C.J. Jackson leads the Buckeyes to the biggest win of the Holzmann era.

Following their blowout at the hands of Gonzaga in the quarterfinals early Friday morning, the Ohio State Buckeyes (5-1) got back in the win column with the first victory over a Power 5 opponent in the Chris Holtmann era, knocking off the Stanford Cardinal (3-4), 79-71.

Against Gonzaga, it took Jae’Sean Tate until the second half to get into the offensive flow. However, against the Cardinal, Tate got the scoring started for OSU a minute and a half in as he blew past his defender and threw down an impressive two-hand dunk. Both teams struggled to get their offenses going early, but OSU freshman Kaleb Wesson kicked the Buckeyes into gear.

Getting just the second start of his young career in place of the injured Micah Potter, Wesson followed up Tate’s jam with two buckets of his own, giving OSU the early 6-2 lead at the game’s first media timeout. Potter was able to play off of the bench in the game, spelling Kaleb Wesson after the break. The sophomore had a two points and two rebounds in just six minutes of action.

Stanford struggled mightily in the first six and a half minutes, going 0-6 after making the first basket of the game. They also turned the ball over four times and had a pair of offensive fouls to compound their poor shooting.

However, their tight zone defense kept the Buckeyes from building a sizable lead, and following a three from freshman Oscar Da Silva and a dunk from Reid Travis, the Cardinal took a 7-6 lead into the under-12 timeout.

After a Stanford three and a Tate layup, Kaleb Wesson was called for his second foul of the game and had to subbed out. The whistle was for the fifth offensive foul of in the early going of the game.

With the OSU big man out, Keita Bates-Diop hit his first basket of the game, a three from the top of the key. Even though the junior was the unquestioned on-court leader in the Buckeyes’ first four games, Bates-Diop was inconsistent against the Zags. While the triple was his first basket of the game, he did grab four early boards to make his presence felt, and his day only got better from there. The redshirt-junior finished the night with 18 points and 11 boards, one of two double-doubles for the Buckeyes.

For the majority of the first 10 minutes, Stanford maintained its lead, but the game remained close. Then, OSU junior guard C.J. Jackson stole a pass on the wing and raced to the other end and laid it in, cutting the lead to 19-18. Da Silva and Jackson exchanged threes, and Stanford senior Michael Humphrey hit a jumper in the lane and Isaac White hit a second-chance three to push the advantage to 27-21, the biggest lead of the game at that point.

Stanford extended its lead to 31-21 before the Buckeyes went on an 11-1 run to close the half. The streak included three more three-pointers from Bates-Diop, and a put-back from senior transfer Andrew Dakich. The teams went to the break tied at 32.

In the first 20 minutes, while the Buckeyes seemed to play with more sharpness than they did against Gonzaga, a definite lack of energy pervaded the majority of the first half, allowing the Cardinal to build their lead. However, over the last 2:33, OSU was able to clamp down on defense, and to move the ball on offense, setting up Bates-Diop with makable triples.

He led all scores at the intermission with 12, in addition to his team-best six boards. Da Silva was the high man for the Cardinal with eight points. Though Travis put up 23 against Florida the night before, he was held to just a single field goal in the first half by the Buckeyes.

The OSU comeback was fueled in large part by Stanford’s nine turnovers, which directly led to 12 points for the Buckeyes. The Cardinal held their biggest statistical advantage when it came to second chance points (10-2), which was emblematic of the difference in first half playing styles. With Kaleb Wesson out of the game, the Buckeyes played most of the first half without a true big man, relying on pull-up jumpers and guards isolating and driving to the rim alone.

On the other side of the floor, Stanford was often working the ball inside by design, allowing them to dominate underneath.

In the first possession of the second half, Jackson hit a three pointer to give the Buckeyes their first lead since early in the game, 35-34. Three minutes into the second half, Tate drove along the baseline, and spun into a left handed layup while getting fouled. With the free throw, OSU went up 42-36.

The energy that allowed the Buckeyes to close the lead at the end of the first half was carried over into the second 20 minutes, as OSU was near perfect in the 4:31 before the first timeout of the half. The team shot 6-9 (71.4%) from the field, including 1-2 from beyond the arc.

Ohio State continued to build their lead on three consecutive layups by freshman Musa Jallow, Jackson, and Bates-Diop. The latter gave the Buckeyes their largest lead of the game at 48-38, and forced Stanford head coach Jerod Haase to take a timeout.

Out of the timeout, the Cardinal came out fighting, cutting the lead to 50-44 in the next 90 seconds. Despite the rush, the Buckeyes held onto the advantage, 56-48, as they got to the under-eight timeout.

As the game progressed, it was the Buckeyes’ upperclassmen that led the way, as the game’s three top scorers were Jackson (15), Bates-Diop (14), and Tate (12) with 7:54 remaining.

However, Stanford kept clawing back, and eventually cut the lead to five, but with the OSU offense stagnant, Jackson hit an incredibly deep three to get the lead back to 61-53. The junior guard would end up leading all scorers with 23. He added in six rebounds and three assists as well.

With 3:16 left in regulation, Humphrey came a little too hard on a rebound attempt and picked up his fifth foul. The penalty put Kaleb Wesson on the free-throw line. The big man made one of two to get into double digits, putting the Buckeyes back up eight, 65-57. Less than a minute later, Travis barreled through Tate to earn his fifth foul of the game. Humphrey exited with nine points and nine boards, and Travis had 14 points and six rebounds.

The disqualifications kept coming as Kaleb Wesson was whistled for his fifth, nullifying a Bates-Diop second-chance bucket. The younger Wesson exited with 10 points and three boards. His older brother Andre added three points and a rebound in the game.

With just under a minute left, Stanford junior Robert Cartwright hit a pull-up three to cut the lead to 69-63. After a pair of Daejon Davis free throws, the Cardinal got the lead to just two possessions at 72-67 with 28 seconds remaining.

Thanks to two late, unnecessary fouls, Tate fouled out with just 14 seconds remaining, but Stanford couldn’t overcome the deficit. The Pickerington-native exited the game with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Despite fouling out, Davis was the Cardinal’s high scorer with 15, while Da Silva also chipped in 14 as well.

With his dad calling the game for ESPN, Michigan-transfer Dakich earned a career high with six points to go along with four rebounds. Though he was largely overlooked during his time in Ann Arbor, Dakich has proven to be a steadying force in the back-court for Holtmann’s young team.

The Ohio State Buckeyes will wrap up the PK80 tournament as they take on Chris Holtmann’s old team, the Butler Bulldogs, on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. ET/12:00 p.m. PT.

Plus, Ohio State’s icy uniforms, and Mike Weber’s return to Ann Arbor.

The 2017 edition of The Game is here, and —what a surprise— there’s a lot on the line for both teams.

For Ohio State: A sixth straight win over Michigan, another double digit-win season, and a possible playoff berth still in the balance.

For Michigan: Avoiding another offseason of takes about Jim Harbaugh’s inability to beat his rivals, ending a five-game losing streak in The Game, and the chance to close what’s been an up-and-down regular season on a high note.

The Game is the best rivalry in college football because the intensity is always there, no matter what. It’s always the hardest played game of the season, regardless of what’s at stake. It just so happens that tomorrow’s game has a hell of a lot in that regard, and should be one we remember for a long time.

With that in mind, here are five things I’m watching for tomorrow during the 2017 edition of The Game:

The uniform forecast is FROSTY

This really has nothing to do with the game itself, but Ohio State is sporting some slick new uniforms tomorrow, and it’s a shame that they can’t take the field to this, because good lord, these unis are icy.

The Buckeyes have sported cocaine white alternates a couple of times in their last few trips to Ann Arbor, and these are my favorites of the bunch. They’re the road version of the set from the Penn State game, so they’re bound to bring a little bit of good luck, right? The LeBron James-sponsored cleats are also great, but I’m not sure anything can top the FUN ZONE’S Braxton Miller wore in 2013.

Of course, my opinion could change if Ohio State loses, but if we still can’t get a night game between these two, at least we’ve got some variety on the uniform front.

The odds of a fight breaking out are high

It seems we see a fight or some sort of dustup every year in The Game —whether it’s before, or during— and it wouldn’t be a shock to see another one after UM running back Karan Higdon’s comments earlier this week:

"I think everyone knows we definitely won that game" -- Higdon on last year's game

— angelique (@chengelis) November 20, 2017

Ohio State probably heard him:

Just based on reactions tonight at Ohio State, I can almost guarantee you they've been made aware of the Michigan players who said the Wolverines were the true winners of last year's game.

— Lori Schmidt (@LoriSchmidt) November 22, 2017

No one on the Ohio State side has said anything in response yet, but we’re going to find out just how high emotions are running when the two teams take the field, and it’ll be interesting to see if anything gets out of control early on.

Michigan likes to get sexy with its tight ends and fullbacks

Michigan uses a Fullback/H-Back to manipulate opposing Linebackers into the wrong gaps with a subtle fake into the backside A gap before curving back towards the play side. pic.twitter.com/DEv8Hj8kA2

— Kyle Morgan (@NoHuddleScouts) November 23, 2017

Michigan makes up for their lack of offensive creativity —from a conventional, 2017 offensive perspective— with how they use their tight ends and fullbacks in both the running and passing game.

The GIF above illustrates that although UM has the reputation as a ground-and-pound team, there’s more to the offense than just lining up 2,000 pounds of beef and bulldozing ahead. There are subtle intricacies their fullbacks use that help confuse linebackers and safeties, and open up running lanes. This should be of particular concern to Ohio State, given the way that Iowa’s similar offense was able to manipulate the middle of the Buckeye defense.

Two of Michigan’s top three receivers this season are tight ends, so it’s imperative that Tuf Borland, Chris Worley, and Jerome Baker play much better than they did against the Hawkeyes. Also, please don’t be the team that breaks this beautiful streak from the Michigan offense::

The last time a Michigan wide receiver caught a touchdown pass was in Week 2 against Cincinnati. https://t.co/J0rW5CSYI8

— Dan Murphy (@DanMurphyESPN) November 19, 2017
Mike Weber goes back to Michigan

I'm decommiting from the university of Michigan thank you Michigan for the love and support I'll remake my decision at the army bowl

— Mike Weber (@mikeweberjr) November 22, 2014

Just over three years after decommitting from Michigan, Mike Weber finally has the chance to play in Ann Arbor. If his recent play is any indicator, it should be a hell of a moment for the Cass Tech alum.

Weber looks completely healthy for the first time in his whole Ohio State career, and has rushed for 270 yards and four touchdowns the last two weeks. More impressively, he’s showcased a bit of elusiveness, plus breakaway speed that definitely wasn’t in his arsenal through his first seven games this season, or even when he won the Big Ten Freshman Player of the Year Award in 2016.

Michigan’s run defense has been excellent for the most part, but Wisconsin was able to wear them down a bit last week, running for 123 second half yards. It’d obviously be great if Ohio State could have that type of success from the start of the game, but Weber’s bruising running style —combined with his recent big play ability— suits the physical matchup tomorrow will be.

Woody and Bo would love the line play in this game

Speaking of physicality, it wouldn’t be right to preview The Game without talking about the battle in the trenches. Like most Ohio State-Michigan contests, whomever wins along the line of scrimmage will probably win The Game.

The most intriguing matchup is between the Buckeyes’ offensive line and the Wolverines’ defensive line. In Maurice Hurst, Rashan Gary, and Chase Winovich, UM has arguably the best trio of linemen in college football, and limiting the negative plays they can create (51 combined run stuffs) will likely be the key to Ohio State’s offensive success.

Since the Iowa debacle, Ohio State’s offensive line has been impressive, helping the Buckeyes gain 660 rushing yards and 8 touchdowns over the last two weeks. It’s an improvement that hasn’t gone unnoticed:

They’ll need to be at their best against Michigan’s strong front, who’s only given up more than 200 rushing yards once this season.

If we’ve learned anything from Ohio State’s offensive struggles under Urban Meyer, it’s that they usually stem from not being able to run the ball (or, choosing not to run the ball), so we may find out pretty quickly whether the offensive line is up to the challenge, and just how successful the Buckeyes will be tomorrow.

Here’s the full slate of college football games this weekend and how to watch.

As the 2017 college football regular season comes to a close, the season finale’s slate of games will not disappoint. As if the Ohio State Buckeyes taking on rival TTUN wasn’t enough, the rest of the schedule is filled with in-state battles and conference rivalries.

Already on Friday, we were treated to a big Pitt win over former (heh) undefeated No. 2 Miami (FL), which should have huge implications on the College Football Playoff scenario. They Canes will still face Clemson in the ACC Championship, but a one-loss Miami should help a two-loss Ohio State team.

Other games on Saturday to keep an eye on, include: No. 1 Alabama vs. No. 6 Auburn (3:30 p.m.), West Virginia vs. No. 4 Oklahoma (3:45 p.m.), and No. 3 Clemson vs. No. 24 South Carolina (7:30 p.m.).

— Earl Campbell Award (@CampbellAward) November 22, 2017

Ohio State will be losing one its most decorated football players to ever suit up in the Scarlet and Gray, and as J.T. Barrett inches closer to his final game as a Buckeye, he continues to be named for postseason honors. The latest of which is the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, which honors the best football player from the state of Texas — Barrett was up for the award during his incredible first-year campaign in 2014.

Still on pace to potentially best his personal single-season passing mark at Ohio State, he seems to rack up new records (both for the program and Big Ten Conference) with each quarter played.

He’ll face TTUN on Saturday, and is looking for his fourth set of gold pants. The Buckeyes have been one a hell of a run against the Harbaugh-led squad from Ann Arbor, but Barrett would like to finish out his Ohio State career with yet another victory over the rival. If the Buckeyes win tomorrow, Barrett would become the first OSU starting quarterback to beat the Wolverines for times.

Regardless of outcome, the QB won’t be calling it a season just yet, with the Buckeyes already set to play in the Big Ten Championship against undefeated Wisconsin. With a bit of chaos among the top of the CFP rankings — thanks to a season finale weekend filled with rivalry games — the winner of the Big Ten title could stamp their ticket into the final four.

“Stephanie Mavunga scored a career-high 35 points to lead No. 9/8 Ohio State to a 100-69 victory over Memphis on the opening day of Play4Kay Showcase at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.”

-Ohio State Buckeyes

The Ohio State women’s basketball team is living up to the lofty expectations that both the team and fans have for the 2017 season. In this weekend’s Play4Kay Showcase in Las Vegas, the Buckeyes are 1-0 heading into Friday night’s game against Florida Gulf Coast.

It was a big win, aside from being a solid start to a tournament weekend. Stephanie Mavunga snagged 19 points in the first quarter alone, and also grabbed 16 rebounds for her fifth double-double in the first six games.

Kelsey Mitchell was also part of the double-double club, claiming 20 points and three three-pointers — she’s just three triples away from tying the all-time NCAA record. Alexa Hart got her 1,000th career point on Thursday, making her the 34th Buckeye in program history to hit the 1k mark. Two other Buckeyes, Linnae Harper and Asia Doss, finished with double-digit points (10 each).

The Game is back.

There’s nothing else like it in sports. How can any game possibly stack up to this one?

Each iteration of The Game, each contest played anew, adds another chapter to this long and ugly rivalry. Storied as the past is, it feels as though things have reached a fever pitch in recent years, with an Urban Meyer-Jim Harbaugh showdown series that looks like it might grow to match the days of Woody and Bo.

Perhaps it’s the colossal beatdown the Buckeyes have laid on the Wolverines for the last 13 years, a streak with only one blemish on the record. Or maybe it was the creation of the College Football Playoff that heightened the stakes around this particular game each year.

There’s only one thing we know for sure: we’re in for a wild ride regardless. We’ve seen our fair share of drama in recent seasons, from Curtis Samuel’s overtime scamper to J.T. Barrett’s broken ankle to a certain controversial 4th-down measurement. Ann Arbor—hardly a friendly place to play, even when you’re not the hated rival of the Wolverines—hosts the game this year, and the atmosphere in the Big House is sure to add another layer of breathless excitement to the proceedings.

Senior quarterback J.T. Barrett will take the field against Michigan, a team that has never beaten him, for the final time tomorrow. Greg Schiano will conduct a defense that has shown itself to be one of the hungriest in the country against an offense that has fallen out of sorts and looks ripe for destroying. Ohio State—a preseason playoff favorite now desperately trying to claw back into the picture—has everything to play for in this one.

Only the strong survive this game. Don’t blink—you won’t want to miss a second of the action.

(Now, read the first letter of every sentence above for a very important secret message.)

Ohio State's biggest advantages

QB play. The Buckeyes are head-and-shoulders above the Wolverines when it comes to production at the game's most important position. While Michigan has cycled through three different starting quarterbacks this season, the Buckeyes have been led to a 9-2 record by J.T. Barrett. His performance in the Oklahoma and Iowa losses was abysmal, granted, but he's been close to flawless otherwise, throwing for 32 TDs to just 7 INTs as part of a 2,698-yard effort through the air. Add in what Barrett can do with his legs (680 yards and 8 TDs in 2017 so far) and you have a far superior quarterback than anyone the Wolverines are able to throw at the Buckeyes.

Who that'll be remains something of a mystery. Brandon Peters looked like the competent signal-caller the Wolverines had been missing after the uninspired showings of John O'Korn and Wilton Speight, but he went down with a concussion last week against Wisconsin. Even if Peters can go against the Buckeyes, he likely won't be at 100%; whoever suits up for UM, he'll be playing behind a line that's given up 29 sacks this season.

The rushing attack Hydra. The Wolverines have their own excellent rushing trio in Karan Higdon, Chris Evans, and Ty Isaac; that group has totaled 2,016 rushing yards and 18 TDs this season. But even those numbers can't stack up to what Ohio State has been able to put together on the ground with the combined efforts of J.K. Dobbins, Mike Weber, and J.T. Barrett. The Buckeye trio has put together 2,314 yards on the ground and 23 TDs, numbers which don't account for the impact each has made in the passing game.

In a game featuring a pair of top-tier defenses—more on that in a moment—any edge you can gain on offense might just be the deciding one. The Wolverines are no slouches when it comes to running the ball, but the Buckeyes are in a class by themselves. (The success rate rankings really bear this out—OSU is No. 1 nationally in rushing efficiency, while UM is just No. 69. Still nice.)

Shutting down drives. The contrast in the efficiency numbers listed above gets even more stark when you expand it out to encompass the whole offense. The Wolverines' paltry efforts in the passing game bring their total offensive efficiency down to just 91st nationally. They'll be forced to face off against a Buckeye defense that's 14th in that same category. In other words, Michigan isn't beating teams by marching down the field and moving the chains time after time; Ohio State, for its part, isn't letting teams do that, either.

On the flip side, Michigan has the country's best defense in the efficiency category, while Ohio State's offense is No. 1 by that metric. If it's impossible to guess how that battle might work itself out, we can take some hope in the Buckeyes' explosive play potential—they've got a handful of guys who are a threat to take the ball for six from anywhere on the field, and the Wolverines are just 109th at preventing plays like that despite their overall defensive stoutness.

Michigan's biggest advantages

Thanksgiving stuffing. No, seriously—the Wolverines are outstanding at stuffing the run. Defensive linemen Maurice Hurst and Chase Winovich pace the team with 20 and 17 run stuffs, respectively; that pair has also combined for 12 sacks on the season. This is a unit that consistently wins its battles up front, and that's bad news for a Buckeye team that has seen some streaky play from its o-line this year. It'll be hard to get J.K. Dobbins or Mike Weber going if they're getting mobbed in the backfield. Michigan is built to do just that.

Havoc. Jim Harbaugh and defensive coordinator Don Brown have created a defense that's second in the country when it comes to the best-named advanced stat, Havoc rate. Havoc rate measures the percentage of plays in which a defense records a tackle for loss (including sacks), an interception, a pass breakup, or a forced fumble. Almost no one does that more frequently than the Wolverines.

Hurst and Winovich are a big part of that ranking. So is Khaleke Hudson, who lines up in the "VIPER" position for the Wolverines—the hybrid LB/DB position where Jabrill Peppers found so much success (though not enough to ever beat the Buckeyes, ayyyy) in his Michigan career. Hudson went absolutely nuts a few weeks ago against Minnesota, recording one of the best single-game performances by a defender in Big Ten history. There are a lot of defenders on this Michigan team who are nothing short of terrifying, y'all.

The revenge factor. Let's face facts: The Buckeyes have absolutely sonned the Wolverines for the last decade and change. Ohio State is your dad now, Michigan. He moved into the house and he turned your playroom into his "music studio" and even though he's, like, old, you can never beat him in one-on-one driveway hoops. That damn sky hook of his absolutely shouldn't work, you know? But it does.

The Buckeyes have won 12 of the last 13 against the Wolverines, and that lone Michigan victory came in the transitional Luke Fickell year in which Joe Bauserman saw the field for an inexplicable number of snaps. But damn, have the Wolverines been close. They came within a point in 2013; they've lost by one score in five of those last 12 defeats. Last year saw the Buckeyes claim a win on the back of a dramatic 4th-quarter showing, a Spot that was absolutely Good, and some white-knuckle double overtime shenanigans.

This is a rivalry game—The rivalry game, really—and as our good friends over at the Solid Verbal are wont to remind us, rivalry games necessitate throwing the record books out. Is this the year that Michigan finally stops drawing shoddy renderings of Calvin peeing on the Ohio State logo and tells its mom to kick us out of the house? It just might be!

Summary

F/+ Projection: Ohio State 32, Michigan 21

Win Probability: Ohio State 72%

The Wolverine defense is good enough that the Buckeyes might struggle to get things going early, and like just about every iteration of this game, it will likely be close much longer than anyone is comfortable with. But Ohio State is rock-solid in just about every dimension of the game, and the Michigan passing game isn't a world-beater even if Brandon Peters can suit up. There's too much on the line for the Buckeyes to blow this one when they're clearly the better team.

Ohio State will try to shake off last night’s loss to Gonzaga, as they face Stanford tonight in the PK80 Invitational’s Motion Bracket.

Ohio State fans who stayed up late on Thanksgiving night weren’t rewarded for their endurance, as the Buckeyes suffered a 86-59 loss to Gonzaga in the first round of the PK80 Invitational in Portland. Early on, it looked like the Buckeyes might give Gonzaga a test, but the Zags took the lead for good in the middle of the first half and pulled away from Ohio State.

The Buckeyes held a 25-24 lead after a three-pointer from Musa Jallow near the middle of the first half, but the Zags would close the half on a 20-6 run to take a 44-31 lead into the break. The second half featured more of the same, with Ohio State failing to make the score any closer. Gonzaga attacked the Buckeyes from long range in the victory, hitting twice as many three-pointers as Ohio State did in the game.

Jae’Sean Tate and C.J. Jackson were Ohio State’s leading scorers in the game, each registering 12 points in the loss. The Buckeyes found the rims at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland unkind, as Ohio State hit just 34.5% of their field goal attempts, and making just six of their 20 attempts from three-point range.

Chris Holtmann’s team will have little time to feel sorry for themselves after suffering their first loss of the season, as the Buckeyes will be taking on a Stanford team that was just destroyed by Florida. The Cardinal had no answer for the offensive attack of the Gators, losing 108-87.

Florida left little doubt in the result early on, with the Gators scoring 58 points in the first half. Stanford couldn’t match the Gators from three-point range, as Florida hit 15 of their 22 attempts from behind the arc, while the Cardinal hit just seven of their 17. It’s not very often that a team will shoot 54% from the field, like Stanford did last night, and still lose by 21 points.

It has been quite a while since Ohio State and Stanford have squared off on the hardwood. The last time that the Buckeyes and the Cardinal played came all the way back in 1973, with Stanford winning 68-53 in the Kentucky Invitational in Lexington. All three previous meetings between the schools have come on neutral courts, with Stanford winning each.

This marks the second season of Stanford basketball under head coach Jerod Haase, who played his college ball at Kansas, and coached at UAB before moving to Palo Alto prior to last season. Haase was 14-17 in his first year with the school, and so far has posted a 3-3 record this season. Stanford is looking to get back in the mix in the Pac-12 and earn their first NCAA Tournament bid since 2014, when they advanced to the Sweet Sixteen under Johnny Dawkins.

Numbers to know

60

Ohio State can’t dwell on their performance against Gonzaga for too long, especially considering that the Zags went to the NCAA Championship Game last year. Ohio State shot just 34.5% from the field, making the Buckeyes the 60th consecutive opponent that Gonzaga has held to under 50% shooting from the field. The shooting performance by Ohio State was their worst of the season so far, with their previous lowest shooting percentage coming against Radford, where the Buckeyes shot 43.3% from the field.

1-7

Over the last two years, Ohio State has struggled mightily against teams in the Associated Press Top 25. After posting a 1-6 against Top 25 foes last year, the Buckeyes continued their woes lately against ranked teams with last night’s loss to Gonzaga. With games later in the year against the likes of North Carolina, Michigan State, and Minnesota, this is an area that Ohio State will have to correct if they look to build some momentum in Chris Holtmann’s first year in Columbus.

19

Tonight’s game against the Buckeyes might seem like a bit of a reprieve for Stanford. After hosting North Carolina in Palo Alto on Monday night, and facing Florida last night, it marked the first time in 19 years that Stanford has faced back-to-back opponents who have been ranked inside the Top 10 of the Associated Press poll. The last time that happened was in 1998 on the opposite coast, as Stanford played North Carolina in the preseason NIT in New York City, and followed that up with a trip to Washington D.C. to take on Maryland. Much like this year, the Cardinal lost both of those games.

Cast of characters

Ohio State

Jae’Sean Tate

When Ohio State tipped off last night, it marked Jae’Sean Tate’s 100th game with the school. After hitting all 10 of his shots in the win over Northeastern on Sunday, the senior found things to be a little tougher against Gonzaga, finishing with 12 points. Tate was able to pull down four rebounds in the loss, leaving him just seven away from 600 boards for his career.

Kaleb Wesson

The true freshman got his first start of his Ohio State career last night after it was announced that Micah Potter would be unable to play due to an ankle injury. Wesson gave Ohio State 25 tough minutes before fouling out. The Westerville product did most of his damage on the scoresheet at the free throw line, scoring six of his 10 points in the game at the charity stripe. Last night was the third time in the first four games that he has played this year in which the younger of the Wesson brothers has reached double figures in scoring.

Stanford

Reid Travis

The Buckeyes are going to have their work cut out for them as they try to slow down Stanford’s junior forward. Travis scored a team-high 23 points in last night’s loss to Florida, and is leading the Cardinal this year with 21.5 per game. The Minneapolis-native doesn’t take very many bad attempts, as he has shot at least 50% from the field in five of Stanford’s six contests this season. Travis had attempted at least 10 free throws in four of Stanford’s six games this year, and he makes the majority of those, averaging 74.1% from the charity stripe.

Michael Humphrey

The senior forward has teamed with Travis to create a dangerous duo down low for Stanford. While Humphrey might not have quite the scoring prowess that Travis does, he does more work on the boards for the Cardinal. Humphrey has recorded three double-doubles on the year, with his best performance of the season coming earlier in the year against Pacific, where he scored 26 points and pulled down 18 rebounds. Last night Humphrey was limited to just 18 minutes in the blowout to Florida, scoring 10 points.

Saturday marks the 99th consecutive season the Buckeyes and Wolverines will square off. But for a five-year period the game stopped. Why?

Saturday marks the 99th consecutive year that the Buckeyes and Wolverines have squared off on the football field. But the series has not always thrived — for a five-year period a century ago the game wasn’t played.

Despite what you might assume, it wasn’t because of war — though there was, of course, war. It wasn’t because of global pandemics — though there, of course, was that too. And while player safety concerns were acute in the minds of administrators, that wasn’t the reason either. No. The ill that stopped the series from advancing was beyond the reach of injuries, microbes, or the Guns of August. It was the result of conference realignment.

There was no Big Ten at the turn of the 20th century — its forerunner was the Western Conference. And Ohio State and Michigan were in different leagues. This was a literal truth — OSU was an independent and Michigan was a member of the Western Conference. The class and caliber of talent was also on a different level.

When the Buckeyes took the field against the Fielding Yost coached Wolverines in Columbus in 1901, OSU was dispatched 21-0. In a measure of Michigan’s dominance at the time, that blowout win was the closest game the Wolverines would play all season. Michigan’s “Point-a-Minute” team was a force that outscored opponents 550 to zero as they romped to an 11-0 record.

The Pop Warner coached Carlisle Indian Industrial School was among Michigan’s victims that season, downed 22-0. And poor Buffalo wouldn’t soon forget the 128-0 loss the men of Maize and Blue hung on them. From 1901-1904, Michigan would not lose under Yost — running up a 43-0-1 record.

With the sport of college football more popular than ever, and revenue coming in, Western Conference officials met to determine the future direction of the game. Walking away, they established several rules that all schools had to live by — from banning the training table, to stipulating coaches be members of the faculty. Yost was not faculty, and while the rules worked for conference powers, they did not for Michigan. Soon, the Wolverines were out of the conference. The move was national news, the April 14, 1907 New York Times headline read: “CONFERENCE OUSTS MICHIGAN; Severs Relations with University for Non-Observance of Rules.”

That news was also in many ways a very good development for Ohio State — and the formative years of the rivalry. As an independent, Michigan was banned from playing schools in the Western conference. That worked well for OSU — the Buckeyes were part of the Ohio Athletic Conference — and made for a ready opponent (if not always a competitive one). During Michigan’s run as an independent, they would square off with Ohio State every year from 1907 to 1912. Michigan would win all of those games, save for one draw — building their record to a dominating 12 wins, 0 losses and 2 ties all-time against the Buckeyes.

When Ohio State joined the Western Conference in 1913 — there was a ceasefire in the lopsided series with the Wolverines. With OSU a member of the conference, and Michigan still banned from playing teams in the Western Conference, for five years — from 1913-17 — there was no Ohio State-Michigan game. But the same forces of conference realignment that stopped the series, also jump-started it again. Michigan re-joined the Western Conference and the rivalry resumed in 1918. The addition of the Wolverines in the Western Conference gave the conference ten teams, and a new shorthand nickname — the “Big Ten.”

The Wolverines would soon find that much more than the conference name had changed. Ohio State’s cuddly bear cub of a football program that Michigan had kicked around had grown into an ill-tempered grizzly. Under the guidance of OSU coach John Wilce, eventual three-time All-American Chic Harley’s runs dazzled overflow crowds at Ohio Field. The Buckeyes would claim their first Western Conference championship in 1916, repeating the feat in 1917.

OSU was an emerging power, but there were bigger global forces at play. Harley and many key players at Ohio State, and around the country, set out to serve in World War I during the 1918 season. In 1919, after the war ended and troops came home, Ohio State and Michigan’s programs returned to full strength — and the Buckeyes would win the next three contests in the series. The wins in 1919, 1920, and 1921 gave the Buckeyes their first ever taste of victory against Michigan — and ended OSU’s 15-game winless streak against the Wolverines in the all-time series.

And these Buckeyes were winning against good Michigan teams. The 1921 game, a 14-0 Buckeye win in Ann Arbor would be Michigan’s only loss that season. The Maize and Blue returned the favor the next season in 1922, blanking the Buckeyes 19-0 at the dedication game of Ohio Stadium.

Today, that five-year ceasefire stands as a largely forgotten chapter in a rivalry that is now the eighth longest continuous series in FBS. It was clear that the Western Conference that Michigan left was much different than the one that it rejoined a decade later. Yost’s “Champions of the West” found they had a new rival. A rivalry that was only just getting started.

Ohio State travels to Ann Arbor as they look to extend their winning streak to six in a row against the Wolverines.

Last week ATS: 5-7 (3-2 National, 2-5 B1G)

Season ATS: 78-84-4 (35-34-2 National, 43-50-2 B1G)

If you missed yesterday’s national picks, there’s a chance you might have missed a couple Friday picks. Don’t worry, there are still a number of juicy plays for Saturday you can find here.

B1G games (All games Saturday unless otherwise noted):

Iowa (-4) v. Nebraska - 4:00 PM EST - Friday 11/24 4:00 PM EST - FS1

Both of these teams are a mess right now. Iowa has scored just 29 points in two games since dropping 55 points on Ohio State. Nathan Stanley will look for a big performance to cap off a regular season in which he has thrown 23 touchdowns and just six interceptions to this point.

That said, Nebraska is an even bigger dumpster fire, having allowed at least 50 points in three of their last five games. Last week the Cornhuskers made the score look somewhat respectable against Penn State, but the game wasn’t really that close. Tanner Lee threw for 399 yards and three touchdowns, but a good chunk of those came in garbage time.

Nebraska fans will probably be paying more attention to the South Florida/UCF game, so they can get a look at who they are hoping will be their next head coach, Scott Frost. I am trying to find a reason to take Nebraska in this spot, but I just can’t trust myself to back such a terrible defense.

Iowa 31, Nebraska 20

Indiana v. Purdue (-3) - 12:00 PM EST - ESPN2

The battle for the Old Oaken Bucket has a little more at stake this year, with the winner becoming bowl eligible. The Hoosiers have won their last two games, but those wins have come against Illinois and Rutgers, so not exactly the stiffest of competition. Richard Lagow has put up solid numbers since returning as starting quarterback for Indiana.

Last week Purdue surprised a lot of people by going into Kinnick and beating Iowa. Boilermaker quarterback Elijah Sindelar is sorta like a junior Lagow. The two quarterbacks have fought off competition for their starting jobs, and put up similar numbers this year.

Even though I like where Jeff Brohm has the Purdue program headed, I think Indiana is just a slightly more complete team at this point. The Hoosiers can run the football a little better, and have a little more to offer on defense than Purdue at this point. This game will likely come down to the wire, but Indiana wins late in enemy territory.

Indiana 30, Purdue 27

No. 5 Wisconsin (-17) v. Minnesota - 3:30 PM EST - ABC

Not only will this be the 127th meeting in the most-played rivalry between FBS schools, but the Badgers and Golden Gophers play for Paul Bunyan’s Axe. Wisconsin has dominated the rivalry recently, winning the last 13 meetings.

The Badgers should easily make it 14 over Minnesota on Saturday. After scoring 54 points two weeks ago, the Golden Gophers were shutout last week against Northwestern. It’s hard to imagine Minnesota finding much on offense this week against one of the toughest defenses in the country. The Golden Gophers can’t pass at all, and they’ll have even more trouble moving the football through the air after losing leading receiver Tyler Johnson to a broken hand.

I’m a little nervous that the Badgers might be looking ahead to next week’s Big Ten Championship Game at Ohio State, but Paul Chryst knows his team has no room for error this week, as even one loss would destroy any College Football Playoff hopes.

Jonathan Taylor has another big game as Wisconsin runs all over the Golden Gophers.

Wisconsin 44, Minnesota 14

No. 10 Penn State (-22) v, Maryland - 3:30 PM EST - Big Ten Network

Even though Saquon Barkley has said he won’t skip Penn State’s bowl game, you have to wonder if he might change his mind depending on where the Nittany Lions get sent. It’d be hard to blame the running back if he wanted to avoid getting himself hurt in what will likely be a meaningless game for Penn State.

Tomorrow afternoon should see big performances from Barkley and quarterback Trace McSorley, who will both be playing their final regular season game for the Nittany Lions. Luckily the duo will get to pad their career stats by taking on a Maryland team that has been ravaged by injury.

Maryland has been a weird team to try and predict, especially with all of the injuries they have suffered. After getting steamrolled by Michigan a couple of weeks ago, last Saturday the Terrapins were able to secure a cover against the Spartans in the fourth quarter. However, Maryland won’t have the snow they saw in East Lansing last week to help them. The Nittany Lions have little problem in College Park.

Penn State 45, Maryland 17

No. 16 Michigan State (-13.5) v. Rutgers - 4:00 PM EST - FOX

Can we just say first team to score in this game wins? If you like defense, this is the game for you. Brian Lewerke threw for just 20 yards in last week’s 17-7 win over Maryland, but at least the Spartans had three players rush for at least 60 yards in the victory, with L.J. Scott leading the way with 149 yards.

After winning three of four games during the middle of the season, Rutgers has fallen back down to earth, getting outscored 76-6 in its last two games. It’s hard to see the struggling Rutgers offense finding any holes against a solid Michigan State defense. I can’t say I’m expecting a ton out of Michigan State against Chris Ash’s defense, but the Spartans do just enough to cover.

Michigan State 23, Rutgers 7

No. 22 Northwestern (-16.5) v. Illinois - 4:00 PM EST - FS1

We saw just how bad Illinois was last week. The Fighting Illini have a lot of youth on their roster right now, which could turn into quality talent, but it’s really, really tough to watch at this point.

Running back Justin Jackson became just the second Big Ten running back to surpass 1,000 yards rushing in each of his four seasons, with Wisconsin Heisman Trophy winner Ron Dayne being the only other player to accomplish that feat. Jackson and the Wildcats run all over Illinois as the Wildcats easily win their seventh game in a row.

Northwestern 34, Illinois 10

No. 9 Ohio State (-12) v. Michigan - 12:00 PM EST - FOX

Sometimes we take it for granted, but we really do have things pretty good as Ohio State fans. The Buckeyes have won 14 of 16 against That Team Up North (and yes I’m counting the vacated game in 2010 since we all saw what happened in Columbus), and Ohio State has come into the last six meetings with the Wolverines ranked inside the Top 10.

If Ohio State beats Michigan tomorrow, J.T. Barrett will add to his legacy and become the first Ohio State starting quarterback to beat the Wolverines four times. The Buckeyes are going to need Barrett to play a lot better than the senior did in losses to Oklahoma and Iowa earlier in the year, when Ohio State abandoned the run and asked Barrett to shoulder more of the load.

At QB for the Wolverines, Michigan might bring one of their key jingling fans out of the crowd to start at quarterback on Saturday. It is not known if Brandon Peters or John O’Korn is going to start at quarterback for the Wolverines, but I really don’t think it’ll matter. Michigan can’t do much through the air, and good defenses are able to stop the run, because they don’t have to respect the Michigan passing game all that much.

Whether it be Peters or O’Korn taking the snaps for the Wolverines, they’ll be harassed all day by the talented Ohio State defensive line. Expect big days from Nick Bosa and Sam Hubbard, as they put plenty of pressure on the quarterback. Ohio State’s linebackers will also continue their improved play over the last few weeks after getting decimated by Iowa.

Michigan has one of the better defenses in the country, but they have gotten to feast a lot this year on offenses that aren’t very dynamic. Ohio State can hurt teams both through the air, and on the ground with the tandem of J.K. Dobbins and Mike Weber.

I’m not going to say the beatdown is going to be quite as bad, but I expect this game to play out a bit like Michigan’s loss to Penn State back in October. The Wolverines just won’t be able to keep pace with Ohio State’s offense. I can’t say I’m loving picking “The Game” to be a bit of a snoozer on the scoreboard, but Ohio State gets in another strong performance before the Big Ten title game.

Ohio State 35, Michigan 17
