On this episode of “Hangout in the Holy Land,” Josh and Chuck share their frustration(s) stemming from Sunday’s women’s basketball game in Iowa City. Admittedly, Ohio State did not do itself any favors against the Iowa Hawkeyes, but there were also several poor calls that went against OSU. As a result, what should have been one of the best CBB games of the season seemed more like an intentional celebration of Iowa’s Caitlin Clark.

On the men’s side, Jake Diebler and the Buckeyes just keep on winning. So much so that Diebler should now be considered the favorite for Ohio State’s permanent HC position... And has he really put the team in a position to make this year’s NCAA Tournament?

Last but certainly not least, with spring (football) practice kicking off in Columbus, the hosts draft OSU’s most interesting players to keep an eye on. You won’t want to miss this segment, as the boys have a few surprises in store.

Nate Roberts | 247Sports

Odds are good that a highly touted tight end could be the next to join Ohio State’s 2025.

Spring ball is here! Tuesday being the official start of spring practice, the Buckeyes are back on the field prepping for the 2024 campaign, which could be a special one. One of the more exciting off-seasons in Ohio State’s recent history, the staff has crushed it from a personnel standpoint.

Specifically speaking, the recruiting wins for the Buckeyes over the last several weeks have been off the charts, and it’s been from both realms of portal targets and high school prospects. While the goal of this spring is to develop and get better for the upcoming season, the priority of recruiting is still going to be just as present as it has been.

In this case, we look at the Buckeyes, not from a sense of the current roster, but who could be next in the 2025 class to pull the trigger on a commitment to one of the best classes in the country early on.

Who is next?

Off the bat, there are plenty of top national recruits the Buckeyes are in a great position to land on both sides of the ball, so regardless of who is next on the agenda, Ohio State will be landing an elite talent. Offensively, my prediction unless something changes is tight end target Nate Roberts.

The effort alone...

Far and away the player the staff has the highest on their board at the spot, Roberts and his relationship with the Buckeyes, and position coach specifically Keenan Bailey, is as strong as it gets. Putting the full-court press on him for months now, Bailey has done a phenomenal job at showing him he’s the guy they want in 2025. Odds are it’s the relationship aspect that sticks out the most these days when it comes to recruiting, and Ohio State clearly has that here.

With how many visits Bailey has made to see Roberts in Oklahoma, that alone would be enough evidence, but the 6-foot-4 tight end has also made the trek to Columbus as well, proving his own interest in all that Ohio State has to offer. Bailey and Roberts communicate constantly, and when you become that close to a position coach, it’s easy to see why the Buckeyes are so highly regarded in his top list of schools.

Upcoming visit plans

As Roberts gets closer to making the final call, it’s important to note that he will be back in Columbus for the annual spring game on April 13. While it’s not a guarantee by any means that he will leave committed, it feels in this instance like the perfect time for him to shut things down considering how his recruitment has trended.

Currently, the Buckeyes lead the way on every recruiting site out there and own every 247Sports Crystal Ball prediction in their favor. Sure, those aren’t the end-all-be-all factors but still give plenty of insight of how Roberts is thinking. Schools like Oklahoma and Oregon are in the mix, and recent offers from LSU show Ohio State still has to fight its tail off for this one, but as mentioned, Bailey just seems to have too good of a relationship here with Roberts.

For the above reasons, the prediction here is that Nate Roberts is the next commitment in the 2025 class on the offensive side of the ball. Maybe someone beats him to the punch, and if that’s the case, it does still remain that he will likely be a Buckeye when all is said and done.

To see what he brings to the table, here’s the latest look at his athleticism. Safe to say he can both block and receive.

NCAA Womens Basketball: Big Ten Conference Tournament Semifinals - Indiana vs Ohio State

Matt Krohn-USA TODAY Sports

The Buckeyes enter the tournament as the No. 1 seed, but two days of action happen before the Scarlet and Gray step onto the court.

In the final year before additional Big Ten expansion, the conference descends on Minneapolis, Minnesota for the second season in a row. Playing in front of an expected sellout crowd — the first in conference women’s tournament history — is Ohio State women’s basketball the favorite to win it all? The road to the final looks clear, but if the Scarlet and Gray make it all the way to Sunday, it could be a highly coveted rematch.

The 14-team tournament starts tonight, with the bottom four seeds tipping off starting at 6:30 p.m. ET on Peacock. Here’s how the entire tournament looks beyond Wednesday night:

Big Ten women’s basketball

The Buckeyes’ half of the conference bracket features no teams that’ve beaten Ohio State in the regular season. Head coach Kevin McGuff’s side takes on either the Illinois Fighting Illini or Maryland Terrapins in their first game of the postseason tournament.

During the conference season, the Buckeyes played both sides close on the road. On Jan. 17, in College Park, Maryland, Ohio State struggled offensively against head coach Brenda Frese’s Terrapins.

It took a strong fourth quarter of rebounding, led by All-B1G First Team forward Cotie McMahon. In the final 10 minutes, McMahon grabbed four offensive rebounds herself, against a Maryland side that looked gassed as the Buckeyes pulled away. McMahon also led the team with six points in the final quarter to pull away to an 84-76 victory.

Maryland enters Thursday’s game with a 5-3 record to end the season. However, those three losses all came against the top three schools in the Big Ten: Ohio State, the Iowa Hawkeyes, and Indiana Hoosiers. On Feb. 11, the Terrapins beat the Illini in Champaign, 69-53, and entered the game as favorites to move on.

A week after Coach McGuff’s escape from College Park, the Illini gave Ohio State another scare. In the second quarter of a 67-59 Buckeyes win, the Scarlet and Gray made program history with its lowest point-scoring total in a quarter. Those four points gave the Illini an 11-point lead heading into halftime.

As is the storyline for many games in the second half of the season, Ohio State pulled away in the second half. The Buckeyes outscored Illinois 45-26 in the final 20 minutes. Hurting the Buckeyes in that game was strong post-play by Illini forward Kendall Bostic. The 6-foot-2 Bostic grabbed 18 rebounds and scored 13 points. In all four games Bostic has played against Ohio State, she’s averaged a double-double with 16.3 rebounds and 15.8 points.

Friday’s Ohio State game starts at 12:30 p.m. ET on Big Ten Network. A win gives the Buckeyes a 2:00 p.m. ET tip against the winner of the other early Friday game, also on Big Ten Network.

Should the Buckeyes move on to Saturday, it’s likely against either the Michigan State Spartans or Nebraska Cornhuskers. Ohio State dominated two of the three games against the two sides, with a home game against the Spartans the closest of the group. That was a five-point win for the Buckeyes, entering the fourth quarter tied at 50 apiece. The Buckeyes adjusted, handily defeating the Spartans in East Lansing, followed by a 33-point victory over the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

None of that means Ohio State has an easy road to move into Sunday’s tournament finale, but it does benefit from earning the No. 1 seed with what’s on the other side of the bracket.

The only two teams the Buckeyes lost to in the regular season sit opposite Ohio State. Iowa and the Michigan Wolverines have to defeat some of the strongest teams in the Big Ten. For Michigan, a win Thursday earns them a game against the Hoosiers, who might be without the services of forward Mackenzie Holmes. The All-American left Sunday’s home regular-season finale with a left knee injury.

Tuesday, head coach Teri Moren provided an optimistic update, but nothing final has been shared regarding her availability for the tournament. With that said, Indiana still beat Maryland 71-54 even with the third-quarter exit.

A dark horse is the Penn State Nittany Lions. Although the State College side slipped towards the end of the season, following a six-game winning streak with a six-game losing streak, it ended strong.

Penn State won its final two games, albeit against two of the teams in the bottom four of the conference, but ended the season with a 90-34 win over the Minnesota Golden Gophers. If that Nittany Lions team enters the tournament, it’ll be difficult for the Wisconsin Badgers to advance. Then Penn State would have to face Iowa.

If seeding stays true, and there are no upsets before Saturday for Iowa and Indiana, it sets up a rematch between two of the top three teams in the Big Ten. While Ohio State and Iowa played two close games this season, guessing the result of Indiana and Iowa is a crapshoot.

Indiana lost to Iowa by 28 points in Carver-Hawkeyes Arena on Jan. 13. Then, the Hoosiers beat the Hawkeyes by 17 points in Assembly Hall at the end of February.

Should home-court advantage play a part, the crowd in Minnesota this weekend is likely Black and Gold leaning. Last year, Hawkeye fans traveled en masse to Minneapolis to cheer superstar guard Caitlin Clark and her Iowa teammates onto a Big Ten Tournament title.

Iowa’s shown its ability to bounce back and not lose to the same team two times in a row. Both Ohio State and the Kansas State Wildcats defeated the Hawkeyes, only to turn around and lose its second in-season contest against head coach Lisa Bluder’s side.

With the gap between the top three and the rest of the Big Ten, with fourth place having three more losses in conference play compared to third place, it means Saturday and Sunday could be a battle of who’s best of the best. Ohio State proved its best in conference play, but tournament time is different.

If Ohio State and Iowa play in the finale, it’ll provide a best-of-three competition with the two sides splitting the season series. The winner gets the Big Ten Tournament trophy. A tournament title for the Buckeyes would be McGuff’s second regular season and tournament win in the same year, joining the 2017-18 season when guard Kelsey Mitchell led the Scarlet and Gray to the dual titles.

Iowa has a history of its own, winning the tournament two seasons in a row. Last year, Clark and Iowa won it spectacularly with a blowout 105-72 defeat of Ohio State. This season, the stakes are higher and so is the stage. Whoever makes the final will play on national television, with Sunday’s championship final starting at 12 noon ET on CBS.

Ok, not every major recruit, but it sure felt like it.

Yesterday was a big day for Ohio State football fans. Not only was it the start of spring practice following one of the most exciting two-month, offseason periods in program history, but the floodgates seemingly opened on Tuesday in terms of expert predictions from the recruiting front. While some of the developments are new, others are improvements in OSU’s odds of landing the talented players, but nonetheless, it was a bit of a deluge when it came to recruiting news.

So, we will run through all of the prognostications for you here.

Jaime Ffrench | Wide Receiver | No. 16 Nationally

On Monday, Ohio State Insider Matt Parker put an official prediction into On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine based on “intel” that the former Alabama commit would become a Buckeye. Ffrench (no, that is not a typo) is the No. 16 player in the country according to 247Sports Composite Ratings and is the No. 3 wide receiver nationally.

The 6-foot-1, 185-pound pass catcher from Jacksonville originally pledged to play for the Crimson Tide in July of 2023, but following the retirement announcement of ‘Bama head coach Nick Saban, he opened up his recruitment again and Brian Hartline and the Buckeyes have been at the top of the list in terms of pursuit.

On3’s prediction machine needs a bit of a kick, because it is still factoring in predictions from before his Alabama commitment last summer, so the numbers are obviously off, but the Buckeyes appear to be battling Florida State for the receiver. Obviously, the Seminoles are one of Ffrench’s in-state teams, so nothing is decided yet, but it does appear to be moving in the right direction for OSU.

Justin Hill | Edge Rusher | No. 120 Nationally

On the other side of the ball, on Tuesday, Larry Johnson and the Buckeyes picked up a prediction for a high-value in-state edge rusher who has long been a priority. Yesterday, On3’s director of recruiting Chad Simmons logged an official prediction — also based on intel — for the Buckeyes to land Winton Woods defensive end Justin Hill.

This prediction moves Ohio State to a 94.4% chance to land Hill according to the RPM, thanks to previous predictions from OSU insiders. But, given Simmons’ status in the recruiting world, his insight certainly makes things a bit more real.

Hill is the No. 120 player in the 2025 recruiting class and No. 12 edge rusher, according to 247Sports composite Ratings. The 6-foot-3, 220-pounder is currently a junior at Winton Woods High School in Cincinnati and has held an Ohio State offer since last March. The Buckeyes already have commitments from two of the top-six players in the state — quarterback Tavien St. Clair and offensive tackle Carter Lowe — and at least one more will pop up a bit later in this list, so getting Hill officially in the fold would certainly help Ryan Day and company keep the fence up around the state.

Mariyon Dye | Edge Rusher | No. 189 Nationally

Hill is not the only defensive lineman trending toward Columbus, as yesterday On3’s Matt Parker and Alex Gleitman both logged predictions for Johnson to land Elkhart, Indiana native Mariyon Dye. The No. 189 player in the 2025 cycle and No. 19 defensive end, Parker and Gleitman put in their predictions based on intel picked up on Tuesday.

This officially moves the Buckeyes to a 95.3% chance to land Dye according to the RPM. The 6-foot-5, 235-pound edge rusher visited Columbus for the January Junior Day where he picked up his Buckeye offer, and he has an official visit planned for June. He has other visits on the books for the summer as well — including one to Tennessee the week following his trip to Columbus — so this is far from finished, but it definitely looks like OSU is in the driver’s seat at the moment.

London Merritt | Edge Rusher | No. 110 Nationally

Believe it or not, we’ve got news on yet another defensive end prediction in the Buckeyes’ favor. This recruiting cycle will need to see a ton of d-lineman coming to Columbus with all four starters likely to be heading to the NFL following the 2024 season, so it looks like Larry Johnson is putting in the work to get guys wrapped up sooner rather than latter.

On Tuesday, Gleitman logged another intel-based prediction, and that one was for IMG Academy edge rusher London Merritt to become a Buckeye. This follows up the crystal ball prediction from 247Sports’ Steve Wiltfong in February for OSU to land the 6-foot-2, 250-pounder. The prediction moves Ohio State to an 87.9% chance to pick up the Atlanta native now playing at the IMG sports factory in Florida.

Merritt will be joining Dye in Columbus on June 14, which is shaping up to be a major summer recruiting day for the Buckeyes.

Trey McNutt | Safety (Athlete) | No. 29 Nationally

Don’t look now, but yesterday was a busy one for Gleitman who must have been hearing a ton of chatter around the Woody Hayes Athletic Center on the first day of spring ball because he also logged a prediction that Ohio State would land Shaker Heights native, and Buckeye legacy, Trey McNutt.

Classified as either a safety or athlete depending on which service you look at, Trey is the son of former Ohio State cornerback Richard McNutt. The younger McNutt is the No. 29 player in the country according to the 247Sports Composite Ratings, the No. 2 safety nationally, and the top player in the state of Ohio. On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine now gives the Buckeyes 80.9% odds to land McNutt.

While he doesn’t have any 247 crystal balls yet, if we suppose the On3 predictions is accurate and McNutt becomes a Buckeye, when combined with a crystal ball from Bucknuts’ Bill Kurelic for OSU to land running back Bo Jackson (no, not that Bo Jackson), Ohio State would lock down the top-four high school players from the state of Ohio in the 2025 recruiting cycle with Hill at No. 6.

The Buckeyes are also in on Cleveland Heights running back Marquise Davis, who is planning an official visit to Columbus on June 7.
