4-star Luther Muhammad sent out congrats to Holtmann, while also jumping in on the Micah Potter ‘THE’ debate.

Monday was a pretty good day for the Ohio State Buckeyes. Specifically, the basketball program. Earlier in the afternoon, Chris Holtmann’s program moved up a few spots in the AP Poll, cracking the top-15 once again. They’ll head into the Big Ten Tournament as the No. 13 team in the nation, and the No. 2-seed—which are both spectacular accomplishments.

But there was more good news. In the evening, the Big Ten issued their yearly awards. Holtmann took home Coach of the Year honors, while Keita Bates-Diop was named Player of the Year. Jae’ Sean Tate and Kaleb Wesson also picked up conference honors, too.

The awards got the attention of some commits on social media. Here’s a quick roundup of what they had to say.

@ChrisHoltmann congrats coach well deserved #OH https://t.co/Ct95XL4XVP

— 11 (@LutherMuhammad) February 26, 2018

The most active of the recruits was four-star guard Luther Muhammad. Muhammad, who hails from New Jersey, tweeted out his congrats for Holtmann’s well deserved honor. But the Hudson Catholic star wasn’t done yet on the social media front. After making his tweet to his future coach, he put the other three recruits from the 2018 class (Justin Ahrens, Duane Washington and Jaedon LeDee) on a tweet with a highlight reel from their respective prep careers.

Buckeyes got some dogs @ahrensjustin12 @TheDuaneWash @jae_ledee https://t.co/BSFHWZaFDR

— 11 (@LutherMuhammad) February 26, 2018

Justin Ahrens also tweeted out the video, mentioning his fellow future teammates, too.

LOOK ALIVE, LOOK ALIVE ⭕@jae_ledee @LutherMuhammad @TheDuaneWash https://t.co/Mi2mjkx0IF

— Justin Ahrens (@ahrensjustin12) February 26, 2018
It’s a question of ‘The’

Keeping up with the theme of Twitter, as well as OSU basketball, current center Micah Potter reaffirmed that Ohio State was the one school that deserves the right to have ‘THE’ in front of its name.

Look... I love you and am proud of you. But there is only ONE school that deserves a capital T-H-E and that’s THE Ohio State University. ‍♂️ https://t.co/Eg8fMDkUSy

— Micah Potter (@BigJam_23) February 27, 2018

This stemmed after his brother, four-star 2019 defensive end Noah Potter, received an offer from Notre Dame—or as Noah put on Twitter, ‘THE’ Notre Dame. After big brother’s correction, Luther Muhammad was back at it again on the Twitter sticks.

https://t.co/JIJ6LtUvuI

— 11 (@LutherMuhammad) February 27, 2018

Even though Notre Dame sent in their offer to the Mentor, Ohio product, things are shaping up to be a lost cause for the Fighting Irish. Fifteen predictions are already in for Noah, and all of them point to the Buckeyes as the program that he’ll commit to.

An Offer on the Horizon?

A couple weeks ago, the Under Armour Camp made a swing by Cleveland. There, three-star Cleveland St. Ignatius linebacker Tommy Eichenberg showed what he could do. The 2019 prospect’s performance was good enough to reel in more offers, with Minnesota being the latest one, according to 247sports.

While Ohio State hasn’t sent an offer, 247sports’ Bill Greene reported in his piece that Eichenberg and the Buckeye coaching staff have been in contact—which is a good sign. So far, nine schools have made offers for the No. 11 ranked prospect in Ohio’s 2019 recruiting cycle. On top of the Golden Gophers offer, which came through on Feb. 26, Purdue, Maryland and Iowa are the other Big Ten programs that are making a move on the LB.

It has been said many times before that Urban Meyer wants to recruit more in-state talent. Eichenberg is already a top-15 player in the state, and at his position of inside linebacker, he ranks No. 12. With the recent string of offers coming in, and another season coming up in the fall, there is potential Eichenberg to raise his stock. Will that be what it takes for OSU to send an offer towards the 6-foot-3 standout? Who knows. But with other programs making a move, the Buckeyes may have to act sooner rather than later if they want to be in contention for this St. Ignatius star.

The senior defensive end hopes to prove his versatility among the nation’s best.

“It’s something I always watched when I was younger. I’m not going to say it’s the same as the draft (itself). But right now it’s my Super Bowl.”

-Ohio State defensive end Jalyn Holmes, via Bill Rabinowitz, The Columbus Dispatch

On a defensive line crowded with talent, senior defensive end Jalyn Holmes managed just two sacks during his final year at Ohio State last season. Those numbers, however, don’t speak to the talent that Holmes showed throughout his time in Columbus and beyond. In the Senior Bowl earlier this year, Holmes recorded an additional two sacks which helped to improve his draft stock heading into this week’s NFL Scouting Combine. Currently, Holmes is projected as a second-day pick, going somewhere in the second or third round. Many NFL teams see Holmes’ potential, but not necessarily his production, given the fact he played on such a talented line and split time with so many other future NFL prospects.

The combine offers a chance for Holmes to solidify his spot in the mind of NFL scouts. He has been working out at the EXOS facility in Phoenix since January, trying to improve his 40-yard dash time and bench press while solidifying interview skills for his sessions with scouts from individual teams. Even before those tests, however, Holmes has an advantage when it comes to his medical evaluation. Despite playing four seasons of Division I football, he has managed to remain healthy, avoiding surgery and major injury. That strong medical history certainly will help to east scouts’ minds as they evaluate Holmes as a potential fit for their teams.

Moving into the combine, the 40-yard dash in particular gives Holmes a chance to differentiate himself from other defensive linemen. At 6-foot-5, 280-pounds, Holmes is hoping for a 4.7-second time to show that he can be light on his feet despite his size. For the bench press, Holmes has extra incentive for extra reps, as he is using the event to raise funds for Option2, a charity which provides services for student athletes in Holmes’ native state of Virginia.

“I think they are great. And thankful they are thinking of me.”

-Former Ohio State linebacker Ryan Shazier, via Jeremy Fowler, ESPN

When Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier went down after making a tackle against the Cincinnati Bengals in December, football fans across the country held their collective breath, watching as Shazier didn’t seem to move for several minutes. It was the scariest moment of the pro football season, and it was only months later--when Shazier stood up during an ovation in his honor at a Pittsburgh Penguins game--that fans were able to truly breathe, knowing that what seemed to be paralysis below the waist appeared to be averted. Shazier had undergone spine stabilization surgery shortly after his injury and was later transported to University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. While he has still been seen in a wheelchair, he was ultimately cleared for outpatient care Feb. 1.

Shazier was taken by the Pittsburgh Steelers with the No. 15-overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. He finished his college career at Ohio State 15th in program history in career tackles with 315.

After his injury, the Ohio State program rushed to support Shazier, producing shirts for players to wear during practice declaring “Buckeye Tough” on the front, and featuring both Shazier’s pro number with the Steelers (50) and collegiate number (10) on the sleeves. Shazier appreciated the effort, certainly, and even had a special message for the Buckeyes Cruise for Cancer, thanking Buckeye nation and the Ohio State football family for their support. “[I want to get] back out there on the field and be able to run around with my family,” Shazier said. “Right now that’s my main goal. I just want to say thank you for everything you’ve done and everything you’re doing and all the support you’re doing.”

We are so grateful to see the progress that Ryan has made so far, and continue to wish him a speedy recovery.

“Instead, Ohio State can focus on simply chasing a championship and further validating the remarkable turnaround Holtmann and his scrappy roster have produced.”

-Austin Ward, Land of 10

Expectations were exceedingly low for Ohio State basketball heading into the 2017-18 season. After missing two-straight NCAA Tournaments, hiring a new coach and losing a big chunk of its roster, finishing 11th in the Big Ten seemed a totally reasonable, albeit depressing, prediction for how the season would go. Now, however, those preseason predictions seem laughable. Somehow, in a year, Chris Holtmann has taken what was a lackluster squad last season and turned it into the second-best team in the Big Ten during the now-concluded regular season. With a conference tournament and assured NCAA Tournament berth awaiting, postseason expectations are now, by comparison, exceedingly high.

The Buckeyes finished their conference slate with a 15-3 record, with their only losses coming to Penn State (twice) and Michigan on the road. Some games were closer than what fans would have liked to have seen, like Ohio State’s five-point win over Nebraska, but others showed the offensive engine and stout defense that Keita Bates-Diop and company are capable of.

Ohio State will need to win three games to win the Big Ten Tournament. In its first-round game, the team will face the winner of Penn State/Northwestern--two teams that have been scrappy all season. If they advance, the Buckeyes will, more than likely, have to face Purdue. Another win will probably pit Ohio State against Michigan State. While doable (the Buckeyes have beaten both Purdue and Michigan State as underdogs this season), the path to a conference title is not an easy one. Even if the Buckeyes can’t make it all the way to the top, however, even a win over a bubble-Penn State team could go a long way to improving Ohio State’s seed in the NCAA Tournament. Winning it all could push Ohio State, who improved to No. 13 in the AP Poll this week, as high as a No. 2 seed.

KBD becomes the sixth Buckeye to earn the honor.

On Monday, the Big Ten Conference made it official, as Ohio State’s Keita Bates-Diop was named the 2018 conference Player of the Year. The fourth-year junior becomes the sixth Buckeye to earn the individual honor, following Dennis Hopson (1986-87), Jim Jackson (91-92, 92-93), OSU’s current director of player development Scoonie Penn (98-99), Terence Dials (05-06), and Evan Turner (09-10).

KBD finished second in the Big Ten with 19.2 points per game, behind only Penn State’s Tony Carr. He was also tied for second in rebounds per game with 8.9, along with PSU’s Mike Watkins. Minnesota’s Jordan Murphy led the conference with 11.4. Bates-Diop was also sixth in blocked shots (1.7), first in defensive rebounds (7.5), and ninth in minutes played (32.7).

The Normal, Ill.-native was an All-Big Ten honorable mention following the 2015-2016 season, but played only nine games in 2016-2017 due to a stress fracture in his left leg. This season, under Big Ten Coach of the Year Chris Holtmann, Bates-Diop assumed the mantle of one of the team’s leaders and was named Big Ten Player of the Week four times (12/11, 1/8. 1/15, 2/5), and is on numerous national player of the year watch lists.

Even though KBD has one more year of eligibility remaining, having graduated with a degree in economics in the fall, he participated in last week’s Senior Day ceremonies with his classmates. So, it is likely that the forward will forego his fifth year, and enter the NBA Draft, where he is expected to be a first-round pick.

Congratulations to Keita on this, and everything he accomplished this season.

The first year coach earns OSU the honor for the ninth time.

In what will surely be the first of many honors this postseason, Ohio State’s Chris Holtmann was named the 2017-18 Big Ten men’s basketball Coach of the Year on Monday.

The situation surrounding Holtmann coming to Columbus was a strange one. Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith essentially fired former head coach Thad Matta in June, months after that type of move would normally be made. From there, according to Smith, Holtmann was their first choice, but he initially balked at the offer, sending the Buckeyes on a search elsewhere.

However, eventually the former Butler coach agreed to become the 14th men’s basketball coach in Ohio State history. From there, things didn’t get any less strange, although it was in a much more exciting way for Buckeye fans, as Holtmann led his team on an unbelievable inaugural season, including two wins over top-three ranked teams.

His 24-7 record marks the most wins by any first-year coach in program history, and Holtmann earns the conference Coach of the Year honor for the program’s ninth time, following Eldon Miller (1983), Randy Ayers (91, 92), Jim O’Brien (99, 01), and Thad Matta (06, 07, 10).

While this is Holtmann’s first CoY award leading the Buckeyes, it is his third as a collegiate head coach, following the 2013 honor from the Big South Conference as the coach of Gardner-Webb, and last year’s Big East Coach of the Year award while at Butler.

No matter what happens in this week’s Big Ten Tournament, things are looking good for Holtmann’s squad in the NCAA Tournament, as he has one at least one game in the Big Dance in each of the last three seasons. He will look to extend that streak next month.

Congratulations to Coach Holtmann on the incredible turnaround, and the well-deserved honor.

More announcements to come from the Big Ten.

On Monday, the Big Ten Conference unveiled their 2017-2018 all-conference selections as voted on by the coaches and the media. As a result of the Ohio State Buckeyes’ remarkable turnaround season, OSU is expected to pick up some conference post season honors today.

First, forward Keita Bates-Diop was unanimously selected to his second All-Big Ten team, following his honorable mention honor during his sophomore campaign of 2015-2016. This time he was named to the Big Ten’s first team.

Coming off of an injury-plagued season in which he only played in nine games, Bates-Diop responded by finishing second in the B1G in terms of points per game with 19.2, and tied for second in the conference in total rebounds with 8.9. The red-shirt junior actually led the conference in defensive rebounds (7.5/game), but Minnesota’s Jordan Murphy edged him out via offensive boards, since Bates-Diop is not predominantly an inside player on offense.

As part of their “BTN Live: All-Conference Selection Show,” the Big Ten Network will announce individual awards— including Coach and Player of the Year— and more of the all-conference teams shortly, and we will have those results as soon as they are made official.
