The Buckeyes are planning to play four of their six NCAA Tournament games in Columbus, this season.

Coming off of their first Big Ten Tournament championship since 2011, the Ohio State women’s basketball team officially earned the right to host the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament this week, thanks to their No. 3 seed in the Spokane Region. The Buckeyes will square off against No. 14 George Washington on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. ET.

This season, OSU won the B1G regular season and tournament titles behind three-time conference Player of the Year Kelsey Mitchell. With a 27-6 overall record, including a 13-3 mark in conference, the Buckeyes finished the regular season ranked 10th in the AP Poll.

Not only will Ohio State host the first two rounds on campus, but this year’s Women’s Final Four will also be held in Columbus, just down High Street at Nationwide Arena. Fortunately for coach Kevin McGuff and company, his team is 15-2 in C-bus this season, only losing to now No. 3 Louisville in overtime in November and to Michigan in January.

Mitchell is unquestionably the star of the team, and she might be the best player in the program’s storied history. With 3,363 total points, she sits third all-time in the NCAA women’s scoring ranks, just 30 points behind Southwest Missouri State’s Jackie Stiles. Should the Buckeyes make it to the final game at Nationwide Arena, Mitchell would have a difficult, but legitimate chance, to catch Washington’s Kelsey Plum, who ended her career last season with 3,527 points.

However, in addition to Mitchell’s 24.5 points per game, three other Buckeyes average double figured; Stephanie Mavunga (16.5), Linnae Harper (14.6), and Sierra Calhoun (11.8). Mavunga is the only Buckeye to average a double-double, pulling down 10.8 board per contest.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish secured the No. 1 seed in the Spokane region. If the Buckeyes win their Round of 64 game against the Colonials, they will face the winner of No. 6 LSU and No. 11 Central Michigan. In the Sweet 16, Ohio State would face off against the surviving team from No. 2 Oregon, No. 7 Green Bay, No. 10 Minnesota, and No. 15 Seattle. The Round of 16 game for the Buckeyes would be in Spokane, Wash., so if they faced Oregon— or Seattle— it would likely be a veritable road game.

All games for the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament will air on the ESPN family of networks.

Jordan Fuller and a slew of young talent will likely man the back-end of the OSU defense.

“There are a handful of intriguing candidates behind projected starter Isaiah Pryor who clearly have upside and have eased some of the concerns about the depth in the back end.”

-Austin Ward, Landof10

As if losing key players in Ohio State’s secondary to the NFL wasn’t bad enough, the Buckeyes also had to fill the spot left by legendary coach Kerry Coombs. With Coombs taking a job with the Tennessee Titans, the Buckeyes brought in Alex Grinch to continue the #DBU reputation that Ohio State has earned over the past few years.

So what will the secondary look like? Austin Ward took a look at where the safety position group stands early on in spring practice, and what the depth chart might look like closer to the season. Ward notes that the breadth of incoming talent, and young guys ready for their chance to make a mark, eases concerns about replacing Damon Webb in the fall.

Jordan Fuller will likely keep his starting role, and will head into 2018 as the most veteran of the position group. Competing for Webb’s starting role will be Pryor, Amir Riep, Brendon White, Jahsen Wint, and Wayne Davis. There’s a lot to be positive about with the group of sophomores, but incoming freshman Marcus Hooker and Josh Proctor could also be in the mix.

“That title belongs to Billy Price, one of the most polished and experienced prospects in the entire 2018 NFL draft class. A versatile blocker who can play both guard and center, Price’s versatility and complete skill set should make him a first-round pick.”

-Justin Melo, Draft Wire

Ohio State has a reputation for churning out NFL-ready offensive lineman, and things aren’t about to change in 2018. Guard-turned-center Billy Price is among one of the top prospects at his position, and despite willingness (and ability) to move all over the line, he’ll likely be picked up to be the anchor of an NFL team’s line. Of all of the successes to come out of Columbus, Price might be among one of the best and most experienced to head to the next level.

If he’d had a good performance at the NFL Combine just over a week ago, Price was expected to solidify himself as a first-round prospect. However, he ended up suffering a partial tear in his pec, which, after a second-opinion, resulted in him undergoing surgery that could keep him out for about four months. The Buckeye finished his third rep on the bench press early in the combine before the injury occurred, but impressed folks by sticking around to talk to the media, instead of avoiding talking about the issue.

Price didn’t miss a single game during his career at Ohio State, and hopefully with a quick recovery, can continue that streak in the NFL.

“Right now, the only details of the contract are that it’s a three-year deal. No word on how much cap space will be allotted his way, but his last deal in 2013 was a four-year, $3.5m deal.”

-Joe McAtee, Turf Show Times

NFL free agency is just days away, and there are several former Ohio State players vying for a new contract this offseason. The first official Buckeye signing was Los Angeles Rams’ long snapper Jake McQuaide, who was signed to a three-year deal, to keep him from meeting with other teams.

The long snapper is often overlooked as an important part of the roster, but consistency is key, and the Buckeye has been nothing short of that. McQuaide hasn’t missed a game since he made the move to the NFL, and was voted into the Pro Bowl in both 2016 and 2017. He was undrafted out of Ohio State in 2011, and has played all seven of his NFL seasons with the Rams.

Coastal Carolina Tournament @ Conway, S.C.

OHIO STATE RALLIES TO WIN AT NO. 21 COASTAL CAROLINA, 7-5

The Buckeyes score six runs in final two innings to claim comeback win over Chanticleers Sunday

CONWAY, S.C. - The Ohio State baseball team rallied with six runs in the final two innings to beat No. 21 Coastal Carolina, 7-5, Sunday afternoon at Springs Brooks Stadium. With their second ranked win of the year, the Buckeyes improve to 9-6 overall, while the Chanticleers drop to 12-5 overall in 2018. Ohio State finishes action at the 2018 Environmental Chanticleer Classic with a 2-2 record.

QUOTE FROM COACH
"Even though we were down in the middle of the game, I really liked how we were competing," head coach Greg Beals said. "We were making plays and pitching the ball well. The think I liked the most is the fight in this team. This group of young men have a lot of fight in them. It was very evident with six runs in the last two innings to bust open a ball game for us. Big win for us and I liked how we went about it. A lot of guys got in the ball game. We used a lot of pieces today, on the mound and on the offensive side. We showed the confidence we have in them and gave them shots to put them in an opportunities to help this ball club win."

IN THE BOX SCORE
Noah McGowan
was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, home run and two RBI. His fifth homer in 2018 in the top of the ninth turned out to be two big runs for the Scarlet and Gray. Nate Romans had the big two-run double in the eighth inning to give the team the lead. Conner Pohl and Dillon Dingler each had a pair of hits in the game. Noah West was 2-for-4 with a double and hit by pitch. Tyler Cowles wa 2-for-4 with a run scored, double and walk.

RUN IN THE FIRST
Pohl got the Buckeyes on the board first in the top of the first when he found some green on an opposite field single through the left side. Brady Cherry scored on the play.

NO RUNS FOR AWHILE
Both teams were kept off the scoreboard for the next five innings. The Buckeyes left a runner on in the second and third fames. West was hit by a pitch in the top of the fifth and Cherry singled to center field, but a strikeout kept it 1-0. In the sixth, Pohl and Dingler each knocked their second base hits of the afternoon, however, CCU reliever Davie Inman got a strikeout and fly out to strand both runners.

COASTAL GRABS THE LEAD
The Chanticleers struck the dish two times in the bottom of the sixth to gain their only lead of the day. Starting pitcher Adam Niemeyer was relieved by right-handed reliever Kyle Michalik with runners on the corners and no down. A walk loaded the bases before a RBI single through the left side by Michael Koenig tied the game. Turner Buis knocked in the go-ahead run on a sac fly.

EIGHTH INNING RALLY
Ohio State battled back in the top of the eighth vs. the CCU bullpen. The OSU bats scored three times on three hits to take the lead. McGowan led off the at-bat with a single and Pohl walked. With the bases loaded, a wild pitch by CCU left-handed reliever Dylan Gentry allowed McGowan to score. Romans then wacked a 1-0 pitch off Gentry to left center to make it a 4-3 game. Pinch-hitter Andrew Fishel drove in the team's fifth run with a RBI single to right.

INSURANCE PLEASE
Ohio State added two runs in the top of the ninth when McGowan launched his fifth homer of the year to make it a 7-3 contest. He has a Big Ten-best 24 RBI through 15 games.

STARTER TALK
Niemeyer had his strongest start of the year in a no decision performance. He scattered four hits on two runs with four walks and four strikeouts in five innings of work.

TO THE BULLPEN
Michalik allowed two hits and one walk in one inning. Left-handed reliever Andrew Magno gave up a run with one walk. Right-handed reliever Seth Kinker threw the final two innings and improved to 2-1 on the year. He gave up two runs on four hits with two strikeouts and one walk. He ended the game on a called strike three with the tying run on first base.

UP NEXT
Ohio State heads to UNC-Wilmington to a two-game series Tuesday-Wednesday at Brooks Field in Wilmington, N.C.

GAME NOTES

  • Ohio State concludes action at the 2018 Environmental Staffing Chanticleer Classic with a 2-2 record.
  • Cowles extended his team-high hit streak to career-high 11 games. He's reached base in all 15 games in 2018 (career-high).
  • McGowan has a team-high five home runs, 19 runs scored, 25 hits, six doubles and 24 RBI through 15 games.
  • Other hit streaks extended: West (3).
  • Reached base streaks extended: Pohl (12) and West (3).
  • Multi-hit games: McGowan (9), Cowles (7), Pohl (6), Dingler (2) and West (2).
  • Multi-RBI games: McGowan (5) and Romans (2).
  • Kinker picked his second win of the year and 11th of his career.
  • Cowles finished the weekend with a .500 average (8-for-16) with three doubles, two home runs, two walks, stolen base and five RBI.
  • The Buckeyes batted .295 as a team over the four games and knocked 18 extra-base hits, including nine home runs.
RANDOM NOTES FROM AROUND THE BALL PARK

  • Another early morning for the boys. The early-bird Buckeyes. Today marked the sixth time the group had a first pitch at/before 11 a.m. local time this year. And it was actually a 10 a.m. first pitch as the clocks sprung ahead overnight with Daylight Savings. The team woke up on the bus like any other gameday morning, this time with a little more country music before going more electronic as we got closer to the park. A nice, smooth transition of high-quality sound.
  • Coastal SI8D Mike Cawood (who made the random notes a season-high three straight days) had breakfast ready for the patrons of the press box. Delicious donuts were provided. There was even free gum by the game notes table too! OSU football SID and former baseball SID Jerry Emig would be proud.
  • One of the duties for the pitchers during BP...home run watch. Relievers Kyle Michalik, Austin Woodby and Andrew Magnowere tasked with the ball park chore. But it didn't look much like a tough task this morning. They were seen feet up in some of the Coastal teal Adirondack chairs located behind the right center field wall, taking it all in. Ready for the next Buckeye dinger to come their direction. Somewhere on the beach you could say, 15 miles inland from Myrtle.
  • Athletic trainers are talented and crafty individuals. Seth Kinker apparently broke the tap on the team's water cooler before the game. Help was on the way and Paul Dawson was ready. Using a pair of scissors and some nifty athletic tape, he fixed the problem in just four minutes. Not all heroes wear capes.
