The Buckeye tight end will look for more opportunity to contribute at the next level

Though underutilized at Ohio State, Marcus Baugh will have the opportunity to prove his worth as an offensive weapon in the NFL, because after the conclusion of the 2018 NFL Draft, the tight end has reportedly signed as an undrafted free agent with the Oakland Raiders.

As most TEs have been in the Urban Meyer system, Baugh was seen primarily as a blocker during his four years in Columbus. However, in his senior season, he did catch five touchdown passes, and accounted for 304 yards through the air. A two-time All-Big Ten honorable mention, the Riverside, Calif. native was one of only two Buckeyes two have a reception in every game of the 2017 season, and had at least one catch in 23 or his final 24 games as a Buckeye.

His 55 receptions ranks ninth in OSU history for a tight end, and his eight TDs is seventh. Though he was never a focal point of the offense, scouts do see upside in the 6’3, 247-pounder. His athletic ability serves him well in two areas especially, open field running after the catch, and in pass blocking. He also has the ability to post up smaller linebackers who cover him.

However, he posted a double-digit drop rate over his final two seasons in Columbus, and doesn’t yet have the strength to be a consistent run blocker at the next level. But, his quality footwork and long arms give him some advantages that he could grow into with NFL coaching.

Congrats to Marcus on making a move to the next level.

One of the Buckeyes’ leaders will have the chance to play at the next level.

Though his stats might not have shown it, Chris Worley has been an invaluable member of the Ohio State football program for the past five years. And now, he will get his chance to impact the Cincinnati Bengals, as the team reportedly signed him as an undrafted free agent, following the final round of the 2018 NFL Draft. The LB will joining OSU teammates Billy Price and Sam Hubbard who were drafted by the Bengals.

Free Agent Alert: @TheRealJizzle35 ➡️ @Bengals #GoBucks #DevelopedHere #WhoDey pic.twitter.com/5gXh3gTcNO

— Ohio State Football (@OhioStateFB) April 28, 2018

A captain and two-time All-Big Ten honorable mention, Worley accounted for 126 tackles during his final two seasons with the Buckeyes; and 11 tackles for loss in his career. The Cleveland Glenville alum played in 50 games for OSU, starting 24. During his senior season, the multi-talented player started at all three LB positions.

As you would expect from such a respected team leader, Worley’s best games came in the biggest moments for the Buckeyes. In his career, he had four double-digit tackle games; two versus Oklahoma, one against Michigan, and one versus Clemson.

Though Worley isn’t the smoothest player on the field, he is a vicious hitter, and a stronger open-field tackler. His excellent technique also allows him to fill running lanes, and he rarely allows broken tackles. Scouts seem to think that his ability to play special teams, as well as LB, could be valuable at the next level.

However, his lack of strength and speed will likely become a factor in the NFL, especially on passing downs. But, his excellent character and outstanding football IQ will be important in trying to stick in the league, whether it is on an active or practice squad roster.

Congratulations to Worley on taking the next step in his football future.

Following an incredible Cotton Bowl performance, Webb will continue his career at the next level.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before, but a former member of Ohio State’s secondary has found a home in the NFL. This time, it was safety Damon Webb, who— according to reports— was signed by the Tennessee Titans as an undrafted free agent. In joining the Titans, Webb will be reunited with his college position coach, Kerry Coombs, who left Ohio State to join Buckeye legend Mike Vrabel, who took over as head coach this offseason.

Free Agent Alert: @DameWebb ➡️ @Titans #GoBucks #DevelopedHere #TitanUp pic.twitter.com/AsB1GTl5ko

— Ohio State Football (@OhioStateFB) April 28, 2018

The 2017 Cotton Bowl MVP, Webb’s final game at Ohio State was an impressive one; the Detroit native recovered a fumble, and returned a Sam Darnold interception for a touchdown. As the only returning starter to the Buckeyes’ secondary in 2017, he led a group of young talented players, which included the fourth-overall pick in the draft, Denzel Ward.

After being an honorable mention as a junior, Webb was named to the All-Big Ten third-team as a senior. His five interceptions in 2017 were good for second best in the B1G, and tied for 11th nationally. Over his four year career, Webb accounted for 131 tackles and seven passes defended.

Looking towards the NFL, scouts note that he has improved his game tremendously over his time as a starter, and is a strong tackler, especially in run support. However, at just a tick under 5’11, and weighing in at 209 pounds, he is a bit undersized, and doesn’t have the athletic ability to be an immediate contributor in the NFL. His lack of top-line speed could also be an issue as he jumps to the next level.

Despite that, Webb has proven productive against some of the best competition in college football, and I wouldn’t count him out from having a quality pro career just yet. Congratulations, Damon, on achieving the dream of joining an NFL roster.

Here’s the full breakdown of who went where, and which other Ohio State alums they might be joining.

The 2018 NFL Draft is now over, and it was a pretty eventful weekend for the Buckeyes, with seven players getting picked over the three-day event. From the good — Denzel Ward continuing the first-round legacy of Kerry Coombs players — to the bad — Jamarco Jones falling three rounds further than he was projected — a lot of dreams were realized.

For the handful of Ohio State prospects that didn’t get picked this weekend, this isn’t the end of the road. The undrafted free agent scramble is a way for a lot of these guys to still find a roster spot and head to rookie camp, where they’ll get another shot to prove their value at the next level.

Here’s the full breakdown of Buckeyes picked the 2018 NFL Draft:

Denzel Ward (No. 4) Cleveland Browns

It was no surprise that Ward was the first Buckeye off of the board, but to go No. 4 was quite the vote of confidence from Cleveland. The Browns are getting a home-town guy, who should be able to step in Day 1 and contribute to a defense that has more than one area in which they need to improve.

Is he joining any other Buckeyes? RB Carlos Hyde

Billy Price (No. 21) Cincinnati Bengals

Despite concerns about falling out of the first round due to his pec injury sustained at the combine, Price was still taken on the opening night of the event. He met with the Bengals a few times throughout the draft process, and will now continue his football path a little further south — but still in his home-state — and play for the Bengals.

Is he joining any other Buckeyes? DE Sam Hubbard (more on him in a second)

Tyquan Lewis (No. 64) Indianapolis Colts

Getting picked in the late-second round is about right for Lewis, who was sick for part of the combine, but had a good showing at Ohio State’s Pro Day back in March. Lewis joins a host of other Buckeye defenders in Indy, and should fit right in at the next level.

Is he joining any other Buckeyes? SAF Malik Hooker, OL Jack Mewhort, LB Joshua Perry, LB John Simon

Jerome Baker (No. 73) Miami Dolphins

Baker met with a lot of teams throughout the pre-draft process, and despite his athleticism and leadership qualities, was always considered a third round pick — which is where he went. Last year, the Dolphins snagged Raekwon McMillan, and reuniting these two on Miami’s defense should make other teams in the AFC East a little nervous.

Is he joining any other Buckeyes? LB Raekwon McMillan

Sam Hubbard (No. 77) Cincinnati Bengals

The defensive end was considered a bubble first or second round pick early on in the draft process, but ended up sliding into Round 3. It could all be for the best, as the Bengals picked up another Ohio native, and one that can line up at various positions and compete.

Is he joining any other Buckeyes? C Billy Price

Jalyn Holmes (No. 102) Minnesota Vikings

Another Buckeye who fell further than expected was DE Jalyn Holmes, but he was eventually picked up by the Vikings in Round 4. He wasn’t a full-time starter for the Buckeyes, but competed along side the best in the country for most of his collegiate career.

Is he joining any other Buckeyes? C Pat Elflein

Jamarco Jones (No. 168) Seattle Seahawks

The offensive tackle fell into the fifth round of the draft, but landing with the Seattle Seahawks should make the wait worth it. Jones is used to protecting mobile quarterbacks at Ohio State, and he’ll have his hands full with Russell Wilson’s motor in Seattle, but the Buckeye is up for the challenge.

Is he joining any other Buckeyes? TE Nick Vannett

The Maryland native was originally a Wisconsin commit.

You may remember when, shortly after being hired at Ohio State, Urban Meyer reached into Wisconsin’s recruiting class and plucked offensive linemen, much to the dismay of then head coach Bret Bielema. Bielema had some strong words for Meyer, calling the move “illegal” and harboring a bit of a grudge before leaving for Arkansas.

Meyer apparently never learned his lesson, because two head coaches later in Madison, Urban is still antagonizing the Wisconsin Badgers. Ohio State flipped a longtime Wisconsin commit as Maryland safety Bryson Shaw announced that he’d be playing his college ball in Columbus.

— Bryson shaw (@bshaw272727) April 28, 2018

Shaw is ranked 660th nationally, and 53rd among safeties in the 247Sports composite rankings, though their in-house rankings have him as a four-star, at 230th nationally. I would tend to agree with the latter more so than the former, and think that Shaw is in for a big jump this summer, if he chooses to attend the camp circuit.

Shaw is the seventh member of Ohio State’s 2019 class, and either the first or second safety in the class, depending on where Ronnie Hickman ends up. One of the top safeties on the board for Ohio State, Daxton Hill, recently included the Buckeyes in his top-six, so this commitment may show where the Buckeyes really stand with Hill.

Ohio State is looking to land a few safeties in this class, so I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Hill is still in play, as is Floridian Jordan Battle. When it comes to Shaw’s actual value on the field, he’s a very talented player. He fits the mold of a typical Wisconsin defensive back extremely well (take that as you will, and keep Jim Leonhard in mind), as he’s a big hitter, with a great knack for tracking the ball.

Ohio State is extremely excited to have him, and feel they’ve landed a bit of a diamond in the rough. You can watch his highlights below, and I’d highly recommend that you do.

Jones is ready to prove he’s the next great O-lineman out of Ohio State.

With the No. 168 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, the Seattle Seahawks picked offensive tackle Jamarco Jones out of Ohio State. He was initially expected to be a Day 2 pick, but after falling to the end of the fifth round, Jones finally got the call to Seattle.

So, why should you be excited the Seahawks drafted Jones? We’ve got you covered:

1. Paves the way for the rushing game to flourish

If you draft someone to hold the fort down at the line, then you want guys that have proven they can handle the responsibility. Spoiler: Jones has done exactly that.

While he was blocking for run lanes, the rushing attack flourished. Granted, when you have guys like Mike Weber and J.K. Dobbins handling the carries, they don’t need much room before breaking away downfield, but Jones was still a big factor.

In the four years Jones was saw action on the field, OSU had a top-20 running game. Last season, the Scarlet and Gray had the 17th best rushing attack; over the last three seasons, though, the Bucks have led the Big Ten when it came to moving the ball on the ground.

A big reason for that success was Jones.

2. He backed up Taylor Decker

Before he took over the reigns on the O-line, he watched one of the best lineman in the Urban Meyer years do work. Taylor Decker was the predecessor to Jones, and he not only had a great college career, but a great start to his NFL career, too. Decker ended up as a first round pick in the 2016 draft —and played 100% of snaps his rookie season—, so it’s not like Jamarco was backing up a guy who didn’t standout to scouts.

On top of that, Jones is in good company. Other notable left tackles to don the Scarlet and Gray include Mike Adams, Alex Boone and Jack Mewhort. All three of them spent at least a few seasons in the league.

3. Tons of starts, and time at the line of scrimmage

A mainstay at the line of scrimmage, Jones started in 27 consecutive games and played in 50 games over the course of his Ohio State career. Those 27 starts at left tackle came over his junior and senior seasons.

A lot to like about Jamarco Jones. One of the only OTs I’ve seen vertical set as often as he does, which he is very efficient and smooth with. Needs to work on building his house & transitioning to anchor, but shows good strike variation/timing to win reps early. pic.twitter.com/icn86M4Eeo

— Brandon Thorn (@VeteranScout) April 19, 2018

Experience on a team that has had a perpetual revolving door of NFL-grade talent is always a good sign. Last season, Jones picked up first-team all-Big Ten honors—so the experience has paid off.

4. Consistent star in the Big Ten

In the 2016 season, one where the Buckeyes ended up in the College Football Playoff, Jones picked up second-team all-Big Ten honors. So, for him to pickup first-team honors last season shouldn’t be too surprising.

A constant growth in talent is to be expected, and Jones has displayed that on the field, as well as in practice. With constant stars being churned out through the Buckeye coaching staff, any starter has to constantly be at the top of their game, or risk being overtaken by an underclassman. Jones never faced that problem or had to be part of a rotational line, as he was the go-to at LT for the Buckeyes.

5. Protector of the QB

Keeping the quarterback upright is one of the goals of the offensive line. Additionally, giving your QB time to make throws is also on the checklist of “things that need to be done” for a successful offense.

J.T. Barrett is coming off a 3,000-yard passing season, thanks to the line giving him support. Jones played a role in making sure the three-time captain could move the offense in the air—and at times, on the ground.

Draft analysts also agree with Jones’ ability to do well in passing situations. Just look at what Pro Football Focus analyst Mike Renner said of Jamarco.

"Jones wins the award for prettiest pass sets in the entire class. He’s already NFL ready in that regard and has improved every season of his college career."@PFF_Mike @PFF on @jjones_74#GoBucks #DevelopedHere #NFLDraft pic.twitter.com/kt7g1pg9X5

— Ohio State Football (@OhioStateFB) April 25, 2018

The NFL has premier QBs all around. Now in Seattle, he'll be protecting Russell Wilson—a Super Bowl winning QB. If Jones can protect the blindside and alleviate any feelings of pressure, then the offense can flourish.

Any concerns about Jones?

His NFL Draft Combine was not good. He ran the third slowest 40-yard time (5.50 seconds) and had the second slowest 3-cone drill amongst offensive lineman. Some days, you just don’t have it, and for Jones, that appeared to be the case when he was in Indianapolis for the combine.

Taking an in-depth look at one event may cause more hysteria and over-thinking when it comes to evaluating potential NFL talent. Reading the tea leaves from shuttle times, 3-cone tests and 40-yard dashes may bring an incorrect portrayal of the prospect being evaluated.

With Jones now finding a home in the NFL, we’ll see how accurate of a representation his combine numbers were, as he works his way through training camp.

Don’t look now, but Ohio State might be turning into O-Line U!

Today, Jamarco Jones became the second Ohio State offensive lineman selected in the 2018 NFL Draft, as he was taken by the Seattle Seahawks with the No. 168 pick in the fifth round. He joins 2018 first-rounder Billy Price and previous draftees Reid Fragel, Corey Linsley, Jack Mewhort, Jeff Heuerman, Nick Vannett, Taylor Decker, and Pat Elflein as offensive lineman selected during the Urban Meyer-era at Ohio State.

Hailing from Chicago, the left tackle has twice been selected to both the media and coaches’ All-Big Ten teams, including a first-team honor in 2017. Jones played in 50 games and started 27 at left tackle during his final two seasons in Columbus. During the two years that he started for the Buckeyes, the team led the B1G in rushing both years, and finished in the top-20 during all four of his seasons in scarlet and gray.

An exceptional pass blocker, Jones has the ability to slide in protection and to withstand a bullrush. He also has the athleticism to help on big runs and broken plays with the ability to get to the second-level of a defense.

However, after weighing in at 6’4, 299 pounds at the NFL Combine, he might need to add some size as a pro left tackle, and he has a decent amount technique that he can improve on once he gets into an NFL training camp.

Congrats to Jamarco for continuing the tradition of OSU o-linemen representing in the league.

The Buckeyes’ stat-line might not be eye-popping, but his style of play sure is.

With the No. 102 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, the Minnesota Vikings picked defensive end Jalyn Holmes out of Ohio State. He’ll join Pat Elflein in Minnesota and with some development during training camp, could be a contributor in Year 1.

So, why should you be excited the Vikings drafted Holmes? We’ve got you covered:

1. Not much tread on his tires

Jalyn Holmes came to Ohio State in the class of 2014 as a highly touted four-star, ranked as the No. 4 defensive end in the country and the No. 4 prospect in the talented state of Virginia. Unfortunately for the US Army All-American, he joined a loaded Ohio State defensive line that included Joey Bosa, Sam Hubbard, Tyquan Lewis, and later on Nick Bosa and Chase Young.

Albeit talented, Holmes was injected into a highly competitive rotation where he was on the outside looking in during his first two seasons — playing only 10 total games during that time period. Good news though, he should be fresher than most.

2. He’s got a very high ceiling

Sure, Holmes could have transferred and started basically anywhere else, but he stuck it out and made a great impact during his final two seasons, where he was two-time All-Big Ten and was named a team captain his senior season. Since he’s never been an every-down player, what he accomplished in those limited snaps shows that he has a very high ceiling and should be a more impactful pro than collegiate player.

“I tell you, if you go back and watch film on Jalyn last year, I thought he played the most consistent of all the guys,” Johnson said before last season. “I think he is a starter in my mind. He practices like a starter and practices with the ones, so to me, he is a one.

In today’s pass-happy NFL, he has the skill-set and size to bump down to the interior and rush the passer, as shown below (No. 11). He’s strong as an ox and prefers to bull rush, rather than use his speed — or lack thereof.

— Ben Fennell (@BenFennell_NFL) April 22, 2018
3. Ohio State has the best coached defensive line in the country

Not only can the Buckeyes recruit the position better than any program not named Alabama, but once they get there, they explode and reach their potential. Defensive line coach Larry Johnson is regarded as the best defensive line coach in the country. Joey Bosa is arguably the best defensive end in the league, while Nick Bosa and Chase Young are future top five picks.

When Holmes was asked when he thought the NFL was a possibility, he responded with, “When I got to Ohio State. I’m playing with teammates and training with guys who were getting drafted in the first round every year. It makes you think, ‘It’s going to be my time one year.’”

”I think he brings a lot to the table. He has got high-energy, great leadership skills and he wants to be great.” Larry Johnson said. “And a guy who works as he hard as he does to be in a position he is right now, I am really excited about what Jalyn can bring to the table. I look forward to watching him play going through this next year.”

4. Holmes puts the team first

It had to have been frustrating to watch his teammates get all of the accolades, when he could have been in that position at another school, but he kept with it as a Buckeye and it’s something that should be admired.

“Playing all the positions has been an experience,” Holmes said. “It’s helped me grow more as a football player because I was able to change from DE to nose guard in the same game. It forces you to study even more and to be ready.”

Him putting extreme faith in Urban Meyer and the rest of his coaching staff to put him in the best chance to succeed as a college football player and as an NFL prospect shows that he’s coachable and bought into the program.

5. He doesn’t forget

Back in 2016, Ohio State was set to face Baker Mayfield’s Oklahoma Sooners. Before the game, they had a not-so-smart freshman quarterback say that Ohio State had a “basic defense” and that Mayfield would “light them up.” After throttling the Sooners by three touchdowns down in Norman, Holmes took this sign onto the field and flaunted it.

Jayln Holmes will have NONE of that basic defense. pic.twitter.com/v49qvu4ydT

— Jerod Smalley (@JerodNBC4) September 18, 2016
Any concerns about Holmes?

The first two reasons why you should be excited about Holmes, could be the two reasons why you should be concerned about Holmes. Yes, Holmes was behind a couple of generational talents and other quality future NFL players at Ohio State, but the NFL is the best of the best. If he can’t consistently crack the lineup in college, what makes people think that he’ll all of a sudden become a better professional? Only time will tell.

Another one of Ohio State’s rushmen is heading to the NFL.

The collection of defensive line talent at Ohio State in recent years has been impressive, especially since Larry Johnson— one of the greatest d-line coaches in history— joined the team’s staff. Now, another one of the Buckeye rushmen has made the next step to the NFL, as former OSU defensive end Jalyn Holmes has been selected by the Minnesota Vikings with the No. 102 pick of the fourth round of the NFL Draft.

In his four years in Columbus, the Norfolk, Va. native accumulated 84 tackles, and played in every game during his final three seasons. A two-time All-Big Ten honorable mention, Holmes had 14 tackles-for-loss while playing along side future pros including Michael Bennett, Adolphus Washington, Joey Bosa, Noah Spence, Sam Hubbard, and Tyquan Lewis.

Holmes possesses surprising power for his 6’5, 270-pound frame. However, getting on an NFL strength program will certainly help in that department. His length gives him natural leverage against offensive linemen, but he doesn’t have the inherent speed that you would want from someone coming off of the edge. However, once he is able to get moving downfield, he does have straight-line speed.

Congratulations to Jalyn for fulfilling his dream of playing at the next level.

5 Buckeyes are already off the board, but a lot more are hoping to hear their name on Day 3.

It’s been a good haul for Ohio State thus far in the 2018 NFL Draft, with five Buckeyes getting drafted in the first three rounds — making it 38 total draft picks in Urban Meyer’s six seasons in Columbus. The three-round total is also the most for any school so far in 2018.

Saturday’s final four rounds will get underway at noon ET, and there’s still plenty of Buckeye talent left on the board. Some of the top names still available out of Ohio State include OT Jamarco Jones and DE Jalyn Holmes, plus some guys expected to go near the end of the afternoon like QB J.T. Barrett, LB Chris Worley, SAF Damon Webb, and TE Marcus Baugh.

We’ll be keeping track as more Ohio State alumni make their way to the NFL, and will follow-up with all of the fun undrafted free agent news.

Here’s everything that’s happened ahead of Saturday’s final rounds:

Buckeyes picked in Round 1

No. 4 - Denzel Ward, Cleveland Browns

No. 21 - Billy Price, Cincinnati Bengals

Buckeyes picked in Round 2

No. 64 - Tyquan Lewis, Indianapolis Colts

Buckeyes picked in Round 3

No. 73 - Jerome Baker, Miami Dolphins

No. 77 - Sam Hubbard, Cincinnati Bengals

Several Buckeyes are already off the board, but how many more will hear their names called by day’s end?

Now that the first three rounds of the 2018 NFL Draft are over, we are in for a long afternoon of waiting for Buckeyes to hear their names called. Round 4 will get underway on Saturday at Noon ET on the NFL Network, ESPN/ESPN 2 and ABC, with 5, 6, and 7 to follow.

Heading into the final day of the draft, so far five Buckeyes have been selected, starting with No. 4 overall, Denzel Ward to the Cleveland Browns. Billy Price also ended up as a first round pick, taken at No. 21 by the Cincinnati Bengals -- who also picked Sam Hubbard at No. 77. In between those Bengal picks, were Tyquan Lewis to the Colts at No. 64 and Jerome Baker to the Dolphins at No. 73.

Each team has five minutes per pick in Rounds 4-6, and four minutes in Round 7, so things will speed up throughout the afternoon. But, as soon as Mr. Irrelevant is drafted at No. 256, the undrafted free agent market will open, and several other Buckeyes could find themselves heading to rookie camp.
