LGHL 10 most important Ohio State Buckeyes in 2017: No. 3 Billy Price

10 most important Ohio State Buckeyes in 2017: No. 3 Billy Price

usa_today_10013449.0.jpg

We’re counting down the most important Buckeyes for the 2017 season.

When looking at the 2017 depth chart compared to the 2016 depth chart, there are noticeable holes, but the team is in a much better place now than it was entering the 2016 season after a mass exodus of NFL departures and graduation. Using key departures, spotlighting players at important positions, leadership qualities, and recognizing the depth at each position, we came up with the 10 most important players on the team. They may not be the most heralded players, or even the best players, but they will be vital to this team’s on-field success.

No. 3: Billy Price

Position: Center

2016 stats: 8 hurries allowed, 4 QB hits allowed and 3 sacks allowed on 426 pass blocking snaps (Per, CFB Film Room).

Following in the footsteps of the great Pat Elflein, who was one of the nation’s best guards before moving to center his senior year, Ohio State’s most dependable player has made the move from guard to the center position. Billy Price is the definition of an iron man, starting every game since 2014 (41 straight), needing only 10 more starts to break Luke Fickell’s school-record consecutive start streak of 49 straight games.

— Cole Cubelic (@colecubelic) June 14, 2017

With the move to center, Price will be able to use his high football IQ to make calls on the offensive line and keep everyone on the same page, which is the key to whether or not this team lives up to expectations. As we saw last season, the offensive line got worked in their two losses, and were ultimately the weak link on a very talented squad. They single-handedly lost the Penn State game, allowing 26 pressures, seven hits and six sacks on J.T. Barrett’s 51 dropbacks. Not to mention they were completely out-classed by Clemson’s dominant defensive line in the College Football Playoff.

Entering this season, the offensive line is a year more experienced — they return four-of-five starters — and they upgraded the offensive coordinator position with the addition of Kevin Wilson. Wilson is going to mitigate offensive line issues by having Barrett get rid of the ball quickly and let the playmakers make plays.

Although they’re a year older and more experienced, Price’s leadership, attitude and overall skillset will keep the offensive line on the same page. If they start to slip up, expect Price to keep the linemen together and make sure they’re mentally on the same page. If they are once again the weak link, Price will get the brunt of the blame.

With 12 seasons of experience, this Buckeye has been given one more shot.

After one of the worst seasons of his career — one that included being cut from the Bengals roster before the end of the regular season -- former Ohio State hero Mike Nugent has been given one more shot in the NFL, signing with the New York Giants.

The #Giants signed veteran K Mike Nugent, who will battle with Aldrick Rosas, the only other kicker on the roster.

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) August 1, 2017

Despite a rough season last year, he’s had a relatively successful career and will still go down as another kicking legend. So far in the league, he’s nailed 236 of 292 field goals attempts (80.8%) and 344 of 355 extra point attempts — six of the 11 misses were in 2016 alone — for an incredible 1,052 total points scored during his 12 season career.

The timing of his fall from grace comes on the heels of the NFL changing to rules for both field goal and extra point attempts. The league pushed kickers back 13 yards for the point after, dropping the success rate by almost 6% in 2016. It was a big story in Week 11 when 12 attempts were blocked or missed across the NFL.

The kicker signed a new contract with Cincinnati in 2016; a one-year deal worth $1.2 million. Having spent seven total season with the organization, Nugent saw both career-highs and lows back in his home state.

It wasn’t until he made his way back to Ohio in 2010, that he returned to the type of performance and production that Buckeye fans had come to expect from Nugent during his time in Columbus.

Nugent was drafted out of Ohio State in the second round of the 2005 NFL Draft (No. 47 overall) by the New York Jets. He spent four seasons -- the duration of his rookie contract — with the team, before splitting the 2009 season between the Arizona Cardinals and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Team Scarlet & Gray is just two wins away from $2 million!

Following an Ohio State basketball season that was little more than disappointing, the summer has brought a surprising shot in the arm for OSU hoops fans in need of a reason to get excited about Buckeye basketball again. First was the hiring of new head coach Chris Holtmann, shortly after the dismissal of the program’s winningest coach, Thad Matta. Then, once much of the Holtmann hoopla settled down, came The Basketball Tournament.

So far through four games, the single-elimination tournament has been a perfectly calibrated dose of nostalgia to remind Ohio State fans of some of the best moments of the Matta era, and also how exciting and dominant Ohio State basketball can be.

Tonight, a group of mostly Buckeye alums take to the floor just two wins away from claiming TBT’s ultimate, $2 million prize. Despite the big payday at the end of the tunnel, Jared Sullinger, Aaron Craft, William Buford, John Diebler, David Lighty, Dallas Lauderdale, and Evan Ravenel are playing for more than just pride and prize money; the team has dubbed their run in the tournament #ThisOnesForThad.

Nearly to a man, the former Buckeyes have spoken about how much it has meant to them to put on the Scarlet & Gray, non-trademark infringing uniforms one more time. Following an early, disappointing exit from the NCAA Tournament in 2011, these former OSU teammates are looking for redemption in Baltimore.

The squad will take on Team Challenge ALS at 7:00 p.m. on ESPN from Coppin State University.

How did we get here?

Under the watchful eye of team GM Scoonie Penn, Scarlet & Gray has made it look fairly easy through the first four rounds of TBT. In advancing out of the Midwest bracket, they have defeated their opponents by an average of 15.75 points per game, including a 25-point victory over the region’s top-ranked Golden Eagles in the regional final.

Still looking for an NBA home this fall, Sullinger has been efficient and, at times, dominant, averaging 14.5 points and nine rebounds per game in the shortened 36-minute contests. His once and current point guard, Craft has been stirring memories of his uber-efficient, well-rounded college days going for 10.5 points, 6.8 boards, and 5.3 assists per outing. He also has been earning some of his patented floor burns diving after loose balls.

What has made the team’s run so impressive is that contributions have come from just about everywhere. In the regional final, Lighty and Buford went for 23 and 21 respectively, while in the third round Craft and Sulinger turned in identical 21 point, nine rebound stat sheets, and in the second round, Diebler led the way with 21 points on 5-8 shooting from behind the arc.

The team has been effective at controlling the pace through the first four games. While it has been a few years, the team has benefited from the familiarity of having played together before, running more of an actual offense than many of their opponents, who resort to a pick-up ball mentality when the going gets tough.

The one bugaboo for the former Buckeyes has been their inability to hold onto the ball. They’ve averaged 14 turnovers per game thus far, but against the Golden Eagles in the regional finals, they only coughed it up seven times. If they want to eventually grab that $2 million, not giving the ball away so often will be a big help.

Who is Team Scarlet & Gray playing?

Team Challenge ALS is the lowest-seeded team remaining in the tournament, not that those rankings are based on much. Coached by Indiana Pacer Darren Collison, the team and its boosters have various incentives built into their success to benefit ALS charities and Ice Bucket Challenge founder Pete Frates who was roommates with Sean Marshall, the team’s GM and small forward, at Boston College.

Marshall, who averaged 21.5 points and eight rebounds in the first two games, sat out the tournament’s second weekend due to injury, but is optimistic about returning for the semifinals. In his stead, former NBA player Austin Daye joined the team for the third and fourth rounds, chipping in 10 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.

Like the Scarlet & Gray, they have somewhat coasted into the semifinals, winning by an average of 14.8 points per game. Therefore, if Craft, Sulllinger, and company can take control early, it will be interesting to see if this team, which has dealt with roster inconsistency thus far, can hang in with a team that has been playing together in one form or fashion for nearly seven years.

What’s next?

Should the Buckeyes advance to TBT’s championship game, they will either face the two-time defending champions, Overseas Elite, or the Syracuse alumni team, Boeheim’s Army. Overseas Elite has marched to the team’s third-straight semifinals in a most unusual fashion. Winning by an average of nine points per game, they have often had to recover from early deficits, including multiple double-digit holes against VCU alums Ram Nation in the regional finals.

Unlike the former Buckeyes, who have seen a player or two emerge to carry the mantle in each game, Overseas Elite has done it more by committee. In their two games during the tournament’s regional final weekend, they had five and six players score in double digits respectively.

Also, much like S&G has, they have been burdened by the turnover bug, committing a tournament-high 14.25 per game. If they are going to claim their second-straight $2 million prize, that will be a point of concern.

Want to take a guess what type of defense Boeheim’s Army plays? That’s right, the Hall of Fame coach’s signature 2-3 zone has made its way to the TBT, and helped the team overcome a 25-point deficit against Team FOE in the regional finals.

Former Orangemen Eric Devendorf and Donte Greene have led the team’s scoring with 18 and 17.3 points respectively. They have outscored their first four opponents by an average of 12 points, but that stat is deceiving when you figure in an opening round 99-66 win against DuBois Dream. Since then, it has been nip and tuck throughout, including a 106-100 double overtime victory in the second round against Iona alums, Gaelnation.

The Buckeyes could be earning multiple commitments this month.

You can almost feel it in the air. The college football season is soon approaching and the Ohio State football team is gearing up for a much-anticipated campaign. With the focus switching to the upcoming season, the college football recruiting world enters a dead period, meaning there will not be any in-person contact between recruits and coaches until Sept. 1. But recruiting never stops for Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes, and the team could have a booming August.

Ohio State makes the cut for 5-star CB

Ohio State inched one step further to acquiring one of its most coveted recruits of the 2018 recruiting cycle yesterday when cornerback Anthony Cook (Houston, TX/Lamar) listed the team as one of his final remaining schools.

Late Monday night, Cook took to Twitter to announce his top 3 remaining schools. Along with Ohio State, Texas and LSU also made the cut for the 5-star CB.

From Ten to Three! #Top3 pic.twitter.com/aJa2Ng0HdX

— Anthony Cook (@_ACook21) August 1, 2017

Cook is seen as one of the top prospects in the class across all recruiting databases. He is the No. 2 CB according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, and is the No. 13 overall recruit in the class.

Ohio State has always been held in high regard in Cook’s recruitment and the Buckeyes have been long seen as the favorite to land him.

If Cook was to choose Ohio State, he would mark the third CB commit in this year’s class. Pairing him with four-star Sevyn Banks and three-star Marcus Hooker would make this just another elite CB haul for Urban Meyer.

4-star OT set to announce August 12

With only two offensive line commits in this year’s recruiting class, you can bet that Urban Meyer is looking to add some more talent to a pool that currently includes four-star offensive guard Matthew Jones and four-star offensive tackle Max Wray. Fortunately, the Buckeyes may not have to wait long, as offensive tackle Darrell Simpson (Justin, TX/Northwest) announced he would be announcing his collegiate commitment on August 12.

The four-star OT recently listed Ohio State as one of his top eight schools along with Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas A&M, LSU, Ole Miss, and Arkansas.

Commitment announcement
Stay tuned.. @kae_annette @chic1987simpson @simplyCoachO @cooks_simpson

— Darrell Simpson™ (@king_simpson34) July 31, 2017

Simpson is regarded as one of the top offensive line recruits in the country, seen as the No. 13 OT by the 247Sports Composite Rankings and the No. 171 overall recruit.

Communication between Ohio State and Simpson has tapered off since the start of 2017 and hometown school Oklahoma is seen as the favorite to land Simpson. Instead, it seems the Buckeyes are solely focusing on five-star Ohio native Jackson Carman, who is currently projected to commit to Ohio State.

4-star CB set to commit August 22

Another Buckeye target set to announce his commitment next month is Donald “DJ” Johnson (Indianapolis, IN/North Central). The rising cornerback has dozens of scholarship offers including Notre Dame, Iowa, Penn State, Indiana, Minnesota, Illinois, Cincinnati, Western Michigan, and Ohio State.

Johnson has seen his recruitment take off this year, with the majority of his scholarship offers coming at the start of the new year. He has been busy this summer making visits to some of these schools, with the most recent being a trip to Columbus for Friday Night Lights.

The four-star CB has apparently seen all he needs to as he took to Twitter yesterday to announce his commitment date.

I WILL BE COMMITTING ON AUGUST 22nd ☘️ STAY TUNED

— DJ JOHNSON (@DjJohnson1127) July 31, 2017

However, it appears that Johnson hinted at a top two with emojis referring to Notre Dame and Iowa.

As was previously mentioned, Urban Meyer and Ohio State were the last to receive a visit from Johnson and while the visit was likely a success, Johnson seems to have narrowed down his schools to two.

This could be because of the limited space in Ohio State’s recruiting class this year. The Buckeyes received a commitment from three-star CB Marcus Hooker last week and are coveting other elite CB recruits like Anthony Cook. Johnson wouldn’t be the first blue-chip recruit to commit elsewhere due to the lack of room.

4-star ILB set to commit later this week

Ohio State’s best chance at earning its next commitment is with inside linebacker K’Vaughan Pope (Dinwiddie, VA/Dinwiddie). The four-star ILB has reportedly wanted to be a Buckeye for the last month, but has been waiting on clearance due to academic reasons.

Pope is scheduled to commit Aug. 4 and will likely be choosing between Ohio State and Georgia. While he has not been shy in his interest in becoming a Buckeye, his commitment is no longer a certainty. While having to wait to commit to the school, Pope took time to visit other schools to make sure the wait was worth it.

While these visits resulted in an increase of interest in Georgia for Pope, the Buckeyes are still seen as the runaway favorite to land the elite linebacker.

Pope is currently viewed as the No. 7 ILB in the country, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, and is the No. 168 overall prospect in the class.

If Pope elects to choose Ohio State, he will mark the third LB commit in this class, along with ILB Teradja Mitchell and OLB Dallas Gant.

Quick Hit

  • Five-star DE KJ Henry dropped Ohio State out of his top schools yesterday when he listed Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, Clemson, and Virginia Tech as his top five schools going forward.

Two defensive linemen and a running back made the top-50 list.

“With new offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson in the fold, expectations are sky high for Weber this year.”

-ESPN Staff

There are currently an estimated 15,000 college football players spread among 128 Division I programs. Of those, just over 250 are selected each year in the NFL Draft. With so many players on so many teams, it is difficult to gage talent across the board, but some players make such an outstanding impact for their teams that there is little doubt of them being counted among the best college players of the season. ESPN, partnering with Microsoft Research and The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, conducted a poll which pitted players at different positions directly against one another in order to determine the “official” rankings. The list reflected includes rankings for No. 26-50, with the top-25 coming out tomorrow.

Given Ohio State’s position as a top-five team in both the polls and in recruiting, it is unsurprising to see several Buckeyes listed among the nation’s top players heading into 2017. Coming in at No. 46, running back Mike Weber is the lowest of the ranked Ohio State players. The rising sophomore earned Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors last season after rushing for more than 1,000 yards and nine touchdowns. Weber was all the more impressive given that his performance came on the heels of the departure of first-round pick and Pro Bowl running back Ezekiel Elliott.

Next on the list for Ohio State are a pair of defensive ends in Tyquan Lewis (No. 36) and Sam Hubbard (No. 31). Both bring versatility to a loaded defensive line, which is expected to be one of (if not the) best units in the nation. While Lewis’s size and strength make him an excellent run-stopper, Hubbard, who played safety in high school in Cincinnati, brings the ability to both rush the quarterback or to drop back in coverage.

“Right now, the guy who performed like a starter is Damon Webb. He had his best stretch of football that I’ve ever seen in him...He’s going to come back and have a great senior year.”

-Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano, via Ryan Ginn, Land of 10

The loss of three first-round picks in the Ohio State secondary means that rebuilding will, naturally, be a tall order for that particular position group. What makes the replacement especially troublesome is the loss of safety Malik Hooker to the NFL after just one season as a starter--and what a season it was. Hooker was a unanimous first-team All-American with seven picks on the season, three of which he returned for touchdowns, and he made plays unequalled by any other safety in the country. He was part of a crew that finished third nationally in pass efficiency defense. With both starting cornerbacks also departing in Marshon Lattimore and Gareon Conley, the lone returning starter in the secondary is safety Damon Webb, a former four-star recruit from Michigan. An honorable mention All-Big Ten safety last season, Webb is entering his senior season and second year as a starter in Columbus. Defensive coordinator Greg Schiano had high praise for Webb in the spring, acknowledging that he has entered into his “best stretch of football,” and expressed optimism for his senior season.

While it seems unlikely that Webb can match Hooker’s feats on his own, he’ll have some assistance in fellow senior Erick Smith, who has earned accolades from former Ohio State safety Tyvis Powell before the 2015 season. One of the more experienced safeties remaining on the roster, Smith has played extensively as a backup at Ohio State. Even so, sophomore Jordan Fuller and incoming freshman Isaiah Pryor are still in the running for the starting role. Smith, Fuller and Pryor all have outstanding talent, but the question remains as to their ability to mesh with Webb opposite them, as well as the rest of the secondary. With the combined talents of the group, the secondary might be able to reach the level of the 2016 unit.

“The Buckeyes are an interesting combination of experience and youth. At key positions...Ohio State has plenty of proven talent. At others, they simply have plenty of unproven talent.”

-Bill Rabinowitz, The Columbus Dispatch

Ohio State’s season opener against Indiana is just a month away, with fall camp starting this week. And while many of the positions and units would seem to be well-oiled machines by this point (e.g., the defensive line), others have a number of questions remaining that will need to be resolved before August 31.

For starters is the wealth of young talent in the 2016 and 2017 recruiting classes. Last season, Urban Meyer was not shy about putting freshmen in the game, playing 11 true freshmen from the 2016 class. This change of heart came just a year after Meyer redshirted 21 of 25 freshmen in the 2015 class. All told, the Buckeyes had a whopping 44 freshmen on the roster last season, with nearly 30 seeing the field. With more highly-touted prospects coming in this season, several could see the field and some could even compete for starting roles.

While senior J.T. Barrett had the quarterback job on lockdown, his primary receivers remain a question, especially under Kevin Wilson’s new offensive scheme. Terry McLaurin, K.J. Hill and Johnnie Dixon all had good spring practices. Interestingly, all three have been with the program for at least three seasons, Hill as a redshirt sophomore and McLaurin and Dixon as juniors, but none have yet made the impact expected of three former four-star recruits. Binjimen Victor and Parris Campbell, after showing flashes of greatness last season, are expected to contribute more heading into the fall, with Campbell the supposed replacement for Curtis Samuel at H-back.

One of the other key positions to be filled is Billy Price’s vacated spot at right guard. And Meyer says there are still seven possible candidates for the job.Fortunately, the rest of the line remains stable, with Price at center, Jamarco Jones at left tackle, Michael Jordan at left guard and Isaiah Prince at right tackle.

The Buckeyes have two primary candidates to step into first-round draft pick's rather large hole at safety. "The guys that really, you would say naturally coming are Jordan Fuller and Erick Smith," Schiano said last Thursday. "Those two guys are [there].

Taking a look at how the Buckeyes are doing at their first training camp in the league.

We are just a few weeks away from the regular season kick-off of the 2017 NFL season, and there are quite a few former Ohio State stars looking forward to their professional debut.

The Buckeyes had another impressive draft class, with seven rookies picked in the seven rounds of the 2017 NFL Draft, and one other signed as an undrafted free agent — it was almost four, but Dontre Wilson never landed a contract with the Chargers due to medical concerns with his foot. Craig Fada was invited to the Houston Texans minicamp, but didn’t come away with a contract, and the same for wideout Corey Smith who tried out for the Cincinnati Bengals but didn’t sign a deal (h/t Rebecca Toback, CincyJungle).

As they get ready for their first Big Time game against, and with, players they’ve watched and idolized for years, they first need to find their place on a roster, as teams are now reporting for training camp.

Noah Brown

The wide receiver was one of the first rookies to report to training camp this fall, with the Cowboys suiting up for the Hall of Fame game this Thursday. The Cowboys will face the Cardinals in Canton, Ohio for the annual event, with Brown expected to see his first bit of playing time at the next level.

Gareon Conley

At the start of training camp, Conley still needed to sign on the dotted line, but it didn’t take long before the rookie had finalized his first NFL contract with the Oakland Raiders. However, it can’t all be good news, Conley opened camp on the Raiders PUP list.

Pat Elflein

Originally slated as a guy who could move all over the line, Elflein is staring down the starting center job for the Minnesota Vikings. He’s gotten some reps with the first team early on in camp, and is competing with Nick Easton for the role. If he’s anything like the Buckeye centers to come before him — Nick Mangold and Corey Linsley — Elflein will be the longterm solution for the team at the center position.

Malik Hooker

After spending most of the offseason and spring on the sidelines, Hooker was excited to get to work for the Colts. Alongside four of his fellow Buckeyes, he was looking to join Tyvis Powell in the defensive backfield and make contributions for the team right away.

That goal was short lived after tweaking his hamstring early-on in training camp. He was placed on the Colts PUP list for a few days, but was removed over the weekend. Hopefully, the injury wasn’t more than a flair-up and Hooker can get back on the field as soon as possible.

Cameron Johnston (UDFA)

The Buckeye punter is still hanging in there at Philadelphia Eagles training camp. The team already has a solid starter in Donnie Jones, but the 37-year old veteran could be hanging up his cleats soon, and if so.... enter Aussie-punter extraordinaire Cam Johnston.

While some aren’t expecting Johnston to make the final 53-man roster, or even make the practice squad, I’m a bit more optimistic. Despite Jones saying he’s got about four more years in the league, they wont necessarily be with the Eagles. And with the organization turning to younger talent at several positions, they’d be smart to keep their next No. 1 connected with the team.

Marshon Lattimore

One of the Buckeye rookies expected to make the starting lineup right away, Lattimore is already impressing the New Orleans Saints. With the team quickly filling up with former Scarlet and Gray players, Lattimore joins Vonn Bell on the defensive side of the ball, with the rookie switching his jersey from No. 34 to No. 23 — Lattimore wore No. 2 at Ohio State.

Our friends at Canal Street Chronicles took in some of Lattimore’s training camp performance.

Marshon Lattimore had some good moments in practice again, forcing a fumble on Daniel Lasco, and he had a couple of good plays setting the edge. In some coverages, he was playing a good 9 yards off the receiver, but that didn’t seem to be an issue at all.

There was some concern during camp on Monday, when Lattimore went back to the locker room with the training staff. He did not return to practice, however head coach Sean Payton didn’t mention a specific injury, just that it might’ve been a hydration issue, but he wasn’t sure.

Raekwon McMillan

The linebacker is already taking reps with the first team, and despite being the new guy on the block, is already calling out plays when it’s his turn in the middle linebacker rotation. No one from Buckeye Nation should be surprised to hear that McMillan is the likely “Next Man Up” to represent #LBU, but the time he commits off the field to learning the playbook and improving his craft, could make him one of the best to come out of Ohio State.

He’s had to make a lot of adjustments, and admits the tempo has increased immensely, but McMillan was always been solid mentally, and that foundation will help him ease into his new role as NFL linebacker.

Curtis Samuel

The Carolina Panthers may have had one of the best draft classes of any team this year. Not only did they snag Ohio State H-back Curtis Samuel, but they also snagged running back Christian McCaffrey to boost their offense. Quarterback Cam Newton will have no shortage of targets this fall, with Samuel lining up predominantly at receiver.

Samuel has been held out of the past few days of practice, but hasn’t been added to the team’s PUP list, yet. With the Panther’s trading or not re-signing both Buckeye receivers Ted Ginn Jr. and Corey “Philly” Brown this offseason, they’ll definitely need Samuel’s versatility to fill some of the offensive holes.
