LGHL How will Kevin Wilson change Ohio State’s offense this season?

How will Kevin Wilson change Ohio State’s offense this season?

Wilson’s mix of tempo and standard sets differs from recent Buckeye offenses.

“While Wilson is used to calling plays at tempo and distributing widely, how will he do so with the zone/power-read schemes that have defined Ohio State?”

- Ian Boyd, SBNation

In this wonderfully data-rich article, Boyd outlines a pretty convincing case for how Wilson will change the Buckeyes’ offense from fairly focused on a small group of weapons to being able to utilize all of the immensely talented skill position players that Urban Meyer and company have recruited in recent years.

As Boyd lays out, one of the main differences between how OSU’s offense has looked under previous offensive coordinators and how Wilson’s offenses traditionally work is that at Northwestern, Oklahoma and Indiana, Wilson liked to have his teams line up in a small set of standard formations, and then run or pass based on what the defense did. Conversely, the Buckeyes have tended to change up their formations and groupings fairly regularly in an effort to keep the defense off balance.

Last year, Wilson’s strategy allowed a larger number of players to receive substantial targets and yardage at IU compared to OSU, especially in terms of wide receivers. Last season, H-back Curtis Samuel was OSU’s leading receiver with 97 targets for 865 yards. While IU’s Mitchell Paige had the same 97 targets, those only amounted for 646 yards. Ricky Jones, however, had 94 targets for 848 yards, and Nick Westbrook had 92 targets that collected 945 yards for the Hoosiers.

For the Buckeyes, the second and third receivers, Noah Brown and tight end Marcus Baugh, had 52 and 48 targets respectively, accounting for just 402 and 269 yards a piece.

The other main difference that Wilson is already bringing to the Buckeye offense is his version of playing with tempo. As Boyd points out, the fact that Ohio State has a talented, experienced offensive line should allow the offense to play at a rate that maximizes their playmakers’ skills.

The key, as Boyd suggests, is to how well the coordinator, Wilson, and head coach, Meyer, are able to marry their offensive philosophies.

“There's no such thing as fair in sports and this injury to Burrow will almost certainly give Haskins a chance to prove himself, but maybe that's ultimately just.”

- Patrick Murphy, BuckNuts

With the disappointing news coming out of the Woody Hayes Center this morning that backup quarterback Joe Burrow will be out indefinitely following surgery to repair a broken hand, the focus of what was a compelling battle behind for the spot behind J.T. Barrett turns squarely onto redshirt-freshman Dwayne Haskins.

While both QBs played well in April’s spring game, it looked fairly certain that Burrow had the upper-hand when it came to backing up the incumbent starter. That idea had been born out since the scrimmage inside The Shoe; while Meyer refused to name an official backup, word of Burrow’s strong grip of the offense seemed to give him the advantage.

However, now that Haskins will be QB2, at least to start the season, he will have the opportunity to catch up to, or even surpass, Burrow. However, as Burrow is expected to return at some point during this season, the unusual early season schedule might end up minimizing Haskins’ on-field ability to shine.

Opening up against a conference foe (Indiana), then playing a highly ranked opponent in Week 2 (Oklahoma), and then having a triple-option based service academy the following week (Army), could mean that Barrett will be seeing more playing time early in the season than OSU starters normally do.

“Now it’s (Parris) Campbell’s turn, and I think he’s ready. It doesn’t hurt that he’s spent the last couple years developing as a wide receiver, either.”

- Ryan Ginn, Land of 10

One of the biggest surprises to come out of Ohio State’s spring practices was that former wide receiver Parris Campbell had made the move to H-back. It seemed odd, especially given the success that Curtis Samuel had in the position as more of a run-first H-back. While Campbell has displayed occasional bursts during his OSU career, they have mostly been as a returner.

However, with Wilson’s high-tempo offense in place, and new co-coordinator and quarterback coach Ryan Day saying that Barrett will be looking to spread the field horizontally as much as vertically, he will need a reliable playmaker at the H-back position.

So, a lot of Ohio State’s offensive success could depend on how well Campbell acclimates to his new position. So, for everyone’s sake, I hope that Ginn is right that Campbell is the Buckeye on the brink of having an offensive breakout season.

It’s still unclear how much time the forward will be out.

The Ohio State basketball team may be without one of their rising stars, as sophomore forward Andre Wesson has spent the summer receiving treatment for a medical issue.

In an article by The Lantern, a spokesman for Ohio State said to the paper that “additional testing will be conducted in the coming weeks” and that the Buckeyes were hopeful that Wesson “will be able to continue his athletic career” this season.

Last season, Wesson appeared in 29 of OSU’s 32 games, and averaged 11.6 minutes per game. Additionally, Wesson shot 36.5 percent from the field and scored a total of 66 points in Thad Matta’s final season at the helm of Buckeye basketball.

Kaleb Wesson, Andre’s younger brother, is also a true freshman on the Ohio State basketball team. Here’s hoping to a speedy recovery for Andre.

Could a wider alignment and an inexperienced secondary mean more sacks in 2017?

With veterans Tyquan Lewis, Sam Hubbard, and Jalyn Holmes leading at end, and younger guys like Dre’Mont Jones, Nick Bosa, Jonathon Cooper, and Chase Young adding depth and playmaking ability, it’s easy to see why national writers expect Ohio State’s defensive line to be one of the country’s best in 2017.

But despite ranking 15th in overall run defense and first in stuff rate, the defensive line was only 58th in average sacks per game (2.15/game) and 78th in adjusted sack rate. There are any number of reasons for this — from the lack of an elite pass rusher to an intentional strategy designed around turnovers instead of sacks. According to Bruce Feldman, Greg Schiano implemented a drill called Match the Hand last year designed to block passing lanes and generate turnovers. From Sam Hubbard:

“We do it every day. That’s all I think about when I’m running to a quarterback and he’s rolling out. You don’t go for the hit — that’s what I used to do. You just match the hand. It works every time. I’ve talked to all the quarterbacks and they just say they hate it so much. After doing all these drills, it’s just instinct.”

Last year’s defense had the highest interception-to-sack ratio (.75) and the best defense of the Urban Meyer era (fifth in defensive S&P+).

But with the departure of three NFL Draft first-rounders, it looks like the defensive line is changing things up, which could mean more sacks are on the way for the 2017 defensive line.

According to the recent defensive line interviews from Cleveland.com:

“Coach Greg Schiano comes in and has a different philosophy,” Johnson said. “Last year we were more of a squeeze front, build a wall. This year we’re playing a little wider, allows us to get off the ball and play faster in the run and pass game.”

Then from Nick Bosa:

“Coach Fickell being a linebacker coach, we kinda set up all of the plays for the linebackers to make and now it’s us pinning our ears back and going, instead of sitting at the line and waiting,” Bosa said.

“It was definitely frustrating, being tight on the tackle. On first and second down it’s tough to get a pass rush because you’re so tight, anticipating the run.”

And in a separate article, Bosa’s comments suggest a more aggressive defense:

And a more aggressive defense, one Bosa said will allow the defensive line to "pin their ears back" more should open things up for a player who wants to get after quarterbacks the way his brother did.

Normally preseason player comments about the defense playing more aggressively are pretty meaningless, but the comments here are evidence for an actual tactical change, albeit a small one: the wider pre-snap alignment.

It’s possible that the defensive line’s mindset has changed now that the Buckeyes have to again replace 3⁄4 of the secondary. While Denzel Ward, Damon Arnette, Jordan Fuller, and Erick Smith all seem to be high-quality players, none seem to possess Malik Hooker’s elite athleticism and centerfield capabilities. The defensive line’s focus might have shifted slightly away from setting up interceptions and to getting after the quarterback.

So it will be worth following the interception-to-sack ratio again this season: if it falls (somewhere between .32-.56, where it was the previous two seasons), but the pass defense remains top-ten in the S&P+, then that might be evidence of a successful tactical shift from the Buckeyes’ defensive line given the secondary and line personnel in 2017.

This is just beautiful.

The rivalry between Ohio State and Michigan is so deeply ingrained in Buckeye Nation, that once former Buckeye players head to the NFL, they can have a tough time putting those feelings aside to work alongside one -- but they do.

That is, until it’s time for a little rookie hazing, by way of a haircut...

Former Ohio State tight end Jeff Heuerman had to welcome Michigan alum, rookie Jake Butt to the Denver Broncos this season, and didn’t let him get off too easily. Heuerman not only branded him with the Block ‘O’, but he also shaved in a reminder of his record against the Buckeyes, 0-4.

In the league, players don’t let a college rivalry keep them from being good teammates, but an innocent reminder every now and then isn’t a bad thing.

We can’t wait to see what Heuerman and Butt wager on The Game this year!

usa_today_10013448.0.jpg

Few conferences sport better talent than the B1G.

The Big Ten returns this year as one of college football’s premier conferences. It’s stock full of some of the most talented players in the country, not to mention future NFL stars.

Last season saw the likes of Desmond King, Jabrill Peppers, and Malik Hooker – just to name a few – dominate the Big Ten and become faces of the sport.

As the 2017 season inches closer, we attempted to make sense of all the talent the conference has to offer.

You’ll probably disagree with at least a couple picks (or their placement), but here are our top 10 players in the Big Ten.

No. 1: Saquon Barkley

The best player in the conference is undoubtedly Penn State’s Saquon Barkley. Coming off of a season that saw him explode for 1,898 total yards and 22 touchdowns, Barkley is back as the leader of the upstart Nittany Lions.

He played like a #1 draft pick RT Saquon Barkley out here just playing with the USC defense pic.twitter.com/K4hDcq9FwH

— THUNDA (@mbgxxx) January 3, 2017

With a potential first-round pick again lining up in the backfield, Penn State remains firmly in the hunt for another Big Ten title.

No. 2: J.T. Barrett

Ohio State’s most valuable player and longtime starter, J.T. Barrett returns as the face of the Buckeyes. He’s 26-4 under center and is primed to cap off his historic career with what might be his best season to date.

The Scarlet and Gray go as Barrett goes, which could spell great things for OSU this year.

No. 3: Trace McSorley

The second Nittany Lion on this list, quarterback Trace McSorley has become a household name in college football. He’s the best pure passer in the Big Ten and proved as much last season, throwing for 3,614 yards and 29 touchdowns with just eight interceptions.

What’s more, McSorley scored big wins over Minnesota, OSU, and conference title runner-up Wisconsin. Look for him to build off his breakout year with another strong outing as a junior.

No. 4: Josey Jewell

He doesn’t get much praise nationally, but Iowa’s Josey Jewell has been as good as a defender as you’ll find in the conference. Jewell led the Hawkeyes with 124 tackles and could top those numbers with a productive 2017 season. Expect more acclaim to head his way this year.

No. 5: Justin Jackson

If Barkley is the best running back in the Big Ten, then a close second resides at Northwestern.

Justin Jackson has more than 900 carries to his name and continued his collegiate dominance in 2016 with 1,743 total yards and 15 touchdowns.

A fourth-straight 1,000-yard campaign is a near certainty at this point.

No. 6: Tegray Scales

Like Jewell, Tegray Scales gets little in the way attention. The conference leader in both total tackles (125) and tackles for loss (24), Scales broke out for the Hoosiers in 2016 and cemented his status as an elite linebacker in the Big Ten.

Few can match Scales production and motor, which will be on full display when Indiana hosts OSU opening week under the lights.

No. 7: Jerome Baker

After enjoying a stellar breakout season, Jerome Baker is back for more as not only a junior, but as one of the Buckeyes top defenders. He finished second on the team in tackles (83) and flashed the potential to be something really special come Week One.

No. 8: Mike Weber

The latest in a long line of productive Buckeye tailbacks, Mike Weber is set to be the stand-alone workhorse for the team in 2017. That means big numbers for Weber, who became just the third OSU freshman back to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark last season.

With four returning offensive linemen and a retooled passing game, Weber should feast on the Big Ten.

No. 9: Mike Gesicki

Along with McSorley, tight end Mike Gesicki is another guy that came out of nowhere only to become a key contributor on the defending conference champs.

He was as sure-handed as they come and set school records for tight end receptions (48) and receiving yards (679). Plan on more of the same from Gesicki this year.

No. 10: Tyquan Lewis

The 2017 Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year is looking to go out on top as a senior after recording eight sacks and three forced fumbles last season. Having already proven to be more than a product of Joey Bosa’s success, Tyquan Lewis can put his stamp on the Buckeyes hallowed program.

Honorable Mention: Nick Westbrook (WR, Indiana) Rodney Smith (RB, Minnesota), Rashan Gary (DL, Michigan), Maurice Hurst (DL, Michigan), Sam Hubbard (DL, OSU), Billy Price (OL, OSU), Akrum Wadley (RB, Iowa), Troy Fumagalli (TE, Wisconsin), T.J. Edwards (LB, Wisconsin), LJ Scott (RB, Michigan State)

The QB competition just got a little lighter.

Ohio State is down a quarterback before the 2017 season even kicks off. Sophomore QB Joe Burrow is out indefinitely after undergoing hand surgery on Tuesday. The young Buckeye broke a bone in his throwing hand on Monday during practice, but might be able to make it back to the field by midseason.

Burrow was in competition with Dwayne Haskins for the No. 2 spot on the roster, but this will solidify the job for Haskins. Both had performed really well during this year’s Spring Game and throughout training camp. Behind Haskins now will be incoming freshman Tate Martell.

This isn’t the first time Ohio State has been down a QB just before the season opener, but Burrow should have plenty of time to recover and then work his way back into the depth chart.

The Buckeyes kick-off their season in just over a week on the road in Indiana.

247sports issued elite TE Ruckert the highest star rating available.

247sports issues TE Ruckert a 5-star rating

On Monday, Rivals released an updated ranking list for the class of 2018 prospects. On that list, tight end Jeremy Ruckert (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) showed up as a four-star TE, and was ranked No. 83 overall.

On Tuesday, 247sports did a reevaluation of the prospect, and good news came in: Ruckert was awarded a five-star rating. Even better, Ruckert made a significant climb up the overall board of 2018 prospects. Before, the Lindenhurst native was No. 35 on the big board of prospects; now, he sits at No. 11—and is considered the best TE, and best prospect in the state of New York. Additionally, the 247sports composite, an aggregation of all the recruiting grades, has Ruckert as a five-star product.

So, it appears that Ruckert is the real deal.

Ruckert wasn’t just given the five-star rating, though. He went out an earned it. Earlier in the summer at Nike’s The Opening camp, Ruckert went out and showed that he was the best TE in ‘18.

Plenty of high-profile schools were in pursuit of Ruckert before he verbally committed to Ohio State on July 17. In fact, 29 schools made an offer to the TE, including the likes of Alabama, Florida, Florida State, and Michigan.

4-star PG takes visit to Ohio State

Transitioning to the basketball recruiting circuit, it was a big Tuesday for Chris Holtmann and the Buckeye basketball team. OSU played host to four-star point guard Noah Locke (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh School).

Locke is using one of his five allotted visits on the Buckeyes, and according to Adam Jardy of The Columbus Dispatch, Holtmann’s squad edged the basketball powerhouse Kansas for the last visit spot.

Below is the visit schedule for Locke:

There is stiff competition for the Owings Mills, Md. prospect. Fellow Big Ten foe Michigan, SEC power Florida, and Xavier, who made a deep run in the NCAA Tournament, are in the mix.

The 247sports Crystal Ball predictions are fuzzy with Locke. Forty percent have him going to Kansas, but since the Jayhawks didn’t make the final visit list, their chances of getting Locke take a hit. Providence and Michigan both split 20 percent of the votes in the Crystal Ball. Granted, there were a total of five votes, but the votes make sense— UM and Providence got visits with Locke.

However, the wildcard here seems to be Ohio State. Holtmann’s squad issued an offer to Locke back on July 24, and shortly thereafter, Locke included OSU on his shortlist. If the Buckeyes were going to make a move and gain even more rapport, this visit will be their best shot. A good visit may very well steer Locke in the direction of Columbus, Ohio for his collegiate career.
