The Buckeyes will soon have one of the most sought after prospects in the class of 2019 on campus.

Need your Ohio State recruiting fix? Land-Grant Holy Land has your back. Get caught up with some of the latest news from this past weekend.

From Hawaii to Columbus

Urban Meyer, Larry Johnson and the rest of the Buckeyes staff will soon have their shot to impress a top tier class of 2019 defensive tackle.

Releasing his spring visit plans via his Twitter page, five-star lineman Faatui Tuitele will be on campus from Honolulu to mingle with the Buckeyes next month.

The dates for the visits have been set:
LSU Tigers- Tuesday, March 13

Oklahoma Sooners- Thursday, March 15

Texas Longhorns- Saturday, March 17

Alabama and Ohio State will be visited in April.

— FAATUI TUITELE (@tuitele87) March 9, 2018

Although Tuitele didn’t mention a date for when he would take his trip to OSU, the visit will reportedly happen on April 6, according to multiple reports.

Yet to pick up an offer from OSU, the trip will give the pair a chance to get more familiar with one another. While a scholarship from the Buckeyes could be coming his way in the very near future, well over 30 universities have handed the 6-foot-4, 300-pounder a chance to attend their school, including USC, UCLA, Oregon and Washington.

Georgia DB visits OSU

While Tuitele will head to campus in April, the Ohio State football program kicked off this past weekend by hosting one of the top defensive back recruits the state of Georgia has to offer.

Making the trip to Columbus from Atlanta for the first time on Friday, three-star class of 2019 safety Kyle Hamilton finally had the opportunity to see what it would be like to be a student athlete at the Ohio State University first hand.

— Kyle Hamilton (@kham316) March 9, 2018

Currently considered the 68th safety and 921st overall prospect in the 2019 class, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, OSU isn’t the only program trying to lock up a pledge from the 6-foot-3, 188-pound standout.

After finishing his junior campaign at Marist School with 60 total tackles and six interceptions, Hamilton has earned scholarships from not just Urban Meyer and crew, but also from the likes of Duke, Notre Dame, Auburn, Tennessee, Stanford, Florida State and his home state Georgia Bulldogs.

With 33 total offers, he’s only considering seven options. On Sunday, just two days after ending his time with the OSU coaches, he named a leader list of Ohio State, Clemson, Georgia, Michigan, Notre Dame, Northwestern and Duke.

Buckeyes offer 2020 OL

Always looking towards the future, the Buckeyes dished out an offer to 2020 offensive guard Luke Wypler on Sunday evening.

— Wypler (@LukeWypler) March 11, 2018

Still nearly two years away from putting pen to paper and signing a National Letter of Intent with a college program, the 6-foot-4, 269-pound sophomore has watched his recruitment take off this winter. Currently sitting with 13 offers on the table, the Buckeyes join Michigan, Florida, Kentucky, Notre Dame and others in the pursuit for the New Jersey native.

Blocking for three-star 2018 quarterback Nick Patti, Wypler and the rest of the St. Joseph Regional line helped lead the Pittsburgh signee to over 2,000 passing yards and 17 touchdowns for the 8-4 Knights last season.

Quick Hits

  • You can’t get them all. After recently releasing a final four of Ohio State, Illinois, LSU, and Texas A&M, 2019 four-star athlete Marquez Beason verbally committed to head coach Lovie Smith, and the Fighting Illini on Saturday.
  • Beason wasn’t the only recruit from the Longhorn State to announce he won’t be playing his college ball in Columbus. Also committing elsewhere was five-star wide receiver Jordan Whittington, who picked Texas over the Buckeyes, UCLA, Florida, Texas A&M and Oklahoma.

Oh great, the Jackrabbits are one of the best scoring, and three-point shooting teams in the country.

The Ohio State Buckeyes will in fact be dancing again, as on Selection Sunday, they found out that they would be the West Region’s No. 5 seed, and will be facing the No. 12 South Dakota State Jackrabbits. The two teams will face off on Thursday, March 15 in Boise, Idaho, at 4 p.m. ET.

Now, as you start putting together your bracket(s)— for entertainment purposes only—, one of the truisms to keep in mind is that you can almost bank on at least one No. 12 seed pulling off the upset. So, if the Buckeyes are going to avoid becoming a victim of the tried-and-true trend, that means that they will have to withstand the high-octane attack from SDSU.

Led by one of the most versatile players in the country, junior forward Mike Daum, the Jackrabbits shoot early and often; their 979 field goals ranks 16th nationally. They also attempted the sixth-most three-pointers (361) in the country this season, and connected on 40.3 percent, good for 12th best. The Jackrabbits’ 84.9 points per game was the sixth highest total in all of Division I college basketball this season.

Daum was the Summit League’s Player of the Year, averaging 23.8 points, 10.4 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game, while also shooting 42.1 percent from behind the arc. Daum also won the award as a sophomore in the 2016-17 season.

He was joined in the conference awards slate by guard David Jenkins Jr., who was selected as the league’s Freshman of the Year. In his first year of college basketball, Jenkins averaged 16.1 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game.

In just his second season at SDSU, T.J. Otzelberger was honored as the Summit League Coach of the Year. The Jackrabbits lost to Gonzaga in the Round of 64 in last year’s NCAA Tournament. Should SDSU upset The Buckeyes, they will have the opportunity to get revenge in their second tournament game on Saturday.

In addition to Daum (First Team) and Jenkins (Second and All-Newcomer Team), SDSU guard/forward Reed Tellinghuisen received an All-Summit League Honorable Mention. Those three are the Jackrabbits only players to average in double-figures on the season.

Ken Pomeroy rates the Jackrabbits as the 75th best team in the country while currently having OSU at 15th.

Despite being the higher seed, Ohio State does face a tough task in SDSU, as they have struggled against guard-heavy teams with the ability to connect from downtown. At 6-foot-9, Daum is the tallest player on the team that averages more than five points per game, but as evidenced by his 91 three-pointers on the season, he is more of a perimeter player—as is 6-foot-7 Tellinghuisen.

However, on the defensive end, the Jackrabbits can get after it on the glass. Their 1,019 defensive rebounds were the second most in the country on the year, and their 1,321 boards were the 13th most nationally as well.

So, while playing a 12th-seeded mid-major from South Dakota might lull some Buckeye fans into a false sense of security for OSU’s first tournament game, everyone in Buckeye Nation should be on notice that these Jackrabbits are very capable of being this year’s No. 12 Cinderella.

OSU’s two-year absence from the Big Dance is now officially over.

Ohio State’s two-year hiatus from the NCAA Tournament is now officially over as the Buckeyes have earned a No. 5 seed in the West Region of the Big Dance. They will begin play in the NCAA Tournament on Thursday, March 14 in Boise, Id. against the No. 12 South Dakota State.

The Jackrabbits come into the tournament with a 28-6 record, and went 13-1 in the Summit League. They won the conference’s tournament, Western Illinois, North Dakota State, and South Dakota.

In new head coach Chris Holtmann’s first season at the helm, the Ohio State Buckeyes finished with a surprisingly strong 24-8 record, including a 15-3 mark in the Big Ten. While the team sputtered down the stretch of this season’s oddly condensed conference slate, they opened league play with nine-straight wins.

Though the team enters the Big Dance having lost three of its final five games, with nearly two weeks off between their Big Ten Tournament exit and their Round of 64 game, the hope is that the Buckeyes will be fresh and focused when they next take to the court.

Despite earning Big Ten Player of the Year honors, Keita Bates-Diop has been inconsistent down the stretch, especially when compared to his early season dominance. However, since the team comes into the tournament having played only one game since Feb. 23, if he is able to find his legs and production, it could mark an exciting postseason run for the Buckeyes.

Holtmann, the B1G Coach of the Year, will likely be relying on the veteran leadership of KBD, Jae’Sean Tate, Kam Williams, and Andrew Dakich; Dakich is the only contributing players on the team with NCAA Tournament experience. For C.J. Jackson, Kaleb Wesson, Andre Wesson, Micah Potter, and the rest of the Buckeye bench, the tournament will be uncharted territory.

Joining the Buckeyes in the Big Dance will be conference comrades, No. 3 Michigan, No. 3 Michigan State, and No. 2 Purdue.

Land-Grant Holy Land will be your one-stop shop for all your Buckeye tournament news, recaps, and analysis throughout the remained of the postseason.

Former Ohio State coach Thad Matta reportedly discussing Georgia job, per report
Matt Tamanini
via our friends at Land-Grant Holy Land
Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

usa_today_9878698.0.jpg

After a year off, Matta could take over a team that went 18-15 this season.

According to CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein, the winningest men’s basketball coach in Ohio State history might be resurfacing after a year away from the game. Thad Matta is reportedly close to beginning discussions with the University of Georgia for its recently vacated head coaching position.

Former Ohio State HC Thad Matta is a serious candidate for the vacancy at Georgia, per multiple sources. Discussions between both sides could begin as early as today.

— Jon Rothstein (@JonRothstein) March 11, 2018

Thad Matta spent 13 seasons as the head coach in Columbus, amassing an impressive 337-123 (.733) record, including one trip to the National Championship Game, two Final Four appearances, and (not for nothing) an NIT Tournament title. It wasn’t until his final season for the Buckeyes that Matta had his only campaign as a head coach in which he recorded fewer than 20 wins. That streak includes a season at Butler and three at Xavier.

Matta has also recently been linked to the head coaching positions at Ole Miss and Pittsburgh.

Mark Fox and Georgia parted ways over the weekend, ending his nine-year run in Athens. Fox went 163-133 (.551) in his time with the Bulldogs, getting bounced in the round of 64 in both of his NCAA Tournament appearances.

According to our friends at Dawg Sports, there are a number of interesting candidates to replace Fox, including Matta, former Indiana coach Tom Creen, Iowa State’s Steve Prohm, and more.

Less than nine months ago, Matta was fired by OSU athletic director Gene Smith, in part, because the recruiting standards that had led Matta to win five Big Ten titles were not being met. While it has rarely ever been said publicly, many assume that this decline in recruiting was due in part to Matta’s well-chronicled back issues.

However, having been able to relax and recuperate for a full season, the still-excitable, 50-year-old Matta could be what UGA needs to kickstart a program that has been an also-ran in the SEC for decades.

If, and when, Matta finds a new program to lead, we wish him the best of luck— except for if they ever face the Buckeyes.

The women’s team advanced to their first-ever Frozen Four, while the men’s team is off to the Big Ten Championship Game

There’s a saying: Sometimes, it’s better to be lucky than good.

On Saturday, both the Ohio State Buckeyes women’s and men’s programs weren’t just lucky, they were good, too.

Actually, they were really really good.

The women’s hockey team, which is 24-10-4 on the year, found themselves as one of the eight programs that had a shot at winning the national championship in women’s hockey. On Saturday, in the quarterfinals stage, OSU faced Boston College—and shut them out, 2-0. Junior defenseman Lauren Boyle netted the first goal of the match in the second period, which was also the program’s first-ever goal in the NCAA Tournament.

Redshirt junior goaltender Kassidy Sauvé strung together 38 saves to shutout the Golden Eagles in their own backyard in Chestnut Hill, Mass., leading the Buckeyes into a matchup with No. 1 overall seed Clarkson next weekend in Minneapolis.

Not too long after the women’s team punched their ticket for another hockey game, the men’s program took to the ice, literally, down the road from campus. Their Big Ten Tournament semifinal contest with the Michigan Wolverines took place at Nationwide Arena, the home of the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The men’s program never trailed in the game, but made things dramatic down the stretch. OSU, who came into the game as the No. 6 team in the land, held off the No. 11 Wolverines, 3-2, with the help of a game-winning goal off the stick of Matthew Weis in overtime.

Weis’s winner sends the Scarlet and Gray into the Big Ten Championship Game against No.1-seed Notre Dame next Saturday night in South Bend, Ind.

If you want to expand the hockey-success bubble in Columbus even more, the Blue Jackets are on a roll, too—even though they didn’t play on Saturday. The CBJ are in the midst of a four-game winning streak, and get back on the ice on Monday against the Montreal Canadiens.
