A member of the class of 2020, Hubbard comes from the same high school as QB Jack Miller.

The first day of the quiet period seemed like just that for the Ohio State Buckeyes, that is until Wednesday evening when a big BOOOM came from out west, as 2020 four-star running back Darvon Hubbard committed to the program. Though currently at Scottsdale, Az.’s Chaparral High School, Hubbard is a native of Akron.

According to 247 Sports’ composite rankings, Hubbard is the sixth best player in the 2020 class coming out of the state of Arizona, and 23rd running back in the class overall. He held offers from Auburn, Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Michigan State, Arizona, Michigan, Penn State, and more.

Since the commitment of Jack Miller, the quarterback and teammate of Hubbard at Chaparral, it seemed like Miller would be the biggest recruiter to try and get his teammate to make the move east as well.

*In a very Ron Howard narrator’s voice: He did.

Ohio State now has six members in their 2020 class; in the national rankings, the ‘20 class is now No. 2 in the country—and is the best in the Big Ten.

Interested in seeing what Hubbard brings to the table? Take a look at his highlight reel below.

LGHL Dwayne Haskins has been quietly doing everything right to lead Ohio State in 2018

Dwayne Haskins has been quietly doing everything right to lead Ohio State in 2018
Alexis Chassen
via our friends at Land-Grant Holy Land
Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

879146406.jpg.0.jpg

It might not be in the headlines, but Haskins is earning the respect and trust of his teammates.

“It’s the job of a leader — earn trust. With all due respect to other sports, this is the most unique position in all of sport. You have to understand the entire defense, have to understand all other 10 players. He has to make decisions in split seconds. And, by the way, he’s got people like [Nick] Bosa trying to tear his throat out. It’s very unique position, but he’s done very well.”

-Urban Meyer via Kyle Rowland, The Blade

Even before J.T. Barrett’s last snap as a Buckeye, fans, analysts and media members have speculated about who would take over in his stead. As far back as last spring, the Joe Burrow vs. Dwayne Haskins storylines flooded spring camp headlines, and up until Burrow broke his hand, the No. 2 behind Barrett was never official.

Burrow’s injury would jettison Haskins to second-place on the depth chart, where he ended up claiming 171 total snaps during the 2017 season. Sure, a majority of those were in garbage time, but when Barrett went down against Michigan, Haskins had an opportunity eerily similar to Cardale Jones many moons ago.

When Haskins took over against TTUN, he completed 6-of-7 pass attempts for 94 yards, in addition to his 24 yards on three runs. It isn’t the most impressive stat-line, but the backup QB didn’t need to win the game on his own, he had running backs and receivers who could carry the ball into the end zone and a defense that few team’s could challenge.

At the end of the day, he led Ohio State to a comeback win against their biggest rival, securing yet another pair of Gold Pants for the team and keeping Urban Meyer’s undefeated streak against them in tact.

“He’s a good player,” Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh said at Big Ten Media Days, according to The Blade. “Stature in the pocket was different. He made some good throws, and he was athletic getting out of the pocket. He looks like a fine quarterback. He played very well. That’s not an easy thing to do, coming off the bench and playing good — and he did.”

With his future still not secure following his performance in The Game, Haskins finally was able to breathe a sigh of relief when teammate — and good friend — Joe Burrow ultimately chose to transfer to LSU. Not that there isn’t still a QB competition in Columbus (helloooo Tate Martell) but Haskins has stepped up into a leadership role in the months since the 2017 season ended.

“You can see him stepping out of his shell, trying to get out of his comfort zone, and trying to adapt to that leader we need him to be,” wideout Parris Campbell said, according to Rowland’s article. “He’s just trying to adjust to that standard. It’s exciting to see because some guys are like, ‘It’s my show now. It’s whatever.’ But he’s actually doing the things he needs to be doing and trying to develop positively as a leader.”

So while there are still some question marks surrounding Haskins and how the Buckeye offense will look with him at the helm, he’s been quietly doing everything it takes to be a leader and quarterback at Ohio State.

The 2018 regular season doesn’t open with a bunch of cupcakes, like most seasons, so Haskins will have a pretty big test right away with Oregon State and TCU within the first three games.

“Jim Harbaugh is the 3rd highest paid coach in football. Tell me why? ... You make more than Urban Meyer. Have you beat him yet?”

@ShannonSharpe pic.twitter.com/s8bwiGJ9c9

— FOX Sports (@FOXSports) July 24, 2018

Speaking of whooping up on Michigan...

In the FOX Sports preview above, Shannon Sharpe goes in on why Jim Harbaugh absolutely does not deserve to be the third-highest paid head coach in college football.

It’s hard to argue with so many valid points: he’s never beaten Ohio State, he can’t beat Michigan State regularly, he hasn’t taken his team to the Big Ten Championship game, and only plays in mediocre bowl games.

The whole 2:20 of the rant is priceless, from calling Harbaugh “Khaki Pants” to describing Michigan’s offense as “anemic, pathetic, mundane”.

Nick Bosa enters his junior season for the Ohio State Buckeyes as my No. 1 overall prospect for the 2019 NFL Draft. And he was an easy choice.”

-Chris Trapasso, CBS Sports

Stop me if you’ve heard this one: Nick Bosa is expected to be the overall No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft next year. As we inch closer to the season, more focus will shift to the next draft class, and more people will be talking about Bosa — as if enough aren’t talking about him already.

Trapasso’s pretty-early Big Board for the 2019 draft includes more than just the one Buckeye though, in fact, he names five in his Top 100 prospects heading into the season.

While Bosa sits at the top of the list, Dre’Mont Jones was considered a Top 10 pick (No. 9), with the defensive tackle getting some early attention among the draft-niks. Trapasso also includes Ohio State receiver Parris Campbell (No. 68), linebacker Tuf Borland (No. 82), and offensive tackles Isaiah Prince (No. 93).

It’s still pretty early to say whether these five will finish the 2018 season ranked among the best in the country, but it wouldn’t be entirely surprising for the Top 100 to include even more Buckeyes in the early months on 2019.

After Isaiah Prince’s first season at Ohio State, where the struggles were many and often, he’s really worked hard to become a staple on the O-line in the years since. To see him now sitting among some of the top draft prospects is a true testament to just how much he’s developed during his time in the scarlet and gray.

Buckeye Bits from the NFL

On Malik Hooker being placed on the Colts’ PUP list — Andrew Walker, Colts.com

“Ballard said the team is waiting until the nine-month mark post-surgery — which will be around Aug. 9 or 10 — to re-visit Hooker’s availability, but he doesn’t, at this time, anticipate the second-year safety will miss much, if any, time to start the regular season.”
On getting to know Billy Price off the field — Rebecca Tobak, Cincy Jungle

What team are you most excited to face in the NFL? Pittsburgh. Just because being local all my people back home are Pittsburgh fans and there’s a bunch of OSU guys there like Cam Heyward and Ryan Shazier.”
On Pat Elflein being added to the Vikings’ PUP list — Eric J. Thompson, Daily Norseman

“The team announced on Wednesday morning that Pat Elflein will begin Training Camp on the PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) list. Elflein is still recovering from the fractured ankle he suffered in the NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Elflein will be required to be cleared by team doctors before returning to camp.”

Rose Bowl (Official Thread)

THE LOST WORLD

KzH3vkX.gif

The name "Gerald Freeny" probably doesn't ring a bell.

If you're old enough to remember when the most under-appreciated moment of each college football season was hearing TBDBITL blasting California Here I Come as players danced off the field following a conference-clinching victory, it's a name you would be looking forward to learning - and quickly forgetting - during the postgame celebration. Like "Ronald Conzonire" in 2009, "W.H. Griest Jr." in 1996 or "Don Judson" in 1984.

Freeny is the current president of the Tournament of Roses. He had a prime speaking slot yesterday in Chicago at the Big Ten's 47th Annual Kickoff Luncheon as Tournament of the Roses presidents often do, and in a few months he will have a starring role in one of 2018's classic college football moments when he personally delivers an invitation to one lucky Big Ten team to ring in the new year in Pasadena and participate in The Granddaddy of Them All™.

His invite will go to the Big Ten champion - unless that team is already headed to the Cotton Bowl or the Orange Bowl, this season's CFP semifinal sites. In that case, Gerald will be inviting another team from the conference to face the Pac 12 representative. That opponent will be the conference champion, unless they're already committed to the Cotton or Orange for the same aspirational reasons.

No matter what happens though, the Rose Bowl is getting Biggie and Pac back together again, as our great-great-grandfathers did. It's happening, and it will be a clash between champ/champ, champ/runner-up, runner-up/champ or runner-up/runner-up. If either B1G or Pac send two teams to the CFP (there's a precedent for this) then you're looking at a 3rd place team getting the golden ticket to SoCal. It would be 7-5 Wisconsin going to Indy in 2012 to represent the Leaders Division all over again.

So that means the losers from the championship games held in Indianapolis and Santa Clara this December could end up facing each other in our most cherished bowl game. Recall that the winners of B1G and Pac 12 championship games from 2017 did face each other, but in Arlington, Texas on December 29, not Pasadena on New Year's Day.

The Granddaddy is old, charming and still handsome as hell, but he's lost a step.

Last season the "Rose Bowl" ended up being the Cotton Bowl, which is no longer played at the actual Cotton Bowl. Oklahoma faced Georgia in the actual Rose Bowl in an appearance that gave the Sooners more Rose Bowls in the current century than the Buckeyes, who own nine Big Ten crowns in said century yet have graced the Granddaddy just once.

It was just the latest instance over the past 40 years where Ohio State did everything necessary by ancient standards to have TBDBITL play California Here I Come before meeting the Gerald Freeny of that season, and still ending up in another state for the holidays. Since Woody Hayes was fired, the only thing that's been more elusive to Columbus than B1G Coach of the Year awards is that blessed trip to Pasadena.

THE OKLAHOMA SOONERS HAVE BEEN TO MORE ROSE BOWLS THIS CENTURY THAN THE OHIO STATE BUCKEYES.
.
.
.
The B1G champions from Columbus have missed out on the Rose Bowl a dozen times since Woody left the sideline, for a variety of reasons ranging from fortunate to self-inflicted:

  • Wrong side of the "Who Went Last" rule (Iowa 1981, Wisconsin 1993 & 1998)
  • Wrong side of the head-to-head tiebreaker (Michigan 1986, Penn State 2008, Wisconsin 2010)
  • Accepted invitation to Fiesta Bowl for the BCS Title instead (Oklahoma/Washington State 2002)
  • Locked out of BCS Title Game (Texas/USC 2005)
  • Accepted invitation to BCS Title Game instead (Michigan 2006, Illinois 2007)
  • Accepted invitation to Sugar Bowl for CFP National Semifinal (Florida State/Oregon 2014)
  • Locked out of CFP National Semifinal (Oklahoma/Georgia 2017)
Twice Ohio State would have gone to the Rose Bowl had it simply lost more (2006, 2007) but that would have meant forfeiting BCS title opportunities. In both cases the B1G representative that went in the Buckeyes' place got - football term - aggressively depantsed. But they still got to go, and by ancient standards that's the best bowl trip of them all.
.
.
.
continued

Entire article: https://www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio-state-football/2018/07/94537/the-lost-world

Sad, but now with the CFP the Rose Bowl (to the B1G winner) isn't what it use to be.

This man deserves nothing but good things and happiness for the rest of his life.

It’s been a tumultuous week in Buckeye Nation (and it’s only Wednesday). So, why don’t we start the morning off with some good news? Yesterday, Ohio State and Pittsburgh Steeler legend Ryan Shazier announced on Twitter that his fiancee Michelle Rodriguez is expecting the couple’s first child in January. Shazier has a son from a previous relationship.

The plan god has placed around this family is very bright. So we’re so excited to let everyone know we have a wonderful blessing coming and I can’t wait to welcome another beautiful Shazier. #shalieve #boyorgirl

Thanks @emmai_alaquiva for capturing this beautiful moment!! pic.twitter.com/LzjPQ0zkxc

— Ryan Shazier (@RyanShazier) July 24, 2018

A beloved figure in both Columbus and Pittsburgh, Shazier suffered a horrific back injury on Dec. 4 in a “Monday Night Football” game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Shazier suffered a spinal contusion that left him without use of his legs. He underwent a spine stabilization surgery, and has been on the road to recovery ever since.

Shazier served as an honorary coach for the OSU spring game in April, and then made an appearance at the NFL Draft that brought tears to the eyes of millions of football fans, as he walked across the stage to announce that the Steelers had taken safety Terrell Edmunds with the 28th overall pick.

While he has officially been ruled out of playing in the 2018 season, Shazier has been very open about his intention to return to the field once he is fully recovered. While the thought of the beloved former Buckeye suiting up to play football again makes me a little nervous, if anybody can overcome an injury like this, it’s Ryan Shazier.

Congratulations to Ryan and Michelle! We’ll send a scarlet and gray onesie for Christmas!

LGHL Quiet period arrives ahead of huge weekend for Ohio State

Quiet period arrives ahead of huge weekend for Ohio State
Patrick Mayhorn
via our friends at Land-Grant Holy Land
Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

6_8152652.0.jpg

Will the Buckeyes make some moves during this upcoming quiet period?

After a few weeks of dead period, in which no face-to-face contact is allowed between coaches and recruits, we entered a quiet period at midnight. This is a huge deal for Ohio State (more on this soon), but before we get too far into it, what exactly is the quiet period? What’s the difference between quiet and dead? SBNation’s Bud Elliott has you covered:

“The quiet period tightens things a bit more, preventing any off-campus contact or viewing. Visits to the college’s campus and written or electronic communications are still permitted. Coaches often try to have prospects visit campus unofficially during this time in the spring and early summer, so that they can become familiar with campus.”

The quiet period is a short one, just from midnight (July 25) to midnight next Tuesday night, but it’s a crucial one for Ohio State. They’ve been waiting for this for weeks, because of a few recruits with quickly approaching announcement dates: Zach Harrison and Marcus Washington.

The Buckeyes also have several massive visits scheduled this week, that just happen to coincide very nicely with the ending of this quiet period, before another dead period takes over that’ll take us to the end of August. That visit includes some of Ohio State’s biggest 2020 targets, including guard Jakai Moore today, and Darrion Henry, Tre Williams, Rashawn Williams, Rakim Jarrett, Deamonte Trayanum and Michael Drennan this weekend.

While I don’t think of ton of those guys are on commitment watch, a few are worth paying attention to, specifically Henry, Jarrett and Drennan. My guess is that Henry joins the 2020 class this weekend. That may not be the end of the booms in the coming weeks either, because Ohio State will be in heavy contact with Marcus Washington and Zach Harrison, who are set to commit Aug. 7 and Aug. 14, respectively. I think Ohio State lands both of them.

First?

It’s not too often that Ohio State is the first team to offer a recruit. It’s much more Urban Meyer’s style to notice offers from smaller schools in the MAC, or mid-level Big Ten programs like Indiana, Purdue, or Michigan, and then swoop in and extend an offer later on in the process. That wasn’t the case with Indiana defensive tackle Dane Middlebrook.

Honored to receive my first offer from THE ⭕️hio State University‼️#Gobucks and thanks to @BHSdogsfootball @OhioStateFB @TrenchGAME @SWiltfong247 @PlayBookAthlete @roblanders96 pic.twitter.com/8odE0pZZXU

— Dane Middlebrook Jr (@DaneM2020) July 24, 2018

Middlebrook, a 6-foot-1, 310-pound class of 2020 prospect looks like a future nose tackle, and Ohio State is apparently very, very high on his game. He camped at Ohio State in June, and has been on campus several times, so the staff is very familiar with him. They’ve been considering this offer for weeks, and they were comfortable leading the pack here.

Middlebrook isn’t yet ranked in 2020, but with an Ohio State offer on board, he will likely be ranked shortly. Ball State, Indiana, Michigan State, Missouri and Purdue have all expressed interest as well. It’s not clear if this offer is commitable yet, and I imagine it’ll be a few months until we know if it is, but depending on that, Middlebrook could be a Buckeye really soon.
