The Buckeyes lost their first game this season to Marquette, but bounced back Sunday with a win over Detroit Mercy.

The No. 6 Ohio State men’s lacrosse team had a mixed weekend at the Midwest Lacrosse Classic in Pontiac, Michigan. Friday night, the Buckeyes fell in overtime to No. 19 Marquette by a score of 8-7. Sunday, after playing from behind for most of the game, Ohio State flipped the script to pull out a narrow, 8-7 win. Ohio State is now 4-1 on the season as it heads into the toughest part of its schedule over the next few weeks.

On Friday night, Marquette won the game’s first possession on an Ohio State turnover, but it was Ohio State who got on the scoreboard first on a goal by sophomore attackman Lukas Buckley, assisted by junior attackman Gale Thorpe. Just over a minute later, junior attackman Jack Jasinski added to the Buckeyes’ lead on an unassisted score. Neither team was able to find the back of the net for nearly eight minutes, but two quick goals by Marquette in the final four minutes of the first tied things up. However, with 1:37 remaining in the opening quarter, senior attackman Hank Bethke gave the Buckeyes a 3-2 lead heading into the second.

Ohio State extended its narrow lead in the second quarter on a goal by freshman midfielder Jackson Reid, assisted by senior midfielder John Kelly, but Marquette came right back, closing the gap to one after a score by Anthony Orsini with 11:05 remaining in the second. Despite several shots on lengthy possessions by Ohio State, the Golden Eagles got the ball back. They tied things up on a man-up opportunity after a penalty on the Buckeyes’ Bo Lori for pushing, sending the teams to the break tied four-all.

After a slow start to the third, Orsini found the back of the net once again to give the Golden Eagles their first lead of the game with 10:10 remaining in the quarter. Senior attackman Colin Chell tied things back up on the Buckeyes’ only goal of the quarter, assisted by freshman attackman J.T. Bugliosi. Marquette took advantage of another man-up opportunity midway through the quarter to go up one, and a final score by Ryan Fazio with 1:27 remaining in the third gave the Golden Eagles a two-goal advantage heading into the final quarter.

Jasinski and Buckley tied things up in the fourth on unassisted goals, while the Buckeye defense held Marquette scoreless for the duration of the quarter to send things to overtime.

Marquette won the opening possession of OT, but Ohio State goalie Matthew Smidt made a critical save to give the Buckeyes a shot at the win. Unfortunately, Reid’s shot attempt on the other end of the field fell short, and the Golden Eagles cleared successfully, leading to a score and the win.

Jasinski and Buckley led Ohio State with two goals apiece, with five players scoring in all for Ohio State. Overall shots were 29-26 in favor of Marquette, but Smidt saved 10 shots on the day to Marquette’s seven. The Buckeyes picked up 25 ground balls on the day, led by junior defenseman Matt Borges’ five. Ohio State went 11-19 on faceoffs on the combined efforts of Christian Feliziani and Justin Inacio.

The Buckeyes’ matchup Sunday was a different story, as Ohio State played catch-up for most of the game against Detroit Mercy. Despite the Buckeyes taking the opening possession and taking shots on goal, the Titans scored first on an assisted goal from Brennan Kamish. In fact, the Buckeyes would not score at all for the first quarter as Detroit Mercy took a 3-0 lead after the first 15 minutes.

It wasn’t until a man-up opportunity three minutes into the second quarter that Reid finally found the back of the net, assisted by sophomore attackman Tre Leclaire. Thorpe, assisted by Bethke, followed up with a goal of his own with 8:35 remaining in the half, but the Titans scored again to keep a two goal lead. After winning the ensuing faceoff, Buckley immediately took the ball on attack to score unassisted. Detroit Mercy connected once again, however, to take a two-goal lead to halftime.

Due to a holding call on Ohio State late in the first half, the Titans took a man-up opportunity for the first 21 seconds of the third quarter, converting to go up by three. Five minutes later, on a man-up opportunity of Ohio State’s, Leclaire finally scored his first goal of the weekend to close the gap to 6-4. Jasinski and Buckley once again rounded out the comeback to tie things at six-all heading into the final 15 minutes of play.

Finally, with 11:52 remaining in the game, the veteran Kelly found the back of the net on an assist from Leclaire to give Ohio State its first lead of the day. The Buckeyes kept the ball on attack, but, after several shot clock warnings, lost possession on a missed shot from Bethke. Smidt came up big for the Buckeyes with his seventh save of the day to keep Ohio State’s lead. Thorpe took advantage on the ensuing possession, giving the Buckeyes a two-goal lead with under four to go. Detroit Mercy found the back of the net once more, but Ohio State held the lead for the remainder of the game.

Thorpe and Buckley led Ohio State with two goals each, as six players scored in all. Ohio State held a 35-24 shot advantage, but Marquette’s goalkeeper saved 13 goals to Smidt’s seven. Inacio and Feliziani went a collective 14-of-18 on faceoffs, and Ohio State dominated ground balls 32-22.

Next up, Ohio State heads home to face Towson Saturday in Columbus.

The Buckeye also talked about leading from past teammates and having bragging rights over Michigan.

As Ohio State’s 2017 football season neared the end, it seemed inevitable that Sam Hubbard would be declaring early for the NFL Draft, and likely earn an early-round draft pick. He spent the months since the Cotton Bowl training for his moment to shine at the 2018 NFL Combine.

The Buckeye spoke to media on Saturday and talked about how playing in Columbus prepared him for this moment, and what he sees for the future of defensive line without him. He was asked if he’s talked to any of his former teammate about next year’s Rushman package, and Hubbard seemed confident in the young Bucks.

I’m really close with Nick and I talk to him all the time. I’ve talked with Dre’Mont (Jones) about stepping up and becoming a leader and what he has to do. The D-line is in great hands. B.B. Landers. They’re in great position to have a great year. With coach Johnson leading that room, they’re capable of accomplishing anything.

The defensive end has reason to be confident in the guys coming up, they were part of the reason that the Buckeyes beat rival Michigan all four years of Hubbard’s career. It’s even given him some bragging rights around the training facility the past few months.

I trained around a bunch of Michigan guys. We have bragging rights. I never lost a game to them. I don’t really feel bad for the program that they’ve got angst or whatever. I know our guys are back at winter workouts thinking about beating them next year. Hopefully, we can continue in that.

It’s not just current Buckeyes that have helped prepare Sam Hubbard for the NFL. Having played alongside the 2016 Defensive Rookie of the Year and other players who have found success at the next level, helped develop the defensive end.

Yeah, it was incredible. I really credit that to why I learned the position so fast. Playing around guys like Joey Bosa and Adolphus Washington and behind you having guys like Darron Lee and Raekwon McMillan. It’s a special feeling when you’re out there and you have so many talented guys around you. It’s why it’s going to prepare me for the next level. I feel I already have had a taste of that at Ohio State.

Playing among that much talent has certainly limited Hubbard’s playing time and opportunity to bolster his stat-line. But being the consummate team-first guy, he isn’t worried about what the numbers say, and rather that the results and the game film speak for itself.

If you look at where it got us, we’re all here and we’re all in great position to play at the next level. That’s kind of the picture we had in our heads and what coach Johnson told us would happen. We had faith in that. Although we don’t have crazy numbers, it all worked out in the end and we’re here.

Hubbard has had a chance to play among the best, and also to lead the next generation of all-star defensive ends to come out of Ohio State. Now with the Combine under his belt, he’ll be able to focus on performing at pro day on March 22, and then hopefully be busy flying across the country to meet with teams ahead of April’s NFL Draft.

The Buckeye also talked the advantage of working with Greg Schiano and how every NFL team has asked him about losing to Iowa.

One of 11 Ohio State players to get an invite to the 2018 NFL Combine, defensive lineman Jalyn Holmes spoke to reporters on Saturday and talked about how playing for the Buckeyes helped mold him into an NFL-caliber player. The former captain also talked about coming face-to-face with Baker Mayfield after he planted the OU flag in The ‘Shoe and how most NFL teams are asking what the majority of Buckeye Nation has also been asking since Nov. 4, “How did Ohio State lose to Iowa?”

The Virginia native chose to go away from home to play college ball, but it hasn’t been a decision he’s regretted. He talked about having a chance to learn three-technique from players like Joey Bosa and Adolphus Washington, but also how the coaching staff put a focus on more than just on-field development.

“Probably one of the best decisions I ever made in my entire life. I feel like the people at that program really developed me into a man. Being a team captain at Ohio State this past year has probably been one of my biggest accomplishments and I thank everybody there to help me get to that point.”

Holmes said that he doesn’t think his on-field play was a factor in him earning the honor to be a captain for his senior season, but rather showing his teammates respect and leading by example. One of the reasons that he gained confidence over the past few seasons was thanks to working with former NFL head coach Greg Schiano. Being successful in the Ohio State system makes Holmes confidant that he can also succeed at the next level.

“It was a great experience. An NFL coach, it felt like an NFL coach. It felt like every coach we had at Ohio State, they treated you like an NFL team. Ohio State was a mini-NFL team in a way. When I go to these NFL teams now, we talk it’s the same deal. I learned them traits at Ohio State to act like a professional there. So when I come here, it’s second nature.”

The Buckeye was asked about QB Baker Mayfield planting the Oklahoma flag in Ohio Stadium during their early-season win. While it seems like the prospect is willing to let bygones be bygones, he also admits, “Me and Tyquan, we weren’t playing,” when they met him face-to-face after the stunt.

“I haven’t seen him here. Just the whole thing with the flag, just walked up to him and asked him what was his problem. It was all good. We laughed it off. We’ve been cool since then.”

And finally, the narrative that just won’t die: How Ohio State could lose to Iowa in 2017? Holmes was asked if any NFL team had brought up that game, and the Buckeye admitted, “Every NFL team asks me about the Iowa game.” Unfortunately, Holmes has no more answers than the rest of us for how the Buckeyes could fall to the Hawkeyes.

“I just look at them [arms raised] and I don’t know what happened. I’m still trying to find those answers out.

They played the best game of their life. That’s all it is. We didn’t come to play that day. They came to play. I feel they played the best game of their life and the score showed.”

Holmes is considered a solid mid-round pick in this April’s NFL Draft, and with a solid showing in Indy, could be the next Buckeye lineman to make a splash at the next level.

The Buckeyes now face Michigan in the B1G tournament semifinals.

Michigan State and goalie John Lethemon put on as good a showing as they could, but the Buckeyes just found a way.

Ohio State managed to win by a goal in overtime on Saturday night to sweep the Michigan State Spartans and advance to the Big Ten tournament semifinals, as Michigan State’s goaltending kept them in a game they were outshot in, 42-18. Ohio State trailed twice in the second period, by scores of 2-1 and 3-2, but rallied to tie it before ultimately winning in overtime.

OSU would pepper Lethemon with 15 shots on goal in the third period to MSU’s six, but couldn’t find a way to get one in. It was just shot after shot and save after save. Ohio State came in ranked No. 6 in the country in the USCHO.com poll and played like it in this one. Michigan State has some of the worst possession stats in the country, and couldn’t keep up with the OSU shot generation machine. But Lethemon kept them in it. Ohio State would rally to tie but could never take that final lead until overtime.

Romeo only stopped 15/18, but when your team puts more than twice the shots on goal against the opposition, you really don’t have to be that great to get the win. Romeo wasn’t, but hopefully he’s saving his heroics for the later rounds and NCAA tournament.

Michigan State stayed with the Buckeyes similarly on Friday, but got steamrolled to the tune of four goals in the third period. Lethemon stood strong in this one for as long as he could, but with the Spartans unable to put any pressure on Romeo, adding only one shot in OT to Ohio State’s three, it just wasn’t enough.

Mason Jobst got this one started for the Buckeyes, and with the way they played early and dominated possession, it looked like this one would be over much more quickly than on Friday in OSU’s 6-2 victory.

Jobst found his way in on a breakaway on the powerplay somehow and deked to the backhand and put it over Lethemon.

First period flashback: Mason Jobst scored his first of two goals in the game on the power play in the first period. It was his eighth PPG of the season. pic.twitter.com/kFej9m6Zcf

— Ohio State M Hockey (@OhioState_MHKY) March 4, 2018

Matthew Weis and Wyatt Ege had the assists on the goal that gave OSU the first period lead at 11:09. But with under a minute left in the first, Cody Milan tied it up for the Spartans and despite Ohio State outshooting MSU 12-6 in the first, the game was tied.

The second would be a teeter totter affair as Patrick Khodorenko scored for the Spartans just 29 seconds into the first. Seven minutes and fourteen seconds later, Jobst scored his second of the game, once again on the powerplay, on a feed from the wall by Brendon Kearney. Kearney hit Jobst in the low slot right in front of Lethemon, and the junior tied the game right back up.

Just 22 seconds after that, however, the Spartans gained their lead back with a Tommy Apap tally. Michigan State would hold onto that lead for the comparably long 3:17 before making a pretty embarrassing defensive zone error.

After an OSU shot from the neutral zone on goal, Lethemon let out the rebound, presumably for his defense. Unfortunately for him, John Wiitala came streaking in as the puck slithered away from the MSU defender and sniped it right through the Spartan goalie for his second goal of the weekend.

— Ohio State M Hockey (@OhioState_MHKY) March 4, 2018

The game was just full of weird offensive fireworks. And then the scoring stopped.

Ohio State put 15 shots on goal in the third after firing 12 on net in the second. But they couldn’t get that tiebreaker. Michigan State put up two goals on eleven shots combined in the two periods, so it’d be hard for them to complain. If anything, Sean Romeo kept them in this one far longer than they deserved.

So we went on to overtime. Michigan State would register just one shot on goal while Ohio State would deposit the game winner. The overtime functioned as the game before it had, with Ohio State dominating. Except this time, they finally got one in.

Michigan State looked like they were about to alleviate the pressure with a clear out on a spin-around slapshot but Sasha Larocque found a way to keep the puck in the zone while nearly all of his body was beyond the blue line.

Larocque then fired the puck on net, where it serendipitously deflected off Freddy Gerard’s stick and into the net, giving the Buckeyes the game and series.

OT winner!

So who will the Buckeyes face in the seminfinals next weekend? Who else but That Team Up North, Michigan. The Wolverines swept sixth seeded Wisconsin, and the No. 3 seeded team from Ann Arbor moves on to face the No. 2 seeded Buckeyes.

Ohio State won all four games against the Wolverines during the regular season and will host next weekend in Columbus. Michigan hasn’t lost consecutive games since...they last played Ohio State. Everything is setting up for the Buckeyes to be the favorites to head to their first Big Ten title match since 2014. Should be fun.

Go Bucks.

He may not be projected as a first round pick, but the interception magnet should have no trouble finding a spot in the NFL.

One of two secondary players out of Ohio State working toward a draft pick this spring, safety Damon Webb saw playing time in all four of his years in Columbus. The cornerback-turned-safety was a two-year starter for the Buckeyes, and the only returning starter in 2017 — thanks to his three teammates being drafted last season— all in the first round. Now, Webb is looking to at least hear his name somewhere in the seven rounds of the NFL Draft.

Despite being one of many in a very deep position group at Ohio State, Webb progressed each season, before really making a splash in his senior campaign. On top of his 61 total tackles (44 solo), five interceptions, three passes defended and two fumble recoveries, the safety won Cotton Bowl Defensive MVP in his last game in the scarlet and gray. Against USC, Webb had a fumble recovery and 23-yard pick-6 to earn him the MVP honors.

He might not be projected as high as teammate CB Denzel Ward, but there’s no doubt he ends up on someone’s roster this spring — even as a UDFA. Fortunately, he is the next in a long of Buckeye safeties, some of whom have gone on to lead their teams to Super Bowl wins. (Here’s looking at you Malcolm Jenkins.) Webb isn’t afraid to be a leader, and has both his, and the Ohio State, reputation to prove it.

Scouting Report

Here’s what the pros are saying in his NFL Combine Scouting Report:

STRENGTHS: Opportunistic. Grabbed five interceptions this season and has two career pick-sixes. Defensive MVP of the Cotton Bowl against Sam Darnold and USC. Had three interceptions over his final five games. Showed improvement year over year at safety. Responded faster to quarterback’s clues as season went on. Productive tackler in both seasons as starter. Quick and consistent tackles to limit yards after catch. Good downhill depth in run support to limit cutback angles for runners.

WEAKNESSES: Undersized with narrow waist and the build of a cornerback. Below average athletic ability. Lacks fluidity in his change of direction. Tight-hipped. Struggles to flip and sprint when squatting on routes. Gets grabby in coverage. Will struggle to handle man coverage responsibilities against speedy receivers who climb up to his level. Shows some confusion against combo routes. Chase speed is dull. Fast running backs leave his pursuit angles ineffective.

The top Buckeye prospect can solidify a first-round pick with a solid performance in Indy.

The top prospect out of Ohio State this draft season is cornerback Denzel Ward. He’s been getting first-round mocks since late in the college season, and his decision to declare early for the NFL Draft was solidified when he chose to sit out of the Cotton Bowl — the only Buckeye to do so. One of only three Buckeyes to leave some college eligibility on the table, Ward is ready to prove that he should be the next graduate of #DBU with a Round 1 pick.

With three years of game film under his belt, the cornerback finished his collegiate career notching 67 total tackles (47 solo), 24 pass breakups and two interceptions. He earned consensus All-America honors in 2017, thanks to a career-best season with 17 passes defended -- 15 PBUs and 2 INTs —, good for fourth-highest single season total in Buckeye history. Ward finished his Ohio State career having played in 38 games with 13 starts.

The fact that he didn’t often crack the starting lineup isn’t entirely surprising given the host of NFL talent that he was buried behind on the depth chart. Ohio State had three DBs drafted in the first round of last year’s draft (Marshon Lattimore, Malik Hooker, Gareon Conley) and six DBs in the past three drafts. Ward will look to continue that streak and make, now-former, secondary coach Kerry Coombs one of the most successful assistants ever.

Mike Mayock said former Ohio State CB Denzel Ward is a virtual lock to go in the top 10 in the NFL draft. Mayock has rated Ward as the top CB prospect in this class.

This will be Ward’s first time in front of scouts post-college ball, and, with a good Combine performance, could secure himself a top pick come April.

Scouting Report

Here’s what the pros are saying in his NFL Combine Scouting Report:

STRENGTHS: Supreme athletic ability. Expected to be impressive Combine tester. Can park in a deep squat under wide receiver’s chin at the line. Patient from press showing no panic or hurry in initial movements. Can pedal and mirror for a long time without opening hips. Tremendously gifted footwork. Mirrors and matches with good balance throughout the route. Matches changing route speed stride for stride. Plays from low side of route to take away comebacks. Uses big burst for recovery and closeouts. Carries true long speed down the field. Reads clues from off-man. Reads slants and drives in front of the route in search of an interception. Allowed just over 32 percent completions over last two years. Ballhawk with sudden hands to attack the throw. Bats throws down and will swirl arms around the catch point to prevent target from finishing the catch.

WEAKNESSES: Frame is somewhat slight and he feels small in coverage at times. Lacks play strength to jam and disrupt. Appears to avoid route contact so he doesn’t upset coverage balance. Physical receivers can body him around at the top of the route. Needs to turn and find football sooner with back to the ball. Always around the throw, but lack of size and length shows up with “just misses” in pass defense. Several pass breakups came on throws with poor placement. Coverage benefitted from deep, talented rush unit up front. Has issues disengaging from big blocking receivers. Big backs drag him for a ride in run support.
