Al Washington, Ohio State still recruiting Qian Magwood

Last Saturday, Ohio State assistant coach Al Washington was spotted at Walnut Ridge High School outside of Columbus — where Qian Magwood, one of Ohio’s top two-sport athletes, was playing basketball.

We’ve written about Magwood here on Lettermen Row in the past. He’s a really good athlete, but on the football field, he’s sort of a man between positions. He wants to play receiver in college, but Ohio State and other schools believe his best future could be on defense.

After the decision to cancel the official visit of Jahmyr Gibbs last week as a result of scholarship numbers being too tight, many wondered why Ohio State would then immediately head out and visit another 2020 athlete.

That’s a fair question, but it shouldn’t be expected that an offer is imminent for Magwood at this point. It’s more likely that the Buckeyes are working to maintain a relationship with the 6-foot-1, 195-pound athlete in the event that Cameron Martinez decides against signing with the program next month. Magwood is not expected to make any of his own recruiting decisions until Feb. 5 as well.

That plan could change, though, if Magwood is offered by Michigan State in the near future, as some speculate will happen. Either way, the Buckeyes do not intend to add another 2020 prospect to the school unless Martinez decides to go a different direction. That’s not a guarantee that Magwood would be the guy to fill that spot if Martinez were to do that, but the 3-star local prospect would certainly be on the short list.

RB Chris Evans practiced with Michigan last month, and ‘looked good’



Running back Chris Evans, reinstated by the University of Michigan after he was academically suspended last year, practiced with the school’s football team last month.

In a meeting with reporters on Thursday at the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association clinic, Michigan football head coach Jim Harbaugh said Evans participated in three December practices with the team before it departed for Florida to play in the Citrus Bowl.

They were the same series of practices in which six Michigan early enrollees were present for, and in the case of five of them, actually did some physical activity.

“He looked good,” Harbaugh said. "He looked good in the three days he was able to practice. That’s probably another thing to talk about at another time, but it’s a good story.

“You can be destroyed, but you can’t be defeated. Only if you quit. And he did not do that.”

Harbaugh said he was “optimistic” and “excited” about Evans’ return, which bolsters an already deep running back room at Michigan. The Indianapolis, Ind., native rushed for 614 yards and four touchdowns as a freshman in 2016, then followed up with 685 yards and six touchdowns as a sophomore in 2017.

Urban Meyer’s first full class was an instrumental part of Ohio State's 2014 national championship season. Five-star safety Vonn Bell was the class's top-rated signee as Meyer beat out the SEC for the prized defender. Middletown athlete Jalin Marshall was also a five-star and – believe it or not – Joey Bosa was a measly four-star and the class's third-best signee.

Four-star tailback Ezekiel Elliott is now perhaps the best pure rusher in the National Football League. The class also included Eli Apple, J.T. Barrett, Gareon Conley, Marcus Baugh, Billy Price, and Tyquan Lewis. If you're a fan of the productive three-star signings, then you'll be happy to know that things worked out quite well for both Darron Lee and Chris Worley.

The class did include a few signees that didn't work out so well. Mike Mitchell was a freakishly athletic linebacker, but a family member's health problems led to a transfer to Texas Tech. He has since moved to Florida, bulked up to 270 pounds, and most recently played for the NAIA's Southeastern University.

Dayton's Cameron Burrows was the No. 2 player in Ohio behind Marshall. Injuries plagued his Ohio State career which ended with 31 tackles for four pass breakups. Centerville's Evan Lisle eventually transferred to Duke after spending his time in Columbus as a backup lineman. Cleveland's Donovan Munger saw his career come to an unfortunate end due to a blood clot issue.

Here's hoping the 2020 class is even better!!!!

Attendance for the seven games run by the College Football Playoff dropped to an all-time low this postseason, halfway through the CFP's initial contract that created the New Year's Six games and the CFP National Championship. The attendance at those seven games were down a cumulative 42,500 fans or 8 percent from a playoff-era high in 2015.

That's an average decline of 6,069 fans per game across the Rose Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, Orange Bowl, Peach Bowl, Sugar Bowl and CFP National Championship. A sellout crowd of 76,885 Monday watched LSU defeat Clemson at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in the title game. That brought the CFP attendance total to 492,220, down 3 percent from the previous season.

For the fourth consecutive year, four of the seven CFP games decreased in attendance from the previous season.

"It's exactly what Nick Saban has been saying," said Wright Waters, outgoing Football Bowl Association executive director. "We've created a group of schools that their goal is to be in the playoff."

The biggest declines this season came in the Cotton Bowl and Sugar Bowl, each of which featured a non-traditional team and was not a semifinal game.

Holtmann said it would be a day-to-day thing, they'd keep it in-house, but that they showed good attitudes and "supported their teammates in the locker room." Here's hoping the suspensions are brief and Chris pressed the right buttons to motivate them.
