Technology In The NFL

How fast? How far? Chips inside the NFL’s new footballs track every last stat

811d9ab4e88da3641256c9d3d9398d60

Are you ready for some football … tracking? The NFL has placed coin-sized radio-frequency identification (RFID) chips from Zebra Technologies inside footballs for every game this season to provide a deeper dive into statistics, information the league has never effectively captured. The advanced stats the NFL will collect from players and footballs could be used in fantasy football — but the NFL tracking footballs might not be as dramatic as some might hope.

The RFID chips in the footballs will track data such as velocity, rotation, ball speed, and location. Traditionally, an 80-yard pass attributed to a quarterback could have resulted from a 10-yard pass followed by 70 yards of running after the catch by the receiver. With chips in footballs, the NFL can more accurately track how many yards the ball was thrown before it was caught. The days of Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton’s stats hiding behind his star wide receiver A.J. Green’s elite speed could be numbered.
.
.
.
For the past three years, Zebra has placed its chips on players’ shoulder pads, on referees, and on first-down measuring sticks to cull information for the league’s Next Gen Stats initiative, which was started in 2013 to deliver more in-depth stats. When Adrian Peterson rushed for an 80-yard touchdown against the Oakland Raiders in 2015, Zebra’s chips in his shoulder pads revealed what his max speed was during the run. While these chips have been used to produce highly detailed and stylized highlight reels, they have mostly helped the NFL in ways the average fan would not think twice about.

The contest between the Horned Frogs and Cowboys is just one of two this weekend between ranked teams.

Last week ATS: 8-7 (1-4 National, 7-3 B1G)

Season ATS: 26-24-1 (7-8 National, 19-16-1 B1G)

Last week was pretty much the inverse of the prior week. Last week I was terrible at picking the national games, while I excelled with most of the Big Ten games. One of these weeks I’ll put everything together for a complete week. Now whether that week will be completely great or completely awful still remains to be seen.

National games:

N.C. State v. No. 12 Florida State (-13) - 12 PM EST - ABC/ESPN2

It feels like it has been years since Florida State has last been on the field thanks to Hurricane Irma. Not only did the Seminoles game against Louisiana-Monroe from two weeks ago get cancelled, but last week’s rivalry battle with Miami was pushed back to later in the season.

Luckily for Florida State they have had some extra time to prepare for spending the rest of the season without Deondre Francois, who was injured in the loss to Florida State. True freshman quarterback James Blackman will assume the responsibilities behind center for the Seminoles.

North Carolina State doesn’t nearly have the issues at quarterback that Florida State does, with Ryan Finley having a firm hold on the job. Finley has thrown 192 passes without tossing an interception, which is the longest active streak in the country. H-back Jaylen Saunders is Finley’s most trusted playmaker, with the senior already having five touchdowns on the season, three of them on the ground and two of them through the air.

The battle between Saunders and Derwin James will be worth the price of admission itself. Who knows if Florida State will be rusty after all the time off or fresh and ready to go. Maybe three weeks is the perfect amount of time before getting back on the field after playing Alabama. Florida State wins at home, but they certainly don’t cover the spread.

Florida State 27, N.C. State 24

No. 1 Alabama (-19.5) v. Vanderbilt - 3:30 PM EST - CBS

Alabama just keeps rolling along. Last week the Crimson Tide beat Colorado State 41-23, but in all honesty it wasn’t that close, as a couple of touchdowns later in the game by the Rams made the score look closer than it actually was. Now Alabama makes their first trip to Vanderbilt since 2007 to open up their SEC schedule.

Vanderbilt is coming off an upset win over Kansas State, and now they are looking to make it two straight wins against ranked foes. The Commodores rely on a stout defense, but they do have solid quarterback in Kyle Shurmur, who has thrown for eight touchdowns already this year.

At first I was thinking there was no way I was going to lay the points in this matchup, but the more I thought about it, the better Alabama is looking. Shurmur is a good quarterback, but he’ll get nothing against the Crimson Tide defense. Sabanbot 3000 can’t be happy Alabama gave up nearly 400 yards to Colorado State, and Alabama responds with a blowout win in Nashville.

Alabama 37, Vanderbilt 10

No. 5 USC (-16.5) v. California - 3:30 PM EST - ABC

Will USC decide which team they are actually going to have show up the rest of the season because they aren’t helping my picks record so far this year. I expected the Trojans to have problems with Stanford two weeks ago, and last week to have little trouble with Texas. Obviously those picks were way off.

Sam Darnold has been sharp at times, but also has thrown two interceptions in each of USC’s first three games this year. Those mistakes might not fly against a California team who is noticeably improved under new head coach Justin Wilcox, who served as defensive coordinator at USC in 2014 and 2015.

It’s hard to believe we might be wondering if Cal has enough offense to keep pace here, but Wilcox has already flipped the culture in Berkeley. Not only is USC coming off a tough game against Texas, but next week they play Washington State in Pullman on Friday. The Trojans win, but they don’t put together all that impressive of a performance in victory.

USC 33, California 23

No. 16 TCU v. No. 6 Oklahoma State (-14) - 3:30 PM EST - ESPN

The last few years I have really hated on Oklahoma State, mostly because I thought their teams were overrated. I’m definitely changing my tune this year. The Cowboys are for real, and if you need anymore evidence that they are, just watch last week’s first half against Pitt.

Mason Rudolph has himself firmly in the Heisman Trophy race through three games, throwing for over 1,100 yards and 11 touchdowns despite getting a bunch of time off in the second half of those games after building some big leads. The Cowboys are averaging 54 points per game this year, which is fourth in the country.

TCU won a couple weeks ago against Arkansas, but what else really have they done this year? Sure the 20-point win over SMU was nice last week, but Oklahoma State isn’t SMU. After two weeks on the road, Oklahoma State returns home and continues their impressive start to the season with a convincing win over Kenny Hill and the Horned Frogs.

Oklahoma State 48, TCU 24

No. 17 Mississippi State v. No. 11 Georgia (-11) - 7:00 PM EST - ESPN

Mississippi State might have pulled off the shocker of last week’s college football action with their destruction of LSU. How good is LSU really though? Quarterback Nick Fitzgerald accounted for four touchdowns in the win over the Tigers, but I’m not convinced he can do it two weeks in a row, especially on the road against a very tough Georgia defense.

Georgia has been able to navigate some injuries so far this year, and now will be looking to win their SEC opener. Sony Michel was held out of last week’s game with an ankle injury he suffered against Notre Dame, and quarterback Jacob Eason is back practicing after getting injured in the season opener against Appalachian State. Georgia has trips to Tennessee and Vanderbilt on tap after this week’s game, which makes earn a win to start off conference play even more important.

I trust this Georgia team a little more than I trust Mississippi State. While Dan Mullen’s squad has the edge at quarterback, I can see Georgia shutting down Fitzgerald and leaving Mississippi State searching for answers more than I can see Mississippi State putting together another convincing win against an SEC foe for the second straight week.

Georgia 23, Mississippi State 14

Our latest podcast breaks down Dobbins’ ridiculous start, and previews UNLV.

It’s been quite the month for Ohio State running back J.K. Dobbins. After breaking the school record for yards rushing in a single game by a freshman —in his first career game, no less— Dobbins posted strong performances against both Oklahoma and Army, and has already earned The Big Ten Conference Player of the Week award twice.

Despite having only 55 carries, Dobbins ranks 8th nationally in yards rushing through three games. Add in Mike Weber Jr.’s current injury situation, and Dobbins stands to see even more action going forward. If he keeps it up, how long will it take him to vault near the top of the Heisman Trophy conversation?

On this episode of the Hangout in the Holy Land, Matt Brown and Colton Denning assess what it will take for Dobbins to become a major factor in the Heisman race, and preview everything about this week’s game versus UNLV, including:

  • Previewing UNLV’s explosive running game, and why the linebackers —including Tuf Borland-- will take center stage in stopping it.
  • Getting used to Ohio State’s offense relying heavily on run/pass options
  • The benefits of using those RPO’s for J.T. Barrett and his receivers.
  • The importance of getting Dobbins the ball early.
  • Why the Buckeyes should win by 30 points, and more.

The guys also wonder what it will take for Mike Riley to be fired at Nebraska, take a look at the most important games going on around college football, and give their predictions.

It's starting to feel like a good time to be a Buckeye basketball fan.

Ohio State basketball Head Coach Chris Holtmann had a big Tuesday on the recruiting trail with a major addition to the program. Yesterday, he hoped to follow it up with yet another big pickup for the Scarlet and Gray, and that mission was a success.

Washington gives pledge to Buckeyes

On Tuesday, the addition of ‘18 SF Jaedon LeDee of The Kinkaid School (TX) came about. LeDee is a four-star prospect that falls just outside of the Top 100 in the 247 Sports Composite rankings.

On Wednesday, things only got better, as it was ‘18 PG Duane Washington of Sierra Canyon (CA) who gave his pledge to the Ohio State coaching staff.

❗❗❗pic.twitter.com/FoioLztRKY

— Duane Washington Jr. (@TheDuaneWash) September 20, 2017

Washington, a three-star prospect, was primarily recruited by the Buckeyes' new assistant coach Ryan Pedon. The 6'3, 190-pounder ultimately chose Ohio State over the other 29 offers he had received in his recruitment, including programs such as Cincinnati, Iowa State, Michigan, Missouri, Oregon, SMU, Virginia Tech, UCLA, and more.

The pickup of Washington, who now joins the aforementioned LeDee as the only two commits in the class, puts the Buckeyes at 32nd in the 247Sports Composite Team Rankings and as the tenth-best class in the Big Ten conference.

While that may not seem great, it is worth mentioning that Ohio State does have a couple of spots left in this year's recruiting cycle. Depending on who joins LeDee and Washington in the class, it would not be surprising if the Scarlet and Gray stormed past Iowa, Northwestern, Purdue, and Rutgers and began flirting with a top-five ranking within the conference.

Jones gets UA All-American threads

Switching gears to the gridiron: ‘18 QB Emory Jones of Heard County (GA), who has been committed to Ohio State for a little over a year, also had himself a special day on Wednesday.

That’s because Jones, a four-star standout and Top 50 prospect nationally, received his Under Armour All-American game jersey at his ceremony at his high school in Franklin, Georgia.

It's a blessing #UAAllAmerican pic.twitter.com/HHJojPyccu

— Emory Jones (@eXjones6) September 20, 2017

That’s the annual all-star game shown by ESPN that features many of the nation's top talents. From an Ohio State perspective, cornerback Sevyn Banks of Florida, defensive end Brenton Cox of Georgia, offensive guard Matthew Jones of New York, and running back Brian Snead of Florida are other 2018 Buckeye commitments that are planning to participate in the event.

In past years, the event featured Ohio State players like Marcus Baugh, Vonn Bell, Nick and Joey Bosa, Gareon Conley, Jashon Cornell, Trevon Grimes, Dwayne Haskins, Jamarco Jones, Jalin Marshall, Raekwon McMillan, and many more.

What does Ohio State’s second commit of the week bring to Columbus?

There had been rumblings, albeit quiet rumblings, but rumblings nonetheless in small groups of Ohio State fans over the past few months. When head coach Chris Holtmann was hired as Thad Matta’s successor, the overwhelming consensus was that it would take some time for the former Butler head coach to build some momentum. Despite that thought process, there were still contingents of Buckeyes that have been growing more and more irritated with the lack of action in recruiting under Holtmann thus far.

If those doubts weren’t erased yesterday when the Buckeyes landed 4-star forward Jaedon LeDee (here’s what he brings to the table) over Texas A&M and UCLA, a second commitment, just minutes ago from California point guard Duane Washington Jr. should silence that doubt.

Washington picked up an offer from Ohio State back on August 20th, and exactly one month later, he’s officially the second member of the 2018 class. Washington, the 252nd best player in the 2018 class according to 247sports, was on campus last weekend, for a visit that obviously went very well. Here’s what the Chatsworth product brings to Columbus.

ON THE COURT

When it comes to Washington’s play on the court, it’s hard to pin down exactly where he’ll play in terms of position at the next level. He’s serviceable off the dribble-drive thanks to solid handles and quickness, though he’s not the kind of athlete that a guard like Dennis Smith Jr. is.

He’s a capable passer, and can run an offense, though I don’t think he’s at his most comfortable facilitating. That’s where the intrigue lies. What he lacks in true point guard skills, he makes up for with a silky smooth, elite jump shot.

He’s a great shooter from deep and mid-range, both off the dribble or the pass, and can do some serious damage if given any kind of space. The best way to quantify a position for Washington is by calling him a combo guard with point guard capabilities if needed, and a dangerous jumper; also known as exactly what Ohio State. needs.

IN THE CLASS

Washington joins LeDee as the second member of Ohio State’s 2018 class, a class that now sits at 32nd in the nation, and will only improve thanks to its large number of open scholarships. Ohio State is still looking to add a number of other recruits, including fellow guards Eric Ayala, Luther Muhammad, Noah Locke, and Elijah Weaver. If Ohio State gets their guys, by the time this class is complete it will be in the top ten, perhaps even top five.

Washington picked Ohio State over UCLA, Michigan, Oregon, and Nebraska. Washington held 30 offers in total, including one from Chris Holtmann when he was at Butler. As Ohio State gains momentum under Holtmann, the Buckeyes will continue winning recruiting battles, like LeDee over A&M, or now, Washington over UCLA. It’s a good time to be a Buckeye basketball fan, as more recruiting victories are coming, sooner rather than later.
