How good was Smith in college?

In his freshman year, Smith had 28 receptions for 438 yards and two touchdowns while playing for Grand Rapids (Mich.) Community College. However, despite the team going undefeated, the school discontinued the program after the season, which necessitated Smith’s transfer to East Mississippi.

In Mississippi, Smith was an instrumental part of his team winning the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges’ north division championship.

In the 2014 season in Columbus, Smith played in 14 games, recording 20 catches for 255 yards, including a season-long 47-yard reception in the National Championship game against Oregon.

However, with only five catches for 62 yards in four games in 2015, he suffered a leg injury against Indiana, ending his season. A wrist injury kept him off of the field for much of the 2016 campaign as well. Playing in only four games, his biggest contribution was against Clemson, where he snagged a pair of catches for 27 yards.
