Which Buckeyes are impressing a week into preseason practices?

Everybody knows that one of the best parts of being a sports fan is debating and dissecting the most (and least) important questions in the sporting world with your friends. So, we’re bringing that to the pages of LGHL with our favorite head-to-head column: You’re Nuts.

In You’re Nuts, two LGHL staff members will take differing sides of one question and argue their opinions passionately. Then, in the end, it’s up to you to determine who’s right and who’s nuts.

This week’s topic: Most encouraging news out of preseason camp thus far

Josh’s Take

Ryan Day’s Ohio State football team is just over a week into their fall camp, and vibes are positive, hopes are high, and optimism is in the air... Ok, I guess those are all similar, ya got me. There are also plenty of storylines coming out of these preseason practices, both good and umm, less good. Nothing concerning, nothing to be fearful of as a Buckeye fan. Just a few things to be aware of and/or keep an eye on.

But if you know anything about Gene and myself, you know that we are Team Optimism. No negative vibes over here. So for today’s installment of You’re Nuts, he and I decided to share our most encouraging or most exciting news coming out of The Woody thus far (during fall camp).

Normally – for the past few years at least – I would latch onto anything positive said about Kyle McCord and/or Julian Fleming and absolutely run with that. Same goes for Josh Proctor on the defensive side of the ball, as he completes the holy triumvirate of Ohio State players that I am still holding out hope for.

However, McCord is locked in a position battle with Devin Brown (as of Monday morning), Fleming is like ninth of the ‘WR hype list’ right now, and Proctor, back for his 12th season, appears to be destined for a rotational role at best. But that’s ok, Gene! The fact that these three guys are healthy and contributing is great, and we’re staying positive, baby.

So I guess I will just stick with the overall health situation as my most encouraging news. Right now, OSU has a fairly clean bill of health. Day has said as much, and I believe that Omari Abor and Kourt Williams are the only Buckeye dealing with a long-term injuries. Which is an absolute bummer for both players, but unfortunately, injuries are a part of the game. The fact that not many have occurred recently in Columbus (knock on wood) is a good thing.

(Williams’ injury was announced just before this was published, so excuse the limited mentioned above).

Also good – nay, great – is the seemingly healthy return of players like TreVeyon Henderson, Evan Pryor, and Mitchell Melton. These guys all finished the 2022 season with some sort of serious ailment but are now ready for action. The same could also be said for Tommy Eichenberg, Miyan Williams, and/or Cade Stover, although this trio did participate in the season-ending Peach Bowl. But Eichenberg did so with two broken hands, and the others were unable to finish the game against Georgia due to injury.

This lengthy and important list of players does not even include the likes of Emeka Egbuka, Fleming, and whoever else missed Ohio State’s spring game. I am sure I’m forgetting a name or two.

Look, OSU is never going to make it through a season or potentially even a week or a month unscathed. We saw it last year when the Buckeyes lost arguably their best player in Week freaking 1. It happens. But to enter the season mostly healthy is pretty much all you (the team, the fans, whoever) can ask for. And right now, Day’s squad is on a trajectory to do so.

While it is still early in the process, Buckeye Nation loves to hear that guys were not dinged up coming in. Or worse, dropping like flies on the first or second day or camp. We have seen this in the NFL, as players are suffering soft tissue injuries left and right... Which reminds me, everyone please make sure we’re sending well wishes to Joe Burrow. If you don’t, you’re on my list.

A healthy team is a dangerous team, even more so when it is Ohio State. The fact that most Buckeyes are currently healthy is certainly encouraging, and here’s hoping the Scarlet and Gray maintain those positives vibes in the lead-up to Sept. 2.

Gene’s Take

Like Josh, I am very excited about the current health status of the Buckeyes. Now, even though we are Team Positivity over here, do I trust the ancient strength and conditioning practices of Mick Marrotti to keep guys healthy? No, absolutely not. He will continue to train guys to be body builders rather than football players and Ohio State will likely see another crop of soft tissue injuries pop up this season as a result, but I digress...

On an actual positive note, I am especially excited to see players like Mitchell Melton and the running backs back at full strength.

Melton, a former four-star prospect at linebacker who will likely rotate in at the Jack role this season, has been raved about time and time again in each of the last several offseasons, but has seen both his 2021 and 2022 campaigns wiped out because of injuries. We of course also know how beat up Ohio State’s running backs were last season, especially Pryor who missed the entire year, but having him back in the mix alongside a healthy Henderson will be huge for the Buckeyes.

However, for me, the most encouraging news out of preseason camp thus far has been the play of the transfers Ryan Day and his staff added this offseason. Ohio State officially added nine transfers ahead of the 2023 season, and three of them — Ja’Had Carter, Davison Igbinosun, Josh Simmons — are in competitions for starting jobs, and the trio have reportedly looked pretty good.

Simmons is perhaps in the most important position battle of the three, as the Buckeyes’ offensive line needs to replace both starting tackles. Josh Fryar is expected to step up at one of the spots after gaining some experience last year, but the other starter is fully up for grabs. A four-star transfer prospect, Simmons was brought in with the expectation that he would bookend the O-line as the other starting tackle across from Fryar, and it sounds like things are going according to plan thus far.

“I think he’s had some really good practices and he has shown he can be the starting left tackle. He hasn’t won that job yet but he’s shown us he can do that.” Day said during his press conference on Monday.

Carter and Igbinosun, even if they are not starters — which I expect they will be — will both be supremely important pieces of an Ohio State secondary that needed to bring in some fresh talent. Carter has a very good shot at being one of the Buckeyes’ three starting safeties alongside Sonny Styles and Lathan Ransom, while Igbinosun is battling Jordan Hancock to be the No. 2 guy across from Denzel Burke at corner. Both are portions where Ohio State likes to rotate guys, so both will be on the field a ton this fall either way.

Elsewhere among the incoming transfers, Victor Cutler will provide some depth along the interior of the offensive line, and Nigel Glover will be an interesting piece after coming over late in the wake of Northwestern’s Pat Fitzgerald issues. Lorenzo Styles will likely need to take this season to complete the transition from wide receiver to defensive back, while Tywone Malone is likely the most interesting name among this group as someone who can make an impact in 2023.

“We’ve seen, so far, flashes that he can do it,” Day said of Malone on Monday. “But at this point of preseason camp, it’s the consistency of doing it all the time.”

It will be great to see the fresh faces meshing with the familiar faces as Ohio State looks to find the best 11 possible on both sides of the ball. Regardless, the news coming out of the Woody at this early juncture seems to be largely positive.

On today’s episode of “Land-Grant Uncut,” we are bringing you unedited audio from Ohio State football coach Ryan Day’s Monday, Aug. 14 press conference. He opens his statement by announcing that tight-end Bennett Christian has been suspended for the entire 2023 season after testing positive for a banned substance. He will continue to practice with the team but will be ineligible to play. While the head coach did indicate that he would like to have a starting quarterback named this week, he is not yet ready to make that decision.

However, it does appear that Jimmy Simmons is close to being named the starter at left tackle with Josh Fryar on the right side. Day discusses that and more in the presser.

Iowa v Penn State

One play or big moment per day as we count down to the start of Ohio State’s 2023 football season.

As we count down to the start of the 2023 season, we will be looking back at one play or big moment in
Ohio State history over the past decade or so that corresponds to the remaining days left until Buckeyes take the field against Indiana on Sept. 2. There are 19 days remaining.

Play of the Day: Carlos Hyde’s 19-yard TD vs. Iowa (2013)

Probably the most famous run of Carlos Hyde’s illustrious Ohio State career, the Buckeye running back refused to be brought down en route to the end zone. He probably ran closer to 30-plus yards on this 19-yard touchdown, and it was not his only contribution to what would be a 34-24 victory for the home team. Hyde finished the contest with 24 carries for 149 yards and two scores, while Braxton Miller did typical Braxton Miller things with 222 yards passing and two TDs with an additional 102 yards on the ground. Ohio State trailed in this game 7-0, 10-3 and 17-10 before finally taking the lead in the fourth quarter.

Players to Wear the #19 (since 2010):

  • Taylor Graham (2010-11)
  • Eli Ratliff (2012)
  • Gareon Conley (2013-14)
  • Joe Ramstetter (2013-16)
  • Eric Glover-Williams (2015-16)
  • Elijaah Goins (2017)
  • Dallas Gant (2018-20)
  • Jagger LaRoe (2019-21)
  • Chad Ray (2022-present)
  • Chip Trayanum (2022-present)

2024 four-star receiver Jeremiah McClellan | Tom Loy, 247Sports

The rich get richer as the Buckeyes add another stud wide receiver to their 2024 class.

It’s getting to be a bit absurd at this point just how good Brian Hartline is at this whole recruiting thing, but Ohio State fans will certainly take it. Yet another huge win for the Buckeyes’ wide receivers coach/offensive coordinator, on Sunday OSU landed a big time commitment from the program’s top remaining target at the position.

That pledge came from four-star 2024 wide receiver Jeremiah McClellan.

BREAKING: Four-Star WR Jeremiah McClellan has Committed to Ohio State!

The 6’1 190 WR from Saint Louis, MO chose the Buckeyes over Oregon, LSU, & Georgia

“I’m going to be among the best of the best & am going to have to work to keep the name as WRU.” https://t.co/ZAOneOSaoB pic.twitter.com/9VhbWPgft1

A long time Ohio State lean, some had begun to think that the Missouri native was wavering in his interest of taking his talents to Columbus, especially as the in-state Tigers were strengthening their pursuit of the 6-foot-1 pass-catcher in recent months. That was clearly not the case, as McClellan announced his commitment to the Buckeyes this weekend over Mizzou in addition to big brands like Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Oregon — all of whom made his top 12 schools in April — and many others.

“I knew after my official visit that I was going to Ohio State,” McClellan told On3. “I was talking to Marvin Harrison Jr., I listened to Coach Hartline and I felt that culture one last time and I knew[...] Going into that visit, Ohio State was up there, but so was Missouri and Oregon. I liked all three schools a lot, but Ohio State is the one. I had that feeling.”

A Christian Brothers Academy product, the St. Louis wideout is currently listed as the No. 17 wide receiver and the No. 91 overall player by 247Sports’ rankings. McClellan has been lauded by many for his excellent ball skills in addition to his hand-eye coordination, making him adept at bringing down contested catches and winning those one-on-one battles in the air. With a sturdy frame and a track background as well, it’s no wonder why McClellan garnered over 40 offers during his recruiting process — and why Hartline wanted him in this class.

McClellan becomes the first player from Missouri to commit to Ohio State since Jakailin Johnson in 2021. However, he is the third player in recent memory to join the Buckeyes by way of Christian Brothers Academy, as both Kam Babb and Cam Brown attended the school before coming to Columbus. Of course, the most notable commit from the Show Me State to OSU is none other than Ezekiel Elliott.

McClellan is the third wide receiver in this 2024 class for Hartline and the Buckeyes, with five-stars Jeremiah Smith and Mylan Graham being the other two. Ohio State could wind up with four receivers this cycle when all is said and done if they are able to flip four-star Chance Robinson away from Miami, but either way Ryan Day has to be thrilled with all of the new weapons he will be getting to catch passes in his offense. The work Hartline has done to build a room with this much incredible talent cannot be overstated.

Overall, McClellan becomes the 21st commit for the Buckeyes in their still No. 2-ranked 2024 class. However, the addition gives Ohio State a slightly higher per-player average than No. 1 Georgia’s (93.60 compared to 93.49), and with five less commits OSU is just 18.47 total points behind the Bulldogs (312.70 to 294.23). It would be surprising at this point if UGA does not finish with the nation’s top class, but Ohio State is right there in the mix.

Quick Hits

  • On Saturday, four-star Texas running back Tory Blaylock cut down his list of nearly 40 offers down to a top-13, and Ohio State made the cut. The No. 16 RB and a top-160 player overall I the 2025 class, the Buckeyes were included among the likes of Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, Penn State, and others. His father, Derrick Blaylock, spent seven seasons in the NFL with the Chiefs and the Jets after playing his college ball at Stephen F. Austin.

  • In basically the only positive thing to happen to Ohio State’s special teams under position coach Parker Fleming, on Saturday the Buckeyes landed a commitment from one of the nation’s top long snappers, Morrow Evans. The No. 2 LS in the country will join Ohio State’s 2024 class as a preferred walk-on. He is former high school teammates with left guard Donovan Jackson.

The Buckeyes are slowly but surely filling out their 2024 recruiting class, adding a late rister in Ottawa-Glandorf’s Colin White.

Chris Holtmann and the Ohio State men’s basketball coaching staff are hot on the recruiting trail this summer, forging forward to complete their 2024 recruiting class as the season nears. With a glut of guards on the roster who could conceivably still be on the team for two to three more years, the Buckeyes turned to a local product to add depth to their forward corps.

Colin White, the No. 5 player in the state of Ohio in the 2024 class, officially announced his commitment to Ohio State on Sunday afternoon, becoming the second member of Holtmann’s 2024 class.

He becomes the second member of Ohio State’s 2024 class, next to John Mobley Jr. White is a 6-foot-6, three-star small forward from Ottawa-Glandorf High School in northwest Ohio. He is the No. 153 player in the class according to 247Sports Composite, the No. 33 small forward, and the No. 5 player in Ohio. 247Sports’ own rankings has him a bit higher, as the No. 115 player, No. 26 small forward, and the No. 4 player in Ohio. White chose the Buckeyes over Cincinnati, TCU, Butler, and Northwestern on Sunday.

As a junior at OGHS, he was named first-team All-Ohio (Division III) and was named the regional and district player of the year, as well as the conference player of the year in the Western Buckeye League. He averaged 21.1 points per game last season, helping lead his team to a state runner-up finish.

White has been on Ohio State’s radar for some time now, but the Buckeyes did not officially offer him until last month. The coaching staff has seen him play and gave White specific feedback on his game if they were to offer him, including his shooting and defense. He spoke to Adam Jardy of the Columbus Dispatch last month about this, saying:

“They’ve wanted to see a few different things from me and I feel like I showed that throughout the spring and the summer, some new facets to my game, and that’s really helped in our relationship,” White said of the Ohio State staff. “We’re always very transparent with each other, so that’s also very good.”

After the Ohio State offer last month, White outlined a timeline for a decision that painted a list of finalists in August, followed by a decision in October, before his senior season began. This timeline was moved up quite a bit, and it’s not a coincidence that Ohio State’s offer and involvement with White sped up the timeline. As an Ohio kid who worked hard to earn an offer from his home state school, the choice was quick and easy.

The only forwards that are projected to be on the Ohio State roster next season are Devin Royal and Kalen Etzler, with Jamison Battle departing. White will be in a position to earn playing time as a freshman alongside Royal in the fall of 2024.

With the addition of White, Ohio State now has the No. 3 recruiting class in the Big Ten for 2024, behind Rutgers and Purdue.
