What.A.Game

It was seen as the game of the week in college football: The Penn State Nittany Lions, ranked No. 2, traveling to face the No. 6-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes, and it was that and more.

An opening kickoff getting returned for a touchdown by Nittany Lions running back Saquon Barkley, and a fumble on the Buckeyes’ first offensive series put them behind the eight-ball early, and played a role in the Buckeyes’ early deficit.

Penalties were also a major contributor the Buckeyes’ struggles. Ten penalties for 79 yards—which included multiple false starts—stopped momentum. On top of that, two fumbles contributed to the struggles. Ohio State out-gained Penn State on offense, and it took until the final 1:48 for the Buckeyes to get their first lead at 39-38, and that is where the scoring ended.

Quarterback J.T. Barrett passed for 3 touchdowns—with the first one making him the Big Ten leader in that category. The late-strike to Marcus Baugh over the middle for a 16-yard touchdown with 1:48 left proved to be the difference maker.

Penn State had a chance to get the lead back late, but the Buckeye defense, specifically the defense line, clamped down and completely shut down quarterback Trace McSorley and Saquon Barkley in the waning minutes of the game.

Ohio State outscored the No. 2 team in the country, 19-3, in the fourth quarter and now sit atop the Big Ten East. If anything, this game showed the Buckeyes have improved since the Oklahoma loss, and are the team to beat in the Big Ten.

But more importantly, OSU now controls its own destiny in the pursuit of a College Football Playoff spot.

Here’s the in-depth recap of the game:

On the opening kickoff, Barkley field the ball on the three and cut diagonally to the far sideline. In the process of doing that, he had blockers paving the way; the way was so well paved, that OSU kicker Sean Nuernberger was the only person to even make an attempt at bringing down the Heisman Trophy frontrunner. When you have a Heisman contender versus a kicker, it generally doesn’t go well for the kicker. Barkley bolted right past Nuernberger and sprinted the rest of the way for a touchdown.

Fifteen seconds in, Barkley’s 97-yard kickoff return made it 7-0 nothing Penn State.

If you thought that was bad, things were about to get worse for the Buckeyes.

On the third play of their first drive, Barrett threw a screen to Parris Campbell, who picked up a solid 15 yards. However, he didn’t end the play with the ball—he got it stripped away. Penn State scooped up the loose ball and took it to the OSU 23. Five plays after that, and on a third-and-goal from the 13, McSorley through a fade pass to the corner of the southwest corner of the endzone to DaeSean Hamilton. Hamilton made the grab while covered, and brought the Nittany Lions to an early 14-0 lead.

Would the second drive go better for the Bucks? (The answer was no.)

Mike Weber lost five yards on a screen that was doomed from the start, Demetrius Knox got called for a false start, Marcus Baugh dropped an open pass, and J.T. Barrett scrambled up the middle for five yards on a third-and-20. Another three-and-out was delivered by the Buckeyes.

Luckily for OSU, PSU’s next drive stalled after six plays, but not before the Nittany Lions converted on a delayed screen on a third-and-10. On the ensuing punt, an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Penn State spotted the Buckeyes 15 yards—which would come in handy.

Starting the drive at their own 42, Barrett and co. moved the ball down the field, eventually hitting the redzone. Penalties were once again a problem, as two false starts (on Isaiah Prince and K.J. Hill) stopped the momentum when things seemed to be heating up. Even though all that, OSU had a third-and-10 from the PSU 13. However, Barrett took a sack, and the Buckeyes settled for three points.

Nuernberger’s field goal cut the deficit to 14-3, and it was the first time this season that anybody scored on Penn State in the first quarter.

The comeback had some momentum after a three-and-out by PSU on their next drive. When OSU got back on offense, a 21-yard rush by Dobbins had the momentum needle pivoting back toward the Buckeyes’ side. But a sack, and busted screen play put Ohio State in a third and long situation. Austin Mack got six yards back on the third down reception, but the first real gamble was about to happen: Urban Meyer elected to go for it on fourth-and-8 from the PSU 25. This would be the last play of the quarter, and the Barrett would make a completion across the middle to Hill. But as soon as Hill tried to put the brakes on and make a cut move around a defender, he was grabbed by the ankle and pulled down a couple yards short of the first down marker.

After the first quarter, Penn State led 14-3.

The scoring would continue in the second quarter, as both teams traded blows.

Starting on their own 19, McSorley marched the Nittany Lions to the OSU 45 in seven plays. On the seventh play, he threw an incompletion to Jonathan Holland, but a Jerome Baker pass interference call gave the visitors a fresh set of downs on the 36. The first play after the PI call, Barkley took the rush up the middle for a few yards, and then bounced to the edge—blowing past the defense with his change in direction—all the way to house. The play was reviewed, as it appeared that Barkley stepped out at the three, but there wasn’t enough evidence to overturn the initial TD ruling.

Penn State pushed their lead out to 18 with 11:33 left in the half.

Ohio State needed an answer. Their next drive was about to deliver just that. Weber opened up the drive with five and six yard rushes, respectively. The no-huddle offense was utilized heavily on the drive—and it paid off. Barrett hit a wide-open Mack for 36 yards. A two-yard rush by Weber put the Buckeyes on the 14, which allowed Barrett to break the Big Ten passing TD mark with a pass to Terry McLaurin.

The Buckeyes cut into the Nittany Lions’ lead, making the game 21-10 with 9:14 left in the half.

But, as things looked to be going Ohio State’s way, a short kick on special teams was brought 59 yards to the OSU 23 by Koa Farmer. A 14-yard completion by McSorley to Gesicki was called back because Gesicki stepped out of bounds on his own accord and touched the ball first. (That play resulted in a loss of down.)

On the next play, McSorley threw the ball to his (covered) receiver in the northwest corner of the endzone, and was picked off by Damon Webb. But hold the phone, a flag was thrown because Damon Arnette held the receiver. That 15-yard penalty placed the ball on the OSU 6, which was then taken to the endzone by McSorley on the next play.

Penn State reclaimed an 18-point lead with 8:06 left.

A no-huddle offense was brought back on the Buckeyes’ next drive. Again, Barrett took command of the drive by keeping the ball on the options or throwing it on the first seven plays of the drive. On a third-and-five from the PSU 10, Barrett took a chance in the air for a TD to Johnnie Dixon, but the pass fell incomplete. However, Dixon was grabbed in the endzone, and a pass interference call went against Penn State. Next play, Weber punched the ball in from two yards out, cutting the deficit to 28-17.

That would be all the scoring the first half, but the drama didn’t end. OSU punter Drue Chrisman bobbled a punt, but managed to get it off in the waning minutes of the half.

Here’s what the team comparison looked like at halftime:

OSU_PSU_1sthalf.jpeg
Stat Broadcast

Ohio State got the ball back after halftime—and they were a team on a mission. A 10-play drive got all the way down to the PSU 19. A no-call for defensive pass interference on third down forced the Nuernberger field goal from 36 yards out.

Now, if the Buckeyes just caught a break, things may go their way.

[in Ron Howard narrator voice from Arrested Development: They didn’t get the break.]

McSorley converted on a third-and-10 by scrambling for 11 yards. Then on a third-and-three, Barkley picked up four.

But the absolute this-can’t-be-happening play was this one:

Denzel Ward pic.twitter.com/OYMqbsWa63

— Christopher Jason (@cjason112) October 28, 2017

Initially, the play was ruled an interception by Denzel Ward. However, after a review, DeAndre Thompkins appeared to get his hand under the ball—making it a touchdown.

That bonkers drive put the Lions up 35-20. The third quarter would end with that score.

Wildness was about to come in the fourth, though. On the first drive of the quarter, a bad pull-back on a read-option by Barrett led to a fumble, and a PSU recovery. Good news, though: Penn State was about to make a goof, too. After a three-and-out, Ward got around the Nittany Lions blockers around the edge, and blocked the punt.

It was shades of last year.

With the ball on the PSU 41 after the block, Barrett atoned for his fumble. On the second play of the drive, the three-time Buckeye captain hit a wide open Dixon over the middle for a 38-yard score.

The score was 35-27 with 11 minutes left in the game; Ohio State had to make a stop on the next drive.

But, it couldn’t be done, as McSorley converted multiple third down conversions to get the Nittany Lions on the doorstep on the endzone. Three points were pulled from the drive, making it 38-27 visitors with 5:37 left in regulation.

Now gut check time, the Buckeyes had to score—and they did just that. A five-play drive fueled behind bullet throws from Barrett, and a pass interference call on Penn State, led to a score.

Dixon hauled in a 10-yard catch in the corner of the end zone by Barrett. While the six points helped, the two-point conversion—and end-around with Dixon—came up short.

Ohio State was down 38-33, but they forced a three-and-out on Penn State, and pinned them deep in their own territory.

It was the worst of times in the beginning, but it was about to be the best of times. Penn State’s defense crumbled under the pressure, while Barrett and the Buckeyes, it seemed, had all the momentum in the college football universe behind them.

Following the punt and down five, the Buckeyes had to march from their own 42 if they wanted the leading score.

[In Howard’s narration voice: They did just that]

The hurry offense moved down the field,

At least there’s something to be happy about today.

With a cavalcade of special teams errors, needless false start penalties, and head-scratching play calls, one of the lone bright spots of the first half against Penn State was quarterback J.T. Barrett’s record-setting touchdown pass to receiver Terry McLaurin.

Here's the TD toss that gave J.T. Barrett the all-time lead in Big Ten passing touchdowns.

The TD throw, the senior’s 91st of his career, breaks the Big Ten conference record previously held by Purdue all-time great Drew Brees. The record is the latest that Barrett has broken this season.

Against Army, Barrett broke the B1G all-time total touchdown record, also held by Brees, with a TD pass to Austin Mack. Also this season, Barrett has set a new high-mark for career passing in Ohio State program history.

The Buckeyes have no won four out out their last five

After a disappointing home opening series against Rensselaer two weeks ago in Columbus, the Buckeyes’ offense seems to finally have woken up as they scored four of the game’s last five goals to knock off underdog Robert Morris, 5-3, at Value City Arena.

They Buckeyes improve to 4-1-2 on the year, with their only loss coming at No. 5 Wisconsin, while Robert Morris falls to 2-4. This was only the second time new goalie Sean Romeo has allowed more than two goals, with the other being the loss at UW. (But when your offense puts up five, it’s the right time to have a clunker in net.)

This one didn’t start out particularly well for Romeo or the OSU offense, however. Robert Morris scored two goals within 1:04 in the first, with tallies by Luke Lynch and Timmy Moore at 10:41 and 11:45, respectively. With the way Ohio State’s offense played against a poorer RPI team, one certainly had a right to be skeptical with how the Puckeyes would respond.

The unexpected response turned out to be quick though as Tanner Laczynski finally scored his first of the year, with assists from Matthew Weis and Dakota Joshua just 18 seconds after Moore put Robert Morris up 2-0. That’s three goals in 1:22 for those counting at home.

College hockey: defense optional!

Shots were 10-9 in the first for the Buckeyes, which they should’ve been as the team was trailing for nearly half the period. More importantly, it would turn out, the Buckeyes went into the second with 1:44 of carryover powerplay time resulting from Spencer Dorowicz’s penalty for cross checking at 19:44 of the first.

John Wiitala made the Colonials pay for that one with his third of the year at 1:30 of the second. Joshua and Mason Jobst had the assists on the score.

One minute and one second later, Ohio State got another first to go along with Laczynski’s first of the year they received in the first. Eugene Fadyeyev, the freshman from the Ukraine, scored his first collegiate goal at 2:31 of the second after Matthew Weis found him with a behind the back pass to give OSU the 3-2 lead.

RMU wasn’t ready to say die after the Buckeye onslaught, though. After Wyatt Ege was sent off for interference at 9:16 of the second, giving Robert Morris life after Ohio State had a stranglehold on momentum from the three unanswered goals, Robert Morris answered. Daniel Mantenuto scored his first of the year on the man advantage and suddenly it was a tie game once again.

That’d be all Romeo would let in. Robert Morris would total 18 shots between the second and third and only that powerplay score got behind Romeo. He stopped 17 out of 18 in the last two periods and all seven in the third alone.

Romeo’s stand in net would keep it tied until Weis broke the tie at 19:00 of the second to give OSU the lead back at 4-3. Sasha Larocque carried the puck in, found Laczynski behind the net and he hit Weis in front to set him up for his second of the year and what turned out to be the game winning goal.

Romeo wouldn’t let RMU tie it in the third and was aided by two separate Colonial minor penalties to give Ohio State some time to breathe until Austin Pooley scored his first collegiate goal to ice this one (no pun intended). He backhanded it in off a feed from who else, Laczynski, and put this one away.

Larocque would be sent off for holding in the third at 14:43, giving RMU more life, but they couldn’t capitalize as the Buckeyes killed off three out of four powerplay opportunities the Colonials were given. That one RMU converted was only the second powerplay goal the Buckeyes have allowed all year.

Romeo wasn’t great in this one overall, only stopping 24/27 shots, but he recovered and stoned the Colonials in the second and third to give the Buckeyes the chance to finish this one off. Ohio State finished with 45 shots on goal, in a effort similar to the first game against RPI two weekends ago. OSU wasn’t rewarded in that one, but the effort paid off here and the Buckeyes defeated an inferior team.

The two teams will square off once again, on Saturday night as the weekend series shifts to Pittsburgh. Hopefully this will be just the second win of the day on Saturday for an Ohio State team versus one from Pennsylvania.

The Buckeyes are looking for redemption on their quest for a perfection in the Big Ten.

After five weeks of relative ease, the Ohio State Buckeyes will finally be put to the test tonight against the No.2-ranked team in the nation. Penn State represents the first major opposition the Buckeyes have faced since their Week 2 loss to Oklahoma in Columbus, and the Nittany Lions bring the Heisman Trophy frontrunner Saquon Barkley alongside one of the conference’s best quarterbacks in Trace McSorley to lead the charge.

For Ohio State, the bitter memory of last season’s sole regular season defeat in Happy Valley still stings. The undefeated Buckeyes lost on a series of special teams blunders that could just as well have cost them a chance at the College Football Playoff. Now, Ohio State gets the Nittany Lions in Columbus, following a bye week, with every shot at redemption.

Penn State, meanwhile, is looking for payback of its own. Despite defeating the Buckeyes, the Nittany Lions were shut out of the CFP and relegated to the Rose Bowl against USC.

This matchup, naturally, has massive implications for the college football postseason this year. With the Big Ten East race currently in a three-way tie for first among Ohio State, Penn State and Michigan State, the winner of Saturday’s matchup will be in control of its own destiny for the remainder of the conference season (Penn State is scheduled to face Michigan State next week in East Lansing). And while the Buckeyes were written off early by some, a win over the Nittany Lions would go a long way in convincing members of the College Football Playoff committee ahead of this week’s opening poll.

The game we have all been waiting for has finally arrived.

When is the game and how can I watch?

Game Date/Time: Saturday, Oct. 28, 3:30 p.m. ET

Location: Columbus, OH

TV: FOX

Online: FOXSportsGo

What’s the rest of the Big Ten up to this weekend?

Some say College Football Playoff, while others say Fiesta Bowl against Notre Dame or Washington

These are getting a tad bit more fun to do. A few weeks ago, one of the bowl projections for the Ohio State Buckeyes pointed to the Citrus Bowl; now, once again, all the analysts/writers in this week’s bowl prediction round-up have the Scarlet and Gray in either a playoff game or a New Year’s Six bowl contest.

Let’s get this show on the road, and see who is believing in a College Football Playoff appearance for the Bucks.

Jerry Palm at CBS Sports has been a believer for the past few weeks. This week, it’s the Rose Bowl (again) as the projected landing spot for OSU in the postseason. He also reiterates the belief that a rematch with the Penn State Nittany Lions would happen in the Rose Bowl—meaning he has OSU winning on Saturday vs. PSU.

SB Nation’s own Jason Kirk also has Urban Meyer coaching the team back to the playoffs. Like Palm, Kirk’s matchup has a rematch flavor in the Grandaddy of them All.

Whether it’s the Oklahoma Sooners or Nittany Lions, a rematch seems to be in store for the Buckeyes—if everything else goes according to plan.

[inhales deeply, then sighs]

The Fiesta Bowl is, once again, another popular prediction for where the Buckeyes will be spending their postseason. If this is true, it would make for a three-year run in Glendale, Ariz.

Don’t get me wrong, the Fiesta Bowl is a nice bowl game to go to. But for Ohio State fans, a change in bowl game scenery would be a welcomed sight.

I just mentioned that a change in scenery would be nice, but be careful what you wish for.

ESPN’s Kyle Bonagura has the Buckeyes in the Cotton Bowl, but their opponent would be Notre Dame, the same foe they faced in the 2016 Fiesta Bowl.

David Hale has an Orange Bowl appearance for OSU, with Miami getting a virtual home game. It wasn’t too long ago that the Buckeyes were in this bowl. In 2014, Meyer’s first bowl appearance as head coach of Ohio State was an Orange Bowl.

With a little over 24 hours until the gameday, the anticipation is unbearable. This highly anticipated clash between two Top 6 BIG teams that are both fighting for a spot in this seasons CFB Playoffs. A season ago, the higher ranked Buckeyes slept on the Nittany Lions during a White Out and they ended up losing after a FG was returned for a TD.

Black Out at the Shoe

This year Ohio State will host Penn State in another Blackout at the Shoe game that will feature new uniforms for the Buckeyes. They will be sporting an all gray uniforms that will impress even the most close-minded, traditionalist fans who always seem to complain.

This uniform combination will display the Buckeyes staff willingness to venture outside of the traditional Scarlet and Gray to impress the nation and any recruiting targets that will tune in or be present at the game itself. This will provide a unique and electric atmosphere that could sway the momentum in the Buckeyes favor because last season they lost at Penn State during a White Out. The Buckeyes will use this new found swag in their favor to avenge their defeat from a season ago.

Battle of the Dual Threats

J.T. Barrett and Trace McSorley will be leaned on heavily during the entirety of this clash. Both have the improved as the season progressed and both have the same tools to will their teams to a victory.

J.T. Barrett has improved a lot since the blunder against Oklahoma. Although it was mostly against inferior teams the Buckeyes high-powered offense is tied for the lead with UCF in scoring offense averaging 47.3 PPG with 44 total TD’s so far this season. This Buckeye offense will be the toughest challenge for the Nittany Lions this season. The playmakers are making timely, high impact plays and Barrett is playing at a high, concentrated level, but he will have difficulties against the nations top ranked defense that is giving up 9.6 PPG.

Trace McSorley also has a Top 20 ranked offense coming in at 17th in the nation averaging 40.0 PPG. They have weapons at every level which will make it interesting to watch. McSorley has to establish himself early against the inconsistent and often penalized Cornerbacks that Ohio State starts. Ohio State ranks as the 10th best defense and is giving up 15.4 PPG.

BIA/Linebackers/Rushmen vs Barkley/Gesicki/Hamilton

Ohio State will have their hands full this weekend at every level on defense. Penn State has by far the most talented offense that is similar to Oklahoma but they have an effective running game with weapons at every level.

McSorley has Saquon Barkley at RB, Daesean Hamilton and a bunch of talent at WR and Mike Gesicki at the TE position. Combined they make up a formidable offense that could give the Buckeyes trouble early and possibly even often. Each level have a playmaker and another that is almost as effective as the last.

The Buckeyes must make it a priority to play disciplined and error free to leave victorious. To do that they must not fall for the misdirection and fakes that Penn State has in their playbook. They must also bottle up Barkley who is their do it all playmaking back that has Penn State faithful thinking Heisman and eventually a Championship. Barkely has 1,930 yards combining his one pass, receiving and rushing with 12 total TD’s.

After that the combination of Gesicki and Hamilton scares me a tad bit more that Barkley. Together they account for 709 yards and 8 touchdowns and that isn’t including Johnson and Blackalls contributions at receiver.

On the Buckeyes side of things, the glaring weakness for Penn State is their Offensive Line which plays into their strength their Rushmen package. Paired with the Linebackers and Big Play Baker, the Buckeyes could dominate if they control the trenches on defense. It will not be easy because of McSorley’s ability to run, but it is attainable.

BIA will be challenged in this game until the final whistle blows. The collection of receivers that the Buckeyes will face poses a threat to them due to their inconsistency and their habit of earning holding and pass interference penalties.

Special Teams Blunders

Special Teams will have a huge chip on their shoulders after last seasons unexpected loss to Penn State. The recurring storyline for Ohio State is their lack of success or consistency in the Special Teams department, which is coincidentally Urban Meyers specialty.

This season, they have struggled mightily as they limp into this game. With a combination of giving up big returns to missed or blocked FG’s Penn State could hurt the Buckeyes with Barkley in this phase of the game.

Coach Meyer must be laser focused and the team needs to perform for this phase to avoid another last minute blocked FG. The importance of this game will not overlook the issues that have plagued the Buckeyes this season and with that, Meyer will look to excel at this phase and all other phases of the game to leave with another win.

Prediction

I personally want to see a blowout win for the Buckeyes but I cannot overlook Penn State because of the many weapons that they possess on both sides of the ball. This will be another slow burn game that will develop over time.

I believe balance will be the key and Dobbins and Weber will be needed to establish the run while Barrett makes the passes necessary to move the ball into scoring positions. Barrett will be harassed and the right side will be tested once again. Prince and Knox will be tested because they were targeted a lot because of their inability to protect Barrett.

Final: 38-31 Buckeyes

Here’s the full slate of college football games this weekend.

The main event on Saturday is the 3:30 p.m. showdown between the No. 2 Penn State Nittany Lions and No. 6 Ohio State Buckeyes for, not only top spot in the Big Ten East division — along with Michigan State, somehow --, but for a chance to control their destiny heading into the College Football Playoff.

Aside from arguably one of the best matchups of the entire season taking place in Columbus, there are three other top-25 games and at least one SEC game with big upset potential. Your best option in the Noon time-slot is No. 11 Oklahoma State at No. 22 West Virginia, with No. 4 TCU-No. 25 Iowa State and No. 14 NC State-No. 9 Notre Dame competing for the afternoon audience.

Another 3:30 p.m. game that could get interesting is No. 3 Georgia vs an unranked Florida team. While the Bulldogs sit undefeated, anything can happen during rivalry games, and this has the potential to shake up the top of the rankings heading into the first official College Football Playoff rankings, to be released on Tuesday.

Here’s the full slate of games this weekend, and how to watch:
