Former Ohio State interception-magnet Malik Hooker finally made his NFL debut for the Indianapolis Colts

Full recap of the NFL Buckeyes in Week 1 of the preseason.

The NFL regular season is just weeks away, but several former Ohio State stars suited up for their first taste of life in the league. More than a few Buckeyes missed out on Week 1 of the preseason due to injuries -- or suspension — but there were quite a few who found the spotlight.

Colts finally get a healthy Malik Hooker

After missing out on the NFL Combine, OTAs and rookie camp, former Ohio State interception-magnet Malik Hooker finally suited up for the Colts. He was activated off of the PUP list just two weeks ago, and finished his first contest with four solo tackles in the first half of his first preseason game.

Of the five Buckeyes currently on the Colts’ roster, three were newly acquired in the offseason. Tvyis Powell might be the one most vigorously fighting for a spot on the final 53-man roster (recording one assisted tackle in Week 1), with Johnathan Hankins and John Simon expected to be long-term answers for Indianapolis.

Simon pretty much assured himself on the final roster with this interception against Matthew Stafford. The linebacker has been an up-and-coming defender the past few seasons, and could finally get his chance to shine on a defense that doesn’t include names like J.J. Watt and Jadeveon Clowney.

Year 3 players trying to survive in the NFL

The 2015 NFL Draft class out of Ohio State was full of promise, but heading into their third season in the league, are looking toward some make-or-break seasons.

DT Michael Bennett was drafted in Round 6 to the Jaguars, and played in 13 games his rookie season, recording 10 total tackles and 0.5 sack. After sustaining a calf injury during the 2016 preseason, he spent the rest of his second year on IR. The tackle hasn’t had quite the production that the team was expecting when he was coming out of Ohio State, and he needs to make a spot for himself on the depth chart.

Bennett’s Buckeye teammate and draft-mate CB Doran Grant also found himself with Jacksonville this offseason. After being drafted in Round 4 by the Pittsburgh Steelers, Grant has spent the last few seasons bouncing from team-to-team and from practice squad-to-active roster. Once again, he’s looking for a place on the Jags’ 53-man roster, but he’s running out of practice squad eligibility — quickly.

— Mark Daniels (@MarkDanielsPJ) August 7, 2017

After missing his rookie season due to an injury sustained just after the draft, TE Jeff Heuerman needs a big year in Denver to keep his spot on the roster. His second season with the team resulted in only nine catches on 17 targets for 141 yards. Not for nothing, he averaged 15.7 yards per catch and could be the Broncos’ deep threat if he can maintain some form of consistency — which he has yet to do, even into the 2017 preseason.

Mike Nugent is hanging in there

After spending the end of the 2016 regular season at home, without a team, the Buckeye legend was finally signed just ahead of training camp by the New York Giants. Heading into his 13th (!) season in the NFL, Nugent went 2-for-2 on field goal attempts in Week 1 of the preseason, and had three kick-offs averaging 66.7 yards.

The Chargers have quite the Buckeye collection

With the recent addition of quarterback Cardale Jones from Buffalo, the Los Angeles Chargers have added a familiar face for defenders Joey Bosa and Joshua Perry to practice against.

Jones is expected to be a long-term solution for the Chargers, and in Week 1 of the preseason, has started his campaign for the No. 2 spot, over current backup Kellen Clemens. Despite confirming he has a strong arm, the QB did struggle in his first game for Los Angeles, completing only 2-of-9 passes for 50 yards, with an additional 18 yards off two rushes.

Cardale Jones' first throw was a DEEP dart down the seam!!! pic.twitter.com/6349Bi9DJ9

— TheRenderNFL (@TheRenderNFL) August 14, 2017

Bosa saw some snaps early on in the first preseason game, made two tackles, and showed that alongside Melvin Ingram, the Chargers could have one of the most dangerous pass rushes in the NFL. Perry likewise snagged a tackle, as he tries to earn more defense snaps to add to his repertoire on special teams.

The Saints receivers are Buckeye legends

The Saints are one of the NFL teams with the most Buckeye talent on roster. Wideout Michael Thomas picked up in Year 2 exactly where he left off after his rookie season — ready to win some post-season awards. He snagged 17 yards off of two catches in the first preseason game, and is securely the starter at his position.

The team added another Buckeye receiver this offseason, Ted Ginn Jr., who was signed in free agency from the Panthers. Ginn has had a roller coaster of a career, including years where he was used solely in the return game and others where he was a consistent deep threat for a burgeoning offense. He was brought in to New Orleans for the latter, but unfortunately, his sole target during the Week 1 preseason game was dropped in the endzone for what would have been an uncontested score.

Gotta catch those Ted Ginn Jr... it's all good though you probably be one of our biggest playmakers at the WR position. #saints #whodat pic.twitter.com/L2kovcpcX8

Quick hits

  • Steelers’ DE Cam Heyward spent the second-half of the 2016 season on IR, but was still a visible leader on the sideline. Eager to get back to the field, the Buckeye wanted to snag as many snaps as he could get, and even managed to bat down a pass early in the game.
  • The Buffalo Bills have been making some head-scratching moves over the past week, most notably sending wideout Sammy Watkins to the Rams. This could be a good thing for Buckeye Corey “Philly” Brown who will face less competition on the depth chart. In the Week 1 preseason game, Brown had three receptions for 27 yards.
  • Rookie OL Pat Elflein isn’t the automatic starting center for the Vikings — just yet, at least —, and despite competing for that role, has also been taking practice snaps at left guard as well.
  • Year 2 TE Nick Vannett got the start in the Week 1 preseason game for the Seahawks, but that’s about where his stat line stops. He didn’t see any targets, but has definitely grown as a blocker, and could see his role increase as he continues learning under the starter, Jimmy Graham.
  • Punter Cam Johnston is the only UDFA still with a team out of the 2017 draft class, and he was able to get off two punts for the Philadelphia Eagles last week. In an effort to make the final 53-man roster, or at least the practice squad, Johnston’s two punts went for 83 yards total with a long of 49 yards — one went out of bounds and the other was a downed punt.

Injury report

The regular season hasn’t even started yet, but there are already several Buckeyes already hitting up the medical tent.

  • Panthers’ wide receiver Curtis Samuel didn’t see any action in what would have been his NFL debut, due to a lingering hamstring issue that he’s been dealing with throughout training camp.
  • Another pair of rookies to miss their first NFL preseason game, was Oakland Raiders’ CB Gareon Conley, who was out with a shin injury, and New Orleans Saints’ CB Marshon Lattimore, who was out with a minor knee injury.
  • The Dolphins were dealt a big blow when LB Raekwon McMillan tore his ACL in the first NFL preseason game of his career, and is expected to miss his entire rookie season.
  • Likewise, following surgery, the Detroit Lions’ OT Taylor Decker will miss his second year in the league blocking for Matthew Stafford.
  • After being checked out in the locker room during the Texans’ Week 1 preseason game, Braxton Miller’s undisclosed injury isn’t expected to be serious, but he did miss the team’s first practice back, with reports of “lingering soreness”.
  • The Steelers were without LB Ryan Shazier who has been dealing with a lower body injury for over a week. The team, the league, and pretty much every football fan knows what a beast Shazier can be, so missing some preseason game time isn’t too big a deal.

The head coach also called freshman Tate Martell a ‘weapon.’

On Monday, Ohio State Football’s head coach Urban Meyer met with the media to provide an update on the team’s progress during fall camp. With roughly two and a half weeks until the Buckeyes open the season, Meyer said that preparations have moved to a more traditional “game week” structure, focusing on getting ready for what the Indiana Hoosiers do on both sides of the ball.

The Buckeyes will kick off the 2017 campaign against conference foe Indiana on Thursday, August 31st in Bloomington at 8:00pm ET.

Position Battles

Meyer said that he is pleased with how the competition has progressed, but this coming Saturday’s scrimmage will go a long way to determining who will be the team’s No. 2 QB.

  • The head coach said that Martell was an offensive weapon, and added that he was a great, fast-twitch athlete.

Meyer said of Tate, “He’s a very confident guy... I just love where he’s at right now... He’s a real competitive guy, he wants to play real bad.”

  • In terms of the battle to be the team’s starting right guard, Meyer said that Malcolm Pridgeon, Branden Bowen, Demetrius Knox and Matthew Burrell are still in contention. There is currently a leader, but the coach declined to say whom that would be.
  • Meyer added that a number of freshmen will have their black stripes removed at today’s practice, but didn’t spoil the surprise.
On-field Performance

  • Meyer says that having seven fifth-year senior starters on the team has been incredibly valuable. He doesn’t believe that he has ever had that type of senior leadership before.
  • Meyer declined to comment on suspended defensive tackle Mike Hill.
  • The head coach added that the biggest improvement for Barrett during camp has been his passing accuracy.
  • He also said that the starting QB has developed an incredible relationship with new quarterback coach Ryan Day.
  • He added that the fact that the offensive line is more experienced has given him a chance to be develop more of a relationship with the wide receivers.

No. 1 CB in 2020 earns Ohio State offer

The Buckeyes are in the race for one of the premier defenseman in the 2020 class.

Ohio State awarded two scholarships earlier in the weekend to Elijaah Goins and Zach Turnure—members of the OSU football team. Before the weekend came to a close, the Buckeyes made an offer to one of the best defenseman in the 2020 recruiting cycle.

Looking for No. 1 in 2020

Cornerback Sheridan Jones (Virginia Beach, VA / Bishop Sullivan Catholic) was the one to pick up the coveted Scarlet and Gray offer. On Sunday, he made the accolade known via Twitter.

Blessed to receive another offer from THE Ohio State University ⭕⚪#GoBucks #BuckeyeNation pic.twitter.com/UCM0qV9Wri

— SHERIDAN JONES ‼️ (@SJones3_) August 13, 2017

While some recruiting services haven’t graded Jones, 247sports has. Already, 247sports has awarded Jones a four-star ranking and has deemed him the top cornerback in the 2020 recruiting class. With that grade, it shouldn’t be a surprise that other top programs across the country have locked-in on the Virginia Beach native.

Of the 12 offers Jones has assembled, Alabama, Georgia and Florida State are a few of the recent ones. In late February, the Crimson Tide offer was given on the same day Jones attended a camp in Tuscaloosa, Ala., according to 247sports. Jones’ 247sports profile page also notes the Georgia offer occurred on March 25 and the FSU offer arrived on May 12.

Other notable offers Jones has secured include Florida, LSU, Tennessee, Virginia Tech and Auburn. With plenty of time before Jones makes the decision on where he will attend college, expect more offers to pour in—and expect the Buckeyes to make a run at getting the Virginia native to Columbus, Ohio.

As of Monday, the Buckeyes have only offered one other CB in the 2020 class: four-star Dwight McGlothern. Both Jones and McGlothern sit at four-star ratings, but with the latest OSU offer coming in for Jones, expect the five-star rating to be rolled out at any given time.

Ohio native selects UNC for basketball

Pivoting to the hardwood, Chris Holtmann’s OSU basketball program got some recruiting news as their weekend was just beginning. 2019 point guard target Jeremiah Francis (Pickerington, OH / Pickerington Central) verbally committed to North Carolina on Friday.

TARHEELNATION
Blessed https://t.co/X9eNfvv6Bm?amp=1 pic.twitter.com/2LoidV4S6Q

— Jeremiah Francis (@JFrancis30_) August 11, 2017

Francis, a four-star, is graded as the best player in Ohio’s 2019 basketball class, according to 247sports. The Buckeyes were making a push to keep him within state lines, but a late push by the defending national champion Tar Heels was enough to sway the PG to Chapel Hill, N.C.

Just on Aug. 5, Francis had OSU in his top 10. Things seemed to bode well for Holtmann, as a 247sports article by Steve Helwagen noted that the new Buckeye coach made it a priority to get Francis to OSU. On top of that, Francis’ father was a captain at OSU. However, when UNC made Francis an offer on Aug. 2, things began to change in favor of Roy William’s program.

Judge Orders FAA to Review Airline Seat Spacing

"I'm sorry but sir, you can't fly on this plane."
I must have sat next to his female twin. Had the temerity to ask me to move my arm off the arm rest, then lifted her fat to rest on it and extend into my seat 6 inches. I'm not into fat shaming but goodness, someone that size should not be allowed to fly...for the safety of everyone...or should be forced to pay for two adjacent seats. This is not an equal rights issue.

Does J.T. Barrett have a future in the NFL?

The redshirt senior is looking to improve his draft stock this season.

It wasn’t so long ago that analysts and fans alike were praising J.T. Barrett as Ohio State’s next big thing at quarterback.

Filling in as a redshirt freshman for an injured Braxton Miller in 2014, Barrett – outside of his forgettable second start against Virginia Tech – tore through opposing defenses.

He scored major wins on the road over Penn State, Minnesota and Michigan State, finishing fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting.

Had the Texas native not suffered a broken ankle versus Michigan that season, this entire article likely doesn’t get written.

After Barrett was sidelined, Cardale Jones stepped i–

Eh, you know where this is going.

Cardale was hot and led OSU to a national championship victory. Tom Herman left and then Cardale was not.

He eventually was benched midway through the Buckeyes 2015 campaign for Barrett, who was solid for the remainder of the year.

And that’s how the rest of his career has been.

Solid.

Even as the stand-alone starter last season, Barrett was inconsistent and again saw his efficiency slip.

Sure, he didn’t get much help from his ineffective offense, not to mention OSU’s abysmal play-calling, but there were too many throws left on the field.

Having said all that, Barrett is still one of the winningest and productive quarterbacks the Buckeyes have ever had.

No. 16 has earned Big Ten Quarterback of the Year honors twice in the past three years and essentially guided OSU to two College Football Playoff appearances. He’s 26–4 as a starter, 10 victories away from tying Art Schlichter (1978–81) for the most wins in school history.

And with 100 career touchdowns to his name, Barrett is now just 22 touchdown passes shy of Drew Brees’ mark for most in a career in Big Ten history

Here’s a snapshot of Barrett’s career stats:

Barrett has a chance to cap off his historic career with what could be his best season to date thanks to a pair of new coaches, per Land of 10.

“Ohio State’s new offensive coordinator, Kevin Wilson, helped transform Sam Bradford into the No. 1 overall pick of the 2010 draft, and Nate Sudfeld into a sixth-round selection a year ago. Meanwhile, new quarterbacks coach Ryan Day arrived in Columbus after having spent three years as an assistant with the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers.”

Regardless of what is accomplished on the field in 2017, there’s one question that continues to be asked of Barrett.

Does he have a future in the NFL?

First, let’s take a look at what some draft pundits and analysts have said about it.

"I don’t see him as a starter. You just don’t see the arm strength, the accuracy hasn’t been there... You never want to rule anyone out, but I would say right now based off what I’ve seen, he looks more like a late-round kind of project than anything else."

-Matt Miller, Bleacher Report

"His temperament, his acumen, his ability to assess, his intangibles are off the charts. I think he's a little bit bigger than Russell Wilson, but I think he'll have a lot of that Russell Wilson feel about him."

-George Whitfield, quarterback guru

“In reality, Barrett has been a roller coaster since his redshirt freshman season under Tom Herman, and with a legitimate offensive coordinator back in the booth, Barrett could and should have a season reminiscent of his 2014 campaign.”

-Christopher Jason, LGHL

It’s safe to say that Barrett has a considerable amount riding on his final go as a Buckeye. He’ll either stand pat at as a noodle-armed leader that peaked years ago, or Barrett will disprove his critics and show he’s worth the price of admission on draft day.

I like his odds of rebounding in a big way this season.

On top of Wilson and Day’s overhaul of the offense, OSU welcomes back four returning starters on the offensive line. That includes Billy Price, a favorite to take home the Rimington Award as one of the nation's best centers.

After a year of nonstop criticism, the receiving corps appears to be back on track again with potential breakout stars Binjimen Victor and Terry McLaurin leading the way.

And with 1,000-yard rusher Mike Weber, J.K. Dobbins and Demario McCall heading up the backfield, expect the Buckeyes to put up big-time points in 2017.

It’s no accident that Joe Thomas Barrett IV is here.

OSU’s revamped offense isn’t the same without him under center. He’s been one of the faces of college football – literally – for awhile now and it’s because of his innate leadership qualities and quarterbacking ability.
