Madden features more than 40 playable former Buckeyes.

It’s that time of year again, friends.

Madden season is upon us.

The latest installment of sports fans’ favorite only football game hit stores today with a promise to be the best version yet.

But you know what else Madden NFL 18 has to offer?

Buckeyes. Lots and lots of Buckeyes.

This year, Madden will feature at least 46 playable former Ohio State alumni. Their ratings range from Ezekiel Elliott (90 overall) and Joey Bosa (88), to Curtis Grant (60) and Jake McQuaide (44).

Here’s a complete list in descending order:

I, for one, can’t wait to play with McQuaide (he actually was elected to the Pro Bowl last season).

Given the awesome amount of OSU players, we decided to put together a legit Madden 18 dream team of Buckeyes. Some slots were easier to fill (Cardale Jones is your quarterback, folks), while others required serious thought.

Let’s take a look at the All-Buckeye Madden squad.

Offense

QB: Cardale Jones

The only quarterback in Madden from OSU, Cardale Jones may be rated a 66 overall, but his throw power (96) and accuracy (71) aren’t too shabby. I’ll take a semi-mobile, inconsistent passer with a rocket for an arm any day.

RB: Ezekiel Elliott

Who needs a quarterback when you have Ezekiel Elliott lining up in the backfield? He’s the fifth-highest rated running back (90) in the game and is backed up by former Buckeye teammate Carlos Hyde (83). Good luck slowing these two down.

Backups: Carlos Hyde

FB: Rod Smith

Technically, Rod Smith isn’t a fullback anymore, but his 6-foot-3, 235-pound frame and strength rating (80) make him a perfect candidate to clear lanes as a blocker and split out wide as a pass-catcher.

WR: Michael Thomas

A quarterback rated 66 overall should have no problem throwing to stud second-year wideout Michael Thomas. @Cantguardmike’s historic rookie campaign earned him an 84 overall rating, not to mention a 91 catch rating. Behind Thomas waits Ted Ginn Jr. and Braxton Miller.

Backups: Ted Ginn Jr., Braxton Miller

WR: Terrelle Pryor

What a difference a year makes, huh? Terrelle Pryor’s pro career appeared to be floundering before the 2016 season began, and boy did he change that in a hurry. Pryor legitimized himself as a playmaker at receiver and his 83 overall rating is well-deserved.

Backups: Philly Brown, Noah Brown

TE: Jeff Heuerman

Another pair of former teammates in Jeff Heuerman and Nick Vannett reunite to form a solid duo at tight end. The steady, reliable Heuerman (79 catch rating) gets the nod over Vannett here.

Backups: Nick Vannett

Offensive Line

An offensive line featuring nothing but Buckeyes is just unfair in Madden. We penciled in Taylor Decker (82 overall) at left tackle as he heads into Year Two, with Andrew Norwell (84) and Jack Mewhort (82) holding things down at guard.

Corey Linsley (82) fills out the interior at center. The only player with an overall rating under 80 is Alex Boone (79), who we moved to right tackle instead of his natural position at guard. Rookie Pat Elflein (73) provides good depth and rounds out an excellent O-line.

Defense

Defensive Line

Joey Bosa starts us off here up front on defense. He’s rated as an 88 overall for a reason and anchors the defensive line. Veteran Cameron Heyward (81) mirrors him at the opposite end. Both Johnathan Hankins (76) and Adolphus Washington (71) compliment Bosa and Heyward nicely in the trenches.

Backups: Michael Bennett

OLB: Darron Lee

This could’ve been a toss-up between rookie Raekwon McMillan and second-year Darron Lee (both are rated 72 overall), but a season-ending injury to McMillan cleared that decision right up. Lee’s 80 tackling rating, coupled with his sideline-to-sideline speed (87) and acceleration (88), make him a great player to user-control.

Backups: Joshua Perry

MLB: Ryan Shazier

On the other hand, you could play with this guy. Few linebackers in all of Madden are as athletic as 81 overall Ryan Shazier, who has a 90 in both speed and acceleration, as well as an 88 in agility.

Backups: Curtis Grant

— Jimmy Norkewicz (@dorkewicz) May 20, 2017
OLB: John Simon

Remember John Simon? If you haven’t kept tabs on his NFL career, let me fill you in: he good. Simon has grown as a productive role player and his 79 overall rating proves as much.

CB: Bradley Roby

The top cornerback on the team is Bradley Roby and his surprisingly low 77 overall rating. His primary backup is 2017 first-round pick Marshon Lattimore (76), who’s rated just a hair shy of Roby.

Backups: Marshon Lattimore

CB: Eli Apple

It was a tale of two rookie seasons for Eli Apple (77 overall) in 2016 and it reflects in Madden. Apple’s 6-foot-1, 200-pound rangy size contrasts well with his man coverage (81) and zone coverage (77) ratings.

Backups: Gareon Conley, Doran Grant

FS: Malik Hooker

Although it was tempting to slide Kurt Coleman over here from strong safety, I have confidence in star rookie Malik Hooker holding his own as a starter. He’s a 76 overall and has an 81 zone coverage rating with all-around athleticism that makes him an ideal user-controlled player.

Backups: Vonn Bell

SS: Malcolm Jenkins

Outside of Bosa, no other defender on this team is as impactful and disruptive as 85 overall Malcolm Jenkins. He’s one of the best safeties in Madden and is anything but easy to throw at due to his play recognition (88) and zone coverage (75) ratings. Coleman (78 overall) is as capable a backup as you’ll find.

Backups: Kurt Coleman

Malcolm Jenkins : 6 tackles & 2 INT's including a 34-yard pick 6 pic.twitter.com/SCXzuuvFSt

— Lee Harvey (@MusikFan4Life) December 23, 2016
K: Mike Nugent

It remains to be seen if he’ll actually make an NFL roster or not, and that’s fine. This is Madden and it doesn’t matter if veteran Mike Nugent finds a home in the league. He’s the only kicker from OSU in the game this year.

P: Cameron Johnston

An undrafted rookie punter that won’t start the season? Count us in. Like Nugent, Cameron Johnston is the lone Buckeye punter in Madden. Johnston averaged 46.7 yards per punt in 2016 and was named the Eddleman-Fields Big Ten Punter of the Year.

KR/PR: Curtis Samuel

We have a couple options for return specialist on this team. Ginn and Corey 'Philly' Brown are both explosive and can obviously field kickoffs and punts. How could I turn down rookie Curtis Samuel, though? His 95 speed rating, 93 acceleration, and 91 agility are too much to ignore.

Can the Buckeyes keep L'Christian "Blue" Smith at home?

We’ve made it this far and there’s no turning back. Finally, after much anticipation, there is officially under a week until Ohio State plays Big Ten foe Indiana in the first conference season opener in thirty years. With the Buckeyes heading west and all eyes on former Indiana head coach Kevin Wilson (now with Ohio State), the drama for this matchup has certainly drawn interest from the nation as ESPN’s College Gameday will also be in attendance. With recruiting taking a little bit of a backseat with the season’s approach and rightfully so, there’s still some action that could give the Buckeyes something to celebrate prior to next Thursday’s opener.

All signs for Blue pointing Scarlet?

A name certainly not new to the recruiting scene for the Buckeyes, L’Christian “Blue” Smith, is set to make his final decision this coming Sunday on ESPN when his Warriors head to Pennsylvania for their first game of the season. Smith is a standout athlete at one of the top programs in all of Ohio, Huber Heights Wayne.

3 days.....

— BLUE (@bluesmith_) August 24, 2017

A recruitment that has been followed closely over the past year or more, Blue has been a hot commodity at times. A two horse race for the most part between Ohio State and Kentucky, Blue recently made sure everyone paying attention was aware that nearby Cincinnati was also still in the mix. However, any school but Kentucky or Ohio State as the destination would be a major surprise.

From the get go, the Buckeyes being the home team and easily a top three program in the country would have to appeal to Blue. But the fans and Kentucky in general certainly pulled at the heartstrings for one of the nation’s top prospects. So much, in fact, that Kentucky was thought to be the clear cut frontrunner for Blue. It also helped Big Blue Nation's cause that there was a rumor of Smith being looked at by Ohio State as a tight end and not a receiver.

Hold the phone, though. A trip to Columbus this past May meant Blue and his father meeting personally with Urban Meyer and ironing out the situation and shutting down any tight end rumor. L’Christian came away feeling the Ohio State love. Fast forward to now, and the good news may be all but set in stone as the Crystal Ball picks coming in are doing nothing but favoring Ohio State.

With Sunday fast approaching, Urban Meyer and receiver coach Zach Smith have to love what they’re hearing regarding the nation’s fourth-best athlete and Ohio’s fourth-best player in all of 2018. A Sunday announcement on ESPN set for 1:00pm should in all likelihood bring Ohio State not only their first receiver commit for the 2018 class, but maybe even more importantly, keeping one of Ohio’s best at home to suit up in the Scarlet and Gray. However, only time will tell.

For your viewing pleasure

If you’re interested in what Ohio State is bringing to the table in the 2018 class, then look no more. It’s evident Urban Meyer plans on making history with this current recruiting class. Last year, Ohio State’s 2017 class earned themselves the highest average star ranking 247Sports has ever tallied. This year looks to be no different, as the Buckeyes are absolutely loaded and have zero plans on stopping that trend any time soon.

One commit to the 2018 class, Josh Proctor, the ninth-best safety in America and Oklahoma’s third-best prospect of any position, competes in his second game of the season tonight. If it’s anything like his first, Buckeye fans will be pleased with what is coming in the near future. You can even view it for yourself this evening. It’s a great time to be a Ohio State football fan and until next Thursday, watching the future of Buckeye football will have to do.

An increased emphasis on rushing the quarterback will likely see Bosa improve on the five sacks he registered as a true freshman.

“He’s ridiculous right now. That name is very good right now. Need some more Bosas.”

-Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer on defensive end Nick Bosa via Mitch Stacy, Associated Press

If it was possible, Urban Meyer would love to make a whole defensive line consisting of Bosas. Not only did Joey Bosa make a huge impact at Ohio State, and has impressed in his short time in the NFL, but his younger brother Nick is poised to create chaos in the backfield of opponents for the Buckeyes. While Joey made an almost immediate impact for the Buckeyes as a freshman, it took Nick a little longer because of a torn ACL he suffered during his senior year in high school. Even while dealing with recovery from the knee injury, Bosa still was able to register five sacks for the Buckeyes as a true freshman.

Nick Bosa will also have to deal with a little more competition on the defensive line than his older brother did. With guys like Tyquan Lewis, Jalyn Holmes, and Sam Hubbard at defensive end, snaps will be a little harder to come by for Bosa. While the younger Bosa might not be able to pile up the stats that his older brother did, it doesn’t mean he won’t be able to make as big of an impact for Ohio State. If anything, the rotation Ohio State will employ at defensive end will likely help Bosa since it’ll keep him fresher against offensive linemen who will be worn down from trying to deal with the Buckeyes’ depth on the defensive line.

What has Bosa really excited for this year is the change in scheme the Buckeye defensive line will employ under Greg Schiano. Last year under Luke Fickell, the Buckeye defensive line had to tie up the offensive line to allow for the linebackers to make plays. Under Schiano, the defensive line can now focus more on creating pressure in the backfield. After outstanding production from the defensive line last year, it’s scary they could be even better this year.

“We have some decisions to make. I don’t know the answer to that. We’re going to sit down and talk after tomorrow and formulate a plan.”

-Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano via Bill Rabinowitz, The Columbus Dispatch

With the kickoff to Ohio State’s 2017 season just a week away, there are still a few decisions to make about who will take the field for the Buckeyes. On the defensive side of the football, there are still questions about who will be lining up at safety opposite Damon Webb. The safety battle has been narrowed to Jordan Fuller and Erick Smith, with defensive coordinator Greg Schiano seeing upside with both. Fuller brings size to the table, while Smith has speed that has impressed so far. It is possible that both safeties rotate until one is able to grab a firm hold on the position.

On offense, there is a three-way battle between Matthew Burrell, Branden Bowen, and Malcolm Pridgeon to take the right guard slot which was vacated when Billy Price moved to center. Unlike at safety, a rotation at guard is less than preferred, but offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson didn’t rule out the possibility. Each of the three guards have had moments where they have looked like they would take hold of the job, only to have their competition close the gap. Wilson is hoping the practices leading up to next week’s game will see one of the guards stand out and make the decision for Wilson easier, and if not they’ll entertain the option of a committee at guard.

“Coach (Urban) Meyer always says it’s a rotating program, when guys leave, guys have to step up. If we don’t have anybody that’s of the same talent, if not better, we lose. The guy that’s in that room has to step up, has to make plays, has to be that guy.”

-Ohio State H-back Parris Campbell via Colin Hass-Hill, The Lantern

It is no small task in replacing a player like Curtis Samuel, but Ohio State is hoping Parris Campbell can be that guy. Campbell is a gifted athlete who has impressed since he was a freshman in high school with not only his speed but also with his agility. While many speedsters have mainly straight-line speed, Campbell is able to change directions, which makes him dangerous on the football field when he gets going.

For the most part, Campbell’s career at Ohio State has gotten off to a slow start, hauling in just 13 catches for 121 yards and no touchdowns. One area where Campbell was able to impress was as a kick returner, averaging 27.8 yards per return, which was 11th-best in the country. With Campbell stepping into Samuel’s spot he should be able to get the football in his hands more and showcase the speed which helped to bring him to Ohio State.

Another young Buckeye has been thrust into the spotlight.

So you’ve probably heard the news by now.

In the midst of a neck-and-neck battle for the backup quarterback job, Joe Burrow is out indefinitely after undergoing hand surgery on Tuesday. He broke a bone in his throwing hand on Monday during practice and should be available around midseason.

That being said, it’s likely you’ll never see him lace it up in Scarlet and Gray for any meaningful amount of time.

Burrow’s injury means he’s out of the running for the backup spot this year, which officially -- by default -- belongs to Dwayne Haskins. Injuries are an unfortunate part of sports and in Burrow’s case, it could’ve cost him a legitimate shot at being the guy under center at Ohio State.

Dwayne Haskins Spring Game Highlights. pic.twitter.com/fKMgdvYMgi

— tOSURecruiting (@tOSURecruiting) April 18, 2017

It’s tough to imagine him catching Haskins, and Burrow isn’t getting any younger. He’ll be a redshirt junior come next autumn and will have to compete with not only Haskins, but stud dual-threat signal-caller Tate Martell. The odds of Burrow distancing himself from both are exceedingly low.

My guess is that the Ohio native transfers in the near future. There’s been speculation that one of the Buckeyes backup quarterbacks eventually would and it makes all of the sense in the world for Burrow.

Regardless, when J.T. Barrett is gone after this season, the next man up is Haskins.

The former four-star from Potomac, Maryland has really impressed this offseason as a redshirt freshman. His touch, rocket arm, and aggressiveness remind more than a few of Cardale Jones, including Barrett.

“He has kind of a mentality almost like Cardale," Barrett said, per Eleven Warriors. "His arm can take him places, but then also too, it can get him in some tight spots as well. But when he is set up to throw the ball and he is in rhythm, he can rip it."

Haskins is also confident in what he can do on the field. In his eyes, there isn’t throw he can’t make.

"I'm just really confident … and know that I can make any throw on the field," Haskins said. "So when I go play, it’s just like if someone's open, I'm going to throw it to them. If they're covered a little bit, I feel like I can get it in the window and throw it."

OSU is nearing their season-opener and back in familiar territory with Burrow sidelined. But – and there is a but – fans can rest assured that Haskins is as good as it gets when it comes to backups.

After all, he is the Buckeyes future at quarterback.

Shoulder surgery?

Final update:

My daughter is now 13 months post surgery. Her last summer tournament at the end of July she threw without any discomfort or pain and threw well. Her last session with her catching trainer showed a consistent pop time of 1.9 (was 1.75 prior to injury) and she (trainer) thinks it will get back to 1.8 as she continues to strengthen her legs under the guidance of her college s&c coach.

I guess if anyone asks me down the road how was she able to return to form after a labrum repair my answer would be 'be ultra conservative'. She wasn't allowed to start a throwing program for 8 full months. This time was built strengthening and bringing back her flexibility. Lots of ice after every workout or rehab in that 8 months period. I've seen stories of pitchers and other athletes trying to return to the game at 4 months and that's just too soon in my opinion. We did a lot of research on Michael Pineda's labrum injury and how he came back to the Yankees throwing 98mph and the consensus was they didn't rush his rehab after the surgery.
I'm not saying it would still work for everyone like it did for my daughter. But if you have a second repair your throwing career is over any way. Why not give it more time to heal completely before throwing. A volleyball player at my daughter's high school had the surgery. She (her parents) rushed her back and now she no longer can play volleyball and will need a second repair because her shoulder now dislocates. I would like to punch her dad for that.

In any event, thank you to all who listened to me through the ordeal. Malone will play at Firestone next month and she should see some time in those fall games. Can't wait!

Starters should see more snaps, and bubble guys will need to prove a point as Buckeyes prep for the regular season.

Week 3 of the NFL preseason is about as close to “regular football” as you’re going to get ahead of the season opener. Most teams will utilize a good portion of their first-team talent, with the second- and third-team guys getting most of their reps in the final game next week.

There aren’t too many Buckeyes considered “on the bubble” but there are a few guys fighting for an active roster spot. Undrafted free agent, rookie Cameron Johnston is hoping to at least snag a practice squad spot with the Eagles, Tyvis Powell is vying for a spot on the final roster of his third NFL team, and Doran Grant is battling for a job in Jacksonville without much practice squad eligibility left.

Also, a former Ohio State captain, defensive back Christian Bryant will get one more shot at an NFL career with the Cleveland Browns. The Ohio team signed the Buckeye earlier in the week -- marking the only former Scarlet and Gray player suiting up for an NFL team in the Buckeye state.

Here’s how to catch all the former Ohio State stars in action this week(end):

Things to watch for Thursday night

The Eagles are hosting the Dolphins this week, and after a week of joint practice, are facing off Thursday. Cameron Johnston had Philly beat writers actually talking about punters after his Week 2 performance, and with the team’s current starter closing in on the end of his career, Johnston could still find a longterm spot with the Eagles.

In the second game of the night, Curtis Samuel might finally make his NFL debut. He’s been sidelined since the first day of Panthers’ training camp, but started taking more reps in practice over the last week and could finally get some action against the Jags. Jacksonville CB Doran Grant is still clamoring for a roster spot, and he only has two games left to make his point.

Things to watch for Friday night

The only real draw Friday is seeing whether Nick Vannett gets the start again, and whether or not he’ll actually be targeted at all. The Buckeye tight end hasn’t seen much action on offense despite taking a considerable number of snaps. It’s no surprise that one of Vannett’s selling points was his blocking ability, but the guy has good hands and could catch the ball if given the chance.

Things to watch for Saturday night

Two big games for Buckeyes on Saturday, including the Jets v. Giants and Colts v. Steelers. All four squads are loaded with former Ohio State talent, and some are fighting for roster spots. Additionally, DB Christian Bryant will make his debut for the Browns on Saturday evening.

Several former Ohio State stars have been battling injuries this week and could miss the Week 3 contest, including: Eli Apple (ankle), Braxton Miller (ankle), and Ryan Shazier (hamstring). The Colts have been slow to let Jack Mewhort get back to field after finishing last season injured, but that is likely out of an abundance of caution to have him ready to go in Week 1 of the regular season.

Things to watch for Sunday

Two games into the preseason and Terrelle Pryor Sr. hasn’t quite shown the kind of damage he can do for Washington. He’s likely to see more snaps this Sunday than he has to date for his new team, but there isn’t too much concern about his production heading into the regular season. Washington saw several of their offensive playmakers leave in the offseason, so Pryor can expect to be targeted often.

In the late game, rookie Pat Elflein is still looking for his spot on the offensive line, taking snaps both at center and guard. Despite looking good snapping the ball, there was some early concern that he’d need a louder voice to be heard on the field. Still, where he lines up on Sunday could be a good indicator of his spot come the start of the season.
