The dismal season for Buckeye baseball continued.

Ohio State baseball was looking to do something on Wednesday night it had done only once all season, and not since mid-March: win three ballgames in a row. The Buckeyes were unable to put that drought to an end, though, getting drilled 14-4 by Ball State.

The scarlet and gray are now 19-30 on the season with just seven games remaining on the schedule.

Senior pitcher-turned-outfielder Shea Murray was about the only bright spot for Ohio State with by far his best performance at the plate all season, lacing a pair of triples and driving in three runs.

Freshman Jake Vance, who had put together a few solid appearances in a row on the mound, had serious command issues out of the chute for Ohio State. The right-hander walked four batters in the first two innings, and five overall in his 4.1 innings of work. Vance was touched up for five runs in taking the loss.

The bullpen didn’t fare any better, failing to keep the game within reach with nine runs surrendered over the final 4.2 innings.

All of those free passes from Vance led to an early Ball State lead. In the second inning, a single followed by three consecutive walks forced home a run, and a passed ball charged to catcher Andrew Fishel allowed a second to score.

But Vance settled down and escaped the third unscathed, giving his offense a chance to get back in the game. The Buckeye bats did just that. Noah West singled to lead things off and two batters later, Murray tripled to the right-center gap to score him. He would come home on an RBI single by Tyler Cowles to knot the game 2-2.

The tie would be short-lived, though, as the Cardinals grabbed the lead right back on a two-run home run off the bat of Caleb Stayton in the fourth. A Jeff Riedel infield single, stolen base, and wild pitch followed, and he was driven in by Trent Theisen to make it 5-2 and end Vance’s night.

Murray struck again in the home half of the frame to draw Ohio State back to within one run. Connor Pohl doubled and Fishel walked, and the Buckeye center fielder hit his second triple of the game, this time to left-center, scoring both runners.

Ball State got those runs back and more in the sixth against relievers Curtiss Irving and Joe Stoll. Stayton singled home his third RBI of the game, the third consecutive hit off Irving, who was pulled a batter later for Stoll.

Stoll inherited a two-on, one-out situation, and was unable to keep the deficit at just two. Riedel singled to plate the Cardinals’ seventh run and Seth Freed tripled in two more to make it a 9-4 game.

Stayton’s fourth run driven in came on a sacrifice fly off Connor Curlis in the seventh, giving Ball State double digit scoring and extending the lead to six. He would notch one more RBI thanks to an Andrew Magno wild pitch in the top of the ninth that scored Alex Maloney from third.

Gavin Lyon relieved Magno, and as it went for Ohio State’s hurlers on the night, he had a rough time of things. A three-run double by Freed made it a 14-4 beatdown.

After Murray’s fifth inning triple, Cardinals’ pitchers faced just two batters over the minimum as the Buckeyes’ bats went ice cold. With only four games remaining at Bill Davis Stadium, the club has a dismal 7-15 home record.

Ohio State will hit the road for the penultimate Big Ten series of the season this weekend against Iowa. At two games behind the eighth spot in the conference standings, the Buckeyes essentially have to win out the rest of the season to keep any hope of a trip to the Big Ten tournament alive.

LGHL 4 former Ohio State players are expected to be the best rookies on their new NFL teams

4 former Ohio State players are expected to be the best rookies on their new NFL teams

A new wave of Buckeyes in the NFL is coming.

“From the No. 1 overall pick to small-school third-rounders, our NFL Nation reporters predict the rookie on every team who will have the biggest impact in 2017."

- ESPN

ESPN experts believe that four Ohio State rookies will be the best first-year players on their respective NFL teams. Those four players were Marshon Lattimore of the Saints, Gareon Conley of the Raiders, Malik Hooker of the Colts, and Raekwon McMillan of the Dolphins.

McMillan is the only non defensive back on the list, and was selected in the second round of the draft. ESPN’s James Walker said of McMillan, “Considering the Dolphins' recent track record of linebacker injuries, McMillan likely will find himself getting plenty of snaps. The second-round pick is a natural middle linebacker who could move outside and eventually take Koa Misi's starting job this season.”

The most pressure might be on Hooker though, where the Colts have struggled mightily in the defensive backfield for years. “The former Buckeye will get every opportunity to be the Colts' Week 1 starter because of his ball-hawking ability,” Mike Wells wrote. “The Colts didn't return a single interception for a touchdown last season. Hooker returned three of his seven picks for scores at Ohio State in 2016.”

“A few months removed from the playoff disaster, it's a bit easier to step back and appreciate what Meyer has accomplished thus far in Columbus.”

- Matt Brown, Sports on Earth

This isn’t new to anybody, but Urban Meyer is damn good. As Brown points out, the last time we saw the Buckeyes on the field, it was an ugly 31-0 loss to Clemson. While that wasn’t ideal, everything else the Bucks have done since his arrival has been spectacular.

According to Brown, “All five of Meyer's teams have won at least 11 game and finished the season ranked in the AP top 12. All four eligible teams played in major bowl games.” It’s also worth noting that while the one team wasn’t eligible after what was left of the Jim Tressel era, the team still went 12-0.

Brown takes a deeper dive into Meyer’s standing when it comes to winning percentage, national championships, AP to p10 finishes, first-five-yeras SRS average, and SRS differece five years before and after arrival. If you didn’t truly appreciate Meyer before reading this, you certainly will afterward.

“The American Football Coaches Association has put together a change that would alter the way redshirts are counted. Could it have helped Ohio State a few years ago?”

- Ryan Ginn, Land of 10

As of now, a player who plays a single snap loses the chance to redshirt, unless they have a season-ending injury after 3 games or less. The rule change would allow for a one-time exemption, so players could redshirt up to four games.

Ginn points out a few ways this could have helped Ohio State. The first being how the Buckeyes could have used Sam Hubbard late in the 2014 campaign when needing extra help on the defensive line. Another, was using K.J. Hill in 2015, when the passing game wasn’t doing all that well.

He feels the biggest one, though, came in 2013. Michael Thomas didn’t have a good fall camp in 2013, his sophomore year. So Zach Smith and the Buckeyes decided to redshirt Thomas, despite him showing much improvement in practice. Later on that season, they could have used him against Michigan State in the Big Ten title, and against Clemson in the Orange Bowl. Of course, we all saw what Thomas became for the Buckeyes, and how he turned in a wonderful rookie season with the Saints.

“Ohio State has taken a step toward a new arena for its men’s and women’s hockey teams by requesting bids on a potential project.”

- Bill Rabinowitz, The Columbus Dispatch

Ohio State men’s hockey currently shares The Schott with the men’s and women’s basketball teams. The university, however, is considering a new facility just for hockey.

Shaun Richard, who is the associate athletic director in relation to hockey, told Rabinowitz nothing is set in stone. “We’re more just doing our homework to get some numbers and get some concrete information for if we were to take that next step and do something,” Richard said. “We are not committed to doing this at all. We have no money committed at all. We have no site picked out.”

“It’s just something we want to look at,” he told Rabinowitz. “No timelines, no nothing, but hopefully some good information coming back so we can make some good decisions in the future.” The arena would likely seat 4,000 people, and have two rinks. One for the men’s and women’s teams, and the other for intramurals and rec sports.

And what’s next for Ohio State’s offensive line.

American Ninja Warrior has taken their show to Cleveland, where elite athletes will attack the most intense obstacle course. Fans all over the midwest made their way downtown, including former Ohio State offensive lineman, and former Pittsburgh Steeler, Mike Adams. We got in touch with him to chat about Ninja Warrior, the next steps in his professional career, and some advice for Ohio State’s line. This interview has been lightly edited for clarity.

LGHL: Have you been a big Ninja Warrior fan for a while? Do you think this is something you’d like to do? Not a ton of competitors have the “former NFL lineman” body type, after all.

Adams: Yeah, I’ve watched it here and there over the years. Obviously, as an athlete, it’s a pretty interesting show, it’s pretty different from anything else that you really get to see. But yeah, this isn’t really conducive to my size quite yet. Maybe if I shed a couple more pounds.

LGHL: Are you healthy right now? Do you think you’d want to give the NFL another shot?

Adams: Yeah, I’m completely healthy right now, but i’m retired. I’m looking forward to the next chapter in life.

LGHL: What do you think that might be?

Adams: You know, I’m interested in so many different things. Like the outdoors. I’m associated with an archery/hunting group, and we have a show on CarbonTV called “the timing of two man archery”, so I’m filming a lot of hunts for that. I’m also really interested in commercial real estate development. I also talk to men’s groups, churches, and different organizations with kids with developmental disabilities. Plus, I’ve got to finish school.

LGHL: How many classes do you have left?

Adams: About five classes. Not much left.

LGHL: There are so many players from Ohio State drafted recently, and likely more to come. If you could get all of them in a room, what sort of advice would you give them about the transition to the NFL?

Adams: You know, honestly, the coaches at Ohio State do such a great job at getting those guys ready to transition, just because when you go to play there, there’s an expectation that you’re going to make it to that level, so the whole time you’re there, you’re being readied for that. The support they have at Ohio State is about as good as it gets. I’d tell them to stay the course, keep your goals in mind, always have your goals and your faith be the forefront of why you do what you do. For me, that was enough to see me through.

LGHL: Is there a guy on Ohio State’s line right now that you see and say “that guy is gonna be playing on Sundays?”

Adams: Oh man, all those guys are a bunch of great athletes, a bunch of big men who move really well. You got Billy Price, who is coming back to anchor in the middle, and the guys on the outside, Jamarco and Isaiah, obviously I love watching those guys. I think they’ve both done a really great job and I’m excited to watch them this year. And then you’ve got Michael Jordan, who I thought had a great year last year, being the first true freshman to start the whole season since Orlando Pace. That’s a big deal! I know a lot of people probably don’t want to make a big deal out of it because he’s young, but it’s a huge deal. I think this year, this group has a chance to have a lot of success.

Best of luck to Adams in whatever he decides to focus on in his future.

The Buckeyes are having some competition for the No. 4 TE in the 2018 class.

Ohio State’s 2018 class has become one of the best in the country in a short period of time. Each day, there’s more and more news of potential future Buckeyes.

Looking high and low for a TE

According 247Sports’ Bill Kurelic, Ohio State has been in constant contact with tight end Mustapha Muhammad. Muhammad, who is considered the No. 4 tight end in the country, has held the Buckeyes in high regard throughout his recruitment and has them towards the top of his list. The only factor that could prevent Muhammad from becoming a Buckeye would be the recent surge from Michigan.

The Wolverine surge seems to have the recruiting world thinking that the Missouri City, Texas native will go to Ann Arbor, Mich. to play at the next level. Of the 24 predictions casted on the 247sports Crystal Ball, all of them point to Muhammad suiting up for Harbaugh and the Wolverines.

Ohio State would like to take two tight ends in this year’s cycle, but since they lead for the nation’s No. 1 in Jeremy Ruckert, it could cause other prospects to look elsewhere. Still, Ohio State looks to be in good shape with Muhammad going forward and should be a serious contender as his recruitment continues to play out.

Can never have too many QBs

The Buckeyes sent an offer out to 2019 quarterback Grant Tisdale on Tuesday. Tisdale, a dual-threat from Texas, is rated as a four-star prospect and the number for rated player at his position. In addition to Ohio State, Tisdale holds notable offers from Mississippi State, Utah and Texas Tech. Ohio State has brought in a ton of quarterback talent the last few years in a row and that trend will continue in 2019.

Wow! Honored and Extremely excited to say I have received an offer from THE Ohio State University! #ZONE6 @air14football pic.twitter.com/LsbU8eEZMW

— Grant Tisdale (@gmtizz) May 10, 2017

With how important the quarterback position is, an elite program can not afford to skip that position in a given cycle. It’s important that the cupboard is always full with more than capable options. The Buckeyes are on Tisdale early and will look to continue that momentum into the summer where they are sure to push for a visit from the highly touted quarterback.

On the transfer trail

While the Buckeyes are on the recruiting trail for the best players out of high school, they also have to be on the lookout on the transfer trail, too. A wide receiver addition could be in the cards for OSU, as Jonathan Giles, a sophomore from Texas Tech, has made a list of 10 possible places he will transfer to.

Thankful and blessed for this opportunity! #DreamChaser pic.twitter.com/OcuJ47yNYI

— JonGiles2 (@_JonathanGiles) May 10, 2017

Ohio State made the list for the Red Raider transfer-to-be, as well as top programs in Florida State, LSU, Louisville, Georgia, Wisconsin, Tennessee and Oregon. Last season, Giles hauled in 69 receptions for over 1,100 yards and 13 touchdowns.

In high school, Giles was graded as a three-star athlete and was considered the 159th best prospect out of Texas in the 2015 recruiting cycle. Now, he’s on the verge to transferring to another top football program.

Dominic Canzone’s RBI gapper in the 12th gave the Buckeyes a 7-6 victory.

In a long, fairly ugly game on Tuesday night at Bill Davis Stadium, the Ohio State baseball team saw it’s futility in midweek games come to an end with a 7-6 win in 12 innings against Bowling Green. The Buckeyes losing streak in midweek contests was halted at four.

The game was decided on a bases loaded shot to the left-center gap off the bat of Dominic Canzone in the home half of the 12th. The freshman had a 3-for-6 night at the plate, driving in three runs.

WALK-OFF WINNER!

— Ohio State Baseball (@OhioState_BASE) May 10, 2017

Ohio State committed five errors in the ballgame, got outhit 14-10, and left 13 men on base, but hung tough to secure the W.

Coming out on top improved the Buckeyes’ record to 19-29 on the season, 7-14 at home.

Brady Cherry had a pair of RBIs in the ballgame, and Zach Ratcliff carried over the momentum from his game-winning grand slam against Michigan on Sunday, driving in two runs of his own.

The win went to redshirt junior right-hander Kyle Michalik, who tossed a scoreless top of the 12th in relief.

The two sides traded runs early in the ballgame. Bowling Green took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-out RBI double by Randy Righter, but Ohio State came right back in the home half of the frame to tie things up when Cherry ripped a run-scoring double of his own with two away.

The Falcons reclaimed the lead in the second on a Nick Glanzman RBI triple to the gap in the left center, but starter Reece Calvert was able to limit the damage to just one run.

Ratcliff came through in the third to put the scarlet and gray back on top. Stepping to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs, the redshirt senior designated hitter delivered a single to right field that scored Tre’ Gantt and Canzone for the 3-2 lead.

But Calvert couldn’t make the lead stick, walking Glanzman in the fifth, then throwing away a pickoff attempt which allowed the runner to advance all the way to third. Derek Drewes singled back up the middle with two outs to bring him home and knot the game once again.

Righter followed that up with a double down the line in left to score Drewes, his second RBI of the night, and the second time he gave BGSU the lead.

Brad Croy relieved starter Chandler Stillings after Ratcliff’s RBI single in the third and kept the Buckeye bats in check. The right-hander retired 10 of the 11 hitters he faced, striking out four.

Another for the Falcons came off the bat of Righter in the seventh, a sacrifice fly off Woodby that scored Riley Minorik and pushed the advantage to 5-3.

Wes Rickenberg came on out of the bullpen for Bowling Green after the seventh inning stretch, and immediately gave Ohio State an opportunity, walking Andrew Fishel and Gantt to start things off. The two advanced 90 feet apiece on a wild pitch to put two runners in scoring position with nobody out.

Jalen Washington then walked to load the bases, and Rickenberg was done. Kody Brown relieved and was greeted by Canzone, who punched a single through the hole between first and second to score a pair, and Cherry, who sent a sacrifice fly to foul ground in left to plate the inning’s third run and put the Buckeyes ahead.

Woodby couldn’t hold the lead, though, allowing two runners to reach before being pulled in favor of Joe Stoll. A bunt single loaded the bases with one out, and a groundball off the bat of Jake Wilson couldn’t be turned into a double play, allowing the tying run to score.

Everything went quiet from there, with neither team able to scratch anything out on the scoreboard, despite numerous chances, until Canzone delivered in the bottom of the 12th.

The Buckeyes will see another MAC opponent on Wednesday night in Columbus, as Ball State visits for a 6:35 p.m. ET game, before hitting the road to take on Iowa this upcoming weekend.

MotS&G Post Spring Game Depth Chart: Running Backs

Post Spring Game Depth Chart: Running Backs

Spring-Game-2017-300x158.jpg

The Cadillac position took a back seat in the Spring Game, but they proved their worth and made their presence felt during the course of the game. The focus for the spring was to focus on working out the kinks in the passing game. The Running Backs found ways to get involved in the game plan making timely catches and runs when leaned on.

download-7.jpg

The Starter:

Mike Weber, the returning starter from a season ago proved why he is still considered to be the starter for the Buckeyes. He runs with anger and he is looking to have another successful season in the Scarlet and Gray. He looks good early on and he has improved with his vision and patience. He is still a load to tackle and with the improvements in the passing game, he will take advantage of opposing defenses that are attempting to stop the passing attack that looks to improve.

download-1-1.jpg
Running Back #2:

Demario McCall looked like he was shot out of a cannon during the entirety of the Spring Game, which helps him lock down the #2 Running Back on the roster. He showed the ability to sit in open areas on the field to make clutch catches and the ability to turn down field in a hurry, displaying his playmaking ability. He also has the speed to outrun defender on designed running plays, which make him another asset to the team. Versatility is key and he will be used to spell a tired Weber during games this year.

download-2-1.jpg
Running Back #3:

True Freshman and early enrolee J.K. Dobbins out of little known LaGrange Texas overtook Antonio Williams for this spot on the roster. He is another bruising back that is both strong and fast, a great combination to add to the dynamic in the offensive backfield. He imposed his will on the defense during the spring and he looks to be another lesser known prospect that could potentially lead to another diamond in the rough.

images-33.jpg
Running Back #4:

Antonio Williams and the rest of the Running Backs room will be contributing in some form for the team. Whether it is for scout duty or anything, they will be there waiting for their shot. Barring any injuries or anything negative, they will contribute. Until then, it is all just a waiting game.

The NCAA passed the new rule about recruits being able to sign their letters of intent early.

“Once again, take it out of the minds of a 50-year-old and put it in the minds of a 16- or 17-year-old. I don't want to speak for Gene Smith, but I speak for our coaching staff -- we feel very strongly about strong regulation and keeping the recruiting calendar as is.”

On Monday, the NCAA passed a new rule that has been discussed about for quite some time: an early signing period for recruits. If you’ve been following Urban Meyer’s comments on the possibility of it going through, you’ll know why Ohio State’s head coach is so against it. Of course, the new ruling doesn’t just impact the Buckeyes, it will affect all of college football and future recruits. Essentially the rule states that there is now an early signing period similar to what we normally are used to during the month of February with all of the National Signing Day hype going on each season as commits send in their letters of intent to the school they had verbally committed to.

The new rule will allow a three-day period in December of each year to act as another signing day, locking in recruits that have verbally committed to put it in writing and officially become a part of that school’s signing class when it’s all said and done. The problem that coach Meyer has is that this occurs during recruits juniors seasons and for those prospects that the staff has been scouting but aren’t ready to send an offer yet, it takes away the chances of being able to land a commitment from a late bloomer who has yet to play their senior season of high school football.

So I don’t understand, whether it’s lazy, whether it’s… I don’t understand why there’s this big push. Now they want to have official visits in their junior year. There are some kids that don’t even have ACT scores. Their bodies are gaining 12 pounds. Why not move it back to their sophomore year? It’s bizarre. You’re going to see more transfers and more mistakes made in recruiting than ever if they keep pushing this thing up.

With all that being said above, it’s fair to ask why the new early signing period is such a big deal. To make it easier to visualize, take Elijah Gardiner. The three-star wide receiver was originally committed to Missouri up until days before National Signing Day. He would eventually flip to Ohio State. But if the early signing period had been in effect, then Gardiner might have ended up with the Tigers because he likely would have agreed to signing early and might have ended up somewhere where he truly didn’t feel that he belonged. This also effects in-state recruits for the Buckeyes. Late-bloomers such as Brady Taylor, DaVon Hamilton, and Robert Landers didn’t flip until very late in the process and could have all ended up at different schools.

The new rule will most certainly change some of the recruiting landscape in college football, but Meyer makes an excellent point. It won’t be all that surprising if there’s a significant uptick in the amount of college transfers after this early signing period is put into place.

“[Post-spring power rankings] 4. Ohio State”

- Brian Hamilton, Sports Illustrated

Post-spring top 25’s are popping up all over, and the latest poll comes from Sports Illustrated. Brian Hamilton has Ohio State pegged at fourth in the country, behind only Alabama, Florida State, and USC. Hamilton mentions in the post that the emergence of Parris Campbell as a replacement for Curtis Samuel at H-back shows signs of promise but one of the biggest factors is that the Buckeyes return seven starters on the defensive side of the ball. J.T. Barrett being back for a fourth season is also crucial, with Kevin Wilson appointed as the new offensive coordinator, the offense is expected to be running at high efficiency in 2017.

Ohio State has their backfield intact as well with the aforementioned Barrett and running back Mike Weber who returns off of a 1,000-yard freshman season. Other Big Ten teams to make the top 25 were Penn State (fifth), Michigan (12th), and Wisconsin (13th).
