From the Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award to Defensive Rookie of the Year, several Buckeyes are vying for some recognition for the 2017 season.

Ohio State is now officially the champion of the Big Ten East, and will face off against Wisconsin for the conference title. Once the rainy action from Saturday’s Senior Day had dissipated, focus shifted to Beat Michigan Week. While Columbus started preparing to take on the Wolverines, former Ohio State players in the NFL continued their campaigns for postseason honors.

From the Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award to Defensive Rookie of the Year, there should be many Buckeyes receiving some hardware at the end of the season. It’s not just individual awards either, fan voting is now open for the 2018 Pro Bowl, and there are 20 Buckeyes you can vote for on the ballot.

Here’s how Buckeyes in the NFL fared in Week 11:

Sunday Night Football

One of the NFL’s biggest rivalries went down on primetime in Week 11 on Sunday Night Football when the Dallas Cowboys (Noah Brown, Mike Nugent, Rod Smith — still no Ezekiel Elliott) hosted the Philadelphia Eagles (Malcolm Jenkins). The matchup was filled with inconsistent play from both teams early on, but the Eagles came out of halftime hungry, and they feasted, winning 37-9.

After the Cowboys offense struggled to get things going a couple plays into their second-drive, they got the ball to rookie Noah Brown for a 14-yard first down. That was the only catch for the Buckeye wideout on Sunday, but he did have a couple key blocks in a tough game for Dallas. With Elliott suspended, another Buckeyes rusher, Rod Smith, was expected to see some additional touches. In Week 11, he had eight carries for 11 yards — but the Cowboys offense has a whole didn’t do much.

In an ode to his time at Ohio State, kicker Mike Nugent was the sole reason Dallas put any points on the board Sunday, making 3-of-3 field goal kicks for nine points.

The Eagles already lead the NFC East — and the entire league for the matter — and are on their way to a postseason run that could end up resembling their 2004 Super Bowl stretch. Leading the team, both on the field and in the locker room, Buckeye Malcolm Jenkins has been a positive contributor to the Philadelphia secondary, the national protest conversation and every community in which he’s played, including Columbus.

Heading into Week 11’s rivalry game, Jenkins had claimed 47 total tackles (42 solo) — with a game-high 10 tackles against Washington in late-October — along with five pass breakups and one sack. On Sunday, he recorded his first interception of the 2017 season, along with four total tackles and two pass breakups.

Malcolm in the middle. #Eagles ball.#FlyEaglesFly pic.twitter.com/v3d27rK4IW

— Philadelphia Eagles (@Eagles) November 20, 2017

His stat line hasn’t been particularly noteworthy this season, but that’s where box-score analysis can be misleading. Jenkins flies all over the field and is an absolute terror on the outside. More than that, he leads a very young group of defensive backs and safeties for the Eagles, and his tutelage has made a lot of those guys better throughout the season. Jenkins lines up at four different positions for the Eagles secondary and rarely misses a snap.

I would have to say @MalcolmJenkins !!! I sat beside him in meetings everyday. I learned a lot. He's the vocal leader, he knows the entire defense, and plays with so much passion and energy. He also brings the same energy to practice day in and day out

Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award

The nominees for the fourth annual Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award were announced earlier in the week, and the Steelers’ selection was former Buckeye DE Cameron Heyward.

Players are chosen for exemplifying outstanding sportsmanship on the field. The award is presented each year to an NFL player who best demonstrates the qualities of on-field sportsmanship, including fair play, respect for the game and opponents, and integrity in competition.

The winner will be announced during the NFL Honors show on Saturday, February 3 on NBC (the night before Super Bowl LII). The winner will receive a $25,000 donation from the NFL Foundation to a charity of his choice and a trophy.

Heyward continues to be a pillar for the Steelers defense, just this week claiming his second two-sack game of the season on Thursday night against the Titans. Not only did he help Pittsburgh have their first 4 interception, 5 sack game since 1984, but he now has a total of 7.0 sacks on the season — along with 32 total tackles, five stuffs and one forced fumble.

Lattimore DROY?

Just a year after another Buckeye claimed the Defensive Rookie of the Year postseason honor -- Joey Bosa — the list of candidates once again includes a former Ohio State player: Marshon Lattimore.

Contributing to one of the more productive rookie classes in the NFL this season, according to Danny Kelly of The Ringer, New Orleans’ first-round draft pick has already proven himself to be worth the top choice. In just over half of a season in the league, Lattimore has earned a reputation as one of the better shutdown corners in the NFL, forcing opposing quarterbacks to a combined 42.3 passer rating when targeting receivers covered by the Buckeye rookie.

You know about what Marshon Lattimore has done in coverage, but how about as a tackler?

Last year at Ohio State he missed zero of the solo tackles he attempted.

This year with the #Saints, Lattimore hasn't missed a tackle yet and leads the team in solo tackles with 31.

— Jon Ledyard (@LedyardNFLDraft) November 16, 2017
Play of the Week

Joey Bosa

(I might as well re-name this section Bosa sack of the Week.) It’s Week 11, and with several records already surpassed, and having already sent some gear to Canton for display at the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Joey Bosa continues to terrorize quarterbacks. The Buckeye didn’t just get another sack on Sunday against Buffalo, he also forced a fumble setting up a scoop and score by his teammate to extend their lead.

Other Notables

Patriots look like Ohio State did yesterday....That makes the Raiders the Fighting Illini...

— Steve Levy (@espnSteveLevy) November 19, 2017
  • Saints safety Vonn Bell had a career-high 13 total tackles in Sunday’s overtime win against Washington — not to mention, a sack and forced fumble.
  • Just two weeks after being pulled up to the active roster, the Indianapolis Colts waived second-year linebacker Joshua Perry — the Buckeye was able to make it to Ohio Stadium on Saturday though, for Senior Day, so that’s a little but of a silver lining.
  • Panthers’ safety Kurt Coleman was fined just under $25k by the league for his Week 9 hit against Devonte Freeman, but the Buckeye plans to appeal.
  • Speaking of appeal... the Ezekiel Elliott suspension-saga is now over. The running back phenom has decided to drop his appeal and serve the remaining games under his six-game suspension. He’ll be back on the field for the Dallas Cowboys in Week 16 against the Seahawks.
Injury Report and Inactives

  • Bad news for Buckeye rookie Curtis Samuel. After a slow start to his NFL career with the Carolina Panthers, thanks to lingering injuries, he’s now out for the remainder for the year after suffering ligament damage in his left ankle during last week’s game.
  • After missing most of the season, the Oakland Raiders finally placed Gareon Conley on IR this week, due to a lingering shin injury that just wouldn’t shake.
  • Washington listed Terrelle Pryor Sr. as inactive on Sunday; the receiver had been having issues with ankles throughout the week, leading up to the missed game. Also out this week, was Broncos tight end Jeff Heuerman, who missed practice during the week with an knee injury.
  • Giants CB Eli Apple was inactive in Week 11, as he tended to his Mom, Annie Apple, following brain surgery this week. (We’re wishing the fabulous Annie a speedy recovery!)

Tate set a career high for scoring, while Keita Bates-Diop scored in double figures.

The Chris Holtmann era is off to a running start, as the Ohio State Buckeyes won their latest contest against the Northeastern Huskies, 80-55.

With 10,779 in attendance, those spectators witnessed the Scarlet and Gray get out to a 4-0 to start to the season, courtesy of a strong first half performance from the leaders on the team.

Jae’Sean Tate made all 10 of his shots, and set a career high in scoring with 24 points. Keita Bates-Diop wasn’t too far behind Tate in the scoring category, ending the game with 19 points. Bates-Diop didn’t reach a double-double mark this time around, but he ended with seven rebounds—enough to lead the team.

While those two flashed their scoring prowess, they weren’t the only ones to hit double figures. C.J. Jackson also eclipsed the double-digit scoring mark with 10 points. Additionally, Jackson put three assists and three rebounds on the stat sheet, the same amount as Tate.

As a team, Ohio State shot 50 percent from the field, making 28 of their 56 shots; from three-point range, the Buckeyes weren’t as successful, making just 20 percent of their shots from beyond the arc (3-of-15).

Northeastern made 36 percent of the shots, ending the game 20-of-56 from the field. Combined with 16 turnovers, the Huskies were doomed. Ohio State converted those turnovers for 22 points.

Another place where the Scarlet and Gray dominated in was in the paint. Over half (48) of the Buckeyes’ points came from that region.

Tate played a huge role in getting the Buckeyes out front early, as he was responsible for 11 of the first 13 points, and opened up the game with 5-of-5 shooting. It took only 39 seconds for Tate to score on his first shot (a layup). To get that shot, Keita Bates-Diop stole the ball away from guard Devon Begley.

Northeastern answered back around a minute later to even the score at 2-2, but Tate buried a jumper 20 seconds after the Huskies knotted the game. Being tied at 2-2 would be the closest Northeastern would be to leading Ohio State. Tate’s second shot opened up a 13-0 scoring run for the Buckeyes, and by the 13:55 mark in the first half, the Scarlet and Gray held a 15-2 lead.

Donnell Gresham pulled the Huskies to within 10 after hitting a pair of free throws and a three-pointer. For the first half, Gresham led his team with 11 points, with nine of those coming off three-point shots.

At the 9:50 mark of the first half, OSU was about to show their breakaway ability. A Bates-Diop make and Kaleb Wesson dunk ignited another Buckeye scoring spree. This time around, Holtmann’s crew scored 15 unanswered points—which was broken up by a Gresham three.

With a 36-12 lead at the 5:12 mark in the half, OSU continued to score points via free throws. Wesson, Bates-Diop and C.J. Jackson chipped in late with their freebie makes. By halftime, the Buckeyes lead was out to 47-17.

Ohio State shot 63 percent from the field in the first half on 17-of-27 shooting from the field. In comparison, Northeastern made just 6 of their 28 shots (21 percent).

Tate and Bates-Diop were tied for most points scored in the half at 15. Bates-Diop led the rebounding front with four; Andrew Dakich had the most assists in the half with three.

In the second half, turnovers continued to plague the Huskies. In the first five minutes after the break, they committed three turnovers—with one of them leading to another Tate basket.

At this point, Tate swished on his first eight shots, and continued that trend to after the first media timeout.

Another Huskies’ scoring drought—this one lasting a little more than three minutes—kept them from chipping into OSU’s lead. Ohio State went back to having a 30-point plus lead on the visitors at the 13-minute mark of the half.

But, at the halfway point, the Huskies got their offense going, hitting five shots within seven attempts. Combine that with the Buckeyes going on a three-minute scoring drought and missing five straight shots, and the visitors were able to close the gap to 63-37.

For about a five-minute stretch, Northeastern played their best basketball. However, with such a deep deficit, it wasn’t even enough to get within 15 points of Ohio State’s lead.

Up next for Ohio State will be the national runner-ups, the Gonzaga Bulldogs. The teams will tip off in Portland, Ore., on Nov. 24 at 12:30 a.m.

The Buckeyes-Bulldogs contest will be broadcast on ESPN2, and is part of the PK80-Phil Knight invitational.

The seniors got their win, and Illibuck stays in Columbus. It was a good day to be a Buckeye.

If Forrest Gump was sitting in either A-deck or C-deck at Ohio Stadium during Saturday’s game against Illinois, he might’ve reused the same line about how the rain seemed like it was coming from all directions.

For most of the second half, rain was constantly pelting the field of the play. In years past, the rain on Senior Day has been a bad omen. Back in 2015, the Ohio State Buckeyes rolled into their last home game of the season with a showdown against Michigan State. Bad weather in that contest led to OSU not utilizing their offense to its potential, and that would be enough to cost the Buckeyes a win—as well as a trip to a Big Ten Championship and possible playoff berth.

Luckily, the same thing didn’t happen on Saturday. Yes, the rain was torrential, but the Fighting Illini were, well, uh, not as good as that Spartan team was a couple years ago.

Ohio State demolished Illinois, 52-14, solidifying a Big Ten East Division crown. But in that win, what all did we learn about this OSU team?

When it’s finally over, we’re gonna miss J.T. Barrett

At times this season, the popular chorus being sung amongst OSU fans, especially when times were rocky and rough, was to have a switch at quarterback. When Oklahoma scored a victory over Ohio State, a vocal social media following wanted Dwayne Haskins in as the new Buckeye QB—even though Barrett is the most prolific passer in school history.

It’s not over yet, but Barrett only has a handful of games left in his OSU career; yesterday, however, was his last game inside Ohio Stadium. Barrett was the last of the 19 seniors to be recognized, and, arguably, he received the loudest ovation from the crowd.

And in typical Barrett fashion, he broke some more records.

Going 11-of-19 for 142 passing yards and two touchdowns, the Wichita Falls, Texas native crossed the milestone of throwing 100 career TDs. He got there courtesy of a 11-yard pass to wide receiver Binjimen Victor.

Call him Mr. .

J.T. Barrett keeps passing milestones, as he hits the 100-TD pass mark in his Buckeyes career: pic.twitter.com/amkpX8rj8F

— Big Ten Network (@BigTenNetwork) November 18, 2017

On the ground, Barrett rushed for 33 yards on five carries, scoring once. Within those 33 yards, he passed Braxton Miller for the most rushing yards by a Buckeye quarterback.

It seems like Barrett’s been the Buckeye QB forever. His first start against Navy, back in the 2014 season, seems so long ago. Barrett was part of the same recruiting class as Christian Hackenberg, who went on to become the Penn State quarterback before Trace McSorley took over.

While he may be done playing inside The ‘Shoe, the Buckeyes and Barrett have at least three more games left on the slate: next week against Michigan, the Big Ten Championship, and whatever bowl game they get selected to.

Could there be a national championship game on the horizon for this squad? Possibly, but they’ll need some help.

Either way, it’s been a great run with Barrett as signal caller. The Illinois victory puts his total win/loss record to 35-6 as starting quarterback. He’s got his name etched on 36 Big Ten or school records, which is astounding when you actually sit down and think about it.

To me, he’s on the Mount Rushmore of Ohio State QBs, if there was such a thing. (Come to think about it, if there was one, I would have Barrett, Troy Smith, Rex Kern and Craig Krenzel on my Mount Rushmore of all-time Buckeye quarterbacks.)

Like the spot, SB Nation’s Matt Brown wrote a very good piece reflecting on Barrett, and how he’ll be remembered.

Mike Weber is out here running like The Flash

For the second straight week, Mike Weber has shown bursts of speed. Like, he showed speed I didn’t know he had. Against the Illini, the Detroit native led the Buckeyes in rushing with 108 yards on 11 carries. He also found the endzone twice, and broke off a 43-yard rush.

Great to see Weber finally looking healthy. That's his 3rd 40-plus yard touchdown run in the last two weeks. pic.twitter.com/Cs3FssfKld

— Land-Grant Holy Land (@Landgrant33) November 18, 2017

Last season, Weber was a power back; he was the guy you brought in for those tough yards on the ground. This season, that trend continued right up until last week.

Was this week’s performance better than last week? I would say no. (Then again, how many sequels are actually better than the first performance?) Michigan State was a good team, and Weber ran right through them; Illinois is a terri—uh, not so good of a team, and after seeing what he could do versus the Spartans, the same sort of ballpark expectations were on the table—and Weber delivered.

However, if Weber continues the hot streak against Michigan and Wisconsin, fully expect rumors of a jump to the NFL.

Don’t forget about Parris Campbell

With the first team starters, the Buckeyes moved the ball down the field. That’s expected, though. But, with Michigan looming, the star power needs to be out in full force, as all bets are off when it comes to playing rivals. Especially when it comes to playing your archrival on the road, you don’t know how things will shake out.

Weber has proven to be just as big of a threat on the ground as J.K. Dobbins, but there’s another speedster that will help stretch the field: Parris Campbell.

Campbell is the guy for screen passes out in the flat, but against Illinois, he gave us a new highlight for how he can stretch the field.

Not sure if Parris Campbell faked out the camera man or the Illinois defenders worse pic.twitter.com/vVKhxu7iUF

— Land-Grant Holy Land (@Landgrant33) November 18, 2017

The rush in the highlight was Campbell’s only one for the game. However, it went for a cool 44 yards, and was the longest run of the afternoon/evening for the home team. On the receiving end, Campbell led all receivers in receiving yards (59) on just three catches.

If OSU was going to break open some East-West play calls next Saturday, Campbell is the obvious choice. By having Campbell, especially at full health, this offense shouldn’t have too much of a problem moving the chains in Ann Arbor.

Illinois is still a work in progress

Normally, these ‘things we learned’ posts attempt to delve into the insights from the latest Buckeye outing. In the early parts of the season, we progressively learned what this team was capable of; and in the losses, we tried to come up with an understanding for why it happened and what went wrong.

But this Illinois game was the trickiest game of the season. The main reason being that the Illini were, by far, the worst opponent on Ohio State’s schedule. Throughout the season, 16 freshman were thrust into starting roles, and the Illini’s last win against Western Kentucky on Sept. 9 wasn’t actually a runaway victory. The Illini walked into this game 2-8 on the season, so the expectations of an upset against the Buckeyes would’ve come just short of being delusional.

Since last week, we didn’t really collect new intel on the Buckeye defense, mostly because the Illini offense wasn’t that good to begin with. Jeff George Jr., who led the Illini in passing this season, didn’t play in Columbus, and Chayce Crouch, who ended up starting, threw 16 yards on 4-of-14 passing.

On the ground, Illinois only had 86 total yards amongst four rushers. In comparison, Mike Weber had over 86 yards in the first half.

It was a no good, terribl, very bad day for Illinois football inside Ohio Stadium. They won’t play Ohio State again until 2020, meaning that the Illibuck is staying the Ohio’s capital city for the foreseeable future. Maybe then they’ll be able to get back on track to becoming a bowl contender for the Big Ten.

Before heading out to Portland for the PK80 Invitational, Ohio State look to stay undefeated, as they’ll host Northeastern this afternoon at Value City Arena.

After beating Texas Southern 82-64 on Thursday night, Ohio State looks to stay unbeaten before they hit the road for the first time this year. This afternoon’s contest against Northeastern is one of the non-bracketed games of the PK80 Invitational. Following today’s game against the Huskies, Ohio State will head to Portland for three games in four days starting on Thursday.

While Ohio State was in control for most of Thursday night’s game against Texas Southern, the Buckeyes did have to fend off a charge from the Tigers in the second half. Early in the second half, Ohio State was ahead by 18 points following a Keita Bates-Diop layup, but Mike Davis’ squad started to chip away at the lead after that bucket. Eventually Texas Southern was trailing by just two points with under seven minutes to go, but that was as close as the Tigers would get, as Ohio State rattled off 13-straight points to erase any doubt in the result.

Keita Bates-Diop continued his torrid start to the season, recording his third-straight double-double. The last Buckeye to start the season with three straight double-doubles was Evan Turner in 2009. Ohio State needed everything they got from Bates-Diop on Thursday, as freshman Kaleb Wesson was suspended due to failure to meet team expectations.

Ohio State has posted a 9-2 record against teams currently in the Colonial Athletic Association, but one of those losses did come to Northeastern. In 1985, the Buckeyes and Huskies met in East Rutherford, New Jersey, with Northeastern squeaking out a 76-74 win. The Buckeyes last played a team from the CAA back in 2014, when they beat James Madison 73-56 in the Buckeye Classic in Columbus.

It would be hard to blame the Huskies if they came into this afternoon’s game a little bit sluggish. On Friday night, Northeastern suffered their first loss of the season, falling to Stanford 73-59 in Palo Alto. The Huskies trailed by as many as 19 points in the second half, but an 11-0 run slashed the deficit to just two with five minutes to go, but that was as close as Northeastern would get. Sophomore Donnell Greshman Jr. came off the bench and scored a team-high 15 points in the loss.

Head coach Bill Coen is in his 12th year as Northeastern’s head coach, but during his time with the school the Huskies have only made the NCAA Tournament once. In 2015, Northeastern won the CAA Tournament, and put a scare into Notre Dame before the Fighting Irish eventually prevailed 69-65 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. During the 2014-15 season, Northeastern won 23 games, which is the most they’ve won under Coen. Since the tournament appearance, Northeastern posted an 18-15 record during the 2015-16 season, and a 15-16 record last year.

Numbers to know

9

There are a couple reasons why nine was such an important number for Ohio State in their last game. Not only did C.J. Jackson tie his career-high by dishing out nine assists in the win over Texas Southern, but the Buckeyes hit a season-high nine three-pointers on Thursday night. Ohio State’s previous season-high from behind the arc came last Sunday when the Buckeyes hit eight three-pointers against Radford.

16.7

Ohio State is finding success because of the way that they are rebounding the basketball so far this season. The Buckeyes are 14th in the country with a +16.7 rebounding margin. A big chunk of that average rebounding margin came in the season opener against Robert Morris when the Buckeyes out-rebounded the Colonials by 29. Since then Ohio State recorded 12 more rebounds than Radford last Sunday, and nine more rebounds than Texas Southern on Thursday night. Keita Bates-Diop is leading Ohio State with 11 rebounds per game.

10

Northeastern comes into this afternoon’s game with no players averaging 10 points per game. Instead of having a couple players who can fill it up on the score sheet, the Huskies spread the wealth, with seven players averaging at least seven points per game. The highest point total a Northeastern player has had during a game this season has been 15 points, which Tomas Murphy scored in the season-opening win against Boston University, and Donnell Greshman Jr. matched in the loss to Stanford on Friday.

Cast of characters

Ohio State

Jae’Sean Tate

The senior continued his rise up the Ohio State all-time scoring list on Thursday night, with his 17 points moving Tate up to 40th place with 1,131 points. If Tate is able to match the 17 points he scored against Texas Southern, he’ll pass not only the 1,139 career points that Jamaal Brown scored, but also the 1,147 points Frank Howard scored during his Buckeye career. Tate also added seven rebounds against the Tigers, and is just 16 rebounds away from 600 boards for his career.

Micah Potter

The Buckeyes got a boost down low with the performance from Micah Potter on Thursday night. The sophomore bested his previous career high of 13 points, which he posted last season against N.C. Central, by scoring 17 points against Texas Southern. Potter could be in store for another big game today, as Northeastern had some trouble dealing with the size Stanford threw at them on Friday night.

Northeastern

Devon Begley

The guard is the lone senior on Northeastern’s roster. Last year Begley was named to the CAA All-Defensive Team after leading the conference with 48 steals. The senior is currently Northeastern’s leading scorer, averaging 9.3 points per game. Begley will be looking to rebound after hitting just two of his 11 field goal attempts against Stanford.

Tomas Murphy

The freshman forward from Rhode Island is already putting up strong numbers in his first year on campus. Murphy’s brother is Alex Murphy, a transfer from Duke and Florida, who averaged 14 points per game last year for the Huskies before graduating. Following his first two games of the year, Murphy was named CAA Rookie of the Week for his performances against Boston and Wentworth.

It’s not been a good season for the Fighting Illini.

COLUMBUS, Ohio—Okay, to be fair, this was never expected to be close.

Before kickoff, the line for the Ohio State-Illinois game had crept north of 40 points, a staggering number for any regular season contest, let alone an actual Big Ten game. S&P+ gave Illinois just a 3 percent chance of winning.

And just a few minutes after the opening kickoff, it wasn’t hard to see why.

The Buckeyes clobbered Illinois on Saturday. If it wasn’t for horrible weather, the margin probably would have been much worse. All of that isn’t particularly noteworthy.

But how Ohio State did it, and exactly where Illinois is right now, is interesting.

The Big Ten has some lousy teams in it this year, but if you squint, you can talk yourself into a potential pathway for improvement. Maryland has been recruiting better than nearly anybody in the Big Ten West, and if they can keep a quarterback upright for an entire season, it’s not hard to imagine them being solid. Rutgers and Indiana both have boasted above average defensive play at times this season. Purdue has a new coach, an exciting offense, and quickly rose to respectability.

But it’s really hard to talk yourself into anything with Illinois right now.

There’s no sugarcoating it. This Illinois team is really, really bad. Heading into yesterday’s game, Illinois’ S&P+ ranking (112) was worse than any other team on Ohio State’s schedule, and that includes UNLV, a historically hapless program that lost to Howard (!) earlier in the year.

They weren’t really even above average in any meaningful statistical category, and that lack of identity showed against Ohio State. Chance Crouch, a central Ohio kid himself, was 4-of-14 for a paltry 16 yards, never looking close to comfortable, as the Illini offensive line was overwhelmed almost from go. Almost every meaningful offensive play, and there weren’t many, came from underclassmen. Illinois couldn’t muster a single first down until late in the second quarter, after six consecutive three and outs.

The defense, which had managed to hold four teams in a row under 30 points, was overwhelmed at the point of attack as well, allowing the Buckeyes to gobble up 7 yards a carry basically whenever they wanted, and where one mistimed tackle would lead to a 30 yard gain. With an offense that wasn’t able to provide any support, any defensive gains quickly wilted. It was 28-0 after the first quarter, and honestly, it really could have been worse.

Look, when you’re on the road against a team with powerhouse talent, and you’re young and inconsistent, hey, sometimes you take your licks. And that’s basically how this series has gone recently, trophy game and all. Illinois hasn’t beaten Ohio State since 2007, and they’ve only kept the margin to 10 points or less just once over the last decade. It’s arguably been the least competitive series in recent memory among original Big Ten members.

At first glance, it seems like that shouldn’t be the case, no? But since that Rose Bowl bid in 2007, Illinois hasn’t won more than seven games in a season. They’ve made only three bowl games, none of any real import, and have struggled with development, leadership, and a real offensive identity.

It seemed like the entire department may have turned a corner with the hire of new athletic director Josh Whitman last year, but his major bet, the hire of Lovie Smith, hasn’t come close to paying dividends, and because of the financial risk, it’s not like they can cut bait this year, even though recruiting reinforcements aren’t exactly coming, at least in this class.

Maybe the Smith hire will somehow work out in the end. I still think, in retrospect, it was a very defensible move, and coming in and immediately dismissing Bill Cubit was, in my humble opinion, a good and bold decision, showing that Illinois had higher ambitions than the Heart of Dallas Bowl...maybe, if they got the right divisional crossover games.

But for programs that haven’t enjoyed any real football consistency since I was born, that margin of error is very small.

Illinois isn’t on Ohio State’s schedule again until 2020, much to the chagrin of anybody who is emotionally invested in the Illibuck, so maybe they can get things turned around before the next meeting. Even with their administrative and recruiting challenges, there’s not really a good reason why Minnesota or Northwestern should just expect to wake up and automatically have better talent than the Illini. The team should not be *this* bad.

One of the really positive developments in the conference over the last few seasons has been the growth in coaching staffs, and with the significant improvement at the bottom end of the league. The worst teams in the Big Ten aren’t nearly as bad as they were earlier. That helps Ohio State, and anybody else that has playoff or New Year’s Six aspirations. Having a team like a Northwestern hang around the periphery of the Top 25 actually matters for the purposes of the selection committee, after all.

But man, Illinois is...not close to that level right now. I’m not sure if what I saw last night would have been a bowl team in Conference USA. And if the Big Ten wants to continue to take another step. it’ll need all schools to achieve a base level of competence and quality that Illinois isn’t reaching right now.

Hopefully they get things turned around, especially in time for the next meeting. That goofy turtle trophy would be more interesting if these games were more compelling.

We’ve seen Illinois occasionally be great. We know it’s possible. Can they become consistently okay? It’s been a while since we’ve seen that.
