LGHL Urban Meyer calls Ohio State’s play-calling ‘excellent’

The Buckeye head coach is happy with the offense’s progress and sees a lot of potential.

"I feel the communication, the play-calling is excellent right now and the development of players. We'll see if we're having this conversation in a few weeks, and if we are, that means we're a legitimate top offense."

-Urban Meyer via Mitch Stacy, The Associated Press via NCAA.com

Quarterback J.T. Barrett may still be the same guy that he was at the start of the season, but to say that there hasn’t been any change to how he’s running the offense would be inaccurate. Granted, some of the fifth-year senior’s success comes against some of the weakest teams on OSU’s schedule, but Barrett’s weeks of trusting his receivers, patience in the pocket, and finding success both through the air and on the ground is nothing to scoff about.

Meyer and his staff know that they are heading into the toughest stretch of their schedule and will need to see similar results to the past few weeks, but this time, against much more competent competition. Having multiple targets instead of a sole leading receiver may hurt individual stat lines, but ultimately gives the Buckeyes a better shot of maintaining their current production and momentum against most dominant defenses -- like Penn State and Michigan.

The Ohio State coaching staff may be on the recruiting trail during the bye week, but the rest of the Buckeyes are trying to get some much deserved rest and time to rehabilitate. Several players fighting off injuries, including Jamarco Jones, Jaylyn Holmes and Mike Weber should benefit from the week off before they host Penn State.

“Purdue was a very good team then. They came out and exposed every weakness we had. Very well-coached that day. They played something called zero hole, which means you basically can't throw it.”

-Urban Meyer via Doug Lesmerises, cleveland.com

As we head into the first weekend void of Ohio State football since the onset of the season, the fine folks over at cleveland.com took a walk down memory lane back to 2012, to the time the Buckeyes snagged an overtime win against Purdue in Meyer’s first season in Columbus.

Buckeye reporter Doug Lesmerises spoke to some of the key players in that 2012 near-upset game, including (personal favorite) Kenny Guiton, Zach Boren, Chris Fields, Jeff Heuerman, Jack Mewhort, and Evan Spencer. They reminisced about the intensity of the game heading into overtime and what the win meant for the team and the season -- and the precedent it set for the Meyer era in Columbus.

It’s not often that Purdue wreaks havoc against the Buckeyes, but the game in 2012 wasn’t the first time and most likely — especially with the resurgence of the Boilermakers in 2017 — won’t be the last. Spencer pointed out that the team was “playing like crap” for lack of a better term before ultimately kicking it into gear mid-way through the third quarter.

Hopefully, the Buckeyes won’t need this same type of late-game comeback throughout the rest of the 2017 season, but it’s fun to look back and remember those important moments for Ohio State football.

“Crew SC supporters groups acted swiftly and organized a rally on Sunday Oct. 22 at the Columbus Commons in downtown Columbus. However, due to overwhelming support, the supporters groups announced a change in venue for the Sunday rally as they would relocate to Columbus City Hall.”

-Ralph Schude, Massive Report

For Columbus soccer fans, this has been a tough week. It was announced a few days ago that the owner of the Columbus Crew (Anthony Precourt) was looking to move the team to Austin, TX.

While Precourt claims the team is hurting without a publicly funded new stadium downtown, many are seeing his purchase of the Crew and subsequent move as a way to avoid paying the league's $150 million expansion fee

It was not only a shock to Columbus fans, but to the larger Major League Soccer community who began rallying around supporters of one of the league's charter clubs by changing their Twitter logos and colors. The owners still have to vote on whether or not Precourt will be allowed to move the team, but other team supporters are concerned that this would set a poor precedent for the sport.

Never one to take something sitting down, Crew faithful in Columbus have set up a rally on Sunday at the City Hall to show their fervent opposition to the move. Precourt isn’t helping matters, and keeps digging his grave deeper, and deeper.

Put you all in, not us

Before Penn State heads to Columbus next week, the Nittany Lions host Michigan under the lights.

Last week ATS: 5-6-1 (2-4 National, 3-2-1 B1G)

Season ATS: 52-44-2 (20-17 National, 32-27-2 B1G)

Big Ten picks not enough for you? Find picks for five of Saturday’s most intriguing national games here.

B1G games:

Maryland v. No. 5 Wisconsin (-24) - 12:00 PM EST - FOX

Last week Wisconsin jumped out to a 17-3 lead in the second quarter over Purdue, but then everything went stagnant for the Badgers, who didn’t score the rest of the way in the 17-9 win. Jonathan Taylor recorded his second straight game with over 200 yards rushing, finishing with 219 yards against the Boilermakers.

The good news for Maryland is that they didn’t have any quarterbacks get injured last week. Max Bortenschlager didn’t play bad, especially for someone who came into the season as the third string quarterback, but he’s just not as dynamic as Tyrrell Pigrome or even Kasim Hill.

Saturday likely won’t be very fun for Bortenschlager and the rest of the Maryland offense, as they’ll be going up against a Wisconsin defense that has only give up more than 20 points once this season. Taylor eclipses 1,000 rushing yards for the season as the Badgers have little trouble with the Terrapins.

Wisconsin 51, Maryland 17

Iowa (-1.5) v. Northwestern - 12:00 PM EST - ESPN2

While both teams were able to snap two-game losing streaks last time out, Iowa comes into this week’s game coming off a bye week. The Hawkeyes struggled a bit early against Illinois two weeks ago, before pulling away from the Fighting Illini with a 21-point fourth quarter.

After losing to Wisconsin and Penn State, Northwestern regained a little confidence last week against Maryland. Justin Jackson put together his best game of the season, rushing for 171 yards and two touchdowns against the Terrapins.

Nathan Stanley has put together a fine season, throwing for 15 touchdowns and just two interceptions, and he should have another strong game on Saturday. The combination of Stanley and Akrum Wadley will win out over Northwestern’s combination of Clayton Thorson and Jackson.

Iowa 30, Northwestern 20

Purdue (-9.5) v. Rutgers - 12:00 PM EST - Big Ten Network

Rutgers got a Big Ten win! I don’t know if you can call it a whole win since it only came against Illinois, but at least something good happened for Chris Ash. The former Ohio State co-defensive coordinator better savor the win though, because it’s hard to see any more coming this year.

Purdue at least kept things close against Wisconsin last week, creating three turnovers and blocking a punt. Other than that there wasn’t much to compliment the Boilermakers on. Even with the loss, it’s easy to tell Purdue is on the right track under Jeff Brohm.

It looks like Elijah Sindelar has gotten the keys at quarterback for the Boilermakers, and I think he’ll be able to gain some confidence against the Scarlet Knights. Even though Rutgers has played better defense this year, Brohm puts together a game plan that earns the Boilers a double-digit win.

Purdue 34, Rutgers 21

Indiana v. No. 18 Michigan State (-7) - 3:30 PM EST - ABC

Well this game just got a lot more interesting to try and predict. L.J. Scott looked like he had turned his season around last week with 194 yards rushing and two touchdowns in a 30-27 Michigan State win at Minnesota. Then yesterday it was announced Scott had been arrested for driving with a suspended license, his seventh driving charge in less than two years. If Scott is disciplined by Mark Dantonio, it will leave quarterback Brian Lewerke as the team’s active leading rusher this season.

Indiana has to be gutted after last week’s game against Michigan. The Hoosiers headed to overtime with a shot at snapping a 21-game losing streak to the Wolverines, but Karan Higdon’s touchdown run on the first play of overtime was the difference. At least Tom Allen learned the toughness of quarterback Peyton Ramsey in the loss, as the redshirt freshman hung in there despite taking a lot of punishment from a tough Michigan defense.

Last year in Bloomington, the Hoosiers snapped a seven-game losing streak against the Spartans with a 24-21 overtime win. I think the Spartans gut out a win, but Indiana’s defense keeps things close until the end.

Michigan State 23, Indiana 20

Illinois v. Minnesota (-14) - 3:30 PM EST - Big Ten Network

At this point it doesn’t really matter what the spread is, just pick against Illinois. I feel like we think we know how bad the Fighting Illini are, but in reality they are much worse because our brains aren’t that twisted.

Minnesota really needs a win here if they want to keep their hopes of bowl eligibility alive. With road contests at Iowa, Michigan, and Northwestern, along with home games against Nebraska and Wisconsin, it’s hard to find three wins if the Golden Gophers don’t beat Illinois on Saturday. Minnesota has little trouble with a putrid Illinois team, and snaps a three-game losing streak.

Minnesota 34, Illinois 10

No. 19 Michigan v. No. 2 Penn State (-10) - 7:30 PM EST - ABC

Penn State has revenge on their mind after losing to Michigan 49-10 in Ann Arbor last year. All the Nittany Lions have done since losing to the Wolverines is win 15 out of 16 games, with the only loss during that span coming to USC in the Rose Bowl.

After having their bye week last week, there’s no doubt Penn State will be fresh coming into Saturday night’s game in Happy Valley. Saquon Barkley is in the thick of the Heisman Trophy race, and a big performance against the Wolverines in primetime would boost the junior running back’s case for the golden stiff arm.

Barkley will have his work cut out for him against Michigan’s defense, which is giving up just 223 yards of offense to opponents per game. If it wasn’t for the Wolverine defense, who knows what sort of trouble Michigan might be in right now, because their offense has done next to nothing since Wilton Speight went down with an injury.

The lone bright spot for Michigan on offense lately has been the running game. Last week Karan Higdon set a career high with 200 yards and three touchdowns in the overtime win at Indiana. If Michigan can get Higdon and Ty Issac going against the Nittany Lions, it will take a lot of pressure off of quarterback John O’Korn.

Taking Penn State seems a little too easy here. In Michigan’s four losses since the start of the 2016 season, they have been a combined nine points. Michigan will force Trace McSorley into a couple turnovers to help keep things close. The Nittany Lions win, but I don’t think they’ll do so by double-digits.

Penn State 27, Michig

Holy Stat! Seven surprising Buckeye stats after 7 games

Try and picture the conversation. It’s late August and your friend is confident that a true freshman OSU running back is going to have more rushing yards than Mike Weber midway through the season. (Riiight.) But they’re just getting started. Next, your friend plays the trump card — they are confident that this freshman will actually have more yards on the ground than the great Saquon Barkley at Penn State. (More than Saquon Barkley? Good luck with your life, you’ll get far with this kind of creative thinking.)

What’s that you say? J.K. Dobbins has actually done just that through seven games? Huh. A lot can change from August to October.

Seasons always play out in unexpected ways. And sometimes the most interesting stories are buried in the statistics. Seven games in gives us a good sample size to reflect on notable and surprising trends that have emerged so far for the Buckeyes. Let’s take a look at some those nuggets buried in the numbers.

J.K. Dobbins is the second leading rusher in the Big Ten: Dobbins only trails Wisconsin’s Jonathan Taylor in rushing yards in the Big Ten. Taylor has 986 yards, 10 touchdowns, and is averaging 7.8 yards per carry. Dobbins has 775 yards, 5 touchdowns also on 7.8 yards per rush. Meanwhile, Heisman Trophy frontrunner Saquon Barkley sits at No. 3 in the B1G with 649 yards, averaging 6.4 yards per rush and 6 rushing touchdowns.

The Buckeyes are on pace to be flagged for more penalties than any previous OSU team under Urban Meyer: The Buckeyes are at the wrong end of the national rankings in the fewest penalties category. OSU has has already been flagged for 52 penalties — 116th worst in the nation. Seven games into the season, Ohio State is averaging 7.4 penalties per game, and 74.4 penalty yards. The most OSU has previously been penalized under Urban Meyer was during the 2012 season. In 2012, the Buckeyes were called for 7 penalties a game and 64.5 penalty yards per contest.

J.T. Barrett leads the nation in passing touchdowns: Barrett’s 21 passing touchdowns is tied with West Virginia’s Will Grier for tops in the country.

Ohio State has given up zero yards on punt returns: First reported on Cleveland.com, Ohio State has punted 20 times and still not allowed a single punt return yard. OSU punter Drue Chrisman is averaging 42.6 yards on his punts, and the Buckeyes rank 16th best in the country in net punting.

No one is scoring more points in the country than J.T. Barrett: Barrett leads the nation in points responsible for with 158 points scored this season (21 passing TDs, 5 rushing TDs and one two point conversion). Louisville’s Lamar Jackson sits at No. 2 nationally, responsible for 156 points.

Since 2014, no Ohio State receiver has ranked in the top 50 nationally in receiving yards to end the season. That trend continues. While the Buckeyes are scoring passing touchdowns galore, it’s been from a lot of smaller contributions rather than a single standout playmaker. No OSU receiver ranks in the top 75 in the country in terms of receiving yards. Parris Campbell leads the Buckeyes with 405 yards receiving — 77th best in the nation. Johnnie Dixon’s 276 yards and K.J. Hill’s 274 yards rank 188th and 189th in the nation, respectively. Devin Smith was the last OSU receiver to finish the season ranked in the top 50 nationally in receiving yards, racking up 931 yards in 2014.

The offense is keeping the chains moving better than any team in the country: The Buckeyes have registered a best-in-the-nation 209 first downs on the season (100 rushing, 94 passing, and 15 on penalties). OSU has 15 more first downs than Louisville, which ranks No. 2 nationally.

New bowl projections point to Ohio State in the College Football Playoff

Oklahoma, Georgia and Penn State, those are some of the teams the Buckeyes could be running up against in the latest edition of bowl projections.

With the Ohio State Buckeyes rolling right into their bye week, they get to watch the chaos happen around them as Penn State-Michigan headline this week’s slate of games.

Last week, four upsets happened in the AP Poll Top 10. Those upsets drastically changed the bowl/playoff projections—as Ohio State was considered an outsider in most of the predictions heading into Week 7.

Now, with a fresh batch of predictions laid out, the Buckeyes are firmly in the playoff picture once again. Let’s take a look at where five different outlets (and their writers) have Ohio State headed to in the postseason.

The regular season meeting hasn’t even happened yet, but Jerry Palm of CBS Sports has a Buckeye-Nittany Lion rematch. This scenario means that the Bucks toppled PSU at home on Oct. 28. While that would be very good, that means Penn State will be angry in the grudge match in Pasadena, Calif. I don’t like the idea of facing Saquon Barkley once, but having to face him twice(!!!), I’m not too big on that notion.

As an FYI: In the other semifinal, Palm has Alabama-Clemson in the Sugar Bowl, which would make for an absolutely smashing third leg of the trilogy between those two teams.

Instead of Penn State, Jason Kirk has the Oklahoma Sooners playing in the Rose Bowl against Ohio State.

Like Palm, Kirk has the Buckeyes as the second best team at the end of the season—and he also Bama-Clemson in the other semifinal at the Sugar Bowl.

If this is what we end up getting, I feel like OSU would rout OU by at least three touchdowns. Yea, the Sooners have Baker Mayfield, but ever since Mayfield planted that flag in The ‘Shoe, this Ohio State team has played off-the-charts good. You have got to believe that if the Bucks got another crack at Mayfield and the Sooners, there’s no way they play like they did back in Week 2.

Mayfield woke the sleeping giant in Ohio State. How karmic would it be if OSU got the victory against Oklahoma at the Granddaddy of them All?

At Sports Illustrated, the sentiment was with the majority of their writers: Ohio State is a playoff team at season’s end. Three of the seven writers had the Rose Bowl for OSU, while one (Scooby Axson) had the Sugar Bowl being where the Buckeyes would end up.

Bruce Feldman was the only one to put Ohio State in the National Championship Game. However, Feldman, and the rest of the writers, had Alabama winning the title one way or another.

Note: The reason why there’s an ‘I think’ next to two of the writers’ bowl projections is that Penn State is marked in both of their playoff and New Year’s Six bowl predictions. (So, I figured that they meant Ohio State was their New Year’s Six pick, not Penn State. If an update occurs, the table above will reflect that change.)

Last week, Erick Smith had Georgia playing Ohio State in the Peach Bowl. This week, he has the Bulldogs in the playoff—and the Buckeyes staying put.

While not a rematch, it’s a recent meeting, as just two seasons ago in the Fiesta Bowl was the last time the Fighting Irish and Buckeyes played on the same gridiron.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. That’s what must be happening with the ESPN projections for Ohio State.

After chaos reigned supreme last week, the bowl projections stayed the same for the Buckeyes. Kyle Bonagura has a Peach Bowl for the Scarlet and Gray, while David Hale has an Orange Bowl meeting with The U.

My sentiment stays the same this week on a possible South Florida matchup: It would be bad for the Buckeyes. The Bucks would be huge favorites if that game happened, and anything less than a blowout would bring out the critics.

An Orange Bowl with the Hurricanes wouldn’t be too bad, though; I do like the notion of another meeting with Miami. (Especially if the outcome is Nebraska-esque with the Buckeyes walking out of the Sunshine State with a 56-14 win.)

Marcel Brooks would make a great addition to the Buckeyes' DB/LB recruiting legacy.

Tomorrow Buckeye Nation will feast its eyes on the biggest Big Ten game of the day when rival Michigan heads to Happy Valley in a “white-out” to take on Penn State. With the Ohio State bye week, you can guarantee that Buckeye fans and the players themselves will be giving their full attention to the prime time matchup.

With Ohio State being able to rest up and get ready for their own Penn State matchup next week, the coaching staff was able to do more of what they’re really good at besides coaching: recruit. With game day being over a week away, Urban Meyer and his gang were able to hit the trails again in full force doing their best to lure in their top prospects and improve on their already loaded 2018 class.

Top DB/LB has Bucks in Top list

If there is a common trend in Ohio State football recruiting, it’s the fact that defensive backs love what the Buckeyes are selling. And who wouldn’t? With each and every year being nothing but a recipe for success, and the end result being a selection in the NFL Draft, that has to make an impression on any top prep prospect. If you look at guys like Gareon Conley, Marshon Lattimore, Bradley Roby, Eli Apple, and Malik Hooker, you get the point. Ohio State develops defensive backs just as well if not better than any other program in the country. However, if there’s another position the Buckeyes can develop, it’s linebacker. It’s easy to go in to detail with guys like Raekwon McMillan, Ryan Shazier, and more, but we’ll stop there.

Yesterday, Marcel Brooks, a 4-star safety and linebacker hybrid prospect from Flower Mound, Texas, released his top six schools list, and as usual when a top recruit narrows down his options, the Buckeyes were involved. The 6'3, 200-pound hybrid is currently ranked as the eleventh-best outside linebacker in the country for the 2019 class and also the seventh-best player in the loaded state of Texas. With nearly 20 scholarship offers, it’s clear to see Brooks is deserving of his high 4-star status.

Making the cut for Marcel in his list of six includes TCU, Clemson, Alabama, Oklahoma, Penn State, and Ohio State. Being a Texas product, you can bet Tom Herman and his staff will certainly look to join the mix for his services, but if Ohio State thinks they can swoop into Texas again for one of the state’s best kids, Urban Meyer will certainly pull out all of stops.

Togiai conflicted between the two

Ohio State is beaming with pride at the defensive tackle haul they plan on bringing to campus in the class of 2018. With a 5-star and top prospect at the position already in the fold with Taron Vincent, the Buckeyes and position coach Larry Johnson don’t have any plans but to continue adding size, speed, and strength to bolster their already impressive defensive line. One prep star they would love to add to the mix is the ever-popular Tommy Togiai, a prospect not new to Buckeye fans in the least bit.

Recently, Togiai visited Washington and came away extremely impressed with what the Huskies are building on. After shutting down his recruitment with the exception for two teams, Ohio State and Washington look to be battling head-to-head for this standout’s services when his name is signed on the dotted line.

Coaches hit the road

With the bye week, Ohio State coaches were given the task to hit the road and continue dominating the recruiting trail as they look to secure the rest of their 2018 class. Of the many stops along the way, Ohio State receivers coach Zack Smith headed to St. Louis, Missouri (a place Buckeye fans should thank repeatedly for giving them Ezekiel Elliot). Smith was there to check on Kamryn Babb, a 6'1, 190-pound receiver the Buckeyes are trying hard to bring to Columbus to join L’Christian “Blue” Smith as the receivers in the 2018 class.

Babb, who unfortunately saw his senior season cut far too short thanks to an ACL injury, has still kept in contact with Ohio State and what they have to offer. Of course, LSU still has their sights set on Babb in hopes of bringing him to Death Valley. However, Ohio State has other plans for the nation’s fourth-best receiver prospect and Missouri’s top player in the 2018 class.

Kamryn has plans to visit “officially” for the Penn State game next week and rumors have circulated that Babb could potentially pull the trigger and be on “commit watch,” but we’ll have to see how this one plays out. Fortunately, most believe that the Buckeyes still lead for Babb and are certainly the team to beat for his signature.
