The Buckeyes will face No. 1 Long Beach State on Thursday in the semis.

Just three matches away from an NCAA Championship three-peat, the No. 6 Ohio State (25-5) men’s volleyball team had to fight off a feisty UC Irvine squad (21-10) to win the quarterfinal matchup 25-19, 22-25, 25-23, 22-25, 16-14. The Buckeyes will now advance to the NCAA semifinals.

The match against the Anteaters was back-and-forth throughout, with neither team able to win consecutive sets. With the match, and a spot in the semifinals on the line, UC Irvine took a 9-7 lead in the fifth set, before the Buckeyes tied it after redshirt-senior Nick Laffin had a kill, and Irvine’s Dante Chakravorti committed an attack error.

From there, the teams traded points until it was tied at 14. After a block by Laffin and junior setter Sanil Thomas— who finished with 57 assists—, Irvine’s Aaron Koubi committed an error giving the Buckeyes a match point.

To finish off the Anteaters, Szerszen hit a crosscourt shot that snuck just inside the line to give the Buckeyes the win. Senior All-American Szerszen and redshirt-freshman Jake Hanes each had 22 kills for OSU on the match.

Let's take another look at match point.

— OSU Men's Volleyball (@OhioState_MVB) May 2, 2018

Against UC Irvine, Hanes tied the program’s all-time single-match record with eight service aces. He matched former Buckeye Jason Tobkin’s mark set in 2011 against Princeton. After the game, legendary Ohio State head coach Pete Hanson suggested that Hanes might have stepped up a bit, because he didn’t want to let the seniors down; the freshman didn’t disagree.

“This is their last year, so, I know [from] my senior year in high school, it sucks when you lose that last point,” Hanes said. “So I’m trying to fight as hard as I can for these guys who aren’t going to get another chance once this is over.”

After the game, Hanson said of the victory, “In the end, it comes down to making a couple of plays at the right time and we had some guys do that, but it wasn’t for lack of UC Irvine trying to stop us.”

He continued, “Our guys now have a chance to play another day and that’s kind of what we talked about in the locker room was get through this one today and come back on Thursday, play another good team and see what happens.”

With the victory, the Buckeyes improve their overall NCAA Tournament record to 16-22. Despite their sub-.500 mark historically, OSU is currently on a seven-match unbeaten streak in the NCAA Tournament, and the Buckeyes have won 16-straight postseason matches overall. If those aren’t things to celebrate, I don’t know what are.

The Buckeyes will face the top-ranked Long Beach State 49ers on Thursday, May 3 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on Thursday in Los Angeles inside Pauley Pavilion. The other semifinal will consist of No. 2 BYU and UCLA.

Is Ohio State set to take over Texas once again?

The Ohio State Buckeyes have had a complicated relationship with the state of Texas in the past few recruiting cycles. The Buckeyes dominated the state in the 2017 recruiting class, landing three of the best players in the state in JK Dobbins, Jeffrey Okudah and Baron Browning as the state’s flagship program struggled with a lame duck head coach.

2018 was a different story, however, as Urban Meyer’s star disciple Tom Herman reclaimed the state, and Ohio State pulled in just one Texas product (Matthew Baldwin) while missing on top targets like Anthony Cook and Brennan Eagles to the Longhorns.

While it seemed like the tides had fully turned towards Herman, an awful offense and disappointing 2017 campaign have once again opened the state’s borders, and Ohio State is looking to take advantage.

Ohio State landed their first Texan on Sunday, when five-star receiver Garrett Wilson spurned the Longhorns for Columbus. Wilson also said something interesting Sunday night, as it relates to Ohio State’s efforts in Texas.

Buckeye Nation... if you think i ain’t bringing some Texas boys with me, you’re wrong. So happy to be apart of the family, Go Bucks!

— Garrett Wilson (@GarrettWilson_V) April 30, 2018

Wilson wasn’t the only one to notice this phenomenon, and current Buckeyes like the aforementioned Okudah, as well as Wilson’s former and future quarterback Baldwin had some thoughts as well.

Today, let’s take a look at what these comments could mean, and see if Ohio State could be the kings of the hill in the Lone Star State once again in 2019.

Grant Gunnell

Perhaps the most likely of the bunch is also the most crucial to Ohio State’s class. Gunnell is far and away Ohio State’s top target at quarterback for 2019, and has been made a huge priority by Ryan Day and Urban Meyer.

Gunnell visited campus recently, and many thought he was possibility going to commit, but decided instead to hold off. Ohio State does lead at this point, but will have to hold that lead until at least after the Elite 11 competition in June.

Gunnell is ranked No. 96 nationally, third among quarterbacks, and 13th in his home state. While Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and Oregon still have a shot, my pick in this one is Ohio State.

Gunnell is a departure from Ohio State’s usual quarterback type, and that may be a good thing. Day has been pushing hard for a more pass heavy offense, and with quarterbacks like Dwayne Haskins and Matthew Baldwin already on the roster, he has chance to show some proof of concept to Gunnell as well as some receivers.

Elijah Higgins

Higgins is a newer name to the Buckeye recruiting universe. He’s ranked as the No. 25 receiver and a top-150 player nationally, and is really starting to look at Ohio State as a realistic option, despite receiving an offer just a few months ago. Ohio State has pushed hard to make that happen, and talks to Higgins nearly every day.

He was also on campus recently, and that visit changed the dynamics in his recruitment, as he had a fantastic time. Higgins had some questions about the school, and while nearly all of those were answered, I still feel that Ohio State is behind Stanford and Texas in this one, but it’s not out of reach by any means.

Higgins is one of Ohio State’s top receivers in this class, and for good reason. He’s a great complimentary player to Garrett Wilson. He’s a big bodied wideout at 6-foot-3, 215 pounds, and would serve as a fantastic possession receiver alongside the more play making oriented Wilson.

If he’s still a realistic possibility by signing day is yet to be seen, but at this point, Ohio State is firmly cemented as a contender. If Higgins is willing to wait until November or December to make his decision, and Ohio State can showcase a great passing attack, that will be huge in this one.

Erick Young

Erick Young is a bit of a confusing recruit, in terms of where he may be headed. Ranked No. 56 nationally and seventh among cornerbacks, Young is generally expected to stay close to his hometown of Richmond, Texas. With that being said, Texas A&M or Oklahoma are seen as viable landing spots—but he is genuinely interested in Ohio State.

Young was a player Wilson mentioned by name as someone he wants to bring to Columbus, and in all regards, Young has been very receptive to Ohio State. The only problem is that the 6-foot-1 cornerback hasn’t been to Columbus yet, and until he makes that visit, it’s tough to say that he’s a real option.

Ohio State was included in his recent top six, along with A&M, Oklahoma, Alabama, USC, and TCU a few weeks ago, and I feel that Ohio State is in his top three, with A&M and Oklahoma, though they are currently third. If the Buckeyes can get him on campus, I’ll believe the chance. Until then, consider me skeptical.

Noah Cain

I was hesitant to include Noah in this list, because Noah isn’t technically a Texas recruit anymore. Noah transferred from Guyer High School to IMG Academy in Florida to get better coaching, so he won’t count as a true Texas recruit for the Buckeyes, but they will still face off with familiar Texas teams, and he does have a very good relationship with the top recruits in the state.

Cain has seemingly dropped a bit on Ohio State’s board, as the Buckeyes added Steele Chambers and Sampson James in the past few weeks to fill the running back spot, but there is still interest in Cain. He’s the No. 51 ranked player in the country, and if Ohio State does add any more running backs in this class, it’ll be him.

Unlike Young, Cain has visited Columbus, but to have a real chance, they’ll have to get him back on campus for an official visit. I do expect that to happen, probably for a game in the fall. At this point, I think Cain is likely headed to Texas, but Ohio State still has a very real shot to land him.

Quick Hits

LGHL Ohio State’s Urban Meyer has a new focus, and it comes off the field

Coach Meyer has long been worried about on the field problems, but his focus has shifted over the years.

“This is a topic of conversation among my colleagues in the profession now. It’s constant now. Fifteen years ago, no. Back then it was, Tell me about the spread offense. Tell me about punt return. Now it’s about the mental and well-being of your players.”

- Urban Meyer via Bruce Feldman, Sports Illustrated

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer has had a well-documented history of his competitiveness and desire to win games. It essentially drove him out of Florida due to health issues often caused by the stress to be perfect. Obviously, that Urban Meyer is long gone, and though the competitive drive remains, he’s figured out how to balance his time and family with his job in football. Now, Meyer is doing even more to learn and promote things regarding mental health. Bruce Feldman did a wonderful article on it and how it affects players such as defensive tackle Robert Landers.

Meyer makes a great point when he says that mental health in sports is getting so much more awareness than before. Look no further than Kevin Love from the Cleveland Cavaliers or DeMar Derozan for the Toronto Raptors, both of which opened up about their struggles with mental health. Meyer has instilled an importance in the topics similar to that and has “Real Life Wednesdays” every week where they have a speaker and talk openly about problems they face.

“You can win a lot of games in any conference with the ability to develop players (look at Michigan), but Indiana will never be INDIANA again without recruiting a whole bunch of big-name players. ”

- Marcus Hartman, Dayton Daily News

We got a small glimpse at what could be last season when Ohio State and Indiana met on the basketball court. Buckeyes coach Chris Holtmann and Indiana Hoosiers coach Archie Miller have begun the process of rekindling an old rivalry between Ohio State and Indiana and with the recent recruiting success for both teams, things could heat up quickly. The Hoosiers picked up Romeo Langford, a five-star shooting guard. Holtmann, meanwhile has had similar pickups, most recently getting Alonzo Gaffney for the 2019 class.

Holtmann has also had success with getting transfers from other teams. Based of last season alone, Holtmann has the edge right now in the rivalry as he led Ohio State to a 25-win season, while the Hoosiers and Miller struggled, finishing 16-15. Either way, both coaches have a bright future ahead of them and there will almost certainly be plenty of high-stake matchups between the two in the coming years.

“And I think there’s a really good chance that what truly has him energized right now, both as a recruiter and in getting ready to contend on the field again this season, is erasing the painful, puzzling memory of what happened last November at Iowa.”

- Austin Ward, Land of 10

Has Clemson helped Urban Meyer get some of his motivation and inspired him at all? The answer is probably not, but it’s still an interesting question. I think Austin Ward of Land of 10 makes a great point when he says what’s probably motivating him the most right now is the loss to Iowa last season, when the Hawkeyes dismantled the Buckeyes in Kinnick Stadium. That loss essentially knocked Ohio State out of the national title picture, after the Buckeyes had previously dropped a game to Oklahoma at home.

Alabama and Clemson provide a nice benchmark for Meyer to match however, as both have won championships since the Buckeyes last hoisted the trophy in 2014. The Tigers have beaten Ohio State both times they faced each other under Meyer, so it’s understandable to think that Dabo Swinney might be a thorn in Meyer’s side. Hopefully the Buckeyes will be able to exact some revenge or find the peak of college football again this season.
