Now that the draft has taken place and the schedules have been released, we know where the Buckeyes in the NFL will be starting the 2023 season

Nearly every game in the NFL these days features at least one former Ohio State player. While we aren’t going to go through every game in the first week of the NFL season, we are going to highlight some of the storylines involving Ohio State players on the season’s first weekend of the regular season.

Houston Texas v. Baltimore Ravens | Sept. 10 - 1 p.m. ET

After being selected with the second overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, C.J. Stroud’s first NFL game will definitely test him. Even though Stroud isn’t officially Houston’s starting quarterback, it is hard to imagine the Texans would take Stroud so high in the draft only to see him sit behind Davis Mills, who was Houston’s starting quarterback for most of last season. It could be a rough start for Stroud, who will see a drop-off in terms of receivers than what he was working with at Ohio State.

Lining up on the opposite sideline in this game are a couple of former Buckeyes. Following a 2022 season that was shortened because of recovery from a knee injury in 2021, J.K. Dobbins will look to regain the form he showed in the 2020 season, where he rushed for 805 yards and nine scores as a rookie. Along with Dobbins, the Ravens also have linebacker Malik Harrison. While Harrison isn’t a starter, he did appear in 17 games for Baltimore last year.

San Francisco 49ers v. Pittsburgh Steelers | Sept. 10 - 1 p.m. ET

There will be a couple of great Ohio State defensive linemen opening up the season in Pittsburgh this year. The Steelers have veteran defensive tackle Cameron Heyward, who will be entering his 13th season in the NFL. While Pittsburgh has a veteran nearing the end of his career, San Francisco defensive end Nick Bosa is entering the prime of his career. Bosa registered 18.5 sacks last year in his fourth season in the NFL.

Tennessee Titans v. New Orleans Saints | Sept. 10 - 1 p.m. ET

With questions at quarterback and wide receiver, it could be a long year for former Ohio State defensive lineman and assistant coach Mike Vrabel. The same can’t be said for the New Orleans Saints, who signed free agent quarterback Derek Carr during the offseason. Carr will have a couple former Buckeyes to throw to. Chris Olave caught 72 passes for over 1,100 yards as a rookie in 2022.

The biggest question for New Orleans is how much are they going to get from Michael Thomas. After catching 470 passes in his first four years in the league, Thomas has played in just 10 games and caught 56 passes over the last three years. If Thomas can stay healthy, the Saints have a scary combo at wide receiver, but it’s hard to have any faith that Thomas can stay on the field after so many injury issues the last few years.

Arizona Cardinals v. Washington Commanders | Sept. 10 - 1 p.m. ET

It doesn’t seem likely that either team will be contending for a playoff spot this year. For Ohio State fans there are a few reasons to tune into this matchup, though. Paris Johnson Jr. will be making his NFL debut for the Arizona Cardinals, who traded up to take the Buckeye offensive lineman with the sixth overall pick in this year’s draft. Johnson could likely be seeing a lot of another former Buckeye, as Chase Young will be looking to stay injury free and put together a big year after the Commanders declined the fifth-year option on his rookie contract.

Along with Johnson and Young, a couple of other former Ohio Staters will be in uniform for Washington. The most notable Buckeye alum is Terry McLaurin, who has caught 299 passes and accumulated over 4,000 yards in his first four seasons in the NFL. Joining McLaurin on offense for the Commanders are fellow wide receiver Curtis Samuel, as well as offensive lineman Andrew Norwell.

Los Angeles Rams v. Seattle Seahawks | Sept. 10 - 4:25 p.m. ET

Following the early games on the first Sunday of the NFL regular season, Jaxon Smith-Njigba will make his NFL debut in Seattle. After being projected in the first half of the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft, the Ohio State wide receiver did slide just a little bit but fell into a great spot. The pressure on Smith-Njigba won’t be quite as high as some of the other spots he was being mocked to, since the Seahawks have D.K. Metcalf and Tyler Lockett at receiver.

Following their Super Bowl win over Cincinnati, the Los Angeles Rams really struggled in 2022. At this point, the Rams look like they are closer to a rebuild than contending for another Super Bowl. Los Angeles did trade away Jalen Ramsey in the offseason, but they do have former Ohio State safety Jordan Fuller in the secondary. Fuller and the rest of the defensive backfield will have their hands full trying to slow down Smith-Njigba and the rest of the Seattle receivers.

Green Bay Packers v. Chicago Bears | Sept. 10 - 4:25 p.m. ET

Now that Aaron Rodgers has been traded to the New York Jets, the NFC Central is truly up for grabs. Last year the Minnesota Vikings won the division, but there is a lot of chatter that the Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears will be in the mix this season. Despite not having very much quality talent around him last season, Justin Fields was able to throw for 17 touchdowns and rush for over 1,100 yards and 11 scores last year. Fields will likely put up bigger numbers this year after the Bears not only traded for wide receiver D.J. Moore but also upgraded their offensive line.

Buffalo Bills v. New York Jets | Sept. 11 - 8:15 p.m. ET

The first week of the 2023 NFL season wraps up with an AFC East battle. The Buffalo Bills, who don’t currently have any Ohio State Buckeyes on the roster, take on reigning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Garrett Wilson and the New York Jets. There will be a ton of hype around Wilson this year after the Jets traded for Aaron Rodgers. After catching 83 passes for 1,103 yards last season from Zach Wilson, Mike White, and Joe Flacco, Wilson, and the Jets have made a significant upgrade at quarterback.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: MAR 07 Ohio State Spring Practice

This week’s SB Nation Reacts’ survey puts you in charge of picking the Buckeye backfield

From now until preseason camp starts in August, Land-Grant Holy Land will be writing articles around a different theme every week. This week is all about what we would do if we were in charge of our favorite position group, team, conference, or sport. You can catch up on all of the Theme Week content here and all of our ”If I Was in Charge” articles here.

For this week’s themed survey, we are letting you put the whistle around your neck and pretend that you are in charge of what players start in the backfield for the Ohio State Buckeyes this season.

Question 1: Who would you start at quarterback this season?

Most onlookers — be they fans or beat reporters — seem to think this question has already been answered, at least from the coaches’ perspective. Kyle McCord is the veteran in the Ohio State quarterback room, having one more year in the program than Devin Brown, and having a start start under his belt.

But, due to Brown’s late-spring injury, he didn’t have the opportunity to show what he could do in the spring game. Both QBs came to Ohio State highly recruited — McCord was a five-star in 2021 (No. 28 nationally according to the 247Sports Composite rankings) and Brown was a high four-star coming in at No. 43 in 2022.

They have slightly different skill sets, though not dramatically so, with McCord being a bit more of a pocket passer than Brown, who has a slight edge when it comes to athleticism. I imagine that most people will side with McCord in this situation, after all, he has had the opportunity to sit behind C.J. Stroud for two years and learn from Ryan Day and Cory Dennis, but I could see some fans preferring to go with the younger guy this year.

If McCord plays well this season — and given OSU’s recent track record with QBs, it would be expected that he would — he could be off to the NFL in less than a year from now. Brown, no matter what happens this year, has at least one more year of college eligibility left, and I imagine that could be attractive in many ways; especially after having had pretty solid runs back the last two Buckeye quarterbacks to start two years in a row.

Also, while McCord is far from a statue in the pocket, with the offensive line issues that we have documented extensively here at LGHL, perhaps having a more mobile QB would help as well. Either way, let us know your preference in the survey below.

Question 2: Who would you start at running back this season?

This question, to me, is far more interesting than the one about the quarterback. Ohio State has found itself in an exciting, if not somewhat complicated, predicament with five legitimate contenders to carry the ball this fall, not including walk-on T.C. Caffey, Xavier Johnson (who seems to be firmly entrenched at wide receiver), or any fullback options.

Obviously, the top two options are TreVeyon Henderson and Miyan Williams, as these two jostled for the starting spot last season, trading injuries back and forth. However, in their stead, Dallan Hayden proved himself to be more than a serviceable replacement, and once Chip Trayannum moved back to RB from linebacker, he showed some life there as well.

There is also Evan Pryor, who was injured during last year’s fall camp and is still working his way back to full strength. While he arrived in Columbus as the second back in the 2021 recruiting class behind No. 1 RB Henderson, Pryor was still the No. 83 player in the country. A bit more slight and elusive than the other backs in the OSU room now, if healthy, Pryor could present a different type of back for the coaches to play with.

However, this decision will almost certainly come down to Henderson or Williams. And while it likely doesn’t matter, as the coaches will almost certainly rely heavily on both, the picking of the starter — at least from a fan’s perspective — is less about who gets to be in the backfield on the first offensive snap, and more about who will set the tone about what the running game will look like. Who will be the one to dictate the way that the team runs the ball this season?

Well, we’re asking you. Who do you think it should be?

2024 Ohio State commit Air Noland | via @AirNoland_ on Twitter

The Buckeyes also made the top schools lists for a trio of 2024 prospects.

A happy belated Mothers Day to all the Buckeye moms out there! While everyone was out celebrating their moms this weekend, Ohio State was busy making a host of recruiting headlines. Let’s check out the biggest stories from the trail over the past few days.

Noland earns Elite 11 Finals invite

The penultimate regional ahead of the Elite 11 Finals took place this weekend down in Atlanta, where two future Big Ten quarterbacks got a head start competing in the best rivalry in all of sports. Ohio State commit Air Noland battled it out against Michigan commit Jadyn Davis, the No. 6 and No. 4 QBs in the 247Sports Composite, respectfully. The pair really stole the show, but it was the future Buckeye who came out victorious in the end.

Working side by side for most of the afternoon, Noland ultimately separated himself with his consistency, and was awarded the lone invite to the Elite 11 Finals in Los Angeles next month. For more on the performance by the 6-foot-3 Georgia native, here is what 247Sports’ Cooper Petagna had to say of Noland’s outing at Carrollton High School:

“It’s difficult to top the cool and calm demeanor in which Noland operates. A quick triggered left handed quarterback, the Langston Hughes product doesn’t blow you away with his arm strength or velocity but unassumingly excels with his ball placement, accuracy, and touch. A quick twitch pocket passer with a knack for extending plays, Noland’s ability to be on time and on target, along with his high level of intuition is what makes him one of the cycle’s most polished prospects at the position”

Noland will now represent Ohio State at the three-day event in California, where he will compete against the best high school quarterbacks across the country — including former Ohio State commit Dylan Raiola. Future Buckeyes have faired incredibly well at the showcase in recent years, with each of the last two OSU starting quarterbacks in Justin Fields and C.J. Stroud winning the Elite 11 MVP. Both Devin Brown and Kyle McCord took part in the competition as well.

Narrowing the field

While the Elite 11 dominated the headlines over the weekend, Ohio State also made the top schools list for a trio of prospects in the 2024 class, including five-star defensive lineman Aydin Breland. The Mater Dei product currently ranks as the No. 4 DL and the No. 25 player overall according to 247Sports’ own rankings. Breland listed the Buckeyes among his top 10 schools on Friday night, where they will have to continue to battle the likes of Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Oregon and others to earn the California native’s pledge.

Elsewhere on the West Coast, Ohio State also made the top schools list for four-star cornerback Dakoda Fields. Cutting his offer sheet down from nearly 30 schools, the 6-foot-2 defensive back has narrowed things down to a top-seven, which includes the Buckeyes alongside Cal, Miami, Texas, Oregon, Washington and USC. Fields, the No. 10 CB and No. 78 overall player in the 2024 class on the 247Sports Composite, has two Crystal Ball predictions in favor of the Ducks.

Moving to the other side of the country, Ohio State also made the top schools list for four-star Virginia native Keylen Adams. A 6-foot-1 wide receiver, Adams comes in as the No. 26 WR and the No. 2 player in the Commonwealth on the 247Sports Composite. Cutting his offer sheet from over two dozen offers down to just five schools, the Buckeyes made the cut alongside Alabama, Pitt, South Carolina and Virginia Tech.

Brian Hartline has already landed his top two targets in the 2024 class, but if Adams is a guy that he wants, you can be sure they’ll be a big player here. His commitment is set for July 13.

Quick Hits

  • 2025 wide receiver Jamil Miller put out a list of camps he plans to attend this summer, and as a pass-catcher from Springfield, OH, it comes as no surprise that Ohio State is on the list. A 6-foot-3 in-state wideout, Miller will be on campus on June 20 looking to impress the coaching staff and maybe move up in the recruiting rankings with some strong camp performances.
  • Ohio State sent out a new offer over the weekend to high four-star cornerback Daryus Dixson. Another Mater Dei product, Dixson currently ranks as the No. 5 CB and No. 40 player overall in the 2025 class according to 247Sports. The 6-foot-1 DB already holds around 20 offers, with the Buckeyes joining a list that also includes Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, USC and others.
